Summoner Spells Back to Top

Summoner Spells

red_line.png

4.png Flash is the first Summoner Spell and I recommend always taking it when you're playing this champion. This is because Flash is the best Summoner Spell around. It is a really good and a reliable Summoner Spell. It can be used offensively, defensively and is honestly, a really good Spell to take.

12.png Teleport is the second Summoner Spell that you should take on Maokai. This Spell is really good because it can be used to get back to lane quicker and it can also be used to help your team. In the early game, you want to teleport back to lane after your first back. Then you should look for Teleport opportunities where you can help your team.

New Runes Back to Top

Runes

red_line.png

57.png Maokai is a very good champion and can take a range of different Runes. I recommend taking Resolve as your main Rune tree because it will give 57.png Maokai a range of defensive stats. Firstly you want to be taking Aftershock.png?width=32 Aftershock. You can take Grasp%20of%20the%20Undying.png?width=32 Grasp of the Undying if you wish. Aftershock.png?width=32Aftershock works well on him because of your maokaiw.png W and your maokair.png ultimate. This Rune focuses mainly on team fighting and trading. Taking Grasp%20of%20the%20Undying.png?width=32 Grasp is good for laning. Next, I recommend taking Demolish.png?width=32 Demolish as this will allow you to take towers quickly and will aid in splitpushing. You have some freedom with your next Rune. You can choose to take either Iron%20Skin.png?width=32 Iron Skin or Mirror%20Shell.png?width=32 Mirror Shell. If you're against an AD champion or a tank. Such as 114.png Fiora, 122.png Darius, 54.png Malphite or 58.png Renekton then you want to take Iron%20Skin.png?width=32 Iron Skin. If you're against an AP champion or a heavy AP team such as 50.png  Swain, 8.png Vladamir or 17.png Teemo then you want to take Mirror%20Shell.png?width=32 Mirror Shell. Because of your maokaipassive.png passive and overall healing capability- you want to take Revitalize.png?width=32 Revitalize last.

red_line.png

In your second tree, I recommend taking Sorcery. You want to be taking Manaflow%20Band.png?width=32 Manaflow Bond as this will give you increased mana regeneration and will periodically give you a free ability use. The next and final Rune is going to be Scorch.png?width=32 Scorch. This is a really good Rune because it deals extra damage to enemies. It will help you with trades like Grasp%20of%20the%20Undying.png?width=32 Grasp of the Undying.

Ability Rundown

red_line.png

Maokai's Passive is Sap Magic

a.png

His basic attacks periodically heal him. The cooldown of this passive can be decreased by every spell that 57.pngMaokai uses or gets hit by. 57.png Maokai is healed for health that increases on level and max health. This maokaipassive.png passive gives him a lot of healing throughout the game.

red_line.png

Maokai's Q is Bramble Smash

b.png
57.png Maokai smashes his fist into the ground, knocking back enemies and slowing them. All enemies that are hit get dealt damage.

dot-pattern.pngTips and Tricksdot-pattern.png
Your maokaiq.png Q is rather versatile and can be used in a magnitude of ways. You can use it to clear waves, push faster and deal damage to the enemies. If you are close to an enemy and use your maokaiq.png Q, they will be knocked backwards. If they are far away then they will just be slowed and dealt damage.

red_line.png

Maokai's W is Twisted Advance

c.png

57.png Maokai becomes invincible and dashes towards an enemy champion. Once arrived he will briefly root them.

dot-pattern.pngTips and Tricksdot-pattern.png
Your maokaiw.png W is very strong and be can used in a range of ways. You can use it to engage on enemy champions when you're receiving a gank. In team fights, you have two choices on who to use your maokaiw.png W on. The first option is the enemy frontline. You can be a secondary support and peel for your carries and protect them from the enemies who are trying to get onto them. The second option is to go in on the enemy carries. If you are going on the enemy carries, then be aware of how deep you're going and make sure that your team can follow up. You will be tanky but you will not be able to kill the enemy backline, especially if the enemy has a utility support that can peel for them like a 40.png Janna or 117.png Lulu.

red_line.png

Maokai's E is Sapling Toss

d.png
57.png Maokai throws a sapling into a selected area. maokaie.png Saplings will scout vision and chase any enemies that come near it. They will soon explode after coming into contact with them or reaching their maximum range. If it does hit an enemy, they will be dealt damage and slowed. maokaie.png Saplings last for up to 30 seconds.

dot-pattern.pngTips and Tricksdot-pattern.png
Your maokaie.png Saplings are incredibly strong especially when they have been placed in a bush. maokaie.png Saplings that are in bushes and deal extra damage to the enemy hit and nearby enemies. Your maokaie.png Saplings can be used as a barrier between you and the enemy, if they step near them they will explode and deal damage to them. You should use this to your advantage when warding by placing them in bushes and the river- if the enemy goes to ward or the enemy Jungler decides to gank, they will be in for a surprise and you will have time to escape.

red_line.png

Maokai's Ultimate is Nature's Graspe.png

57.png Maokai Summons a wall of thorns that advances foward rooting enemies that are hit by it. The duration of the root increases the furthur that the wall travels.

dot-pattern.png Tips and Tricksdot-pattern.png
Your maokair.png ultimate is very slow moving so keep that in mind when using it. The best way of using your maokair.png ultimate is to flank enemies. For example, if they are grouped in the middle lane, you should move off to the side and behind them- then use your maokair.png ultimate. This should root the majority of the enemy. You can also use your maokair.png ultimate in laning combo, as it will spring from slightly behind you- you can double CC enemies. An example combo would be maokaie.png E + maokaiw.png W + maokaiq.png Q + maokair.png R followed by Auto attacks.

red_line.png

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

I would recommend this item every time as Maokai. This is because it gives you sustain in the laning phase.
This is another good starting item for Maokai. It doesn't give you as much sustain, but does give extra damage!
Good start against heavy poke laners. I would recommend taking this against Champions who are ranged.

Core Items

This should be your first item in every game when you're against a Tank champion or AD Champion.
Your second item should be Boots. I recommend getting Mercury Treads or Ninja Tabi's.
Your third item is going to be Spirit Visage. If you were laning against an AP Champion- get this first.
Your next item should be Thornmail. This is especially good against heavy poke teams or enemies with multiple AD Champions.
Your next item should be Dead Mans Plate. This item will give you health and armor and is really strong in the current Meta- overall a really strong item.
For your final item, you can pick either Gargoyle Stoneplate or Adaptive Helm. Adaptive is good against champions like Rumble or Kata.

Situational Items

These items are good if you're against a heavy AP team, you may want to pick one of these up. Remember to get Magic Resist Booties!
These items are good if you're against a multi or full AD team. These should protect you well! Get one of these instead of MR. Remember armor boots!

Item Suggestions

red_line.png

In most matchups, you should be starting with 2033.png Corrupting Potion. If you're against an AP champion or somebody who has range, such as 133.png Quinn or 17.png Teemo then you want to take 1054.png Doran's Shield. If you want to win lane or have higher damage early, you can start 1056.png Doran's Ring and 2003.png 2 health pots.

red_line.png

Your first item for 57.png Moakai is going to be 3068.png Sunfire Cape. This item is really good as it gives you armor and health that will allow you to stay alive for longer throughout the laning phase and game. The item has a strong passive too, which will aid in pushing the lane and help splitpushing. However, If you're against a champion who is AP focused, such as 50.png Swain or 8.png Vladamir then you should get 3065.png Spirit Visage first and 3068.png Sunfire cape third.

Your next item is going to be boots and upgrading them. You want to get 3047.png Ninja Tabi if you're against a heavy AD team. Alternativly, you can get 3111.png Mercury Treads if you're against an AP champion. Your third item is going to be either 3068.png Sunfire Cape or 3065.png Spirit Visage. Your fourth item is going to be 3075.png Thornmail. This item is a really good item when you're against a heavy AD team comp. The fifth item is going to be 3742.png Dead Mans Plate. 3742.png Dead Mans Plate gives you armor and health. These stats will give you lot's of defensive points and will allow you to stay very healthy in team fights.

Your final item is going to be either 3193.png Gargoyle or 3194.png Adaptive Helm. 3193.png Gargoyle is a very in general because it gives you a range of defensive stats. It also has a good passive that can keep you alive for longer in team fights. If you didn't want 3193.png Gargoyle, you could go 3194.png Adaptive Helm next. 3194.png Adaptive Helm is good against champions who deal AOE or long lasting Ultimates such as 50.png Swain, 161.png Vel'koz, 68.png  Rumble or 55.png Katarina.

VS

Aatrox

Easy

Aatrox can be a hard matchup if the enemy is good, if not then it is a pretty simple matchup. When playing vs a aatrox, make sure you do not go for full trades near his tower or tower dive him with his passive up. Aatrox's abilities do not cost mana but can cost HP. He has huge sustain so ask for ganks early. After 6 he is strong with his insane damaging ultimate.

VS

Akali

Hard

Early game akali isn't great. After 6 she becomes really strong, especially when she has 3 stacks in her ultimate. I have rated akali as a hard matchup because she does insane damage with her Q-AA combo. In this situation i would ask for ganks, or wait until she has wasted a ability and then going for a trade.

VS

Camille

Hard

Beware of Camilles gap closes and ultimate as she can trap you in place. For this lane i would suggest trying to hold and freeze it near your tower, because she out rotates you, out roams and is overall a better champion than you because she is a fighter. early game she does alot of damage too so do not go for extended trades.

VS

Cho'Gath

Hard

Cho'gath lanes can be really difficult at times due to chogaths kit. He has double CC so you need to be aware of his cool downs and make sure that you can dodge his abilities. For this lane he will get stronger and stronger the more he farms so i suggest getting some help early. After he has used his W, you can go for combos and trades.

VS

Darius

Hard

Darius is very hard matchup because of his passive. You should try to freeze it near your tower as he will not be able to deal damage to you without getting tower aggro. Please beware that this matchup is not in your favor at all and it is extremely hard to beat a good darius.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Medium

This is a very simple matchup, and is very equal. Dr Mundo's abilities all cost health so you should go for trades as often as you can.

VS

Fiora

Medium

Fiora is another weird matchup that can be won by outplaying her and waiting to trade when her abilities are on cooldown. she can really destroy you so make sure you play safe and wait for her to use her abilities.

VS

Gangplank

Medium

As long as you dodge his barrels this is an easy matchup. Lookout for his ultimate and tell your team when he is 6 and that his ultimate is up. His W will remove your cc so make sure you layer your damage abilities.

VS

Garen

Easy

Garen is pretty useless except his Q is a silence and his ultimate does alot of damage. I would recommend trying to play around his Q and make sure that you go for full combos and poking him down so he doesn't regain alot of health from his passive.

VS

Gnar

Hard

Gnar is a really horrible matchup because he can harrass you whenever you go to last hit minions. The best time to fight him is when his E or Q is on Cooldown. You should try to poke him in lane. But beware of his rage bar because he will turn into mega Gnar at 100. Then he has CC on his W when in mega form. It is best to wait it out and fight just after MG is down.

VS

Illaoi

Hard

Illaoi is another hard matchup because of her tentacle damage. You should fight her when her E is down because it is really strong. Ideally you would dodge her E but if not run away and look for her tentacles spawning at the walls and dodge them. Prepare for lots of damage after level 6. Try and get ganks and put her behind early game.

VS

Irelia

Hard

Irelia completely counters you. The best thing i feel to do is to play safe and wait for her to waste her q. If she has failed her Q combo then you can possibly go for a trade. Her W makes her regen health very quickly so it is best to not trade if she has a better minion wave. When playing this matchup i would suggest trying to freeze it until you have your first item and then you can start to push and get an advantage. But be prepared for Backing early if she goes for a trade.

VS

Jax

Medium

Jax isn't really seen much anymore, however he can still be strong when he goes for a WQ combo. In this situation it is easy to win lane and just wait for his E to finish or using your W before he stuns you. You can counter him with your Q aswell, but beware you will be chased down in the long lane

VS

Jayce

Hard

Jayce is another hard matchup, He can completely destroy you in lane and poke you down early. i would suggest playing safe and farming until you get a gank or some items.

VS

Kayle

Hard

VS

Kennen

Hard

Kennan can chase you down, stun you and will destroy you if you are to aggressive or over extended. Make sure that you know if the kennan is going AP or AD, and then build to counter him.

VS

Kled

Hard

Kled is a very strange champion, in lane he is melee but can quickly turn ranged. There is no point going for full trades early, it is best to just farm and go for poke damage. Do not dive him as his Passive is very strong

VS

Malphite

Easy

Malphite is a easy matchup because he is another tank that doesn't do alot of damage. it is best to go for trades when his passive shield is not up.

VS

Nasus

Medium

Nasus is a farming lane, he will be stacking his Q's. It is good to go for trades when he is OOM or has used his E, because he is also melee his E will do alot of damage over time so ask for ganks if possible. In this matchup you will want to have it even.

VS

Nautilus

Medium

VS

Pantheon

Hard

Pantheon is a horrible matchup. He will keep spamming Q in lane and out damaging you. It is a good idea to keep your passive rolling and using it every time it is avilable to heal you. Do not go for full trades because he will out damage you. When he is 6 Tell your team because he will Ult to mid or bot. If he ults near you, you can W him and cancel his ult

VS

Poppy

Medium

VS

Quinn

Hard

Beware of Quinns damage, she can deal lots of damage to you when you go to last hit minions. In this matchup i would recommend playing under tower, and to be prepared to lose CS, but stay in XP range. It is much more efficient to lose a few CS then getting poked out and having to back.

VS

Renekton

Hard

Renekton is another strong Laner. Are we seeing a pattern here or something? Renekton like Irelia will out damage you and also has a escape and heal. It is best to go for trades if he has wasted any of his abilities. Your Q can interrupt renekton E

VS

Riven

Medium

In this matchup you can completely outplay Riven, or wait for her to outplay herself. Depending on ELO you can win this lane, due to rivens being over aggressive, you will want her to waste her abilities and then go for trades. Do not push the wave to far as she will zone you and then you wont be able to stay in lane or soak XP

VS

Rumble

Medium

Rumbles Q has a wide range and will damage you if you go to CS. His E also does alot of damage and slows you, so beware of them. After Rumble was semi-reworked and they changed his E. With this change, it is easier for him to do damage to you. I would recommend trying to trade with him when he is about to overheat or already overheated(?) but he will do more AD damage when doing so.

VS

Shen

Medium

Shen can be a easy matchup because he is not really a threat until he has sunfire cape. After he has this you cannot fight him because he will out damage you. When he is 6 Tell your team because he can ult team mates to save them. When he is casting his ult you can interrupt it by using W

VS

Singed

Medium

Singed will proxy farm you, in this game and matchup you will feel helpless, hopefully your jungler will help you chase him! But beware of his toxicity. In this matchup i would recommend that you just farm under tower and not tank minion AA because singed can cheese you.

VS

Teemo

Medium

Teemo does damage over time with his E. In this situation i would play passive and wait for one item and then going for trades. Alternatively you can ask for ganks  (pre 6 before he shrooms the river) and then get an advantage. Teemo is very squishy and easy to kill with ganks.

VS

Tryndamere

Medium

Tryndamere is a debatable match up, Some would say this is really easy others would say its hard. Tryndamere has a heal, slow , escape and can live with 1 hp!!! Be prepared to chase him down and lose your tower. He will keep pushing the lane so when your are team fighting be prepared to TP to a lane to save the tower.

VS

Yasuo

Hard

Yasuo, Yasuo, Yasuo... This can be a easy lane or super hard lane, depending on the enemy yasuo player, if he is really good, then it will be hard. Like Riven players you will want for them to outplay themselves and leave them in danger- this is when you go for a trade. When he has used his Q or all his E's on minions, you can also go for trades. Most yasuos will harrass you when you go for CS. So do not push instead keep near tower- this completely ruins Yasuo's kit and making the matchup easier.

Early Game Maokai Back to Top

Early Game

red_line.png

In the early game, your job as57.png  Maokai is to farm up, and prepare for the mid game. In the early game you need to farm farm and farm. In Champion select you should make sure that you're playing with the correct runes and prepare for the game. And level 1 you need to get your items and move to a position where you can spot the enemy if they go to invade. If you have to leash for your jungler, make sure they get a good leash. When you're in lane you want to decide if you're going to freeze or push. Once you have made your mind up, you need to stick to it. You should not go for any full trades until either level 3 or 4 as these give you some good damage by then. The majority of the time you can't solo kill your laner unless you get a gank or outplay them. When you have enough gold you need to buy the first part to your item.

You can either Save 12.png TP for a 12.png TP bot or go 12.png TP top - you must decide. If you are freezing the waves you still need to prepare for a 12.pngTP bot and keep your eyes on the map just encase your top laner roams. If you're going to follow with a 12.pngTP, you must first push the wave out as it may go on your tower. If you're being denied CS, be useful and roam with your jungler and get objectives or kills- You're not going to be useful mid game if you're behind in gold and XP because you just sat top doing nothing.

red_line.png

Mid Game Maokai Back to Top

Mid Game

red_line.png

Once you hit the mid game, you will want to leave your lane and group and pressure objectives. You can roam by pushing toplane out, and then rotating to another lane, for example if you toplaner backs- and you don't need to, then you should push the wave out, then rotate and go mid to apply some pressure or alternatively try to get the tower. When you go to group you should focus either the backline, frontline or anybody who can get on your carries. I like to play the "support" 57.png  Maokai where you protect your carries. When an enemy goes on your carry, you maokaiw.png Twisted Advance (W) them and rooting them in position this allows your carries to do damage and stay protected by you peeling for them. In the mid game, you will be looking for picks or to team fight. Don't force anything unless you really have too.

red_line.png

Late Game Maokai Back to Top

Late Game

red_line.png

When you've hit the late game, you should be near un-killable. You should be incredibly tanky and able to peel for your carries much more efficiently. As you have past the mid game, you should have some objectives already and should be looking to close out the game. One team fight can win your the game, but can also cost you the game. So your job is to protect your squishy and let them deal damage and win for you. Like i said above, you will want to maokaiw.png Twisted Advance the enemy front line and peel back for your carries. This allows them to stay safe and deal damage while you're protecting them.

red_line.png

Alternatively, if you're behind you will want to abuse mistakes by the enemy, for example you could 4.png Flash maokaiw.png Twisted Advance somebody and start the team fight. I would only recommend this if you have your team to follow up with and the enemy is out of position. If you cannot do this, then you will need to stall the game out and look for picks/ rotate for objectives.

Tips and Tricks Back to Top

Tips and Tricks

red_line.png

Here is a short list of Tips and Tricks that can help you in game.

red_line.png

  1. Your maokaiq.png Q can interrupt many champions dashes, knocking them back cancels there animation and stops the CC, for example you can knock back a 59.png Jarvin maokaie.png E maokaiq.png Q combo.
  2. You can Slow push or Fast push lanes with your maokaie.png E and maokaiq.png Q, this allows you to group faster because you will not have to spend a long time getting the minions to be even or start pushing.
  3. 57.png Maokai maokaiw.png W can make you untargetable, allowing you to outplay the enemy by getting out of sticky situations by becoming untargetable.
  4. 57.png Maokai's Saplings can be used as vision, you can maokaie.png E into bushes to provide vision for your team. Also can be used to Slow approaching enemies.
  5. 57.png Maokai can out sustain lots of champions with his strong maokaipassive.png passive. You should go for trades when your maokaipassive.png Passive is stacked or almost stacked so you can get regen when you go for a trade.
  6. 57.png Maokai is great as a frontline tank or a peeling tank. You should be both, in different times in the game your job will change, you will either be a frontline or peel for your carries- both are technically the same thing but you should try to help your carries regardless.
  7. Even if you're behind, you're still useful because your maokair.png ultimate is very strong for you and your team.
  8. Your kit (QWE) are on relatively low cost so when you go for trades you can burst people.
  9. In Ultra Rapid Fire you can stack your maokaie.png saplings in a bush and one shot a unsuspecting victim.
  10. Your ultimate is a V like ability- it snares people in the middle first You can use this to your advantage when going for trades.

How to Lane Melee against Ranged Back to Top

How to lane Melee vs Ranged

red_line.png

In League of Legends, there are a plethora of champions with different shapes, sizes and abilities. Many champions are melee and are recognizable by their point blank basic attacks. If you’ve ever played a game of League and if you’re reading this, you would know how unfortunate and painful it is to play as a melee champion against a ranged one.

Many players seem to give up the laning phase when they see that they’re against a ranged champion. Fear not! We will discuss some things you can do in these matchups to help improve your laning experience. Using the information presented will allow you to be more active in lane rather than giving it over to the enemy.

Starting Items

If you are a champion that doesn’t have the best early game, then I recommend starting with Doran’s Shield. This item is good as it gives you some early defensive stats that will benefit you in the early levels and help you sustain. Realistically, you will be unable to always trade exclusively against ranged champions. Taking early defensive stats will allow you to survive for longer during the early stages of the game.

Dorans Shield is a great starting item.

The item itself gives 80 health and flat health regeneration every 5 seconds. This is good because it will heal you back quicker when you are attacked. It will also restore health when taking damage from enemies. I do not recommend taking harass for free, but in some situations you will have to take damage to farm. This is overall a really good item to start with because it will allow you to survive in lane for longer against the enemy's harassment.

Level 1/2

In Melee versus Ranged matchups, the lane is quickly dictated by who hits level 2 first. In the all matchups, you will want to hit level 2 first but especially in melee versus ranged. If you do not get the level 2 first, then you will be denied minions and farm. While you may not be able to do anything against Ranged champions early, it is important to hit the level 2 to stay up in CS. Being an equal level will prevent the enemy going for extremely trades in the early levels. This will also prevent you from being poked out and losing minions and the experience. Farming is something you need to do and you must make sure to keep the wave in a reasonable position so you can farm easier.

Trading

Going for early trades against champions with ranged can be one way of swinging the lane into your advantage. If you can get the level 2 advantage, then you can go for a trade if the enemy is still level 1.

You can try to fight them if you have ranged abilities such as Akali Q, Zed Q and Talon W. However, this is very situational and depends on the champion you’re playing and who you’re against. It is recommended to look up your champion's power spikes. Most Assassins have the opportunity for an early level trade such as Zed’s W+Q combo. Champions who deal damage will benefit more from these early level trades compared to tanks.

Ability Farming

Most champions in League of Legends have at least 1 damaging ability. Some of them cost mana, some cost health and others cost energy. If you're in a matchup where you are being heavily denied CS from a champion with range, then I recommend trying to farm with your abilities.

If your ability doesn't cost any mana, then it is possible that you can farm with that ability. Dr. Mundo, The Madman of Zaun, has his Q ability that doesn't cost any mana but instead health. This ability will refund the cost if you kill the enemy hit. This can be a good way of farming because you are able to regenerate and get the cost back immediately or over time.

There are some other champions that can benefit from using their abilities to farm with such as Zed. While this sounds good on paper, it is highly situational. You should not, and I do not recommend using your abilities to only farm with. You need to poke and last hit. If you are only farming with your abilities, then you lose all your poke potential. You should not use your abilities to farm if they have high mana costs.

Sacrifice CS for Experience

Getting farm is incredibly important. In lanes where you will be poked when going to take farm, it is best to sacrifice some of them for the experience. While you do need gold and minions to buy items, experience and staying alive is more important. You need to stay up in CS and levels to still be hazardous to the enemy. While high elo players suggest getting a high amount of CS at 10 minutes, in lanes like this you will have to take what you can get. I recommend always trying to get Cannon minions, but be prepared to sacrifice some. Is that minion gold worth the amount of harassment from the enemy? Keep that in mind when farming.

Itemization

Depending on your champion, you may need to pick up more defensive items early. If you’re a tank and playing against someone with range such as a Kayle or Swain. I recommend buying early armor or magic resist before getting your first core item.

In Season 7, Bramble Vest was introduced and it is an amazing item. It’s a mini Thornmail with the same “Thorns” passive. It will deal damage back to enemies when you’re being attacked from basic attacks. This is good as it will allow you to deal damage to them when they attack you. At 1000 gold, the item grants 35 armor which will also help you when trading and farming.

There are many other defensive items out there. Some may be more viable then others and you should build what you need right now to survive the laning phase. Ninja Tabi is another good example of an early defensive item. However, you should only get this item if you will directly benefit from it.

Minion Wave

In every laning phase, you should play around with minion waves to get the most out of your lane. This depends on your champion, but you should try to have it in a more defensive position outside of your tower. You do not want to push the wave because the enemy will easily freeze the wave in a position much further up in the lane and deny you CS. This is something you do not want to happen. When backing or roaming, push the wave as far as you can so they cannot take your tower. Minions will act on instinct and if you’re being attacked by autos from the enemy champion, they will switch targets. This means the wave may mess up - keep that in mind when playing around with minions.

Roaming

If you’ve messed up the minion wave and are being heavily denied, then you should roam. If you are a champion with any potential CC, then you can look to roam and rotate with or without your jungler. Before roaming, make sure that it will be worth it. Push the wave so the enemy cannot take your tower. Look for potential opening in the game where you can gank your middle or bot. Wait for the enemy to use a core ability before going ham.

You must remember that you will be in a disadvantaged position at the start of the game. It is important to farm up and play safe especially early. You should try to position the wave in a favourable position to sustain a high level of creeps while also staying healthy and not being poked easily by enemies. It is better to stay a few CS behind early rather than having to back because you took too much aggro. Practise makes perfect when playing melee versus ranged. Every lane is different so keep an eye on what you can do to have the best possible outcome to this laning phase. In many cases, experience matters as League of Legends is a very, very situational game.
