Summoner Spells Back to Top

Your basic summoner spell will almost always be 21.png, as it provides extra survivability in sticky situations. Use it to survive when the enemy team focuses you.
In most match-ups 7.png will be advised, and it's purpose is to keep your teammates alive more than to save yourself. Sometimes a good idea for your ADC to take 14.png instead of a second heal so they can secure more kills.
Take 3.png if your ADC is strong early game or their damage depends on skillshots/proximity to target (e.g. 42.png or 81.png).
Take 1.png against teams packed full with hard CC.
4.png is not necessary as you will stay in the back line most of the time, and you will already have plenty of mobility. Same goes for 6.png. Only take 4.png if you intend to build more AP and play more aggressively.
14.png can sometimes be useful against healers like 16.png, but usually it's better for your ADC to take it instead.

The basic defensive setup is 0-18-12 with windspeaker's blessing keystone. Wanderer and explorer allow you to roam more easily, so you can run mid for a quick assist. They will also let you get away from danger more easily. Recovery is better for early game if you have a hard match-up with reliable poke, otherwise take unyielding for improved late game. Runic armor increases your health regen even further especially late game, but veteran's scars can sometimes be better early against match-ups with high burst and/or cc (e.g. 25.png + 119.png143.png or 51.png). Insight lets you go for risky dives more often. Pick assassin over secret stash and runic affinity because you don't really use potions much and you don't really need the buffs either. The 2% bonus damage doesn't really mean anything since you don't usually do much damage but it's usually more useful than the other two. Meditation is better than merciless since, again, you don't usually deal much damage. Take bandit in most games for extra gold, only take dangerous game if their team is filled with high-damage, high-burst champions. Intelligence is a must-have since you want to reach 45% CDR as soon as you can.


If you wan to play more aggressively, 12-18-0 will be more appropriate. Here cunning tree remains unchanged, in ferocity you want to pick sorcery, expose weakness, natural talent and battle trance. You can take double edged sword for stronger poke if you're confident in your ability to avoid damage.

The most difficult part about playing Orianna support is to keep track of where the ball is in teamfights. This is because you'll be moving the ball from ally to ally, while constantly moving around yourself and dodging damage. Sometimes you might accidentally move out of range, or your ally might suddenly jump out of range, causing the ball to return to you, which may be easily overlooked in the heat of battle if you're not careful.
The extra magic damage on AA allows for easy farming in spare time, and combined with orianaizunacommand.png and orianadissonancecommand.png gives you some nice waveclear when needed. It also makes for some good poke, but remember that you're squishy, so if you get caught with hard CC you are likely to die.

Always max this first, it will keep your team alive. This ability is your most important tool as a support, allowing you to shield your allies from a long range. Use your shield to deny poke and save your allies over and over again. They'll never thank you. Early game try to keep the ball attached to your ADC to give them the extra armor and MR. Use orianaredactcommand.png to attach your ball to allies if you want to cast orianadissonancecommand.png or orianadetonatecommand.png in an area around them. Even if no shielding is needed during team trade, use orianaredactcommand.png to keep your ball in the front line, so that you can react more quickly, does the need arise.
When you're being chased you can cast orianaizunacommand.png onto the enemy to deal some damage and then quickly cast orianaredactcommand.png on yourself to deal damage to enemies as the ball returns to you. You can cast orianadissonancecommand.png between if you want to poke them a bit more, or you can cast it after the combo if you just want to escape.

Your second most important tool when playing as Orianna support. On level 2 pick orianadissonancecommand.png if your ADC is strong early to help them secure kills more easily, otherwise pick orianaizunacommand.png.
When chasing enemies, use orianaizunacommand.png to move your ball between enemies and then cast orianadissonancecommand.png. This way you'll both slow the enemy and give your allies a speed boost. If you can't get in range, cast orianaredactcommand.png on the ally with highest damage/nearest to the target and then cast orianadissonancecommand.png. When 'tactically retreating' use orianaizunacommand.png or orianaredactcommand.png to get the ball to your team and then cast orianadissonancecommand.png to speed up your team and slow down the chasing enemies. Also use orianadissonancecommand.png when roaming or returning from base to spend less time out of lane, but be careful not to use too much mana, especially early game.

This ability might seem useless when not building AP, since it's main purpose when playing Orianna is to deal damage, and without AP you don't have damage. It is, however, just as useful as your other two abilities. You can use your Q to poke enemies a bit if they're squishy, but it won't do much.
There are two main applications of this ability. First, you can use it to grant vision of bushes or behind walls. Instead of warding the lane bushes, just send your ball into the bush if you think the enemy might be there. Secondly, you can psychologically pressure and zone the enemy. If you cast orianaizunacommand.png onto enemy ADC they will have to move to avoid damage, possibly missing farm. Additionally enemy will be hesitant to approach the ball and less likely to poke/engage if the ball is between you and them. It will cause most players to play a bit safer giving you more control over the lane. You will also use orianaizunacommand.png to position your ball for other ability casts.
If you're going for a more poke and damage focused playstyle, put and extra point here at level 7 or 8.

Your ulti can be quite a game changer if used correctly. Early game you will use it mostly to get enemy champions away from their tower and into your ADC's range so they can get the kill. It can also turn tower dives around, by moving enemy champions closer to your tower and away from you/your ADC. Later in the game it can turn a teamfight in your favor. You can use it to pull back escaping enemies or buy your team a few more seconds to escape. It can also disorient the enemy for a while, giving your team the edge in a teamfight.
You can use orianadetonatecommand.png to disrupt some ultimate abilities like katarinar.pngjhinr.png or warwickr.png, but it also has strong synergy with many ultimate abilities, e.g. yasuorknockupcombow.png (knocks enemies airborne), katarinar.png (forces enemies to stay within range longer, also allows katarinapassive.png to deal damage to more enemies, as they'll be grouped together) or viktorchaosstorm.png (again, groups enemies together and prevents them from escaping the active radius). However, it can also move enemies out of range if used incorrectly, especially with abilities such as luxmalicecannon.png or jhinr.png.
This ability needs to be used strategically and it can sometimes be hard to pick the right moment, but it is easier to use early game, and missing an ulti late game is a bit less punishing because of the fairly short cooldown. If you have 4.png, you can cast orianadetonatecommand.png with the ball attached to you and then 4.png at the last moment into the enemy team, leaving them no time to react and escape.
Often the best strategy is to stick your ball to the your diver with orianaredactcommand.png and wait for them to position within the enemy team.

Starting Items

    Always start with these items.
    First back.

Core Items

    Build first against supports with hard CC, like Morgana.
    Build first if your ADC is strong early/attack speed oriented, such as Ashe.
    Build first if your ADC struggles early in this match-up or doesn't have that much attack speed, like Jhin.
    In most cases upgrade to boots of swiftness after building your first item. Only build boots of lucidity if you need quick, cheap CDR, replace with boots of swiftness later.

Situational Items

    Build if teamfights usually last at least 6 seconds and generally tend to occur in one place, rather than on-the-move.
    Build if enemy team has reliable hard CC and you haven't built it yet.
    Build locket against burst teams, unless you already have 3 or more items with actives.
    For a more aggressive playstyle, build morellonomicon second. Follow up with zhonya's against AD or abyssal when your team is more AP focused. Recommended when your team needs more damage/your ADC or mid is struggling.
    In most games upgrade this at the very end, unless enemy team escapes teamfights often and you need some extra armor.
    Build for extra tankiness and surprise tower dives. Most useful early to mid-game.
    Good choice against full AD team.

    Typical example build with some poke and lots of utility.
    Buy against strong initiators like Ahri or Malphite if they dive often and effectively.
    Example aggressive build. Here zhonya can be replaced with abyssal scepter if your team has more magic damage or when zhonya's active is not of much use. Locket can be replaced with guardian angel.
    Choice of tank items for different situations. Usually build 1, sometimes 2 of them.
    Buy Elixir of Iron if you need tenacity or extra tankiness. Buy Elixir of Sorcery for extra damage.

The build is strongly based on both ally and enemy team composition, you build to counter the enemy team and amplify the strengths of your team. The only thing that remains unchanged is your gold income item.

Buy 3065.png if they have true damage and you need MR. It is especially strong when combined with 3174.png and/or 3222.png, giving you a lot of health regen.
Buy 3143.png against a crit-oriented team.
Buy 3083.png only if it will take you above 2750 HP.
3193.png is a good tank item against teams with mixed damage, and the active can help you survive bursts more easily.
Build 3512.png if your team struggles to push lanes and you need the resistances.
3060.png can be good to push lanes more easily, but only buy it if you don't have 45% CDR yet. Extra mana is of limited value since you regen mana extremely quicly, however it is still helpful.

In lane you can mostly just ignore him and focus on enemy ADC. Keep out of his range when possible and don't get between him and enemy tower. Pressure him when he's trying to get behind you.

Easy to poke and pressure, you can avoid her enchantedcrystalarrow.png quite easily because of your movement speed and you can counteract her slows with orianadissonancecommand.png.

As long as you avoid his  bardq.png you should have no trouble against him in lane. Later into the game bardr.png can be game-changing and there isn't much you can do about that.

Laning phase against Blitzcrank can be either easy or hard, depending on how well your ADC avoids his rocketgrab.png. But even if they get caught you can cast orianaredactcommand.png on them to absorb some of the damage and follow up with orianadissonancecommand.png to let them escape faster.

Mildly annoying if anything. Bare in mind that his braume.png can stop orianaizunacommand.png. Dodge his braumq.png and stay out of melee range to avoid stuns.

She can poke with caitlynpiltoverpeacemaker.png quite frequently and her caitlynyordletrap.png can be an issue for you since you tend to move around a lot and you're squishy early game. If your ADC is not careful enough you will not be able to deny poke effectively, forcing you to play safe.

Hard match-up because of his high sustain damage, especially dangerous when combined with hard CC support like 25.png. Use orianaizunacommand.png and orianadissonancecommand.png when he's trying to catch his axes to punish him a bit and possibly cause him to miss an axe.

orianadetonatecommand.png can interrupt her katarinar.png and turn around the teamfight. If it's not available you can use orianaredactcommand.png and orianadissonancecommand.png to let your teammates escape more easily. She can easily chase you down and finish you off if you're caught off guard.

As soon as blindmonkqone.png hits you or your ally use orianaredactcommand.png on the target and cast orianadetonatecommand.png when you see Lee coming. This will most likely take them by surprise and often result in a kill.

As long as you build 3222.png you shouldn't struggle in lane against her. Stay out of her leonasolarbarrier.png range and focus the ADC. If her leonazenithblade.png hits your ally, cast orianaredactcommand.png immediately.

He can quickly chase you down using luciane.png, even if you use orianadissonancecommand.png. In lane he can poke you very hard, forcing you to play more careful. If enemy pick Lucian, it's usually better to pick a different support.

You will often have just enough time to cast orianaredactcommand.png when she uses missfortunericochetshot.png to stop the damage. Always build 3222.png against Morgana, her darkbindingmissile.png lasts quite long. Use orianadissonancecommand.png to get out of soulshackles.png range. You can avoid darkbindingmissile.png relatively easily, and if your ADC gets caught use 3222.png active on them. Morgana can be quite dangerous when paired up with certain ADCs like 119.png or 67.png, or when your ADC is consistently caught by darkbindingmissile.png.

Not much of a threat as long as you avoid namiq.png. Keep distance from your ADC to stop namiw.png from bouncing and use orianadissonancecommand.png to counter her passive.

If an ally is caught by nautilusanchordrag.png, shield them with orianaredactcommand.png and cast orianadissonancecommand.png afterwards to help them escape.

Slow him down with orianadissonancecommand.png, don't chase him.

Her sonaq.png is too quick for you to have time to react and cast orianaredactcommand.png, therefore you cannot deny her poke. Additionally she can deny your poke with sonaw.png and counter your orianadissonancecommand.png with sonae.png. I recommend building 3174.png and 3026.png in this match-up, and play a bit safer.

Shield if someone steps into teemorcast.png, use orianadissonancecommand.png to counter movequick.png. Use orianaizunacommand.png and orianadissonancecommand.png to check if he's hiding in bushes, use orianadetonatecommand.png to get him out of invisibility if you're certain where he is.

Thresh

Easy

Use orianaredactcommand.png If an ally is hit by threshq.png. The difficulty of this matchup, similarly to Blitzcrank or Morgana, depends strongly on your ADC's ability to dodge his threshq.png. However it is probably one of the easiest skillshots to dodge. If you expect a hook, give your ADC a speed boost with orianadissonancecommand.png to help then dodge it more easily.

Strong burst, your orianaredactcommand.png often won't be enough. They tend to play quite aggressively, so you can use orianadetonatecommand.png to catch them out under your tower.

His yasuowmovingwall.png can block orianaizunacommand.png and orianaredactcommand.png, which can completely disrupt you. Use your orianaizunacommand.png and then orianaredactcommand.png to shield someone behind yasuowmovingwall.png.

Stay away from him and don't get caught by yorickw.png because it can be quite punishing since you don't have 4.png most of the time.

Her poke is strong and frequent, you can't shield your ADC and yourself effectively. Destroy her seeds and use orianadissonancecommand.png to dodge her zyrae.png3174.png and 3190.png are highly recommended in this match-up.

General

You will stay behind your team most of the time, casting orianaredactcommand.png and orianadissonancecommand.png from range.
Use orianaizunacommand.png to grant vision over walls or to check nearby bushes. Always stay mobile and avoid damage and CC.
Take extra care when navigating jungle in a teamfight since you don't have flash; you don't want to split away from your team in a crucial moment or be cornered by enemies.
You don't need to go back to base as often as your team because of your high mana and health regen. Use this time to farm minions.

Early Game

Focus on shielding your ADC. Use your orianadissonancecommand.png wisely as it costs a lot of mana.
If your ADC returns to base and you don't need to, you can help your jungler invade enemy jungle, you can roam to mid lane and help them get a kill, or you can farm minions under your tower if nothing interesting is going on.
It is advised to roam in early game, especially in an easy match-up. If your ADC can handle themselves alone for a while, run mid and help them get a kill. Use orianadissonancecommand.png to get there faster. Don't roam if you don't expect to get an assist out of it, because you'll lose experience.
Since you can check lane bushes with orianaizunacommand.png, save wards for jungle bushes and ward dragon. Buy CR whenever you can.
Cast orianaizunacommand.png at enemy ADC, this will often cause them to move back and possibly miss cs. If they stay in range and you have spare mana, cast orianadissonancecommand.png for extra damage.

Teamfights

Use orianaredactcommand.png to shield the diver/lowest health ally depending on the situation. Shielding the diver will often place your ball in a good position for other ability casts.
You will almost always have items with actives in your build, learn to use them as instinctively as your core abilities.
Always keep track of where your ball is, because the path it takes and it's position during ability casts are very important. Some champion's abilities might cause your ball to return to you, so always make sure you know where your ball is before casting orianadetonatecommand.png.
Don't be afraid to rush into the enemy team to save an ally, your build will often make you surprisingly tanky and slippery. Additionally, if the enemy team is chasing a low health enemy, they will often ignore you as you're not a threat to them. If an enemy focuses you, use orianadissonancecommand.png to run out of their range, while poking them with orianaizunacommand.pngorianaredactcommand.png and basic attacks. This is especially effective against melee champions, allowing your teammates to burst them down while they're trying to kill you.
Using orianadissonancecommand.png in a static teamfight is often unnecessary, save it for later when it's needed.

Pros and Cons

Pros:
  • Long range shield
  • Much improved chase and escape for the entire team
  • Potentially game-changing ultimate
  • Works well when the ADC is playing aggressively...
Cons:
  • ...not quite so well when they're playing very safe
  • Almost no dueling potential, often unable to finish off low health enemies
  • Needs focus and attention, a lot of things to keep track of (item actives, ball positioning, navigating jungle without flash)
  • Shield has a potentially long travel time
  • Unlike some supports (such as Soraka), playing Orianna support requires your team to know how to use the advantage you give them. If your team is bad and they don't have the tactical skills and knowledge, there might be little you can do to help them. On such occasions best option is to build as much utility as you can to keep your team alive (e.g. 3107.png3190.png and 3174.png).
