Summoner Spells Back to Top

You want to be running 4.png14.png against teamcomps with little to no dive-threat and 4.png3.png against teamcomps with heavy divethreats (such as 157.png59.png,114.png etc.) or vs. a low kill pressure bot (like if you're playing 90.png+81.png vs. 40.png+51.png).

Basically ignite for early kill pressure and if you don't need exhaust lategame, and exhaust if you don't have a lot of all-in potential earlygame and need it for the later stages of the game.

New Runes Back to Top

Summon Aery lets you have a lot of pressure throughout the game through your malzahare.png constantly being on targets together with your Voidlings. Manaflow Band is the best option as you have high manacosts with high CD, letting you get a lot of free mana sustain throughout the game. I like to run Absolute Focus due to Malzahar being high HP% most of the game due to his passive and style of play, but Celerity is also a viable option. Scorch is simply the best out of the last rune slot due to its insane poke.

I like to put my last 2 points in Inspiration for Hextech Flashtraption and Magical Footwear. Hextech Flash might seem like a weird option, but as Malzahar support your job is more often than not to act as an engage tool for your team. Getting vision control over one part of the map and camping with Hextech Flash over walls is a REALLY easy way to get free picks for your team in soloQ. Try it and if you don't like it you can swap it for Biscuit Delivery for more sustain. Magical Footwear is really nice for some extra movement speed and lets you focus on more damage earlygame before you get your first boots at 10min.

Masteries Back to Top

Running Deathfire Touch instead of Thunderlords is a debated topic on Malzahar support, but honestly Thunderlords is just too much free damage to give up.

The hybrid penetration offered by the Cunning tree is also very nice for your voidling damage, which is a big part of your overall damage as Malzahar.

The remaining 12 points should always go in the Resolve tree due to the Insight  mastery. Having a 15% lower cooldown on Flash is extremely important to Malzahar in midgame, where flash-ults are the easiest way for you to create picks with your team to snowball the game in your favour.

This is the standard skill-up pattern for 90.png Support.

Your W is your primary source of damage as you don't have the gold in the earlier parts of the game as a support to afford a lot of AP which boosts your malzaharq.png and malzahare.png damage. The flat increase of damage per voidling attack makes malzaharw.png most lucrative to max first, however this is not always the case.

If the enemy botlane has a composition that can easily kill your voidlings quick without them being able to multiply beforehand (such as a 432.png just double-stunning your two Voidlings every time you use them, or a 412.png that can Flay them away from their primary target to avoid multiplying before they die) it can be smart to put a few points into your malzaharq.png for extra harrass in the earlygame.

Putting 2-3 points in your Q depending on how much you need the extra point can help assure you a stronger earlygame as your Voidlings can be useless in the early parts of the game if your opponents know what to do to counter them.

Against hard-counters to Malzahar support such as 21.pngand 117.png you want to max your malzaharq.png first before your malzaharw.png. This is due to their ability to kill your Voidlings almost instantaneously with MF's Love Tap and Lulu's enhanced autoattacks.

Core Items

    Early core items

Situational Items

    Late game full build example

On Malzahar support you want to get your 3158.png3098.png and 2049.png as soon as possible. After finishing your 2301.png you have to choose depending on enemy composition what your next item is going to be; either a 3151.png or a 3116.png.

If the enemy has heavy frontline that's building a lot of HP (currently very common to see 78.png12.png and 421.png for example) then you want to build 3151.png as your first core item to shred them down with %HP damage.

If you need the extra CC to chase or lock down targets, you want to get 3116.png as your first core item.

3151.png is always going to be more damage than 3116.png so unless you need the extra slows you should really be picking up 3151.png. The flat magic penetration from 3136.png makes it extremely strong against squishies (such as 126.png203.png and 40.png ).

After you have both of them built (the first one depending on the situation mentioned above) you want to build a 3165.png to reach the 40% CDR cap and get your ultimate on a 48s CD in the lategame. To finish off your build you want to get a 3135.png to maximize your damage output in lategame.

VS

Blitzcrank

Easy

Much like Thresh, this is one of your easier matchups. Blitzcrank is successful as a pick due to his pick-potential and aggressive plays in lane, both of which Malzahar counter extremely hard with his passive and malzaharw.pngs. In lane this is really easy for you as Malzahar if your ADC doesn't get hooked 24/7, as he can never get close to you to powerfist.png or grab you without eating a voidling swarm. Try to use your malzaharw.png stacks wisely in this matchup and don't use them both instantly before he actually commits to a poor trade that you can turn with your voidlings' help. In mid/lategame you have an easy time getting picks on him/his team due to the safety of your passive. Look for counterengages with your malzaharr.png rather than engages, as you're in danger yourself if you start malzaharr.png someone and a Blitzcrank comes and cancels your ult with his rocketgrab.png from fog. Play it smart and relaxed and it's an easy matchup for you.

VS

Janna

Easy

This is one of the easiest matchups for Malzahar due to the fact that he has full control over the lane and push. Janna is a good pick if she has a pushing ADC, but if Malzahar has one as well then the lane with Malzahar can always control the lane and deny farm+ set up ganks way better than Janna. You want to focus on getting your 6 as soon as possible and look to roam; your ADC always has safe farm vs. a Janna lane so don't be scared to leave him for roams after level 6 if the lane is pushed. Only thing you need to be aware of is if Janna is starting to charge her tornado; wait until it's casted if you don't have your passive up so you don't get interrupted in your malzaharr.png

VS

Karma

Medium

Karma can be quite annoying to play against as Malzahar due to her having an easy time pushing lanes with low manacosts, whilst Malzahar has to waste a lot of mana if he wants to push the lane to assist his jungler/poke under tower. She can also disengage from your voidlings quite fast with her karmasolkimshield.png to make sure they don't multiply. What you have to do in this matchup is bait her to commit with her karmaspiritbind.png on you by slightly overextending, using your malzahare.png then using both your malzaharw.png charges to block her mantra karmaq.png and finish it off with a malzaharq.png as she's running away to refresh your E dot and make sure your malzaharw.png are running towards her at max speed with the 300% Damage buff that your malzahare.png gives your voidlings.

VS

Morgana

Medium

This matchup is easy/medium depending on how well you use your malzaharw.png to block her darkbindingmissile.pngs throughout the game. Other than that this matchup is pretty straightforward, once you unlock your malzaharr.png you have to be SUPER careful of not ulting someone that is blackshield.png by her, otherwise she will be much more useful than you. In lane you have dominance over the trades by being able to block her only form of trade setup (her darkbindingmissile.png) with your malzaharw.png. You also have superior poke with the voidling attacks themselves and your malzahare.png. In this matchup I would advice going 2-3 points in your malzahare.png before maxing your malzaharw.png as it's hard for your voidlings to attack Morgana if she is clever with her bindings and tormentedsoil.png to kill them off quickly. In mid/lategame you want to look for malzaharr.png when her blackshield.png is on CD or you know that you can get an ultimate off without her shielding them beforehand. Be careful to get baited in to ulting someone only to be darkbindingmissile.png'd by her from the fog and being tradekilled immediately however, be aware of your surroundings and respect vision.

VS

Nami

Hard

Any support that has sustain is not fun for Malzahar to play in lanephase. Since your poke is very short ranged (especially your malzahare.png), overextending against Nami can prove very dangerous as she/her ADC can proc your shield and just turn on you with a namie.png'd autoattack and namiq.png which leaves you at half HP. A lot like Zyra, you want to avoid getting behind in lane and look for roams/ganksetups with your jungler once you unlock your malzaharr.png. Against hard lanes with long range poke/sustain, this is the common trend with Malzahar support. Your malzaharr.png is the key and if you use it wisely you will pick up a lot of free kills with it. Why I put this matchup as hard however is because of the fact that she has 2 ways of stopping your malzaharr.png (her namiq.png and namir.png) if you use it on any other target than herself, and in mid-game if the Nami positions correctly it will be VERY hard to ult her.

VS

Thresh

Easy

The pick of Malzahar support originated by being used as a counter to Thresh a lot (mostly in KR). You, spell by spell, basically counter the fundamentals of Thresh which is heavy pick potential (blocked by your passive), aggressive playmaking (which is countered by your malzaharr.png) and solid dives (countered by your malzaharw.png and malzaharq.png). The only thing he has going for him was, as I mentioned before, his ability to flay away your malzaharw.png and kill them before they multiply. But if you're smart you don't use both your malzaharw.png charges at the same time and try to bait him in to using his threshe.png on only one voidling. Other than that you mostly have control over every single trade unless your passive is down and you're positioning poorly that allows him for a threshq.png. Even if you do get hooked however, you can always use 2 charges of your malzaharw.png as you're running away after he flays you, making him take insane damage if he follows up on the trade. In mid/lategame this matchup swings even heavier in your favour as your passive gets shorter CD and it's practically impossible for him to hook you or look for aggressive plays if you're around, leaving him wandering around like a budget Karma with his threshw.pngwondering why he picked Thresh.

VS

Zyra

Medium

This matchup would be listed hard if Zyra had a quick way to interrupt your malzaharr.png, but since her own zyrar.pnghas a delayed knockup and not an instant one, it's only at medium. This is probably one of the hardest matchups for you as a Malzahar support to play in lane. She outranges you, outpokes you and has more damage than you in most stages of the game. You want to survive the laningphase as well as possible and try to get your level 6 and unlock your malzaharr.png and start looking for roams/ganksetups with your jungler. You win against a Zyra by ONLY fighting with your ultimate up, otherwise you lose every trade against her. In midgame you want to start getting visioncontrol over the objectives that your team wants to grab next, and look for catches on her with your malzaharr.png. Since Zyra is extremely squishy this can get you a few free kills, which swings the momentum in your teams favour. In mid/lategame you have to be careful however as one zyrae.pngzyraq.pngzyraw.pngzyraw.pngzyrar.png combo from Zyra can kill you from 100% if you don't have your passive up. Play this matchup smart and only play around your ultimate and you have a decent time.

ADCs that synergize with Malzahar Back to Top

TIER 1: 202.png22.png110.png

These champions synergize really well with Malzahar due to their ability to followup his ult, or CC them before enabling Malzahar to follow up with his own ult. This makes the pick-potential of Malzahar even better and easier, due to the nature of these ADCs. If you can pick any of these champions with Malzahar support in your team, I would advice doing so and enjoy the LP.

Tier 2+rest: 81.png51.png222.png29.png67.png

These are the other 5 ADCs that have potential synergy with Malzahar support. Basically they lack the same kill-setup that the Tier1 ADCs do, but they all have good followup potential from Malzahar himself with a lot of damage.

Tips and tricks with Malzahar support Back to Top

Tip 1: Blocking skillshots with your malzaharw.png

This tip is extremely easy to perform and is one thing you constantly have to keep in mind playing against champions that have high-threat skillshots (such as 412.png's threshq.png). You can reactively put your malzaharw.png between yourself and the champion trying to hit you with their skillshot and let your Voidling tank it. This can also be done to block skillshots for teammates if they are out of position. Be careful of putting your voidling too close to yourself however, as the hook can "bend" around the voidling and hit you instead.

Tip 2: Not using both charges of W against champions that kill your malzaharw.png easily

As seen in this clip, it's extremely easy for champions such as 412.png to completely deny your Voidlings from multiplying if you use both charges at once. Thresh simply has to threshe.png them away and kite+kill them before they are able to multiply. This also applies to things such as Bards 432.png or Namis namiq.png, don't use both charges of your W unless you are sure they can multiply.

Ult target selection prioritizaiton Back to Top

Sometimes it can be tricky for people to know what target to use your malzaharr.png on throughout the game. There is no set "list" of people to prioritize with your ult as Malzahar, but this is a prioritization you can generally follow in every stage of the game.

You want to be able to ult their carries (mostly ADC+Mid) if that's a possibility without putting yourself in danger. If that's not possible you want to ult the 2nd threat targets (usually Jungle/Top). You also want to keep in mind any form of interruption that can cancel your ult instantly, and not put yourself in a spot where that can happen easily. Something you also have to take in to account is the threat of your teams' carries vs. the enemy teams' carries. Do you have an extremely fed 67.png and 69.png that can shred tanks easily? Then you're much better off ulting their frontline 2nd threat targets, such as a 78.png that's annoying your backline. Due to the %HP damage on Malzahars ultimate, you should not be scared to use your ult on their frontline in the mid/lategame (also because the enemy carries usually buy 3140.png which nullifies your ult). Overall you should be decisive and confident, but not overaggressive in terms of your positioning when you have your ultimate. Make sure your team is around for followup damage/cc so you don't waste it.
