As you might expect Exhaust Flash is a tough package to beat.

Flash being the instant positioning change is so strong that not taking it is basically conceding 2 or so deaths from that decision alone.

Exhaust helps in so many cases to mitigate slow attack speed of opposing adc, slow fleeing opponents, and in general prevent assassinations.

The only conceivable alternative would be to swap out 3.png for 14.png in particularly easy lanes to hopefully get ahead earlier.

Now we come to the most unfortunate reason why support malphy has a hard time bot. There really isn't a great keystone for him to exploit.

Bond of stone would be ideal like most support tanks, were it not for it resetting his passive every time the adc gets hit.

That leaves a couple of choices:

  1. Strength of Ages when using relic shield lets you get a free 300 health over the course of the game
  2. Windspeaker's can be made to work though it is a little strange so let me explain


Beyond the selfish reason that windspeaker's increases your passive shield, you can use relic shield heal to proc windspeaker's in lane. The heal it gives will be that bit stronger and grant resistances.

As well  40?cb=20130319090622 , 40?cb=20131117020510, 40?cb=20130710101718 all get their effects improved on by windspeaker's. Also interestingly the crucible also helps improve upon your own shield from your passive: that along with the bonus from windspeaker's and runic armor make it relevant even lategame.

The basic Idea behind malphy support is simple.
Q harras to gain lane dominance. Using the movement speed it steals along with your shield off your passive to keep them from doing significant damage to you in turn.

Once you get 6 the REQ combo will do around 350 damage. Thus if you have an agreeable carry even superficial poke can be enough to get a kill.

When team fights roll around you either act as a bodyguard or initiator just like every support tank.
In cases where you are initiating be sure to land the attack speed shred on your E on all or most of the relevant champions. Aside from the ADCs this includes: 268.png10.png11.png17.png23.png24.png39.png77.png even 4.png throws gold cards laughably slow when you slow his attack speed by 50%.

It might seem crazy to take faerie charm instead of potions. But if there is a support that can get away with it without loosing crazy lane presence it would be malphy.

Thanks to his passive he can harass effectively with his Q and get out before any significant damage is dealt in turn. Thus in lanes that won't force an extended fight to occur a faerie charm helps you spam out more Qs and helps build towards your future crucible.

Beyond that we take the standard set of items for a support tank.

Targon's rush to get more gold and proc windspeaker's more consistently
Boots when the gold allows it
Sightstone and swap to red trinket to get map control
Locket to mass proc windspeaker's bonus resistances in fights
Face of the mountain to be even more annoying
Crucible to make the shields even stronger and deny any engage on critical targets
And lastly an item of your choice to help fill in your weaknesses

zekes to help close out games
warmogs if you're against lot of mixed damage
banshees to stop magic damage
randuins to mitigate crits and physical damage sources
and dead man's plate if physical damage is a problem but crits aren't

Easy

Alister has little to help combat your annoying Q harass outside of spamming E to heal off the damage. However your Qs do way more then his E heals. You should come out on top.
If Alister instead goes all in you should focus on doing more damage to their carry.

Bard

Easy

Bard passive autos hurt but you passive can take it. Just Q whoever is closer and then back off. His healing shrines will make getting kills through harass tough but it should give you lane dominance and thus their tower.

Blitzcrank

Easy

Just don't get hooked.
When blitz uses W to get that sick hook position just steal the movement speed with your Q and laugh as you run circles around him.

Janna

Hard

If she uses shields to block your Q harass this lane is quite dull. And thanks to her ult your own initiation can backfire so get to 6 and roam around to try make use of it elsewhere.

Karma

Medium

If she uses shields to block your Qs it is going to be very sad laning. But once you get 6 there is serious chance of getting a kill off one of them.

Leona

Medium

This is a lane you will need the potions in. But leona does only go in. So use this to your advantage and harass her carry to no end. Alternatively you can try roaming after 6 to make plays around the map.

Lulu

Hard

Second hardest lane; the poke from her autoattacks and Q is more significant then your passive can handle and her shields can negate your harass. Once 6 her ult can handily prevent kills, so try to roam around to make plays elsewhere because this lane is not gonna be giving them up easily.

Nami

Medium

Nami while she can heal off your harass has much more crippling mana costs on her heal than you have on your Q. Simply attrition her mana bar and wait for level 6 to all in to snag some sushi.

Nautilus

Medium

Nautilus really only wants to make you stay still forever. However he can't heal or shield his carry. You should be able to harass the ADC and so long as you avoid getting engaged on should get the lane dominance to start getting ahead.

Sona

Hard

Simply don't. The heal and shield make getting damage to stick impossible. Best bet is to wait till 6 when you can all in sona if you and your carry haven't fallen too far behind.

Soraka

Medium

A real do nothing lane. Soraka has no CC and thus can't really apply any pressure to you. However neither can you put pressure on her since she will heal it back up. Once you are 6 though there is real potential for kills if you and your carry haven't fallen too far behind.

Tahm Kench

Easy

Absolutely easy lane.
Q his carry, and dance around him with his slow movement speed. Getting kills might be hard but you should be able to get lane dominance and thus the tower.

Taric

Easy

Taric having both a heal and a shield makes trading near pointless. The damage won't stick, but you might still be able to get lane dominance to get the tower.

Zyra

Hard

Really annoying in lane, and always risky to dive even after 6. Be careful and note what skill she uses to dive her proper when her skills are on cooldown.

So is support malphy good?... Well kinda, Certainly as far a bully support tanks go Nautilus is a better option most times. However if like me you just rank up to gold for the rewards and stop, and nautilus is getting dull for you, or just isn't your kind of thing you may find malphy a great alternative. And hey even in ranked when the champ select gods smile on you there might be a good opportunity to play it.

And hey it always makes me smile when someone counter picks malphy and then gets wrecked by someone else.
