Summoner Spells Back to Top

Bro sometimes you just need to pop GHOST ULT AND JUST DELETE SOMEONE. You ever get that itch? Can't do that with flash. If you need to survive UGLY PEOPLE WHO HAVE AN EXECUTE TAKE EXHAUST. Works just as well AS IGNITE WHEN DELETING SOMEONE. If you have ghost you get to become the embodiment of BARRY SANDERS AND RUN THROUGH THE ENEMY TEAM AS IF THEY WERE THE BROWNS. Also makes you UNGANKABLE past 6. ALSO ENABLES YOU DOUBLE KILLS IF YOU'RE EXTREMELY MANLY AND DON'T CARE BOUT NO INDEPENDENT JUNGLER. Also remember that ghost cooldown is lower than flash cooldown so its totally WORTH to burn ghost for enemy flash and DON'T WORRY KEEP CHASING, you can MURDER the enemy if they flashed in the middle of the lane because ghost GIVES YOU THE POWER OF USAIN BOLT and allows you to catch whoever just flashed because GHOST>FLASH when covering ground. Imagine this, on d-day when you are STORMING THE GERMANS do you want GHOST or FLASH?

59_64.pngThis man basically can shut you down because of his DEATH ARENA/DUNK. If you want you can't take flash but you are advised to take Ghost because YOU'RE A VI-KING NOT A VI-QUEEN. Remember to save ghost if he does DUNK you and just wait until it collapses to ghost at their carry.

Get exhaust if you feel you will be camped or dove a lot, I prefer ignite however exhaust can shut down a lot of people like  92_64.png 64_64.png 76_64.png Basically Anybody with an execute you can exhaust them before they execute you and you can turn on them and go ham. Ignite + E = GG Do Simple math e damage + Ignite - Their current HP

As of 7.2 ghost has slightly been nerfed, this nerf itself obviously gives you less movement speed up front, that being said won't affect olaf very much since he gets a crazy amount of movement speed from ult anyway. That being said you might actually be able to catch up to pesky mid laners that also run flash ghost.

Masteries Back to Top

What are you when you play olaf? A BEARDED, PILLAGING, VIKING MAN! What do you want to do to their carries? MURDER THEM! How do you do that? SPAMMING TRUE DAMAGE. Why? BECAUSE THE WANNABE CARRIES HAVE UNDER 2k HP. To Spam true damage you just gotta get REAL LOW and then you SLAP PEOPLES' SHIT FASTER and HEAL while doing that you MAKE TRUE DAMAGE COME OFF COOLDOWN FASTER. Do you want to ATTACK EVEN FASTER or have TRUE DAMAGE BE A LONGER COOLDOWN? Should be obvious. Do you want to CHANNEL YOUR INNER ZED AND ASSASSINATE SOMEONE or Would you rather GET HEALTH FROM KILLING YOUR ENEMIES? You decide! Next keystone is to KEEP YOU ALIVE and then MURDER THEM! Remember when I said you wanted to slap peoples shit at a very high rate? Well this keystone choice here is a choose your own adventure. DO YOU MURDER ATLEAST 3 PEOPLE ON THE ENEMY TEAM PER GAME? Do You Stay in a LONG ASS fight for what seems like forever? If you said yes to either of those, TAKE BATTLE TRANCE, it's almost as if riot wanted to make a keystone JUST FOR YOU! Next you want % pen, as previously stated "PENETRATING THEIR VERY LOW ARMOR SCORE IS VASTLY MORE DAMAGING BOTH TO THEIR DIGNITY AND THEIR HEALTH BAR". The Last stuff of this tree is to KEEP YOU ALIVE and then MURDER the WHOLE TEAM while SWEATING PROFUSELY since you are quite low but somehow STILL ALIVE. Resolve tree you get Resists to LAUGH AT THEIR BAD ATTEMPT AT KILLING YOU NOTICE HOW I SAID ATTEMPT! Next keystone is for MEN who want to BASIC ATTACK YOU instead of being MANLY and using abilities. The Last stuff of this tree is to synergize with KEEPING YOU ALIVE!

UNMANLY VERSION:
switching from cunning to ferocity because warlords bloodlust is amazing on olaf. getting your e off cooldown as well as just attacking more in general will keep you alive significantly longer than extra damage on q because you would always not max q and then this keystone doesn't help you much. Feast vs Fresh Blood, Basically freshblood is better early game but feast is also better early game, so if you have issues with sustain then take feast but freshblood will bring in the most bang for your mastery point buck. Lifesteal for this especially since you are going bloodlust, it become priority in masteries which means you dont have to buy lifesteal items and ignore them completely. Fervor is currently the best mastery at the moment. Unyielding is better than regen since you will be tougher to kill and the life you regain from lifesteal is more effective at keeping you alive. Tough skin no contest, runic armor, insight. Runic perfectly synergises with bloodlust since it is lifesteal along with olaffrenziedstrikes.png also stacks with perseverance which is why you take it.

7.5 update: Fervor is the best mastery at the moment, followed closely by thunderlords then grasp. Bloodlust nerf was huge because it enabled olaf to live longer in a fight but now it no longer is about extended fighting where fervor is.

You can invest an extra point in q earlier for the better slow, depending on if you need to trade with them slowed use the point early.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Decent sustain decent damage, Low sustain from spamming Q however.
My favorite and Overall best sustain start.
if you're feeling frisky you could start this.
this is not too bad of a start but you lack early sustain for your all ins.

Core Items

(El Classico) Ok at the moment after repeated nerfs. Goes best into armor stacking opponents.
(The Korean) Current favorite of korean olaf's. As well as myself. The sheer dps output is very high into squishier targets.
(Best enchantment NA) I prefer red smite as it gives the damage reduction as well as you can easily proc true damage on hit from your passive that being said they each have their own strengths.
(The Usual Suspects) Other Viable options for core, but they don't quite synergise the best with olaf. These are also good 2nd items or follow ups if you're snowballing and want to maintain your momentum not just good as core items.
(Usual Suspects Pt 2) These are also good 2nd items or follow ups if you're snowballing and want to maintain your momentum not just good as core items.

Situational Items

    always buy tabi period
Best tanky items on olaf for now
good options for survivability. Especially ga.
also a potential very good item.

Stat Priority Survivability>Damage>Resistances

Important thing to note too, is that you don't want to grab too many 'core' items because you're sacrificing tankiness for damage that you won't be able to utilize fully.

Item Comparison Chart<-issa link: Video Explains how to use this chart as well as explains the numbers. (the numbers mason)

I have been noticing a lot of people picking up triforce on olaf, I wholeheartedly recommend it as it allows olaf a mightier burst and slightly more damage potential. The sheen proc is so invaluable on olaf especially since you can pretty much proc it on cd with your various abilities. It's basically my new first core item as of late.

Core item we buy is also cleaver, gives you survivability through health and movement speed, as well as flat ad cdr and armor pen which is great in this day and age of armor stackers.

2nd item usually depends, If you are against a mainly ad team You're going to want to go deadmans, but if you're against a magic damage team spirit visage or maw should be your first buy. If you're snowballing you should look into buying out of the usual suspects category.

thornmail is also another really good item that can make you crazy tanky because of how little it costs, when combined with steraks or cleaver.

4th item depends on how well team fighting is going or split pushing is going. For instance If you aren't dying or really getting focused in a team fight you could get away with more damage. You just have to be smart about what type of damage item you're buying, Preferable look for one with any of the stat priorities across multiple stats.

If you're getting a tank item ask yourself some questions about the item. Do you want to do more damage (sunfire/thornmail), Do you want to die slow to adc's (Randuins). That type of thinking will get you to a destination of what item to pick.

5th item get the opposite of what you got last time. So if you went damage go tank if you went tank go damage. Doing this could allow you to stay alive longer (death's dance), or allow you to go out in a blaze of glory possibly trading 1 for 1 on the enemy adc/mid.

6th item Same as 4th  item pick tank or damage and go from there, be sure to ask yourself similar questions as far as what item to buy.

You want at most 3 damage items and 2 tanky items and boots. If you are behind you want 4 tank items 1 damage and boots. Just shift what you need to do around with your items but stay cdr capped if possible and maintain survivability that way you can remain tanky and live longer.

His Sustain is OP AS FK but your e makes trades go your way all game. Try to force him to auto attack you when his 3rd w attack is up that way he does damage to himself and takes your true damage. He can become unkillable if you allow him to get cs, shouldn't be a problem until he finishes his vamp scepter item. He is similar to tryndamere where if he gets the items he needs he could start to get out of control.

VS

Akali

Easy

Use Page 3

Can axe walk if possible
Usually you will always dominate this lane if it is equal or you are ahead, You can also consistently zone the akali for cs since she is melee and only has q to either harass you or cs. However, once she gets a large enough lead you basically can't do anything and she snowballs. My suggestion would be to try and build as much defense as possible, don't even bother finishing core item if she is starting to snowball it's not worth the gold. Just e her whenever she wants to get into range and then if she procs her q on you slow her and extend the trade until she gets to her turret.

VS

Camille

Medium

Use Rune Page 1

You want to max olafrecklessstrike.png since the e will go through her passive shields. Avoid maxing olafaxethrowcast.png as it plays into her passive and because she is a melee champion she has to walk in to camilleq.png you which means free olafrecklessstrike.png's for days. Avoid her camillew.png as it gives her some sustain but you should look to start trades with your e and if she continues to fight you activate olaffrenziedstrikes.png and get that e off cd asap. Her camillee.png is a dash so if you start the cast it will hit her after she jumps its pretty op. Her ult is situational, it's basically a free kill if she times it right with a gank, or you're low it can make things difficult. Bloodlust is very good into her as well because of her w and e cooldowns allows you to trade even if she gets the heal and just sustain through any damage she tries to put onto you.

VS

Cho'Gath

Medium

Use Page 2

This Is a highly skilled matchup. Pre 6 you dominate him very well because his sustain is too low for your harass. However as the lane phase drags on and on his sustain will be too much for you to handle. Your sustain is decent but his is much better. Bring ignite not exhaust his execute does TRUE DAMAGE OP and does about the damage a few swings of your e does. Avoid his Silence and you should be fine.

VS

Darius

Hard

Use Rune Page 1

This is a skill based matchup. For me I had to learn that I shouldn't be scared of darius once he hits 6. Early Game he is very potent however you can out dps him at level 1 because of your passive but be careful of his bleed. Once he is 3 be careful of the pull it can kill you. That being said if you get pulled just try to eq and auto him to see if he backs off. If he doesn't you may need to ghost away, if he does you will win the trade.  Look to poke him out with E's, try to mind game him into wasting his q on the wave and not hitting you. Watch his dariuscleave.png cooldown, if you can get him to use it and not hit you, hit him with everything that you've got. Watch out for his thunderlords proc. His ult is just too good in a 1v1 situation, you need to poke him down then all in him, watch out for his dariusaxegrabcone.png you could die if he pulls you.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Easy

Use Page 2

He has to expend health in order to last hit with q and he cannot brawl you at any point in the game. e him whenever he tries to be cheeky and melee the creeps. Once he hits 6 it will take a lot of sustain and damage for you to kill him, get titanic as he can't kill you in an all in. hide behind your creeps when he tries to q you. If you got the sustain be manly and take his q instead of letting him last hit and then sustain to deny him cs.

VS

Ekko

Medium

use page 2

Sike his passive was nerfed so now this lane is pretty easy, since even if you ult the man glides like he has mobi's. His speedup is whats really good. As far as the lane phase goes you can control the wave early on lvls 1-3 but once he gets all of his abilities he gets to control the wave. You essentially need to q e trade when you have only 2 stacks on you. This allows you to potentially bait him into trying to auto attack you and then you respond with the axe walk slow. Once he hits 6 you can try to all in him and hope that his ult doesn't go off. Otherwise if he ults and he isn't low enough to kill so the idea would be that you get him to waste ult with basic abilities and then use ult to kill him when his ult is down. You basically can't use ghost ult to catch up to him because he gets movement speed from his passive.

VS

Fiora

Medium

Use Page 1

This lane in terms of difficulty is still easy as all hell, You just need to be careful of zoning fiora and being near the creep line. If you can not let her proc her passive on you a lot you should be fine. Also look to have her waste her fiorariposte.png then trade hard with her. Your sustain is still much better than hers. Her fioradance.png is very good. Just play farther away from the creep wave and walk in to cs and you should be fine. He doesn't have anything besides fiorariposte.png and fioraq.png with range but fioraq.png can only ideally be activated 1 time in a trade so you should be fine when trading. Avoid extended trades as that will potentially kill you since her passive is better than yours in that regard.

Would like to emphasize that you want to avoid getting baited by fiorariposte.png just play relatively safe when you're being aggressive and you should have enough damage to just burst him.

VS

Gangplank

Medium
Use Rune Page 1

If this champ starts raisemorale.png all in him at level 1 you are guaranteed to win because his barrels don't do enough damage and he is wasting an auto attack on the barrel while you are attacking him along with slowing of olafaxethrowcast.png. If he starts parley.pngLIKE HE SHOULD, then just play normal don't axe walk him. Trade with him while q was used on a minion. Be wary of all ins since his  removescurvy.png heal a lot more than they used to. It is very difficult to honestly win this, maxing olafrecklessstrike.png might make this easier since you can get a lot of free damage off on him while he is trying to farm minions with parley.png. He does have true damage on his passive so be wary of getting too low. Hp early is recommended.

VS

Garen

Medium
Use Page 1.

You want to avoid all inning him at levels 1-3. The goal in lane phase is to trade with him, you don't even have to win the trade, but after that keep his passive down by hitting him with q. Whenever he tries to q silence you press your w before he silences you and you should win the trade and you can also further damage to him with your spells after the silence ends. Once he hits 6 he has major kill pressure on you so you need to constantly trade and keep your hp up, don't be afraid to w the creep wave either.

VS

Gnar

Easy

Use Page 1

This guy is really hard to kill in lane, however if you successfully axe walk him you get a nice advantage and try to stand behind your creeps if he q's you and position yourself away from the creep wave so that he can't get off free damage onto you. Basically stand outside of the creep wave walk in last hit walk out. Try to q>e him. Be wary of his passive he gets ~200hp from just transforming, you won't notice it in early levels but if you try to all in just before he transforms he gets op heal from transform. Avoid standing directly behind your creeps because q can hit you even if you stand behind your creep. His sustain is stupid, his damage is pitiful don't worry about it.

VS

Gragas

Medium
Use Rune Page 2
Try to axe walk him at level 1
His sustain is pretty good and cheap keep trading  or olaffrenziedstrikes.png some creeps so you can sustain better. If he e's into you, you need to axe walk him while e'ing and autoing as much as possible, try to force trades at little as possible only zone him if his q is down. He wins most trades because of his w so unless you can prolong a trade don't trade with him. More health makes his gragasdrunkenrage.png hit harder, I'd recommend getting 3133.png instead of 3044.png early game. 3155.png is also a really good buy here.

VS

Irelia

Medium
Use page 1

You have a very big advantage pre level 9 however the closer and closer she gets to 9 the more trades will go in her favor. You will be able to trade well with her early on but be warned not to get stunned under tower as that can be completely lane changing as far as that goes. When treading with her you want to q her after you e that way if she decides to q to you after you e she will be slowed and it will minimize the damage that she can do to you with her w active.  I HIGHLY SUGGEST getting randuins 2nd item. Randuins as an armor item is very strong against her.

VS

Jarvan IV

Medium
Use Page 1 Max olafrecklessstrike.png
His ult shuts down what your role is in a team fight very well. So well that you should consider getting 4.png. The reason why you might consider taking it is because it allows you to bypass his ult like you bypass cc with your ult. You shut his defensive mechanism down. In lane he is hard to deal with early game however because you have sustain and he doesn't and him stack armor is useless against true damage. If you can avoid him early game you will always outscale him in terms of total damage. Don't be afraid to get rough with him either because if you w and aa him a little bit longer than normal you will win a trade with him. When he ults you go all in if you are about the same hp because at lower hp you deal a lot more total dps than he does the lower your hp is. Your w plus passive inside of his ult forces him to either kill you quickly or lower the walls of his ult asap. Also keep in mind that when he ults you, you want to ult so you get the DAMAGE and that way if he tries to knock you up with his combo it won't cc you.

VS

Jax

Easy
Use Page 1
If he hits his sweet spot of level 6 and you don't have an advantage on him you will lose this lane because his trading is wayy too much for olaf to handle. That being said. Try to get him to start up an e and use q disengage him so you know its down. Don't let him retaliate much onto you and keep up your harassment. Sustain isn't that much of a factor here simply because damaging jax is more important than your own sustain. Get e at level 2 and just keep him on a defensive to build an advantage. Faster you get hp the faster you will win this lane.

VS

Jayce

Medium

Use Page 1

This lane is actually not as bad as it used to be, you can throw your q onto him and eventually if he pushes or uses a bunch of abilities he won't have the mana to trade a ton. Use that to your advantage and play safe until he gets near low on mana then go in heavy with the trading. You can queue up your olafrecklessstrike.png outside of range, just click it on him and olaf will walk to him and then olafrecklessstrike.png as soon as he gets into range of it. Do that whenever you suspect that he will jaycethunderingblow.png you away and you can get some free damage off as you get knocked back.

VS

Kayle

Medium

Use Page 3

This matchup also got a little easier since, kayle takes much longer to ramp up. The only real issue for this is after you've made a trade with the usual olafaxethrowcast.png then olafrecklessstrike.png combo her judicatorrighteousfury.png could get bad in the long run but hopefully you remember to pick up your axe and you can slow her on the way out. Longer the trade the more damage she will do. Look to proc thunderlords fast and get out. Once you get a few items your combo is going to hit like a truck while it will take kayle a little bit to actually do some damage to you.

VS

Kennen

Medium
Use Rune Page 3
Level 1-3 You win this matchup pretty hard.

Once it gets to level 4 you lose very hard. kennenbringthelight.png is your worst nightmare. kennenbringthelight.png+auto+activate=thunderlords instantly. It's so broken against you. However you need to buy a hexdrinker to deal with his magic damage then focus on finish hp items. Tabi will be enough armor to not care about his auto attacks. Once you become tankier than him you will win the lane. He has no sustain so that is very good for you so, just poke him down with  olafaxethrowcast.png   and you can all in.

VS

Kled

Easy

Use Rune Page 1 Can axe walk at level 1.

This matchup is fairly easy, even if you let kled hit you with q's all day as long as you avoid his kledw.pngyou will almost always trade better than he can. He basically has to walk into your threat range to trade well with you but, because of your kit you can simply out damage him or extend the trade so that you win it. What You should look to do is kill his passive and then once that is gone his mobility is fairly low and hes weak. Then you wanna run him down. Be sure not to overkill his passive and then waste spells and other things. Be careful though about letting him return to base to regain his passive that could potentially take a lot more work to get him into kill range. His kit seems good for all ins, but you're is significantly better in longer trades.

VS

Lee Sin

Medium

Use Page 1

zone him like you do most matchups and you can win, stay behind your creeps and try to not let him prolong trades pre level 3. If you can just eq him and walk away if he gets a q on you and he has shield he can just damage you for free and get away. You may win an all in depends on your health. If you time it properly you can not get cc'd by his ult and exhaust him so his ult does less damage and get away with a kill.

VS

Malphite

Easy
Use Rune Page 2
AXE WALK LEVEL 1
His sustain is really weak if you can draw out a fight. Your e is devastating to him because it bypasses his armor. Try to focus on keeping his passive down. When you trade you want to q him and auto attack and then e last so that way there is little to no shield to take the brunt of your e.  At early levels don't be afraid to auto him a bunch, most malphs don't have a lot of early game presence  Be warned that his ult is perfect to supplement a gank. Remember to sustain his q's so that he can't just poke you down the whole lane phase.

VS

Maokai

Easy

Use Rune Page 2

His sustain is ok against you however he does damage in bursts you do damage in a shorter burst but he lacks dps whereas you get dps from passive and w. If he forces a trade just simply slow him with q and auto and e. Don't let him get an auto off on the creeps without punishing him with an e. His passive is how he sustains to if you e him while he is autoing he gets less from his sustain. Cleaver goes well into him.

VS

Mordekaiser

Easy

Use Page 3

This is a fairly easy matchup. Simply put mordekaiser can't force a trade with you, so because of that, you get to trade with him on your own terms. That being said you pretty much trade while either his mordekaisermaceofspades.png is on cd or, you walk away from his 3rd stack mordekaisermaceofspades.png. Since olafaxethrowcast.png slows, morde can't close the gap and apply his 3rd stack mordekaisermaceofspades.png onto you. Because of this mechanic you get to have the momentum in the lane and you're the one who gets to set the pace. If you trade with him enough, you are almost always able to come out on top. Just don't let him poke you too much with mordekaisersyphonofdestruction.png and this lane is easy. Also you can proc thunderlords much faster than he can.

VS

Nasus

Easy
Use Rune Page 3

The longer and longer the lane goes the more stacks he will get on his q. Olaf does a good job of denying him early on because you just stand in his creeps and e him when he goes to hit with q. Try not to push the lane because it will become a free lane if he is pushed to tower. That said farm like singed if you are at his tower and that will put a ton of pressure onto his tower. Take his blue/red if he is at his tower too. As he gets stacks on his q the better he will be able to trade. That being said he can't trade very well anyways but his itemization will be what dictates how well he trades. For example if he opts for armor and not getting hp you will destroy him when you trade. EASIEST MATCHUP NA

VS

Nautilus

Easy

Use page 2

This is easy, auto attack him and use q on him while his shield is up, use true damage when his shield is down. In an all in you should win since he doesn't have a lot of sustain. In a team fight ignore him and dive the carries. Axe walking him at 1 is effective if he doesnt have shield. You basically play around shield this game. Consider getting spirit instead of maw as your 2nd item.

VS

Olaf

Medium

Only Thing More OP than you, is YOU!

Start cloth Max W after E Get Lifesteal/giants and win the lane.

VS

Pantheon

Medium

Use Page 1

This lane is semi hard because of his zoning ability with pantheon_throw.png. However in all ins you tend to win them but be careful of his crit from his pantheon_heartseeker.png, because that can kinda act as an execute. When he leaves push tower like a mofo. See Tips and Tricks section for tower pushing. If you want to trade with him you gotta slow him with olafaxethrowcast.png and then olafrecklessstrike.png him pick up your axe and olafaxethrowcast.png as you walk away, if he stuns you and starts channeling pantheon_heartseeker.png walk past him so you're not in the cone and just wail on him until he goes away. You have sustain he doesn't so use this to your advantage. Just poke him down with olafaxethrowcast.png and you should be fine.

VS

Poppy

Medium

Use Page 1 MAX E

So this is a fairly easy matchup, You have to make sure you 100% deny her passive pickup, if you do this you can hardcore trade with her for a while. You literally don't have to worry about poppyparagonofdemacia.png stopping you, you should max olafrecklessstrike.png here because poppy is only good as a tank but she tends to be fairly resists heavy so knowing that she tends to not stack hp items first. In a fight you simply don't walk over her poppydevastatingblow.png and you win all trades/all in's. Don't use olafragnarok.png while you are mid air you will literally waste the whole ult. Get spirit visage/mr/sustain first, poppy has no innate sustain like you do so when you get low you can olaffrenziedstrikes.png off of creeps. Be mindful of her poppyheroiccharge.png stun while trading if she gets you good you get a full rotation onto you which can be harmful. Just sit on the creeps and you should be fine all lane, don't take her passive auto attack for free either have her use it on cs and while she uses it olafaxethrowcast.pngand olafrecklessstrike.png her after you closed the gap, then run onto her shield. If she is running to it while you q, you can slow her so you get there first pick up axe slow again and then reckless swing her.

VS

Quinn

Medium

Use Rune Page 1

This has actually became much easier since you can poke her with  olafaxethrowcast.png and then eventually all in her, however don't allow her to auto you very much otherwise it will make lane phase a lot harder. That being said, Poke as much as possible. Try not to shove the lane very hard.

VS

Renekton

Medium

Use Rune Page 1

Pre level 3 you whip his ass after level 3 if he controls when to trade he whips your ass. Try to not let him do his whole e in stun you q you e out. If he doesn't do that you will always win the trade. If he buys armor first hes dumb he should know that you're a MAN and you max e not q. Force trades with q e and poke him down easy. If he uses rage q on a wave punish him by forcing a fight.

VS

Rengar

Easy

Use Rune Page 1

Walk up to wave, dance in wave, e him whenever he tries to ruin your dance party/last hit. His sustain is only in short bursts so you can poke him down a lot faster than he can poke you. When he is doing his whole brush dance simply stand close to the wall and last hit if he last hits by jumping simply eing him and qing him and chasing him. Keep track of his empower stacks so that if he does empower q you, you can back away or be MANLY and all in him.

VS

Riven

Medium

Use Rune Page 3

Fickle matchup top; its easy at times its hard at times. When trading with her early try to have her waste her q on the creeps that way she can't knock you up. Her W range is lower than your E. When she shields use q and auto before you e her so that it does as much damage to her hp as possible. Once she hits 6 try to time exhaust and killing her, that way when you can kill her you have her exhausted so she can't kill you with ult. Don't stay in the lane when you are 25% hp she will flash ult w kill you.

VS

Rumble

Easy

Use Rune Page 2

Consider axe walking him if he comes to lane with little sustain.
He hardly has any sustain so use that to your advantage. What you need to do here is hit him hard pre-3 and then wait for him to overheat then go ham on him. Be mindful of chasing him through his ult, you shed resists when ulting so it will in turn do more damage to you than normal.

VS

Ryze

Easy

Use Rune Page 2

Axe walk him at level 1.
What you gotta do in order to trade in this matchup is to hit him before he gets his rune prison. Once he gets the snare you gotta get beefy and then force trades with him. If he uses his snare on a creep go ham. He isn't mobile so he can't do much to you once you engage. What you gotta do is hit an axe run towards him pick up axe hit him again with axe e him and kite him to his tower. Once you hit 6 you can poke him down with q until hes around 500 hp and then if you hit a q you ghost ult ignite kill him.

VS

Shen

Medium
Use Rune Page 1
Axe walk him at level 1.
This is a skill matchup simply because of his burst compared to yours plus his w, his sustain is alright and he has no mana. However that being said he doesn't have an execute so you can bait him by getting pretty low and just out sustaining his upfront burst and kill him. Watch out for his taunt rotation as that can do too much damage to you and you can't retaliate.

VS

Shyvana

Easy
Use Rune Page 3
Force trades often as he has no sustain, e him whenever he wants to get a creep. If he marks you with his e you gotta prolong the trade in order to have won the trade. E him as much as possible pretty easy lane. Hydra/Belt rush.

VS

Singed

Easy

Use Rune Page 1

Easy lane again just e him when he comes to the creeps try to not chase him too much, your sustain is better than his but be extremely careful of all ins because poison ticks even after he is dead.

VS

Sion

Easy

Use Rune Page 1

Easy lane, Look to avoid getting constantly barraged by his e q combo, If he starts his Q get out of the aoe or dance around it, you have very good pressure on him early because he lacks sustain and he has low base values to makeup for his scaling w. Control the minion wave and don't allow him to cs for free.

VS

Swain

Medium

Use Rune Page 2

Axe walk him at level 1.
This lane is pretty simple after the rework, works similarly to nasus e max, make him choose to use his q on you or the wave and then go from there, if he chooses you, w the wave and sustain up, if he q's the wave pressure him off the cs. Once he hits 6 he is harder to kill but eventually you can outsustain him and he will run out of mana. Just be careful of all inning him when he does have ult and has mana for sustain its incredibly hard to kill him while he is in ult form.

VS

Teemo

Medium

Use Rune Page 3

Axe walk him at level 1.
Poke him down, let him push the lane with his e and just keep poking with q. Once he is low enough you can walk to him and e him and walk away. You have sustain he tends to not have any. Once 6 do the ryze thing where if hes under 500 hp go ham.

VS

Trundle

Medium
Use Rune Page 1

He hits a lot harder with thunderlords than you do at level 1. Don't underestimate his q damage during a prolonged trade. His sustain is similar to cho's where it gets ramped up around level 9.

VS

Tryndamere

Easy

Use Rune Page 1

Axe walk him at level 1 if he comes to lane with little sustain.
He starts off ridiculously easy but he could present a problem given enough farm for items, his itemization these days is pretty garbage so you only have to worry once it hits late game. With ignite you can control how this lane goes. Watch out for early op as fk crits it can decide who wins this lane.

VS

Udyr

Easy

NO AXE WALK CLOTH START CONSIDER FLAT MR RUNES

Watch out for godyr q at level 1 does stupid amount of damage. Wait a few levels before going too aggressive on him. As long as you can e him and keep autoing him you will most likely come out on top when trading. Could go with a greedier build in this lane since he doesn't maintain a lot of kill pressure right away.

VS

Vladimir

Easy

Use Rune Page 2

Axe walk him at level 1.
His sustain isn't as high as yours is early levels to try to wait for him to q a minion after axe walking him and eing him whenever possible.  Once he gets some sustain just keep q slowing and eing him.

VS

Volibear

Medium

Use Page 1

Axe walk him at level 1.
His sustain from passive is op as fk, but axe walking him at level 1 should trigger his passive. Try to trade with him in quick short bursts because the longer you trade the more damage his w will do to you and it is an execute. Once he gets a warmogs or whatever he rushes, you should have core items. Normally you'd think oh he does physical damage which is true but you want a higher sustain than you want defense in this lane so that even if he bites you you can sustain right back up.

VS

Warwick

Medium

Use Rune Page 2

Axe walk him at level 1.
His sustain is really good but the only problem with it, is that he either has to auto attack which he can't because of your e or he has to q you which does op damage but costs a lot of mana over time. Your sustain yes it requires you to auto attack but you are the anti-melee champ here not him. At 6 if he ults you and can't kill you let him ult you but if he ults you can he can kill you ult in response. Hydra/Cowl rush.

VS

Wukong

Medium

Use Page 1

no longer the easiest lane as olaf, since wu's build pathing was opened by changes, he outranges you and can outtrade you, if he keeps out trading you, he can kill you with gap closer and ult even if you ult. Focus on beating him in trades and then the matchup becomes a lot easier, you no longer can sit on the creep line and damage him without losing. Try to poke him down with q if possible until you can all in him. You do win extended trades but it's just an issue of him using his w to get away for free.

VS

Yasuo

Easy

Use Rune Page 1

Axe walk him at level 1.
Video says it all

VS

Yorick

Medium

Use page 2

Yorick after rework, is SIGNIFICANTLY easier to lane against. What he brings to the table now are, just op minions with minor sustain. At level 1 you win this here easily, that is considering he doesn't have any minions, since the cooldown of his Q is so long compared to olafaxethrowcast.png you can still axe walk him effectively. However once he does get points into each of his skills this is where his kit comes together. He can effectively trap you with his w, which by the way controls how/how long trades go either in your favor or his, use his e to mark you and get his ghouls to run you into the ground since they jump like elise spiders. His sustain is very minor to the point where if you have level 1 olafrecklessstrike.png you can easily just e him 1 time and the health he gained gets lost in the trade. His ideal rotation is a very short burst that has you run away as ghouls chase you. His w is very powerful in terms of both stopping your ult as well as stopping you from chasing him. His ult is lackluster in terms of the 1v1 since its there like an empowered minion, so it doesn't do a whole lot of upfront damage but overtime i can easily see the ult doing some damage. This is overall an okay matchup since yorick can't use range a whole lot, and he is melee.

Intro (Read This First) Back to Top

Hi, and thank you for visiting my olaf guide. This short intro is to help you get the most up to date information as possible.

If you would like to see olaf patch to patch look no further than the "Season 7" Section. This will give you a small short sweet rundown of the various changes and how they may affect olaf.

I need to redo the urgot lane phase matchup since he was reworked.

Guide is up to date and everything else is pretty self explanatory so thanks for reading my guide and see you on the rift.

Guide update log stuff Back to Top

Matchups are all that is left, honestly most meta top matchups should be good.  Kled and Yorick crossed off of the list and have been updated, be sure to look at the team fight and skirmish guide as that has also been updated.

If you want a more technical reason why sterak's is your core item read the ending of the items tab, I have a few paragraphs worth of reasoning.

Matchup videos are going to be designed to where you can watch them after you have locked in olaf so you'll get runes and masteries, as well as how you'll find success in the lane. It will need a ton of work to go through all of the champions.

Items in my google drive is updated for 6.22 I redid the numbers and changes I think as a summation maw will be a lot stronger on olaf that it used to be so be ready to see that item like every game perhaps.

Abilities Video has been added, as well as the preseason/season 6 masteries update has been added.

Forgot to add jungle items whoops. (added them)

Lane Phase video is uploaded, wait on it to process.

camille matchup is written up, check it out, read it, relax, shes ggez.

rewrote the runes and added the yasuo matchup along with it's video. Soon i'll have to do a sweep of the matchups section but I think that will be taken care of as soon as I start making the matchup videos.

Sion Matchup is updated along with the matchup video.

Keep in mind that, the items are updated pretty much constantly on the google drive link, most likely they are more up to date than the item section of the guide is.

updated the axewalk video, can't believe that video is so old :)

I added tryndamere matchup video not sure who is next i just make them as i play them.

Need to update urgot matchup its on the todo list.

Season 7 Back to Top

Really need to start working on the matchups, I've kinda been abiding my time trying to figure out how exactly i want to go about releasing them be it 1 at a time or maybe meta champs and then go onto fringe champs, maybe matchups I see often. I just need some time to figure out how I want to get you the content while you load up into game making them as quick as possible, <1 min 30 secs.

patch 7.4: fervor buffed, warlords nerfed, cleaver nerfed slightly.  I'll take a more in depth look at fervor, and with cleaver I'm not too sure which 1st item is the best now, I'm thinking that it might be triforce now.  I Will update the guide after toying with stuff.

patch 7.5: bork looking really juicy, warlords changed,im not completely sold on the rework so im looking into other keystone masteries now. exhaust still good against burst champs.

patch 7.12 changes to righteous give me mixed feelings, for like going tank jungle its pretty good, gives cdr and armor but the active loss is important for top olaf since you can no longer wait to close the gap you basically blow your load as soon as you're near a champ and olaf doesn't really like that tbh. the stats are good on tank olaf this item is ok for olaf top.

patch 7.16 I missed lethality oh well, lethality overall is a nice luxury item not too crazy good or bad.

Axe Walking And Lane Phase Back to Top

Video Explains when starting q how to punish someone who starts dorans/not a lot of potions.

The whole idea behind this is to burst someone down at level 1 They have 2 choices when this happens
  1. They turn on you instead of walking towards their tower/your axe hoping to kill you in their creeps
  2. They walk towards their tower letting you get closer to your axe for a reset giving you more damage potential. What you don't want to do is throw your axe max range just throw it a tiny bit past them and remember to auto attack and walk towards your axe

Tips and Tricks Back to Top

This section is gonna have both brotips I had in the guide along with some other interesting information.

Tower Pushing Video:

Brotips from earlier:
Hydra and reckless swing are both auto attack resets.

When going for an all in with ult try to use your w when you have caught up to the enemy so that you can auto attack with lifesteal and do more damage with ad steroid from ult.

When going all in if your e is enough to kill them use it, if it kills the target it doesn't cost any health, thats why you use e to last hit when pushing the tower.

If you are all in with someone make sure that you get as many e's in while ulting so that the extra damage you get from ult in e (16 damage added to e when ulting) is put into their health that way you can hopefully execute them with your e.

While you are low if you w and use a potion the potion will heal for more than 150 hp. so while you are low and all in with someone you will get a tad more hp when using a potion.

When you're trying to heal at the base use w and spam corruption potions so you can heal faster than normal.

Team Fighting Back to Top

Things you need to take into consideration before figuring out whether or not you're going to be diving their carries are:

How tanky you are
How much damage you can deal to who you are diving
Summoners of your and enemy
Whether you will live or die
How much damage can you take and how much you will receive when you dive.

If you can dive and your team is near you then whenever you can hit a 2+man undertow, and the one you're diving gets hit by undertow then go ham. Obviously don't go into a turret but if they are out in the open with their only safety is their team you can go in. Simply by getting more than 2 person slow you enable your team to "catch up" to you because the enemy is slowed along with you continuously slowing whoever you are diving, so that means that the enemy team isn't kiting very far since they are slowed.

Your Diving Order Of Priority:

Who does is the most fed?
If the answer to that question is a tank then ignore that question.

Who does more damage enemy mid or enemy adc?
If the answer is enemy mid, then go after the enemy mid. Be sure that your itemization is also on par for this as well, don't be afraid to buy a hexdrinker early on if you are diving the enemy mid.
Same goes for if the enemy adc does the most damage. Make sure you are itemized for this don't just blindly follow the item chart, figure out what your goal is in the fight.

What if the enemy jungler is a rengar or similar damage champion and they are the most fed?
If the enemy jungler is fed and they are a damage type pokemon, simply sit back and kill them when they jump into your team, then turn on the burners and kill those carries. (Priority!!!)

About Me Back to Top

I have been playing for about 7 years now. I started to main olaf when i was in bronze league of season 2. Thank you for reading this guide give me any feedback as i will constantly be trying to update all sections of this guide.

Olaf is my favorite champion because of his true damage. He has taught me basically how to all in and trade when all i gotta do it some very simple math to see if i kill you i enjoy that. After his rework I am glad to say he is in a much better spot, pre-rework i would see myself dying late game a lot because i didn't do enough dps to kill carries, like i would just hit a wall.

I Stream, recently I've been streaming on my smurf, which is only brolaf, check out the stream and watch me only play olaf for a few hours :D

If you want help on an olaf matchup ask in the comments and i will try to go more indepth with it than the matchup section but the matchup section is what the gist of the lane will be.
