Summoner Spells Back to Top

Hello, and welcome to my guide for Morgana!

Before we begin:

This is a guide, made to show and teach others how to play Morgana like I do.
What Masteries and Runes, why these?
What Keystone?
What items and which do you get first?
That and much more is what I will try to explain to all of you through this guide.
You might not agree with my play style, which is fine, you don't need to play like me if you do not want to.
For those who do or are curious, welcome!
Feel free to leave a comment or so, and feel free to ask me questions if there is something you do not understand, I will do my best to explain it to you.
Feel free to leave feedback, or tell me your own thoughts!

The guide will be updated with each patch, sometimes even in between, so be sure to check back here every once in a while!

Welcome, and enjoy my guide!

Summoner Spells:

4.png3.png

You need your Flash to either engage with your ultimate, or to flash away out of tricky situations, this spell is standard on almost all champions.
These are the standard summoner spells for supports. Exhaust helps you weaken the enemy ADC and reduce his damage output so your own ADC can either survive a trade or win the trade. This is because the spell lowers the Movement and Attack Speed by 30%, Armor and Magic Resist by 10 and their damage dealt by 40 for 2,5 seconds.

4.png14.png

You need your flash to either engage with your ultimate, or to flash away out of tricky situations, this spell is standard on almost all champions.
If someone else on your team already has Exhaust, or when you are up against a lane with a lot of sustain 16.png267.png37.png, you can take Ignite. It deals True Damage depending on your level for over 5 seconds, and it reduces healing received by those who are targeted by Ignite, making them heal less then normal and making your ADC able to kill them and perhaps snowball.
It is also a nice pick if there are a lot of champions like 36.png and 50.png in the team, as they heal a lot and depend on it more than others, so Ignite screws them up.
Always communicate well if you want and can take Ignite. It is an option, but I always run Exhaust.

New Runes Back to Top

Masteries Back to Top

You can go Masteries two ways, depending if you want to be more protective, or agressive.

Protective Masteries: 0-18-12 With Thunderlord's Decree as Keystone.

(you sacrifice damage and sustain for resistances.)

Cunning Tree

Wanderer: This is for the extra movement speed, either to roam or to get to lane fast.
Secret Stash: Best option, as for the other keystone you gotta be alone in lane or get buffs, which you don't.
Meditation: For the extra mana regen, as your tormentedsoil.png costs 130 mana at max rank.
Bandit: For the extra gold which you can always use so this mastery is never a waste.
Intelligence: For the extra cooldown reduction.
Thunderlord's Decree: For a little spark of damage. WindSpeakers Blessing is also possible to make your shield stronger, but this option is less common.

Resolve Tree

Unyielding: For bonus armor and magic resist.
Tough Skin: Against the ADC's basic attacks.
Runic Armor: To buff your shield a bit.
Insight: Now your summoner spells have more cooldown reduction, making you able to use them more often.

Agressive Masteries: 12-18-0 with Thunderlord's Decree as Keystone.

(You sacrifice resistances for damage and sustain.)

Ferocity Tree

Sorcery: Most damage comes from your spells which is why you take this one.
Feast: For sustain. Expose Weakness is also nice for your ADC.
Vampirism: Good for sustain. You'll want that in lane and it fits nicely with your passive.
Battle Trace: For extra damage in team fights.

Cunning Tree

Wanderer: This is for the extra movement speed, either to roam or to get to lane fast.

Skill level maxing order:

If you go for the damage:

soulshackles.png-----darkbindingmissile.png-----tormentedsoil.png-----blackshield.png

The real support route:

soulshackles.png-----darkbindingmissile.png-----blackshield.png-----tormentedsoil.png

Why level skills this way:

soulshackles.png

This is your ultimate. No matter what champion you play this is the skill that you always max first and put points in whenever you can. It deals a lot of damage and it slows the enemy, attaching chains to them. When you can stick to your enemy and the chains don't get broken, it does damage once more and stuns them for a bit. Damage increases with each rank.
The 4.png+soulshackles.png+3157.png combo is nice during team fights! Before you get 3157.png, always use blackshield.png before engaging.

darkbindingmissile.png

This skill deals a lot of damage, and, with each rank, the snare gets longer, up to a max of 3 seconds at maximum rank. This is insanely long, and it can easily mean the doom of the enemy. It still is a skill shot though so you got to aim it really well. This skill makes great for a set up for your tormentedsoil.png

tormentedsoil.png

This ability covers and curses quite a bit of ground, dealing magic damage over time based on the opponent's missing health. Meaning that the more health they miss, the stronger and more damage this skill does. This is a combo for a lot of damage output in a matter of seconds, even as a support: darkbindingmissile.png+tormentedsoil.png+Slow proc from 3116.png+ the damage tics from 3151.png.
This skill also complements your morganapassive.png really well, giving you some sustain in lane and during team fights.

blackshield.png

If you want to be the real support, max this skill before you max your tormentedsoil.png.
This skill has a ridiciously long Cooldown, that will get lower with each rank. As its rank increases, the shield will also get stronger, making it harder to break and so you are able to shield your allies from magic damage and CC for a while longer, and that might save their lives. A thing you can do is build 3174.png with either3504.png3222.png3107.png (or more) for an even stronger shield, as all these items heal you making your shields stronger.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Basic start. This is what you take in almost every match.
Start Coin when the enemy team has champs that you need to kite a lot. Also, the final upgrade of this helps you with your ult.

Core Items

The first core items. Try to get Frost Fang and Sightstone at the first back, and by the second back, build towards Frost Queens and finish your Boots.
Zhonya's is often a good second item, even more so when your team is behind. With this, you can stall enemies and teamfights, giving your team enough time to respond or get away.
Rylai's is often next on the to-buy-list. Good item, it gives health, AP, and a slow for not that much money, plus it will complement the last item of your build really well. If you don't like Rylai's, or if your team already has a lot of CC on its own, get Redemption instead, for the heal when needed.
My personal end build most of the time. It gives a lot of health and ap, so you're harder to take down and even do some damage. While Rylai's isn't as good as it was before, it still is a good item thanks to the stats and slow.

Situational Items

If you really wanna go supportive instead of helping to deal damage, these items are good options.

Items to build:

Core Items:

3092.png or 2301.png

Depending if you want more health or an extra item slot later on, pick one of these. I always go Frost Queen's myself, because of the spooky ghosts and so I can upgrade my Sightstone

2045.png

If you did not did not get Eye of the Watchers, get the upgraded Sightstone after you finished about 2 other items. (Not including the Frost Queen's)

3157.png

I personally build this later, but it still is a core item for Morgana. It can help you with your 4.png+soulshackles.png combo, or stall enemies when your team gets behind.

Damage items:

You build these Items for the extra damage.

3116.png

Less good after the nerf, but it will still help you a lot. Your tormentedsoil.png infects a big area, making it easy for the slow to proc and deal crazy damage combined with the next item.

3151.png

Combine this with your darkbindingmissile.png or the slow proc from 3116.png and you will deal a lot of damage over time, even more so to those who stack Health.

Support Items:

Don't want to deal damage, or your team already has enough of that and you wanna go real support? These items might be good picks.

3222.png

Gives Magic Resist, Cooldown Reduction and Mana Regen, nice stats for Morgana. Plus, thanks to the Heal and Shield power passive, your Blackshields get stronger. Its other passive works like a QSS, so it is an ideal buy against teams with a lot of CC and/or magic damage.

3107.png

A good item on basically any support. It gives a nice amount of Health, great Mana Regen and Cooldown Reduction. Gotta love the heal and its great range,  Plus, thanks to the Heal and Shield power passive, your Blackshields get stronger.

3190.png

Less viable than before the changes, it still makes a nice item thanks to the resistances it gives and its shield passive.

3060.png

Nice buy against a team with mixed attackers, as it gives a good chunk of armor, and its passive making it hard for mages to clear a certain minion with their skills.

3050.png

Armor, Ability Power, Cooldown Reduction, it is a nice item overall, and even better when you got an ADC that does not build more than two crit items.

3174.png

Ability Power, Magic Resist, Mana Regen AND Cooldown, all great stats for Morgana. Plus, this item compliments your blackshield.png really well, even more so when combined with 3504.png3222.png3107.png

3102.png

If you have trouble surviving the AP burst, this item may make your life easier.

VS

Alistar

Hard

Alistar is one of the harder champions to deal with, mainly because of his huge amount of CC, his tankiness, he has a heal and he becomes really hard to kill thanks to his ultimate, which is also the ultimate tool for him to set up tower dives, so even there you aren't safe.

What to do:

Keep your distance, and poke him, he is melee, you are ranged. Shield your ADC from his CC, and focus damaging his ADC. Always keep an eye on your ADC, so you can shield in time. Call for help when you can't fight him/his ADC

VS

Annie

Hard

High base damage, a stun and after sightsone, (if she gets it) she goes full damage. Not a fun lane as she blows through your shield rather easily.

What to do:

Keep an eye on her at all times to check if she has a stun or not, and be prepared to get flashed on once she has her ultimate. Try not to shield you or your ADC unless she goes for a stun, because if you do you'll be in real trouble.

Note about match ups... Back to Top

What I described in the match up section is my opinion and how I deal with certain enemies. If one is described as "easy" is doesn't mean it always is an easy lane, it is just I find this champion easier to deal with compared to others. But even a Soraka, a match up I consider "easy" with Morgana, can be a real pain, as it all depends on your skill level with Morgana, and that of the enemy with his/her champion.

Example:
I consider Soraka an "easy" match up, yet, if she aims right all the time, remembers my cooldowns and silences me at just the right times or when I don't expect it, this could still result in a difficult lane.
But the other way round is also possible.

I often consider Thresh a "hard" match up, as he has tons of CC and quite some damage himself, enough that my Blackshield cannot keep up. However, if the player is still new to Thresh, and misses his skills or does not use them right, this "hard" match up could turn into an "easy" one.

It all depends on your skill with Morgana and the opponent's skill with his/her champ.

About Me Back to Top

Hi! I am CrystalWolf, a League player from the Netherlands.

I made an account back in 2013, because a friend thought I would love the game, but since he forced it on me a little and explained nothing I never really played.
This was until 2015 or so, when a new friend of mine who also plays League calmly and quietly taught me how to play the game, how it works with runes and masteries, everything. Ever since then, I play League on an almost daily basis. I started with ARAM's, and started practicing on Summoner's Rift much later.
Despite that, I became GOLD V in season 5, and ended in GOLD III in season 6, because I had not enough time and focus to play due to private reasons. My friend told me if I had more time, I could have easily reached Platinum.
Oh well, better luck this season right?

I main the Support Role, but I also like to play ADC or Mid-Lane. Jungle is fun too but I still need to get used to the new changes. Sometimes I play Top, but only when I am playing solo as my friend loves the Top-Lane. My favorite champions are Nami and Ashe, but I play lots of others.

The guide is not completely done yet, so please be patient.

Why do I play Morgana? Back to Top

Good ADC's for Morgana Back to Top

Morgana's kit and CC make it easy to set up a trade or try-to-kill situation. These ADC's Combine for a deadly force when they are together with Morgana:

22.png

Ashe has a lot of damage of her own and not only that, thanks to her ashepassive.png her crits slow the enemy by a lot. Combine this with her enchantedcrystalarrow.png and your darkbindingmissile.png + soulshackles.png and the enemy better hope they get help or are able to flash away. The CC makes this lane very strong.

51.png

If you can communicate well with Caitlyn and if she isn't a complete fool, this is a dangerous lane to face. You can always trap and snare the enemy with your darkbindingmissile.png, and Caitlyn can follow your CC with her caitlynyordletrap.png, if timed right, and deal insane damage when she attacks the trapped enemy. To make things worse for your enemy, you can also use your 4.png + soulshackles.png to make getting away even harder.

222.png

The AOE damage on her rockets are annoying for her opponents to deal with, so they will most likely not stay behind their minions too much. When they stray of their path, snare them with darkbindingmissile.png and hopefully Jinx will follow with her jinxe.png. You can then use 4.png + soulshackles.png if needed to secure a kill.

429.png

She was always a rather strong ADC, very mobile and hard to hit with skill shots thanks to her kalistapassive.png, she is even stronger since she got buffed on her E, which now keeps stacking even when it is on cooldown. That makes her even more scary once she finished her 3085.png cause then she stacks at 3 targets at once. She can also make sure you don't have to 4.png into your opponent, as she will throw you at them (if you can aim well) with her kalistarx.png so you can blackshield.png + soulshackles.png right afterwards.

Morgana Things Back to Top

25.png25.png25.png25.png25.png25.png25.png25.png25.png25.png25.png

Questions people asked me what I personally think about Morgana:

Why do you like about Morgana?

Her CC and that you can build her in so many different ways. Burst, damage over time, support, tankier..

What is your favorite skill/ability?

Her soulshackles.png because of the two times damage tick if you stick to targets and the slow and snare.

What is your favorite skin?

Victorious Morgana (sadly I don't own it) Blackthorn Morgana and Exiled Morgana. I like the colors on Exiled Morgana a lot, and same goes for Blackthorn Morgana, though she also has a different walk animation and her spells are a different color.

What is your least favorite skin?

Sinful Succulence Morgana. It doesn't fit her, and I just find it so ugly, in game as well as in her splash.

Favorite ADC to lane with?

Those would be an ADC with CC like 22.png51.png222.png202.png

Enemy Supports do you play as Morgana against?

Those would be supports like 12.png53.png89.png111.png412.png.
You can blackshield.png to make some skills useless, which makes it harder for the enemy laners to trade or fight back.

What Mastery Level are you?

Level 6
