Summoner Spells Back to Top

4.png is a very standard spell for almost all champions, and Mordekaiser is no exception. Take it in all situations.

14.png is what I take 98% of my games. This spell helps snowball your lead, add damage to your ult, shut down those pesky heals, and still has major uses during teamfights, so I highly recommend this spell to mid and top lane (especially mid)

12.png is mainly a top lane spell, as mid lane isn't far away to walk back to, unlike top. Alternately, you can bring this if you're in a losing lane. Not only that, but taking Teleport may also be used to teleport to dragon pit and take dragon, because unlike mid lane, top is very far away from the dragon pit, and securing dragon as Mordekaiser is crucial to his success. Therefore, you would usually pick Teleport

3.png & 6.png are spells that I personally don't use very often, but I can see their uses, but these spells are most likely very situational.

Masteries Back to Top

Deathfire Touch is the reason why Burnkaiser exists, so this is why I go down the ferocity page. Stormraiders is very good on him, but then you shouldn't be playing Burnkaiser because of how much damage his ult deals with DFT.

[OLD INFO; UPDATED SECTION BELOW]

Sorcery because he's a caster and has extremely low base attack speed.

Expose Weakness may seem a bit weird, but it is currently the best one out of the three imo. Fresh Blood doesn't do much at all for him, unless you're against a melee with not too much mobility (outside of Yasuo). Feast may seem good because his abilities cost him health, but the health you gain from your w should be way more then enough. Expose weakness makes it so that the target that you ulted will now take more damage from your allies, and half of your abilities are aoe, making the entire team take more damage from your teammates, and that's good.

Vampirism and Natural talent are both pretty good, as he has great scalings, but I tend to go for vampirism due to the fact that the extra sustain is usually better then the 15 ad and 10 ap.

Double edge sword for the edge (see what I did there xd) in your early game, as always having the 5% extra damage from the start is very good as it can give you even more of a shield. His shield is also the reason why taking the 2.5% extra damage won't matter as much, although bounty hunter is also a good choice if you're against a ranged bully like Lux or Xerath.

Piercing Thoughts because all of his abilities deal magic damage.

Deathfire Touch because it adds 20 ticks on top of his ult. Once late game comes, this will add around 600 extra damage if you're building a deathcap. This is a must have on Burnkaiser no matter your playstyle.

Next, there is the cunning tree, as we are a damage dealer.

Savegery to help secure cs, and wanderer is bad due to his pitiful 325 base movement speed.

Assassin because he's a solo laner, and having the extra damage always helps. Biscuits could be taken instead if you're against a ranged bully, or if you're not confident in your matchup.

Merciless because we don't use mana.

I think Dangerous Game is probably the best mastery compared to the other two. Mid lane usually doesn't have accessible brushes, unlike top lane. Bandit could work, but that would mean consistently autoing the laner, and it doesn't have much use late game.

[UPDATED INFO]

I found myself liking a slightly more tanky approach to his masteries, so I made some edits.

THE CHANGES:

Vamparism to Natural Talent: I recently found out that spell vamp is considered AoE with his q, so it's not worth it anymore.

Double-Edged Sword to Battle Trance: Like stated above, I'm starting to prefer a slightly less squishy version of Burnkaiser, so DES has to go. Besides, it's easy to get max stacks of battle trance as morde, however bounty hunter is no means bad, it's just that I tend to kill only around 2-3 opponents each game, so it's not as good as battle trance imo.

Converted cunning masteries to the resolve tree.

Recovery: Morde's health regen is garbage, so a flat increase to it is great, and I barely have any resistances to justify unyielding to recovery.

Tough Skin: I tend to push a ton, so siegemaster is not as good. Explorer isn't bad, but I like my tiny damage reduction a little more.

Runic Armor: Morde's passive is a shield, and he can heal a ton with his w, so this is worth more than a measly 50 hp buff.

Insight: Summoner spell cdr is very nice as morde is reliant on flash for escape/engage, and ignite for the extra ult damage, and having them up slightly faster is always nice. Perseverance is bad because it increases a percent amount of health regen, and we all know by now that morde has really low health regen value, so it would barely increase it. Fearless can a good option against poke/bully champs, but I usually prefer my summ spell cdr.

[OLD INFO, READ FOR MORE INFO ON THE CHAMP]

I start w, and max w because this is a very good shield generator, and the more you rank it up, the more you get healed from the second cast of w, which at rank 5, it can heal for a massive amount when there is a champ inside the radius.

I usually start e second, but I max this spell last. Since this is his only ranged spell he can use on cs, I pick it up to either get faraway cs, or generate a good shield by poking the enemy with this, as you get a certain percentage amount of shield when you strike a champ with it. Leveling this ability usually isn't worth it, as his other abilities gain so many more benefits from leveling up, but you can max this if you're really struggling with a matchup, and you desperately need that instant shield boost. Otherwise, you max it last.

I usually start q last, but I max is second because of its insane damage that increases a lot each time you rank it. The cooldown also massively decreases when you rank it, from 10 seconds to 4 seconds without any CDR.  The total AD ratio also increases, adding on even more damage, even without building any AD.

Ult at 6, 11, and 16 because Burnkaiser's main ability is this, and ranking it whenever you can is very important.

[RECENT INFO]
Start w almost all the times, and max it almost all the times as well. However, e max can be viable against bully or long range opponents as you generate more shield if you can hit them with it.

I'm starting to max e more often now as I began to realize that q doesn't get much of an upgrade (10 base damage, bonus ad ratio and cdr every rank) compared to his e (30 base damage, more %shield generation, and cdr every rank). This also amplifies his e-ult-ignite combo earlier, which has netted me a ton of kills. However, against easy laners and hard melee champs, q max can still work as the cdr gets a lot shorter each rank compared to his e.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

What I start 95%. This offers great sustain from pots, and can occasionally help you snowball. I don't go doran's ring because mordekaiser doesn't use mana, and this gives him more useful stats.
You can start this if your laner have reallly great range, and can hard bully you, such as Teemo or Lux. The health regen means that you can sustain in lane even more on top of w.
I like to start this in easy matchups, as this gives you the most damage and will help you build your liandries a lot quicker.

Core Items

These three items are an absolute must, as these items combined will make his ult hurt way more than it should. I usually rush liandries first, but if you care about your team way more, you could rush rylais first, although I don't really recommend it. I usually upgrade boots last out of these items, as the rylais adds so much more damage, and gives you some chase potential, which I find to be more valuable then some movement speed and some magic pen. If you want, you can exchange boots late game for another item.

Situational Items

This item may seem weird, but this item offers 20% CDR, which makes your low cooldowns even lower, which could save someone's life considering morde can indirectly give heals to his allies. The main reason you would go this is for grievous wounds.
I believe that building this is entirely up to preference between this and morrelo. Gunblade gives some nice sustain, and has a great active that can add onto his already great damage. And unlike rylais, this gives a 40% slow, so you can actually chase the enemy. The 40 ad is nice for the additional q damage, but I usually never build this on Burnkaiser because I love the 20% cdr and the grievous wounds that morrelo offers.
This is what I usually build after morrelo. Ludens give you some minimal, but still useful movement speed, but we don't build it for the movement speed. The passive from ludens can be procced twice if you move around and auto after you ult someone, which adds around 300 bonus damage late game.
These are usually my last items, but I tend to lean towards deathcap because he is a mage after all, and this adds a ton of damage to his ult and dft. If you really need defensive items however, deathcap can be replaced by either banshees or zhonyas depending on enemy damage type.

How do you play Burnkaiser? Back to Top

But you all might be asking me "How do I actually play Burnkaiser?"
Well, the answer is that he is relatively simple to pick up, as his skills don't have some hidden mechanics that takes years to master (except maybe his w).

But first, you should know what his abilities do. If you know his abilities, then skip this part, otherwise please read this. This will be a brief description of his abilities, from his passive, to his ultimate.

mordekaiserpassive.png 25% of ability dmg dealt is converted to a shield, up to 25% of max hp can be a shield. After 25% of his shield has been made, gaining more amounts of the shield will decay back to 25% of the shield bar

mordekaisermaceofspades.png Massive auto enhancer, with 3rd auto dealing the most damage

mordekaisercreepingdeathcast.png You place a circle onto a minion, ally, ghost, or yourself. If placed onto something else, you gain bonus movement speed when walking towards the target with the circle. When the circles touch each other, DoT is applied for up to four seconds, then triggers the second part of this ability. You can reactivate this ability early, or wait out the DoT duration to do a flat amount of dmg and heals for the same amount if it hurts an enemy. This ability can be used to shove wave, deny farm, save a teammate or yourself, or to get somewhere faster.

mordekaisersyphonofdestruction.png Ranged AoE poke that gives bonus shield percentage based on how many enemy champions he hits.

mordekaiserchildrenofthegrave.png Point and click 10 second DoT that marks the enemy, and (very slowly) restores some of your health based on the dmg this does. When the enemy is killed with this mark, they will become a ghost that Morde can control. Its passive lets you control dragon when you attack the dragon and within 10 seconds, your team kills the dragon

That's cool, but what do I do with him in each phase of the game?
Well, I'll see if I can answer that with these next few sections (will finish soon I hope).

Early game w/ Burnkaiser Back to Top

Early game is the simplest part of the game for him, as there isn't too much else to do yet, just farm, occasionally kill the enemy, and take their turret. Unfortunately, depending on your enemy, that can be either really easy, or pretty challenging. But, remember to be aware of the enemy's jungler as he'll probably gank you at least once since morde is gank bait.

Here are the general things I do in lane:

Shove lvl 1 with my w

Get lvl 2 first, then poke them with your e. By then, they might be able to hurt you a ton with their newly acquired ability, so be more careful around this point. Try not to shove as much, but you still can if the laner leaves early or the jungler is somewhere else.

If they're under 1/3 health and are still in lane for some reason, an e ignite might be able to take them down. Flash if necessary, as picking up early kills is important.

Repeat the same steps till lvl 6. This is when you can net kills a lot more easily with the help of ignite. This is also around the time when some mid laners start to roam. In most cases, it would be difficult to follow them as a lot of your power at this point is in your w, and it only damages when you cast it near you onto something else. So instead, I ping mia and start shoving hard. Even with his crap attack speed stat, he can get turrets pretty quickly because of his absurd wave clear and his auto reset in his q. If your jungler is ready for a drag, definitely help him, as a ghost drag is really helpful in sieges and skirmishes that might break out. I usually keep shoving waves until the mid game.

Thanks for taking your time to reading this! This is the first guide ever, so constructive criticism is appreciated. Don't take this guide too seriously however, as I am currently in silver right now, and this is just a different style of Mordekaiser that I'm having a ton of fun with, but I am trying to be a bit serious with this guide as I am currently attempting to climb with this build, and it's going better than I expected.

Update as of 9/21/17: Climbed to g2 right now, and going strong.

I'm currently updating match ups as I play games against them, so they won't be updated consistently
