Summoner Spells Back to Top

Want to see this guide in action? Chat about Rakan? Follow me on Twitch!
And now with the shameless self-promotion out of the way, lets get on with the guide. :D Thanks!

4.png A summoner spell that nearly everyone takes on every champion. Rakan needs this because he sometimes has to escape tricky situations, or needs to get in range of an ally to save himself.

3.png Exhaust is a great spell that allows you to duel and skrimish high DPS champions that have windows of damage that increase, such as Vayne, Twitch or Yasuo much more easily, or chase down a fleeing enemy.

14.png Ignite is a spell that has better synergy with bursty, all-in champions like Zed, Lucian or Elise. You can help secure kills (or steal them!) and this spell works well against lanes where there are few shields or heals (such as Lucian/Zyra or Twitch/Braum). It's also important to take versus champions that heal, such as Sona or Soraka.

New Runes Back to Top

Guardian is a must, it synergizes so well with his shield ability and gives your ADC extra mobility. The rest of the Resolve tree is more flexible depending on the team comps you're facing.

The Inspiration tree is essentially free gold and stats that you need to stay safe until you hit level 6.

Masteries Back to Top

0/18/12 or 0/12/18 is the optimal path for Rakan, similar to other supports that have strong synergy lanes.

In Cunning, you want to probably take Wanderer to get to lane faster and to engage on enemies. Secret stash is the best support mastery on the second tier, as well as Meditation for the mana regen. Dangerous Game is an all-around excellent ability for a champion that loves to go in and out quickly like Rakan. You should take Intelligence for the cooldown reduction and CDR cap increase, and then get Windspeaker's Blessing for your Keystone mastery.

In Ferocity, take the ability power increase of Sorcery, Expose Weakness to help all-in the enemy laners, Natural Talent to help your scaling throughout the game, and Battle Trance to help increase your damage to finish off enemies after you go for plays.

Q: When do I take Courage of the Colossus?

Courage of the Colossus allows you to get a shield easily when you W or R an enemy, which would be stronger than any extra shield you would get from Windspeaker's blessing, and your heal and shield are also already improved by Runic armor to mitigate not having Windspeaker's Blessing.

Q: When do I take Windspeaker's Blessing?

A: Rakan has three shields at any given time, as well as an AoE heal that works for himself as well as an ally. Rakan loves to save allies that are close to death, like Ivern or Karma. Giving him more CDR and stronger shields and heals will allow you to ride team fights to the brink and come out on top. If you're going to miss your W, you'll also have no shield, so be careful against high mobility lanes.

Abilities Back to Top

The Combo:

rakane.png ---> rakanw.png ---> xayahpassive.png ---> rakanq.png ---> xayahpassive.png ---> rakanr.png ---> rakane.png

E             W            AA             Q             AA            R             E

rakanpassive.png Passive: Fey Feathers

INNATE: Rakan's periodically generates a 33 - 254 (based on level) (+ 90% AP) shieldDamaging an enemy champion reduces Fey Feathers cooldown by 1 second.

Static Cooldown: 40-16 (based on level)

SPECIAL RECALL: Lover’s Leap

If either Xayah or Rakan is recalling, the other may move nearby to join them.

rakanq.png Q: Gleaming Quill

ACTIVE: Rakan slings and enchanted feather forward, dealing magic damage to the first enemy hit.

If that enemy was a champion of epic monster, a small circular area is marked around Rakan. After a short period of time or if allied champion comes into contact with the marked area, Rakan heals surrounding allies by 23-150 (based on level) (+ 70% AP)

Cooldown: 12 / 10.5 / 9 / 7.5 / 6 seconds

Cost: 60 Mana

Magic Damage: 70 / 115 / 160 / 205 / 250 (+ 50% AP)

rakanw.png W: Grand Entrance

ACTIVE: Rakan dashes forward, landing stylishly at his destination.

After a dramatic pause, he leaps into the air, delaing magic damage and knocking up surrounding enemies for 1 second.

Cost: 50 / 60 / 70 / 80 / 90 Mana

Cooldown: 18 / 16.5 / 15 / 13.5 / 12

Magic Damage: 70 / 115 / 160 / 205 / 250 (+ 50% AP)

rakane.png E: Battle Dance

Active: Rakan leaps to an allied champion, shielding them for 3 seconds. Battle Dance can be re-cast again for 5 seconds at no cost. If Xayah’s the target, Rakan rushes to her aid from an increased distance.

Battle Dance's casts may select the same target twice.

Battle Dance has increased range if the target is Xayah.

Cost: 50 / 60 / 70 / 80 / 90 Mana

Cooldown: 20 / 18 /16 /14 / 12 seconds

Shield:  50 / 75 / 100 / 125 / 150 (+ 80% AP)

rakanr.png R: The Quickness

ACTIVE: Rakan enchants his coat with a captivating sheen for the next 4 seconds, dealing magic damage and charming each enemy he touches. Enemies can only be affected once.

Rakan benefits from 50% bonus movement speed during the duration, which is briefly increased to 200% upon first damaging an enemy champion before decaying back down to 50%.

Cost: 100 Mana

Cooldown: 120 / 110 / 100

Magic Damage: 100 / 200 / 300 (+ 50% AP)

Charm duration: 1 / 1.25 / 1.5

Q: Do I max E or W first?

A: Which basic skills you max first depends on your lane and your playstyle. There is logic to both maxing E and W. If you are versus a heavy poke lane (Caitlyn/Brand for example) then maxing E will probably help you win the lane. However, if you're versus a low mobility lane (Twitch/Braum) then maxing W can help you all-in and ake advantage of their low mobility at level 1 or level 2.

I like maxing E because it provides more mobility, has a better AP ratio, better suits a support play style and reduces the cooldown. The heal on Q only increases with level, not points in the skill.

Q: Why max W over Q?

Rakan's entire rotation is based on landing the knockup on his W. The damage from Grand Entrance is much easier to hit than Rakan's Q, which is relatively short ranged and the heal doesn't scale off of points, but champion level. It's also much easier to hit his Q when an enemy is knocked up already, so we should max W and go for the safer damage combo than a poking style of laning.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

    You're a support. 'Nuff said.
As an AP support, this item helps you more than any other starting item, and helps you to get items faster with it's Gold per 10 passive.

Core Items

A strong and important support item, even after nerfs. Excellent teamfight utility.
CDR boots versus mixed damage teams, Ninja Tabi or Mercury Treads versus AD and AP teams respectively
Another important support and utility item that gives crucial teamfight shields.
An excellent item that gives you 10% CDR and HP. Get this in most situations.

Situational Items

An excellent item that Rakan can buy to get tanky versus AP teams
A highly underrated item versus teams that lack autoattackers.
Versus heavy CC teams, this is a great buy if you have a squishy team comp.
A great item if your team has lots of auto attack-based champions.

You should start with a Spellthief's Edge 3303.png first with 3 potions 2003.png in almost all cases.

Versus heavy AP teams, you want to make sure you get lots of Magic Resist items like Locket of the Iron Solari 3190.png as early as possible, thanks to the passive stats and active ability shield that it gives you. A mid/late game Spirit Visage 3065.png can make you insanely tanky and gives you the HP, CDR and Health/Health Regeneration to survive intense teamfights.

Against AD based teams, consider getting Redemption 3107.png as your first complete item after your first back and purchasing Nomad's Medallion Frostfang 3098.png and Sightstone 2049.png. It's important to counter DPS champions with Redemption once you enter teamfights, with allows you to also prevent your teammates (especially tanks) from getting burned down too quickly in teamfights.

Late game, pressure items like Zz'rot Portal 3512.png will help you and your team force objectives and control lanes, as will Banner of Command, but be aware that banner needs to be only bought against AP teams and used so that it doesn't die or push too quickly. 3060.png

Matchups Back to Top

Click on a champion below to see the author's notes on that particular matchup.

  • Alistar
  • Annie
  • Bard
  • Blitzcrank
  • Braum
  • Fiddlesticks
  • Karma
  • Leona
  • Lulu
  • Lux
  • Malphite
  • Malzahar
  • Miss Fortune
  • Morgana
  • Nami
  • Nautilus
  • Nunu
  • Sona
  • Soraka
  • Tahm Kench
  • Taric
  • Thresh
  • Trundle
  • Vel'Koz
  • Zyra

Be careful about going in on an Alistar's ADC, he might knock you up and hit you back into his turret if you're too close. Try to pressure him early with Q poke and outsustain him. If you see a good 2-man knockup, go for it and then get out.

Engaging on Annie's ADC with her stun up is a recipe for getting blown up instantly. You have to go for the Annie or not go in at all.

Rakan can murder a Bard before the Bard can react at all. Squishy champions with low mobility is what Rakan lanes prey upon.

You should be able to dodge his hook with your E easily... and then he's useless. But that's not saying anything for your ADC!

A slightly tougher lane due to the tanky nature of Braum, and if you go in and he auto attacks you, you might end up stunned and dead before you know it.

A skill matchup, just a bunch of spam and shields in this lane. It really mostly depends on your ability to dodge her ultimate Q, which does insane damage. Try to bait it out.

Tanky CC machine that will take very little poke damage but then instantly murder you if you ever try to go in. Your best bet is to dodge her ult with your E and try to poke her out with Q.

Lulu has shields, knockups and tons of disruption, plus lots of damage. She lacks the same playmaking ability of other supports, but she does protection amazingly well.

Avoid her ultimates by dashing to a teammate. She's incredibly immobile so it's up to you to make the Grand Entrance picks, not wait for your ADC to make a move.

He Q's you, your shield absorbs it. He ults you, you E their carry and then kill them. Easy peasy.

His voidlings will wreck you at level 1-2, so be careful. Get his shield down with Qs, and then go for knockups and dashbacks to your teammates. Try to get his flash out and consider buying Mikael's early.

Miss Fortune

The hyper mobility of Rakan makes dodging Morgana's Q easy. Once her snare has missed, she's a free kill. If the Morgana is smart, she'll Black Shield everything you try and do to their ADC. though. Only go in once that ability is off cooldown.

If you can hit a good 2-man knockup, it should win you the fight, but if you don't hit Nami, she'll bubble you as soon as you dive in.

Nautilus is a big, tanky CC machine. He can snare you as soon as you come out of your knockup, and then you'll just get smashed. Be very careful.

Nunu support is god-awful.

Poke for days, but you can shield yourself AND an ally on a decent cooldown, and Q her when she walks up, effectively negating her damage. Just watch out for her ultimate.

An annoying lane, but you should be able to land your Grand Entrance on her, or at least get her flash at level 3-4.

Tahm Kench

Tahm Kench is a master of saving his ADC - and tanky to boot. It's hard to do much to the enemy ADC when his Devour is off of cooldown.

He's annoyingly tanky and is mostly susceptible to getting burst down instead of DPSed. Try to play around his stun and bait it with your E.

Thresh is an annoying CC machine that can save his ADC similar to the way that Rakan can. Thresh is a playmaker like Rakan, so it's a skill matchup.

A rather easy matchup, just jump to your lane partner any time one of you eats a pillar. After that you should be able to counter-attack and win the fights.

You can absorb most of his Q damage with you E and passive shield, and then stop his ultimate with your E very easily. No mobility, but you can negate his poke with your shields and heal.

She has insane poke DPS, so try to avoid hitting plants with your Q and shield any time she uses her Q, but be sure that you don't dash into her snare and root yourself in the process.

ADC Synergy Tier List Back to Top

498.png Xayah: Obviously Xayah is Rakan's true partner, and gets extra range on his E and an additional ability on his W if she's in the game with you.

429.png Kalista: Excellent combination with Rakan. Her ult knockup, followed you your ult knockup and then charm should be enough CC to get a kill on most squishy champions.

22.png Ashe: CC lock and slows for days. Just an excellent champion to pair with Rakan who scales well into late game. Rakan loves ADCs that bring utility to the team.

51.png Caitlyn: USing Rakan's knockup, similar to an Alistar or Blitzcrank combo, Caitlyn can trap an enemy and get her full rotation off (sometimes even twice trapping the same target)

202.png Jhin: Rakan can set up easy snares and help Jhin land easy traps and ult damage, but isn't necessarily one of the best ADCs to pair Rakan with.

222.png Jinx: Makes for easy trapping and can help Jinx chase down enemies quickly, since Jinx has no mobility. Still, the lane lacks true synergy.

96.png Kog'Maw: High damage and DPS, but very little CC. Still, if you let him get his autos off by diving and engaging the enemy, you can probably win most 2v2's if the Kog'Maw is good enough.

236.png Lucian: Mobility and Mobility, Lucian is a strong duelist than Rakan can play off of, but sometimes you'll find that your kits don't match due to the cooldown differences of the two champions.

21.png Miss Fortune: A lot of good ultimate combo potential, but since she doesn't have much CC outside of her slow and doesn't duel particularly well, Rakan won't be able to make plays off of her.

29.png Twitch: Twitch can work well with a Rakan, if the Twitch sneaks up and Rakan jumps to him and then knocks up an enemy before they suspect he's even there. This will allow Twitch to get a very nice ultimate off.

42.png Corki: Offers little CC of his own, and does a lot of magic damage, meaning that your bot lane will be easy to itemize against. Still, Corki with a lead can 1v2 most lanes, so not terrible.

81.png Ezreal: No CC at all, and mostly a poke lane, which isn't really what Rakan is best at. Rakan wants to all-in while Ezreal wants to chip away and then go in.

133.png Quinn: Two knockups and a charm on a single target can be a lot of CC to output from this botlane, but it's hard to match the CC up without knowing when your Quinn is going in.

15.png Sivir: She has a lot of good waveclear and late game, but her utility ultimate isn't really something that Rakan needs to be mobile and catch people, which he can do by himself.

115.png Ziggs: Rakan can do a decent job protecting Ziggs, but Rakan doesn't really like playing with lane pushing champions. He prefers skirmishing and team fights instead of just waveclear.

D- Tier

18.png Tristana: Already a weak laner, Rakan offers little more than shields and heals for protection. She still suffers the same problems in lane due to her weak kit and reliance on auto attacking, but can't skirmish a all.

67.png Vayne: Rakan's knockup doesn't do much to help Vayne land wall stuns and her tumble is on such a low cooldown that good Vayne players should take little poke damage, which means Rakan is just a heal bot for her.

110.png Varus: He doesn't need healing and CC as much as he needs a bodyguard that will peel for him. Rakan can peel and shield and heal, but if you're caught out by a jungler, it's likely that Varus dies no matter what you do.

Tips and Tricks Back to Top

Basic Tips:

- Remember, Rakan can jump walls with his W. Use it to escape from ganks and sticky situations where you'd otherwise die.

- Ping your teammates when you need to use them to jump over a wall! Listen to other Rakan players when they ping you to come to a wall!

- Stay behind your ADC when you're both full HP, you're still in a viable range make plays if you jump to them, knock up the enemy laners, and then dash back to your ADC.

- You can bait out enemy abilities by playing intentionally too far up in the lane, then dashing to your ADC when the enemy uses their CC on you.

- Start jungle ganks by instantly using W on the enemy laners and trying to get them to use their flash as fast as possible.

- If you have 75g in your wallet, buy another pink ward, you're going to need it eventually.

- Don't die before level 6! It sounds crazy but you can CC the enemy bot lane for almost a full 4 seconds by yourself once you hit level 6. After that, you can go wild.

Advanced Tips:

- If you take ignite versus an immobile laner, consider taking your W and knocking the enemy laners up instantly as soon as you get to lane and they use their first abilities. Igniting and autoing them with your ADC should allow you to get the edge and take first blood.

- Rakan excels at shadowing a teammate that is split pushing and turning a 1v2 into a winning 2v2 with your insane CC and utility. Staying just out of sight of Xayah,

- When you go for an all-in in a 5v5 situation, E to your closest teammate and then again to your teammate who is furthest away, never forget to use your second E if you can help it.

- Be careful when going for Flash-W plays, you can often put yourself too deep into enemy territory with no way to escape if you don't have allies to follow up with you.
- Rakan's E shield and jump has a 5 second cooldown. Learn to internalize this as quickly as possible and always use it to back up off of the wave if you can. His shield only lasts 3 seconds, so use it again after 3 seconds if you have no chance to engage.

- Get an early Forbidden Idol. It will increase your shields on your allies. It's 500 free gold worth of stats in a full E-W-Q-E rotation.

- Remember that Rakan's E will always place him on the opposite side of his ally than when he jumped, essentially sending him through his allied champion that he dashes to. Be aware of this in ganking and engage situations.
