Summoner Spells Back to Top

4.png- A must have to almost every single champion, good for engages, escape and chase, not much to say here.

3.png- A great summoner spell for supports, this is what you want to use for 90% of the games, its effects are so good to shut down an enemy carry or assassins early and later in the game.

14.png- It is a interesting option if you have an agressive adc or if the opponent laning phase is fairly weak, if one of your teamates have exaust, or simply to shut down the annoying Soraka's and her pesky heals.

Masteries Back to Top

Nothing new to be see here, 0/12/18 for more resistances and tankiness. Meditation is great on Maokai since he  fairly runs out of mana easily in the early game. Courage of Colossus is a really good mastery, and every tank that has good CC Should take it.

(You can level up E at level one if your team wants to invade, to check bushes or simply to have more vision at the beggining of the game)

Sap Magic maokaipassive.png- Honestly this passive is pretty good, gives you a good ammount of sustain, and combined with relic shield and biscuit you can regenerate instantly 1/3 of your health early in the game. And with 4 champion in the bot lane, you will be able to take advantage of this ability quite often.

Arcane Smashmaokaitrunkline.png - Your bread and butter ability, does a decent amount of damage and has a good slow, and it's fairly cheap, plus with a low cooldown at max Rank and some cooldown reduction, you will able to spam this very often.

Twisted advancemaokaiunstablegrowth.png - Your main ability to engage, has good CC and does moderately damage to tanks, max second for a better root duration.

Sappling tossmaokaisapling2.png-  Excelent ability to scout bushes and to catch  fleeing oponents, can also be used as a ward (each sappling last one minute) in case you don't have any in your inventory, however, buy a Sighstone every game though!

Vengeful Maelstronmaokaidrain3.png- This the ability that makes Maokai support so good, to be able to reduce damage in a teamfight is excellent, might not look a lot of damage in paper, but can win teamfights and save lifes. You can also use it as a small burst damage on teamfights after you received a bit of damage.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

    standard start
Don't forget to buy pinks every now and then. With the swifness nerfs, you might want to pick Mobility for more roaming power, or Mercury if they have a CC heavy team.
You also pick these boots if the enemy is either ap/ad heavy instead of more mobility.

Core Items

You want to build these items on most of the games
    Against heavy ap teams
Best Build currently, for balanced teams.
    against a full ad team.

Situational Items

SPIRIT CAN BE BUILD IF THEIR TEAM IS AP HEAVY, SAME FOR BANSHEE. WARMOGS IF YOU WANT MORE HEALTH. PICK THORNMAIL WHEN THEY HAVE A HEAVY AD TEAM.
If you are ahead and you want more damage, you can pick this instead of frozen heart
I rarely build this, but it is quite underated, good pick if you have a more spilpusher based team.
Not a bad item, but with the recent nerfs it is just not what it used to be.

With the ammount of nerfs she received  between patches, she is no longer a strong laner. still, becareful with her ulti, as she might set up ganks like that.

Kog'Maw

VS

Leona

Medium

She is a tough one, and if she brings ignate, try to play more passively and only engage when her abilties are on cooldown.

Lucian

Lulu

Lux

You don't see her often, but she high poke and high damage early game, avoid the binds and you should be fine.

A balanced match up, usually depends on the best player.

With recents buff to her, she is now in a very strong spot, high poke and high sustain.

Maokai Support? Back to Top

That is right, not a pick you see at all, however with its stats and abilities, he has a great  peel and has a good amount of cc into his kit. Might not be a top tier support, and he might be better at top, however it may surprise to see just how much tankiness this guy has on the bot lane with his passive and has a good kill potencial.

That being said he won't win games by itself, runs out of mana pretty quicky and his damage its on the low side, but he brings a lot of utility and vision with his sapplings, so I recommend you trying him on the botlane and see how good it is.

He is a solid Support and an all around champion, does not have a "true counter" in the botlane, that being said you require to have a good adc to be able to do something, if not  the case, try to roam and surprise the other enemy laners.

Early game Back to Top

Early game is all about letting your carry farm and try to take advantage of any mistakes from the opponent, Maokai is quite durable, so don't be afraid to engage in 2 vs 2 situation, depending on your matchup you may want to play more reserved or more agressive. Throw Sappling on Bushes to scout for any enemy, and try to setup ganks on bot lane because with his cc is fairly easy to get a Kill, or At least getting some flashes.

Mid Game Back to Top

At this point a tower or two might have fallen and now is about focusing objectives, small skirmishes, and roaming a bit so  try to gank other lanes and get a few kills. You probably have at this point Locket/Frozen Heart so you will be quite tanky Throw as many sappling as you can to obtain even more view of the map and prevent some surprises. Swap the trinket with the sweeping one to remove enemy's wards.

Late Game Back to Top

Late game is all about sticking together with the team and fight for Baron and Drakes always wards these two and again, throw sappling for more vision, and if you still have a slot, buy pinks!

In teamfights remember, peel for your carry, protect him and make sure he doesn't die  unless you're far ahead, don't go flash w into their enemy, you are the frontline and you need to soak and receive the cc from the enemies and survive as much as possible .

What if the carry sucks or simply he's bad?

There will be some cases where your adc is just having a bad game, or  he simply just sucks, in these cases I would suggest to protect your strongest ally, ap carry/top/jungle, since they will be the most dangerous for the enemy team, and  definitely will be focused a hell lot more, Pop your 3401.png, use your locket, q+w and pray that it will work. Maokai can't win games by itself, so you really need to depend on a good teammate that can carry and win the game.

Who Am I? Back to Top

I'm Ninjise, a EUW Gold IV player, I've been playing League since early season 2, I'm not much of a ranked person, due to how stressful that enviorment is, but I've played over a 2000 games and have a wide knowledge of the game and champions, played hundred games of Maokai in every lane but adc, with a good amount of success.

I often play champion on unusual lanes, and while it might look trollish, it often work due to the inability of the opponent to deal with such rare pick, it also can confuse the opponents on draft pick, since no one will expect a Maokai Bot.

This is my first guide, so feedback will be appreciated and if you have anything to say you can post a comment. Hopefully this guide gave you a good insight of how Maokai is a legit support, and that you have success with it! :D

If this Guide has a small sucess, I might make another unusual guide in the future. Will try to update with every new patch.
Also more champion matchup will come soon, along with the detail you need to know for each one.

I made a Nunu Support guide here so go check it out if you want http://www.lolking.net/guides/398535
