Summoner Spells Back to Top

4.png is mandatory: quick repositioning, surprise hooks, escape.

14.png for kill pressure and high sustain champions like 50.png or 8.png.

3.png against AD assassins and (fed) AD Carries. Also useful for shortly disabling mobile target or peeling for teammates.

12.png always fine if you want to farm passively and/or gank side lanes a lot.

Masteries Back to Top

For Season 6, 18/0/12 is my way to go.

Ferocity Tree

  • Sorcery > Fury for more ability & spell damage. Important for burst mages.
  • DES for more damage, but no risk, no fun.
  • Oppressor is best with your passive stun or your ult. Bounty Hunter only for jungler (ganks).
  • Piercing Thoughts: you deal more magic than physical damage
  • Deathfire Touch > all.

Resolve Tree

- Recovery for sustain in lane
- Explorer for faster side lane ganking (Tough Skin brings about 0 effect)
- Runic Armor is okay-ish if you decide to max W first for passive laning. Otherwise Veteran's Scars makes you slightly more tanky (permanently).
- Insight is the best option for any "squishy" mage. You can flash more often. Only under 20% health, Perseverance is actually effective. But in this case, you should rather recall - or you will die.

Alternative Cunning Tree Skill Path

alt_masteries.png

12/18/0 is also fine for a burst-oriented playstyle (assassin Naut hehe).

Normally, you'll want to max E first for lowered cooldown and increased damage.

You can max Q first, but your waveclear and team fight damage will be lackluster (E has a really low cooldown).

If you decide to just farm (not recommended), max W as your first spell.

At level 1, pick W in order to mitigate most (or all) level 1 poke.

Update (6.16): Depth Charge now knocks up ALL secondary targets hit as well as well as stuns them for 1/1.5/2 seconds!

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

    Sustain Start
    Aggressive start (my favourite)
    Hyper-aggressive start (going for mejais)

Core Items

    Core Items
    health and ap.

Situational Items

If you want/need; they are acceptable - Lich Bane can be strong actually
Maybe a defensive item for the last slot?

Items Explanations

Start and first back

Normally, you want to start with 2033.png for best sustain, but since the Big Daddy already has all-in potential at level 3, starting with 1056.png is totally fine.
Your best 1st item is 3285.png, so aim for a 1058.png (1250g) or at least a 3113.png (850g) for your first back. Alternatively, get a 3057.png (1050g) for 3100.png.

If you want to play hyper-aggressive and started with 1082.png, then your first item will probably be 3041.png (grants up to 25 stacks since patch 5.22).

Core Items

3020.png or 3158.png?
it's up to your personal preference if you take burst over CDR for sustain damage. (Lucidity boots also reduce summoner spell cooldowns by 10%.)

3285.png
AP, movement speed, additional burst - what else could you possibly wish for? Best item for the Big Daddy.

3157.png
Your core defensive item. You're melee and hardly mobile. This will often save your life. Also grants AP and armor, which is nice against AD assassins and marksmen. Grants 10% CDR since 6.9.

3089.png / 3041.png
Overall heavy damage increase. Always nice to have.

3135.png
Magic Penetration like on most AP Assassins / Mages.

Situational Items

3116.png
Grants AP and Health which is both nice, but you don't really need the passive since Big Daddy is the CC machine anyway.

3027.png
Better than 3116.png, because it also grants mana. Especially good, if you're not building any mana regen.

3030.png
Viable replacement for 3027.png. Grants similar stats, has the same passive and an areal slow which also deals damage. New in 6.9.

3100.png
Quite strong actually, works well together with your passive.

3001.png
Only good if the enemy team has at least two mages/AP carries.

3151.png
Some additional HP, AP and magic penetration. The passive isn't that strong on Big Daddy.

3165.png
For AP and Mana. Doesn't give mana regen anymore since 6.9.

VS

Ahri

Medium

Difficulty: 5/10 - 8/10

Can go either way; it's a skill matchup. Most important thing is to dodge her ahriseduce.png.
If she has her ahritumble.png up, don't bother chasing her. Sometimes, you predict where she moves with it, if you land a hook, you can kill her with your combo.

VS

Akali

Medium

Difficulty: 4/10 - 6/10

A rather easy matchup, if you don't get baited with her akalismokebomb.png, especially in a gank.
Your burst is higher than hers, just be careful not to be around when you are low, she can easily towerdive.

VS

Anivia

Hard

Difficulty:  7/10 - 10/10

Really difficult to come close to her. The difficulty comes down to wether she hits her flashfrost.png. If she does, you're fucked. If she doesn't, stomp her. Careful of her passive though.

VS

Annie

Medium

Difficulty: 5/10 - 8/10

If she lands her stun, pray to the gods she doesn't burst you down. If she doesn't, burst her down instead.

VS

Azir

Medium

Difficulty: 4/10 - 8/10

If he is adept at poking, you will have a really hard time farming. If you manage to land a hook, you can easily burst him. He is immobile. Even if he used his azirR.png defensively, It won't stop your nautilusgrandline.png. You can hook through his azirR.png, you won't reach him though.

VS

Brand

Hard

Difficulty: 8/10 - 10/10

If he lands a stun, you are dead. He is extremely strong atm, try to farm. If you land a hook, immediately try to juke his spells why activating your nautiluspiercinggaze.png to mitigate at least some of his damage. Ask your jungler for a gank and hope for the best.

VS

Cassiopeia

Hard

Difficulty: 8/10 - 10/10

She will poison you and poke you all day long. Really hard to farm on this lane. If can anticipate and dodge her poison, it will make life easy for you.

VS

Ekko

Hard

Difficulty: 8/10 - 10/10

His mobility is extremely annoying. Hooking him is difficult because of his ekkoE.png.
Killing him is difficult because of his ekkoR.png. Running away from his difficult because of his ekkoQ.png slow and ekkoW.png stun/shield.
Pray for successful ganks.

VS

Fizz

Medium

Difficulty: 4/10 - 8/10

If he can't or doesn't use his fizzjump.png in order to juke your nautilusanchordrag.png, you can easily kill him.
It is not as easy against "normal" AP mages to burst you, because of your natural tankiness and your nautiluspiercinggaze.png, which can negate 105.png' fizzseastonepassive.png damage or 14.png quite effectively.

VS

Heimerdinger

Hard

Difficulty: 10/10 - 12/10

He will literaly make the laning phase hell for you. You will hard be able to farm.
Either try to push him back or sacrifice your mid turret and roam in order to get kills.

VS

Karma

Medium

Difficulty: 3/10 - 6/10

She can poke quite well with her karmaheavenlywave.png, even slightly through minions.
Careful when she activates her karmaspiritbond.png, it's probably an upcoming gank. You can use your nautilusanchordrag.png to hook a wall to escape effectively.

If you're about to deal the finishing blow, don't forget about her karmasoulshield.png.
With karmachakra.png enforced spells can be surprisingly strong, so be wary.

VS

Karthus

Easy

Difficulty: 3/10 - 5/10

Probably the easiest matchup, he has no hard CC. He can heavly slow you with his wallofpain.png (and reduce your MRes), watch out. Try to save your nautiluspiercinggaze.png for when he ults.
He is slow and immobile, most 30.png players will pick a defensive summoner spell like21.png or 3.png and try to farm until fully built.
Try to dominate him early.

VS

Kassadin

Medium

Difficulty: 5/10 - 7/10

New 38.png is surprisingly strong, his netherblade.png cooldown is lower and its damage increased.
Don't try to shield every nulllance.png, you'll rapidly run out of mana. Since he is melee, poke with nautilussplashzone.png a lot.
Often times, you can predict his riftwalk.png e.g. if you want to hook him post-6.
Don't recall too offensively when you're low, or you'll regret it.

VS

Katarina

Medium

Difficulty: 5/10 - 8/10

She has an infinite no-mana poke, but don't use nautiluspiercinggaze.png too much.
When she comes close to take last hits, use nautilussplashzone.png and decimate her.
You ult will follow her even when she shadowstep.pngs away.

VS

LeBlanc

Easy

Difficulty: 2/10 - 5/10

One of the easier matchups, especially if you can dominate her early on.
She is actually very vulnerable to CC - and you are 111.png, the champ with the most CC in the game.
14.png her before her health falls below 30%: only the real one has the 14.png debuff, the clone won't. It's an easy way to distinguish the clone from the real one (same with 3.png).

P.S.: the clone won't have any items.

VS

Lissandra

Hard

Difficulty: 6/10 - 8/10

She has poke, a large gapclose and can freeze near enemies - it will be hard to close in on her. If you ult, she will just ult herself; it's like a free 3157.png.
Call for your jungler's help.

VS

Lux

Medium

Difficulty: 3/10 - 9/10

Can either be really easy or extremely difficult. Juke her luxlightbinding.png, land a nautilusanchordrag.png - you win.
Otherwise, she will win hard. luxlightstrikekugel.png grants enormous waveclear, she can shield herself (luxprismaticwave.png) and her ult deals massive damage.
Try to get a killearly on, then it get easier.

VS

Malzahar

Hard

Difficulty: 6/10 - 10/10

He pushes really hard w/o any effort. His alzaharcallofthevoid.png's silence is the longest in game, careful.
His ult is just plain stupid, it's also called "LoL fuck you!". alzaharmaleficvisions.png Space Aids is also really annoying and deals surprising amounts of damage (3151.png will be hell).
alzaharnullzone.png deals %-damage, so health alone won't do you any good.

VS

Nidalee

Easy

Difficulty: 2/10 - 5/10

Juke her javelintoss.png and your lane is almost won. Feel free to engage with nautilusanchordrag.png, but don't expect any early kills, she will just jump away. Don't poke, she will heal it up.

VS

Orianna

Medium

Difficulty: 5/10 - 7/10

A good 61.png will it make really hard for you to actually kill her.
Farm as well as you can, she will try to deny.
She has a slow and a stun/knockup, a shield, strong auto attacks and nice burst damage.
Engage, when her orianaredactcommand.png and especially orianadetonatecommand.png is on cooldown.

VS

Syndra

Medium

Difficulty: 5/10 - 7/10

Farming is not difficult, but extremely annoying because of her low cooldown syndraQ.png poke.
She has a nice knockback/stun and an area slow, engage when syndraE.png is on cooldown.
Keep track of the number of her spheres, the more there are nearby, the more damage syndraR.png deals.

VS

Twisted Fate

Easy

Difficulty: 3/10 - 5/10

Rather easy, if you farm better and manage to avoid his pickacard.png (yellow stun card).
He is very squishy, burst him down at level 6.

P.S.: you can cancel his ult with your passive, nautilusanchordrag.png and nautilusgrandline.png. ;)

VS

Veigar

Medium

Difficulty: 4/10 - 10/10

The bane of every full AP champion. If you get one or two early kills, you can shut him down for a long period. Abuse this.
His damage early on is lackluster, be aggressive and try to deny farm.
In late game, use nautiluspiercinggaze.png to mitigate at least some of his damage - and, at all cost, avoid to touch the border of his veigareventhorizon.png.

VS

Vel'Koz

Medium

Difficulty: 5/10 - 8/10

Can go either way. If you land a nautilusanchordrag.png, demolish him. With every 3rd spell he hits you with, he deals additional true damage, be wary of that (his ult ticks every half second for a stack).

P.S.: his velkozW.png deals damage twice, first time low, second time higher damage and gives two passive stacks.

VS

Viktor

Hard

Difficulty: 7/10 - 10/10

Farming can be easy - if he lets you.
One of the most difficult matchups. If you come close to him, he will try to stun you, avoid this at all cost.
He is not as squishy as other mages, his viktorpowertransfer.png grants a short and small shield (and an empowered auto attack).

VS

Xerath

Medium

Difficulty: 4/10 - 8/10

If you can dodge skillshots - you're good to go. If not, you're dead.
He has long range snipe, and always be aware of his ult. People tend to forget about it.
At level 6, you can burst him - if you manage to land a hook, that is.

Don't stand in between your minions too much, so he has to decide whether to poke or clear the wave.

VS

Yasuo

Hard

Difficulty: 5/10 - 10/10

He is mobile, you are not. When he pokes with yasuoQ.png or auto attacks, retaliate with nautilussplashzone.png, ideally after popping his annoying shield. A lot of 157.png players nowadays max yasuoE.png first. It deals magic damage, so 3191.png might (!) not be the best first item rush (tip: take 3285.png to quickly burst him down).

VS

Zed

Medium

Difficulty: 6/10 - 10/10

In comparison to other AD assassins, 238.png is a little less effective against you, since you can anticipate the moment his zedR.png proccs and nautiluspiercinggaze.png yourself. He heavly depends on his ult. Use your CC to hold him under your turret when he dives you - he will back off immediately.

He is relatively squishy, you will be able to burst him if he falls below 60-70% health.

Do not buy any skins for Big Daddy AP 111.png, they are all ugly, w/o exception. Trust me, I'm an engineer.
