Summoner Spells Back to Top

I'll always take flash top lane, because it is needed for escaping from ganks, or even just from bad fights.

Exhaust is better against squishies and bruisers than tanks, because they do more damage and the armor/mr reduction is more effective. Therefore, I'll take TP against tanks and exhaust against anyone that isn't a tank.

Masteries Back to Top

My masteries will also vary depending on the matchup, although this page is good against almost anything you'll see top lane. Siegemaster is better against the odd top lane mage, who will not do much of their damage through auto attacks. You can also take fresh blood against easy matchups, although they are quite rare for yi top.

Your max order should vary depending on the situation. For example, you can also take 2 early points in meditate at any point if you feel that you cannot win your lane and that you need the extra sustain (which is actually quite significant) to survive. If you're for some reason full health and still have your pot, you can go for 2 points in e at level 3. If you were chunked to a very low health at level 2 and do not want to trade, you should take meditate at level 2.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

This is my go-to start every game.
Get this if you have no hope of winning your lane. Pretty much only pantheon.

Core Items

    Always my first buy.
Either buy this second or third (Not counting boots).
Usually my 4th/ Sometimes 5th buy. (Not counting boots).

Situational Items

If you don't need mercurial scimitar or armor pen.
Take this unless the enemy has minimal stuns/snares/suppressions.
Mercs against teams with hard CC (slows don't matter because yi is immune in ult). Tabi against auto attackers.
Mortal Reminder against self healers or healing supports. BC against some armor. LDR against way too much armor.
Take this if they have champions like Udyr or Singed that will try to outrun you.
Take this early against hard magic damage lanes. I complete Maw later as my last or second last item.
Example build against minimal CC/ little armor.
Example build against high CC/ some armor.

Keep in mind that you should always get AD before/ ASAP after you get PD or Shiv. For example. Bork > PD > Shiv > GA isn't the greatest build path because you have very little AD for the crit to multiply.

I usually get QSS early then finish Merc Scim as my last item. However, I will finish my Merc Scim early if I need the AD for the above mentioned reason, and if I have no other high AD items in my build.

AS boots will cap your attack speed if you have 3 AS items when you ult. I may sometimes get it if neither Merc Treads nor Ninja Tabi fit the situation and I only have 2 AS items, but this is very rare.

VS

Darius

Hard

The darius matchup will seem very hard in the early game, but you will outscale him later. In lane, keep in mind that his dariusaxegrabcone.pngis on a 24 second cooldown in the early game. You can also try to dodge his dariuscleave.png with alphastrike.png. The only level in the early game where you can somewhat reliably beat him is level 2.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Easy

From what I remember, you beat him quite easily in the early game. Just try to juke his infectedcleavermissilecast.png and build Mortal Reminder. He may be able to kill you during the mid-game before you build Mortal Reminder.

VS

Ekko

Medium

You can beat him easily pre-6 by dodging his ekkow.png with alphastrike.png. However, he becomes a pain in the ass to kill after level 6 because of his ult, and he may be able to kill you if he successfully waits out your highlander.png and wujustyle.png after he ults.

VS

Fiora

Hard

Pre-6, Fiora is pretty much guaranteed to win any trade in which she lands her fioraw.png because of the attack speed slow. She also has a bigger level 6 power spike than you do if you're dead even. However, you will easily kill her when you get 2 items, and the lane will be easier with BORK. Try not to let her easily hit her passive/ult, and farm for your item spikes.

VS

Fizz

Easy

You will beat Fizz very easily in the early game, and you will definitely be fine in the mid and late game if you dodge fizzr.png and meditate fizze.png. The only way he can win is if he gets ganks and snowballs.

VS

Galio

Easy

Trade with him when galiobulwark.png is down. You can also get an early 3140.png for his galioidolofdurand.png if you want.

VS

Gangplank

Easy

Very easy matchup against most gangplanks. However, it can be somewhat difficult against a good gangplank. You can dodge his gangplanke.png and gangplankqwrapper.png with your Q, and you run straight through his ulti's slow with your ult. Keep in mind that he can be faster than you, so 3153.png or 3144.png will be extremely useful.

VS

Garen

Medium

You beat him pre-6, but his level 6 power spike is stronger than yours. Don't fight him when you are the villain and before you get your item spikes.

VS

Gnar

Medium

You can try to chase him down when he is in mini-gnar because of your highlander.png. You should be able to outtrade him, but he actually does significant damage in mini-gnar. However, do not fight him when he is in mega-gnar unless he somehow misses every one of his stuns.

VS

Gragas

Hard

Not fun. He actually does quite a bit of damage and he has a lot of CC, so even when you get your items he can just disengage, and his gragasr.png is very difficult to dodge with your alphastrike.png. I suggest you just farm, and take solace in the fact that he doesn't have much kill pressure.

VS

Illaoi

Medium

This matchup has the potential to be very easy, and the potential to be very hard. You kind of need to be aggressive, because if you try to farm under tower she will take half your health with every wave with her illaoie.png and to a lesser extent her illaoiq.png. However, if you trade with her, you will win pre-6, and Illaoi has no escapes. Try to juke her illaoiq.png and illaoiw.png. This is probably the only matchup in which I'd take ignite, because you need the early damage and the grievous wounds. If you take ignite, Mortal Reminder is not necessary.

VS

Irelia

Hard

Pre-6, you can win trades if she uses ireliaequilibriumstrike.png before you use wujustyle.png. Unfortunately for you, her level 6 power spike is insane, and for the rest of the game you'll have trouble 1v1ing her. Exhaust and QSS may allow you to fight her in the late game, or if you somehow got very far ahead. Another way I've won this lane is when the dumbass playing her tried to fight me without ireliatranscendentblades.png.

VS

Jax

Hard

If you dodge his jaxcounterstrike.png, you can fight him. However, a good Jax will constantly vary the timing on his stun, and you cannot engage on him. The only way you're going to win is if he uses jaxleapstrike.png on you, then misses his jaxcounterstrike.png. He also has a bigger level 6 powerspike than you do.

VS

Jayce

Hard

Every Jayce will waste some of his cooldowns either by missing his skillshot or using it on the minion wave. That is your opportunity to trade, but beware of his jaycethunderingblow.png. Ideally, you should save alphastrike.png for this. You will outscale Jayce when you get your items.

VS

Malphite

Medium

You can fight malphite when he misses landslide.png in the early game. Even after 6, you can try to chunk him down low enough for you to ult and kill him after he misses landslide.png. However, you can also just play passively and farm in this lane because the only way Malphite is going to kill you is if you try to fight him, and he is quite tanky. Keep in mind that your highlander.png negates his attack speed slow.

VS

Maokai

Medium

You should be able to beat him pre-6. However, after that he will get progressively tankier and harder to kill. When you get 3153.png and an armor pen item, you should be able to easily 1v1 him.

VS

Nasus

Medium

Nasus is actually quite strong in the early game, it's just that he needs to use his main ability nasusq.png on the minions to get stronger. I suggest fighting him in the early game when his nasusq.png is on cooldown. After level 6 or so, Nasus will beat you, but you will outscale him because your highlander.png negates nasusw.png. In the late game, make sure not to highlander.png too early. 3033.png is also a good buy here.

VS

Nautilus

Easy

You should be able to pretty much beat him all game. Just make sure to alphastrike.png his nautilusgrandline.png and keep in mind that he has a bunch of shields with Courage of the Colossus and nautiluspiercinggaze.png.

VS

Olaf

Medium

Try to beat him on the all in when you reach your powerspikes and if he wastes his cooldowns. Be careful of his level 1 cheese with olafaxethrowcast.png.

VS

Pantheon

Hard

Just start 1054.png and go for 2 early points in meditate.png. You can try to alphastrike.png his pantheonq.png, but that may lead to you missing more CS, and especially don't do that if it will push the wave. Don't fight him early unless you get a gank.

VS

Poppy

Hard

This matchup depends entirely on your ability to avoid walls so she cannot hit her poppye.png. If you take smart trades and alphastrike.png her poppyr.png, you should be good.

VS

Quinn

Hard

Quinn's harass will hurt, and you won't be able to do much because she can quinne.png whenever you engage on her, and a decent Quinn will harass you while your cooldowns aren't up. You should only try to kill her either when you get 3153.png so she can't kite you easily, or if you manage to get behind her or surprise her from the brush. Try to save alphastrike.png for her escape if possible.

VS

Rammus

Medium

Get 3153.png and 3036.png ASAP; you can even get 3036.png as your first item. You can fight him around then because Rammus has no good escapes. Fight him whenever his defensiveballcurl.png is off pre-6. Afterwards, refrain from fighting until you get items. Also get 3140.png for his puncturingtaunt.png if you want to focus other people on the team. The people that think Rammus counters Yi mid-late game are the people who don't know how to itemize.

VS

Renekton

Hard

If you go in for a trade, save your wujustyle.png until after he stuns you. After level 2, he will probably beat you until you get your item powerspikes. Be aware that he is very slippery with renektonpreexecute.png and renektonsliceanddice.png, and if you're planning to 1v1 him you should probably save alphastrike.png for his renektonsliceanddice.png

VS

Rengar

Hard

Try to stay on the bottom side of the lane so that he cannot easily jump on you. 3153.png is very useful because of his rengarw.pngthat makes him hard to chase.

VS

Riven

Hard

You can actually win early fights if she engages on you if you outplay her by using alphastrike.png on her third riventricleave.png. However, keep in mind that engaging on her (with alphastrike.png as your initiator) is almost certainly going to end badly for you when she gets 3 abilities, though this is a bit less true if you walk up to her. Riven's powerspike when she gets rivenfengshuiengine.png is massive and should not be taken lightly. Always use alphastrike.png to dodge her knockup, and try to meditate her second rivenfengshuiengine.png.

VS

Rumble

Easy

If you take a sufficient amount of MR and take smart trades, you can beat him all game. You run through his rumblecarpetbomb.png slow with highlander.png, but avoid walking over it too much because of the damage. He can't escape you when you get 3153.png.

VS

Shen

Medium

Shen is actually pretty strong early. Try not to engage on Shen, because he can just shene.png away. When he uses shenw.pngmeditate.png and definitely save wujustyle.png for after it expires. When you get items, Shen cannot do anything 1v1. Mid-Late game, you can engage on Shen, but save alphastrike.png for shene.png and do not chase him under tower, because of shenw.png.

VS

Singed

Hard

Get 3022.png so that he cannot escape you. In the early game, you can try to take smart trades and stay out of his poisontrail.png, but you're quite unlikely to kill him. When he uses fling.png on you, you can alphastrike.png back to him or to a minion.

VS

Sion

Medium

This matchup depends entirely on your ability to dodge his sionq.png with alphastrike.png, or to just juke his sione.png and run out of his sionq.png. If you cannot consistently dodge his sionq.png pretty much every time, you need to just wait for items before you can fight him. If he tries to use sionr.png as an escape, you can try to alphastrike.png on him and spam clicks in the direction he is going.

VS

Teemo

Hard

You can try to fight him in the early game when his blindingdart.png is on cooldown. Get 3364.png ASAP for his teemorcast.png. Save wujustyle.png for after his blindingdart.png is over, and when you are blinded, you can meditate.png if he is not running away.

VS

Trundle

Hard

Trundle is actually quite hard to 1v1 in the late game because of trundlepain.png, and it pretty much comes down to whether or not you're fed enough to kill him before his regen heals him for half the damage you deal. You can abuse his trundledesecrate.png cooldown in the early game, but just run away with highlander.png when he uses trundlepain.png before you get items. 3033.png will help.

VS

Tryndamere

Hard

Pre-6, you can fight him when his fury bar is very low or empty. Don't even think about fighting him afterwards unless 3.png is up and you have items. If that is the case, run away with highlander.png when he uses undyingrage.png, because he cannot slow you. LMB click on him so you know exactly when it ends. If for some reason you don't have ult and he hits his tryndamerew.png, just meditate and pray that he doesn't crit every time.

VS

Yasuo

Medium

Before you get items, only fight this guy when he has no minions to yasuodashwrapper.png to, and he has just used his third yasuoqw.png. It's counterintuitive, but your minions will deal much more harm than good because he will kite you until your wujustyle.png and highlander.png run out and you will be useless. 3140.png will cancel his yasuorknockupcombow.png

VS

Yorick

Easy

Yorick should be quite easy to beat pre-6 and after you get 3153.png. You can alphastrike.png out of his yorickw.png.

Trading Back to Top

Against a melee champion, your ideal trade would be to wujustyle.png + masteryipassive.png+alphastrike.png and then just auto attack until your wujustyle.png runs out. However, you obviously shouldn't trade against some champions like 80.png that will beat you everytime you try.

Against a ranged champion, you should alphastrike.png+wujustyle.png+masteryipassive.png in chronological order. Bad players will be surprised by your damage and hang back, but good players will start harassing the hell out of you now that your only engage is down.

Unless you know you'll win, you should refrain from trading until one of the enemy's cooldowns are down. You can also trade when the enemy goes for a CS, because they will either have to fight you or miss the CS. This applies more so to the cannon minion than the others.

Splitpush, Splitpush, and keep Splitting Back to Top

When you splitpush, you're

A. Getting stronger by CSing and getting more levels than your teammates
B. possibly preventing the enemy team from grouping
C. possibly forcing the enemy team into something brash because they feel forced into taking a bad 5v4.

If the champions that are missing on the enemy team can fight you, you should back off and either wait in the brush or start farming the jungle. Obviously, this means that you can splitpush more liberally when you are ahead and can 1v1 anyone on the enemy team.

Many enemies will be surprised that you can so easily dive them, even in high elo, although knowledge of which enemies you can dive and which you cannot can only come with experience. 3140.png will help immensely when diving. Make sure you keep track of the enemy's items. You don't want to dive them just to learn that they had 3157.png too late. Also, if the tower is low enough and the enemy does not deal sufficient damage, you can highlander.png, take the tower, then kill them. This is most effective against tanks.

I play pretty much only master yi on twitch.tv/vdud3. I'm a jungle main but I also play top yi quite a bit.
