Summoner Spells Back to Top

Flash allows you to make plays off of your W and E, as well as get you out of sticky situations. You won't find yourself getting too much more than a gimmicky ult out of ghost, so steer clear of it. Exhaust is the best in my opinion but go with what you feel the team needs.

I have seen Rakan's take ignite and while it can work - RAKAN IS NOT ABOUT DOING DAMAGE. take it if you need it, but prefer exhaust.

New Runes Back to Top

Masteries Back to Top

Why: I think there’s no substitute keystone for Windspeaker’s Blessing, it’s too good on Rakan. Take Wanderer, Biscuits, Meditation, Dangerous Game, Intelligence, and Windspeakers in Cunning, and in Resolve take Unyeilding, Exploerer, Runic Armor, and Insight. (Fearless can be a desirable choice as well over Insight)

OTHER OPTIONS

Agrokan

12-18-0 / Windspeaker’s Blessing

A bit more on the wild side, take Sorcery, Expose Weakness, Natural Talent, and Battle Trance from Ferocity, and then Wanderer, Biscuits, Meditation, Dangerous Game, Intelligence, and Windspeakers in Cunning. I take the ferocity tree mainly for Expose weakness, since being able to initiate a fight and make the 3 second cc locked enemies (Knock up into Charm) take more damage from the allies coming in to fight with you, since Rakan should never fight alone, is crazy strong from what I’ve seen. You lose a fair bit of tankiness, but overall Rakan won’t suffer too hard if you’re playing smart (which I have not been personally but I see the potential). He’s not build to frontline like Malphite is, after all.

Super Hard Tank

0-12-18 / Stoneborn OR Colossus

Take Wanderer, Biscuits, Meditation, Dangerous Game from Cunning, and Unyeilding, Exploerer, Runic Armor, Insight, Swiftness, and Keystone Choice from Resolve. This is possible to run, but if you’re looking to be a hard tank, why are you picking Rakan? This should be a last resort, “I picked Rakan early but then everyone else picked super squishy and I have to frontline alone” mastery choice.

TL;DR

Take Q –> W –> E

After level 3, Max skills in this priority order:

Max R

Then Max E/W (see below)

Then Max E/W (see below)

Then Max Q

W or E?: While W doesn’t get longer in CC terms with levels, it DOES get a shorter CD which, considering its your big initiation spell, is good to have often. Max W first if the enemy adc has little mobility (Twitch, Jhin) but go for it second if you’re up against someone like Cait or Ez who will jump out of any W you throw with ease. His Q heal does not get strong enough base to warrant maxing it, the 90% AP scaling on the Q will handle the healing you need.

SKILL BREAKDOWN

Passive

rakanpassive.png

- Fey Feathers / Lover's Leap -

You should always wait for the shield from this ability to come up before making any big engages. It scales off of both level and 90% AP, so falling behind early will make this passive VERY weak - don't expect it to be a key factor in making a comeback. However, it can help sustain in lane along with the Q.

For its secondary effect, leap into Xayah's arms whenever you can to make a quick (and fabulous) getaway back to base. In lane, when your Xayah indicates she wants to go back, back off early and begin recalling so she can save time finishing off a wave, and jump to you for a quick recall.

Q

rakanq.png

- Gleaming Quill -

This is your main poke ability, as well as your healing ability. It does not do a lot of damage (low base + 50% AP scaling) but the heal is potent (scaling with level and 70% AP). Since the heal scales with level and not with skill rank, you can leave this skill at first level and still benefit from large heals. There is no reason to level this ability more than once before end game.

W

rakanw.png

- Grand Entrance -

Your go-to engage spell. The delay on this skill is pretty long, but its leap range is usually enough that it doesn't matter too much. Look to toss this skill out whenever an uppity carry gets a little too far forward, and don't be afraid to springboard off of an engaging ally (like a malphite ult) using you E to combo into a rakanw.png Grand Entrance on the back line.

E

rakane.png

- Battle Dance -

Once you dash to an ally and shield them, you have 5 seconds to cast this ability again on any ally you choose. Unlike other champions, this second dash is not cancelled if you use other abilities. Thus, you can rakane.png dance on over to an ally, leap into the fray with rakanw.png Grand Entrance, score a heal from your rakanq.png Gleaming Quill, catch a few people with rakanr.png The Quickness, and rakane.png dance back to your lovely Xayah (or other ADC) in time for lunch. This ability will start and end all of your combos.

R

rakanr.png

- The Quickness -

Once you activate this ability, Rakan's body becomes 200 pounds of Damage, CC, and Sex Appeal. Activating this ability simply turns your entire body into a hit box - it does not stop you from using other abilities. Use your myriad of dashes and movement abilities to charm as many people as possible while setting up your team. Rakan still has a hitbox during all of his dashes, use them wisely!

Starting Items

Always a good start on rakan

Core Items

    Core items - see description
usual endgame build - see description

Situational Items

see description for when to use these

CORE ITEMS – BASIC BUILD

(CORE) Eye of the Watchers – Rakan is one of the few supports that benefits from a lot of items, but not from any of the 3 core support items that I can tell. (targons is situational, talisman is not helpful, and ghosties are weak with his kit, but situational). Its HP, Mana Regen, Gold per, and CDR, all which help him, packed into a sightstone which is core.

(CORE) Redemption – Extra power on heals and shields, along with good HP and regen + CDR and a strong active. IMO this is a key item and should not be missed.

(CORE) Mercury Treads / Ninja Tabi – Situational, default to Treads. Take Tabi if there are 3+ AD enemies and at least 2 of them rely on auto attacks.

Locket of the Iron Solari – More shields, and both defensive stats. What’s not to love?

Ardent Censer – Rakan at any time has 2 shields (3 with locket) and a heal, meaning he can apply ardent censer to an entire team, something only Karma or Soraka could do previously. However, its not as free as just pressing R like on raka or R-E on Karma, so to make this item devastating on Rakan shields and heals need to be played properly. While certainly very strong I am unsure if this is a core item yet. More testing needed.

Zeke’s Harbinger - Now this is where you say “Rayden, you’re high as hell. What is this item doing on any build?” but hear me out, I did the math. It gives Armor, Mana, AP, and CDR (bringing Rakan to a crisp even 40-45% CDR based on mastery). In addition, the passive of linking to your adc gives you both 50% crit chance and 20% Ability Power when it procs, and Rakan’s movement means you’ll near always be in range. This works amazing on ADC’s that priorities damage / attack sped over crit early *Cough*XAYAH*Cough* and the extra 20% bonus can pop Rakan’s shields and heals up during a big fight. This is also the most situational and most replaced item in the build.

OTHER ITEMS

Athene’s Unholy Grail – My Go-to replacement item. When used in place of Zeke’s  it brings AR/MR numbers to a more even 141/157 (From 171/127 in the base build) and rakan’s premitigation damage stacks the chalice very fast. Gives 20% cdr, 10% of which is lost if this is the only item replaced. However, adding an extra heal to rakan’s shields can be a very strong thing. Take this item over Zeke’s Harbringer if your ADC is a caster, or does not benefit from the AP/Crit Bonus, or if you just need the more well-rounded defence stats.

Banner of Command – Defensive alternative to Zeke’s Harbringer or Locket, giving both defenses and a strong pushing presence in the late game. Plus, it gives 10% CDR, keeping you maxed out. Take it over Locket if the need for more armor arises, else replace Zeke’s if you really need the pushing power.

Knight’s Vow – More Health and More armor makes Rakan something something. While the active can be nice for the healing, having Rakan take true damage for his carry can end up getting them both killed. Take this item sparingly. If taking this, replace Locket or Censer with it, as the Zeke’s active can give out strong healing when coupled with this.

Zz’rot Portal – I’ve seen people build it. It can work alright, good defense stats and a potentially good active. Personally, I’d choose Banner of Command over this every time, but there may be situations that this is better. Keep it in mind, but don’t look to use it.

Blitzcrank

A hooked ADC is just a free ticket into a full Rakan combo. He should never be hitting you anyways, with your mobility.

VS

Braum

Easy

Braum cant stop Rakan fast enough. You'll be in, do your stuff, and out before the poor guy can blink.

VS

Leona

Hard
You know what sucks for a damage lacking, high mobility tank? Being locked down. Forever. It SUCKS. Leona forces you to sit on your carry in lane, and stuffs you straight out of and dash you make towards her with her Q.

VS

Lulu

Hard

Lulu is a great support right now and will shut down everything you want to do.

VS

Nami

Medium

Skill Based MU.

VS

Nautilus

Hard
Same as Leona, a point and click CC train to hell leaves Rakan flopping around like a fish out of water. You knock him up, then he knocks you down.

Combos Back to Top

Basic Harass Combo

rakane.png - rakanw.png - AA - rakanq.png - AA - rakane.png

First, jump to your ADC to shield them and provide a bit of protection on the upcoming engage. Dive into the enemy carry with Grand Entrance, Auto attack, Gleaming Quill, Auto attack, and dash back to reapply the shield and deliver a heal to your carry.

Teamfight /All In Combo

rakane.png - rakanw.png - rakanr.png - AA - rakanq.png - AA - rakane.png

For teamfights or big ganks, start by using another ally as a launching pad to leap into the enemy team to begin a fight, or deliver a shield to a teammate who has engaged already and fling yourself towards the backline. From there, pop the quickness as they recover from the knock-up to score some extra cc time and a free hit. Land your Quill on the charmed enemy(s) and from there, quickly assess the situation and who needs the second shield the most. Strike all out of the way enemies with The Quickness, while lining yourself up to charm any remaining enemies on your way back with Battle Dance.

Situational Combo

rakane.png - rakane.png - rakanw.png - AA -rakanr.png - AA - rakanq.png

For this situational combo, you wan't to shield first your ADC to give them the buffs of any items like Ardent Censer and a shield for the upcoming fight if they are being focused. Immediately use your second shield to leap to your frontline, and into the enemy team with a Grand Entrance. Take a wallop on whoever you catch and kick into the quickness. Run around charming and damaging the enemy as best you can before your ult ends. With about a second left on The Quickness, land a goodbye smack with a Glimmering Quill and deliver a nice heal to whoever is in need of it.

Who to Use Rakan With Back to Top

498.pngXayah – Duh.

236.pngLucian – Dude loves attack speed and crit damage, so give him that zeke’s. His mobility also plays into yours very well, and you can lock people into a full culling.

29.pngTwitch – can act as an invisible platform to E-W into an enemy team that thought they were safely out of your range. In addition, twitch loves his crit, and you can lock enemies down for his ult to destroy them.

22.pngAshe – You can start a fight and peel for her, and you lock people down for ages when combined with her ult. In lane, her slow can guarantee your abilities to hit.

429.pngKalista – I hate this champion with a passion, but being able to throw Rakan into an enemy team for a knock up, for him to then knock them up again, and charm them back into your team? I can’t deny, it sounds deadly. Plus, she can pull you out of a tight spot if you overextend and can’t E back to your team.

119.pngDraven - Tons of damage combined with tons of lockdown can lead to a seriously strong lane presence, steamrolling into a strong mid and late game.

Tips and Tricks Back to Top

Once you activate rakanr.png The Quickness Rakan's body becomes a giant hitbox of damage and charm. Something to note is that you can still use ALL OF YOUR ABILITIES AND SUMMONER SPELLS DURING THIS. Popping it before sliding in with Grand Entrance may reduce the overall time an enemy is CC'ed, but it will guarentee that a high priority target won't be flashing out of your knockup.
