Summoner Spells Back to Top

This is a guide for Olaf jungle and not top lane, so take smite 100% for objective control.

Now you have two choices, Ghost and Flash. There are Olaf players that swear that ghost is best and others that claim flash is superior. After playing hundreds of jungle Olaf games, I prefer Ghost, because it complements my play style better than flash does. The choice is completely up to you. If you want a stronger "stick to you and beat your face in" playstyle, Ghost is superior. If you want the ability to jump over walls and have a stronger teamfight presence, Flash is superior.

Ghost
- Pros

- Ghost goes well with Olaf's playstyle
- Short Cooldown (3 mins versus Flash's 5 min cd)
- Stronger offensive usage than flash

-Cons

- You wont have the ability to be able to flash through walls
- Ghost is much weaker than flash at escaping, burning ghost to run away will still likely leave you dead.
- Nerfed a few patches ago

Flash
-Pros

- You can flash over walls
- Having a tool to instantly position yourself makes you stronger in teamfights
- Can make plays easier
- Easier escape than ghost

-Cons

- Long CD
- Can still get kited, even with flash

Masteries Back to Top

So, with Strength of the Ages gone, the next best alternative for Olaf is Fervor. It gives Olaf a lot of free AD, and it is alternatively easy to stack up on him. I like Battle Trance on Olaf versus Double Edged sword, because he stays in the fight longer than most champions, and doesn't take a free 1.5% more damage.

You will be squishier without Strength of the Ages, but you can go full tank and still do a lot more damage then you could of thanks to Fervor.

7.5 UPDATE
The new Bond of Stone is pretty good on Olaf. If you want to play a more "support" style Olaf then Bond would be better than Fervor. Grabbing Bond will hurt your damage a bit overall, however when you get in teamfights the heal is really nice. If you have many melee champs on your team, I recommend going fervor, because it can be hard for your team to hit the enemy and proc it.

Q>E>W is the best for Jungle Olaf. Maxing your axes gives you more damage and stronger CC in your ganks while also giving you faster clear time.

Maxing E second is best. Maxing E first is bad because Undertow max DPS is much higher, and you need the extra points in your Q so you have faster clears and better ganks.

Max W last. It is a very good 1 point wonder, and putting extra points in it does not give you a ton compared to your Q or E.

Grab points in your ult whenever you can.

I like grabbing W level one, because taking Q level one is barely faster than W start, and you don't chew through your entire mana bar clearing your first camp.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

This start has been buffed in the preseason. Since you start blue buff now on most junglers, and there are no longer small minions next to blue buff, you can start this, start your w (Vicious Strikes) and just left click your blue.
After Olaf has become a high pick rate in worlds and solo que, everyone picks up the Talisman start on Olaf. I have been going Talisman more and more lately, and I think it is really good. The extra mana you get after your first clear is really nice, and if you rush Lucidity boots and cant afford Hunters Potion, then it is really strong.
Completely optional purchase. If you like the extra health and mana sustain at a very cheap price, then this item is worth it. I tend not to get it because I'm used to Olaf's mana costs and how he plays in the jungle.

Core Items

After the recent change, its been nerfed for supports, but buffed for Olaf. I get this item 95% after I get my cinderhulk. You can get it after Warrior if you want, too.
Cinderhulk/Warrior depending on your preference. If you are crushing early or just like the early damage, grab warrior. If you got behind early or if your team needs a tank, Cinderhulk is better. Whether you go blue, green or red smite is 100% your choice and all about your personal preference.

Situational Items

CDR boots if going Cinderhulk. Your choice if going Warrior. If you are going Cinderhulk, you can rush Lucidity boots before you get your colored smite. This makes your ghost ganks often and reliable.
    Armor Choices
Need Health? Steraks if you need survivability in a teamfight, Warmogs if you need anti sieging/sieging power or if you like to weave in and out of fights.
    Need Mr?
Only good damage items on Jungle Olaf
Its your choice. Do you want more tenacity or damage?
Amazing item on Olaf. After it got buffed multiple times, I get it 90% of the time. Not only is it cheap, but it allows you to go absolutely crazy in their backline and not worry too much about the consequences. Get GA third item if you're doing well.

Boots-

-CDR boots if you are going Cinderhulk, your choice if you are going warrior. You want to get an early 20% CDR, and I'll explain why later in the guide.

Tank Items-

-You need to figure out what kind of damage the enemy team is doing, and build appropriately.

Damage Items-

-Only go damage on Olaf if you are super far ahead.

-I think the only two damage items that are worth it are Black Cleaver and Maw. I like these items, because not only do they give damage, but they also give you tank stats of some sort. Black cleaver is great on Olaf due to the 20 percent CDR, health,  as well as the armor shredding passive. When you are fighting off divers or initiators in teamfights, shredding their armor for your ADC is one of the best things you can do. Maw is a great item on Olaf, because it has so much synergy with Olaf's passive. They need to have a good amount of AP for this item to be worth buying, however. Lastly, Titanic Hydra is very good if you're buying Cinderhulk, because of the health synergy.

VS

Amumu

Easy

You crush him hard. You can counterjungle him and skirmish against him really easily.

VS

Elise

Medium

You do really well against Elise. You can just fight her and she cant really match your damage unless you mess up or she gets ahead.

VS

Evelynn

Medium

The key to playing against an Eve is asking, "Where would I be if I were an Eve?" Warding the other teams camps are a good idea, because you can see if she is clearing them or not. You can also pink around your jungle to defend against her invades. You beat her 1v1 unless shes really ahead, so if she tries some stupid stuff, make her cry. She might try to kill you level 2 while you do one of your buffs, If you are scared of that, start with your Blue and go directly to Red.

VS

Fiddlesticks

Easy

Even with his buffs, hes still easy. You can duel fiddle really hard once you hit 6. Fiddle is easy unless he gets the jump on you.  Make sure you ward around walls where you think he would ult in.

VS

Gragas

Easy

Its a tank vs tank battle. Usually you wont be fighting him 1v1. He has a much stronger teamfight than you. When he dives into your team, it can be easier for you to counter dive, because their tank is not peeling. Keep that in mind.

VS

Graves

Medium

After his chain of nerfs, I have not had a problem with him in the early game. You can just run at him and kill him in most cases unless he gets fed. Once he gets items, and late game roles around, he can just left click you and kill you.

VS

Hecarim

Medium

You beat him 1v1, but Hecarim can snowball harder than you can. If he picked up a few early kills, you might have to be careful.

VS

Jarvan IV

Easy

If you two are fighting 1v1 and going all out, Olaf should win. The only time Jarvan wins against Olaf is if he at a fairly low health, or their Jarvan got very ahead. The only thing that is tricky with Jarvan is the fact that if you run Ghost and get ulted, you will be stuck in his ult. Flash could be a good idea in this matchup.

VS

Kha'Zix

Medium

This matchup is completely dependent on how well the Kha does. If he gets behind, he will be useless. If he is strong and you are by yourself, you will be in a bit of a pickle. If all else fails, tank up and peel for your carries when he goes on them.

VS

Kindred

Easy

With the nerf to her base armor and with the removal of her heal, I feel Kindred's early game is manageable. Once she gets items she can just kite Olaf around while doing lots of percent Hp damage, so be careful. As of 6.18, shes pretty bad so you'll be fine.

VS

Lee Sin

Hard

Lee can be hard for Olaf. You still beat him 1v1, but the reason Lee can be really hard is that Olaf is usually really low while clearing. If the Lee is smart, he will invade you and kill you with little problem. If he fails, or does not want to counterjungle, the matchup is fairly easy.

VS

Malzahar

Easy

You can just run over him. When he ults you, hit R. Don't underestimate his damage, however, especially if hes made a couple of voidlings.

VS

Master Yi

Hard

You dominate him early game. You need to be careful if the game hits late game, since you have no hard CC to lock him down in a teamfight. Even with his nerfs, he still kills you late game really easily.

VS

Nidalee

Medium

After her nerfs, I feel she isn't as bad as she once was. In my experience, Nidalees forget that Olaf can 1v1 really hard. Many times they have tried invading me to find out that I out duel them really hard. You need to be careful, if you miss your axes, you will probably die. You can also still fall behind if you mess up or she stats snowballing, so be careful.

VS

Pantheon

Medium

1v1, fights are pretty close. If you get behind, just farm up and play for later. Pantheon is notoriously useless late game.

VS

Rammus

Easy

Hit him with e and use ult if he tries to taunt you. EZ

VS

Rek'Sai

Medium

You beat her 1v1, because she doesn't have a combat Ult. She will have stronger ganks than you, so you may have to countergank her. A few early wards in her jungle can work miracles, because you will be able to tell where she ults to, as well as knowing if she is trying to burrow under a wall.

VS

Rengar

Easy

You beat him hard unless he snowballs. Grab some pink wards/sweepers to limit his effectiveness. After the assassin rework, he is stronger, but you still can out dps him if you guys are fighting toe to toe in the jungle really easily.

VS

Sejuani

Medium

She does Percent Hp damage, which you will have a lot of. She also has a better teamfight than you. You will be stronger than her early game, but a smart Sej will just avoid you. Knowing when to peel a Sej or diving the other team will depend on how the teamfight is going.

VS

Shaco

Hard

One of Olaf's weaknesses is being counterjungled due to his low health while clearing. Shaco loves popping into the other team's jungle and killing the other jungler. Wards in your jungle can work miracles if the Shaco is aggressive. If you"re scared of an invade, start your blue buff and take your red right away.

VS

Warwick

CDR Discussion - Getting that early 20% Back to Top

You may have noticed that I have recommended a flat 10% CDR in your runes, and I also recommend getting an early Ionian boots or Warrior enchantment for 20% CDR. This is because you want 20% CDR. With 20% CDR, you can chain axe really well. What I mean by this is Olaf can pick up an axe and almost immediately throw it. If you can consistently pick up your axes and throw them through your enemies while fighting, you will get a considerable DPS boost.

TLDR: Getting an early 20% CDR gives Olaf a huge DPS boost and makes the champion more consistent in general.

Clearing your Jungle Back to Top

PRESEASON UPDATE

Basically this is how your clear is gonna go in season 7. Start blue, run over and kill gromp, then kill wolves. DO NOT USE YOUR SMITE. Run over and kill the raptors, then kill red buff. Lastly kill krugs. You will be about level 4 and about halfway to level 5. Kill crab or gank a lane. If you do the above jungle clear, and then try your hardest to get level 5 as fast as possible, everyone else will be level 3. This gives you a MASSIVE advantage in the game, use this advantage to snowball the game.

And if you were wondering when you smite, just use it when you are getting really low or are finishing clearing up your krugs. (Make sure you smite when your vicious strikes is about to run out for bonus healing)

Who am I? Back to Top

I'm Sully Is Pimp, and I started playing League on the Quinn patch. When I tried Olaf, I loved his play style and how he played in the jungle. I have gotten two accounts to diamond playing mostly jungle Olaf (Sully Is Pimp, 420BasedGodWeed). I think Olaf is really good in this meta. If you are like me and sick of seeing the same junglers every game, (even though I wrote this guide before Olaf got popular xD) I recommend trying him out.
