Summoner Spells Back to Top

As a top laner, your best choices for summoner spells are 4.pngFlash and 12.pngTeleport.

4.pngFlash
Always a good spell choice to have due to its versatility. Because you are top and have no allied champions with you, you will generally lack your rakane.pngBattle Dance (E) dash during the laning phase, so if your rakanw.pngGrand Entrance (W) is on cooldown, you will still have an escape. Or, alternatively, it can allow for great engages with rakanr.pngThe Quickness (R).

12.pngTeleport
Generally the best spell to take top lane. Not only is it useful for getting back into lane quickly to avoid missing CS, but it is also useful for ganking other lanes early, and having map presence near objectives later on.

Other options:

6.pngGhost
Take this if you want to feel like a beautiful 120.pngHecarim with your R.

3.pngExhaust
This might be a nice spell to have against certain champions, but I wouldn't recommend it unless you're support. If you are, why are you here?

14.pngIgnite
It's your choice if you'd like to take this, but it would be most useful if the enemy team has a 16.pngSoraka, or a 50.pngSwain, or a 19.pngWarwick, or anyone with a decent amount of healing. Especially if no one on your team has taken ignite.

New Runes Back to Top

This is my typical rune setup for 497.pngRakan top. Some of the choices are largely situational, which I will explain below.

Resolve

Aftershock.png?width=32Aftershock
I take this one over the other options because 1) it feels more impactful than Grasp%20of%20the%20Undying.png?width=32Grasp of the Undying, and 2) you are top lane, so Guardian.png?width=32Guardian is useless for you throughout the entire laning phase.

Font%20of%20Life.png?width=32Font of Life
You'll probably want to build tanky early and itemize as a support in the late game. In the current meta, ADCs are usually the most important part of a team due to their consistent damage output. So when it comes to late game, you'll probably want to peel literally everyone off your ADC. And by that time, you should have just about max CDR, so you'll be able to go in and out of teamfights often using your rakanw.pngGrand Entrance (W) and rakane.pngBattle Dance (E). If you like using Demolish.png?width=32Demolish, that is also a valid option. Towers are important too.

Conditioning.png?width=32Conditioning
This one's a toss-up depending on the enemy team. And since you can change your runes in champ select now, you should do so. If you see the enemy team is all AD except for a Janna support, you could definitely take Iron%20Skin.png?width=32Iron Skin instead because you can activate the armor bonus yourself with your rakanq.pngGleaming Quill (Q).

Revitalize.png?width=32Revitalize
I would recommend this one due to 497.pngRakan's natural supportness, although Overgrowth.png?width=32Overgrowth can also be a decent option if you have absolutely no faith in your team. Tank them all! Win the game by yourself!

Sorcery

Scorch.png?width=32Scorch
I like this because it gives you decent trades early before they can heal it back.

Nullifying%20Orb.png?width=32Nullifying Orb
The second option is really up to you, but choosing this one increases your early survivability if you are against AP. If not, you might want to take something else. Most of the other options are valid.

Max rakanq.pngGleaming Quill (Q) first because its base damage at higher ranks gives you good poke.
rakanw.pngGrand Entrance (W) is your main mobility and CC, so max that second because it reduces the cooldown.
You don't need to put a point in rakane.pngBattle Dance (E) until level 4 or 5 because it will only be useful in ganks, and max it last.
And of course, upgrade rakanr.pngThe Quickness (R) at levels 6, 11, and 16.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Good HP/mana sustain and works well with the Scorch rune.

Core Items

I like the movespeed and the slow effect of a max-stack auto. I usually rush this in a lane vs AD, *edit: After further testing I have realized that this doesn't give a slow for Rakan. So I guess he only counts as melee when it doesn't benefit him, eh?
Good synergy with Rakan's heal. Typically rush this vs AP.
Take Iceborn for the slow/AOE, or Trinity for the attack speed. Personally I'm liking Trinity better right now because my passive comes up faster.
Take Tabis if two or more of them are autoattack based. Take Mercs if they have lots of CC.
Build this as a 4th-6th item depending on when lane phase ends/ended in order to transition into a second support.
Build this 4th-6th in order to transition into a second support. Bind to either your ADC or, if they're not doing well, consider binding to your jungler or midlaner. Or, perhaps with some decent supporting your ADC can actually carry.
Take this as a 4th-6th item to transition into a support role. Probably avoid building it if another teammate has it already, as its effects are reduced by 50%.
Build this as a 4th-6th item to transition into a support role. Don't build it if another teammate has one because its effects are reduced by 50%.

Situational Items

Good item to have if you'd like to buff the damage your AP teammate(s) deal.
I personally don't like this item, not sure why. But if you do like it, definitely build it as one of your 2-3 support items.
Build this against that dumbass Teemo. Or Singed. Or Malzahar. Anyone with damage over time abilities.
Good for split-pushing; if you took the Demolish rune, this can be a decent buy.
    GOTTA GO FAST
Gives you a bit of waveclear.

VS

Blitzcrank

Medium

Not a particularly hard top matchup (and not common, either!)

Be wary of his rocketgrab.pngRocket Grabs (Q) under his tower.

VS

Fiora

Medium

I've faced Fiora twice so far, and have won both times. Winning this matchup relies largely on baiting her fioraw.pngRiposte (W) so that she cannot stun you during your rakanw.pngGrand Entrance (W) or rakanr.pngThe Quickness (R).

You won't win a level 1 all-in due to her constant fioraq.pngLunges (Q), but if you play right, you can poke her with rakanq.pngGleaming Quill (Q) and out-sustain her before she gets lifesteal items. She's also squishy enough for you to 1v1 her.

VS

Gangplank

Hard

What an annoyance. All Gangplanks these days have Kleptomancy.png?width=32Kleptomancy as their keystone rune, and most of them start with 3303.pngSpellthief's Edge for all the gold it grants.

He'll probably just hit you with a bunch of gangplankqwrapper.pngParrrley's (Q), so you'll probably have to recall somewhat early once you can afford a 1031.pngChain Vest or something.

Ask for ganks.

VS

Gnar

Medium

Poke with rakanq.pngGleaming Quill (Q), and go in for short trades until he's low enough to probably all-in. If he extends the trade by tossing a bunch of crap at you, you'll probably lose more health than him, but you can heal it back.

VS

Illaoi

Medium

Bait and dodge her illaoie.pngTest of Spirit (E) so she can't get free damage off you. Dodge her illaoiq.pngTentacle Smash (Q). Don't fight her during her illaoir.pngLeap of Faith (R).

VS

Maokai

Easy

You really will not be able to kill this guy without ganks, but also shouldn't be able to kill you. Focus on farming. Be wary of facechecking brush; he may have left you a present. And by that I mean 50 maokaie.pngSaplings that are going to murder your ass.

VS

Nasus

Easy

Early game Nasus? pfft

Really though, you will probably have a tough time zoning him from stacking his nasusq.pngSiphoning Strike (Q) without ganks. You might want to get one or two full items and focus mainly on getting your team ahead. Watch the minimap for possible 12.pngTeleport opportunities.

VS

Nautilus

Hard

He's tanky, and has 4 CC abilities to keep you locked down. Play safe unless you get a gank.

VS

Ornn

Hard

Dodge. :l

Honestly though, try to cs without taking sass from his ornnw.pngBellows Breath (W). That's his fire. Don't engage him when he's doing that, because it makes him unstoppable and any cc you put on him will be useless.

Try to sustain and keep your tower alive.

VS

Pantheon

Medium

Similar to 41.pngGangplank, he's gonna just throw pantheonq.pngSpear Shots (Q) at ya til he's either out of mana or you're out of health. Hopefully you can land some rakanq.pngGleaming Quills (Q) for sustain, and once he's out of mana you can hit him with rakanw.pngGrand Entrance (W) and possibly all-in if you've hit 6.

VS

Rakan

Hard

What even.

VS

Riven

Medium

Don't go in for a trade unless her riventricleave.pngBroken Wings (Q) is on cooldown; she will outdamage you. Play fairly safe and don't let her snowball off killing you.

VS

Yasuo

Medium

Early game is when you thrive - and he doesn't. Dodge his tornadoes at least and you should be fine.

If you want to go in, be careful as he is able to dash all over the goddamn place. Perhaps save your rakanw.pngGrand Entrance (W) until he dashes onto you, and then cast it in place immediately.

Remember, make quick trades, ideally when Aftershock.png?width=32Aftershock is up.

VS

Yorick

Medium

Wait for him to use his yorickw.pngDark Procession (W) before your rakanw.pngGrand Entrance (W) so that you don't get trapped.

Tips and Basic Ra-combos (heh) Back to Top

These combos are for any role you play Rakan in. I'll try to post videos of each example.

Basic engage pre-6:

rakanw.png > rakanq.png > rakane.png

Supposing you've managed to land everything, this combo will knock up the enemy and give you a heal which you will use on your ally when you dash to them.

Basic engage post-6:

rakanr.png > rakanw.png > rakanq.png > rakane.png

Same thing, except it's harder for the enemies to dodge the knockup because they will be charmed by your ult.

Hardcore engage:

rakanr.png > 4.png > rakanw.png > rakanq.png > rakane.png

This one can screw you over if you miss any CC, because you'll have burned your flash for, well, nothing. Begin by activating your ult and flashing into their team at the same time, and quickly run to charm them all into a tighter group before you knock them up. The charm duration is short so do it fast.

General tips:

In solo lanes, go for quick trades as nearly any champion can out-duel you in extended fights.

Your rakanq.png heal zone can heal more than one ally if you touch two+ allies with it.

Once you have 3504.pngArdent Censer, apply your rakane.png shield to your most attack speed oriented allies during fights such as 157.pngYasuo, 51.pngCaitlyn, or 268.pngAzir.

Pros/Cons Back to Top

Pros:

  • High mobility
  • Sustain
  • Two CC abilities
  • Decent base damage early
  • If you stomp your lane opponent, they may become tilted from losing to a support!
  • Highly unlikely to be counterpicked in champion select, at least not as a solo lane matchup
  • Fun voicelines (especially with a 498.pngXayah!)

Ra-cons (heh):
  • Damage falls off
  • Very reliant on team being at least a little bit competent
  • Not for people who hate supporting
  • Probably not a good idea to pick this in ranked

About Me Back to Top

Hello, my summoner name is Rekt Myself and I main Rakan in Silver III. So, I don't know how useful this guide would be in higher elo. It's good fun, though, unless your team flames you. But they shouldn't unless you lose. Don't lose!
