Summoner Spells Back to Top

AP Nidalee

76_64.png:
Whenever I play Nidalee I normally go 21.png as it allows me a much safer landing phase. Falling behind early in Nidalee is very dangerous as you'll have trouble farming into late game. I sometimes get 12.png when against certain match ups like 4_64.png38_64.png or if I'm top.

Why Barrier over Ignite?

I pick 21.png over 14.png because I feel very safe with getting 21.png. You don't want to die as  76_64.png  in laning phase. 21.png gives me a better chance to not die and get behind pre-6.

When do I get ignite, and why not ignite over barrier?

I normally get 21.png because as the new 76_64.png you just want to farm into mid game where you begin to take the game over. However when against match ups like50_64.png9_64.png getting 14.png might help you in lane. Also if you have a more aggressive play style 14.pngis a better option than 21.png.

I'm against a bursty champion and getting bullied out of every creep?

Getting 3.png can be useful when against rough match ups like 103_64.png131_64.png105_64.png55_64.png238_64.png91_64.png157_64.png when 21.png isn't enough to negate their damage. This is better explain in the match ups section.

Getting 7.png is just another alternative however I prefer getting 21.png as most mid laners either get ignite or inflict grevious wounds.

DO NOT GO TP+SMITE NIDALEE

Don't get 11.png12.pngon 76_64.png no matter what role you are.
Reasons for 11.png12.png
1. Tank Meta: 76_64.png is meant to be a bruiser top laner or a full damage mid laner. Cinderhulk is simply not good on 76_64.png as you will also find her to be really useless.
2. Jungle: If you are going 76_64.png, you will most likely get the Magus enchantment. Cinderhulk won't be useful on 76_64.png even if you include 3116_32.png3027_32.png in your build. Just buy a 3068_32.png if you want the aoe damage + tank.

3724_64.png RUNEGLAIVE

Since this is the new AP jungle item, you should still get this if you are juggling as Nidalee.

New Runes Back to Top

Masteries Back to Top

Offense - Recommended

1 point in "Double-Edged Sword". As a champion that mainly looks to poke from far away, this helps amplify your damage. Since the only time you are actively engaged in combat is when you are in cougar form, the melee part of this mastery also benefits you.

2 points in "Sorcery". The new CDR gives .25% more CDR than Season 3 Sorcery, and you could also substitute that 1 Butcher point into another Sorcery point, if you are confident in your last-hitting.

1 point in "Butcher". CSing with Nidalee is not the strongest, so getting more damage to last-hit minions is always good on her if you want to not fall behind easily.

3 points in "Mental Force". You either get 3 points for 0.55 ad per level if you put 3 points in "Brute Force", or 0.89 AP per level if you put them on "Mental Force". Obviously, Midalee needs AP, therefore go with "Mental Force".

1 point in "Feast". As you are mainly looking to farm for your mana item, surviving lane early is crucial. Getting health and mana for every creep will help achieve this.

1 point in "Arcane Mastery". Having 6 AP since the start of the game will help early laning phase.

3 points in "Executioner". There is nothing else to choose from with this mastery page, and the reward isn't that bad itself, spears will deal more damage for targets with less than half hp.

3 points in "Archmage" to increase AP by 5%. Generally full build gives you 800 AP. With "Archmage" you will have 840.

1 point in "Dangerous Game". Restoring 5% missing hp and mana on a kill might be devastating in a big team fight. This can also come in clutch for BIGPLAYS.

1 point in "Arcane Blade", It helps increase your auto attack damage which helps you last hit easier and split push.

3 points in "Devastating Strikes". This gives 6% Armor and Magic pen, the magic pen is what we need.

1 point in "Havoc". 3% increased damage will drastically improve your damage with every move or damaging spell in the game.

This tree is for top, jungle, and mid.

Defense - Recommended

2 points in "Block". Resistance

1 point in "Unyielding". Resistance

2 points in "Recovery". HP re-gen

3 points in "Veteran's Scars". HP

1 point in "Juggernaut". HP

This is general for basically every lane.

If Jangle

Remove
2 points in "Block". Not useful in jungle.
1 point in "Unyielding". Not useful in jungle.

Replace

2 points in "Tough Skin". Less damage from monsters.
1 point in "Bladed Armor". Less damage from monsters.

Utility - Secondary Option

1 point in "Phasewalker", "Scout" might or not be a better alternative. You can get either one depending on your playstyle. If you prefer having longer trinket range, or having a 1 second less casting time on recall, it is up to you on getting either one of these masteries.

3 points in "Expanded Mind". Nidalee is very mana-hungry. Although this mastery is meant for supports, there are no other options in the utility tree.

2 point in "Summoner's Insight". 7% less cooldown on summoner spells is always good.

1 point in "Strength of Spirit". After stacking tear, you will have about 2000 mana. With this mastery you will have 6 re-gen per 5 seconds.

1 point in "Alchemist", hp potions would now heal for 165 hp instead of 150, and mana potions would give 110 mana instead of 100.

1 point in "Runic Affinity", or "Culinary Master". You need blue buff a lot, and extending the duration of the buffs by 20% is great to have lots of mana and keep the max CDR. Getting a little bit more from your potions is always good, your choice.

Why trap over spear first?

Traps are better for leashing than spears, believe it or not. Traps do % current HP of the targets hit for 8 seconds (also gives them vision). Place the trap underneath the buff location before it spawns, and when it hits, it will get shredded. Also having early traps on the map can benefit your team and pounce allows you early mobility.

Can I not start spear first?

You can still start with spear first, if you invade. Trap would just reveal your team trying to invade if you place them in bushes when you are invading, but with a spear you can ks the kill (lol) or secure it after they flash away. Therefore, starting with spear is better than trap only if you invade.

NEW Nid: I almost always take W over Q now because of pounce....really, just because of pounce, early spear doesnt even do that much damage now in lane.

Cool tip with Nidalee Heal:

If you heal yourself and go in Cougar Form right away, the attack speed is still applied to you when you are in cougar form.

Place traps in bushes where the enemy team can be positioned or going through in an invade before 1:50.

IF YOUR JUNGLER wants to gank before level 3, get spear at level 2. If the jungler does a level 2 gank, with heal, you will have no damage besides you auto attack.

76_64.png is actually worth maxing as her takedown damage is also greatly increased every time her ult is upgraded.

Why max heal over spear?

Skill Order:

MAX SPEARS SECOND
MAX HEAL FIRST
MAX TRAPS LAST

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

this is usually what i always start with every game. gives you nice stats and the passive is nice too for sustain
you can start with these items if you are against a ranged caster like vel'koz or cassiopeia since the movement speed will help you dodge some skill~shots
this can also be a start if you have an easy match up . this also allows you to build into an early chalice or forbidden idol
don't start with these items. the stats are not worth for your damage or sustainability. flask and amplifying tone will make you very squishy and its not worth the extra health/mana regen or damage. ruby crystal, doran's shield, and doran's blade don't give you the stats you need for early game
If you use the masteries I recommend biscuits are what you will get. Wards and trinket should also be bought

Core Items

    outdated
    outdated
first back i usually rush a tear if you have the gold. boots, amplifying tome, rod, or more doran's rings are viable as well. i always pick up 2 wards no matter what lane.
    rush tear first back
these items are pretty much standard for all ap casters. rabadons gives you nice ability power increase void staff gives you 35% magic pen which is huge, and zhonyas is self explanatory for sticky situations.
depending on the situation i get one of these 4 boots ionian ~ generally if their only ranged is they ad carry or I'm really ahead because the 15% crd will allow me to dish out more spears tabi ~ if i want to play careful in lane or their team is mostly ad based merc ~ if they have a lot of cc or have a tanky utility jungler sorc ~ standard boots for ap champions when even in lane or against standard team composition
don't forget your wards and switch your trinket to sweeping lens. trust me the sweepers are really worth it
^^^ LUDEN'S ECHO ^^^ This item is really good on Nidalee. It helps amplify your burst and if you land a spear on a champ, it will increase the damage. You will almost always have your Luden's Echo passive up since Nidalee is so mobile and you spam a lot of abilities in cougar form. I would finish this as your 2nd item after a mana regen item. update*** this item is almost a must have on ap champions right now. it significantly increases your burst damage as well as increase mobility. after constant nerfs to this item, it is still really good on almost every ap champion
If you are looking for a safe play style throughout the whole game, this item actually isn't that bad. It adds tank stats as well as nice magic pen. It will help you kill their front line easier if you get focused on during a team fight. If you do get this item make sure to use as many bushwhacks as possible since with the new changes on your trap, this item will help make your traps do a lot more damage.
This is an alright item, I usually get this not for the passive but for the magic resistance it provides. If you are buying this item because their team is stacking mr, void staff is a much better choice. Against a full magic damage comp, I would finish this item 2nd. patch 5.8 onwards, this item isn't that good on nidalee anymore
If you want to get rid of an item for a different item it would be this item. This doesn't mean its a bad item, it just means you can survive without thiss item with a different play style.
This item is slowly starting to get more popular as players are starting to notice it's strengths. To koreans this serves as a new dfg. With the recent changes to it, it provides more ap, ad, life steal, spell vamp, and a passive that makes this item perfect for nidalee. this is pretty much the best item you can get on nidalee along with ludens echo patch 5.7 onwards, this item isn't viable anymore
PATCH 5.4 this is what my final build is most oftenly against a standard team The banshee's veil might me too excessive but Nidalee does a lot of damage anyways if played properly.
PATCH 5.5 This is what I usually end up with late game against a balanced team. I finish morello first and straight into liandry's. I get abyssal last since it really depends. Luden's echo, rylai's, lich bane, or a banshee's are all viable
tank jungle nidalee build. this is best for if you don't want to get flamed for not building tank and you still want to do damage. you can switch zhonyas for a liandry's or a rabadon since you are already decently tanky. cinderhulk is a great item this patch but you can still opt it out for a magus enchantment or swap rangers for a stalkers
PATCH 5.6 Since it is a new patch item choices still vary but this is what i usually look forward to build on nidalee. morellonomicon use to be far better than achenes but now they are both equal. you can still swap out achenes for morello as well as hextech for luden's echo
    patch 5.7 tank meta :(
another jungle nidalee build. this is the build i always use now and seen very often in korean solo queue. in certain situations zhonyas and ludens might be better. rod of ages can always replace tear route.
patch 5.8 + 5.9 + 5.10 tankier meta can switch rod of ages for tear route and luden/liandrys for zhonyas
this is my favorite nidalee build right now. you can use this build in literally every role and carry game. you can choose to opt out either shiv or last whisper for a bloodthirster or bork. this build is risky if you're behind and offers little tank stats
a build seen often in korea by woohyun + the shy (CJ Entus shy), cdcdcdcdcdcdcdcd, ssaP
patch 5.11. there are minor changes to matchups but nothing to worry about. ludens nerf does affect damage so i recommend liandries. this also means you don't need rod of ages
patch 5.13 introduced huge changed to ap item line up. this doesn't affect our build as much as our build paths. final build should be. as of patch 5.16 use this build
first back i usually rush a tear if you have the gold, boots, amplifying tome, rod, or more doran's rings are nice i always pick up 2 wards no matter what lane, first back
patch 5.14 follow same build patch 5.15 nidalee nerf :( still follow same build
patch 5.16 really big changes to numerous champions. changes don't affect nidalee herself positively or negatively so build still remains same. new items require a little time to know what to do against them 3rd item is steak's gage 4th is titanic hydra
in the situational section you'll find detailed opinion on rich bane. i added this to core items bc after reaching 6 items, you should look to sell boots for this item
only buy if you are having trouble against ad mid

Situational Items

at first thought my opinion on this item was "wow this item can go really well with cougar form q" but after playing games with and without lich bane on nidalee i realize that it's not as good as i thought. the cougar form q mixed with the sheen damage is only slightly increased so that you will notice the damage but not increased so much that it will actually one-shot them, it's not that good for split pushing as arcane blade plus your human "e" allows you to push really fast already. The amount of gold this item costs can be saved for luden's or other better choices
if you mastered nidalee or your team is really ahead. i don't recommend this item until you have either an athene's or morellonomicon.
out of these 2 items i would definitely choose banshee's veil as the passive is really useful for avoiding sticky scenarios and the stats as well aren't so bad for the cost. spirit visage can be useful if your team has a melee support or your team composition is based on all in fights
i normally get homeguards' as my enchantment since it helps me get to lane faster or whatever i planned on doing faster. alacrity is alright if you need the speed and is not planning on building lich bane. furor boots are alright if you are mostly in cougar form and is playing in melee mode very often. it can also help chase down enemies (not that you need it). distortion can also be useful if you plan on getting ghost as your secondary summoner spell. i can't really think of any scenario where captain enchanted boots is useful. if your team really lacks the speed or you really feel you need it for some reason go for it.
this item is often underrated or overlooked but for what it costs the stats are not bad. if they have a full ad attack speed team comp and zhonya's isn't enough this item surpasses sunfire cape, randuin's omen, and thorn mail. the 100 armor and 400 mana will really help you survive as well as use more of your abilities. the passive is for obvious reasons
i really don't recommend this item. based on my play style of nidalee i really never encounter a situation where this item came in good use. normally when i do have this item as my defensive item and i happen to die and use this passive, by the time i'm revived my whole team is dead or being chased down. if you are going into an hour or longer game and feel that you really need it then you should get this item
With the new changes to this item, it actually provides a lot of AP, adds a significant amount of hp, as well as make it easier to chase on a champion with your enhanced pounce if you've landed a spell on them previously.

If you have any questions or tips about items/builds comment what your question and ill add a section for whatever question you have.

103_64.png 6/10 ~ Farm/Snowball Lane

This lane can be tough for you levels 3 - 11.

After she gets 2 points in her Q she can chunk you for a lot behind her minions. Be sure to R -> W backwards each time you last hit in human form. You will want your jungler to gank you pre six or you will most likely get zoned and fall behind.
Rushing early 1001_32.png or 3028_32.png might help as well as taking 21.png or 3.png.
Make sure to poke her as much as you can levels 1 - 2.
However if you get a kill in this lane and is able to complete an Athene's after level 8 you can win this lane if you don't misplay or make careless mistakes.

Make sure to ward your sidelanes or use your trap as 103_64.png will mostly like roam after 6 if she can't get a kill on you.

*** PATCH 5.3 Ahri - Her damage is slightly reduced but she still has decent mobility. Make sure to be careful when she ults as each dash is on a 1 second cd. You don't have to worry about taking  21.png as her charm no longer amplifies damage and the removal of Deathfire Grasp (REST IN PEACE) but I would still consider exhaust the best for this matchup to great  reduce her mobility.

VS

Akali

Easy

84_64.png 5/10 ~ Bloody/Roam Lane

READ UPDATE ON BOTTOM

The only reason that I give this a medium difficulty ~ 5/10 ~ is because you are better than her in terms of utility and roaming.
Play very careful and just farm till your first back or when she hits level 6.

*Only ask for your jungler to gank if you are getting zoned and need help clearing wave. It's ok to let the wave push to your turret since Nidalee is decent at farming under turret.

Once you hit 6 make sure to trap both side bushes, shove wave to her turret. and recall immediately and purchase a chalice.
If she hits 6 first make sure you catch up and ping if you see her out of lane.
Make sure to follow her whenever you see her out of lane because if she gets ahead your lane is pretty much over.
If you do manage to poke her down after 6 and out trade her and she happens to back, quickly shove your wave and make a roam bot.

DO NOT TRY TO 1V1 HER IN ANYWAY EVEN IF YOU HAVE

21.pngOR 3.png.

Upgrading your sweeping lens to oracle's will help your team drastically in team fights if 84_64.png dives and w's

***UPDATE Patch 5.1 - This matchup is actually much easier for you. You have necessary abilities in her kit to outplay her. You can almost always underestimate her damage and still come out on top. 84_64.png is probably one of the lowest tier mids currently. Make sure to ward carefully.

VS

Alistar

Easy

12_64.png 3/10 ~ Farm/Roam Lane

This lane although is easy, it's going to be one hell of a hard game for you. No matter what Alistar builds he will always be tanky and a team fight monster. Mainly the reason this lane is easy is because his 1v1 potential on you is very low and it's very hard for him to kill you.
You want to mainly focus on just farming and trying to roam other lanes to get your team ahead and snowballing.
Don't get too carried away in lane and play too aggressively as he can set up ganks fairly well.
Make sure to definitely rush void staff this game after a mana region item. Getting kills on him early won't help you snowball the lane.
In teamfights make sure to go into cougar after his ult wears off.
*Your W trap is actually pretty good in this match up, I recommend upgrading W, E, W, E etc. The hp% per second is really useful.

VS

Anivia

Easy

34_64.png 2/10 ~ Farm/Roam Lane

This is relatively one of the easiest and uncommon lanes you'll have. Anivia is squishy early on before her R.O.A. and she has a hard time cs"ing under turret. This is one of the few matches where you are safer to start whichever items you want. In this lane you want to quickly shove as early as possible and make her farm under tower. Pre-6 her wave clear is really weak and if she chooses to use her abilities to clear minions she will most likely miss most of her creeps.

*** DON'T FORGET TO WARD SIDE LANES AS IF THEIR JUNGLER CC'S YOU IT ALLOWS ANIVIA TO EASILY FOLLOW UP WITH A GUARANTEED STUN

If your team is really ahead I recommend you to try and snowball yourself as much as possible and look to quickly end the game. If it reaches late game, her kit can outburst you with unexpected damage.

You are also free to take summoner spells other than 14.png as you generally will out damage 34_64.png early-mid game.

VS

Annie

Medium

1_64.png 7/10 ~ Farm/Roam Lane

This little grill is seriously super annoying. She will outburst you in all stages of the game if you are equal with her. Never farm in lane with cougar form as that will only allow her to get a free trade on you. I would recommend starting 1074_32.png and taking ad or hybrid pen runes to make cs'ing easier for you.
3.png Might be a tricky spell to use in this matchup. She will most likely use her whole kit and leave you with 10% hp if she decides to burst you when her stun's up. If you want to use exhaust in this matchup you have to anticipate when she's going to initiate. I recommend taking 21.png since 1_64.png will probably take 14.png or build a 3165_32.png for her mana regen item.

*** Make sure to team fight very carefully as if 1_64.png happens to get a good let off on your team you're forced to pretty much to run. So in order to counter play this make sure to have someone split push and have the rest siege one lane together. 3102_32.png Make sure your whole team gets this item.

VS

Azir

Easy

268_64.png 2/10 ~ All-In/Farm Lane

This match-up is really easy for 76_64.png especially after the nerfs on 268_64.png's soldiers.
You just have to be careful to stand about 2 creep sizes away from his soldiers as the auto range of it is pretty low now. If you are playing really safe you don't even have to worry about standing away from his soldiers as 268_64.png himself isn't close enough to get an auto on you which won't allow his soldiers to attack either. You don't have to worry about him roaming as you can out roam him but be careful for dragon fights as 268_64.png is really good at those. 4.png14.png are probably the recommended spells.
***Even though you outroam him don't do it unless he's missing in lane since 268_64.png can take down your turret very quickly and freeze lane right after with his passive.

VS

Brand

Medium

63_64.png 5/10 ~ Farm Lane

This matchup is actually pretty hard for you. All his abilities apply previous wounds so maxing PrimalSurge.png and playing safe isn't that good. I would get either 21.png / 3.png in this matchup as he is squishy so 14.png won't help much.
You will almost always fall behind in this lane unless he misplays. You CAN win this matchup if you have your jungler bank pre-6 allowing you to rush an early chalice.

***BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN YOUR JUNGLER GANKS YOUR LANE AFTER 6 AS ITS ACTUALLY EASIER FOR HIM TO 2V1 THAN TO 1V1

VS

Caitlyn

Medium

51_64.png 5/10 ~ Farm/Roam Lane

Do people even do this anymore?
Anyways you will generally lose lane in this match-up as her poke is really high. If you want to kill her in lane I suggest maxing e and grabbing 3.png otherwise you will have to rely on your jungler whole game.
This match-up can be easy however if you quickly shove wave, heal yourself to full hp, and roam top to bot.
***Most 51_64.png players will ult you as soon as they see you which isn't that bad since you have a healing ability.

Rushing a 3157_32.png after your mana-regen item can be good. 3025_32.pngcan be considered as a replacement for 3100_32.png in this match-up.

VS

Cassiopeia

Medium

69_64.png 7/10 ~ Farm/Roam Lane

This matchup is actually pretty hard for 76_64.png even after the nerfs to 69_64.png's damage. Her early aggression out damages other champs even 76_64.png.
This matchup can be a super easy one if you ask your jungler to gank early.
A level 2 bank can be useful as 69_64.png has no escapes and with 69_64.png's 4.png being down, a lot of pressure is taken off of you.

***During team fights she will mostly like out damage you however it depends on her build and positioning. If you land a spear on her, you will most likely kill her if you pounce in. If she's going tankish, make sure to follow up on champs that you land spears on since tankish 69_64.png will mainly rely on dps which won't really matter once you take out her whole team.
Getting exhaust this matchup is really good as it removes all her damage. Think of 69_64.png as an 1_64.png so be careful if 69_64.png flashes in and ults your whole team.
Spamming traps behind her minions early is important early.

31_64.png 5/10 ~ Farm/Roam Lane

This is either a super easy matchup for you or a guaranteed lost for you.

IF EVERYTHING GOES WELL EARLY
you can almost always shove your lane and quickly rotate to a side lane and try to get a gank off. An early lead on 31_64.png is good as it allows you to complete your items much faster than him. The later he gets his 3027_32.png the better. Be very careful from mid to late game as he will eventually catch up in damage and his ult is an AP scaling true damage ability.

IF EVERYTHING GOES EVEN/BADLY
oh boy you're in for a treat.

Ok no seriously, if you are behind in this matchup, you will feel extremely useless, out-damaged, as well as behind. His passive allows him to regen 40% of his hp every wave he clears so going for trades is pretty much pointless. If he's fed already and proceeded to build a 3165_32.png or 3001_32.png first item, you're fucked. Sorry. Nothing really you can do except let your first turret fall and roam side lanes.

***WAYS YOU CAN MAKE SURE YOU GET AHEAD EARLY
1. He has no mobility early ~ Punish (Harassing, Early trades, Ganks)
2. He has extremely high mana costs/cooldowns early ~ Punish (Trade with him whenever he uses an ability to farm
3. He is melee ~ Punish (Harass him with auto's early and zone him)

21.png Will help in this matchup to negate most of his feast damage.

85_64.png 10/10 Roam Lane

This matchup is super hard for 76_64.png.
85_64.png's mobility is super dumb. 85_64.png can all which makes him hard to face as 76_64.png.

You can win early fights with crafty dodging of his shuriken but watch out for the Kennen's 4th attack on his W spell, he will usually have to use it on a creep or else he misses cs but don't let him auto attack you with it and chain it with the W active.

Make sure you have the right hybrid masteries for the magic resist and armor and make sure you have tenacity.
Asking for help from your jungler is almost close to pointless as 85_64.png can easily dodge abilities and just e away to his tower. Blue buff is almost useless for you as you are never going to fight him and cougar form has no mana cost. He will most likely push wave and force you under tower so be prepared to last hit for a good 15 minutes or more.

***Snowballing 76_64.png won't help at all, he will still out damage you and his kit is almost suited to outplay you. The only reason this is also a roam lane is you will want to snowball your top lane and rely on him to cc 85_64.png and take him out in team fights.
3.png is almost a must in this match up.

Nidalee Top Back to Top

Nidalee top requires a different style of laning phase.

A tactic that is essential to Nidalee top is bush weaving.
RF Legendary's guide goes through everything:
http://www.lolking.net/guides/592

The only thing different with my version of Nidalee top are the item choices.

Early Game Back to Top

Lane phase.

Bushwhacks

Starting bushwhacks implies that you are going to utilize it the best you can, basically what you want to do is use those in high traffic locations (tri-bush, river bush, ramps etc.)
Aside from that, you want to keep lane bushes whacked as well since having control over those is very vital to your playstyle.
The so known 'bushstep' requires you to bushwhack in the bushes you are executing it in.
(explained in more detail lower)
Bushwhacks are very important in order to execute this, usually laners do not face-check bushes that have traps in them since it allows you for a very easy trade, so making sure they can't do that is big.
Also, you can bushwhack underneath your-self when playing against someone who has a gapcloser to make sure you get an extra hunt proc as well as some % dmg on them if they dash you.

Trading & and all-ins.
(Philosophy of damage dealing or how to generally not suck at laning)

You do not trade anything as far as the lane goes, rule of the thumb to keep you safe, stick to that unless you know to do otherwise in a specific situation.

What you want to achieve with this is fall back safety where you don't make any move that will make you lose pressure, usual auto attacks may seem as if they don't do much damage but having a convenient bush in the toplane makes sure that you can keep auto-attacking people all day. I ensure there is no such thing as dealing no damage and if you see an opporunity to AA the opponent for free you go for it, what I mean by this is that you don't want to overextend into the creepwave just to get the hit off, if they back out let them be, this is zoning, if they get close enough where they recieve the AA hit you punish them, if they stay safe, they miss cs and have no pressure.

Once they are low enough, you can take a trade. Aim for hitting a spear while they are chunked, then following up with a regular pounce into E + Q combo, than back out unless they are too pushed up to get away. If they are, human form, spear and proceed with another combo until they have to flash or die.
Be careful of an all-in back, this is an experience thing but what I am hinting at is that if you are against Riven that has an ulti, obviously you want to be very careful jumping in-to her because that is exactly what she wants and even if she is low, she can still kill you because her all-in is better than yours! Same thing with Irelia, Fiora and some other champions who have strong 'burst'.

Dealing with engages is very important, I will make another example out of Riven, she wants to E + combo into you in order to do damage, this is easily anticipated and avoided by a simple R + W away. This requires some reaction but anticipation more than anything, comes with experience but pounce away has to be your basic 100% reaction to every engage that is done against you, weather its an Irelia Q'ing on a creep or Fiora dashing, get some breathing space between you and them as soon as you see the engage.

Once you know some of their cooldowns are down, you can play more aggressive or force a fight, its the same philosophy with every champion you play, once you know the opponent downed a spell, approximate mind timer should suggest you that its a good window to trade.
If they fight you, they won't have that ability to fight which means they will be weaker than you and if they run, they just take the damage you dealt without doing anything back!
Nidalee has very low cooldowns and two ability sets you can utilize meaning that you can abuse it and bait opponent trade by pouncing away and than re-engaging knowing their abilities are down.

Heal allows you to sustain an 'x' amount of hp back as well as provides an attack speed boost for a short period of time. This is a very useful tool for sustaining back after trading as well as a good amplifier mid-fight against someone. What this means is that if you are playing against a champ that has no way to sustain back you may trade them if you are absolutely sure you won't take more damage than they do, afterwards you can keep pressuring the lane dealing free ranged damage and sustain yourself back up leaving them without hp since they have no sustain.

However if you are significantly ahead, you can force things and rely on being stronger and having a heal.
^ This applies to every champion pretty much, very important to know what you can do and can't.

Make sure that you heal yourself using Alt + E over coursing over yourself, saves time, prevents stupid situation where you throw spears the opposite direction.

Bushwhacking bushes is very important to prevent ganks. Don't forget to keep them bushwhacked, please.

Having better mobility then most of solotop champs gives you an opportunity to help the jungler invade. If you are duo with a junlger or you are playing with him in team you can make some nasty invades with early push from nida and then going red or blue.

Mid Game Back to Top

You will probably either get really fed during this phase of the game or you will fall even further behind if you don't have an early lead.

IF YOU ARE AHEAD
Make sure to keep presence in lane as well as trap the whole map. Roaming during this stage will result in a couple of kills but by the time you pick off their bot lane, they will start to group mid.

IF YOU ARE BEHIND
Don't ask for ganks as kills on you won't matter if you are far behind in gold. Keep trying to farm as much as possible and beg jungler for blue. If they are fed to the point where they just dive you at full health, ask for a 1v2 lane as you are already really far behind and you need to rely on your team to carry.

Level 6-8
Keep farming and trying to zone them as best as possible. You will get ranked a lot here so make sure to pick up 2 stealth wards everytime you back. If you know their buff timers, you can even go and try to kill their jungler or deny your laner a blue.
Level 9-13
During this phase you will want to roam lanes that are ahead. Whichever lane you see is ahead, go and help push down their tower. If both lanes are behind, make sure when you roam your jungler is there with you. If both lanes are even, you can most likely kill them if you play the fight properly and their mid/jungle/top isn't there
Level 14-16
Just look forward to completing your build. Keep note of the type of damage they do (even though some people build full AP, their abilities might do true damage or physical damage). If you have trouble staying safe or your team has trouble peeling for you, purchase a banshee's veil or ask for a lane to split.
Level 17-18
This is no longer late game... Move onto the next section.

Late Game + Team Fighting Back to Top

Late game is probably Nidalee's most difficult phase if you're not seiging. Hopefully you'll have an advantage by now and be up at least 1 item on the enemy team.

Nidalee is best at cleaning up or finishing off targets in a teamfight. Her takedown does more damage the lower the health your target has, but it also has high base damage, this makes it very good for executing half health(or lower) squishies.

In a teamfight, unless you're playing Nidalee top and you're extremely tanky, you want the teamfight to be split up. Ideally they won't all be stacked on top of each other so that they can all focus you when you jump in. If you don't have another tanky champion to dive the enemy back line with you, you shouldnt jump on them unless they get caught by a CC.

You do not want to be the person engaging unless you can catch a split off target.

If you're very far ahead and confident that you can 1v2 the enemy ADC and support/mid, you can stand off to the side a bit and wait for the fight to split up before moving in and auto attacking/throwing spears at the enemy back line to pressure them away while your team is killing the enemy front line. Sometimes, you'll be able to auto attack the enemy ADC, hit a spear on them, jump into their back line, execute their ADC, then chase their mid down while your team 4v2s.

If you're not diving the enemy back line, heal your ADC and help them kill the enemy tanks. You want to hover around the edge of a teamfight, right outside the enemy squishies range, throwing spears and placing traps around them to pressure them while not actually dying to them.

You can poke the enemy team down with spears and if you can hit a spear on the enemy mid or ADC you can pounce onto them, but only if your team is near you. After using your spells you have to decide whether you want to continue chasing and sticking onto their squishies(if you're dying fast this is not a good idea), or you can pounce away and hover outside of their range, throwing spears again.

Ideally your Syndra(or other mid laner that's good at picking off targets) will be able to hit a long range CC on a squishy for you to follow up with a spear and then jump on them, forcing a flash or killing them.

Basically, you want to always be in range for a spear so that you can jump in and quickly execute someone if you land a spear on an important target, but you don't want to engage or jump too far ahead of your team unless you're super far ahead and very tanky.

Play around the enemy team's CC. If the enemy team has a Morgana, you don't want to jump into their team alone or you'll get CC'd and killed before you can escape. If the enemy team has no CC, you can jump in to finish a target then escape with your reset pounce cooldown.

Don't be afraid to stay near a fight when you're low health. You can heal yourself or your teammates and throw spears without being in danger of dying. Sometimes, you can even hit a spear and kill a squishy from half health after you've been knocked out of the fight with 400 health.

TL;DR: Don't jump into the entire enemy team just because you hit a spear. Wait until they're split up, try to execute important targets.

Tips and Tricks Back to Top

PLACES ON MAP YOU CAN POUNCE OVER

pounce map.png

This is a map of all the walls that I've been able to pounce through. You can also pounce through every turret and inhibitor. Some walls are unmarked because I was unable to pounce through them, but you might be able to. These are just the ones that I've tested and am able to do.

These are very useful for escaping, or chasing opponents that flash/dash over walls.

PATCH 5.2 UPDATE
With the new patch allowing the Prowl de-buff to be applied to neutral monsters (jungle camps), when trying to run away in the jungle you can spear camps like the blue buff, red buff, wolves, gromps, raptors etc. so then you can quickly go into cougar and have a greatly increased pounce range to use to escape.

Patch Updates 5.1 ~ Forwards Back to Top

PATCH 5.2 UPDATE***

Allowing Nidalee to Hunt neutral monsters not only opens up a viable fallback pattern and alternate gold stream for cats finding themselves behind in a game, but also supports the interesting options she can bring to teams as a jungler. There's a new knife-cat in town. Spear-cat? Spearcat. Stabby spearcat.
General
IT'S COMPLICATEDAttack frame sped up slightly. This doesn't mean Nidalee attacks faster, just that she completes her attacks faster.Nidalee_Passive.pngPassive - Prowl
NEWLITERAL DEFINITIONNidalee can now also Hunt neutral monsters

2/2/15
When we changed Nidalee's "Hunt" passive to apply to jungle monsters, we also made it so that hunted monsters would be rooted for 2 seconds when debuffed. This was to prevent those frustrating situations when Nidalee would spear a monster over a wall only to have it run out of Pounce range trying to get her. This was included with Nidalee's 5.2 changes, we just forgot to document this one. Sorry!
QUIT RUNNING I'M TRYING TO HUNT'Hunted' monsters are also rooted for 2 seconds after being debuffed so that Nidalee can actually get in range to Pounce on them. This change was included in 5.2, we just forgot to document it. Sorry!

Patch 5.15 update

Nidalee

Q cast time up and damage down. W's vision greatly reduced.

As one of our more unique and polarizing champions (due to her ability to run away with a lead) Nidalee's been out of the patch notes for some time. For 5.15, it's the same old song-and-dance - increase the risk she has to take on to succeed with her aggressive assassination patterns. Tossing massive Javelins and stalking the weak is most certainly a hallmark of Nidalee's playstyle, but the number of tools she has to choose her engagements leaves her opponents without much of a say. These changes continue to pressure Nidalee to really commit with cougar-form takedowns, instead of constantly fishing with poke from afar. They also open up more ability to evade Nidalee’s attempts to continue the hunt once she’s got her eyes on you.
