Summoner Spells Back to Top

4.png14.png

Standard

This is the normal set of summoner spells you are taking with you. It gives you a bit more kill pressure in lane, pre level 6 and still helps you secure some kills later into the game. It also helps shutting down any regeneration which is kinda nice against people with a lot of lifesteal and such.

4.png3.png

Anti-Kite Combo

You can take this against certain kite matches with spamable spells like Cassiopeia69.png or Ahri103.png. Especially for the former it makes it much easier to stick to here if she flashes away or manages to stun you. Kite mages can be a pain in the ass to lane against

Masteries Back to Top

Most of this is fairly obvious I think. You can go Intelligence instead of Precision if you rather have your skills up more often than doing a bit more damage. Both are equally good

Q is your bread and butter skill. It should be fairly obvious that you max this skill first. What you max second can depend on matchup. You can do better with your E since you deal more ability damage and the fear gets longer, however, a lower CD on your shield sometimes help enormously.

I prefer maxing W second, because it also gives me more attack speed, make block more spells, which in turns means even more attack speed! Nocturne's DPS is pretty high, even after you blew up a squishy champion. And with that I like to abuse that. However, maxing E second has its merits against immobile mages like 30.png since it keeps them controlled longer

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Most of the time the best option
A bit more risky. Watch out for your mana
    Dodge their shit

Core Items

start oneshotting with those two items
Very useful. Not 100% necessary all the time

Situational Items

    Lifesteal and AD? Sounds good!
    Expensive, but good
Enemy laner is AP? This is your best friend
    If tanks become problematic
    Crit Nocturne, see below
    Good against other Assassins
BT is better, still a great item
Used to be great. Is not anymore
Alternative option for the LW items
    For all the diving needs

The Nightmare of the midlane

The builds for Nocturne are very simple since they are built for one thing and one thing only. Pick one guy, and that guy is not allowed to play League anymore. Every time you have ult you go in and kill him and your item choices should reflect that.

The Core:

3077.png
Starting with Tiamat you basically get another additional damage spell for your combo. This is the time that makes your burst go from impressive to one shot. The AoE also layers nicely over your passive and later your Hydra gives a nice amount of AD.

3142.png
Basically everything you want for Nocturne. High AD, Armor Pen, CDR, Movement speed. Since your oneshot combo always involves at least one autoattack this item helps you reducing the damage time of your combo. You should rush this item first in 90% of the matchups, regardless if you are winning or losing. It is just the best item on Nocturne, period.
3147.png
This item is could be considered core, however, it feels most of the time when I played without it, I could still reliable one shot the enemy carry. This item definitely helps big times with it and also gives tanks a bit of a harder time, be it because of the armor pen or because of the passive. If you are behind you might want to consider defensive options first.

The Variables:

3072.png
You can say about this item what you want. It is just plainout solid and the shield is nice. It gives you a lot of AD and Lifesteal! A bit more damage and a bit more defense! Perfect!

3155.png3156.png
Hexdrinker/Maw of Malmortius are literally two items designed to help AD assassins survive in the midlane. If everything wants to burst you, this will help you keeping you alive. There is really no downside to this item, so I can only recommend it whenever you struggle against AP champions. They are amazing
3078.png
Gives you tons of damage... nuff said! Next point... Ok I might should mention that this is never an item you should get early into the game. I understand the notion of having the midgame powerspike with Trinity Force, however, you are very well able to destroy anybody without it. The phage passive does not help you as much since your already got your Q trails. The Sheen has exactly one use and while crit/AS/MS is nice from the Zeal part, those are not the most important stats on Nocturne. It is fine to add if you feel like you need a bit more UNF to your combo
3153.png
Blade used to be a pretty great item for the longest time on Assassin Nocturne. It was almost at a point where you would go a Zed built with Yoomu's into Blade for maximum damage potential. However, then they first started to nerf the active damage and then hit the passive portion as well. You can still run it if you run into a tank heavy team and you would rather have more DPS than burst, but otherwise this item is rather subpar.
3035.png3036.png3033.png
Three items that are only a show of the power that the old Last Whisper used to give. But since we have to work with what we got, these are one of your best chances of dealing with tanks. I find myself, getting Mortal Reminder whenever I face something like a Mundo or a Swain, rather than Dominik's Regards against any other tanks. It might be just me, but it feels the next item fits better
3071.png
I hate tanks, and this is the ax I wanna kill them with. It shreds armor and gives me a bit of health to also be able to take more damage, since the fights will be more dragged out. Life steal synergizes pretty well with a good health pool, since you won't die as quickly to utilize life steal to give you overall more health back since you have a bigger pool
3053.png
This item is probably broken as fuck right now. I wouldn't always get it, but if the enemy team is rather burst heavy it is rather helpful to get in those scenarios. Syngerizes well with Trinity Force, so keep that in mind.
3026.png
You are prone to diving in and having troubles getting out again as Nocturne. GA might helps you with either staying alive or using the revive to turn the fight around. Still handle it with caution. You don't want to waste the revive
3812.png
Death's Dance is basically a worse version of Bloodthirster on Nocturne. The Item by itself is incredibly good, however, you do not really make full use of the spellvamp, since you use a lot of Autotattacks for damage. However, this is far from a bad item on Nocturne and the stats it gives make it a solid pickup, even though BT might be better in my eyes. You can go tank boots (Ninja/Mercury/Swifties) and pick this up to get 40% CDR

Crit Nocturne!!!

Note here, as with all crit builds are freaking expensive and should only be built if you are extremely ahead and just want to keep pushing the advantage by a fuckton. However, Crit items tend to give less utility then the rest of the items you would usually built on Nocturne. Since there is also a limited amount of viable options those will naturally mix with the items shown above.

3031.png
This item should be bought at some point when playing Crit Nocturne. It is fairly obvious why, since every built revolves around this item. Get it. It's great!

3508.png
This item gives actually pretty great stats for Nocturne in general. Crit, CDR and high AD are all useful stats that you could probably play on him even without going into crit built. However, to really get your money for this item you probably should get other crit items with it. If you attempt to go Crit Noc, this is most likely your first rush

3094.png
Used to be much better, but now this item just does not scale well at all. It gives still a decent boost in damage and if you don't crit (which kinda is the point of this built) this item will do more damage than Shiv. Otherwise...

3087.png
... Get this item. It just is all around better right now. AoE damage, the single target damage is also higher when you crit and its stats are also superior. It also helps more with split pushing so that is another good advantage of this item, since you are pretty good at that as well.

Why Crit Noc?

Since Nocturne's main damage source is his autoattacks, you can built him as a melee ADC similar to Master Yi. It doesn't really hurt his assassination potential either, since the ratios on R and Q are still pretty high. Speaking of Q, it gives more AD than a BF sword, meaning as long as you stand on your trail, Nocturne has extremely high AD, meaning his crits can turn out to be pretty high. You still won't built it every game since this built has a way high item cost and has a way worse built path. But it works very well!

VS

Ahri

Medium

A bit of a tricky one. Spellshield her ahriseduce.png to get onto her. Always. Try to maybe get some kill pressure onto her after she used her ahriorbofdeception.png. Hit her with nocturneduskbringer.png to go in and nocturneunspeakablehorror.png her to make her your bitch. She likes that according to the internet. Things get more difficult after lvl 6

VS

Anivia

Hard

She builds rather tanky and has ways to make your life miserable. It is hard to nocturneshroudofdarkness.png a good Anivia flashfrost.png. If you manage to try to spellshield the burst part, but you still will take tons of damage. It is probably smarter to try and nocturneshroudofdarkness.png her frostbite.png. Generally, try to outroam her and search your advantage elsewhere

VS

Annie

Medium
nocturneshroudofdarkness.png everything that would stun you. Despite that, just watch out. She is actually pretty tanky for a mage. She is however still missing out on most of her damage if you nocturneshroudofdarkness.png her infernalguardian.png
Highly recommend rushing 3155.png

VS

Azir

Medium

Do not play passive. You have to take control of him before he gets some items. I experiment taking nocturneunspeakablehorror.png lvl 1 to make his life hell, but definitely go Q-E lvl 2 and go all in on him. Keep him down as much as possible before you start roaming.

nocturneshroudofdarkness.png his azirR.png to make his life miserable. His wall does not stop your nocturneparanoia.png dash

VS

Brand

Medium

Don't overcommit early game. Brand is very strong in that regard. nocturneshroudofdarkness.png his brandblaze.png if possible. But due to the nature of his kit, almost every opening skill of his can be nocturneshroudofdarkness.png worthy. Just watch out that he doesn't bait you into wasting it

VS

Cassiopeia

Hard

As of now one of the matchups I had the most troubles with. nocturneshroudofdarkness.png her cassiopeiapetrifyinggaze.png and if that is down, whatever poison skill she might have. Max nocturneunspeakablehorror.png to get her under control more easily.

VS

Diana

Hard

Abuse her early pre lvl 6. You have somewhat of a fighting chance against her, even though you go into her comfort zone. Try poking her down with your Q before committing. It can be worth to nocturneshroudofdarkness.png her dianaE.png in certain situations. However, post lvl 6 you should always aim to nocturneshroudofdarkness.png her dianaQ.png to deny her the R reset. That gives you the best fighting chance.

VS

Ekko

Hard

Once again a champion with no clear spellshield options. You should try to not get hit by a return Q anyways so if you do you probably have no option to use your nocturneshroudofdarkness.png anyways. Your best bet is when he tries to ekkoR.png into you for the damage or his E. I have heard some people try to nocturneshroudofdarkness.png his ekkoW.png, but I would only recommend that if you are running away. The shield is still giving him an advantage over you if you fight in that area

VS

Fizz

Easy

Another easy matchup. nocturneshroudofdarkness.png his fizzmarinerdoom.png either when the skillshot flies onto you (preferred) or when the shark is going to come up. Otherwise nocturneshroudofdarkness.png his fizzjump.png

Max nocturneshroudofdarkness.png second

VS

Galio

Easy

Shred him to pieces. He is an MR stacking monster. You deal AD damage. He also sucks at roaming. Rip him a new one

VS

Gangplank

Hard

Quite the skill matchup. Depending on how he levels and you level. This can be either an easy or a hard lane for you. Try to fight him early and nocturneshroudofdarkness.png his raisemorale.png as often as possible. After all it's his main source of damage. Try to go all in on lvl 2 with Q>E since he probably levels his barrels and not his oranges on lvl 2. Otherwise, just try to bully him as much as possible in lane.

VS

Heimerdinger

Medium

Farm under turret and nocturneshroudofdarkness.png the ch1concussiongrenade.png. In Lane there is nothing you can do against him as a melee Assassin. Try to either roam or wait for him to fuck up. He is not a difficult champion to bear, but not really a pleasant matchup anyways

VS

Jayce

Hard

A pretty hard matchup, since he has safe early game with poke and a disengage with his jayceE.png. Try to go in on lvl 3 with all your skills having one point. Let him overstep before you Q into E and then W his jayceE.png. Otherwise try to spellshield his Q when he tries to poke and you have no intention of fighting him. This matchup takes a lot of experience to play a well, but if you get the drill I would say it is not as difficult anymore.

VS

Karma

Hard

Karma is probably the kind of champion that is extremely hard to play against. She has sustain with her karmasoulshield.png and karmachakra.pngkarmaspiritbond.png to keep you on a leash (pun intended). Besides that she also has poke and an insane early game. This woman will take none of your shit. Wait for her to fuck otherwise you just farm up as much as possible and look for kills someplace else.

Note: You cannot nocturneshroudofdarkness.png the snare of karmaspiritbond.png when you are already leashed

VS

Karthus

Easy

Karthus is weak early and relies on spells to kill you while being immobile. It is not a problem to kill you and him. Also you take vision away from him so he might reacts late to a low enemy. Overall not a difficult matchup. Max E second cause the control over him is very valuable. nocturneshroudofdarkness.png his fallenone.png for obvious reasons

VS

Kassadin

Medium

He is not really great against AD assassins. But he gets fairly tanky. All in early. nocturneshroudofdarkness.png whatever he maxes first (you will notice it by what does the most damage :P) He is not easy to keep down so just go wild. If you can make him your bitch he will be useless the rest of the game.

However, if you fuck up, you can try and play catchup but he will prolly will win that race. Don't let it get that far. (and it shouldn't be a problem, but the risk is still very much there!)

VS

Katarina

Medium

This can definitely go either way. 100% skillmatchup. Don't let her poke you too much. The one who gets advantage first somehow, wins the lane. You are both great roamers, but you are better early game. You can nocturneshroudofdarkness.png a single tick of her deathlotus.png. It might save your life in certain situations. Max nocturneunspeakablehorror.png second to force her to shadowstep.png defensively

VS

Kayle

Hard

Kayle is your worst nightmare. Her ult is cruel. She has no clear spell pattern to nocturneshroudofdarkness.png. The only good thing is, that she has to scale. Meaning if you manage to get to her in the early levels you might can squeeze out a victory. However, even if you can capitalize on her weakness, her ult is still the stuff the holes in your wall are made off.

VS

LeBlanc

Medium

Many people regard her as a hard matchup, but really it is way less problematic than people think. Let her leblancchaosorb.png you and then nocturneshroudofdarkness.png when she tries to leblancslide.png. You will cleanse both instances of damage without any problems. And like that you survive in lane. You can even try and kill her later into the game.

Given however, it is not a lane you are expected to win. It is not a lane you have to lose either. If you know how to play it, it is pretty 50/50

VS

Yasuo

Easy

Is worse than you early game. Is also very prone to overextending even more so if he thinks that he can knock you up. nocturneshroudofdarkness.png either his 3rd yasuoQ.png or whichever ability his team throws at you to knock you up.

Max nocturneshroudofdarkness.png second

VS

Zed

Easy

Great matchup for Nocturne. nocturneshroudofdarkness.png his ultimate, but play safe in the early levels. Poke him with Q through your minions

Max nocturneshroudofdarkness.png second

Why Nocturne Mid? Back to Top

"Lot's of crazy talk dude!? Nocturne is a jungler why would you bring him mid? You are idiotic, I am leaving, done, this is why humanity is a shitfest..."

Well, after mr. dudebro23 has told me his opinion I will gladly explain. There are several reasons why Nocturne mid is not only viable but a good options:

1) Good Matchups:

This is also the reason why, this is a midlane guide and not a toplane guide. Nocturne has tons of matchups where he either is really good against (Zed, Yasuo, Fizz), but also a lot of matchups where he is very passable and is capable of using his sustain and high burst to keep lane dominance.

2) Gold

Even though it became better over the last few years in how much gold and experience a jungler gets, it's still that a laner has in the greater scheme of things more farm and more gold. To build Nocturne full damage you need gold as for any damage built, really. That's why jungle Nocturne's often go for a bruiser build, because tank items are generally more stat efficient.

3) You still don't sacrifice your gank potential

Nocturne is still a champion with good roaming potential and high burst and sustain damage. His ultimate is also a great tool for applying pressure on the whole map. And all those tools are still available in the middle to almost the same extend. You still have to place a very deep ward to see a Nocturne gank coming be it midlane or jungle.

4) Fun

Plain and simple, it's fun. It's off meta so people have no clue what to expect and there is a certain satisfaction in breaking the meta a bit. You can try it and see for yourself. It is really not as bad as you may think.

How to Oneshot somebody? Back to Top

Probably the question you all asked when you read that you can do it. And it is really not that difficult, it just takes a bit of practice and movement prediction. As you may or may not know, Nocturne is able to cast his nocturneduskbringer.png while he is midflight of his nocturneparanoia.png.

The difficult part is, predicting the enemies movement where they will be when you are about to land as well as the cast time you have on your nocturneduskbringer.png means you should cast it shortly before you land on them. However, once you get that down prepare for a lot of damage.

First off, as you will notice your Q does a lot of damage by itself, but it will also give you the AD boost it gives. Once you land you are on top of them you want to press Hydra to apply more damage before finishing it off with an autoattack. The autoattack will apply your passive, which means you get you get the items you have + nocturneduskbringer.png's Bonus AD amplified by another 20%.

If they don't have any defenses against this they are most likely dead. One person less to worry about, now you can go ahead and shred the enemy team to pieces cause your Autoattack DPS is still very high.

One last thing to note:

Do not engage with Assassin Nocturne. Like every Assassin is relatively squishy and can die easily when he is focused. While his nocturneshroudofdarkness.png allow him to block key CC, you better not risk getting stunlocked regardless. Be smart and make catches or use the ult to engage after somebody went in already

About me Back to Top

Hello, I am Karukos and play on the EUW servers. I have tons of fun with this pick, after a friend suggested me trying it out. I have playing it since Season 4 and will probably continue to play it. If you are interested to see how Nocturne mid looks like or what his damage looks like, I made a montage already and probably will do more videos in the future:

I hope you enjoy my guide and I will try to add and correct things as time passes. So please give me feedback on what to improve and ask questions so I might work them in here (or answer them)
Have a nice day :)
