Summoner Spells Back to Top

My prefered summoners are: 12.png4.png.  Teleport has several uses.

1) Get back to lane quickly.  Don't feel bad if you run out of sustain and need to back early.  Better to use this now than to lose a little cs.
2) Get an easy gank on bottom.  You can teleport to one of your teams lane wards behind the enemy, and this provides an easy double kill pickup if you have your ultimate and your team doesn't ignore you.
3) Easy split pushing without worry of the opposing team taking objectives.

Cunning-Malphite is a mana hog and so you MUST have meditation.  This is the main reason to go up the cunning tree.

Resolve-I try to focus on things that increase his resistances since he scales well with armor.  Runic Armor ends up better than the 45 HP from Veteran's Scars.  Early levels, I'd say they are pretty equal but late game the extra shield when you have more max HP is more useful.  Grasp of the undying is great for short trades early game.

Generally, I will start Q vs all Ranged champions.  If I am vs a melee champion I start E so that I can brawl better early.  It's also nice for clearing waves early to either help you get lvl 2 faster.

I will always max Q before any other ability because it is Malphite's strongest poke.  Stealing speed from your target is also pretty significant for your team to be able to kill whoever you target also.  His Q adds 50 damage per level, and his E only adds 40 damage per level.  Once you get to higher levels, the Q is more cost efficient (even though they both are a mana drain).

Do not wait until you max your other abilities before putting a point into W.  Putting just a single point increases your armor and AD by 20%.  This is a pretty substantial increase if you go into a fight that has a lot of heavy AD.  It also allows you to push your lane quicker when you need because of the splash it also provides.  This is important if you are trying to shove out so that you can teleport bottom for a gank.  It also helps you last hit under a turret too early levels.  Activate W with the bonus damage you already have and you can last hit much easier.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Basic start if you're vs a heavy AP that will be pushing your lane (Rumble, SInged, maybe vladimir)
    Sustain matchup vs any AD.
Basic start vs heavy aggressive AD (Riven)
If you are vs a powerful AP top, try to rush these 2 items so you can trade and sustain. (Rumble, Vladimir)

Core Items

If the enemy team is super AD based.
If you are vs a high AP comp.
Get this item EVERY game no matter what
I like these as my core if the enemy team is very balanced

Situational Items

If nobody else is grabbing this, you might want to think about it for yourself.
Only build this vs a super AD comp
This is a great item when the enemy team has multiple auto attackers (ADC + Tryn/Jax)
If you don't have much AP on your team, or your mid behind and lacking in damage. High AP + armor. Both scale well with malphite.
Great item when there are many AD based opponents and you want to slow them more and deal additional damage.
Only grab this if you are having time vs a hard auto attacker or you are dealing with a lane swap.

Early game:  There are lots of starts you can do here depending on your own playstyle and who you are matched vs.

If you are vs an AP heavy opponent, you definitely want to start one of the faerie charm builds and Rush 3028_32.png and then 3111_32.png.  These 2 items alone, should put your MR over 100 while at the same time giving you that great tenacity and lots of mana.  They will let you trade spells and either try to come even or out trade your matchup.  After you have these items, you will still want to rush 3068_32.png next.

If you are vs an AD heavy opponent, you either want to start 2041_32.png.  If you can manage it, I prefer the 2041_32.png because over time it will save you a lot more money.  Malphite also runs out of mana easily, and so the 2041_32.png will definitely help negate some of that.  The first items you will want to rush in these matchups are 3068_32.png and MAYBE 3047_32.png.  If you are having a hard time in the matchup, or the enemy team is very heavy AD then you can get the 3047_32.png before 3068_32.png.

Mid/Late game:  From here, you want to build according to the enemy team.  At this point you already have:
3068_32.png1001_32.png VS AD
3028_32.png3111_32.png3068_32.png VS AP

The next thing you might want to build is another 1011_32.png because health is the best scaling defensive stat, and it scales on 54_64.png even better because of his passive shield.  From here you can either finish your randuins, or build 1057_32.png if you are suffering from Magic damage.

Most games, I will recommend getting 3111_32.png for that tenacity.  I only get 3047_32.png if my AD lane top is hard (or just does lots of heavy AD like 92_64.png)

VS

Akali

Hard

This matchup is really annoying but if you play safe you should survive.  It turns into a problem if she gets some vamp since your harass won't really do much to her anymore and she might end up killing you quickly.

VS

Cho'Gath

Medium

This is strictly a farm lane.  You might be able to get an early kill if your jungler comes for a gank.  Otherwise just focus on getting all the farm you can and don't get hit by an impale.  If you do, he might be able to nuke you very hard once he hits 6 and potentially kill you.

VS

Darius

Medium

This is one of the harder Medium matchups.  The main reason is his bleeding will cause your shield to recharge slowly, and once he hits 6 he gets a huge spike to the damage he can deal.  Rush your 3068_32.png for that health and armor and get a second 1011_32.png early.  If you can manage to get your sunfire without dying to him and if you are fairly even in CS, you might actually be able to beat him head on in a fight.  It might still be a good idea to have your jungler help to be sure.

VS

Diana

Hard

This will basically turn into you trying to survive and farm off of the tower.  You don't do enough damage to break her shield and so she will be able to just poke and shove you like crazy allowing her to freely roam if she desires.  Try to avoid this matchup.

VS

Elise

Hard

Another difficult matchup.  She can poke you from ranged easily.  I haven't tried vs her with my new build vs AP opponents, so she may actually be easier than I remember.  Just try to farm and once you hit 3 see if you can trade her with abilities a little and ask for jungle help.

VS

Fiora

Easy

Similar to 92_64.png, except she doesn't have that powerful level 2 spike.  It doesn't mean to be greedy though because 114_64.png can still put out good damage.  Ask for jungle help if she has super sustain runes/masteries.  She doesnt have a good escape.  Rush a Thornmail then Sunfire and she can never trade with you.  Play safe early game until you get the Thornmail because she is still stronger even though I marked this as an easy lane.

VS

Gangplank

Easy

His poke doesn't do enough damage compared to yours.  Do a basic sustain build and then poke him once you are 3.  He can't hurt you much but you can definitely hurt him.

VS

Garen

Medium

Hes really annoying.  You will likely never be able to kill him, but the same should be true for you.  You might want to play passive until your jungler is near, or he goes in on you.  If that is the case (if you are lvl 3 or after) focus on poking him.  If he backs off, he is likely trying to use his passive to heal up.  Try walking close enough to throw a shard then going back to farming.  Make sure that you don't get setup for a jungle bait though.

VS

Irelia

Medium

This is only a hard matchup because of her really high sustain.  Try to get jungle help early.  Otherwise do your early sustain and just focus on farming.  Make sure that if she dives on you, you at least trade her with an auto attack and pokes before backing off.  If you have a Sunfire + Frozen Heart you should win Trades.  If you have a Thornmail as well she can't beat you.

VS

Jax

Medium

This isn't a bad matchup.  He can't do too much to you.  I recommend going the early sustain, but 1029_32.png2003_32.pngx5 can work here too.  Just be careful once he hits level 6.  Every 3rd auto attack he does bonus damage.  He might hit minions twice and then leap on you and back off to try to get that bonus damage in.

VS

Lee Sin

Hard

He is a very difficult matchup because his shield can deny you farm easily and he can hit you very hard early.  You need to just go full sustain and focus on farming unless a jungler comes to help.  Even then be careful because he might just turn and kill you anyways.

VS

Nasus

Medium

This is basically just a farm fest.  You can't hurt him, and he can't hurt you very much.  If you get a kill early from jungle help great.  Otherwise just conserve your mana and focus on farming.  Rush your 3068_32.png.  Once you have that you can actually go offensive on him and keep shoving your lane.

VS

Renekton

Medium

He will typically out damage you and out sustain you.  Just focus on farming and start E.  Once you get Sunfire cloak, you can probably beat him in a head on fight but be careful you don't die.  Just focus on shoving the lane at that point unless someone else comes to help.  Late game you should be so much more useful than him.  So just focus on the farming.

VS

Riven

Easy

Fairly easy matchup.  Start 1029_32.png2003_32.pngx5.  Be wary of her early game.  At level 2, if she's any good she will try to keep going all in on you when her CDs are up.  Try your best to avoid these early on.  Start E level 1 in order to negate this extra damage and for the easier wave clear.  If you can manage to live to level 3-4, things should look up.  Watch for her shield activations, and as soon as it goes out chunk her with your Q and E then get back out fast.  If you give her the early kills though, she can snowball out of control and destroy you.  Rush your 3068_32.png items each time you go back to base.  If you don't have enough to afford parts of it, then finish your 3047_32.png early instead.

VS

Rumble

Hard

I usually start of 2x 1004_32.png 3x 2003_32.pngand build into 3028_32.png and 3111_32.png ASAP.  This allows for very easy sustain so that you can farm under turret and take minimal damage from poking.  From here I generally build health and even building a 3068_32.png even though it gives armor.  If you have some MR quints once you have these three items you should be able to actually beat rumble in a head on fight as long as you don't stand in his equalizer because if your very high MR and health.

VS

Ryze

Medium

This matchup is pretty odd.  Try to get level 3 and then trading.  You will likely win normal trades, but his CDs go off faster and he will have a much larger mana pool.  Be careful you don't feed him.  If you can get your jungler to gank, he dies quickly.

VS

Shen

Medium

Start 2041_32.png2003_32.png2044_32.png.  I definitely want to run teleport in this lane.  It will be another farmfest.  Some shen's might go offensive.  Be careful because he can trade slightly better.  Rush your 3068_32.png.

Your main job early will be to counter his ultimate.  You can do this in 2 ways.  You can waste your ultimate to knock him out of his, OR you can teleport to the same area he is going to fight with your team.  I prefer the second scenario because you will bring so much more to the team fight than he will.

VS

Tryndamere

Easy

Play somewhat safe early.  You can start trading early but just make sure you don't die and give him early kills.  Start E in this matchup.  You can either start cloth/5 or flask witih potions.  It's all up to you.

The first item you should rush is a Thornmail.  Once you have this there is really very little he can do vs you.  After this rush a Sunfire and it's a cakewalk.

VS

Vladimir

Medium

Do the 1004_32.pngx2 2003_32.pngx3 start.  Try to focus on passive farming levels 1-2.  Once you hit 3, you can start trading him.  Try to conserve mana until then.  This is one of the matchups you might think about running 14.png for.  I still prefer 12.png so that I can get back to lane quickly, and get an easy gank bottom once I hit level 6.  If your jungler comes to gank around the time you hit 3, you should probably be able to get an easy kill because vladimir will likely naturally push you.

VS

Zed

Easy

Go 2041_32.png2004_32.png to start.  Try to wait until level 3 and begin poking a lot.  You should be able to hit him MUCH harder than he can hit you for.  After you hit him with your Q, try to run close enough to hit with your E and then back off again (auto attack optional if he comes within range).  Make sure each back you get sustain and rush your 3068_32.png asap.  Once you have it, the rest of the match will be a cakewalk.  Just go crazy on him.

Synergies Back to Top

61_64.png -> Ball delivery system (She tosses her ball on Malphite and then he ultimates onto the enemy carries.  She then activates her abilities and ult and they instantly get deleted)

62_64.png -> Double the knockup power if he comes in right after you.  Their team will be in serious trouble.

117_64.png -> If you can manage to hit multiple people with your ultimate and lulu uses her ultimate on you, the enemies will be knocked incredibly high.  This much cc on multiple enemies is a real game changer.

157_64.png -> Great to knock up a bunch of people for his ult.

Any other tank -> Convince your other tank to be the main initiator.  Typically the enemy team will clump around the other initiator to try to kill them.  This leaves them in a great position for a 54_64.png ultimate to hit 3-5 people at once.

Roles Back to Top

Initiator tank

This will typically be your main role.  Your goal here is to catch 1-2 of the enemies carries with your ultimate, and then go crazy on them.

General tank
There is already another tank/Initiator on your team.  Your role here is simply doing as much disruption and damage as possible.  Save your ultimate to either hit multiple enemies or use it to save your carries.  Just stand where the fighting is deepest and use all of your Abilities/Actives where they will hit the maximum number of people.

Defensive tank
Try to use your abilities/Actives to peel the enemy tanks/bruisers off of your own carries.
There are 2 scenarios where this might be your role.
1) You have another tank and the enemy bruisers are good at hopping on top of your carries
2) The enemy team is clearly ahead and your team can't afford to lead the engage.

Splitpusher - MUST HAVE 12.png
Try to get a strong push going one lane, and have your team pushing another.  The enemy team has to decide where they are going.  If they go for you, simply back up and let your team take out objectives.  MAKE SURE TO ALWAYS HAVE 2044_32.png NEAR WHERE YOU ARE PUSHING.  One good strategy is to push bottom hard while your team clears baron wards.  If the enemy goes for you, then your team should be able to clear baron quickly.  If the enemy goes for your team, they should safely back from baron and you should be able to take or hurt an objective bottom.  If they actually manage to initiate on your team OR they get close to you bottom, you can then use teleport to go assist your team.

Key Items Back to Top

2044_32.png - This is your most important item.  Never leave base without it.  Drop them at key areas so that the enemy team can never surprise you and get an early kill or make you waste your ultimate.  Always have several of these ready to drop if you are split pushing with 12.png.

3068_32.png - This is your next most important item.  It gives you everything that you need.  Health is the best scaling defensive strat even more on Malphite because of his passive.  It also provides armor which scales with his W and causes his E to do additional damage.  Sunfire's passive gives great constant aoe damage which is perfect for splitpushing or clearing waves.

3143_32.png - Such an amazing later game item.  After you ultimate into a fight, you can hit E and activate this item at the same time.  It synergizes so well because you knock up so many people and after they land they move extremely slow and also attack extremely slow.  It is such a crippling combination for the enemy team.

Replays Back to Top

I will be adding these soon.  I'm currently having issues with my streamer causing me to disconnect from games.

EDIT:  I think I found the issue that was disconnecting me.  My router firmware update HOPEFULLY fixed it.  We will find out tonight.

EDIT 2:  The issue is resolved... but Twitch didn't tell me that it would automatically stop saving my streams so I need to remake replays again.  I probably won't be able to get to it until later this weekend.

EDIT 3:  First replay.  I should have more coming.

EDIT 4:  I won't be putting up more replays... my ISP is crappy and lags when I stream.
