Summoner Spells Back to Top

6.png12.png

TP offers map control and helps a lot before 6. Hitting 6 is quite important in a lot of matchups. I just prefer ghost over flash, lets you stick easier.

3.png--------14.png

If you wanna go ham.

4.png

I mean, its flash, so you can, but I don't.

New Runes Back to Top

Masteries Back to Top

I really like grasp undying, good sustain, good damage, really good in a 1v1, good for team fights as well, saved my life more then once.

Fervor of battle/warlords bloodlust are fun, but not as strong, fervor does some serious damage though. If you wanna take 12 in ferocity, go for oppressor, your constantly slowing anyway.

Undertow  olafaxethrowcast.png is best against ranged champions and champions not building tanky first (8.png50.png39.png157.png24.png). It gives good poke, but drains your mana if you spam it. Against Yasuo, there's merit to maxing Reckless swing  olafrecklessstrike.png if hes good with his wind wall, but for lower elo, max Undertow. Against tanks, E is there all Armor/Mr, Q if there heath tank (Armor/Mr = 78.png etc, health = 36.png etc).

Don't be afraid to deviate from the 4'st four levels, sometimes you need to take w olaffrenziedstrikes.png at 3rd or even 2nd level when the situation calls for it, you will regen more then you think with it, but it will push the wave hard.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

I don't like corrupting potion, these two give much more aggressive starts, but the mana regeneration on corrupting does help.

Core Items

Your gonna build all these ideally at some point, all are really good.
Usually go for Tabi, Merc treads help when there is loads of CC, swiftness against Lucian, Ezreal, and Kalista and theres little CC.
2 of these will probably round off your build, if you have a second tank, stereks+ titanic is good dmg, other wise probably stereks + what ever else is most useful.

Situational Items

These are good vs double/triple ap, and you still want damage, but not usually.
Ah the good old days, Warlords+spirit visage+these 2, go ham.

i still really like sunfire cape 3068.png, its good stats, good aoe damage and helps wave clear, I just like it.

Black cleaver 3071.png is just good all round, 20% cdr, armor shred (really good against the back line), movement speed when you through an axe, good build path and health + ad, you can't ask for more more.

Only don't build spirit visage if they no Magic damage, that's about the only excuse really3065.png.

Choosing between Dead man's 3742.png, Randuin's 3143.png and frozen heart 3110.png might not be the easiest choice. Dead mans if the fed champion is a ad caster (81.png236.png e.g) as attack speed isn't as important for them. Randuins is good if the fed enemy is a crit reliant (429.png,222.png e.g), helps sort out the attack speed as well, and slows to help catch up, (and slow down for peel, but you have your axes) probably the best in most situations. Frozen heart is best if there is two attack speed (or more) champions in the game. Its the best for peeling against Irelia 39.png/Jax 24.png and caps you off for cdr (you go over with spirit visage+ black cleaver, but what you gonna do).

Steraks 3053.png is pretty much an auto buy, but not as much as the other 3. The damage is really nice and its good if you're diving the back line, people don't expect the shield nor the damage. Love it.

VS

Aatrox

Easy

Haven't seen him much and you probably never will, all him in early when you get a level advantage, dodge his q and e. Max Q and build a cleaver.

VS

Akali

Medium

Buy a pink, your gonna need one. You can put one in the middle bush when in doubt, try and fight around it. Might last a little longer. She can kill you later into the game if you don't have any MR. She'll probably build tank, so max Q and get a cleaver and poke her.

VS

Cassiopeia

Hard

Very rare match up, try to avoid her poison, you can probably kill her early, most like level 1, which can snowball you, but shes gonna scale and shes gonna poke, luckily its not too common to see her top (or even in the game). Max Q to slow her and farm and rush a hex drinker.

VS

Cho'Gath

Easy

Not popular and not a threat. His E makes it hard to all in level 1, but it can be done, if he takes Q second, then you can all in him, else wait for him to use his E and then trade. His ult does true damage so there's no point in building a hex drinker, you can either just simply dodge his Q or run through it, its not bad either way. Max Q and build a cleaver.

VS

Darius

Medium

Keep close to him and his Q isn't nearly as good, try and trade level 1 as soon as he misses Q, your Q is on a much lower cool down due to picking it up. His Q has 9 second CD, that's a huge time to kill. Watch out for level 6, his ult does a lot of damage with 5 stacks. If he backs and gets armor (because you all inned him level 1 by trading properly) then max E, otherwise, max Q and build a sunfire.

VS

Diana

Easy

She is melee. She is Squishy. She can't duel early. Just kill her, she will come up to cs at level 1, put the pressure on, and trade hard. You can probably force a flash or cheese a kill. She will kill your AD late if you don't help. Max q and build a hex drinker.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Medium

Hes not gonna do anything once he realises how much damage you do. Hes gonna sit under tower and farm. Try and keep the pressure on, trade where ever possible, and find either an opportunity to dive (unlikely unless you have flash) or wait for him to be ganked for and either run away, or try and turn it. Max Q for poke, E's kinda pointless when he stacks health. Build cleaver, into spirit visage (unless both jungle and mid are AD).

VS

Ekko

Medium

Hes fallen out the meta as a tank top, and is only really played mid/jungle. But he does make appearance's up top. If hes tank, its easier, but he can deal surprising amount damage either way.Ult his W when he engages on you, and you can bait him in and make it useless. If hes tank, build a spirit visage and max E, if hes AP build a hexdrinker and max Q.

VS

Fiora

Hard

Shes a better duelist then you, does more damage then you and is a bigger threat. However, she has no CC (apart form W, but that does matter to you) so your ult is not nearly as good and her heal from her ult destroys you. You will probably have to peel her off your ADC. Max Q and build a sunfire.

VS

Fizz

Medium

Slippery fish, thankfully fell out of meta. Good news for top laners, bad news for everyone else who's gonna have an AP fizz one shotting them if their squishy. If he is top, not much you can do to kill him, just try and deny him, he q's. Max Q (if you can't him them max E) and build a hexdrinker, spirit visage if hes tank.

VS

Gangplank

Easy

Hes weak early, and hes melee, punish him when ever he cs', kill his barrels if you can, requires good timing though and can be risky, just try and kill him early when he does not expect it. Max Q and build a cleaver.

VS

Garen

Medium

Same as a few of the tank match ups, you can't kill him unless he fucks up, and he can't kill you unless you do the same. Careful when he targets you for the true damage ult. Try and keep his passive from regening him too much. Max E and build a cleaver.

VS

Gnar

Easy

CC? what CC?, You crush this match up, his greatest tool is useless. Your Q makes it easy for you to keep up, especially with cleaver. Max Q, rush cleaver, you can fight him in big or small, but its easier in small cause hes really squishy.

VS

Graves

Hard

God I hate this champion. Hes tanky, hes mobile and he has damage, from a range and a lot of it. Be on the move to dodge his abilities and get ganks. Max Q and if you get ganks, build a cleaver, otherwise build a sunfire.

VS

Hecarim

Medium

Not seen much top, but have a feeling his gonna come back soon in a blaze of glory. Tri force is good on him, and does a lot of damage because of it. Punish him early, Keep the pressure up and try to get level 2 first and all in him, you'll either burn summoners or kill him (or both). Max Q if he builds tri force early, E if he builds tanky. Get a black cleaver.

VS

Heimerdinger

Medium

Popular a few seasons back and you never know. Build MR, avoid poke early and Max that Q, you can kill him then.

VS

Illaoi

Hard

DODGE! keep moving, it is possible to duel her, especially before 6, but you have to keep moving, dodge all of her abilities and when 6 comes around, run out of that ult instantly, exhaust might be useful here. Max Q. Build a sunfire if it gets bad, full tank if it gets really bad.

VS

Irelia

Medium

God I hate this champion. I've hated her since I started maining top lane, and it hasn't changed since. You can kill her easily, but shes gonna get a tri force eventually, and then shes gonna get tank, and shes gonna kill everyone, honestly, even if you get fed, its hard to carry against the inevitability, I just ban her. Max Q and get a cleaver.

VS

Jax

Easy

Very weak early, all in him level 1, try and avoid the stun. Never take the pressure off, deny him as long you can, its much easier to stop him then Irelia. Max Q and get a cleaver.

VS

Jayce

Easy

He pokes, then he pokes, then he comes in, and you kill him, just like Nidalee. Get yourself a cleaver and try to all him early, he won't expect the pressure. Max Q.

VS

Kayle

Easy

She needs a lot of farm to be useful, and its hard to get back in after you inevitability crush her. A dirty trick is to let her naturally push her E, then all in her and kill her before she can get back too her tower. Max Q and buy a black cleaver.

VS

Kennen

Hard

I hate Kennen, hes annoying and useful no matter what. I don't seem to beat him in lane, But more then anything, i think this is just a personal match up, Olaf should be really good vs him. His E just makes it hard to capitalize. Max Q, and build a hex drinker and cleaver.

VS

Lissandra

Easy

She has lot of CC and a lot of poke. Shes honestly dead on the border between medium and easy. When you get 6, you can probably kill her. Max Q and get a hex drinker. If there's a bit of magic damage ( E.g mid is AP) get a spirit visage.

VS

Malphite

Medium

Another tank, another stalemate, you can maybe kill him early. All him in the early game, try and avoid the wave pushing towards his tower and get a gank when he has no flash. Max E and build a cleaver if you want the pressure, otherwise, just build tank. (spirit visage if he has a bit of ap).

VS

Malzahar

Medium

Banned usually, So I never see him, but if hes top, his passive isn't that bad to deal with, a single Q and your good. His ult isn't a big problem, because of you ult. He just does a lot of damage, build a spirit visage and max that Q ( this could change to E, when I test it out more, I don't know yet).

VS

Nasus

Easy

keep the pressure on him. Dont let him farm, trade every time he cs's. You want to go fairly damage heavy, but still need a sunfire. You can crush him early, but remember he will scale, keep the pressure on, don't be afraid to stand on your own minions and take the Q's. You might want to build a Blade of the ruined king, to help shred him. Max Q and keep the poke up, build either cleaver or BotRK.

VS

Nidalee

Easy

Not seen much top anymore (pretty sure i'm the only who plays it still) but you never know. You shit on her. You out damage, out tank and out cc, scale better and destroy her with your ult. Max Q and build a hex drinker into black cleaver.

VS

Pantheon

Hard

Ugh, ignite Pantheon. Very deadly, best to probably play safe, if hes TP, then try putting pressure on. Its still a hard matchup though, because he's just gonna roam, and you cant do much about it, your mid has to be wary. Remember he crits when your low. Max q and build a sunfire.

VS

Poppy

Easy

I actually like this matchup, her stuns are pointless when your 6, and her dashing to you just gives more chance for you to kill her, you can shred her armor and health with cleaver stacks and your E true damage. Dodge her Q (normally the second part as if shes any good she'll hit the first half). Max E, to avoid her passive, especially if shes playing defensive with armor. Build Cleaver first.

VS

Quinn

Medium

Shes an ADC with a blind, she builds a little tanky and shes annoying. Build a cleaver and try and push her were possible. Max Q.

VS

Renekton

Medium

Damage is high early, watch out for that rage bar. His W stuns for 1.5 seconds when raged out, play around it where possible. Dodge his q and trade while its on CD, much like Darius. You'll out scale late. Max E and get a sunfire into a cleaver, unless their AP is fed beyond belief, in which case get a spirit visage.

VS

Riven

Easy

Ooohhhhhhh Riven. So easy, so fun. Don't duel her 1-3, just poke, if you get her low enough, go in. Get 6, get cleaver if ahead, sunfire otherwise, then just destroy her. Max that Q bois.

VS

Rumble

Easy

Easy match up. Big counter. He'll annoy you for the first couple of levels with his q, but when you get a hex drinker and 6, you'll destroy him in any fight. Take ghost and run out of his ult, keep on him and keep throwing Q's. Max Q and build a hex drinker.

VS

Ryze

Medium

Comes in out of meta all the time, and he can be bad if you can't kill him early. Good news is its quite possible if they are not careful. Build a hex drinker and max Q to stick on him.

VS

Shen

Easy

His W block your auto's, stop trading while its up, then go back in, keep moving around his Q remember his E taunts, he'll probably use it defensively anyway. Autoing with his q up gives him more energy, so be careful for that. When he's 6, don't TP to lane, save it to roam, you should be stronger, so you will skirmish better. Build a cleaver and max Q for the roam and the poke. This one requires team communication, but you can crush him easily.

VS

Shyvana

Easy

Shes got no regen in terms of health, her damage is nothing in comparism to your's early and build a cleaver is enough to warrant maxing Q. Poke her, don't let her scale, force her back, and tower dive wherever possible. Max Q and build cleaver.

VS

Singed

Medium

He's a pain in the arse, you probably aren't gonna kill him, but you're also not gonna die to him, unless you screw up and die to a gank, but cmon, just watch the flip. Even if he gets ahead, theres worse champs. Max E and get a spirit visage into cleaver.

VS

Sion

Medium

Your not gonna kill him, hes not gonna kill you, he'll probably roam at 6, make sure your other lanes are responsive, push in the mean time. Farm up and become a monster. You can apply pressure early but evenetually he wont care. Max E if your trading a lot, Max Q if you end up zoning (usually if you kill him). Build a cleaver.

VS

Swain

Medium

He can be annoying and is probably going to outscale you, but you can pressure early and if hes play too agressive, you can probably punish that. Take ignite if you wanna try and duel him. Max Q and build cleaver into spirit visage.

VS

Taliyah

Easy

Shes bad top, she wont do anything to you and you can kill her easy early if she gets too close, you ult through the CC, just don't let her roam, simple as. Max Q and build hexdrinker/cleaver.

VS

Trundle

Hard

Trundle and Volibear are much the same. Their tanky, their damaging and they out duel in the early game Makes you wonder why you picked Olaf over them, but you know, CC immunity is pretty good. Max Q, stay safe, avoid ganks and farm till late where you can be useful. Honestly, it doesn't matter what you rush, hes gonna sap it, but you probably just want a sunfire, because he will rush armor over MR every time.

VS

Vladimir

Medium

Another annoying ranged champion, but much like swain( cause there pretty much identical champs) hes bad early and keeps getting better. Kill him early if possible, else build hexdrinker and cleaver and keep the pressure up, but he'll get there eventually. Max Q.

VS

Volibear

Hard

As said before with Trundle, this one is very difficult, you cant out damage him early becuase of his W, and you cant out tank because of his passive and he sets up pretty good ganks with his q. Max Q, avoid fighting, farm up till late.

VS

Wukong

Easy

Surprisingly like Jax, item dependent and bad early. All him in level 1/2, he won't expect it and you can cheese a flash or a kill easy. You will deal more damage for quite some time, and it he'll only be useful late. Max Q for poke and build a black cleaver.

VS

Yasuo

Easy

Yasuo can be easy. Usually is majority the time. Occasionally you come across a good one, but not usually. Avoid his q, not hard early, especially the whirlwind. Hitting your Q is not that easy, so you probably wanna max E. Remember his shield can come up during combat, get rid of it before you trade. A single auto or Q will do. If you get ahead rush a cleaver. You can build one anyway or a sunfire, it's personal preference really and how good you are at dodging.

VS

Zed

Medium

Not seen top, quite often banned still, in lower elo's at least, he's hard to kill but if you build armor, he'll have a hard time killing you. Max E (because you wont hit that many Q's) and get a sunfire.

Laning phase Back to Top

Laning phase for Olaf changes on the match up.

In most, your going to be fairly aggressive, Olaf is fairly decent at poking with his Q, and his E makes for quick trades without attracting minion aggro. When your opponent goes for a cs, E them, they can't trad back, and you take no minion aggro. Try and reach level 2 earlier then your opponent, your level 2 is very strong with Q and E. You can usually blow a summoner or two, or even get a kill. When building items, thinking about what you need more. If you are in match up against a ranged champ, phage3044.png will be more useful then the warhammer3133.png. Against an AP lane and jungle, finishing maw of malmortius maybe better then going onto armor or a cleaver. Against champs that deal true damage, health is obviously better then armor.

In a bad match up, you have to a lot more passive, and try and sneak in kills through ganks. Even with you spikes of power, your not going to be in as good position, farming becomes the name of the game. Throw Q's out and get all the cannons. Like for TP roams when your opponents is down.

if you get ganked, there is the chance you can outplay it. Olaf has great 2v1 potential and can often turn a gank around for a double, i've done it many times. If you're keep the pressure on your lane opponent (something like a Jax) and their jungler is squishy (like an elise or nidalee), dodge the important abilities such as the cocoon or spear respectively and turn the fight.

Mid game Back to Top

Mid game is usually fairly standard (usually).

You need to keep farming. Olaf needs tank item as much as your next bruiser, and before late game comes around you want you 3 core items. Try and fight in skirmishes with your jungle and mid, but don't be completely afraid of team fighting. With some clever positioning (flanking or being fairly need the back to peel) you can make it work. Team fighting is much more of an option if you built tank. Try and help secure dragons and the rift herald (you probably want to take the buff). Push your tower and take it, then try and get mid's. Olaf is not the strongest pusher, but he can make it work with the right item optimization. His W helps here.

Late game Back to Top

Your tanky, you can 1v1 most ADC's and APC's and you wanna fight. Positioning is still key here, flanking is excellent, but if you have an assassin on the team, leave it to him. Sometimes running head on is the best idea. Tagging someone with your q might be enough to start a fight. You also may need to peel, and your build should reflect this. Sometimes you may omit the sunfire for may appropriate armor items, your build will hardly ever be the same. Remember to throw your axes to a position where you can realistically pick them up, and remember, your ult gives you armor and MR passively, which goes away when you ult, so some times, its best to avoid ulting, and only ult when your about to be hit with cc, or you really need the AD/movement speed. Just remember, there is more then one bacl line, you have your own to think about.

Tips and tricks. Back to Top

A few tricks to keep in mind:

The lower health you get, the more potent you are, you heal more, you deal more damage. Keep fighting till the end.

At 36% CDR, when you pick up an axe, there is no Cool down.

Your ult gives you tank stats, which could well save your life, ulting isn't always the best idea.

Your E's CD is reduced by a second every time you auto, including minions, this helps you keep the pressure up by pressing E, autoing a few times, and pressing E again.

Your E deals true damage, but will also deal damage to you equal to 30% of the damage dealt. You also heal this damage if you kill the target. With your W passive and spirit visage, E'ing a minion or character to kill it may save your life.

With 40% CDR, you E is on a 4.8 second cooldown. With 3 auto's this is essentially a 2 second CD, remember to keep attacking where possible for maximum damage.

Playing aggressive will get you ganked, so keep one eye on the lane, the other on the map. Buy pink wards, get either you or your jungle to get rift scuttler and keep the area warded.

Freezing and minion control is very important top lane. Having more minion can win you fights, casters deal more damage then melee, so try and kill them off before all ininng.

About me Back to Top

I've been playing league since season 3, about the release of the ultimate Udyr skin, bit before hand. I mained jungle initially, but moved to top lane out of fun and playing with a team. I started playing a lot of Olaf in early season 4, and played him ever since. I dont know how many games I have in Normal games+ ranked, but I assume its about 300 on Olaf. I currently have lv 7 mastery on Olaf, which i obtained a few days after it was released. I'm currently high silver as i haven't ranked this season due to my A level, but aim to get to platinum by the end of the season, as I have only ended up in gold with about 60-120 games played. Olaf is what of one my favorite champions in terms of lore, game play and art. I have over 1400 normal games won so far and have played about 2500. I hope you enjoy this guide and i appreciate any feedback.
