Summoner Spells Back to Top

4.png  - Flash is a primary summoner allowing you to move in and out of situations at a cost of an extended cooldown of 300 seconds.   I personally wouldn't leave champion select without it.

14.png - Ignite is an offensive summoner providing a set amount of extra damage and the ability to reduce enemy sustain over the duration. This is an option for the more offensive player who enjoys constant action with a cooldown of 210 seconds. It can be used to kill off low health targets, or do extra damage to a target while fighting. Recommended when laning against high sustain duelist or a high sustain team composition with priority targets. It doubles as a defensive spell like a deterrent against certain all-in champions. At least in conclusion ignite has greater impact for mid and late game, because i believe split pushing isn't always an option when you are the primary engager.

3.png - Exhaust cripples a championon a 210 second cooldown for 2.5 seconds. If used at the right time it will negate a large portion of possible damage to yourself or an ally. To malphite its a defensive spell against magic burst, or high dps. It can stop a full rotation of an all-in champion buying you time to escape. Has use over the entire course of the game albeit much harder to use than any of the summoners.  Malphite doesn't have the tools to make complete use of time frame on his own, so the spell becomes more supportive as the game progresses.

12.png - Teleport utility summoner spell that offers a player the freedom to move around the map at a cost of a large cooldown(300 seconds) and cast time(4 seconds). With the large costs in mind the spell subtlety forces the user to assume the responsibility of this knowledge, while rarely will you ever be criticized for incorrect or mistimed uses, the sentiment is still there. One thing for sure is you are most likely to get criticized for never using it at all. Worry not the sheer presence of teleport in a match will keep an enemy team on their toes especially if you're a Malphite. Level 6 malphite with teleport up? A bot lane combo somewhere is nervous. Teleport users bring a lot of power and control onto the rift and the only reasons anyone wont use the summoner is that they have a personal preference/ play-style, afraid and unsure, or simply do not know.
So learn when and where to use teleport, these little bits of insight and some simple team communication can make for easy game changing plays and potentially game carrying situations.  Additionally this knowledge feeds into other skills you have developed while playing league such as map awareness , team fighting and limits. It takes a bit of effort but you got this, I believe in you.

New Runes Back to Top

Page 1
Arcane Comet - Additional damage with a mostly guaranteed proc. The extra poke ended up being more useful than I had originally thought because it adds some early pressure to malphite who generally lacked some in previous patches.

Manaflow band - Mana sustain. Short and sweet
Ultimate hate - You could use this if you want. It doesnt help malphite's weak lane phase.

Transcendence - Cooldown reduction early, and additional AP/AD later. Also theres no better choice for a tank who relies on his cooldowns more than anything.

Scorch - Little bit of extra damage on top of arcane comet is helpful.
Gathering storm - I wouldn't recommend this one. Even if the match up is another tank and top is a farm lane.

Page 2
Grasp of the Undying - Welcome to battlephite. You want to use when ever possible and rush a sunfire cape.

Unflinching - Tenacity because malphite doesnt have any traditional escapes or gap closers extra tenacity will help against getting kited.

Conditioning - % bonus armor / magic resistance. No comparison

Second wind - Just a personal favorite for constant healing during trades on top of Grasp's healing.
Overgrowth - A suitable option in a match up against other tanks this will help you scale your HP.

Malphite Skills

Malphite skills are very simple, each has purpose which support him as a whole. As if he was designed well.20.png(in before rework)

seismicshard.png Q - A single target damaging spell that slows the target and grants you movement speed equal to that amount for 4 seconds. Or as its define 'Stealing' movement speed. Important notes.
  • 60% AP scaling, 8 second cooldown at all levels.
  • Will always gain movement speed equal the the amount that should be stolen even if the slow doesnt land.
  • The skill is considered a projectile. It can be blocked.
  • Applies Rylais' slow debuff
obduracy.png W - Passively grants bonus armor by rank 10~30%. On activation for 6 seconds basic attacks deal bonus damage with an aoe effect.
  • The activation has a 10% ap scaling and 15% armor scaling. 12 second cooldown at all ranks.
  • The splash damage can be amplified by crit damage.
landslide.png E - Casts at location dealing aoe damage and slows enemy attack speed 30~50% by rank for 3 seconds.
  • 40% armor scaling, 20% Ap scaling. Cooldown 7 seconds at all ranks.
ufslash.png R - Target Dash to location and knocks up all champions hit for 1.5 seconds after dealing magic damage. During the spell malphite is immune to crowd control.
  • 100% Ap scaling, 130/115/100 cooldown.
  • Malphite will travel faster with more bonus movespeed as an additive value.
  • Malphite can still take damage while traveling.
malphitepassive.png Passive - Shield for 10% of max hp that refreshes when out of combat for 10/8/6 seconds. With Additional armor when active.

Maxing Ground Slam

Ground slam is your primary waveclear and trade tool against melee champions. Highly recommend maxing first as it becomes a aoe damage source during post lane phase fighting. It helps cripple and nuke carries and bruisers, because the cripple threat is huge your presence alone can zone a group. Its low cooldown allows you to be liberal with casting it but beware mana costs early game.

Maxing Brutal Strikes

Generally maxed second or last while it does offer a large armor bonus and the bonus damage scales in rank. It its auto attack based meaning not entirely useful is some match ups. The bonus armor and basic attack damage is very effective against many melee match ups. You can use this to help you farm minions early.

Maxing Seismic Shard

Seismic Shard is a single target damage spell which has a debuff buff. Its useful in ALL ranged match ups and some melee ones. Mostly the match ups that require you to never engage alone. This spell also helps you escape and apply poking pressure in lane. Definitively worth maxing first or second depending on situation.

The Item Builds

These selections are purely reactionary with the exception of iceborn gauntlet. Lets take a look at them starting from the top.

2033.png All around amazing starting item. Provides the sustain you require in the early lane phase and pushing into mid game. The damage over time for activating the potion is a bonus.

1056.png Its for the AP start, gives you mana back per minion and a little extra health + AP

1054.png A clean option against single target lanes or low auto damage champions. Damage reduction is calculated before resistances.

1029.png For the more abusive AD lane where the extra armor and health potions help you survive till first back.

3024.png An amazing first buy against AD lanes. Bonus armor, mana and cooldown reduction gives you a little freedom to trade and farm efficiently. Leads into a iceborn gauntlet your first offensive purchase.

3751.png Second option against any lane type. The passive damage alone isnt very effective until upgraded but its is a nice early health boost.  Leads to one major defensive purchase.

3025.png Iceborn supports your entire kit extremely well it provides many crucial stats for a very low price of 2700. Its components being 1000 and 1050, each of which are useful on their own.  This item is a powerspike that increases farming and dueling speed. There are a few instances where I wouldnt buy it first, when im up against an AP lane or Ranged lane. In which case....
  • 3211.png Would by more suitable to buy first leading into a 3751.png - > 3068.png
  • Or in a Ranged lane you would have 1031.png + 3751.png for  a 3068.png
3068.png The Sunfire. A classic malphite first item choice providing enough health and armor to do things. The passive burning damage helps push the lane and duel any champion not strong enough to pierce your armor. In its own way it is an offensive buy as the longer an exchange occurs the more overall damage it does. For example you could Q and chase the target a little while to move into position to land E and W empowered attacks. During that frame you can get 2~3 procs off and 2 more before retreating to your original position.

The Counter Building.

From this point its all about counter itemization. Not just for you lane opponent but the entire enemy team. ALOT more clairvoyance than usual. You're level 6 to 9, you have to hit tab from base for a good 10 seconds on your way back to lane. Read how the gold distribution is playing out.
  • What is the gold distribution like?
  • Who has the most gold?
  • Who is the highest level?
  • Can you identify the biggest threat?
If the answer to any of these questions is you. Then theres nothing to worry about build whatever offensive tank items you want. If thats not the case and you have identified the biggest threats to you and your team you can now start planning your build path. You do this in 3 Steps
  1. Boots.
  2. Personal Defensive purchase.
  3. Counter Defensive purchase.
If you're thinking "The hell does that even mean chris?" You're right i made it up. There are a lot of useful defensive items and its hard to pick the right one without first organizing them. Whats for me? Whats for them?
And the hidden third category whats for the team?
You want to pick items based on who holds the threat values. 6 slots, 2 picks for each category, plus one extra from either counter defensive or personal defensive and the proper boots. In a game there are typically 3 major threats, the 3rd being the top laner which itemization doubles as another. For example yasou + ahri + vayne.  iceborn - abyssal - randuins - frozen heart - tabi - banshee. The extra item is picked based on how even the teams are or your personal preference. IF you feel like your team is ahead you can go ahead and pick another personal item like Sterk's Hydra or Deadman's. Anything more than 3 threats on the enemy team and itemizing gets goofy real quick. Sacrifices must be made and you will end up using the last slot to counter item that jungle or even support threat. 78.png1.png107.png9.png254.png

Boots

These are simple choices. Look at enemy team comp and determine which is the most annoying. The cc? 3111.png
The carries?3047.png The slows?3111.pngThe bitter poking and siege potential of a 42.png110.png51.pngand many more?
The goal is to boost your abilities to tank more, stick harder, chase faster or engage more often.

Personal Defensive

Items described here are items that provide a form of offensive utility.
3742.png3025.png3068.png3053.png3001.png3748.png3022.png
There is a required balance between defense and offense for the tank players. Luckily for malphite, these ideas are the same. However there is still the point to make, a tank without damage or zoning threat can be ignored making its presences in the game utterly worthless. These items provide both defensive stats as well as offensive utility or offensive stats. It will keep you a cause of concern after you have used your abilities.  So what vayne flashed your ultimate? Flash down and you can still auto her to death with a single offensive pick.

Counter Defensive

Items described here are items that provide mostly defensive utility, or offensive based on enemy activity.
3110.png3075.png3102.png3143.png3026.png3083.png3140.png
These are straight forward defensive items supporting raw resistance stats and effect that will impair the enemy or save yourself. These items alone make you very tank but without a pick from the personal section you can be ignored and peeled off later in the fight. At least it would take a season to kill you.

Team Items

The items here are designed to fit specific purposes. These items provide little to some defensive options.
3800.png3056.png3512.png3190.png3060.png3193.png
Other than Zz'rots portal having decent defensive stats and a useful active. There are not many reasons to pick any of these over the main items, but if you feel like the team is having trouble closing out the game getting one of these may be helpful. Either in creating more resistances for the team, pressure in other lanes, or tower diving.

VS

Aatrox

Easy

Aatrox is an attack speed based champion with strong early game mixed damage. In the early lane you must focus on not getting caught in an all in as aatroxW.png can be devastating early without a chunk of armor.  As you continue to dodge aatroxE.png and farm for first buy the lane becomes increasingly easier.

VS

Akali

Easy

Mix damage champions are tricky to build against in lane, however Akali is a squishy target thats prone to dying in ganks. When she harasses be sure to give some back. She cannot proc akalimota.png without auto attacking use that to your advantage by getting the minions on your side walk up to landslide.png if she doesnt attempt to proc it head back to your side. If she does activate obduracy.png before you get hit to punish her attack speed loss. First buy should be 3751.png3211.png to withstand some of the post 6 burst. The goal here is to prevent free farm, roaming and not die to akali. Sunfire and landslide.pngobduracy.png will damage her in akalismokebomb.png just in case you didnt buy a pink ward.

VS

Camille

Medium

You could probably abuse her shield because you are mixed damage rock. With that said landslide.png will likely save you from all ins as she is most likely to force fights against you. That attack speed slow however will not save you from camilleq.png raw second cast damage or camillee.pngcamillew.png burst. There is no way to avoid camillee.png other than being careful with your position.  camillew.png Dodging this is a matter of preemptively casting seismicshard.png and staying in the inner cone to attack with obduracy.png or staying out of the cone completely.

VS

Cho'Gath

Medium

This is a farm lane in favor for cho gath as he has infinite sustain in relation to your damage out put. Your goal here is to keep up in farm and focus on making it to mid game to make a bigger impact than he. You may have trouble farming if he is building with feralscream.png in mind, but if he is using vorpalspikes.png you can ground slam to reduce overall damage you may have otherwise taken.

VS

Darius

Medium
dariuscleave.png The trick here is never getting hit by decimate dariuscleave.png
Use seismicshard.png to put a little distance between yourselves  if you have to.  Otherwise bait out the Q and go in with a landslide.png to fight with obduracy.png. Ground slam wiill cripple his already low attack speed.
3025.png

VS

Dr. Mundo

Hard

You can try to play wave shove by spamming landslide.png since there is no beating mundo in a duel ever.  Its better to just focus on farming and making an impact else where. The other option is to bait for jungler ganks pre6. If you are struggling with cleavers build a little bit of magic resistance that should greatly decrease its damage.

VS

Ekko

Medium

Dont see ekko much anymore but its worth noting that even with reduced attack speed ekko still hurts.  So avoid ekkoQ.png to maximize any melee time you have exchanging with ekko. obduracy.png and landslide.pngIs super effective with containing his waveclear.

VS

Fiora

Medium

This is a general skill match up. Your success comes from being able to read fioraq.png  and punish her attempts to re position to proc her passive withlandslide.png and obduracy.png auto attacks, be wary of fiorariposte.png as it will reduce your attack speed greatly and it being riposte allows her to dodge a single move. Read it and make sure it is not Ground pound, otherwise the exchange is over and you most likely will lose that instance.  However 3047.png and another key armor component will ease rest of the lane.

VS

Gangplank

Medium

Gangplank general will have very little defense so busting him in duels is a viable options, however do not take a full cannonbarrage.png or get hit by too many raisemorale.png during the fights because as the game continues these skills will chunk you for more and more. Try not to fight him with his passive up as it causes problems for your shield and ability to trade back because hes faster.

VS

Garen

Medium

Garen can punish you easily in the early stage so maxing seismicshard.png to keep your distance maybe helpful if you are having trouble farming. After your major armor purchases garen till stop doing a lot damage to you and you should be able to trade back better and farm smoothly.  Try to hold on to seismicshard.png till after hes used garenslash3.png and never use skills on garen when garencommand.png is active. Garen's ultimate still does magic damage! Its bound to do way more than you think.

VS

Gnar

Medium
1054.png Start would be very helpful against gnar's low damage auto attacks. If you were to dodge gnarQ.png it is possible to toss seismicshard.png to get into position to punish him or bait him into usinggnarE.png. Mega Gnar is not an issue. You are prone to getting kited quite easily if you are not dodging correctly so be careful.

VS

Graves

Medium

This is a rough match up. Im not sure how dorans shield interacts with grave's auto attacks. Ask for jungle assisstance, by time you leave lane you should have enough gold to do things on the map. If anyhting max seismicshard.png that should be helpful.

VS

Hecarim

Easy

You steal movement speed and punish any of his harassment with landslide.pngobduracy.png3025.png or 3068.png are decent first purchases. you'll likely be able to kill him after getting some items you best option is to keep hecarim down and force him to TP to lane leaving you the option to gank bot undisturbed.

VS

Heimerdinger

Hard

Oppressive magic damage lane. Early jungle assistance or communicate with bot lane in attempt to abandon the lane with multiple TP ganks.3211.png you're free to use corruption potion to poke with seismicshard.png or use landslide.pngobduracy.png to quickly clear minion under turret.

VS

Illaoi

Medium

Illaoi is all physical and low attack speed. Its very easy to force a close range trade or secure a kill in a gank. Avoid free damage by dodging tentacles, until you finish a single item in which case only dodge illaoiQ.png and wall tentacles. Use illaoiE.png to force a fight because she wont do enough damage to the spirit with the attack speed debuff and you fighting her on it.

VS

Irelia

Easy

This match up is dependent on your ability to farm, completing a health and armor item before she finishes two components.3068.png will negate most pre triforce damage.  The ireliaequilibriumstrike.png is likely to come up after ground slam so instead save ground slam until ireliahitenstyle.png comes up. Bonus damage from obduracy.png is enough to outtrade her at this point.

VS

Jarvan IV

Easy

Do not take free damage as tank champion versus J4. jarvanivdragonstrike.png will shred your armor and his passive will shred a chunk of your hp. With more of items you have the less it will hurt and you'll be able to use your mix damage fight back a lot better. If you are getting ganked its OK to use your ultimate to escape jarvanivcataclysm.png

VS

Jax

Easy
landslide.png Cripples Jax completely and you're allowed to be more aggressive until he finishes 3124.png in which case take caution and use short trades to avoid fighting him while he has full stacks. Reminder jax does mix damage so having scaling magic resistance runes is well advised if you want to save gold in the lane phase.

VS

Jayce

Medium

Ranged match up with a tank busting skill. Start 1054.png and farm. Useseismicshard.png to trade back or harass. In the rare opportunity he messes up and knocks you into nothing with jayceE.png. Feel free to cast Q and give chase you might be able to pick up a kill if you're level 6. Especially if he just switched into hammer form after using a full missed cannon rotation.

VS

Kassadin

Easy

I dont expect you to see this one often but do note its does low magic damage early on in the game you can use seismicshard.png to build up speed obduracy.png to force a fight and landslide.png to output extra damage. Starting at level 6 he has extra mobility which changes the playstyle a little. You could grab a 3211.png let him come to you at that point.

VS

Kennen

Medium

Low damage auto attacks ranged with high mixed damage. Depending on his build you could use armor or magic resistance, eventually both. either way start 1054.png.  Use the minions to block kennenshurikenhurlmissile1.png. Having health per level runes here will make the match up easier to deal with.

VS

Kled

Medium

(working progress) Kled is mostly physical, however these kinds of cooldown based AD champions habitually build black cleaver so don't let your armor superiority cloud your judgement.  Kled is a very sticky champion with alot of damage output dueling him will be difficult for most of the lane phase( i suspect). I dodging kledQ.png and waiting for kledE.png to be used before you disengage. If you think thats the moment you want to trade back wait till near the end of kledW.png to use any of your skills because once hes in he cant leave and kledW.png has a heavy early cooldown. As a matter of fact always try to dish out some damage whenever kledW.png ends. I should probably stress this, dodge the kledQ.png its a low cooldown spell and does an insane amount damage.

VS

Lissandra

Hard
seismicshard.png Max this and try your best to dodge skill shots, unlike you lissandra get a lot of free skill casting so take your time to throw back some harassment. Focus on farming alot of magic resistance till improve your lane experience, along with those hp per level runes.

VS

Lulu

Easy

Ranged magic match up  dodge glitter lance and focus on farming. Once you have enough mana you can dodge the glitter lance and use seismicshard.png to close the gap to output some damage. Do not try for too long because lulu has alot of tools and a short cooldown you will get punished for over extending.

VS

Maokai

Easy

Theres no stopping the harassment theres only picking the place to fight. Read his movement and get ready to fight back. Hold on to seismicshard.png until he is trying to make a escape to lower the amount of sustain he could get in the middle of a fight.

VS

Nasus

Easy
obduracy.pnglandslide.png This is a farming lane and you dont have the raw power to bully nasus so its probably in your best interest to shove the lane and roam whenever possible. You can if you want rush a 3512.png  and drop it before you follow him in a teleport. It will either get you alot of gold or force someone to come top and shove the lane back your way. This way nasus loses farm.

VS

Nautilus

Medium

I've seen this match up before he has mix damage and alot of cc. Nautilus was generally use most of his skills before you can use yours, and then walk away with a big shield. So instead you will force trades in between cooldowns and farm.

VS

Olaf

Medium

Olaf is special, dodging axes its just as important as stopping his sustaining with landslide.png.

As the lane continues forward these tasks become harder. Making farming harder, because  olaf is prone to all in people and he can with olafragnarok.png.  You objective to to make a bigger impact late game so focus on farming.

VS

Ornn

Medium

ORNN is dangerous ornnw.png does high amounts of magic damage and is a on demand shield. Dont expect to kill ornn by youself. That being said seismicshard.png him when he ornnw.png  to get out of aoe, or seismicshard.png after to get some damage out. Disengage whenever you are brittle. Your mid to late game is stronger and will likely win if you rotate and make plays faster than Ornn.

VS

Pantheon

Easy

Pantheon has alot of poke and will build alot of AD. You build armor and hp and force duels against him. Until he builds penetration his damage is a non factor to you unless you are taking it for free over time.

VS

Poppy

Medium

New poppy is a little harder to play against as she has innate resistances avoid getting into situations where you could be pinned into a wall or knocked away from your team. poppydevastatingblow.png does damage based on your max hp but its physical so 3025.png will work fine.

The introduction of courage of the colossus has changed how the poppy lane works, she is prone to violence as that shield does a good barrier allowing her to initiate trades leave for free.

VS

Renekton

Easy

Renekton is a huge bully in lane, for you that lasts until your first back. Grab 1031.png  early and 3025.png later and the lane is no problem. The tricky part is having him stay in one place long enough to use skills effectively. You can move lateral of his slice direction so either he dashes back, move towards you, or has to dash towards you.

VS

Rengar

Easy

Farm away from the bush until first armor purchase then use his creeping methods against him to harass. 3025.png What that ferocity bar early. Rengar can kill most champion with a ferocity Q bonus before first buys we really dont want to give rengar a lead.

VS

Riven

Medium

She can kill and snowball easily before your first buy so playing this lane takes a little patience and accurate farming. After getting some armor and cdr you should be able to fight back and turn the lane pressure around. Maxing W and  having the proper set of runes will make this lane an easy rating.

VS

Rumble

Hard

Magic damage bully, has melee range and its easy to set up for a gank. Try to read the flame spitting aggression and use seismicshard.png to avoid it if needed. Heavy magic resistance and health is recommend. If you should ever choose to fight rumble do it when his overheat is about to expire.

VS

Ryze

Medium
overload.png is now a skill shot use the minions to your advantage to avoid getting poked and stacked on. Watch for the stack counter and use seismicshard.png to create alot of distance, if you time it right you may be able to head back in and use landslide.png to create some damage output.

VS

Shen

Easy

Its an even lane for a long time until you both have the same items. At that point shen uses his better hp scaling kit to out sustain you in fights. Its still a long pointless duel and goofy to watch. You best bet is to shove the lane and force him to struggle under tower.

VS

Shyvana

Medium

Shyvana is a mixed damage melee bruiser with multiple sources of dps and innate resistance values.shyvanafireball.png does HP max damage, shyvanaimmolationaura.png does magic damage per second, shyvanadoubleattack.png is physical burst.  This is not a losing match up, but you have to be careful not to caught in a combo or pushing too far past your turret.

VS

Singed

Medium

This match up is annoying to play against your best bet is to hope singed isnt very aggressive in which case you may need 3211.png3751.png. However if he is the kind to proxy then rushing any time to help clear minion waves would be beneficial. Let your jungle know that you have your teleport ready to go heal another lane, or if ignite is up.

VS

Sion

Easy

Easy farming lane things to note are the armor reduction of enrage.png, the  shield deathscaressfull.png max hp damage, and the high base damage of crypticgaze.png. If you dodge 2 of the moves you can use a full rotation to punish. Sion is at his weakest early game with low base HP, abuse this if you can.

VS

Swain

Hard

Ranged Mage. Theres no way you are getting out of this match up unscathed. Farm patiently and avoid swainshadowgrasp.png. Potions and 3211.png will allow you to tank swaintorment.png for extended periods so you can spend more time farming. Do not get too hooked up about building magic resistance as swaintorment.png also amplifies auto attack damage.

VS

Tahm Kench

Medium

Mix damage tank leaning heavily on the magic damage side. Hes capable of dealing alot of Max hp damage so getting early magic resistance will be extremely helpful. Dodge tahmkenchQ.png at all cost since tahmkenchE.png allows him to harass malphite nearly for free.

VS

Teemo

Medium

Avoid getting harassed(you cant stop it) , ask for jungler assistance pre-6 as teemo is a very easy kill at all stages of the lane. If you can get ahead you can use seismicshard.png to get him low before using ufslash.png to kill. Mana and CDR will be helpful, along with some minor magic resistance.

VS

Trundle

Medium
trundleR.png Makes trundle impossible to kill when you're fighting him in a 1v1. Otherwise with 3025.png you can best him in most trades.  Be mindful that chomp will lower your attack damage significantly so sheen procs are viral. Also try not to fight him in his frozen domain.

VS

Tryndamere

Easy

Stay safe early game as your HP and armor wont allow you to survive many crits or early tryndamere cheese. After your first armor purchase you can start using landslide.png to force trades. It may be helpful to know you can use brutal strike on nearby minons to harass him as he builds up fury.

VS

Urgot

Easy
urgotq.pngurgotw.pngurgote.png DANGER? Not really seismicshard.png and you are always out of the way of anything he can do. Do avoid urgotq.png so you dont take free damage. Urgots dueling power is stronger than yours so dont bother fighting him in the mid game, just go about doing malphite things like winning games.

VS

Yasuo

Medium

Stand over yasou and use your skills landslide.pngobduracy.png hes very weak early game. After your first buy you can harass all you want. Note yasuoW.png will block your Q, and you should stop fighting and retreat if he uses his ultimate yasuoR.png.

VS

Yorick

Medium

Melee Champion with casting harass. This lane can be annoying but its not a problem just farm normally and you will eventually out scale and out perform yorick. Little magic resistance needed asyorickr.png ghost dose magic damage for max hp. Its also wise to note respect the ghouls and dodge yoricke.png. Use obduracy.pnglandslide.png to clear zombies as necessary do not let them over run you as they do hurt alot as the lane progresses.

VS

Zac

Easy

Mix Damage tank leaning heavily on the magic damage side. Getting a little bit of magic resistance will negate a lot of the damage. However it is possible to have a lane without ever killing zac. He has a strong escape and is just as tank as you at this stage. If you can confirm a kill you're free to catch im when he lands  or interrupt it.

VS

Zed

Easy

Melee Assassin with both Ranged and at location casting. Zed will most likely harass you early game which you can respond by dodging zedQ.png and using landslide.png  on him. After your first armor purchase you can do whatever you want to him. Just dont get caught.

Quick Note Back to Top

The game is faster now, you're going to have to respect that. Use teleport early in lane to buy early and have teleport up around level 6/7 to make a play bot. Just bully the enemy bot lane. Like this we dont have to be too concerned about match ups and playing the lane to win. Of course this doesnt mean we'e allowed to lose it, there are going to be some rough match ups against bullies and ranged champions but hopefully the jungler will help. Junglers do alot of damage now and malphite has great gang support, try your best to communicate if the lane is too difficult.

Introduction Back to Top

The Unstoppable Playmaker

Malphite is a top laner and jungler specializing at building armor resistances benefiting offensively for it. A true tank in the sense he is capable of starting a fight and staying in it. If you enjoy winning games being the initiating leader, or the immovable object; Malphite is extremely well-suited for you.

Malphite's skill kit is designed so that every skill offers the utility to reinforce his presented archetype. Making everything easy to understand and use.

Pros

  • Super Tank. Easily Attainable 300 + armor with enough item room for a large chunk of magic resistance.
  • All skills offer valuable utility and are not just nukes.
  • Some skills scale with increasing armor.
  • Has a very useful passive shield.
  • Item building liberties, you can go AP if you assuming a different yet viable role and play-style.
  • It feels really good pulling off big Unstoppable Force plays.

Cons

  • Alot of the match ups in lane can be very challenging at first.
  • Passive shield cooldown lowers by level.
  • A bad unstoppable force can cost your team the game.
  • Team compositions with goofy mixes of damage will make itemizing effectively difficult.
  • There is a small teammate communication requirement.
Malphite is overall a great champion and is especially strong when AD carries are at their best.

Early and Middle Game Back to Top

The Struggle

Im not going to lie the early game is quite the challenge where you have focus on farming as much as possible up until your first item purchase. At that point you can start playing like a normal top laner, taking trades and using any opportunity you can to get yourself ahead of your opponent. The key to surviving here its knowing your opponent and understanding your weaknesses.

In the low levels you have a passive that grants a shield off 10% of your max HP the shield regenerates every 10/8/6 seconds after not receiving damage. Thats a very long time to be waiting in between action but thats just long enough to get a good potion in. You're allowed to use your skills to farm at this stage you can pop W under tower to help CS. Use Q to grab a minion far away, or use E to kill two minions about to die. You only need to be wary of your surroundings. The biggest mistakes in this phase of the game is by giving the opponent a large lead by dying to them.

I understand ganks happen and its unfortunate. Its at this time you have to stay calm and focus on your objective. The single item power spike. Single best advice at times like these is to keep your area clean with wards. Drop a pink inside your own safe tri-bush or side bush as that will secure your area and prevent any surprise tower dives.

 Power Spike

You're now level 9, a single maxed out skill and a shiny new set of items.  You can fight back your lane opponent and constantly send them back to base you're strong enough to go do things on the map with ease. So you're going to go do those things. You can set up a slow push and ping out an objective on the map, it could be a tower, a dragon, the rift herald, or fragile creatures of bot lane. If your teammates are within range to follow up on your ultimate do not hesitate to just GO. If your team isn't horribly behind that ultimate will result as kills or objectives. After that depending on your item and rune choices you have 130 to 78 second to farm until you do it again. This right here, is carrying solo queue. You may want to upgrade your trinket at this time to gain proper control of the map.

Late Game Back to Top

The Final Charge

Alright time has passed and things get a little more complicated. While nobody can actually kill you alone, a full team of 5 decently gear carries plus an annoying support 267.png would most likely kill you. You know when you're there when last whispers are completed, and  voidstaves are made.  So slow down and review the situation, gather up with your team and seek victory.

Unless its for a carry thats super out of position you dont want to use your ultimate for catches. You want to be able to use it on as many important targets at once and still be in position to double back and protect your carries if needed. If its not needed you can proceed to lay waste to their entire back line zoning them out of the fight. Everyone needs to be on the same page though. Let your team know you are ready to go and you are going to do it at the first best chance. You may want to communicate with your support and mid lane because they most likely have these 3092.png which makes the whole process very easy.

About Me Back to Top

Im Chris, or Chrisvonchaos. Even Dr Von Diddles at one point. I started playing league of legends in the beginning of season 2, i played mostly causal normal games with my friends because I was extremely afraid of Solo Queue. Then Season end rewards were announced and I really wanted them. By that time to my surprise I had practice enough in normal games to have easily acquired 1550 ELO for gold. Playing majority solo top, I made it to platinum Season 3, and Diamond season 4. I never climbed higher after being contempt with my rank.  Thats been the theme forever because i have school and stuff to do, get the rank i want and be done. Again the last season i stopped playing once i reached diamond under some 60 wins. Ive learned alot from the beginning, here are some bits of the lessons I wish to share.

  • Always be level headed. You will always be able to analyze a situation better with a clear thoughts. Anger, sadness, depression,  and self loathing. You don't need it, and it shouldn't be in this environment. Complaining in all chat that bot lane is feeding, or the jungler called you something mean; they don't care. I get ranked is a stressful environment and normal games can become stressful, if something makes you upset take all that negative energy and apply it to learning your opponents.
  • In Solo queue, everyone is playing their own game essentially. Yes its a team game and you have to rely on them to play as team, but that's not what's really happening. Everyone is playing their own games and sometimes our tasks align to create magic. Its truly a sad story but this is the reality of the game i believe exists.
  • In solo queue, even in real life. If you are not in the position of authority; don't order people around. They really don't like it, and they really don't care. You can however make suggestions. If its a good idea everyone can agree on.
Good luck out there!

Change Log Back to Top

Season 8 Soon
12/19/2017 Happy holidays, finally out of school and stuff to update this guide. Sunfire buff and thornmail changes make those two items essentially best in slot.

6/12/2017 Hello, thronmail changes, more defense and team utility less damage reflected overall. You're malphie though with 300 armor the reflected damage will still be significant, so i bumped it to core.

5/2/2017 MIDSEASON WE'RE BACK. THE TANKIEST CC ROCK IS BACK TO PLAY HARDER THAN EVER. What is this item3193.png?! WHOS IDEA WAS THIS?! 3001.png more hp and still does the thing it was supposed to do? I'll take it. 3194.png Rumble/AP counter picks? No problem. Tank update overloarded with things that make malphite truly unstoppable and the best part is he wont likely get banned yet, not until 10 ban system at least.

1/18/2017 happy season 7, alot of changes in the jungle have made rock life a little more challenging, im not a big fan of being a level 5 rock and enemy jungle has as much xp as i do and even more gold. Major key difference is i havent done a second back so im basically an item down on the junglers. Really salty. That being said super beef malphite is still unkillable so mid to late game is all you.

12/6/2016 Happy holidays and happy ranking. Preseason didnt bring a lot of changes to malphite as a whole, whatever changes there was were positive. Malphite will be a solid pick for some time.

8/12/2016 - Yo, add kled match up and fixed some to match meta changes.

5/5/2016 - We have a problem. Alot of mage updates and magic resist reduction on some MR items. They added devourers effect onto rage blade so Kog maw and vayne are huge problems.

4/12/2016 - No significant changes, just an edit to mastery displayed and an item choice. Malphite still a relatively strong and useful top laner.

2/10/2016 - Some reduced prices on armor items making frozen heart and randuins slightly cheaper. Nerf to deadman's plate, not extreme just worth noting.  Dragon changes will affect your priorities slightly when roaming as they will improve your playmaking ability immensely.

2/25/2015 - WWWWHHHHHHHHHHHHHY?! well i know why it makes sense that we got nerfed abit. This makes things a little harder and in some cases you may want to just max W first since that would likely be the better lane phase trading alternative. Otherwise the nerfs do not affect the point of playing malphite.
