Summoner Spells Back to Top

INTRODUCTION

Do you love yordles?! Do you love off-meta builds that make your opponents scratch their heads in bewilderment?! Do you love the taste of purple?! Welcome to BlueLu! This is the attack-speed, "on-hit" build for Lulu, the Fae Sorceress!

LuluPixelArt.jpg

Lulu is a fun little fairy yordle champion! Because she was originally designed to be a support character, her kit has a TON of utility! The idea behind making an attack-speed, on-hit build for Lulu is her passive: Pix lulupassive.png. Pix is the little fairy that follows Lulu around and shoots three little bolts at her targets. This becomes quite a powerful source of damage with the synergy of attack speed!

Why is she called "BlueLu"? Following the theme of "Blue Ezreal," most of your items you build end up being blue! ^_^ More details in the "Items" section.

You will drink your enemies' tears (many more below!):

HISTORY

I am a tremendous on-hit Teemo lover back from Season 2, but while Teemo excels at applying split-pushing pressure, his team-fight presence can be a bit lacking. Moreover, your team oftentimes won't capitalize on your split-push pressure. By contrast, on-hit Lulu plays similarly to the old on-hit Teemo, but exchanges some damage output for infinitely more utility and teamfight presence!

Two years-ago the Diamond-level player PabloTheTwig made an AP on-hit Lulu guide [link] at Solomid.net, which he continues to play to this day. A handful of months ago, the Master-level player Aqua Dragon made a guide optimizing on-hit Jungle Lulu [link]. Now, I'm not a Diamond or Master level player, but I just throw these out as examples of very high-caliber level players who are able to make this build work and have a crap-load of fun, while still being very competitively viable and strong!

P.S. If you are a Lulu main, I have the club "Lu*Lu" and would be happy to add you!

SUMMONER SPELLS

12.png TELEPORT -- Pretty standard commentary: it's a great summoner spell because it gives you more map presence. When a fight breaks out bot-lane, or if you're pushing top and it's time to contest dragon, you can immediately join your team. BONUS TIP: If your opponent has teleport, Lulu's W luluw.png will interrupt the teleport cast and waste it! Don't be scared to use it to get back to lane. I pretty much take this 100% of the time in top lane.

21.png  BARRIER -- If I go botlane ADC Lulu, I really like Barrier. The cooldown is really low on it, and you can "healbait" in the same way in duels, but it's up much more frequently. In combination with your E-shield and R-health, you become extremely deceptively tanky, baiting fights even better.

3.png  EXHAUST -- As far as fights breaking out and duels, Exhaust is just incredible. Not only does it reduce enemy damage and slow them, but it reduces their armor and MR as well. The cooldown isn't too long, and it's up fairly frequently. I've heard it called the best non-Flash summ, and it's hard for me to disagree.

7.png  HEAL -- If you're playing botlane and just want to go conservative and safe, you can always go Heal as well. It's easy and straightforward, doesn't require planning and thinking in advance like Barrier does, and is safer to just button-mash when needed.

14.png  IGNITE -- I basically only get this against Nasus. Prolly good against Fiora, now that I think about it.

Masteries Back to Top

Ganked-Lulu-Is-Moses.png

I personally love the huge unexpected burst of Thunderlords. Lulu is fantastic at easily proc'ing TL, with a simple E + autoattack + Q combo. You can get incredible harass off on your opponent this way -- just keep an eye on the HUD/GUI indicator cooldown for when a proc is available again, and blast 'em. You can frequently get your opponent very low, and they'll be CS'ing under turret thinking they're relatively safe, without realizing the huge burst from Thunderlords -- many, many kills to be had this way. Especially after double Doran's Ring 1056.png.

In top lane, I go "Assassin" in the middle Cunning tree -- but if I'm botlane, I switch this to "Secret Stash." If you're botlane with a partner, also change "Fresh Blood" in the Ferocity tree to be "Expose Weakness." If you're botlane, run "Dangerous Game" -- but if I'm toplane, I will frequently run "Greenfather's Gift" as well. This gives more damage, but it also encourages your playstyle to utilize bush control better -- something frequently overlooked in top lane.

Get ready to consistently be at the top of the charts for damage dealt to champions:

Lulu-DumbBuild.png

lulupassive.png PIX: Thankfully for this little guy, we can have our on-hit attack-speed Lulu! Pix shoots three little bolts after each auto-attack. As you level he increases damage. Bear in mind: his bolts are mini-projectiles that will not automagically pass through enemy units and hit your target! So lane minions can block a bit here. As you become proficient with this, you can sometimes use bolts to clear multiple minions at once during waveclear and lane-pushing, etc.

Riot buffed Pix in 7.2, so now his damage increases every single level instead of every-other-level -- as well as a flat damage increase, as well. Fantastic!

Winrate of Ability Order (Korea)

Ability-Winrate.JPG

Over time I've come to see that leveling W before E is better, and it's nice to see the statistics from Korea back that up as well.

Note: At level 2, I take either E or W depending on the matchup. E for more burst and harass, W for strong early opponents who will try to all-in or duel me.

luluq.png GLITTERLANCE: Great for slowing the opponent and getting in some poke damage. This'll be your main nuke-spam ability. You can especially use it in synergy with your "E", to get much more range out of your poke. For example, if an enemy has low health and is either running away or hiding under turret, you can apply your "E" Pix to an enemy minion, then blast a "Q" Glitterlance off of it to get much more range and hit your opponent. You will frequently use this to finish kills, get off extra slows to catch up in the chase, etc.!!

Pix-Extension.png

luluw.png WHIMSY: This little ability is a nice double-whammy. When cast offensively, it is Lulu's trademark polymorph ability, functionally silencing, CC'ing, and interrupting your opponent. But it was also recently BUFFED, when Riot nerfed AP Lulu's Q damage! Now when self-cast (or on your ally ADC!), not only does it cast a movement speed buff, but an attack speed buff, as well! So while Riot was nerfing "lane Lulu" in her AP variant, and trying to still maintain support Lulu's strength, they actually have inadvertently buffed our version of lane Lulu: on-hit!

Early game you'll use Whimsy to get around the map, gain attack speed to finish off a fleeing enemy, etc. You'll also use it when Riven or someone dives you to do their "all-in" combos, and you can polymorph them mid-cycle and get away.

When it gets to late game, you'll already have a crapload of attack speed from your items. Instead, you'll always want to strategize on who the best opponent to polymorph is, and use it then. Late-game, the polymorph feels like it lasts FOREVER -- it really does completely shut down an enemy champion.

Bonus tip: When attacking a turret, cast this on your ADC, who likely has more straight-AD damage than you. When your lane opponent is casting teleport, you can cast this to polymorph them, and disrupt and expend the cast!!

cupcakes.jpg

lulue.png HELP, PIX!: I used to max this second after Q, but now I do W first and use this mainly for utility to land Qs and get Thunderlords procs. It becomes a nice extra nuke that scales off of your AP, and helps you land your glitterlances, etc. If you build the AD or hybrid builds, your "E" can become more of a "one-point wonder" ability. You can use it for a mini-nuke or shield, an extension to your Glitterlance, or cast on the enemy right before they enter a bush for maintaining visual contact.

This is especially fantastic against stealthy assassins!! Akali gets dumpstered, as well as Talon, etc.

lulur.png WILD GROWTH: Lulu's ultimate is absolutely incredible. Knockup hard-CC? Check. Huge health boost/heal that doesn't disappear after a duration like a shield would? Check. Soft-CC with AoE slows surrounding you? Check. And the best part: you aren't limited to casting your ulti on yourself, but can cast it on allies, as well! This is especially great for using on your frontline tank after they initiate, for another huge follow-up AoE-CC. You can also use it in lane if you're being ganked for CC, heal, etc.

It's one of the most underrated ultis in the game.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Doran's Ring is THE most gold-efficient item in the game, spending 400g for 736g worth of stats -- helps with mana problems, and is blue ;-P. Buy TWO for insane early strength.
    Jungle Start

Core Items

Lane opponent AP, and/or 2+ AP champs on opposing team. Synergizes with a nice "tankier" build.
Main DPS item after 2 Doran's Rings if there's 2+ tanky champs on opposing team.
Main DPS jungle item. Component build order: Sabre --> Recurve Bow --> Brown Boots --> Bloodrazor
If you're not insta-buying BoRK (vs. tanks) or Wit's End (vs. AP), you can choose Nashor's Tooth, Gunblade, or Rageblade. Nashor's is good for CDR, and a combination of AP burst with sustained DPS. 139% gold efficiency!! One of the top-two highest win-rate items on Lulu in Korea.
If you're not insta-buying BoRK or Wit's End, Gunblade can be an option. Gunblade is better for BURST (from its active and the AP) and SUSTAIN -- but not as much sustained DPS.
If you're not insta-buying BoRK or Wit's End, Rageblade can be an option. Rageblade is good if you have enough time to get a significant amount of autos off, for heightened sustained-DPS. Great hybrid split of damage. Effect is much better after other on-hit dmg items. Good late-game replacement for Wit's End.
Tank up vs. AD, fantastic for locking down opponents for more sustained DPS to apply.
Tank up vs. AP. Fantastic added CDR, and great synergy with lifesteal from BoRK or Gunblade (or BOTH!!)
Merc Treads vs. crowd control. Tabi for heavy AD/auto-attack opponents. If you're already building Wit's End and Spirit Visage, Ninja Tabi can complement your already-strong MR.
After lane phase, teamfight time - Usually after 1-2 other items. Also great for splitpush pressure with teleport!
If your team needs more AD dmg, and helps with CDR. Helps tank up a wee bit too.
Your team needs AD damage - Only 97% gold-efficient, but very well-rounded. I never, ever build it.

Tank-Lulu-DAFUQ.png

EVERY GAME IS DIFFERENT!

In order to decide your build path, you must ask a series of questions:

Does my team need more AD or AP?

Does my team need more DPS or more frontline/tank?

Is my lane opponent AD or AP?

In lane should I build offensively or defensively?

Is the opposing team super tanky or more squishy?

If you have an AD assassin mid, AD jungler, and botlane ADC, then you should go more AP or hybrid top. If you have an AP jungler and AP mid, then you should build more AD or hybrid top, etc.

See the item breakdown above for notes on each option, depending on the context.

Since we're building Attack-Speed Lulu, we have a few champion friends that can be our guides for tips on how to build: Teemo, Kayle, and Kindred -- among others.

Korean builds from na.op.gg

If you use the website NA.OP.GG, we can toggle it to look at Korea, and see what the very best master players build on their respective champions -- filtered by winrate, pickrate, etc. It uses only data from Platinum and higher tiers.

We can also see which late-game items have the highest winrate on each champion.

17.png = 3089.png3087.png3135.png3091.png

203.png = 3026.png3022.png3071.png3156.png

This gives us a helpful baseline as to what types of items will be especially good for attack-speed Lulu. We can also tweak it based on champion differences: Kayle's "E" is an active spell, so Rylai's procs off of her autos, but doesn't for Lulu; Teemo's AP shrooms account for the Deathcap, etc.

STARTING ITEMS

1056.png2003.pngDoran's Ring. Did you know? Doran's Ring is literally the most gold-efficient item in the entire game, apart from fully-stacked items like Mejai's. It's 184% gold-efficient, meaning for the 400 gold you spend, you're getting 736 gold-worth of stats.

Regardless of whether you go AD, Hybrid, or AP, Doran's Ring is pretty much always my start. The Doran's items have amazing cost-value for stats. Doran's Ring is 50% more gold-efficient than Doran's Blade, and it synergizes better with Lulu because it gives your spell abilities extra oomph, as well as significantly helping with Lulu's poor mana pool.

You can also go double-Doran's to start, which I've seen master Korean Teemo players do. This is what I do 100% of the time now.

Also important to note is that the Doran's Ring matches our theme: it's blue! ;-P

METAGOLEM

Remember the old Season 2 "metagolem" build?

metagolem.jpg

The metagolem build was something you built on pretty much every single top-lane champion and just had easy success: Jarvan, Irelia, Gangplank, you name it. (The item on the right was the old "Atma's Impaler" item.)

The new metagolem build might be something like: Frozen Mallet, Merc Treads, Wit's End, Spirit Visage, and then a fill item (in our case, Runaan's Hurricane). This is if you just want to be a bruiser tanky-DPS, and throw your weight around like you don't give AF. The utility from your kit, and the damage from your autos, and the slows from your mallet, are just horrifying and make a cocktail of pure awesome.

You'll get fun feedback like this:

Jungling Back to Top

I don't jungle as much, so I'm not a pro. However, jungling is still extremely possible! Aqua Dragon wrote an entire guide for on-hit guide just for jungle Lulu alone (linked in the introduction) -- although my build is significantly different.

I have a plat-buddy, Xyroph (NA), who is a jungle main, and I asked him to do some Practice Mode run-throughs with Lulu in the jungle.

Ability order, start level 1 with E and always use it as a shield!!:

lulue.png 1 ---> luluq.png 2 ---> luluq.png 3 ---> luluw.png 4

Masteries:

Jungle-Masteries.JPG

*****

POWER-FARM FULL CLEAR

Blue Buff --> Gromp (Smite) --> Wolves --> Raptors --> Red Buff (Smite) --> Krugs (finish @ 4:20)

Can be done w/ no leash and no pots!!

*****

LEVEL 3 GANK CLEAR

Blue Buff --> Gromp (Smite) --> Red Buff

*****

RED BUFF START

Red Buff --> Gromp (Smite) --> Blue Buff

Gromp's first two attacks are bursty/crit, so use shield to stop most of his damage. Lulu's good single-target damage is best at Gromp, versus other camps.

Jungle-Runes.JPG

And according to Aqua Dragon's jungle Lulu guide, the best item build path is:

3715.png Sabre ---> 1043.png Recurve Bow ----> 1001.png Boots ---> 1419.png Finish Jg Item

Here's his commentary. The "pots" languages refers to how many charges of the jungling pot are remaining after the clear. (He also said you can do it without any pots):

Updates Back to Top

02/18/17 -- Added a jungling section, different clears, etc. Added more detailed commentary on Masteries and what to change in different contexts. Tweaked the item commentary significantly, added notes on Gunblade and Rageblade, etc..

02/01/17 -- Doing some testing on rushing Hextech Gunblade, so far it seems super gud.

Gunblade-MatchHistory.JPG

01/30/17 -- Significantly updated the Runes section, tweaked Masteries commentary, added Summoner Spell options and commentary, tweaked some Abilities commentary, added an entire new section for match-up data. Will be working to continue updating the Items section as well! Lulu has launched up to the 8th highest champion winrate!

Winrate.JPG

01/28/17 -- Q mana buffs, Pix DPS increase -- Lulu OP, lol. Added some rage tears to the top section.

12/3/16 -- Significant tweaks to the item build section, looking at Korean builds for other on-hit champions, etc.! All data-driven from NA.OP.GG!

11/25/16 Update -- Changed masteries and runes -- experimenting with Guinsoo's Rageblade!

Good news! In patch 6.16, Lulu's "W" luluw.png on self-cast got yet another attack speed buff!

9/8/2016 Update -- Bug fix to Lulu's Q slow, another buff, LOL.
