Summoner Spells Back to Top

Exhaust/Flash: My most used setup since Yis early is weaker than most of his opponents. Exhaust will make up for that and will bring you ahead in trades and will give you the strength to kill your enemy if they engage on you.

Flash/Ignite: I don't like Ignite most of the time on Yi, since it won't help you survive any burst or gives you the defence or catchup potential you will need in lane. Only take this versus enemys with a lot of selfheal.

Flash/TP. Post 6 this will give you huge roaming potential. The time it takes to TP was nerfed, but with highlander.png you will have the speed to catch up if the enemy is runing.

Always use Flash. It will help you escape, dodge dangerous skills or with chasing.

New Runes Back to Top

Masteries Back to Top

Ferocity is pretty standard. In case you are wondering why "Opressor": It will help you in lane when you use 3.png or 3144.png/3153.png.

Resolve will help you out with your poor defense and provides more power in lane than Cunning would. Additionaly you get "Insight" which is extremely important for Yi since you rely on your summoners early on.

alphastrike.png: Your bread and butter! This skill will show your enemy if you are MASTER Yi or just some facerolljerk.
Be aware of its high manacost early on so DO NOT spam it. Use it to engage/poke when you want to pick up a fight, use it to dodge the enemy engageskill and reengage on him, use it to shove your lane when your enemy is MIA and you wan't to recall. If you use it to engage, use it on caster minions since it will clear them out instantly and therefore reduce the minion damage you might get. But use it so that you will hit your enemy with it too, which is not that hard if you've gotten used to it.

Its CD will be reduced by 1 second everytime you hit ANY enemy (champion/minion/jungle/wards) with it and will be reduced by 2 seconds every time your masteryipassive.png proccs. (you know, because of two hits)

Max it first because it will deal your most damage and helps you surviving a 1v1 (because you cleared minions) and it will help you push your wave fast if you need to recall. You won't kill melee minions with it, but they will be left with enough HP that one hit is enough to kill them. (at rank 2 and above)

meditate.png: Another skill that will determin if you are good or not. Proper use of this one is another tool to survive and kill your lane opponent. It will heal you for a good amount early on so you might be able to recover from a bad trade. Don't use it with more than 50% unless you have enough mana and if you know there won't be happening anything special while it is on CD because: You wan't this ability off CD when you start a fight with someone who has a high burst potential. While channeling this gives you a good amount of damage reduce which might make the difference between kill or be killed. Reduce the enemys burst on you so you have enough HP left to fight them back. You can be stuned/silenced while channeling which will interrupt its use, so keep that in mind.

Max it last.

wujustyle.png: Underrated but so damn strong. If you invest just one point in it, it will give you 10% AD passively which will NOT increase the higher you level it up. On use it will give your basic hits bonus true damage. The trick is to use it ONLY when your passive is going to procc its double strike. THat way you get the true damage two times + you will get it two times more because your passive will procc again while it is active. (early game where you don't have that much attack speed this is important to dish out more damage!) While this skill is on CD the 10% AD will be lost until it is ready again.

FUCKING IMPORTANT!!!: NEVER EVER USE THIS WHEN YOU HIT A TURRET!!! Turrets don't receive true damage from it but you will lose the 10% bonus AD.

highlander.png: The skill which makes Master Yi. It boosts your movementspeed AND attack speed by a huge amount AND it gives immunity to ALL slow effects. ALL means that even attack speed reduces won't affect you while it is active. 3.png will work though, even if it doesn't slow you down it will still reduce your damage dealt by 40%.
By the time you get this on lane you are ready to blow up your opponent. Let them come to your turret or as near as possible and then jump on them. Early on you will need to use slow effects to stick on them good enough to fully use your ult. Or wait for them to engage on you, then 3.png them, press R and kill them. There are only a few matchups that will be strong enough to fight you while you are on Highlander. Given its realy short CD this Ult is extremely strong and you should not be afraid to use it.

Level it whenever it is available.

masteryipassive.png: Your broken passive: Every 4th hit will be a double strike (two hits while the second one only deals 50% damage) that will trigger ALL on hit effects TWICE! Even your passive will be triggered by it which means that the second, smaller hit gives you a stack for your passive too.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

You want to start with this most of the time since you get every core item of yours out of longswords.
Actualy i never start with this, but it might be viable though i don't like it because it delays your core items. (Needs more testing)

Core Items

Your standard core items. Rush BOTRK first but don't hesitate to buy T1 boots in lane. You need them to stick on your enemies when they flee.
The more bruiserlike build. You will be pretty tanky while dealing good damage. Consider this build if your enemy is stronger than you or when you lost your lane.

Situational Items

Mercurial is so fucking underrated in lowelo :o If your enemy laner is AP and has a stun/snare RUSH THIS SHIT!!! Get Hexdrinker/Maw when the enemy team has 2 or more AP Champs.

VS

Medium

Fuck this yordle!

Summs: 3.png/4.png

This matchup relies heavily on the enemy. It can go for an easy farmlane or a heavy "go fuck yourself" lane. Wait lvl 2/3 (depends if you skilled "e" on 2 or 3) and engane in his Mega-Gnar WITHOUT undefined.png and see how he reacts. You should be able to easily dodge his stun and win the trade and then win every other trade. If he pokes you right of the start play safe until 6 and use your Q to dodge hos initial "w" Stun, then you are good to go and kill him.Stay away from walls, but this you should already know.

VS

Cho'Gath

Medium

Summs: 3.png/4.png

Skill matchup pre and post 6. If you manage to dodge his Q/W then you can kill him. If he hits you with it, you're done. His silence will interrupt your heal so keep that in mind.

Rush 3155.png because 3139.png won't cleanse his knockup.

Use 3.png to reduce his ultimatedamage.

VS

Darius

Medium

Summs: 3.png/4.png

Pre 6 and pre 3044.png you have the advantage. Even though Darius is a Juggernaut, he is fairly squishy before he gets his Phage so abuse that. If he grabs you instantly rethink your position: Are there many enemy minions? Get out. Are there almost none/will you kill them with alphastrike.png? Fight and kill him. He stacks his damage way slower than you. If he gets Phage just wait for 6 and fight him.

Post 6 it depends on how well your lane went. Equal? Go for the bruiserbuild but rush 3053.png soon enough to counter his Ult. If you went ahead of him go for damage items and kill him before he has the chance to stack 5 bleeds on you. Use 3.png when he is about to stack the last stack on you. That way you will reduce his dariusexecute.pngdamage.

VS

Fiora

Hard

Summs: 3.png/4.png

Pre 6 her early is stronger than yours and you need to be very careful. Try to lure her into your minions and then 3.png and fight her. If you don't have 3.png you should not even think of fighting her outside your wave.

Post 6 it becomes somewhat equal. When your lane went even she will kill you when you both use your ultimates. Try to force hers and then get away from her while she chases you. Re engage 1 or 2 seconds before it goes off and fight her with your ultimate. She won't stand a chance. If you can't outrun her Ult be careful and don't let her trigger your vitals, else she will deal to much damage.

VS

Gangplank

Easy

Summs: 14.png4.png

Pre 6 it is a skillmatchup. If he tries to hit you with his barrels, try to alphastrike.png him in return to avoid the barrel damage and engage on him. If he hits his barrels try to heal up and don't get hit again because they hurt ALOT!

Post 6 he is just a bigger minion if he pushes to far. So let him push and then go for him.

Don't take exhaust because he can remove it.

VS

Garen

Hard

Nope. No way you will win this if the Garenplayer is not braindead.

VS

Illaoi

Medium

Summs: 3.png/4.png (I know i said "get ignite when the enemy has a lot of selfheal but not this time. If she hits you while she used ult you are dead anyway)

Pre 6: You both suck at manamanagment. Dodger her illaoiQ.png and illaoiE.png at all times and wither her mana down. She will run out quickly. If she is not using her skills wait for an opportunity to engage on her. You can beat her ONLY if you dodger he Q and E which will require some skill when you are in meleerange and fighting.

Post 6: Well, as stated above: If you fight her in her ult you are dead and there is no way to prevent that. Engage on her and force her ult and then get the fuck off. Her ult has only a limited range so just wait and then re engage and kill her. Without her ult she can not defeat you when you have yours.

VS

Irelia

Easy

Summs: 3.png or 14.png/4.png (though i prefer exhaust because she is pretty predictible so you can deny most of her damage easy)

Pre 6 only has her stun. Most Irelias will last hit a minion near you with ireliagatotsu.png and then hit you with ireliaequilibriumstrike.png. Abuse that if she went to deep into your minions! Exhaust her and beat the living shit out of her and she will never recover from that and you are free to freeze the lane.

Post 6 is the same as pre 6. Bait her stun and then kill her but DO NOT fight her in a minion wave, else she will heal up pretty good and you wont kill her.

VS

Jarvan IV

Hard

Summs: 3.png/4.png

Pre 6: He will wreck you. He is tanky as fuck and he deals damage like a truck. Farm and play save, there is no way you will win a fight. Except for the usual rule when he overextends and jumps into your minions when you have exhaust, then you will kill him or force Flash. DO NOT use this "combo" when he has his jarvanivdemacianstandard.png/jarvanivdragonstrike.png combo else he will just escape and you will have wasted your important exhaust.

Post 6 i would rank him easy actually. Dodge his Engage (either E/Q or R) and you are free to kill him.

VS

Jax

Hard

Same as Garen: Nope.

VS

Jayce

Easy

Summs: 3.png/4.png

Pre 6: Somewhat even. He can be ranged so he might poke you with basics. Try to not let that happen to often. Stay behind your minions to evade his Q poke. If you want to fight him DO NOT use your Q, else he will just knock you back and thats it. Do it without and if he knocks you back, 3.png and alphastrike.png him to close the gap.

Post 6: Same as before. use your 3153.png to slow him, run towards him and when he knocks you back use Exhaust, Q and then Ult to kill him.

VS

Kayle

Hard

Summs: 3.png/4.png

Pre 6 you will be dead whenever you make a mistake or you wil be so low you don't even try to CS so be extremely safe.

Post 6 depends on how well your early went. If you are equal to her you MIGHT kill her, but most of thetime she will use her Ult to get away and she will because you are to damaged to follow up. Rush Hexdrinker.

VS

Malphite

Hard

Summs: 12.png/4.png

Pre 6 you can't kill him but he can kill you easily. His entire kit makes you whine and hate him and there is no way to outplay that unless he is braindead. His Q pokes you on range and when you try to get near him, he will slow your attack speed and hit your face with rocks. (Funny becaus he is a rock... joke... haha... Ok, not so funny)

Post 6 is more in your favour but most likely you will just force his Ult or flash and thats it. If he has neither one of them you can kill him easily with your ult since neither his Q slow or E slow will work on you. If he does have anything of that up just look for a good chance to TP gank your botlane.

VS

Nasus

Easy

Summs: 14.png or 3.png/4.png

This guy is no threat pre or post 6 unless you gave him kills and were afk so he can stack. Whenever he goes in for a Q Stack hit his Face until he is so low he either has to recall or just stand there not even trying to CS. If he does try though engage on him but keep in mind that his wither.png affects you pre 6. Post 6 he can't do anything to stop you from killing him.

VS

Nautilus

Hard

Summs: 12.png/4.png

Pre and post 6 you can not defeat him when you are not ahead by far. He is tanky and still deals tons of damage which you can't counter with exhaust or ignite. Walk up on him or fake going for CS to bait out his E and quickly walk away so you dont get damage from it and force him to push. This is your only chance to farm under your turret. He will become way to tanky even for Master Yi to handle so pick TP and try to do some ganks with it.

VS

Olaf

Medium

Summs: 4.png/14.png

Pre 6 you are both equal. Wait for him to use his olafrecklessstrike.png to last hit and then try to do a short trade because without his E he won't deal that much damage. Just be patient and wait for him to make his move.

Post 6 this guy will beat the shit out of you. If you went equal with gold than it is still equal. If you want to fight him wait for his E and then go all in on him. Use your 14.png when he reaches 40% to deny his stupid selfheal and then watch while you both basicaly just hit each others face.

VS

Pantheon

Medium

Summs: 3.png/4.png

King of Toplane, at your sevice!

Pre 6 he will destroy you in lane. His poke is insane and since you don't onehit his casterminions before 4 there is no way you can trade back.

Post 6 on the other hand is way in your favour. If there breaks a fight between you two you will win by far. Try to dodge a Q from him with your own Q to deny some damage from him before you fight him.

VS

Poppy

Medium

Summs: 14.png or 3.png/4.png

Pre 6 you can beat her since she has no escape at all and you have more damage. Wait for her minions to die and/or for her to use her skills and you are good to go but be aware of her laning while you wait for the above things to happen. She can poke you easier than you can with her Q and may wither you down.

Post 6 you can just melt her. Her poppyparagonofdemacia.png can't stop your Q but you shouldn't use it to engage anyway. Use it when she uses her ult to knock you away and dodge it with your Q.

VS

Quinn

Medium

Summs:3.png/4.png

Pre 6 she beats you in every way possible. Her range harass is so strong and her AA-E-AA combo hurts so much you will cry. Try to farm and stay calm, post 6 will be in your favour.

Post 6 two things will happen: She won't be there anymore because she roams (very good for you) or she will stay on lane which still sucks, but with Exhaust and your ult you can kill her when she overextends on you.

VS

Renekton

Hard

Summs: 3.png/4.png

Phew... Why would you do this matchup anyway?

Pre 6 he beats the shit out of you (wrote this sentence a lot, hm?) and you have to wait for him to overextend on you or just farm up. If you fight him pre or post 6 make sure there are no minions around. Your minions will heal him if he uses Q with 50+ Rage and his minions will deal damage to you which you definitely don't need when you fight a Renekton.

Post 6 is a little bit better for you since his Ult won't do as much as yours but the above is still a thing. Be very cautios when you fight him.

VS

Riven

Medium

Summ: 3.png/4.png

Actually this matchup is pretty easy BUT you will die if you make a mistake. If you don't she is freefarm.

Pre 6 you can outtrade her when you use your Q to dodge her third 3which is pretty easy to be honest since she is predictible and her Q animation is slow enough. (Her third q will deal more damage than her W so it is important you dodge the Q!)

Post 6 you have to wait for her to engage when you are equal on lane. If you are ahead you can walk up to her and start fighting but don't forget to use your Q to dodge her third Q. Use Exhaust when you are at ~60% health to reduce her Windslashdamage and overall damage.

VS

Rumble

Medium

Summs: 3.png/4.png

Never fight him without Exhaust unless you are far ahead.

Pre 6 you can't realy fight him but neither can he. Play safe and focus on farming unless you see a good chance to engage on him.

Post 6 you can kill him (with exhaust!) When you fight him and there are minions near, wait for him to use his ult and then q to that minion. You will dodge the ult and maybe even deal damage with your q. Either way is fine as long as you don't stand in his ult.

Rush Hexdrinker.

VS

Teemo

Medium

Summs: 3.png/4.png

Pre 6 you are dead, just as every other AA reliant Champion. Let him push, farm safely as good as possible.

Post 6 is your game IF you manage to do the one damn fucking job you have: DODGE HIS BLIND WITH YOUR Q!!!! If you manage to do that instantly pop exhaust and ult and KILL THIS FUCKING FUCKER!!!

Rush Hexdrinker since even without his Blind he will deal a serious amount of damage to you when you fight him. Try not to walk into any shrooms though.

VS

Trundle

Easy

Summs: 3.png/4.png (Ignite would be a good choice too, but since he will stand in his snowzone you are better of with exhaust.)

First of all: Since Yi relies more on attack speed than on actual damage his Q won't hurt you that much and since you aren't tanky, his lifedrain from ult is not that good against you.

Pre 6 you either need to kill him fast or just farm up. He will outsustain you because his sustain is passive while you need your mana. In a straight up fight you should win but wait for him to use his Q on a minion if possible.

Post 6 you are stronger but use Exhaust unless you are way ahead of him. Since he has no real escape he can't run from you that well but he could knock you up and run from you with increased movementspeed in his snowzone. Try to safe your Q for that so you can catch up.

VS

Tryndamere

Medium

Summs: 3.png/4.png

Pre 6 its just gambling. If he lands a crit on you, bad luck. If not: Good luck. Try to scare him by being overly agressive. As long as his Ragebar does not fill up you deal more damage but if he fills his rage you have to be very careful. He can either heal himself up or crit you to death (or not, gambling).

Post 6 you have an advantage: Your ult enhaces your combat abilitys while his only makes him survive a few seconds. Keep your exhaust for his ult and then keep your distance until it goes off, then kill him. Again: try not to fight him with his ragebar filled!

VS

Vladimir

Medium

Summs: 14.png or 3.png/4.png

Pre 6 he outsustains you by far and he can poke you easier than you can poke him. If you want to fight him wait for your Q to get to rank 2, then engage on casterminions to oneshot them and come closer to him. He may pool back now or fight you, either way is fine for you because you will deal more damage. Wait for his emporewed Q to go away and then engage.

Post 6 is pretty easy. Go and kill him.

Rush Hexdrinker

VS

Volibear

Hard

Summs: 14.png/4.png

Pre 6 he is tankier than you and deals more damage. Avoid being thrown into his minions at all costs else you will get realy much damage. Avoid trades too, just farm but try not to use your Q. Voli can't clear waves as good as you and therefore you will push him under his turret where your chances to farm or kill are 0.

Post 6 you have more damage, use your Ignite when his passive triggers and you should be fine.

General: Why Exhaust and how to lane Back to Top

Why Exhaust and why Top?

Yis defense is realy poor and even the few points in resolve don't fully make up for that and that is why i chose exhaust in most of my matchups. It reduces incoming damage on you (so basicaly enhaces your defense) while it allows you to deal more damage and catch up. It has way more uses than Ignite for Yi and is the reason why he is so strong on top. The lane is long enough to chase the enemy who will run most of the time when you use Highlander and exhaust makes sure you will catch and kill them. In a straight fight where your enemy won't run it helps you to win those fights almost 100% since your enemy will melt in mere seconds and half of that time they will be exhausted. Either at the beginning when they use their burst or at the end when they try to finish you with their ults. Ignite only deals some damage and reduces selfheal, that is not helping at all.

Yi top is a (so far) very unknown pick and most people don't know how to play against him. They either are insecure or overextend and that is when you use exhaust to punish them hard. This guide won't work for higher elo probably, but for lower elo it is an extremely good way to climb at least to gold.

Early:

11.png on lane is somewhat hard to get used to. You are straight forward with no real escape, your early damage is not that good and you lack defense/mana. Therefore you have to play reactive most of the time and plan every skill you want to use accordingly. Try to bring some AA on your enemy while he last hits but back of immediately. Focus on last hits and don't use your Q to farm for several reasons: It has a high mana cost and will suck you dry realy fast and you push the lane. Only use it to dodge an engage or start an engage by yourself once you onehit caster minions with it. Most of the time you should be using Exhaust and you should be using it often on lane. When you have to fight use it! You will win most trades and scare your enemy, but once they have more health than you and you dont have exhaust, you will lose most trades when you missuse your Q to dodge. Use your W to heal you after a bad trade to get another chance to fight and farm.

Midgame:

Once you get your Ultimate most matchups are in your favour and you should make use of that. Play agressive and engage on your enemy whenever you see a good chance. Highlander has a relatively short CD so don't be afraid to use it. With your ult you can win almost every 1v1 and 1v2 too if you make good use of your Q and W. Try not to use Q to engage when your enemy has good escape tools but if you have to use Q, always make sure you clear the caster minions while you hit him too with it.

Lategame:

Unlike Jungle Yi, you will be splitpusher now. You can push insanely fast with your Q and since you are Yi you will kill most enemys that try to stop you. If you see more enemys approaching than you can handle just run away. You have a high base movementspeed + your items will add more to that and even when that is not enough you can use your ult to get away safely. Try to get their topjungle if you have to wait for your minions and ward it. You may be able to ambush someone in the jungle who comes for you to defend their turrets.
