Summoner Spells Back to Top

11.png3.png OR 4.png
The general go to summoners for Jungle Yi: I almost always take Exhaust to make it easier to duel even the most fed carries, along with easier pre-6 ganks, but Flash is also completely viable for its defensive and offensive utility.  For lane yi, always take flash, since it's your only way to escape from ganks, especially before level 6.

Other good spells:
12.png I don't personally run this on Jungle Yi, but it's good for top/mid Yi if you're not confident with your ability to win lane, or want to exert greater global pressure with TP ganks.  Viable for a splitpush/TP gank oriented Yi player too, just not my style
14.pngGreat for mid lane Yi, if you can get of a good trade with Q + E a few times, this is the tipping point to trick your opponent to thinking you don't have the damage to kill them.  For Jungle Yi, I've seen people take it, but I prefer Exhaust for it's offensive and defensive utility.

Situational:

1.pngDecent if you're against a Morgana/Lissandra/Lulu sort of team, but you should be getting QSS + Mercs for these situations anyway, and proper timing with your Q will negate most of the skillshot based CC

What?:
7.pngYou're already super fast, and have meditate.  This is nearly useless on Yi.
6.pngYou're Master Yi!  You shouldn't be having problems sticking to people.  Get Flash if you need mobility.
21.pngI suppose you could cheese a bait with Barrier + Meditate, but a 500 hp health won't matter much when you have 3-4k health and exhaust as a defensive option.

Masteries Back to Top

Alright, there's a lot of options here.

Fury vs Sorcery:  Yi tends to auto attack a lot, and attack speed works well with his Double Strike, Alpha Strike, and Wuju Style.

Double Edged Sword vs Feast: Feast is actually pretty nice in lane, but you'll soon notice that 20 hp every 25 seconds is actually a really small amount of healing, especially after the early laning phase, while the 3% bonus damage is impactful throughout the game, helping with clears, last hitting, and murdering your foes.

Vampirism vs Natural Talent:  Natural Talent should only be taken on hydrid champions 5.png10.png28.png24.png39.png42.png etc.  It's designed to be great on them, and garbage on anyone else.  Yi is NOT a hybrid, even if he builds Guinsoo's Rageblade.  It also takes awhile to ramp up, while the 2% lifesteal and spellvamp will be useful all game.

Bounty Hunter vs Oppressor: I suppose you could take oppressor if you're building 3022.png, or if your team has a lot of CC, but Yi really has no built in CC that'd synergize with this.  You're Yi!  You'll likely be getting kills due to your high damage output, so he's one of the easier champions to stack Bounty Hunter on.

Battering Blows vs Piercing Thoughts: You do mostly physical damage.  This will help more than magic pen.

Fervor of Battle: This mastery is AMAZING on Yi.  You stack it up super quickly with your attack speed, and it can add 112 damage to EVERY one of your auto attacks, which you will be applying with your 2.5 attack speed + double strike.

Savagery vs Wanderer: Both are fine.  I take Savagery, but Wanderer works totally fine too if you are willing to give up a little clear speed for roam speed.

Runic Affinity vs Secret Stash vs Assassin: With the nerf to assassin to make it only apply to champions, I've started taking Runic Affinity to keep longer baron/dragon/blue/red buffs on me.  Just helps with clear speed, and Yi's main power is in teamfighting.  Assassin isn't bad, just a bit more split-push + duel oriented.  Most people will wise up to the fact that it's a bad idea to 1v1 Yi, so try not to chase people to get the most value out of Assassin.

Executioner vs Meditation: You will occasionally go OOM, but it's not worth taking Meditation over increased damage for everyone below 40% HP, especially because it's precisely your job to clean up these low people in fights.  For lane Yi, Meditation is fine, since it'll provide enough mana regen for his lane phase, since he uses enough to go OOM, but not enough to necessitate a mana item.

Bandit vs Dangerous Game:  Tons of healing for cleaning up fights, or a mastery that gives 200 gold max for the entire game?  Not a question.  Bandit's for supports.

Note: for lane Yi, I've found Thunderlord's is nice because of the short trades and difficulty stacking fervor in lane.  It'll make you weaker in teamfights, but going precision + Thunderlords is decent for lane Yi.

Resolve Tree: This tree isn't great for Yi.  You have meditate and your clears are healthy.  You don't really stack resistances either, or need the early health of Veteran's Scars.

masteryipassive.pngDouble Strike:  It's more damage.  It's very rare that Yi players will need to manage this whatsoever: it's just a nice sack of damage that also helps lower your Alpha Strike cooldown, works with Devourer, and will apply the on hit effects you're building.

alphastrike.pngYour main outplay ability that you'll generally want to max first for the increased damage and lowered cooldown.  Lots of damage, works well with both AD and attack speed.  Some key things to note: when ganking, usually try to save this for after the enemy uses their mobility, so that you don't Q on them, they ezrealarcaneshift.png out, and then you waste your ult chasing them or don't get them at all.  Also try to save this to dodge skillshots if possible.  For lane Yi:  if you want to harass with this ability safely, then make sure that it will kill the target you cast it on, so that your Q hits the opponent, and returns you to your cast location so that you don't end up under tower or in a big minion wave, ready to get ahriseduce.pngand die.
meditate.pngThe heal on this is nice for clears, and the damage reduction will save you many times.  Use this to block large burst such as syndraR.pngor ekkoR.png , NOT just when you're about to die.  The damage reduction is actually the bigger selling point of this ability in teamfights than the healing, so use it when you're out of position and need to buy a little time for your team to help you with the fight.  Max this last though, cause this is a one point wonder.

wujustyle.png Damage!  True Damage that works with Devourer, and bonus AD.  Just turn this on whenever you start a fight.  You do lose the bonus AD when it's on cooldown, but it's still worth the fat loads of true damage you'll be dumping on your enemies.

highlander.pngGotta go fast!  Actually, this ability isn't that amazing at Rank 1, and you'll still need boots to catch people.  It scales harder and harder over time, gaining more and more attack and movement speed.  Immunity to slows, and resets on kills is what makes Yi such a Pentakill machine. These resets, as long as you can get a kill or assist in teamfights, are what keep you going and getting kills while the enemy team has run out of abilities to use.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

    Standard Jungle Start
    Standard Lane Start

Core Items

Bloodrazor, Guinsoo's, and BotrK synergize incredibly well and will let you hit 2.5 attack speed with Ult.
For lane Yi, you can't get Devourer, but these two will still give you plenty of damage together.

Situational Items

Typical Finished Build (Jungle, vs Mixed Damage)
Typical Finished Build (Jungle, vs AD)
Typical Finished Build, (Jungle, vs AP)
A great item for Tank Yi (in fact, I used to just get Devourer + Titanic then go tank), resets AA, applied twice with devourer, and scales damage with your health.
Great Bruiser items if you want HP + AD. Get BC vs armor stacking tanks for sure.
Yi's worst nightmare is getting CC'd to death. These items will help prevent that. Remember Tenacity does not affect knockups/knockbacks, and that Yi is already immune to slows.
GOTTA GO FAST!!!! This item is great for sticking, bursting, and surviving, even after repeated nerfs. Must have item if there's any sort of physical damage on their team.
Good synergy with Devourer, but it should only be taken vs heavy magic damage comps

Noob trap #1: Following the exact same build every game.  You should always be building to fit your and the enemy's team.  You don't need armour vs a team comp like 57.png60.png63.png25.png42.png, though you'll probably need some tenacity for all those snares and stuns.

Noob trap #2: Building Yi full damage.  NO!  Don't do it!  Yi WILL have more than enough damage with 3 damage items, and needs tankiness in order to survive long enough to get his resets.  If you build full damage, you will Q once in teamfights, then instantly get shredded and focused.  TANK TO RESET!  EDIT:  Full damage Yi is viable, but still highly not recommended to new players.  Tank Yi is far more forgiving still in terms of making mistakes.

Noob trap #3: Buying potions.  YI DOES NOT NEED POTIONS.  If you buy potions and try to do the no-buff powerclear, you will not have enough money to buy your upgraded jungle item.  Yi doesn't need them.  He's super healthy in the jungle with meditate.png, and even without taking it level 2 he can do the entire no buff clear without pots.

That being said, your core items will pretty much always be Challenging Smite + Bloodrazor.  Chilling Smite is a decent option if you need to stick to people especially with the Highlander nerfs, but I've personally enjoyed the dueling power of Challenging Smite.

Your next core item is Guinsoo's Rageblade.  You don't really use the AP, but it gives 48% attack speed when stacked.  It's not as good on Yi as it is on Jax or Kayle, but it still works great since it's easy for Yi to stack it, and he benefits so much from Attack Speed.

If you're against a team where Ninja Tabi or Merc Treads are better than Berserker's Greaves, then grab those and a Botrk to round out your Defensive option + 2.5 attack speed.  Botrk and Guinsoos work perfect together: attack speed helps both of them apply each other very quickly + Devourer, and the AD of BotrK also makes Guinsoos hit a little harder.  If you're getting Berserker's Greaves, then skip the BotrK to avoid overcapping on attack speed.

After your 2-3 damage items, go defensive.  Mix and match here to meet your needs.

VS

Aatrox

Easy

Aatrox is a flawed champion through and through.  Decent jungle sustain and ganks, but he eats his own health if he builds tank, and gets blown up if he's squishy.  You shouldn't have trouble dueling him our cleaning up teamfights, though he'll have a stronger pre-6 with his knockup and slow to gank with.

Use 3.png if his damage is starting to hurt.

VS

Amumu

Medium

A 3102.pngor 3140.png will be your best friend here.  His ult can screw you up big time in teamfights, and as an Amumu player too, the sad mummy can lock things down a long time.  Regardless, if he misses his ult or has it on cooldown, he's easy pickings.  He's also very weak pre-6 outside of his bandagetoss.png, so it's unlikely he'll manage to slow you down before your power spike.

VS

Anivia

Hard

This bird is strong, and she's going to rip you to pieces if one flashfrost.pnghits you.  Luckily, her mana costs can throttle her, and her stun is slow moving and easy to dodge with alphastrike.png.  She scales hard, can wall you off to stop you from escaping ganks, and has insane damage if you ever do get caught.  Not easy, but not impossible to deal with.

VS

Blitzcrank

Medium

You get grabbed, you die.  You use your alphastrike.png, you wreck him.  Not much to say here.

VS

Darius

Easy

Your sustained damage is much greater than his, so if you get hooked, just rip him apart with 3153.png and 3071.png.  Try to dodge his hook with alphastrike.pngthough, and treat it as a farm lane until you outscale in dueling potential.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Easy

Was broken throughout preseason, but he's not a threat at all to Yi with his lack of CC, and your 3153.png.  His cleavers can be easily dodged or meditated.

VS

Ekko

Hard

I really, really like Ekko's design.  Awesome lore, personality, a well designed kit with fair counterplay...

Anyway, Ekko is actually a fairly tough match for Yi.  He has plenty of mobility with his ekkoE.pngand ekkoR.png, and actually has a good shot of getting away from you.  Along with that, if you get hit by ekkoW.png, you're probably going to die.

That being said, you can time your alphastrike.pngto stay attached to him when he uses his mobility spells if you have the prediction skills.  You can also run out of his stun before it completes, or get a 3102.png/3139.pngto negate the stun completely + get some hefty MR.

VS

Elise

Easy

The spider's got nothing on you past early game.  She will be likely pressuring lanes more than you early, but counterganks are effective against her all in kit, and she has no chance of outtrading you unless she gets incredibly fed early game.  Late game, she's little more than a stun bot.

VS

Evelynn

Medium

She can one shot your squishies late, has great MS and damage, but is shafted horribly early game.  Honestly, she's pretty much a burstier version of Yi with stealth, but gives up sustained damage.  I don't have too much experience against Evelynn, but both of you will likely be competing at similar levels throughout the game.

VS

Fiddlesticks

Medium

This used to be one of the hardest matchups for Yi, with his terrify.pngcausing you to run away at lighting speeds, his fiddlesticksdarkwind.pngmessing with your Q engage, and his W drain.pngunable to be broken due to your lack of CC or escapes to get out of range.

However, Fiddle's been in a pretty weak spot for awhile now.  Past level 6, you can just beat him up with his incredible squishiness, and I haven't met a fiddle player that was a real challenge in months.  He might still be tough, but for now, I've put him down as a medium rating.

VS

Fiora

Hard

This is a matchup where you definitely want 3.pngin.  She's the "grand duelist", but your exhaust will neuter her damage and allow you to trade hard with her.  Luckily, you don't have any CC to cause her fiorariposte.pngto stun, so just hit her hard and fast.

However, I've seen many Fiora's snowball out of control, especially because it's hard for Yi to pressure a top Fiora enough to prevent her from getting fed, and her fioraq.pngcan serve as an escape if you do try.

VS

Graves

Easy

He's bursty, but with your tankyi build, you should be able to stick to him and out DPS him, especially with 3.png.  Annoying with the smokescreen, but make sure to just keep A-clicking, and you can beat him.

VS

Hecarim

Easy

I've always thought of Hercarim as a tankier version of Master Yi.  He can snowball very hard, but his recent nerfs hit him hard.  Remember, slows will work against his passive, so 3.png, 3742.png, and 3022.png work great vs Hecarim.  He is one of the few champions that are capable of outrunning you though, so grab the slows (he's not slow immune), and you'll be fine.

VS

Jarvan IV

Easy

J4's only possibility of outtrading you is pre-6, and your 3.pngshould easily handle this.  You can leave his jarvanivcataclysm.pngwith your alphastrike.png, and straight up out-damage him in most scenarios.  He's not a bad jungler, but his kit isn't that great at stopping you.

VS

Kassadin

Hard

Too. many. dashes.

It's true that Kassadin is weak to AD champions, but even with your alphastrike.pngand highlander.png, it's not easy to stick to this guy.  You can outdamage him if he goes OOM or still has a long cooldown on his riftwalk.png, but there's no guarantees you'll catch Kassadin when he's hit his power spike.

Try to gank him pre-6, cause he has no escapes then.  In lane, try to go for a level 2 or 3 cheese for a kill, and roam once you hit 6.

VS

Kha'Zix

Hard

My god, this guy is back with a vengeance.  More on this matchup later, but from what I've seen, Khazix has more than enough damage to burst people, and get away with his khazixE.png resets.

VS

Kindred

Medium

Definitely a skill and decision based matchup.  She can be very strong early with her kiting ability, but after you hit 6, she won't be kiting you any longer, and her damage falls off to the point where you can kill her pretty easily after her ult.

Remember to stay in kindredR.png: even if you're not low, it has a nice heal, and can actually buy you time to get your alphastrike.pngback up.  Use your alphastrike.pngonly after she's used her kindredQ.png, but keep in mind with a 4.png, she can probably kite you out until level 6.

VS

Lee Sin

Hard

This guy is a pain in the ass to play against.  I know he averages a low win rate in low elo, but DAMN it hurts.

However, I've played enough Yi to have built an arsenal of tools against him.  See my vs heavy invade junglers section below.

Keep in mind his blindmonkrkick.pngis targeted, has a long CC duration that can't be cleansed, has a low cooldown, and will leave you too far away to chase him or anyone he kicked you from.  Besides his ult though, you can meditate.pnghis damage and alphastrike.pnghis primary gapcloser blindmonkqone.png.

VS

Lissandra

Hard

She's an incredible CC mage, and her lissandraR.pngand lissandraW.pngcan leave you stuck, ready to die.  You'll definitely need 3111.pngand maybe 3102.pngagainst her.

Make sure to use your alphastrike.pngwhen her lissandraE.pngis approaching it's end, since you can follow her when she blinks if you do so.

VS

Master Yi

Medium

This is...not fun.

You're going to have to outsmart him, have better jungle and gank efficiency, and see who wins in the end.

Luckily, many Yis take 4.png, and if you take 3.png, you have an innate advantage just from the damage reduction and resist shred when trying to duel him.

VS

Nasus

Easy

His wither.pngwon't do anything to do when you're ulted, and with a 3153.png, 3071.png, 3.png, and a few tank items, you should have no trouble outtrading him, ganking him, and outsplitpushing him until he hits extremely late game.  If you've reached that point so far without shutting him down or getting at least a few inhibs, then he deserves to win the matchup.  Your meditate.pngwill halve or more his siphoningstrikenew.png.

VS

Nautilus

Hard

Master Yi's worth enemy is crowd control, and this guy is just a giant pile of it.  You can 1v1 him if he's by himself, but his nautilusgrandline.pngwill make your life hell (targeted knockup that cannot be cleansed).  In fact, the only thing that can be cleansed or reduced by tenacity is his passive, which is only a .5 second root.

VS

Nunu

Easy

VS

Pantheon

Hard

Pantheon is a tough trader, powerful ganker, and incredibly good in the right hands.  His combo of pantheon_leapbash.pngpantheon_heartseeker.pngpantheon_throw.pngcan leave you nearly dead, is targeted, and it's not great to build 3111.pngunless his team has heavy magic damage too.  Later on, he does fall off, but if he's a good enough, he can cause all of his lanes to win so hard they'll cut off your jungle before you can even get sated.

However, if he fails to get his lanes rolling quickly enough or invade you early, you can smash him later: he's not much more than a stun bot, and his combo will decline in oneshot potential over time, especially after you get 3742.png.

VS

Quinn

Hard

I hate this champion.  I never thought I'd hate a champion more than 64.png, but Quinn is actually really hard to shut down.

Her blind is going to screw you up hard, and unlike Grave's smokescreen, you can't run out of it.  Her quinnE.pngis a targeted knockback that she can use right after your alphastrike.png and follow up with quinnQ.png to leave you basically dead.

It's going to suck.  You can try to dodge her quinnQ.png, but it's not going to be easy.

VS

Rammus

Medium

Everyone says Rammus is a counter, and I can see why.  However, like the Malphite matchup, a 3071.png is going to help a lot.  Reducing Rammus's armour has a doubled effect on his defensiveballcurl.pngand 3075.png, while reducing his AD.  A 3102.png will reduce his damage spectacularly, and while he is a strong pick against Yi, he also doesn't do that much to slow you down before you hit your power spikes.  If you're behind, he'll be able to kill you with puncturingtaunt.png and defensiveballcurl.png, but otherwise, it's not the worst matchup out there.

VS

Rengar

Easy

VS

Riven

Hard

She outputs a lot of damage, especially with her rivenfengshuiengine.png, and her rivenmartyr.pngand riventricleave.png cand hold you down long enough to smash you to pieces.  Try to alphastrike.pngat least one of her CC abilities, and then you have a good shot of outtrading her.  You can meditate.pngher wind slash, but if you're low enough that she wants to use it, you're probably dead already.

VS

Shaco

Hard

He's tricky to catch, but if you've hit your powerspike, you can usually just kill both him and his clone.  His stealth is annoying but a 2043.pngcan help solve that.

I've played enough Yi to have built an arsenal of tools against him.  See my vs heavy invade junglers section below.

VS

Shyvana

Hard

Shyvana's a lot like Yi: She packs the sated Devourer, the on hit effects, some movement speed, and farm-heavy style.  If you have 3.pngand she doesn't, you can outduel her, and since she lacks CC outside of her ult, you'll have more teamfight cleanup potential with your mobility and resets.

If Shyvana is packing 3.png, this is going to be a lot like a mirror matchup.  She tends to be a bit tanky, so a 3071.pngand 3153.pngaren't bad ideas here.  Use your jungle senses and outfarm, outgank, and outteamfight her.

VS

Sion

Easy

Everything about this guy has too much counterplay...

Just use your alphastrike.pngto dodge his skills or run out of the hitbox, and then smash him to pieces with a 3153.png.

VS

Tahm Kench

Medium

You're going to need a 3153.pngto chunk this guy's 6000 hp.  He's been nerfed recently, so it's not as bad, but he's a bit too tanky to focus in teamfigths, and if he manages to get a tahmkenchW.pngon you, you're probably dead since that's a huge amount of damage + he can apply another stun fairly quickly.  Remember if he as a lot of gray health, he'll be fairly hard to dive, but if he doesn't have it, his tahmkenchE.pngwon't be too big.  Not too difficult, but he can be annoying to play against.  A 3140.pngwill remove the stacks and the Devour, so it's a good option here.

VS

Teemo

Medium

His blindingdart.pngwill mess you up, similar to a dodge except you can't focus other people.  However, from experience, Teemos tend not to have it up by the time you go in, and the rest of his kit is so laughably weak that you can often just hit him through the blind and then kill him afterwards.  All of his abilities and damage can be meditate.png.

Grab a 2043.pngfor this matchup: it'll let you spot the annoying Teemos that sit in bushes and you can't break out of stealth with your lack of CC, and to see his shrooms that can chunk you out if you ram into too many of them.

VS

Trundle

Medium

Trundle's a pretty cool stat-stealing champion that can dominate the early game with his AD reductions, trundleE.pngto block your escape, and trundleR.pngto leave you heavily weakened.  However, he falls off pretty hard, and after awhile, you can ignore most of his attempts to weaken you and hit him hard.  He's a good duelist, but he weakens over time, and doesn't have great interactions with most items.

VS

Vayne

Hard

If she lands a vaynecondemn.png, you're dead.  Her multiple dashes and stealth also makes it hard for you to stick to her.

However, she is EXTREMELY squishy, and if you can hit her a few times before she can properly position and react, she's easy to burst down.  Still, be wary of your and her positioning, and respect her damage output.

VS

Volibear

Easy

Your 3.png will give you the power to survive his early game, and outside of that, Volibear doesn't do much outside of a flip and a bite, which you can meditate.png.  Make sure to check whether his passive is up by clicking on him in early game, and applying a heal reduction with 3123.pngisn't a bad idea at a cheap price.

VS

Warwick

Medium
3140.png Get this, and never worry about pesky wolves pouncing on you again!

Warwick is actually one of the few champions that Yi has trouble dueling, especially if he gets the movement speed from his bloodscent.pngto get away from you.  However, he won't be pressuring you early, and his teamfighting is fairly lackluster, while yours is incredibly strong.  Don't splitpush unless you're sure he's far away, because he can lock you down and kill you pretty easily.

VS

Yasuo

Medium

You have a good shot of outtrading him in lane, and your only problem will be if he can get a yasuoR.pngoff.  He's also as vulnerable to ganks as you are, and his yasuoW.pngisn't too effective against someone with no projectiles.  Use your wujustyle.pngwhenever trading, and put a point or two in your meditate.pngto keep your sustain up.

How do I PLAY Yi? (Jungle) Back to Top

Master Yi is a farm heavy jungler that scales well into the mid and late game.  Generally, you're going to want to start bot side at Gromp or Krugs, do your two buffs, then scuttle + gank top or mid with your 3.png, and then back and prepare for Bloodrazor.

Alternate clear:  You start with machete (no pots), and do the 4 nonbuff camps, back, buy your upgraded jungle item, then do a full clear, ending at level 5, one or two camps from level 6 (the jungle xp has been changed, I'll look into how much you need).  If you got a good leash from your bot lane, you can start with a point in E at level 2, but if you're a bit low/unsure, get W for a slower but safer clear.  Note:  you may lose a buff or two doing this if you get invaded, but this might be preferable to dying at your buff at level 2 or 3 and losing the buff if you did buff to buff clear.

You can solo dragon at level 6, once you have your devourer + refillable potion.  Try to gank bot level 6, if you want to do the dragon more safely, and get yourself some gold to get ahead with.

PLAYING YI IN TEAMFIGHTS:

Ok, here's where most Yi players go wrong.  Master Yi is insanely strong, and sometimes can 1v5, but that is NOT his role.  His role is to be DPS and cleanup duty, and that means you do NOT engage teamfights.  Too often have I seen Master Yis run in, Alpha Strike, then instantly die while their team struggles to follow up.  You do NOT go in until the teamfight has already erupted, and at least some of the CC has been blown.  Then, you can run in, kill everyone with your insane damage + tankiness, and get tons of resets to keep your killing spree up.

Remember, you don't do damage when dead.  Don't get risks to try to get the triple, when the 0/5 Ashe is sitting under tower, and staying alive would mean taking several objectives.

tl;dr: farm hard, gank when possible, play cleanup duty in teamfights and hit things really fast!

How do I PLAY Yi? (Lane) Back to Top

Master Yi is a DPS-focused laner, who performs well vs assassins and bruisers.  He can struggle vs CC heavy champions, including control mages and tanks.

In lane, you can take thunderlords, and try to make short trades with Q + E autos to proc it, before, running behind the minion line again to shield yourself from their poke.  I find mid lane Master Yi far superior to top lane: few assassins can burst Yi through his meditate.png, and the shorter lane distance means it's harder to gank.  Master Yi is VERY vulnerable to ganks, as his kit is very good for going in, but poor at coming out.

Some protips: Putting additional points in Q will increase it's mana cost to very high rates, so it's often a good idea to point a few points in W instead (which does not raise it's mana cost) to outsustain and play for the late game.
If you Q a dying minion and kill it with the Q, you will reappear at your cast location allowing you to poke the enemy champion with Q without putting yourself in their range.  However, if you want to land on the champion or minion, simply Q the champion or a healthy minion to put yourself in range to land a few autoattacks.

At level 6, Yi becomes a good roamer with his waveclear, mobility, and damage.  It's easy to head botlane and grab a few kills + dragon.

Other than that, lane Yi will eventually transition to be fairly similar to Jungle Yi: you won't have the devourer, which sucks, but you can still play teamfights and hit powerspikes at a decent rate.  I don't recommend lane Yi to anyone besides hardcore Yi fans though, it can be difficult to work with, and hard to snowball a lane that you're head in due to your lack of engage or lockdown.

Playing Yi vs Heavy Invade Junglers Back to Top

Alright, in a few of my matchups, I noted that I made a section for playing Yi vs heavy invade junglers.  Here are a few things I accumulated in my experience vs Shacos, Lees, Nidalees, Reksai's, etc.  Yi has been traditionally viewed as easy to invade, and although that's true, there are ways to soften his weaker early game.

If you place a ward before minions spawn, it will NOT be up by the time you do your buff.  If I'm against a Lee Sin or Nidalee, I often keep my ward until I actually start my buff, so that if they try to steal it, I can see them before tehy arrive.

When facing someone who will likely be invading you, do NOT path predictably.  For example, if the usual route is Gromp -> Blue -> Red, I'll usually do Gromp -> Wolves -> Blue, or Blue -> Wolves-> Gromp.  When the invader shows, they'll usually be confused as to where I went, and either leave (wasting time), start the buff (easy steal and even kill with 3.png), or wait (wasting more time).

If you're really worried about the invade, ask your teammates to place "late" wards (1:15-1:30 is good), and that there's a good chance you'll be invaded.  Even if you die, they can usually respond and kill the enemy jungler to compensate.  If you can trade 1 for 1, that's usually ok in the beginning, since they lose early pressure, while you scale harder than them.  Don't let this get to your head though, since later on, dying means your team loses the carry that they worked so hard to survive and let scale up.

Starting a 1041.png2043.png2003.png3340.png can be a good start vs someone like 35.png28.png, and one potion is usually enough since you have meditate.pngto stay healthy.  In fact, I think this start is great if you don't want to be greedy with the 2031.png that you sell later for gold.

6.9 and Yi (and Crit/AD Yi discussion) Back to Top

6.9...Ouch.  I almost stopped playing Yi when his winrate hit 43% (lower than Teemo or Mordekaiser jungle or Top lane Yi).  It's better now, but there's no denying that Yi is weaker than his golden age of 6.1-6.6.

Bloodrazor:  Much weaker than Devourer.  3% max hp in physical damage was no higher than the 60 flat magic damage of Devourer, was easier to build against, and loss of phantom hit made this item really, really bad (at one point, no Bloodrazor jungler has a positive win rate).  It's better now, but still weak compared to Devourer.  However, the other jungle enchants aren't any better for Yi, so pick it up.

Rageblade: Overall nerf for Yi.  The phantom hit was a buff, but everything else about the item was a nerf: harder to stack, less attack speed, MUCH higher cost, loss of AoE damage.  It's great on ranged champs that couldn't use the phantom hit effectively before because of the 1 in 4 vs 1 in 2, but now that double stacking has been removed, it really sucks on most melee champs.  Usable, but you're going to be choked on gold for a long time while buying it.

Immobile mages: Master Yi excels at killing squishy targets with easy to dodge CC.  161.png134.png99.png69.png112.png101.png115.png These guys fit the bill perfectly.  As long as you dodge their CC with alpha strike, they're sitting ducks for you to blow up.

Crit Yi:  I've tried this again in ranked after aka Silencee hit Diamond 1 with it, and here's the rundown:

Pros
You can two shot squishies with the Alpha Strike + Statikk Shiv auto combo
You snowball much harder due to your higher damage output
Your resets are much more powerful since your Alpha Strike is much stronger than on Tank Yi, who uses it for some damage, but mostly as a gapcloser

Cons
You die if you get hit by ANYTHING
Everyone will focus you even harder since they know you're squishy
You get poked out more easily
It's harder to get resets unless you play perfectly in teamfights

Overall, the changes to encourage AD Yi along with the repeated nerfs to Tank/onhit Yi has made Crit Yi viable, though I still would not recommend it to new players that aren't quite used to Alpha Strike and Meditate's usage and power.  However, it's a fun build to pull out, especially against low CC or squishy teams.
