Summoner Spells Back to Top

Ghost is crazy good on olaf due to innate synergy with q spamming and autoing fleeing enemies. Flash is picked over it against jarvan and if you feel like you need it to survive against heavy early ganks. Ghost is superior as a jungler due to not having to worry about early ganks. TP is the super strong in top and smite is essential in jungle so those get picked.

New Runes Back to Top

Masteries Back to Top

Masteries have some room for change, but fervor and insight are pretty much no brainers on Olaf due to making use of AAs and having more uptime on ghost which allows Olaf to team fight properly. Battle trance gets chosen over double edged and bouynty hunter due to not being a gamble and olafs fights tend to be a bit longer due to his tanky nature.

Q is your bread and butter spell both in top and in jungle. You can sometimes get away with E max especially against armor stackers in top but Q is superior in most cases. As a jungler and as top against ranged bully get w lvl as it is very good in fast and healthy jungle clears and you aint gonna get harass to a ranged opponent this early.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

This is the superior start as a jungler because it allows you to q spam with very little penalty for faster clears.
The standard start in top lane. Allows for great sustain overall. This start is not always optimal but is never bad.
Great start against ranged matchups. Better hp sustain than corrupting but does not give mana sustain.
Full cheese start. If you think FB will happen inside first 3 lvls then this is a good idea. The stats scale better than other first items, but ultimately this start is inferior to others due to having way less sustain unless you AA all the time.

Core Items

Against hard range ad matchups consider going this build. It sets back your build but allows you to not even care about the Quinn who tries so hard to harass you.
This is what you genrally get against ap lane opponents. Allows you to not care about them either.
Your average build usually looks something like this. All around strong build which transfers well into your next items.
This is your finished core top lane build. You deal nice dmg, are tanky against everyone and have capped cdr as long as you run the cdr rune setup. Black cleaver is often but not necessarily build first. Cleaver offers everything you want, dead mans ms passive is huge on olaf and visage has massive healing which synergizes nicely with your kit.
General jungle build. Jungle has very low economy right now, so this kind of a low price for high value build is a lot stronger than more greedy dmg builds. Allows you to be tanky and mobile in team fights. Blue cinderhulk has the least variance of the jungle items allowing for easier ganks with Q chain and more defensive stats. Red smite and ward thingy are good too, so it comes down to preference. Build glory before finishing cinderhulk.
    BEST ITEM IN THE GAME

Situational Items

All these items are strong on Olaf. Frozen heart is great against ad heavy teams and triforce is good when fed but these items require you to substitute items from your core build out. Steraks and randuins are all around nice stuff. Wmog is good if you dont have capped cdr and enemy does not have botrk adc. Titanic is build if you plan to splitpush heavily.
More dmg based builds can run this stuff. Triforce + deaths dance is a cream worthy fantasy.

Flat AD is the best dmg stat for Olaf due to his Q and E having ratios and passive and W giving you huge attack speed combined with E being true dmg instead of physical dmg. The true MVP stats are defensive stats and CDR due to Olaf being a melee in your face champ with potential to infinitely Q chain the enemy team into oblivion. With 40% cdr and picking up the axe you have no downtime on the ability.

VS

Aatrox

Easy
TOP
Avoid Q and its all good. Lvl 6 powerspike is stronger for him so dont just auto to death because he will most likely win. You have way superior burst trade and teamfighting, so just farm and E+Q him if he comes too close.

VS

Akali

Easy
TOP
Can tickle you but that is pretty much it. You are way stronger pre 6 and even though Akali ult is superior in this 1v1 to Olaf ult it is not enough if you have some defensive stats.

VS

Amumu

Easy
JUNGLE
You are stronger 1v1 in all points of the game and he has no way of escaping unless there are units which he can q nearby. Abuse his weak early hard by aggressive routing in the jungle.

VS

Camille

Medium
TOP
You have superior short trades and early all ins. Avoid the camille W and go to town on her. Ult locks her in with you not the other way round. This matchup is not easy though because Camille can avoid Olaf with E and get free trades with w from afar.

VS

Cho'Gath

Medium
TOP
Avoid Q and beware the lvl 6 burst all in and this is pretty free. Usually becomes a farm feast due to neither being able to kill the other.

VS

Darius

Medium

TOP

Avoid outer part of Q and the lvl 1 W all in cheese. You can 1v1 Darius as long as you did the things said before. If you get ahead Darius is done. Watch out if your jungler comes because if Darius gets the ult reset on the jungler he might also kill you due to getting instant 5 stacks.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Easy
TOP
Mundo wont do anything to you. You probably cant kill him either though. Farm fest commences.

VS

Ekko

Medium

TOP

Watch out for stun and his q return. You can sustain his dmg but he can probably escape you so farm fest commences again.

VS

Elise

Easy
JUNGLE
After 6 Elise does nothing to you. Pre 6 just be sure to keep yoursef healthy so you cant be bursted.

VS

Evelynn

Easy

JUNGLE

Cant really do anything to you. Remember control wards.

VS

Fiddlesticks

Easy

JUNGLE

Dont face tank the ulti. Otherwise free af.

VS

Fiora

Medium

TOP

Watch out for Fiora lvl 6 powerspike. Before that, and after that with Q poke, you can just stomp her. Dont 1v1 late game due to ridiculous dmg to tanks. You have better teamfights so just do that instead.

VS

Fizz

Medium

TOP

Beware the lvl 6 all in. Usually becomes a farm lane.

VS

Galio

Medium

TOP

He will push you in, but after lvl 6 this matchup changes heavily into your favor. Get corrupting and a couple dblades early and just laugh at him post 6.

VS

Gangplank

Medium

TOP

GP just stays back and farms and you kinda have to let him. He becomes super strong late, but you free farm the laning phase. Try to get stuff with TP to gain advantage when he is pushed in.

VS

Garen

Medium

TOP

Q+E whenever he comes at you. He has stronger lvl 6 all in. You will outscale pretty hard though. Punish him hard If he uses E into minion wave.

VS

Gnar

Medium

TOP

Early you are stronger than mini gnar but have to respect mega. You have stronger lvl 6 due to his kit being CC based dmg. Later on mini gnar kites you easily and kills you with W dmg. Mega is always weaker than you as long as you have R. Mini can be killed if he messes up juking your Q.

VS

Gragas

Medium

TOP

Pretty much an even farm lane. If he takes unnecessary dmg you can all in him.

VS

Graves

Hard

JUNGLE

Can bully you early. You can only kill him if he gets too cocky.

VS

Hecarim

Medium

JUNGLE

Does not do much against you specifically, but is faster than you which can cause him to outrotate you.

VS

Illaoi

Hard

TOP

Avoid E, dont bonobo engage into R. You might get a pre 6 kill to save the lane though. If Illaoi plays safe pre 6, she pretty much autowins lane. Your teamfight is less situational than hers which is nice.

VS

Irelia

Easy

TOP

You have harass that she cant really respond to. Dont get into a state where you are bot low because she has very good jousting with E.

VS

Jarvan IV

Medium

TOP/JUNGLE

You are all around stronger, especially after 6 due to CC being crucial for jarvan. The nly way for j4 to win a trade is in a short trade where he does AA into Q and backs of after. Mathcup is medium instead of easy because j4 ulti forces you into taking 4.png instead of 6.png which weakens your potential.

VS

Jax

Easy

TOP

You win trades easily as long as you dont facetank him with E. Free trade him with Q+E when he comes to cs. Dont fight him 1v1 lategame head on.

VS

Jayce

Medium

TOP

Start of the lane is pain. After lvl 6 (where he gets absolutely nothing) and some armor you can run him down.

VS

Kayle

Hard

TOP

Laning is pain. Ult stops you from killing. Kayle tends to push though, so you might get this into control with some jungle help.

VS

Kennen

Hard

TOP

Big lanebully. Can also escape you if you get to a point where you are stronger. Gets easier to survive after 6 because he loses a lot of kill potential w/o the stun.

VS

Kha'Zix

Medium

JUNGLE

Beware the isolated Q dmg. His ult is really good against you due to not allowing you to AA sustain. Your ulti does not do anything against him.You are generally stronger in team fight situtations, and can kill him solo too if he does not get rolling.

VS

Kindred

Medium

JUNGLE

Not too much experience on this, but kindred ult allows you to make excellent use of your passive.

VS

Kled

Medium

TOP

Will have to play this matchup a couple more times to learn the ins and outs of it.

VS

Lee Sin

Medium

JUNGLE

Beware his execute dmg. Otherwise you are stronger throughout the game.

VS

Lulu

Hard

TOP

Bullies lane hard. Can just run away from you later on. Pretty broken champ atm. Forces enemy into double support combo, which means they are really ADC dependant.

VS

Malphite

Easy

He runs out of mana before you and has no built in sustain. his ulti is also useless against  you. Let him run out of mana while saving yours to gain free control of the lane.

VS

Master Yi

Medium

JUNGLE

Early game is free for you. Later on he becomes better 1v1, but his teamfight is more situational than yours

VS

Mordekaiser

Medium

Lane generally becomes a farm fest. You dont want to tank his abilities while farming so stay safe. Generally ends up pushing into you.

VS

Nasus

Easy

Does not do anything to you. If he is Q nasus, try to zone him out of cs. If he is E nasus, just force him to E the wave which pushes it into you.

VS

Nautilus

Easy

TOP

Does nice dmg pre 6 so dont tank the E. After 6 only 1 of his abilities does not lose value.

VS

Nidalee

Medium

JUNGLE

Rarely seen anymore. Can avoid your Q chain pretty easily.

VS

Nocturne

Medium

Is weaker than you but can outrotate just like hecarim. Not played atm though.

VS

Nunu

Medium

TOP

Nunu top is pretty unkillable alone. You can sustain his E poke though, so make it a farm fest.
JUNGLE
Neither can kill the other most of the time. Beware his insane stealing potential.

VS

Pantheon

Medium

TOP

He will Q poke you, which gets way easier to deal with after some armor. If you tick lvl 2 first you generally can just cheese him out which he wont expect to happen as an early game champ. Lvl 6 and ninja tabis onwards you are flat out stronger for the rest of the game as long as you dont die early.

VS

Poppy

Easy

Nobody dies... He loses a lot of value on lvl 6.

VS

Quinn

Medium

TOP

Will bully you hard early. Tabis, shield and lvl 6 turn this in your favor.

VS

Rammus

Medium

JUNGLE

Loses value on you lvl 6 but can outrotate you. Out of favor right now though.

VS

Rek'Sai

Medium

JUNGLE

Is weaker than you 1v1, but can outrotate you. One of the least played champs right now.

VS

Renekton

Medium

TOP

Care for his lvl 3 powerspike and his burst. Go for free trades if he wastes abilities. You outscale hard, so if you are not comfortable just wait it out.

VS

Rengar

Medium

JUNGLE

Not a threat to you as long as he is not fed.

VS

Riven

Medium

TOP

Force Riven to walk into your wave if she wants to get a trade. Watch out for the lvl 6 instant all in. Some armor makes this lane easy. A single mistake by the riven will win you this lane if you punish it properly.

VS

Rumble

Medium

TOP

Cant bully you as hard as other melees due to your sustain and later on R. Will push the lane which is good for you.

VS

Sejuani

Easy

Loses all value on you after lvl 6 due to your ult.

VS

Shaco

Easy

TOP

He cant really do much to you. Your sustain allows you to not care about his boxes and Es.
JUNGLE
Same here as long as he wont land an early cheese kill in your side of the jungle.

VS

Shen

Easy

TOP

Does not do anything to you.

VS

Shyvana

Medium

JUNGLE

Killing one another is unlikely. You have better ganks due to actually having a form of CC.

VS

Singed

Medium

TOP

Dont tank the trail. Just farm and sustain.

VS

Sion

Medium

TOP

Do not tank his abilities pre 6. He loses huge amounts of value on lvl 6.

VS

Skarner

Easy

JUNGLE

Pretty much 0 against you. Not played atm though.

VS

Swain

Hard

TOP

Can bully you and generally survive all ins with R. Just survive the early, you become stronger after some items provided you avoid tanking all his abilities.

VS

Tahm Kench

Medium

TOP

Laning against kench is rather hard, but you have more versatile team fighting. Do not get eaten.

VS

Teemo

Medium

TOP

Will poke you early, but gets run down easily later on.

VS

Trundle

Medium

TOP/JUNGLE

Depends hard if he is timmy or daddy Trundle. Dont fight when he uses R, otherwise pretty easy matchups where you win trades.

VS

Tryndamere

Medium

TOP

Easy pre 6, hard post 6. Dont get into an AA war with him later on.

VS

Udyr

Medium
TOP/JUNGLE
Will have to see more of the new Udyr to get a better grasp of this.

VS

Urgot

Medium

TOP

Will poke you early, but loses huge value on 6.

VS

Vayne

Hard

OVERALL

Not a fun champ to play against. Will kite you into Valhalla.

VS

Vi

Easy

JUNGLE

Very weak against you

VS

Vladimir

Medium

TOP

Will poke, but you can exploit any kind of positional errors very hard.

VS

Volibear

Medium

TOP/JUNGLE

Avoid early cheese. You are stronger everywhere otherwise.

VS

Warwick

Easy

TOP/JUNGLE

Has weaker pre 6, and loses value on you after 6.

VS

Wukong

Easy

TOP

All around weaker than you in all stages of the game.

VS

Xin Zhao

Medium

TOP/JUNGLE

Dont AA trade with him. Otherwise you are stronger.

VS

Yasuo

Easy

TOP

You can run him down. Late game he can kill you, but he has a more situational team fighting.

VS

Yorick

Medium

Will poke you early. Just sustain and outscale.

VS

Zac

Easy

Loses insane amounts of value against you

Pros and cons Back to Top

PROS:
- Heavy snowball
- Beast built in synergy
- Fast af boiiiiii
- CC is irrelevant
- Q chain galore
- Very hard to kill as long as in range to AA
- Better scaling than most bruisers
- Strong throughout the game
- Can kill everything with cdr tank items instead of dmg items
- Can survive hard matchups with his built in sustain

CONS:
- Melee
- Can be kited
- Mana hungry when forced to Q during laning face, in jungle w/o blue
- struggles vs ranged matchups
- Pushes lane easily early
- Has to engage by running, so can be bursted/avoided (basically reduced to secondary engage in most games)

Info about myself Back to Top

Hi! My ign is erbalerba. I just hit Diamond 5 in EUNE playing mainly Olaf in top and jungle.I am currently  ranked the 223rd best Olaf in the world by Lolskill. I started playing in season 2 and Olaf has kinda been my main almost since the start. I have always been a fan of bruisers and Olaf is in my opinion the manliest champ in the game. I think that this guide can offer information about this wonderful champ that rarely sees play anywhere, and most of it is jungle in competetive play. If you have any questions or opinions, feel free to leave a comment and/or add me in game and chat me up there. Thank you so much for reading this guide. More guides and youtube vids surely coming in the future!
