Summoner Spells Back to Top

Rengar Top you want 4.png in most scenarios, 6.png is also viable but I wouldn't recommend it unless you are doing a cheesy Stormraiders + Ghost speed build.

Also for Rengar top you want either 12.png, 3.png, or 14.png

I go Teleport in most matchups and in matchups where I'm afraid I might die or need extra 1v1ing pressure I would take Exhaust. Ignite I would only take if I was going up against a Mundo or someone that I might need healing reduction against, but even then I would probably go TP and buy 3123.png

Rengar Jungle you always take 11.pngand again, unless you are being cheesy I would take 4.pngover6.png

PS: With TP you can teleport from a bush to a minion or something that isn't in a bush and instantly jump to someone if you click on them immediately

With that being said, Let's move on to Runes.

Masteries Back to Top

The First set of Masteries is the setup I use for Rengar Jungle. Thunderlords feels much stronger in the jungle to me and the extra burst it gives early - mid makes him a viable threat. If you are confident in your hunting skills I recommend trying out Stormraiders, as it gives you more auto attacks and lets you reposition more. Seasoned rengar players generally prefer Stormraiders, if you want to see it in use check out twitch.tv/dekar173 and if you want to see thunderlords being used check out twitch.tv/scrubnooblol

For toplane I prefer Stormraiders to, as I said in the jungling section, get more auto attacks in and reposition myself better.

This is your setup evey game, regardless of the lane you are playing Rengar in.

Rengar's Passive - Unseen Predator - This is Rengar's most useful tool in the top lane and a vital tool in the jungle. It allows for brush play top lane and surprise lane ganks and invades. This ability also charges 1 Ferocity stack when you first jump while being out of combat. The bonetooth necklace portion of Rengar's passive allows him to snowball as hard as some of the top assassins in the game, however, if he falls behind he can't catch up nearly as easy as other assassins.

rengarq.png- Savagery - This is Rengar's bread and butter ability. It does the most damage, and is on the lowest cooldown, it is the ability that gave Rengar the clear that made him disgusting to play against (along with his W, of course). It can be used as a pseudo-auto attack reset which allows rengar's turret taking to be surprisingly strong. A normal combo level 1 as rengar top is jump on enemy -> q -> aa -> run back to bush -> jump again -> q -> aa -> with Stormraiders run away back to bushes. This combo also gives him 3 stacks of ferocity which means you can often blow a summoner spell or get a kill level 1 - 2 by csing and jump -> q -> aa -> fero q -> aa -> stormraiders chasing. This ability can also be used to Q -> Flash for surprise burst to finish someone off. In the jungle it allows you to take raptors level 1 instead of a buff and if you want to be cheesy you can steal the two small wolves in the enemy jungle when top lane and get a XP advantage. Dekar (linked earlier) does this often.

rengarw.png- Batlle Roar - The ability that broke Rengar. Maybe the worst designed ability for an assassin ever, it promotes waiting to use it, delaying your much needed ferocity ability and instead wait to be bursted and then W -> Emp W and heal to full HP. However, it serves a purpose. This ability allows him to clear the jungle fairly well and makes Bruiser Rengar extremely strong. In the top lane I suggest in unfavorably matchups getting 3 stacks of ferocity up with w already up and jumping on them, Qing, taking the burst and then double Wing the damage. Note: you CAN heal off turret shots UNLESS IT IS THE BASE TOWER. Trust me, I've tried.

rengare.png- Bola Strike - Fairly simple. Use this to slow people chasing you, use it to slow people you are chasing and just all around catch people out. The empowered version allows you to root them which is usually what you use when ganking as Rengar to secure the kill unless you can just one shot them with emp q. This ability in the top lane allows you to slow your enemy while procing SS yourself and running away.

rengarr.png- Thrill of the Hunt - Ahh, Thrill of the hunt. Rengar's tool to catch people out while notifying them from 2 screens away. Still usable, just slightly annoying. This ability in the Jungle is simple to use, you use it to gank a lane by getting somewhere behinmd them, ulting and hopping on them and feasting on the corpse. Or just leaving, that works too. In the top lane this is harder to use. I use it to tower dive with my jungler, solo (if I can one shot them/ they are low) or, most commonly, roaming mid/bot and using TP to get back to lane.

VS

Aatrox

Easy

Abuse him early. Once his passive is stacked up back off and try not to fight him, especially when it gives him a revive. Post 6 he may be able to kill you if you miss-play but otherwise you should be fine by baiting his ult and running with emp w and stormraiders.

VS

Akali

Easy

Kill her early, build a maw early/spirit visage and be careful of her level 6. TP/Exhaust recommended

VS

Camille

Medium

Try to bait out her E and jump to a minion to dodge it. Try to do trades like this: Jump>mid air E>Q>wait for an attack>W>empW>run with passive speed and stormraiders. If she jumps on you try to e>q>w>aa and proc stormraiders before running away and reengaging once she has cooldowns.

VS

Cho'Gath

Medium

Be careful of his Ult damage, however you can heal off of it. Maw/Spirit Visage early if losing, otherwise try to kill him early and abuse him with your speed and mobility.

VS

Darius

Hard

Similar to Cho'Gath be careful of his ult but you can heal off of it. Early Tabis recommended. If you get an early lead don't get cocky, his level 6 is extremely strong and much stronger than yours. He can cancel your Jump with his E if he is good. Be careful of 1v1ing level 1 if he has Stormraiders/Ignite, this most likely means he will try to start W and cheese a first blood. Dorans Shield start recommended if you are not confident with TP/Exhaust. Go for short trades.

VS

Diana

Easy

Fuck her up. Her level 6 is sort of scary but otherwise you should be fine. Take exhaust if you are worried. Not particularly difficult.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Easy

Ignite if you are anti-executioners calling for some reason. If you aren't, an early executioners shits on him. Be careful of his Q E damage, it can surprise you. Fairly simple, abuse your speed.

VS

Ekko

Medium

Early Maw/Spirit Visage. If he kills you early play as safe as possible, he can one shot you. You can root him to stop him from ulting, and win fights early if you play it properly. Abuse your speed and try to jump away from him to minions when he E's. You can double W his burst and heal it back if he all ins and runs. Exhaust if worried.

VS

Fiora

Hard

Tricky. Early you can kill her but once she gets level 6 she can fuck you up easily. Exhaust if you are worried. You can walk out of her vision to reset vitals if they are not good for you, you usually want vitals behind you or pointing towards the brush because thats where you will spend most your time. be careful about your EMP E as she can Riposte it and CC you. Lethality may be stronger in this match up if you want to stomp her as hard as possible and one shot her over and over again, bruiser to be conservative. TP most of the time.

VS

Fizz

Medium

Meh. Be careful of his fish when he is 6, try to jump away from him when he E's and when he activates his W you will get bursted. Exhaust if worried, otherwise TP.

VS

Galio

Easy

He can't kill you, but you can't usually kill him. Early you can kill him but otherwise you should take tp, try to roam at 6 with an XP lead so he can't follow and just try to help your team. Bruiser recommended.

VS

Gangplank

Easy

Jump to his barrels, W his poke and burst him down whenever you like. He can't 1v1 you particularly well. Any sum (TP/EXH/IG)

VS

Garen

Easy

Try to abuse your movement and speed by doing short trades and jump away from him when he Q's and runs towards you and when he e's. Careful of you roaming and becoming his villain and getting one shot by his full combo, his ult can do upwards of 1k true damage (which you can hypothetically heal back). I haven't played in this matchup when he has his new W and passive, but I assume it's the same.

VS

Gnar

Easy

You hop he hops, still not too hard. Take TP, Jump on him early, be a dick and abuse movement. Be careful of him getting you in a lock where he just aa aa q aa aa q aa aa q and procs his W over and over, that is how you die. That and getting ulted level 6, watch his rage bar and when he gets close be careful as you are always near a wall while in the bush.

VS

Gragas

Easy

Meh. He can cancel your jump with his e but thats mostly it. If he's tank try to kill him early - mid and roam. If he's AP be more careful and try not to get Ult -> barrel combo'd under his tower and die. Usually an easy matchup.

VS

Heimerdinger

Medium

Annoying, yet doable. If you rush alot of hp/mr he cant do much. hope for ganks, kill his turrets when you can and try to burst. BE CAREFUL OF ULT Q UNDER TOWER, it surprises people every time. You can cleanse his E but still be careful of his turrret and W burst.

VS

Illaoi

Medium

For an inexperienced Rengar a formidable foe, for an experienced Rengar...a formidable foe. An irritating lane but you can still beat her. Try to jump on her, proc SS and dodge her Q/E/Tentacles. When she is 6, all in her and bait her ult then jump away/just run. Roam often and use TP.

VS

Irelia

Medium

Early levels you can win, but once she has 6 she can 1v1 you. You can get 3 stacks, Jump -> q -> EMP W her E and finish trading before running away, repeat while her E is down. Take TP and try to roam once she can 1v1 you and win.

VS

Jarvan IV

Hard

Difficult lane. His Q can poke hard, he can all in you well and his short trades are strong. But you can overcome this. You watched the Ryan Choi montage. You jerked off to Dekar's ASMR, and you studied the salt of r/rengarmains. When you jump on him try to have 3 stacks before hand. He will burst you hard but you can double W and win the trade. If you are inexperienced take TP and roam once 6, be careful of his burst. If you are experienced I'd take TP or EXH and try to kill him early.

VS

Jax

Medium

Not too bad. Try to bait his E and jump away from him. Once it is on CD re engage and fuck his day up. When he is 6 try to bait his ult and be careful of his AA AA Q onto you aa W for quick burst and then e as he runs away. That can be difficult to battle but early you can kill him. TP recommended, and R O A M.

VS

Jayce

Hard

Bad matchup. Hard burst, but decent sustained damage. He can burst you with an E Q and auto you to fuck your day up while going hammer and Eing you away when you try to engage. Dorans shield is good in this matchup. Be careful, take TP and DEFINITELY roam. I've heard some Rengar mains say this matchup is actually favorable for him but in my experience it is difficult.

VS

Kayle

Easy

Easy matchup. She can't fight you, you can most definitely fight her. Try for a kill early and often until 6 ish where she can ult herself and sometimes win the fight. Once she is 6 you can attempt to bait it out and run and later kill her yourself. TP/EXH, doesn't matter too much

VS

Kayn

Easy

I don't have much experience with this matchup, but it seems simple. Jump on him, dodge his W, easy money.

VS

Kennen

Medium

Decent matchup. I used to think this matchup was very hard, but having more experience makes me feel it's actually 55/45 in kennen's favor. If he can play properly, drag minions from bush, play safe, and wait until six while rushing zhonyas you get usually destroyed. But, if you can mess him up early game, jump on him, get a cheesy kill it can snowball in your favor extremely quickly. If you are ahead by a bit but still worried about his ult, jump to a minion, Q towards bush (not hitting much of anything) so you have two ferocity stacks and then jump on him, Q E (mid air E) and wait until burst/stun to double w and run away. This is a good strategy for any top laner with CC you are afraid of (i.e renekton, jax, irelia)

VS

Kled

Medium

I wish there was a medium-hard category. A good kled can mess you up, utilizing his passive and playing well. A bad kled is freelo. Try to kill him early but dont get your hopes up as he can disengage with this Q and stack his courage up at the same time. TP, Roam (but try to roam when he isn't 6 as he can follow fairly well).

VS

Malphite

Medium

Annoying, after his first real back (AKA not a death) he can usually hold his own if not 1v1 you. Be careful of his damage, nobody expects it. Early you can mess him up but his E and Q stop you from finishing him often. Roam.

VS

Maokai

Hard

I don't have much experience but this seems hypothetically very very difficult. His E can mess you up and you are usually in a bush so that does not help at all. When coming back to lane be careful of the bushes as they could be trapped for you to be one shot.

VS

Mordekaiser

Medium

Odd match up. Abuse your mobility and speed as much as possible, don't let him get his Q's on you.

VS

Nautilus

Medium

Usually easy but can be tricky at times. Early you can kill him, later you cannot. Similar to malphite.

VS

Olaf

Medium

Odd. You can get solod but you have the upper hand if you just dodge his Q's.

VS

Pantheon

Hard

One of the hardest. Blocks your jump damage and pokes you a shit load. Take dorans shield, get TP, farm till 6 and make sure you have lube on hand. Only issue is you he can also roam with his ult. You are usually fucked.

VS

Poppy

Easy

Her W can block your jump - Oh no! Well, sort of. It blocks it but you can just jump right after. If you run out of her Q you usually win until she gets decent amounts of armor.

VS

Quinn

Hard

Eh. She can jump away from you, blind you, be an annoyance. Careful of her roams, take TP, get dorans shield, be careful.

VS

Renekton

Hard

Ew. You can win if you do trades where you Emp W his W and then w the rest of his burst and short trade him. Good renektons can fuck you up but you can fuck him right back. Be careful of level 1 if he started W.

VS

Riven

Medium

A fun one. Well, sort of. You can mess her up but be careful of her fervor aa q damage level 1. If you proc stormraiders you can out run her and jump to a minion and mess her up from there while her Q is on CD but don't bet on it. Very skill based and at Level 6 she has a massive advantage. Exhaust for cheesy kills, TP for safety.

VS

Rumble

Easy

Mess him up. Jump , Q , aa , Jump , Q , aa. Not too hard just dodge his E's and run away from his R.

VS

Ryze

Easy

Good Ryzes can mess you up but those are few and far between. Usually you can mess him up without too much of an issue, just try to save EMP ability ~Level 3+ for his W.

VS

Shen

Easy

He can sometimes win lane but usually you win by just being faster. Don't get taunted under turret. Try to EMP E him when he ults, if you can.

VS

Singed

Medium

Eh. Easy all the way to Hard. Bad singed - Easy, you just jump on him and win trades. Good singed - Good luck chasing that asshole, you lose. Sit in bush near krugs or the bush next to blue to check for proxy.

VS

Sion

Medium

Meh. His base damages are high so be careful of a Tilterella type cheese and look out for his passive. You are far more mobile and you can cleanse his CC/Slow. Sit in your red/blue bush to make sure he doesnt steal it.

VS

Swain

Hard

Very difficult. He can poke you, out damage you, root you when you jump on him. Not a fun time, early maw/spirit visage recommended.

VS

Tahm Kench

Medium

Rare to see one nowadays but still common enough for me to make this. Careful of his burst or surprise tankiness of his E and try to kill him early. Roam.

VS

Teemo

Medium

Not as bad as it might be. Post 6 the bushes will be a land of hell because of his shrooms, but pre 6 try to jump on him -> get the dart -> run -> reengage and fuck him up and heal with W. Early MAW/Spirit Visage if he is AP. If not, normal bruiser.

VS

Trundle

Easy

You out run him early if you can short trade with stormraiders, be careful of his ult/pillar. If he pillars you while in the bush try to jump to a minion away from him and the pillar. If he ults you disengage completely and wait for it to wear off.

VS

Tryndamere

Hard

Meh. If he plays it right you lose but if they are a bad tryndamere you can win this matchup HARD. Try not to get dove while he has ult or killed.

VS

Urgot

Medium

Meduim-Hard matchup IMO. If you can proc stormraiders properly after going in on him and double W out you are golden, however, if you go and and your burst is blocked by his W shield or he has too much armor and you get caught with no stormraiders, he can E, Q, W, and just mess you up. I would recommend taking TP in this matchup and playing it safe until you either get a gank or playing it safe until you can TP gank and roam with ultimate.

VS

Volibear

Medium

Be careful of his W burst and his chase with E  and Q. Try to proc his passive early and then fuck him up after. An early executioners or ignite is good.

VS

Warwick

Medium

Weird. Try to save your W for his E/R. If he fears you while he has ult, W and run horizontal to him so he can't bait your emp W and ult you. His healing is crazy, ignite or executioners 100%. His Q does a shit load of damage, be careful.

VS

Wukong

Easy

You out damage him. Jump on him, walk away, repeat. Bait his clone and all in.

VS

Xin Zhao

Medium

Real annoying. He can out damage you, out burst, out sustain. If you get a kill on him early you can snowball and roam hard. Otherwise try not to die and roam.

VS

Yasuo

Medium

Oh, Yasuo, you bronze trap. Try to jump near him and if he Q's you W to heal AND proc his shield. After that jump on him, all in, stormraiders run away and jump to a minion. You can EMP W out of his Ult but otherwise try not to get solod.

VS

Yorick

Medium

He can trap you in his W, try not to get trapped. Dodge his E and heal his Q damage. You can 1v1 him early but later you usually can't. Try to Roam but make sure you have TP because yorick looooves splittin.

End Back to Top

Thank you for taking the time to read this guide, I hope it helps you in your future games. I know I'm not very high ELO but my smurf (Kian Jaden) is hovering around Plat 3 - 4 MMR at all times and I have ~650k mastery points on him over all of my accounts.

Again, Thank you, and keep hunting.
