Summoner Spells Back to Top

12.png 4.png I would recommend these 99% of the time for the team fights and making plays around the map. It is also a fallback in case you are getting pushed into tower. You can get back to your tower quicker to not miss a lot of creeps.

14.png4.png Purely for aggressive play or if you know what you're doing. Wouldn't recommend it as much, but it may be more favorable if you're hoping to be more dominant in trades or you plan on not split-pushing as much.

14.png12.pngThe best of both worlds. Though, I find flash more favorable especially if you make stupid decisions like me sometimes xD.

Masteries Back to Top

6-6-18 are the masteries I use for Leona. Alternatively, you could put all 12 points in the Ferocity tree to get Oppressor which deals more damage to CC'd(Crowd Controlled) targets. In this case, it works well with your Q, the stun.

0-12-18 is also a fine choice picking up Dangerous Game if you think fights are gonna be close. Merciless can be another good choice dealing 5% increased damage to targets below 40% health. Meditation is not a bad choice since you might be finding yourself spamming skills to survive early game and laning phase.

I max W first since you'll be building armor and tank items pretty much most of the game. It scales off of armor and magic resist so you'll only be getting stronger and more tanky.

Grabbing W and maxing it in lane, I find, to be very useful in lane. You can shrug off pretty much 30% of the damage dealt to you when you are getting engaged on, ganked, trading, and so forth.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

    A more sustained start.
A typical start to any top lane matchup. Solid against champs that auto attack quite often. The 80 health is nice also.
You have confidence to be starting these. Why not?

Core Items

I almost always rush this first. It provides decent armor as well as AOE damage. Good for split pushing and doing extra damage in trades.
I usually go for Mercury treads because you already aren't mobile so CC will be a an annoyance. Ninja Tabi if they have a lot of AD or not much CC on their team. Mobility if you plan on roaming a lot. Swiftness if you like the consistent speed it provides. Lucidity boots for even more CDR and if you want your teleport up often.
For those annoying attack speed oriented champs or if there are a lot of AD. Frozen Heart is great if they have more than one attack speed based champ such as Vayne bot and then a Jax top. Randuin's is a good choice if they have some crit as well.
A sheen item is really good on Leona as it does a ton of damage with her Q. I recommend getting one of the two if you can. Trinity Force is an item that can be rushed first if you are really dominating lane and you are confident in your abilities. Iceborn if you find more CC to be the best in your favor with the slow, or if you can't afford to get Triforce or simply want the armor and mana,
Great for chasing. The slow from this item is sure to keep an enemy within your reach at all times. Not to mention the 60 armor and health that it provides. Very good item.
This items only gives you even more CC than you already have. The active on this item must be used otherwise you're just wasting gold on this item. It has very good synergy when paired with the Triforce. These two together are perfect for 1v1's
Another very good item. This is an item to be paired with the Sunfire Cape/Bami's Cinder as it steals your target's magic resist making the Immolate passive do even more damage. This is also an item to get if you plan on split pushing a lot.
For skill shot heavy/centric enemy team compositions or for uninterrupted engages made by you. A good item in those situations.

Situational Items

Perhaps you would like to be fairly tanky and have a big mana pool. Of if you're planning on doing a more hybrid build, this item can work pretty well. Nice health and mana stats. Although, if you do plan on getting this consider rushing first as it takes 10 minutes to stack it up.
Haven't tested this item out all to much, but a lot of auto attacking champs are getting this and it's really good, even after the slight nerf to the AOE size on it. Try it out!
No escaping from you. Let's you stick to enemies like glue. great amount of health this item provides, although, I wouldn't recommend getting this item unless you are ahead as their are such better options.
Against any high burst champions such as Veigar. The Life Line passive is also pretty good too.
Haven't tested this item out all too much, but as it shows it provides even more defense against those high burst champions, converting 12% of the damage to a bleed effect instead.
Ravenous Hydra is a great item as well, as it aids in wave clearing and is a good substitute for a Trinity force if you don't plan on getting one. It does some nice damage and again, make sure you use the ACTIVE ON IT. Titanic Hydra is an also tanker counterpart that can be very good if you want more beefiness
If you plan on going more of a bruiser build this item is perfect especially if the enemy is stacking a bit or armor.

The example builds I've made are purely SITUATIONAL. Don't just take those builds for granted if you are put into any of those situation such as the enemy team having a lot of AP Damage. The builds may vary and change accordingly to better adapt to the game.

VS

Aatrox

Hard

He can be quite challenging just because of how much sustain he has, DPS, and not to mention you have to kill him twice. Just try to farm up against him and dodge his skill shots while waiting for banks.

VS

Darius

Hard

Trading with this guy can be a pain in the butt. It was tough to wether or not put this as a medium or hard matchup, but because of the sustain he has with the heal on his Q, I categorized him as hard,

VS

Dr. Mundo

Medium

Trading with him can be slightly challenging because of the masochism.png steroid he gets that chunks quite a bit. His ult sadism.png is also annoying as it gives him sustain in lane and if you don't have enough damage, it would be a waste trading with him while his ult is up.

VS

Fiora

Medium

She's currently one of the best top laners at 1v1's though, you shouldn't let that scare you as much. When she goes in on you, pop your W for the armor and then auto attack stun her and then back off. Careful for her parry though as she can negate some of your skills.

VS

Gangplank

Medium

He can be annoying too especially his barrels do a ton of damage, even after a nerf on those. Try to stay away from his barrels when trading with him as best as you can and you shouldn't have a problem.

VS

Garen

Easy

Garen is a fairly easy match to go against. Aside from his long silence on you it, shouldn't be hard to trade with him a little. One stun and no more spin to win. Just be cautious about trading with him when you're low even if you know you can win. One executing ult and it's over. His silence could stop you from casting your let in those dire situations.

VS

Gnar

Medium

A medium matchup simply because he has range over you in lane. However trading with his not hard. Respect his Mega Gnar for though.

VS

Irelia

Medium

Aril seems to always come back in the game despite losing lane or getting set behind just a little. Her 1v1 is always amazing so be careful on trading with her. Stun n' Run

End Notes Back to Top

I hope you all found my guide to be some what helpful should you choose to play Leona top. I will be updating in the near future on how to play her during landing phase and mid to late game as I do some more Leona top research myself against new match-ups. Speaking of match-ups, those will also be updates as I gather more data going against difference different champs. Please feel free to leave a comment, or let me know if there is anything I should correct or change. Thank you!
