Summoner Spells Back to Top

Flash and Smite, These are really the only two Summoner Spells that make sense on Malph, Flash to get you places, or to get you out of said places when things go bad. Then there's smite, the bane of Dragons, The killer of Baron, and with some of those nifty jungle items, will help you knock a few champs off your rift

New Runes Back to Top

So theres not too much different you can do with these runes, maybe swap Unflinching with Font of Life if you're feeling like a team player.

For the secondary, Sorcery is probably the best, Ultimate hat lowers you're cooldown by 5% and stacks, that is a godsend to Malph since you're ganks / initiating revolve around yout ult.

If you look at my Malph plays, Honestly my Ability points are all over the place. Sometimes I feel like maxing Q first, just for that delicious cheese wheel poke and slow, but a majority of the time, it can come second to your E

Your passive is based off your health, more HP you have, the bigger a shield your going to get, self explanatory, but once you have enough health, you'll be eating Spears for breakfast, with a side of Teemo stew.

Your Q is usually the second maxed out spell, It slows the enemy and gives you their speed to close gaps. Pre-Six, its the only way you're going to get a successful gank. If you're AP heavy, and don't need the extra tank, You could even max this out first.

Your W is a damage boosting cleave. Pop it, and you gain Area damage on your Auto Attacks; plus bonus damage based off your armor, and AP. If you fall behind early game due to say...counter jungling, or a failed gank. It can be worth putting a few early points in here, to clear the jungle a little faster.

Your E...Oh boy...HULK SMASH. You hit the ground so hard. AoE damage based off your armor/AP. Slows Attack speed. And is usually the first spell I max out.

Your R, Listen, at level six, just put Miley Cyrus on repeat, because you're coming in like a wrecking ball. Base damage is great, gains more from your AP, it has some pretty good range, and is perhaps one of the best looking engages out there. Wait for the enemy team to group up, place the targeting reticle over them, and watch the Rock Monster fly through the air like Jordan, and send the enemy team airborne for 1.5 seconds. Just try not to telegraph it, if the enemy sees you barreling right at them, its pretty easy to flash out of this ult.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

    My Start

Core Items

Typical build, Tabis can be swapped out for Merc treads vs AP heavy comps, but this will get you a solid super tanky Malphite who lives through just about anything.

Situational Items

Enemy Team all AP? Well that kinda screws with your sweet armor bonus your spells get, but lets you get away with building more items with AP then you normally would, I take banner here for the extra push, slap a cannon creep and team fight knowing you're pushing another lane to victory!
All AD? This is the kind of comp the rock monster lives for, that juicy armor synergy .
Items, Sometimes your build will look this way. Sometimes it could be completely different.

The starts a bit different now, I prefer to go with the Hunters Talisman and the Refillable potion. Back as soon as you can buy the machete, then farm until can afford your enchant / Bamis Cinder

Now of the three enchants (RIP trailblazers)

Trackers, Trackers might be my go to enchant. Vision still wins games. And frees up your trinket for one of the other trinkets, or go with the trinket ward, more wards more wins.

Now the Stalkers, its an extra slow and some damage on a champ. You already have a slow, Why do you need another? Because sticking to your enemy is important. and sometimes your Q is on cool down.

Boots are simple. Who is killing it in this game? AD champs? Get Tabi. AP champs? Get Mercs. No one? Get you some Mobility and pressure the lanes.

Armor:
I always grab a Dead Mans Plate. Its a perfect addition to Malphite, It speeds him up. It gives him bonus damage. It Synergizes with his Passive, W, and E. Usually my second/ Third built item.

Thornmail. For those Pesky ADCs who like to poke at you. Poke them back. Gives a pretty nice bonus to your W and E aswell. I tend to shy away from it if theres only one AD threat though.

Ice Born Gauntlet. They Removed the bonus AP, but left the Passive for your auto attacks after using an ability. Now it scales off your AD so maybe not AS good as it was but still useful. As always its packed with Armor which is just perfect for a Malph, and even a little mana! Plus the size of the passive grows with your armor.

Randuin's Omen. Health for your passive, Armor for your Spells, Slows Auto attacks, Reduces crit damage, and that active goes great after you ult in on team fights, make sure no one can escape..From the fun!

Magic Resist:
Abyssal Scepter: Raw Ability Power. Flat MR. Reduces Enemies MR. If the mid doesnt build it, and they have some form of AP Mid champ, I would grab this. Third, or even fourth. Usually its the only item with any AP you'll need to do loads of damage.

Spirit Visage: Loads of health, increased Regen, and a good ammount of MR. A solid build, and synergizes well with Warmogs and if you have any lifesteal, its going to amplify it 20%

Banshee's Veil: Almost the same as Spirit Visage, health and MR in good quantities, More regen, But its passive is quite useful, Especially if theres one particular spell that does loads of damage. (Think Lux ult, Veigar Ult, and any other caster silly enough to try and hurt you with magic)

The options:
Banner of Command: Looks great on paper, and has everything a growing rock monster needs to get strong, Health, MR, Ability Power, CDR, And some more health regen! The main reason Ive picked it up on Malph, is also the promote. Slap a seige creep with it, and head off to team fight, knowing that lane will push itself, forcing an enemy to either come stop it, or risk minions getting a tower

Maw of Malmortius: Not the best buy on Malph, MR is good, the passives help when you're low / fighting a heavy AP comp, and I guess anyone can benefit from the AD. There are better items out there, I Would say avoid this, but it can have its place if you're going with a hybrid AD/AP Malph.

Locket of the iron Solari: Health, MR, Regen, and CDR. Not to mention the active and passive. If the support doesnt build it. And your team could use the MR, or is having trouble with enemy AoE, This is a solid buy.

Titanic Hydra: Atmas is back, and its more useful than ever. This is a good buy if you're going for that Hybrid AD/AP build. The health goes right into your passive. You gain more regen, and the AD helps your autos. The big deal here is, that passive/active. Its cleave does more damage, based of YOUR health. you know. all that health your stacking for your passive. Why not make it work for your damage aswell?! use the active whenever possible for more damage

Righteous Glory: Health. Mana. Regen. Sure, all things you need. But this is purely for the active. Pop that active, and watch as your team catches up with the fleeing enemy.

AP options:
Rod Of Ages, You know I want to say no, but its bonus' are telling me yes? health. Mana, Ability power. That passive early one will help you sustain in the jungle. But, if you dont get it second. Dont get it at all.

Rylai's Crystal Scepter: AP and health in mass quantities, and the slow will work off you're spells. Its not a bad buy at all. But aside from the health, nothing here makes you quite tanky. Get it if you're ahead/dont need the extra armor

Liandry's torment: Health, AP, Magic Pen, and a DoT that does more damage to people who are slowed? Synergizes great with your Q. Not much tankiness to it, aside from the health though. Get it, if you're having trouble finishing off your ganks. That burn can lock in more kills than you would think.

Athenes Unholy Grail: MR, Mana Regen, AP, and CDR. All great stats, if you find you're running out of mana constantly try fitting this into your build.

Twin Shadows: not somthing I personally build, The AP is great, The CDR helps, and movement speed is always good. The active can slow people down for your ganks, and reveal those pesky hidden champs. I would get it last, and only if you are ahead.

Risky Picks:
Sterak's Gage: 500 health isnt something to sniff at, that goes right into your passive, aswell as your massive health pool. +25% Base attack damage, means if you already have an AD item in your build ((Maw & Titanic Hydra) this item can really give you a boost. But why I put it here, is that passive. Take damage. Gain even MORE AD, A sheild based off 30% of your MAX health. And you also grow in size. Great for baiting fights / turning you into the Hulk

Ohmwrecker: do you want a kill? but that pesky towers always shooing you away. NOT ANY MORE! Ohmwrecker, Health, Armor, and lock that tower up for 3 whole seconds. Enough time to kill a squishy and get out. its really a solid buy with its stats. but unless you're diving under tower quite often. I would give it a pass.

Warmogs: Lots o' health. Lots o' Regen. Synergizes well with your passive, for a huge sheild to soak up all that damage from front lining. If you have a spirit visage, the health regen will keep you going long after the battles are over. Just make sure you dont get ignited.

VS

Aatrox

Medium

Aatrox, Normally he'll be Top or Jungle, Keys to ganking him are watching for his passive, ask your top lane if hes used it recently. If Yes, this is an easy gank, if not, you may have to kill him twice. After laning phase  he wont be targeting you, but one of the squishier champs. Peel as hard as you can, Q to slow 'em down, E to slow his attacks, and if you didn't engage with it, Your ult can save your carries life..

Top Lane:

Pre-Six your ganks may not be the greatest. Wait for him to push toward your tower, Be sure your top laner can back up the gank. Stroll in, hit him with your Q before he can leap/dive away to slow down his escape, forcing him to fight or flash.

Post-Six, Your gank is a lot more effective. Again, Walk in, Q>W>E smite him if you have the Stalkers/Skirmishers. Between you and your Top Laner, he should try to dive away. This is where we Ult. Cut his escape short, Knock him up, rinse and repeat your rotation.

Jungle Aatrox:

He's fast and He's mean, honestly I wouldn't fight him alone. If you catch him out early by Scuttlecrabs early on, unless you know you'll get help from one of your laners. Same as the top lane Aatrox, avoid anything you can. Slow him, and hold your ult for when he tries to run away. Again, Mind that passive. Killing him once is tough enough, twice is just a royal pain.

VS

Ahri

Easy

I'm going to say Ahri is an easy gank, assuming your mid-laner hasn't decided to give her a kills. MR is key if you're trying to handle her, I would Suggest Banshee's Veil, on the off chance you can use it to negate her charms.

Pre-Six, just wait for her to push, I prefer to get her right after smiting the Raptors, gives you the Ward Detecting bonus to make sure your preferred bush isn't warded. If you can afford to wait, wait to see if she burns a spell or two, and hit her as they're cooling down. Q>W>E and repeat, with your slow, and mid lanes added damage, You'll either hurt her bad, get her flash, or come away with a kill. All three positive outcomes.

Post-Six, Same approach, if shes pushing toward your tower go smite raptors for the detection buff, Get into the bush, And when the opportunity comes, W, to have your autos ready when you get there, R>Q>E and watch her crumble.

VS

Akali

Easy

Akali, Top, Mid, and the diehard few who take her jungle, are three places you may see her. She benefits from AD and AP, so be sure to see which way shes going (Normally AP, so pack some MR)

Top:
Pre-Six wait for her to push. If she has lane frozen, or is near her tower do not attempt a gank, She'll spot you before you can get close, run away, and you'll catch a kama to the face for your troubles. But if shes pushing in it'll be a pretty easy gank. For starters, You'll want either Skirmishers, or a Pink ward handy. Q>Skirmishers Smite> W > E, She'll burn for the duration of skirmishers, while she is getting hammered by you and your top lane, should be a very easy kill.

Post Six: Prefer her to push, but if shes in the middle of the lane, that's now not so big a problem. If shes using her invisibility, wait for it to end and go in, IF she hasn't used it recently, Smite her with Skirmishers/Drop a pink ward as you engage. Usually  pop W>R>Smite>Q>E. If you don't blow her up, the top lane will finish her off.

Mid: Remember-Smiting Raptors gives you a ward detecting buff/Ability to spot invisible champs!

Pre-Six, Q>W>E, skirmishers smite/Pink ward helps negate her invisibility, and it should either get her flash, or atleast force her out of lane. Just take special note of your midlanes health and Akalis level. if she's been five a while, She could level upand nuke him with her ult. That's what we call a bad trade.

Post Six: W>R>E>Q Smite/Pink Wards if you don't have Raptor buff. Unless she's building or has built Rylais she'll really feel the pain from your gank, if you don't destroy her outright.

Jungle Akali: Rarely Seen, but still a thing.

Pre-Six if you catch her out early, Fight her. Q>W>E, Skirmishers smite if you have it to negate invisibility. Just watch your map, Her team may still have time to bail her out.

Post Six, Explode the ninja. W>R>Q>E, Skirmishers smite/Pink buff to negate invisibility. If shes still alive, You either sent her running for her nexus, or made her burn flash.

VS

Alistar

Easy

I mainly see Alistar top/supporting. Depending on his build your approach may vary.

Top: He'll normally build into either a tank or a bruiser, but I have seen AD Alistar work well.

Pre-Six, Do not engage him by his tower. He can knock you back into it, Stun you, and that's going to be all she wrote about that. If you can engage him in the middle of the lane, or closer to your tower. Q>W>E, and auto with your Top laner to try to bring the Bull down, Which if hes building Tanky, (Or getting AP for his E) can be difficult.

Post Six, DO NOT, Engage him by his tower, The knock back and stun is easy to land, and going to get you real dead. real fast. Same as the pre six gank, but watch for his ult, It increases his AD by a lot, and reduces any damage he takes by 70%. Save your ult if possible, it shouldn't be needed to kill him. But if it looks like he'll get away. Better to get gold now, than waste your time.

Bot Lane:

Pre-Six: Do not engage near tower. Hes going to peel you off his ADC, and that's okay. Just take whatever damage he does and clobber the ADC.

Post Six: Do not engage near tower, or when his team is MIA. That knock back can send you into towers, or the clutches of the enemy team. Again hes probably going to be peeling for his caries, so ignore him for the most part, but mind his ult/heal, he can be deceptively strong with those two.

VS

Amumu

Hard

Amumu can go either way, A tanky crybaby, or a tantrum throwing death dealer. Primarily see him in the jungle. At best, you can kill him early and minimize his impact late. At worst he'll get ahead with a few good ganks, and be a terror to kill, because unfortunately his CC is better, His AoE damage is better. and his engage with his ult is phenomenal.

Pre-Six is a battle of the tanks. I Would give this to Malphite based off his passive, should it boil down to a slugfest you should have enough to win. Just keep your eyes on the lanes, if it comes down to that, They should have plenty of time to come to the fight.

Post Six I wouldn't fight him alone. He can rope you, shower you in tears, and his ult will just about guarantee the kill. His passive is going to eat away at your MR, Meaning he's doing more and more damage the longer the fight goes on. IF you must engage him, Pack some extra MR, and bring a friend.

VS

Anivia

Hard

Don't you know? About the Bird? Well everybody knows that the bird is the word.

Anivia is a scary champ if played properly. Usually Mid, or support. I suggest multiple MR items if shes getting scary fed.

Pre-Six Mid, Unless shes pushing forward I wouldn't go for the gank. Flash Frost/Crystalize will give a good stun and a wall to separate you from her. standard rotation here and pray she doesn't freeze your rocks off.

Post Six Mid, Get MR. If shes pushing. Go ham. W>R>E>Q. Be sure your mid laner is there aswell. Worst case scenario, Anivia Will flash away, and place a wall between you. Proceed to take mid tower.

Bot Lane support

Pre-Six, Same as mid, but with less damage on Anivia, and more focus on keeping you away form her ADC.

Post-Six, A monster of peel. Slowing ice spells, walls everywhere, and her AoE will slow your movement and attack speed. Try not to fight in it, but if needed your ult can interrupt it.

VS

Annie

Medium

Annie. Depending on the player behind her, you will either run to her for the easy kill. or find yourself fleeing the 4ft nothing redhead of death, Keep your eyes peeled for the swirling pattern around her feet, if she has that, she has her stun up. Beware the tibbers stun.

Pre-Six

If shes pushing ward, a good gank mid is almost always gonna get you a kill. Q>W>E and repeat, she'll have to stun either you or the midlaner. She'll either getaway low, burn flash, or die. all positive outcomes.

Post-Six

BEWARE OF TIBBERS. Like, I cannot stress this enough. Yeah, by now you're a big. beefy. MR saturated rock monster. But this little girl and her bear are the stuff of nightmares. Watch for the swirls at her feet. Ward those bushes. That tibbers drop can delete some of the weaker characters. While her fireballs and the bear thoroughly trounce the others. When coming to mid lane, make sure she is pushed up. I would coordinate with the mid lane to time your ult with their attacks. Blow her up fast.

VS

Ashe

Easy

Now Sylvanas...I mean Windrunner...I mean Drow... I mean ASHE! Yes ASHE! That's her name. The lady with the bow of ice, more slows than a short bus, and that super arrow of an ult.Typically bot lane, Mostly ADC, haven't seen her support much anymore, but guess anything is still possible in the crazy mixed up meta we play. If she gets fed, you're going to get turned from rock monster, to pincushion for her arrows. Armor is suggested, if shes getting big, thornmail may help even the odds, just be sure to either avoid her ult, or eat it, if your squishies want to catch it with their face

Pre-Six-Gank

If shes and her support are pushing, and your laners aren't half dead. You have a 50-50 chance at getting her. If you're on blue side, come in from river, if you're on redside, come through blue tri bush just north of the tower. Be sure your laner knows your coming, and enjoy the gold.

Post Six Gank

Same as pre six, come in from one of either bushes. But now you have your ultimate to fly in and really initiate the team fight. Heck, I would say even if they're under tower, if you have enough health, and they are just low enough. Ping the dive. Be the hero. Or just wait until their smack in the middle of lane for an almost guaranteed kill.

VS

Azir

Medium

The Bird King Azir, I love this guy, but he can be a royal pain to play against. He has escapes, He has poke, and his disengage with his ult, will leave your whole team reeling. Now I've only ever seen him mid, because that's where this mage belongs. I recommend a good MR item or two, Perhaps a negatron cloak if your midlaner isn't building it.

Pre-Six Gank

Have to wait for this one to push, He can rush to his Soldiers for a quick escape, and we really want to avoid that. After hes pushed forward, coordinate with your mid. if they have a stun, have them drop it after you engage. Should be able to force his flash, or if hes just bad walk away with a kill.

Post-Six

Same as Pre-Six, but now with the little caveat that he can knock you, your midlaner, and just about the entire team away with a wall of shields. I recommend saving your ult for when he blows his, he'll try and run, but you can soar over the wall and bring down the Bird Man

VS

Bard

Medium

Bard-o! Is it just me, or does his face look like a bowling ball? Typically I see him Supporting, which is a great place for him. His Q could be a slow or a stun depending on your position, HE can drop shrines to heal his team, make portals for them to escape. And then his ult, that big ol' stun that hits errrrrvery thing in its radius.

Level One Gank Potential

Grab your botlane or your midlaner if they're feeling frisky. its a 50-50 shot, but I usually catch bards in the jungle gathering their chimes in the jungle near the 30-1:00 mark. Hes Squish enough if you catch him out you can blow him up and get back to your jungle with time to spare.

Pre-Six

This gank is less about bard, more about his ADC, Which bard is more than capable of keeping alive. Q Slows/Stuns if your near a wall. W, Heals his ADC if they walk over a shrine, so be sure to stomp those whenever possible. You can follow him on the magical journey through the portal, just be sure you have vision on the other lanes or itll be a short trip. Prefer to let the bot lane push, and try to keep them on the far wall away from river to prevent escaping. Q his adc, and try your very best to avoid getting stunned under tower.

Post Six

Even more capable at keeping his carry alive and safe. Now with his ult, he can put you, and anyone else slow enough to get caught in his ult in time out for 2.5 seconds. Which if the enemy has time to position. is gonna put you in a baaaad place. Just watch out for the telltale large golden circles on the ground.

VS

Brand

Medium

Brand, This guy is my favorite mid, Fire everywhere. If hes getting big, that fireball is going to hurt. I would suggest packing atleast two MR Items if he gets big.

Pre Six Gank

Pre Six, Brand is slow, and if hes playing agressive, hes pushing right up toyour mid tower. Pick you bush, If it aint warded, Let your mid lane your going in, naturally start with your Q to slow 'em, try to avoid his Q, and stay outof his W, if you're burning you'll take bonus damage. Usually you'll end up getting his flash, but if you're midlaner has the burst,or a stun. You'll get that sweet sweet Kill.

Post Six Gank

Post six, Brand gets a bit more deadly. He should have atleast one item by now, and his Ultimate. Ganks pretty standard, I say Ult in, Q, and unleash the hogs of war, just keep in mind if you dont burst him down, He can land a combo, stun you, burn you, and bounce that ult off you and your mid laner, possibly turning this gank into a death trap, ALternative gank is to roll in with your Q, and save your ult for after hes stunned you.

VS

Braum

Medium

Braum, I Love this guy. Big Sheild, Big moustche, Lots of thigns he does for his ADC, ((or for himself, Braum Top/ Jungle is thing...and it is scary.))

Pre-Six Gank

Whether Bot Mid or Jungle, Braums gonna build some tank, so your chances of killing him out right at this level by yourself is slim. Most likely he will not be pushing lane, either etting pushed in top, or letting his ADCdo the work down bot. His passive is a little troublesome, and his shield is highly annoying for ranged champs, but it wont stop you. He'll  try to peel for his ADC if possible, slowing you, leaping on them and using his shield to block incoming damage from that direction. Just hit 'em from one of the three other directions.

Post Six

Post six, his ult gives him some counter gank potential. Its a knock up, and a slow, avoid it if possible, I would suggest holding your ult for after his, if you're team has another engage. from there, naturally your target is anyone but Braum, Adc>Mid>Squishies > tanks/support ya dig? But if its down to just braum, standard rotation should wreq him!

VS

Caitlyn

Medium

Caitlyn, ADC with quite a lot of range. Shes going to hurt you, and a lot of the people around you. Armor is recommended, particularly the Thornmail if shes getting big and scary.

Pre-Six

Wait for her lane to push, depending on her supports warding habits you might come In unseen. Q her, and be ready to catch her E (The Giant net she fires out) or step on her W, (Traps, traps, traps) to give your ADC a chance to catch and kill her. I'd say have atleast a Ruby Crystal or a Cloth Armor before ganking her, just because of her ability to kite and damage she deals early.

Post Six

Again, Waiting for the push, or if you can catch her out. By now you should have some decent armor built up, or a large enough health pool to eat some of her Qs. Standard Rotation Q, W, E, chase her down, if she trys to flash away, or Es too far off, Drop your ult on her and smash the squishy. Word of advice if you see her scope lining up on a squishier opponent, step in her way, don't let her get the headshot off.

VS

Cassiopeia

Easy

Now very rarely do I play against Cassiopeia, anymore I think shes a bot game only champ. But, on the rare occasion you see he in game. She is quite annoying. Poisons, Slows, Damage out the wazoo, and her Stun/Slow of an ult makes her quit a dangerous Mid Laner.

Pre-Six

Shes not the fastest, and doesn't have much in terms of escape other than slowing you down and flashing away. I suggest waiting until shes atleast in the very middle of Midlane, with her poison cloud it wont be hard for her to push, Q her, and try to avoid as much of her poison as possible.

Post Six

After Level Six ganking her gets a little tricky, She does more damage, and her ult will stun you, if you are facing her. I would recommend Tenacity Items, Lower the effectiveness of her slows/stun. Again wait for her to push, when you see your chance Ult in on her. W in the bush, R onto her, E for the smash, Q for your own slow, and try to position yourself on the opposite side of her from your mid laner, insuring only one of you is stunned/slowed. You'll either destroy her. Or look cool trying.

VS

Cho'Gath

Easy

Cho'Gath! This little bundle of joy, Top, Mid, or Jungle, usually in one of two flavors, Tanky or AP. Hes got incredible poke, and wave clear thanks to his Q and E, the Silence from his W, and his ult, Feast takes a large chunk out of your backside. He's mostly AP damage, so some MR is recommended, especially if hes getting bigger than usual.

Pre-Six

In both Mid and Top, Cho is going to passively start pushing when he grabs his E. Your best chance to gank would be to let him push, get him either under your tower, or atleast across the half waypoint in lane. His best chance at escape is to knock you up with his Q or Ghost away. So if you get those. Call it a win. IF he tries to fight it out, early on you and your laner (So long as they are over half health) should be able to kill him.

Post Six

After he hits six, Cho gets a bit of a power spike, his ult lets him eat things and grow in size. Making him a much larger bundle of joy, literally, he grows in size, and gets passive health from eating things with his R. Same as before though, let him push. Q>W>E and hold your Ult unless its needed (IE he tries to escape and no one can catch him) With every successful kill, you'll cut his stacks in half, making life easier for everyone.

About the peregrinePaladin Back to Top

There's not a whole lot of updated guides out there for jungle Malphite, heck I hardly update this guide, and thats a shame because taking Malphite into the jungle is still a solid pick. This Rock Monster can dominate from between the lanes. His ult ganks are fun, his tank is second to none. And no matter who you're playing on the other side of the rift. Malphite is a safe pick. Enjoy the guide, leave a comment if you need clarification or see a mistake I made. Matchups are coming sometime in the future maybe.
