Summoner Spells Back to Top

4.png  Just happens to be the best Summoner Spell currently availiable it is a must have!.

3.png In my opinion the best Summoner Spell to go with as Support it offers additional protection for your marksman and defuses any enemy hypercarry for 2.5 seconds.

14.png Is the second choice here if you think you can quite easily take down your opponents during laning phase take it with you otherwise stick with 3.png

                                                              Resolve Mastery Tree

                                                               images.jpg VS Unyielding_mastery_s4.png

Well using 5 whole points just to get 2 Health Regneration seems rather weak to me so I'll rather go with Unyielding and get +5% Amor & MR.

Wanderer_mastery_s4.png Vs Block_mastery_s4.png

I rather take Tough Skin for a little more lane sustain instead of additional Roaming speed this one is based on your own preference if you rather stay on lane or roam alot.

Adaptive_Armor_mastery_s4.png Vs Veteran's_Scars_mastery_s4.png

I take Veteran's Scars over Runic Armor because i simply prefer having a higher health pool than having additional healing on a champion that already has good self sustain.

Summoner's_Insight_mastery_s4.png Vs Perseverance_mastery_s4.png

Having 15% CD Reduction off 4.png just beats +50%/200% Health Regeneration when below 20%  Health  by a long shot in my opinion.

Swiftness_mastery_s4.png Vs Legendary_Guardian_mastery_s4.png

I consider having 15% Tenacity and Slow Resist more valuable then flat 15 Armor & 15 MR

Grasp_of_the_Undying_mastery_2016.png Vs Strength_of_the_Ages_mastery_2016.png Vs Bond_of_Stone_mastery_2016.png

Grasp of the Undying seems rather unfitting in my opinion you're not meant to deal damage but to bring utility into fights.

Strenght of the Ages does look good but the fact that it needs stacking first and at best gives you 300 Health which would be a value of 800 Gold basicly 1028.png two of those is just Meh.

Cunning Mastery Tree

Fleet_of_Foot_mastery_s4.png Vs Butcher_mastery_s4.png

Should be fairly easy you're not supposed to farm so Savagery is basicly useless while Wanderer helps you roam around and get back to lane.

Runic_Affinity_mastery_s3.png Vs Culinary_Master_mastery_s4.png Vs ayy.png

Well, you're not likely to get any buff so Secret Stash is the only viable option here.
Should be clear that Assassin is really not for supports as it increases your damage by 1.5% stick with Cookies.

Executioner_mastery_s4.png Vs Strength_of_Spirit_mastery_s4.png

Obviously you're not supposed to add damage but utility to your team and those 1,5% of missing mana regeneration help out a lot now that mana potions are a goner.

Pickpocket_mastery_s3.png Vs Dangerous_Game_mastery_2016.png

As you're not supposed to take CS of your Team and really need all the gold you can get you're most likely going for Bandit to get that extra 1 Gold per minion that has died along with 3301.png it can stack a nice amount of gold in a reasonable time.

Passive - Sunlight

The most important thing to remember about Leona's abilities is that every one of them paints targets, regardless whether they are monsters or players. If an ally strikes your passive, it bursts and deals extra damage. This makes Leona an ideal match with any bursty ADC, but we'll get into that later. One thing to note is that you can get your ADC easier farm by using your E (Zenith Blade) on the minion wave or neutral monsters to paint them with the passive and grant them some extra damage, making for some faster wave clears.

Q - Shield of Daybreak

I start the game with my Q (Shield of Daybreak) stun to allow my ADC to make an early play on the enemy carry or Support. You just need to make sure to wait for the right opportunity to use it. Be careful at the start, as you are quite squishy in the early game. A special feature of Shield of Daybreak is an autoattack reset, this allows you to destroy wards if they are placed right on top of you with an autoattack, Q, autoattack combo. You need to have good timing though! Another thing to keep in mind though is that Q works on towers (dealing additional damage), you can combo it with your autoattacks to push turrets slightly faster.

W - Eclipse

The skill I max first is of course the W (Eclipse). This shield is the thing that makes Leona tanky. It grants a massive armor and magic resist boost for 3 seconds before exploding, painting all targets in the vicinity with Leona's passive and dealing some magic damage. Use this at critical moments to soak tons of damage and to catch any people with low health in the middle of a crowd. Make sure to activate this after an E-Q combo to soak any damage retaliation and to splash the enemy with further damage via your passive. Note that Eclipse grants you an extra three seconds of protection after exploding as long as you hit an enemy, this can be seen visually in Leona's yellow aura after it detonates. Try and time your engages and disengages around this shield. Start disengaging just as your shield begins to run out, then re-initiate once it comes back up. This method allows you to take the least damage possible.

E - Zenith Blade

I grab my E to solidify my E-Q combo at level 2.  I can use this to help burst the carry or support to try and drive them out of lane or keep the enemy carry from farming. It is useful to note that this E will travel through minions and walls and root the enemy to the location until you are pulled to them, but you don't actually have to hit the E to zone them or force them into a different position. This can be useful in preventing the enemy carry from farming or for pushing them out of position into a gank.

R / Ultimate - Solar Flare

Finally we have Leona's R/Ult(Solar Flare). Solar Flare is an AOE attack that stuns anyone in it's center and slows anyone outside the center for 1.5 seconds. This is very useful ability for teamfights, as it can provide a wide-slow to most people in the teamfight and paint them with your passive. It's best to combo this with your E-Q as well (E-Q-R) as it can keep an enemy in a single position long enough for your carry or one of your teammates to kill them without fear of retaliation. You also shouldn't be afraid of wasting it, as it does have a very quick CD (especially with the right items), so if there's even a chance of your teammate dying or the enemy escaping a chase, it's worth it to drop your R, especially considering this only costs 100 mana. If an enemy is beyond your range, it may also be wise to initiate with your R into an E-Q combo. The same applies if there's a minion wave stacked on a turret and you need a quick way to clear, comboing R and W can clear a wave rather quickly.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

THIS IS THE BEST START. EARLY INCOME, EARLY VISION. THE EARLY YELLOW WILL HELP YOU WITH EARLY BRUSH CONTROL AND WARDING.

Core Items

THE SIGHTSTONE IS A CRITICAL ITEM FOR ANY SUPPORT. IT GIVES FREE WARDS TO PLACE ANYWHERE YOU WANT AND MAKES YOU SLIGHTLY MORE TANKY. ONLY UPGRADE TO RUBY SIGHTSTONE IF YOU HAVE SOME EXTRA GOLD, IT'S NOT AS GOLD EFFICIENT AS MANY OTHER BUYS.
GET THIS ON YOUR FIRST BACK IF YOU DIDN'T START WITH IT. YOU NEED IT TO SUPPLEMENT YOUR INCOME.
PICK THESE UP AT YOUR LEISURE. ONCE YOU GET FACE OF THE MOUNTAIN MAKE SURE TO SHIELD YOUR CARRIES IN A BAD SITUATION. THESE SCALE BETTER INTO LATE-GAME THEN THE ALTERNATIVE TALISMAN BUILD (IN TERMS OF RAW STATS, NOT THE ACTIVE), ESPECIALLY SEEING AS LEONA IS A TANK.
PICK THIS UP AS SOON AS YOU FINISH SIGHTSTONE, AS YELLOW TRINKET BECOMES USELESS TO YOU AT THAT POINT.
KEEP A PINK WARD UP SOMEWHERE AT ALL TIMES YOU CAN AFFORD IT. I FIND THE BEST PLACES TO BE IN BRUSH NEAR MAJOR OBJECTIVES LIKE BARON OR DRAGON, BUT GETTING A DEEP PINK IN THEIR JUNGLE CAN BE VERY EFFICIENT AND MAKES SPOTTING ENEMY ROTATIONS EASY
NEVER BUY THIS ITEM, IT HAS NO ACTIVE, LOW GOLD EFFICIENCY, AND SLOT EFFICIENCY IS IRRELEVANT IN A META WHERE THE GAMES END SO QUICKLY. YOU WILL MOST LIKELY NEVER REACH 6 ITEMS ON SUPPORT ANYWAYS.
MOBILITY BOOTS ARE ALL BUT CORE ON SUPPORT. THEY HELP WITH WARDING, GAP CLOSING BEFORE TEAMFIGHTS, AND GENERAL MAP PRESENCE. LEONA IS ONE OF THE BETTER ROAMING SUPPORTS TOO, SO BENEFITS EXTREMELY WELL FROM THIS ITEM. DISTORTION AND CAPTAIN ENCHANTMENTS CAN BOTH SERVE THEIR PURPOSE. PICK DEPENDING ON THE SITUATION.
ONE OF THESE ITEMS SHOULD BE COMPLETED BY THE END OF THE GAME ALMOST EVERY TIME. IF YOU NEED MR, LOCKET IS THE BEST OPTION. IF YOU WANT TO USE A WAVE MANIPULATION STRATEGY TO WIN LATE INTO THE GAME, BANNER IS A GREAT OPTION.
THESE ARE GOOD IF YOU WANT EXTRA MOBILITY IN TEAMFIGHTS. BUY THEM IF ROAMING ISN'T YOUR TOP PRIORITY.
THIS ITEM IS BASICALLY CORE ON LEONA IN MY OPINION. IT FUSES SO INCREDIBLY WELL WITH HER KIT, THAT IT WOULD BE ALMOST FOOLISH TO NOT PICK THIS UP AT SOME POINT IN THE GAME. LEONA IS AN ENGAGE CHAMPION AND THIS ITEM MAKES HER BETTER AT DOING IT.

Situational Items

I'D ONLY BUILD THIS IF AN ENEMY ADC GETS FED
GREAT EARLY ARMOR ITEM IF YOU WANT TO ROAM MORE. YOU LOSE A BIT OF THE UTILITY OF RANDUIN'S/GLORY/HEART, BUT GAIN A LOT OF MOBILITY IN RETURN. PICK IT UP IF YOU LIKE ROAMING A LOT AS A SUPPORT AND AREN'T TOO FAR BEHIND. IT'S BETTER AS A "SELFISH" ITEM THAN SUNFIRE CAPE COULD EVER HOPE TO BE.
THIS IS ANOTHER DO NOT BUILD THIS. IT'S AN ENORMOUSLY SELFISH ITEM THAT, UNLIKE DEADMAN'S PLATE, DOES NOTHING TO HELP YOUR TEAM. IT ALSO FALLS OFF PRETTY QUICKLY AFTER THE MID-GAME AND HAS THE POTENTIAL TO STEAL KILLS FROM YOUR CARRIES. WORTHLESS ITEM IN ALL BUT VERY SPECIFIC SITUATIONS.
IF YOU'RE GETTING STOPPED FROM ENGAGING BY A LOT OF CROWD CONTROL, YOU CAN BUILD THIS, BUT ONLY IF YOU'VE ALREADY FINISHED LOCKET AND YOU STILL NEED ADDITIONAL MAGIC RESIST.
IF YOU WANT TO PLAY A WAVE MANIPULATION STRATEGY, THIS ISN'T TOO BAD. I STILL WOULDN'T RECOMMEND IT HOWEVER.
BUILD RANDUIN'S IF YOU NEED TO STICK TO FLEEING ENEMIES, BUILD FROZEN HEART IF THERE ARE A LOT OF AUTOATTACK DEPENDENT CHAMPIONS ON THE OTHER TEAM.

STARTING BUYS

3302.png2003.pngX33340.png

FIRST PRIORITY

2049.png3341.png

Buy this on your first back to secure your lane from ganks by the enemy jungler and keep your lane brushes warded in order to fight back against the enemy lane. This is a crucial buy for a support in order to create early vision for their team. Sweeper should be bought the second you finish your Sightstone, as you will no longer have any need for the yellow trinket.

3117.png

You can also buy this on your first back if you are crushing your lane or if you are for any reason unafraid of early pressure from the enemy jungler. It will get you back to lane faster and open up opportunities to roam if your lane is too pushed in to play aggressively. Ganking mid or invading with your jungler is a fantastic strategy on Leona, and she is in fact one of the best champions for this purpose.

3401.png3097.png

Here is a bit of a choice as far as build path is concerned. Finishing Face of the Mountain after you have Targon's isn't too expensive and gives you easy access to a good amount of health for stats. Face of the Mountain also has a fairly useful active to use in situations where your carries are in inordinate amounts of danger. It's a small shield, but even a small shield can be useful at the right time. I would suggest to most Leona players that you finish Face of the Mountain, but if you choose that you want to dedicate more gold to other important items (especially if your behind) it is a viable option to finish Targon's for the income and then just ignore Face of the Mountain until later, instead using that gold to fuel you further down your build path. In most situations I wouldn't recommend it, but it can accelerate you a bit onto your better items. I feel that both paths are equally viable ways to progress.

3800.png

An incredibly useful item, I adore Righteous Glory. It works amazingly well with Leona's kit because it offers even more engagement tools. It is the perfect item to keep a snowball rolling. If you are ever incredibly ahead, building Glory immediately after finishing other important items in your build will help you seal the game very quickly. Be careful though, building this from behind can be useful for making picks, but engaging teamfights from behind can be an incredibly bad idea that will only serve to keep the enemy's snowball rolling. Righteous Glory is kind of situational, because it should be placed at different points of your build in accordance of the situation. If you are ahead, build it early. If you are behind, finish your other items first and finish it later (it can help you get back into a losing game). In terms of active efficiency, Righteous Glory probably has the best active in the game, in addition to a decent amount of raw tank stats.

3364.png

UPGRADE YOUR SWEEPER THE SECOND YOU BASE AT LEVEL 9 OR LATER!

ONCE THOSE ARE DONE, WE GO INTO SITUATIONAL PICKUPS...

Once these items are finished, you'll need to examine the state of the game. Who is strongest on the enemy team? Who provides the most consistent threat to you or your closest teammates? How much of the enemy team are big damage dealers? What type of damage do they bring to the table on an individual level? Is there more of a certain type of damage on the enemy team than another, even if that another type of damage is coming from an extremely fed enemy carry? Let's help you sort out these questions.

The highest priority is to itemize against the most fed enemy carry, but that doesn't mean you can ignore the rest of their team. You have to be aware of the way the game is flowing. If the enemy top lane carry gets fed but you aren't likely to be getting into any teamfights soon, there's no reason to itemize specifically against them. The same applies if the enemy team is running more than a single threat. You have to try and strike a balance between itemizing against the strongest members of the enemy team and against the members of the enemy team you are most likely to run into. You will gain a stronger awareness for that the more you play the game. Experience is very valuable.

3742.png3143.png

I suggest to newer Leona players that they start with an armor item regardless of the situation. For more experienced Leona players, mostly with the greatest amount of game sense, you will know the best time to get the armor item. It is usually as your fourth item (after Sightstone, Face of the Mountain, and Boots of Mobility) in order to start preparing for teamfights. If you are under more magic damage threat, you'll of course want MR, but we'll get into that soon. The best armor options for Leona are Deadman's Plate, Randuin's Omen, and Frozen Heart.

Deadman's Plate is the most selfish of these options. The slow and the extra mobility are both incredibly useful for roaming and ganking the other lanes. This is a fantastic option if your other lanes are winning or even, but not so much if they are losing and you aren't able to "seal the deal" so to speak when you gank their lane. This item is not providing efficiency if you are ganking, getting kills, and securing deep vision control. If you buy mobility, especially at the cost of raw tank stats, you need to use it. You also need to be extremely careful about leaving your ADC in bottom lane with no protection, especially in solo queue where ADC's won't be paying attention to the fact that you're roaming and get themselves into dangerously optimistic 2v1's where they are very likely to die.

Randuin's Omen is the most versatile in that it is a good buy in practically every situation. It's a balanced item between the two extremes of being selfish and selfless. It provides a good deal of raw tank stats (Armor, Health), a good passive against enemy AD champions (lower crit damage, reduces attackers attack speed), and a great active once you are in the midst of the fight (AOE slow). If you are ever unsure of what to buy for armor, just go for Randuin's. It's useful for both you and your teammates, especially if you are using the active to slow teams that are on the run.

3110.png3075.png

Frozen Heart and Thornmail are the most selfless of these options. These are items that gives you absolutely no health, but either reflect damage or have an aura that is very effective against enemy champions that rely on attack speed. Before you ever resort to buying a Thornmail, Frozen Heart should be your first option. It gives a huge amount of armor and cooldown reduction while also giving you a greater amount of mana. So it costs you health, but it gives you more opportunities to engage and stay in the midst of teamfights (in fact, you are encouraged to do so in order to get the best effect from the aura, which reduces attack speed of enemy champions in the area around you). Frozen Heart is incredibly situational. I wouldn't buy it if only a single enemy AD champion is strong (Thornmail is the better pickup in that case, but probably not this early) and like Thornmail it tends to be a stronger item when stacked with another item that gives you a strong boost of health (so I would combine it with one of the other two armor items or an Armor item if you get late enough into the game). I rarely build this, and usually it's only against team compositions that rely heavily on attack speed. Never let it fall out of mind though and don't be afraid to build it later into the game, it is useful while picked up for the right situations. The same applies to Thornmail, but it is even rarer that I build that because it is even more tailored to the specific situation of combating extremely fed enemy AD champions.

3190.png

If you are against a lot of magic damage and need to protect yourself with MR, Locket of the Iron Solari is without a doubt the best option in all situations. It gives an magic resist aura to your team and a shield for use in desperate situation. No other MR item compares in terms of both helping you and your team (it even gives a great boost of health). Usually I build it as my fifth item after Randuin's/Deadman's, but if I know I need some early magic resist I will instead pick it up as my fourth item and delay the armor.

3050.png

Zeke's Harbinger is also a great fourth item if you are ahead or even in lane (in lieu of Randuin's/Deadman's). If you want to sacrifice some raw tank stats to give your carry some more power, I'd jump on the opportunity. Obviously, you don't want to build it with caster ADs (like Ezreal) unless you are far ahead, but Zeke's Harbinger is probably my most common fourth item pickup at the moment. It's very useful in games that snowball as quickly as they do in the current meta. Just be very present of mind. It's very useful in a lot of situations, but if you pick it up in the wrong one it will be incredibly useless.

3060.png3512.png

Banner of Command and Zz'rot Portal are more situational but can be very useful. Keep them in mind if you want to apply a bit of split pressure, but I generally don't build them.

3102.png

Literally only build this if you have already finished Locket and for some reason still need more magic resist.

BUILD ORDER

I'm going to give a few different situations and give you a build order. This will help you see what I'm saying above a bit more clearly. I might add some more examples later but this should be enough for now.

SITUATION #1: I have a Tristana at ADC, we have finished lane slightly ahead, and it looks like we have a good chance to increase our lead in teamfights.

3302.png2003.png3340.png > 2049.png > 3341.png > 3117.png > 3401.png > 3050.png > 3800.png > 3190.png > 2045.png

SITUATION #2: The same situation as before, except I have an Ezreal.

3302.png2003.png3340.png > 2049.png > 3341.png >  3117.png > 3401.png >  3800.png > 3110.png > 3190.png >  2045.png

SITUATION #3: The enemy Ahri gets fed.

3302.png2003.png3340.png > 2049.png > 3341.png > 3117.png > 3401.png > 3190.png  > 3143.png > 3800.png > 2045.png

SITUATION #4: Our mid-laner, Zed, gets fed. NOTE: By Zed, I mean a mid-laner that has kill pressure. It can be worth to go this type of build if your mid-laner is a mage, but make sure you can get the kill or this won't be efficient at all.

3302.png2003.png3340.png > 2049.png > 3341.png > 3117.png > 3401.png > 3742.png > 3800.png > 3190.png > 2045.png

SITUATION #5: We go a little behind in bottom lane.

3302.png2003.png3340.png > 2049.png > 3341.png > 3117.png > 3401.png > 3143.png >  3190.png > 3800.png > 2045.png

This should give you a good general idea on a build order for Leona.
