Summoner Spells Back to Top

Smite

A required spell when you're playing the Jungler role in order to secure Drakes, Barons etc. Also grants buffs from jungle camps when used on them.

Flash

A very useful Summoner's Spell to escape, catch enemies or to dodge spells etc.

New Runes Back to Top

Runes

This is a regular rune setup I use for my Nocturne games. You want to be running the Domination tree as your main runes and the Precision tree as secondary.

Domination

Electrocute

Definitely the best option for Nocturne. It gives you much needed sudden burst, which is useful throughout the game. There is no point to go Dark Harvest, as the AD stacking won't do much for you, as you want to focus on ganking as much as possible. Alternatively, you could be using the Predator rune, but I have not found it useful on Nocturne as you will be using your Duskbringer or Paranoia to catch up with people.

Sudden Impact

Works extremely well with your ultimate and Coup de Grace. When you ulti onto enemy you will gain extra lethality/magic penetration for 5 seconds, which is more than enough to burst someone down.

Zombie Ward

This rune can be changed to either Ghost Poro or if you like, use the Zombie Ward. I prefer to use the Zombie Ward, because it gives you an extra ward when your old ward placement dies. Ghost Poro seems to be a bit annoying and switch bushes way too quickly when you roam through your own or the enemy jungle.

Ravenous Hunter

This is the only rune out of the 3 which will actually benefit Nocturne. As you won't be using any other active item than Youmoo's, the CDR rune is useless. Also, the out of combat movement speed rune is useless, as you will be chasing your enemies down with Duskbringer. That leaves the Ravenous Hunter left. Although, this rune isn't optimal on Nocturne, since it only provides healing from abilities and not auto-attacks, it's still the best rune to go for. It has saved my life, multiple times.

Precision

Legend: Alacrity

Works extremely well if you are planning to go for the crit build on Nocturne (Shiv + IE). Anyways, in my opinion this is the best legend option in general, because it gives you more duelling power. Whether you go Devourer or Warrior jungle item.

Coup de Grace

You want to have this rune in order to execute champions easier, especially in the early game.

nocturnepassive.png

Umbra Blades

Nocturne's passive ability. This helps you clear camps early and offers flat healing depending on the amount of targets hit. It also becomes strong in team fights if you manage to launch yourself on a pile of enemies, since they will all take damage around you.

BUFFED!
Now additionally scales with 0.15 ability power per hit

nocturneduskbringer.png

Duskbringer

The most useful ability of Nocturne. Duskbringer is vital when ganking, duelling and clearing camps early on. Always max this skill first, and do not miss it... It can mean the difference between killing when ganking or winning duels. Duskbringer enables you to be able to chase your target down or to escape tough situations, since Nocturne does not have any gapcloser apart from his ultimate, you are hopeless if your Flash is on cooldown. Duskbring can also be used to snipe down targets who are sitting under turret with low hp (Trust me, this has worked for me hundreds of times).

nocturneshroudofdarkness.png

Shroud of Darkness

A very useful ability. This ability grans you a flat 20% attack speed when lvl'd up. Its activate also can block any spell on you if you time it right. This ability can and will almost always turn duels into your favor if played correctly. Each champion you face has a different spell you need to block to be able to win or catch them up (This is explained further in guide. See "Matchups".

nocturneunspeakablehorror.png

Unspeakable Horror

The only crowd control ability Nocturne has. This ability is quite weak, even after the buff on it, which grants you movement speed if facing the target... it still lacks power. However, it is still very useful ability, but you have to learn to use it wisely. While trying to fear a target, try to stay ahead or very close to them while following their Dusktrail. This prevents the enemy of getting away after they get off your fear. This ability can also be used to escape tough situations, by fearing your target who is following you while running away. This ability takes many games to learn, to be able to use it properly and efficiently.

nocturneparanoia.png

Paranoia

Nocturne's trademark ability. This spell is one of the best ultimates of all Junglers in the game, and offers a perfect tool to catch those pesky carries and enemies who are trying to run away. It has also a VERY long cooldown, and explains the reason why I choose to use CDR runes when playing Nocturne. Activating this ability limits vision from enemy players and allows you to dive into any enemy within your area of reach. This ability is VERY situational, and takes a lot of time to learn to use it properly and efficiently to secure kills. Knowing your match ups, damage etc. will all play a factor when you are choosing to dive an enemy, all of this will come by time.

Never ever dive onto whole enemy team if they are close to each other, unless they are very low or you are greatly ahead in the game. It is very hard to explain when to use this ability, since it is VERY situational and depends on multiple factors, but a good tip is NOT to use the ultimate unless you are certain that you can kill your target, escape after it, or be able to follow up on rest of the enemies without DYING.
Nocturne should NEVER be the one engaging first, unless you are very tanky. Always wait for a perfect moment when the enemy carry/carries have used their disables, escape abilities etc. to guarantee you a perfect moment to use the ultimate.

With a lot of practice you are also able to execute your Duskbringer mid-air, guaranteeing a hit on the enemy before they have time to do anything.
Enough said, this spell can be only learned after countless of games and trial & error.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

First Buy. Flask is a better choice, but alternatively, you can buy 3 Health Pots to have a better early clear.
When you're first back. It is always better to go for the Caulfield's Warhammer than Jungle Item when backing first, unless you do not have the gold ofc.
Finish Warrior's first and then buy boots.
Since Patch 6.9 Devourer got changed into Bloodrazor, which actually works pretty good on Nocturne now, since you no longer require to stack it. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS ITEM OVER WARRIOR'S ENCHANTMENT, UNLESS YOU ARE GOING TO USE FERVOR.
Really... don't buy this :/.. I know you get the slow and true damage, but Skirmisher is just so much better for your early/mid game presence...

Core Items

Ninja Tabi's for heavy AD comps. If you are facing a high CC/AP team, you might want to choose Merc's
Probably the best first item to buy on Nocturne atm, unless you are not planning on following the Crit path (Shiv -> IE).
Buy this after Shiv, your damage increase is insane and you find it a lot easier to burst squishies and to duel tanky champions.
The new Guardian Angel is an excellent item for Nocturne. You get AD and you can play more aggressively with your ultimate, as GA will save your life.
Normally after buying my Crit items and GA, I go for Bloodthirster or BoRK. Alternatively, if the team is tanky, you might as well build Last Whisper items or Black Cleaver.
    Against tankier comps.
Exceptional item for split-pushing and also if you are planning to do a lot of "Suicide" ultis in team fights late game, this item gives you good AoE burst when diving.

Situational Items

Double Shield?! Yep. When used with Shroad of Darkness, you can have two shields and they consume one spell each even if used at the same time. This item can be useful for Nocturne. You can activate the shield before diving, which gives you basically two shields combined with your W. Extremely good against CC/AP heavy comps.
Death's Dance has seen some changes, and I think it is a viable item on Nocturne due to its 10% CDR, heal and 80 AD dmg.
Only go for this item if you build Bloodrazor

VS

Aatrox

Easy

An easy match up.

Should you ever meet a player who plays Aatrox jungle... It's easy game for you.

You can fight him at all points of the game, he is squishier than you and is worse on 1v1's.

However, he can potentially become dangerous in mid-late game if he goes AS builds with Sated Devourer.

VS

Amumu

Easy

Easy match up.

Nocturne wins Amumu hard throughout the whole match.

Try to counter jungle him early, to render him useless for early game and weaken his ability to gank lanes.

After he hits lvl 6, focus on pressuring lanes more than him.

VS

Aurelion Sol

Easy

Easy matchup.

Nocturne's kit counter Aurelion Sol pretty hard.

Aurelion Sol is extremely weak against champs who can stay in a melee distance from him. This prevents Sol's 3 spinning stars from damaging Nocturne at all.

Nocturne can also Shield (W), his stun completely.

VS

Diana

Hard

A hard match up.

Somehow, Diana is very strong against Nocturne even for a good Nocturne player.

She has shield, dash and slow, which are all something Nocturne doesn't have.

She is very good in 1v1's and her counter ganking potential after lvl 6 is very good.

Try to focus on her early, when she is the most vulnerable.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Hard

A very hard match up.

Basically, if Mundo has his ulti up, there is no chance you will be able to kill him.

Try to focus on his weak early game and have as much pressure on the map as possible.
Do not try to 1v1 him, unless his is really low.

VS

Ekko

Medium

A medium match up.

Ekko jungle is less played now, but you will occassionally meet people who will still play him in the jungle.

He has stronger early game than you, and his burst/cc potential is pretty insane throughout the game. Try to avoid 1v1's unless you can surprise him, or find him at low hp in his jungle. Try to focus your ganks, so you can counter-gank the lane he tries to gank. This way you can avoid falling on his long duration stun, and potentially giving 2 kills to enemy laner or him.

VS

Elise

Easy

Very easy match up for Nocturne.

You can duel her easily, by using your (W) Shroud of Darkness and disabling her (Q) Neurotoxin or (E) Cocoon. However, be extra careful if you are clearing camps or moving in your own jungle at low HP. She can be extra deadly when counter jungling you early.

However, after you get to lvl 6. You will crush that bug easily with your ulti. Remember to save it when she tries to Rappel away in order to follow her up and kill her.

VS

Evelynn

Easy

Easy match up.

You shouldn't have any issues against Evelynn.

However, she will most likely try to kill you at your second buff, because she has invisibility to surprise you.

VS

Fiddlesticks

Easy

A very easy match up.

Fiddlesticks cannot do anything against Nocturne.

You can easily counter jungle him and destroy his whole game. Try to prevent him from ganking lanes early and/or farming the jungle.

After Fiddlesticks reaches lvl 6. He becomes quite dangerous, as he can jump over walls with his ultimate crowstorm.png. Therefore, try to focus on him early as he has no 1v1 potential whatsoever.

VS

Gragas

Medium

A medium match up.

By blocking his body slam, you can easily turn fights into your favor.

However, he has a better early game than you, and his counter gank potential leaves a dangerous chance for Nocturne getting ran over by him while ganking a lane.

Avoid him early, or focus on counter-jungling him when you have vision of your enemy laners to shut him down, and reduce the amount of ganks he can give to his laners.

VS

Graves

Hard

Very hard match up.

Graves is currently still very strong in the current meta (6.4).

Focus trying to sneak up on him from a unwarded bush or counter jungle him when you see a good moment to do so.

However, never try to 1v1 him when he has a clear vision of you. He will kite the hell out of you and potentially destroy you as well. He also has a very good snowball chance even in the jungle, so be careful...

VS

Hecarim

Easy

Easy match up.

Hecarim only becomes a real threat after lvl 6.

You should try to focus on counter-jungling him and shutting him down early on when he is the most vulnerable.

VS

Ivern

Medium

Easy/Medium match-up, depending on how you deal with him. You can just nocturneshroudofdarkness.png his ivernq.png and outduel him.

However, he can be very painful early due to his easy clears and the fact that most Ivern players will try to clear your jungle meanwhile you're ganking.

Try to focus on shutting him down early or he will become very annoying to deal with, due to his tankiness.

VS

Jarvan IV

Medium

A medium match up.

Jarvan IV only proves to be dangerous to you during the early levels.

He has slower clearing time, and he is weaker in the jungle than you, but 1v1's can easily be done in your favor by blocking his knock ups or Q's in general. His counter-ganking ability is also a huge threat for Nocturne, since you have no way of escaping from his ultimate without using a flash.

VS

Kayn

Hard

Kayn is a very difficult match up for Nocturne.

He has better roaming and ganks early than Nocturne, and he will usually surprise you by going through walls when you're clearing your buffs early, resulting in you having Spells on CD and getting destroyed by him.

Best way to play against Kayn is to counter gank him at level 6. Your ultimate and map presence becomes way better after you unlock Paranoia.

VS

Kha'Zix

Medium

A medium match up.

Try to avoid 1v1íng Kha'Zix in the jungle due to his khazixQ.png's isolation damage.

Try to catch him offguard in his own jungle, or by counter ganking him. He is very weak early if surprised, and later on your burst potential is a lot higher than his, unless you've fallen behind. Try to block his Q's with your W to be able to 1v1 him efficiently.

VS

Kindred

Medium

Medium match up.

Kindred counters Nocturne very hard in early levels.

You should play your early game farming and ganks very safe against Kindred. Her damage is higher than yours and she has the mobility to chase you down.

Counter Tips:

- Try to counter jungle her early to make her lose her buffs and forcing her to farm longer.

VS

Lee Sin

Easy

Lee Sin can be quite tough early on against Nocturne.

During the early game, you should be extra careful of Lee Sin attempting to counter jungle your camps. His early game strength is higher than Nocturne's and he can easily make you useless quickly by killing you over and over again.

Counter Tips:

- Avoiding walking to unwarded bushes/areas, especially when being under 60% of your HP. Lee Sin can easily Sonic Wave to you and burst you down.
- Lee Sin can never face you if you have a clear vision on him (unless he is really ahead of you in the game). Save your (W) Shroud of Darkness to disable his (Q) Resonating Strike and he cannot fight you at all.
- Lee Sin will try to counter jungle and counter gank lanes, and potentially beating you in that. Be extra careful during the early game when ganking lanes.

VS

Malzahar

Easy

Easy match-up.

Malzahar cannot do anything against you...
Your best move is to counter jungle him as much as possible, and try to keep vision over his ganks, because your ganks are so much stronger.

VS

Master Yi

Easy

A very easy match up.

Master Yi only becomes a real threat after he hits lvl 6.

Try to destroy him in the jungle meanwhile he is trying to farm and stack his devourer.
Your burst potential with ulti will destroy him even after lvl 6. But watch out for his counter ganks .They're deadly.

VS

Nidalee

Medium

A medium match up.

Nidalee is very strong in the early game, and she is very hard to catch due to her cougar form jumps.

Try to block her spears and destroy her as quickly as you can. She cannot duel your if she misses even one spear.

Try to counter gank her early by blocking the spear from you, and or your teammate to avoid her making the long  range jump. Nidalee has slightly slower clear times than you as a Nocturne, so use this as your advantage and try to counter jungle her in the early levels. It will completely ruin Nidalee in the jungle and force her to farm early on.

VS

Nunu

Easy

Easy match up.

You can easily shut down Nunu by blocking his iceblast.png's with your nocturneshroudofdarkness.png.

Try to counter jungle him early, since he has very slow clearing times.
His ganks are also weak, which leaves you a great potential to destroy his gank attempts.

VS

Olaf

Hard

Very hard matchup.

You should avoid picking Nocturne into an enemy Olaf jungle.

Olaf excels in 1v1 combat, and is very strong throughout the whole game. However, there are ways to beat Olaf.

Counter Tips:

-Try rendering Olaf useless in the early game. His spells cost a lot of mana and he is usually low HP in the jungle. Try to set up counter jungling with your mid laner to slow his early game down.

VS

Pantheon

Easy

Easy match up.

Pay extra attention on his early counter jungle attempts and counter ganks.
Nocturne outscales Pantheon very hard, and he is not able to 1v1 you unless he is well ahead.

VS

Rammus

Medium

Medium match up.

Rammus can be very annoying against Nocturne, due to his tankiness.

Try to ruin his early game by counter jungling and/or setting up ganks with your mid laner or support in the early game.

Try to hold good vision to prevent Rammus from charging on your lane mates with his powerball.png.

VS

Rek'Sai

Easy

Easy match up.

You shouldn't have any problems against Rek'Sai as Nocturne.

Try to hide in river bushes and keep good vision on him early on.
Avoid walking in his jungle, because of his passive vision of footsteps when you move.

Try to counter jungle him early on, and counter gank as he is weaker than you.

VS

Shyvana

Hard

Very hard match up.

You should never try to 1v1 her, apart from very early levels. She excels in 1v1 combat and becomes a lot stronger than you as Nocturne.

Counter Tips:

- Try to counter jungle her early, to make her lose her buffs and her early gank effictiveness.
- Try to keep view of her in the map, so you do not get counter jungled by her or counter ganked.

VS

Skarner

Hard

A very hard match up.

Skarner can outduel Nocturne very hard throughout the game.

- Try to avoid confronting Skarner alone, you will struggle fighting him alone.
- Try to counter jungle him early, as he is slower and loses more hp/mana than Nocturne.

On the other hand, you might as well avoid picking Nocturne for this match up, as it is one of the only champions you cannot win as Nocturne, unless you snowball hard early on.

VS

Udyr

Hard

A very hard match up.

Udyr can easily outduel and counter jungle Nocturne.

Against this match up, try to farm early on and pin point your ganks efficiently.
Try to keep good vision inside your own jungle to avoid getting destroyed early on by Udyr.

Udyr is one of the only champions who can easily destroy Nocturne. If you have the possibility to pick another jungle champion, I would definitely suggest so.

VS

Vi

Medium

A medium match up.

Vi is very strong early against Nocturne, and her counter ganking potential is very high.

Try to set up effiecient counter ganks, and keep vision on Vi early on. She snowballs very hard, and can potentially destroy you if she gets ahead.

Try to block her viR.png or viQ.png in order to be able to 1v1 her. Should you face her alone in the jungle, you can easily 1v1 her if there is no one else around to support her.

Try to counter jungle her early on, due to her high mana costs, and higher hp loss in the jungle than Nocturne's.

VS

Volibear

Medium

A medium match up.

Volibear is a very good duellist and can easily destroy Nocturne early if played well.

You should focus on keeping good vision inside Volibears own jungle, as well as your own. He is very strong fighter early on, and becomes even stronger after he reaches lvl 6. Try to set up good counter ganks, and keep vision of his movements with wards.

Should you surprise him from a bush etc. You can duel him by blocking his volibeare.png.

VS

Warwick

Hard

A very easy match up.

The new Warwick is extremely strong even early on in 1v1 duel situations. You have to outsmart his spells and use your nocturneshroudofdarkness.png at right moment and range out of his warwicke.png to avoid getting feared.

Try to block his fear warwicke.png in duels to win him.
His jungle clear is relatively slow, and heavy mana usage. Try to counter jungle him early to render him useless during the early game.

After Warwick reaches lvl 6, his 1v1 potential and ganking potential becomes very high. Therefore, try to focus on him early on before he gets more items and becomes impossible for you to deal with.

VS

Xin Zhao

Medium

A medium match up.

Xin Zhao is a very good duellist.

Xin Zhao has a good early game 1v1 potential, ganking potential and jungle clear. However, Nocturne can 1v1 him early on as he is relatively squishy.

His counter ganking potential is very good, so always keep a vision of his movements.
Try to set up yourself in unwarded bushes, as he is unable to win you 1v1 if you surprise him. However, try to avoid 1v1's if he has a clear vision of you.

VS

Zac

Easy

A very easy match up.

Zac is a tank champion who has relatively weak early game.

Try to counter jungle him early, and counter gank him when necessary.

Keep vision on the side of the lanes, to avoid him using zacE.png to the ally lanes.
He is very weak against Nocturne, and you should definitely focus on destroying him early on in his jungle by stealing his buffs or possible killing him.

About Back to Top

I have been playing League of Legends since Season 2.

Nocturne was the first champion I bought, and I totally fell in love with his kit and play style. I always thought about making a guide, but it took me all these years to actually have enough motivation to write a guide like this :p

I hope you enjoy it and please give me constructive feedback! :)

P.S. I will be updating this guide on each patch :D
