Summoner Spells Back to Top

I typically run 6.png14.png because I tend to use both of them around the same time. Their cds sync so when one is up; the other about to refresh, if not already.

6.png

I run ghost most of the time because it allows me to move around in a team fight much more efficiently. You can pop ghost and ult then run into the middle of the enemy's group using your raged enchanted E following up with 3143_32.png. if you can pull this off; their team will be hurting.

14.png

Ignite + your ultimate = A lot of non-armor damage.

4.png

I really don't like running flash on Renekton since his E is pretty much a flash. It can be useful vs comps that requires you to blink in a team fight (J4 ults or Anivia walls). Take it if you're more comfortable with it or if you're Wickd.

12.png

I pick this up if I'm not planning on trying to kill my lane opponent. It's also good to pick this up if you're laning vs Shen or if they have TF. If they don't have globals; you can use this to dominate dragon control.

3.png

I don't really like exhaust at all but I've it's still strong as hell vs Akali and Rumble. If you really like this summoner spell for some reason, you can take it instead of ignite.

I'm not sure which champion wouldn't need to max their Ulti first (ap Sion?) but if you didn't know, maxing out your R is usually the best thing you can do. Renekton's ult is amazing. It gives you more resources (fury), gives you magic damage per second, and a insta-health bonus. Tip; your ult syngergizes with your passive amazingly when you hit below half hp because it increases your fury gain by 50%. That means you will build up 50 fury in less than 3 seconds with your ulti, aa's, and spells that weren't rage induced.

Always max out your Q first because of the sustain it gives you. It can give you instantly 150+ hp if you have it enraged and it hits their top laner (this is harder to perform vs ranged that can kite). Minions alone give you about 100 hp. Also your Q is awesome for picking up fury, each target it hits gives you 5 fury points.

Max W last because this skill doesn't need the points for it to be effective.

Maxing out E after your Q allows you to move more in a fight and do more AoE damage in mid game team fights and objective securing.

Starting skill should be W for invades. Q for easy lane. E for hard lane. Do not take a point until you're 100% sure what your team is doing.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Armor 5 pot is a typical start vs ad bruisers top (Riven, Darius, Lee, ect).
Rejuv bead, 1 ward, 5 pots. Optimal farm lane start, good vs tough-to-kill opponents (malphite, singed, vlad).
Excellent if you're playing against skill shot champions or champions you're trying to keep away from.
Good sustain if you're not afraid of jungle ganks.
Fort pot + hp potions used to be awesome when you could get 6 hp pots instead of 3. the price increase on fort pot makes it riskier for first buy.

Core Items

    VS AD BRUISER
    VS HEAVY MAGIC DAMAGE
    VS ELISE
WHAT DORANS AND WHY? GO DORANS BLADE IF YOU'RE TRYING TO GO BALLS DEEP AND WIN LANE. GO DORAN'S SHIELD IF YOU ARE GETTING AA POKED TO DEATH. only get one or the other.

Situational Items

Vs. armor and heavy auto attackers.
Vs. high CC and/or heavy magic damage.
If they have Tons of slows or if you're snowballing, pick these up.
Increases early game damage tremendously and scales decently alone through out the game. Usually built vs ad bruisers.
Awesome vs Singed, Rumble, and pretty much any magic heavy tops. Do not build this into Maw.
Fantastic item, I build this usually every game. It scales amazingly with your ult and helps lane pushing.
Good if your team is ad stacked or have mf. Works well with enraged E for mega armor shredding.
    Excellent vs. bursty magic damage
Luxury item. If you have 3.2k to sink, this is your go to item.
Excellent vs. magic damage. Increases lane sustain too.
Vs. armor stacking. this item should be your 4-5th buy depending on your situation. 4th if you're ahead. 5th if you're behind.
end game vs. ad heavy team
    end game VS. Heavy ap
    End game dedicated tank
    End Game Balanced build

My guide is more about being a tank than trying to crank out huge dps. Renekton benefits tankiness because his damage can be found else where i.e. your sunfire cape and causes 155 dps damage unmitigated. So say it takes about 3.5 - 4.0 seconds to get your W, aa, Q, E, aa, E off. With your ulti up; you just added on about 300+ damage from simply standing there. So the longer you stand near them; the more damage they're going to take, forcing them to fight you.

Here's my thoughts on the items I typically buy:

3143_64.png - One of the strongest items in the game. The active is extremely strong in team fights and the passive is awesome when fighting vs. AD bruisers and auto attackers. This item helps you preventing from getting kited. I find myself building this item quite often.

3068_64.png - Everything about this item is great for Renekton. Even though it's not optimal; you can build this early vs. ap top and still do okay because of its amazing passive. The passive from this + your ult + ignite = huge amounts of non-physical damage. People underestimate the power of this item.

3107_64.png - This item is a lot more useful vs Elise then what I previously thought. The magic resist, health, and mr is awesome vs Elise's poke. I also tend to rush this if our team is trying to group early or if I'm trying to roam.

3035_64.png - Last Whisper is a very solid item on Renekton. If the enemy is stacking armor you can easily shred it away with enraged E and this item. Even if they're not stacking armor; this item's flat damage is still pretty nice. Grabbing a 1037_32.png around mid game will make up for lack of ad damage items if you didn't build a brutalizer or hexdrinker.

3260_32.png3265_32.png3280_32.png - Your boot upgrade should be based off of your current situation. If you're against Jax, Fiora, Irelia, Darius, Lee Sin, ect ect people who use aa and ad, you build ninja tabi. If they lack cc and their ad carry is fed; don't be scared to build ninja tabi later in the laning phase against ap tops, the reduced damage helps tremendously when you're trying to lockdown their adc.

3083_64.png - Warmogs has fallen out of favor on champions that doesn't scale directly from hp. This includes Renekton, Lee Sin, Darius, and Elise. The item can still be built and you become mega tanky; this item can be countered by botrk or simply because you do no damage in fights. I usually work towards a warmogs near end game if I'm going to build one.

3071_64.png - This item is more for the team than it is for you. If your team is stacking mega ad, make sure you tell them that you will build the black cleaver; because with enraged E, you can shred pretty much 50% of their armor with two strokes. It's decent to build last if you made a brutalizer.

3065_64.png - I don't see  a lot of Renektons building this, because it's sorta meh. I think it's a really good item on him in long farming/split pushing situations; it increases your healing from your Q and any regeneration, including hp pots. I build this vs. Vladimir and Singed when it's just a huge farm fest.

3134_64.png - Brutalizer is just brutalizer. More pew pew for 1337g. Build this whenever you're stomping lane or they have an ad bruiser. This item can stay in your inventory for a long part of your game. I usually hock it for a Last Whisper if I'm going super tanky. If you're building into a Black Cleaver; wait until your team starts to team fight before you build it in.

3155_64.png - Recently I've been enjoying this item more vs Elise when paired with Bulwark rush.

3139_64.png - Not bad as a final item. The active will further increase your threat in team fights with more ad and a cleanse that boosts you. I sell off my Hexdrinker for this (after I have enough money to sell hexdrinker than immediately buy this item).

3072_64.png - WHY CAN'T I HOLD ALL THIS MONEY? Seriously though if you go back with 3.2k you can probably sink your money into this because you're more than likely snowballing. Do NOT get this with black cleaver because that is way too much money for very little tank stats. You're a useless crocodile if you let Steve Irwin kill you.

VS

Akali

Easy

Akali can't fight Renekton 1v1 unless you're dumb enough to fight her in her shroud. Even then she is still taking ticks from your ultimate. Be careful though; this lane can turn you on your head if their jungler camps you.

VS

Cho'Gath

Easy

Cho'Gath is the master of farmers. Start rejuv bead and consumables and just raise some hay. You can kill Cho early if he isn't big but he can still turn the tables if you mess up. It's safer just to farm.

VS

Darius

Medium

You beat him 1v1 every time but if you make a mistake after he's level 6 he can start punishing you hard for it. Killing him before lvl 6 will make the laning phase completely in your favor.

VS

Diana

Hard

She is absolutely terror vs Renekton. Her shield absorbs your combo and out damages your auto attacks with her passive and Q. The lane is even as long as your mechanics are good and you're not making mistakes. If Diana gets one kill on you and she gets an early Seeker's Arm-guard, you're going to have a bad time.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Easy

I haven't seen Mundo top since Season 2. Until I played against one in ranked about a month back. His ultimate is annoying but if you just let it tick out, his defenses are completely down.

VS

Elise

Hard

She can kite, she can trade, and she can poke. Also she has personal minions, Max hp% dmg, Missing hp% execute, and a awesome escape/initiator. The lane will be annoying if you allow her to poke you to much so your best bet is to dorans blade/shield for early lane sustain. After that going negatron will help with her spell pen that she WILL stack. I round up with a Randuin's because it reduces her attack speed (which is pretty effective vs her). The doran's shield is also good vs her because of her insane W steroid in spider form, knocking off 6 damage per aa adds up.

VS

Evelynn

Easy

If your mid lane doesn't let Eve roam all over him/herself and you keep your lane nice and pushed; you shouldn't have a problem with her.

VS

Ezreal

Medium

Very annoying to play against since you can never quite reach him. He can't really kill you though unless you take too much poke damage. If your jungler camps him though, he will have a super rough time trying to catch up in cs. Expect an adc top like this if they an Urgot for some reason.

VS

Fiora

Medium

Actually tougher than what you may think. Her riposte blocks the first attack on your W which mitigates a good amount of damage. She can win small trades with her passive and lifesteal so try to force her into fighting in your minions. Be aware, their jungler will try to likely camp you to snowball Fiora.

VS

Fizz

Easy

He can't kill you unless you completely mess up or get ganked. It's rough to try to kill him on your own but with a gank; you can easily keep him locked long enough to take deadly amounts of damage.

VS

Galio

Easy

A farm lane. You can't engage him because your ult will heal him through his W. He can't kill you though without a gank.

VS

Gangplank

Easy

He can eat all the oranges he wants but when a Crocodile sticks to him like Renekton does, he cannot do nothing but run back to his tower. Expect him to just farm it out and use his ult to assist his allies globally.

VS

Garen

Medium

It's a hard medium; if that makes any sense. A skilled Garen player will know how to zone you out with his Q and spin. If Garen engages on you, just run back until his Q goes off. If you cannot out run him before he reaches you, make sure you active your W BEFORE you're silenced so you can just E away once the silence wears off. Focus on farming and you'll outscale him late game.

VS

Gragas

Easy

Gragas will just chug alcoholic beverages and throw them at your minions. I don't know why someone would be playing Gragas top honestly.

VS

Graves

Easy

He's a pretty weak ad top vs Renekton. Graves' dash is just a little bit further, if not the same, length as Renekton's E. He gets one but you get two, and you have a stun.

VS

Hecarim

Easy

Hecarim top tends to just push the hell out of your lane and then go roam. If your mid is good at surviving ganks, you can just sit happily under tower free farming.

VS

Heimerdinger

Easy

Just don't get kited around the turrets like a scrub.

VS

Irelia

Medium

The key to winning this match up is dominating the lane pre 9. After lvl 9 and some attack speed, Irelia can peel you down fast if you do not have a gold/item advantage on her. If you build an sunfire cape and wardens mail, you can fight her 1v1 after lvl 9 (if she's not snowballing and super fed of course). Try to get your jungler to coordinate a early gank, if you are able to land a successful gank; you can start controlling your lane from then on.

VS

Jarvan IV

Easy

This lane can only go bad if you let it go bad. J4 can't duel Renekton unless he somehow starts snowballing. You can also jump out of his arena with one E. HIs armor shred wont affect you too much if you build early hp. Sunfire cape should do the trick.

VS

Jax

Easy

Jax has fallen off lately since larger hp pools are more favored over high resistance stats. Your stun is superior over his stun in a duel, so you can just stun him before he even has a chance to reactivate it. The only way he can stun you is if he activates it before he jumps in, then jumps in. If Jax does that you can just stun him, aa, q, aa, e, aa, e, ect ect. He will take way more punishment than you especially if he jumped on you in a creep wave.

VS

Jayce

Medium

Jayce can chunk Renekton pretty hard if you don't build a decent amount of armor. I usually rush a randuins vs Jayce because of the slow utility it brings, this helps keep him locked down for fights. Avoid his poke and wait for him to make mistakes and you can take control of the lane.

VS

Karthus

Medium

I'll be honest, I have no real confirmed knowledge about playing vs Karthus. I would imagine he would just farm like crazy and use his ult to farm kills/assists. If you can try to stun his ult. If he walls you, just E away to avoid unnecessary chunks.

VS

Katarina

Easy

She can't get close to you while you have your stun up. Just preserve your stun and wait for her to get impatient enough to ult. If she jumps and ults on top of you, interrupt it and punish her. Don't let her roam on your mid and watch out for ganks.

VS

Kayle

Hard

Kayle will harass you with Q + E. AP Kayle is the more popular and more effective Kayle so it will likely be an AP Kayle you'll be facing with in lane. Her heal/speed up, slow, wave clear, and ulti makes her really hard to push out of lane.

If they're AD/Hybrid Kayle, there's not much to worry about as they will not do any damage.

VS

Kennen

Medium

Kennen top at the moment can be played ap, ad, or hybrid ap. AP Kennen is likely going to land Qs on you and follow up with W to poke you down, then rushing in with ulti/ignite to finish you. AD/Hybrid ap will poke you with auto attacks and maxed Ws to chip you down to a point all they have to do is rush in with e, ult, and aa you to death. Really just avoid poke from Kennen and force trades if his abilities are down.

VS

Kha'Zix

Easy

He's easy sauce if he doesn't get fed. Make sure he doesn't roam and have plenty of armor. Playing aggressive early is key to securing lane control, do this by bullying him away from minions and force him to farm with his spikes. Watch out for ganks.

VS

Lee Sin

Hard

So damn annoying. I love Lee Sin, one of my favorite champions, but I sure hate playing against him. His kit just counters Renekton's kit so hard. He has better natural damage, a really far reliable jump, a knock back, and a attack speed debuff. Do not let him get close to you and do NOT let him land his q on you. He will harass you down that way.

VS

Lulu

Medium

She's very meh in top lane since season 2. She can still kite you and all that good stuff but if you get one single kill against her, she has completely lost her lane as you can snowball off that one kill. Your ultimate > her ultimate in 1v1s just remember that. Try to get your jungler to camp her to really shut up her down.

VS

Malphite

Medium

Boring farm lane is boring, only this time Malphite can bring the heat to you if he harasses you enough. But if you play smart and rush a Sunfire cape; you can  win 1v1 fights around lvl 9. Some Malphites  just farm for 20 minutes; only using their ult as an escape, making it hard to kill him.

VS

Mordekaiser

Easy

A Mordekaiser who isn't snowballing is a useless Mordekaiser. Make sure you never die to him and that you cs well. Have your jungler gank often because the lane will be pushed to your tower.

VS

Nasus

Medium

You beat him early; he beats you late. Play aggressive early and keep pressure on him, preventing Q farm. Try to hit 6 before he does and go one him so you can have the pure advantage on him. You will lose 1v1s to him around lvl 11.

VS

Nidalee

Easy

Dodge spears, avoid poke. Basic mechanics. She's a lot easier to kill since they removed the extra armor/mr off her cougar form.

VS

Nocturne

Easy

He's going to push the lane whether he likes it or not because of his passive. Have jungler camp, but not required because you can beast mode all over Nocturne in fights.

VS

Nunu

Hard

sOAZ is evil for playing Nunu top. Now everyone and their mother is playing Nunu top and it's really, really annoying. Nunu can smack you around with snowballs for free and restore any lost health in trades with his consume. The only thing you have on him is that you can stun out his ulti but really he doesn't even need to use it to make his laning power op.

VS

Olaf

Easy

He has a good ability to run away from you. That's about it. His true damage in minuscule once you start building up hp.

VS

Pantheon

Medium

His shield is irritating when you're trying to trade with him. A good Pantheon will chain his shields to where you would get only 1 auto attack through. His shield can also block the first hit from your W. The main headache about this lane is that you can go even with him but he can jump from base to snowball off other lanes.

VS

Poppy

Easy

Never dive her, keep her away from last hits. Once she's starved of cs her damage will be nothing vs. a sunfire cape. It's a farm lane pretty much but you will be doing mostly zoning while farming.

VS

Renekton

Medium

Just outplay him with your knowledge of Renekton.

VS

Rengar

Easy

His damage is laughable after riot nerfed him awhile back. If you're playing against Rengar just go hard on him constantly because he can't handle the trades. Build a pinch of mr, usually merc treds, to reduce his healing and damage from other abilities.

VS

Riven

Medium

If Riven snowballs it's all over for you. Play it aggressive pre 6, try to hit 6 before her to win a early fight. After lvl 6 never fight her head on because she will win the trades and possibly kill you. Randuins is very effective against her.

VS

Rumble

Hard

Not SUPER hard but it can be challenging because Rumble fights your spammable with his semi-spammable spells. If you engage on Rumble all he has to do is hit you with 1 E to chase you off with his flamethrower. Build a early hexdrinker. If you get the lead; don't push it too hard because Rumble is good at recovering from bad lanes.

VS

Ryze

Medium

Ryze can kite you pretty well but is very vulnerable to early ganks and cs denial. Shove your lane or bait out ganks, your choice.

VS

Shen

Medium

Shen is a lane beast. His trades are backed by constant shield spamming and q spam, which ticks hp over 3 seconds. His taunt also reduces damage output from the taunted person by 50%; a lot of damage would be lost if a Shen taunted you while you had W activated. Playing too aggressive is what Shen would want you to do so do what you can to take out his tower or follow his global with teleport.

VS

Singed

Medium

Farmville. You push his wave, he pushes your wave. Neither of you can kill each other until they make a big mistake.

VS

Swain

Easy

Don't eat too many crows if he has a ton of mana. Best to engage him after you pushed a couple of waves into his tower; causing him to lose mana or last hits.

VS

Talon

Easy

Get sunfire cape and talon's damage will be easily shrugged off. Super aggressive kill mode in this lane.

VS

Teemo

Hard

Riot one day said "Let's put Satan into the game" the next day Teemo was created. He's considered hard because after level 6 you can NEVER kill a Teemo. If you don't get a kill before level 6, you better get used to farming at tower forever. If a Teemo is bad at positioning however, this match up is much, much easier.

VS

Tryndamere

Easy

Even when ap Tryn was mega popular, I was never scared of him. People just didn't know how to deal with his heals properly. You just wait he uses his heal then you engage on him. You couldn't quite ever kill him but you can force him away from creeps.

VS

Udyr

Hard

You won't be able to out trade Udyr before lvl 7 because of tiger stance. The magic damage and ad damage is tricky to deal with early. I suggest going randuins first to reduce his attack speed and movement speed. You can deal with Udyr you just have to never let him get in your face.

VS

Urgot

Easy

Avoid his grenade and you're fine.

VS

Vayne

Hard

Vayne will kite you around top lane all day if she wanted to. You can never get close enough to kill her because of tumble and condemn. She can out roll your first e and blast you back with condemn for your second. Her range poke in lane is very tedious because you lose 20% of your hp off of 3 auto attacks. Best way to win this lane is to rush randuins and brutalizer and have your jungler camp top.

VS

Vi

Medium

Vi can't 1v1 you because of your Q heal and stun, giving you more opportunities to get more damage off. Vi's damage isn't that massive until you let her get 6-8 aa's off. However; if their jungler camps top lane, you will find it very annoying to lane because of Vi's gap closers. A Nautilus camped me when I was laning vs Vi and I found that I could barely leave my tower range because of the huge chain CC and the eventual percent damage Vi does to you. Rushing 3143_32.png is an excellent choice here because of how hard this counters her.

VS

Vladimir

Easy

Pretty easy, his late game is pretty strong but his laning phase is all about his sustain. You can outfarm him or if he takes enough trade damage; you can straight out kill him 1v1. The best time to go in for trades is when Vlad uses his Q.

VS

Warwick

Easy

Warwick is so bleh now. Randuins destroys him completely. If he went ap ww, just go hexdrinker then a Randuins.

VS

Wukong

Easy

The monkey can juke your W out but that's pretty much all he has vs Renekton. His armor crush is kinda strong vs you but early hp will solve that problem. Doran's shield is very good vs him.

VS

Xin Zhao

Hard

He spits out more damage than you and heals for more than you. He can jump to you whenever you want and force trades; which will usually end up in his favor. Early 3082_32.png helps tremendously when trying to fight him 1v1 early.

VS

Yorick

Medium

Paired with sunfire cape; your ult will quickly kill minions that Yorick summons. This will cause Yorick to be unable to benefit from his passive. If he gets fed you will have difficulty in trying to kill him, he however; should not be able to kill you 1v1 no matter how fed he his, you should be able to escape him alive.

VS

Zed

Easy

Zed can be easily chased around by using your E to follow him after he tries to W away. If he ults on you, immediately ult so you can mitigate some upcoming damage and gain fury. If he's on top of you stun him, aa, q, then walk away and dodge shurikens.

I'll link Renekton plays here.

I messed up my auto attacks near the end (bad mechanics op).

Part of a montage I made; I get 3 kills vs people who won't group in their own jungle.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Reworked Example builds to fit around 3107_32.png.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Swapped 3068_32.png out for 3107_32.png on 'Dedicated Tank' example build in the items section because I feel you would be wanting to group more with your team being the only heavy tank.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Removed 3190_32.png because it became lack luster. Supports tend to pick this up more often because either the jungler or top would pick up an 3105_32.png/3107_32.png.
