Summoner Spells Back to Top

12.png4.png Teleport/Flash : If you choose to run this, you have to understand that you do not have as much kill pressure as you would had you picked 14.png4.png. You can split-push more frequently with this set, but only when your 12.png is off cooldown!

The new TP has a 4.5 second cast time, which seems absurdly long. This summoner spell still provides the most presence on the map, however. Riot can continue to nerf teleport, but it will almost certainly be my summoner spell of choice. :^)

14.png4.png Ignite/Flash : Extreme aggression in laning. You're going to have to roam a lot more to help out your team. Therefore, you need to smash your lane hard with this summoner spell set.

If you watch me play, I take 12.png4.png 90% of the time, just so I can assist my team so much more. I can get first blood easily without 14.png, so why not?

Exhaust is really good for duelists, and it's on a relatively short cooldown.

Masteries Back to Top

Season 6 masteries!

What fun.

12/18 is the best mastery configuration. The flat penetration in the Cunning tree is very strong, but if you want to have fun with 45% cdr Riven, be my guest. Please note that you can cancel your third Q (knockup) with your first Q if you time your Qs properly at 45% cdr. This is bad and you shouldn't do it, but it looks funny. :^)

Thunderlord's Decree gives you big burst, so it's a must-have.

Fervor isn't a bad idea if you are going to engage in constant sustained skirmishes. An example of a champion where you'd take fervor into is 48.png or 114.png.

All in all, it's your choice. Big burst and cdr versus sustained fights.

==EDIT==
Season 7 masteries are interesting. There are three very good keystone masteries: Courage of the Colossus in the 3rd tree, Stormraider's Surge and Thunderlord's Decree in the 2nd tree, and Fervor of Battle in the 1st tree. It is entirely up to you which you want. 45% cdr build is still good, but there are now better options available (namely Fervor or Colossus).

==EDIT 2==
It really depends on what you're looking for in your matchup. If you need to duel, take Fervor. If you need chase your opponent, take Stormraider's. If you cannot duel your opponent and can only afford small trades, take Thunderlords. Courage got nerfed too hard, so don't use it anymore.

The general path for skills for Riven is as follows: R > Q > E/W > (the other).

I cannot say for certain whether or not you should prioritize W or E, and you'll have to get a feel for that yourself.

For example, if I'm against a high poke champion such as 2_64.png or 13_64.png, I will max E before W. If I'm against a 157_64.png, I will max W before E to maximize damage output on him. (157_64.png is extremely item dependent, so you can punish him in the early game.)

It is also important to note that maxing Q will not reduce its cooldown, so it is viable to max E before Q in some matchups! Riven feels very different when you max E first on her, as your Q will do little to no damage, but your passive will still feel powerful. Consider rushing E against hard matchups to survive the laning phase.

Boxbox (twitch.tv/flosd) often maxes E>W>Q, because the cooldown on E and W will reduce with additional levels.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Standard start. This start allows for many errors, with health potions to sustain you through early brawls.
This is for lanes where the enemy can trade evenly with you with auto attacks or single-target spells. Some examples include Gnar and Quinn.
Aggressive start. Doran's Blade gives you early sustain as well as a bit of health.

Core Items

Armor penetration and cooldown reduction are must-haves on Riven.
Opt for one (or maybe even 2 lifesteal items).
Youmuu's isn't too bad in the late game anymore, because it finally has a decent amount of AD. However, flat armor penetration generally falls off late game, unless the enemy team is full of squishies.
Really good item against squishy targets. Also gives you a bit of health.
    example build
Early CDR and titanic really works well in this pseudo-tank meta. Don't forget about the auto reset on the titanic!

Situational Items

    General Defensive Items
    General useful consumables!
Heavy AP comps. Also, if you're against an AP laner, you can make them cry with this item. :^)
Not a bad item, but I don't really like it, as it is very expensive to rush.

I almost always start long sword with 3 health potions because I like to play aggressive early and try to force my enemies to either back or burn health potions of their own. Cooldown reduction and armor penetration are both very valuable resources for Riven, and I urge you to rush both of these stats as soon as possible.

For example:
If I had 875 gold with 1036_32.png and 1001_32.png in my inventory, I would obviously buy a 1037_32.png, right?

WRONG!
If I was against a very mobile target such as 150_64.png, I would want more cooldown reduction so I would be able to have my gap closers off cooldown sooner. In fact, I would have bought 3158_32.png with a couple of 2003_32.pngs.

VS

Aatrox

Medium

You have to play this lane somewhat carefully. His sustain is incredible, and even more so when he's below a certain percentage of health. He'll constantly try to poke you down with his E, so try to dodge it and then engage on him. Take 14.png for this lane if you feel the need to do so.

Overall difficulty: 5/10

Skill order: Q>E>W

VS

Ahri

Medium
edited after DFG removal patch:

Ahri is now very slippery with the movement speed gained from her Q. She still has decent burst, so try to avoid getting charmed and comboed. At 6, she is mobile, so try to aim your ultimate accordingly.

Overall difficulty: 4/10

Skill order: Q>E>W

VS

Akali

Medium
Akali will try to trade with you with Q + AA, so try to duel her before her Q is off cooldown again. Laning isn't too difficult against her otherwise. At 6, you two both get a huge power spike. Make sure to stun her before you use your Wind Slash, as she could easily dodge it with a strategic akalishadowdance.png.
Skill order: Q>E>W

Overall difficulty: 5/10

NOTE: If she gets snowballing from ganking other lanes, you might need to get a MR item such as  3155_32.png

VS

Alistar

Hard

Even post nerf, this mad cow will still trample all over you. It's extremely hard to engage on him, considering all of his CC. At level 6, his ultimate will turn your ultimate into a wet noodle. He can build extremely tanky while dishing out respectable damage and zoning you, so force him to trade with you, and not the other way around.

Skill order: Q>E>W

Overall difficulty: 8/10

VS

Amumu

Medium

I don't think I've played against a lane Amumu in some 100 games of normals. His E passive makes it so that your autos hurt less, so be wary of minion aggro as you auto attack him. Staying behind your minions makes it so that he cannot hit you with his Q. You'll find that a good Amumu player will shove the wave and back, and will stop pushing if he is trying to coordinate a gank with his jungler.

Skill order: Q>W>E

Overall difficulty: 3/10

VS

Anivia

Medium

Push her waves into her tower and watch her beg for last hits. Her auto attack animation is one of the slowest in the game, if not the slowest. Her Q is easy to dodge, so you shouldn't have any problems in lane against her. Keep track of her passive status!

At level 6, she will simply just wave-clear and be out of sight. If she gets sustain items and/or blue buff, you should just roam to other lanes.

Skill order: Q>E>W

Overall difficulty: 5/10

VS

Annie

Hard
Her auto attack range pokes you immensely, her stuns stop you in your tracks, and her burst is incredibly scary. Constantly check her passive status to make sure you won't get stunned. Buy wards as her CC and damage synergize well with a jungler's gank. Watch out for the Tibbers burst at level 6!

Skill order: Q>E>W

Overall difficulty: 7/10

VS

Ashe

Medium

If you are laning against Ashe in a solo lane, it's time to make a new account that isn't in Bronze V. Ashe is able to kite you quite well with her Q, W, and R, but it is quite easy to kill her once you are able to land on top of her.

TIP: Her ultimate stuns for very short at point blank range, so don't even bother using QSS if you don't require it to kill.

Skill order: uhh Q>E>W

Overall difficulty: uhh 4/10??

VS

Aurelion Sol

Hard
This champion is the epitome of bullshit. Dodging his stun can be very difficult at very close ranges, so play and cs with caution. It is also worthy to note that his poke is exceptionally annoying. Rush a 3155.png in this matchup to preserve your butthole.
Skill order: Q>E>W

Overall difficulty: 7/10

VS

Azir

Medium

Take advantage of the early game, as this is when Azir is the most vulnerable. Try your best to dodge his soldiers, and you should be fine to hard engage on Azir.

beware the late game chicken god

Skill order: Q>E>W

Overall difficulty: 5/10

VS

Brand

Medium
need to play this matchup more ugh

Brand has a lot of poke, and a lot of range. Your shield can shield the initial burst of his spells, but will leave you hanging with his dot. Force him to burn (ha) mana and then all in him.

TIP: He can only stun you if you're already ablaze, so use your minions to your advantage.

Skill order: Q>E>W

Overall difficulty: 5/10

VS

Cassiopeia

Medium

This matchup is all about reaction timing. If you can dodge her poisons, she will run out of mana quickly. You can literally win this lane by dodging skillshots. At 6, you guys both have powerful ultimates, but you can outplay 69_64.png by turning around when she uses her ultimate. (Once again, fast reaction timing)

Overall difficulty: 6/10

Skill order: Q>E>W
-- Q>E because you can dodge more skillshots or absorb damage if you lack confidence in your dodging skills. :^)

VS

Cho'Gath

Easy

It's simple: he outsustains you, you out-trade him. You should be able to bully him  at all stages of the game, granted he's not ahead of you. You might have to rush a 3035_32.png if he rushes pure armor against you.

Try to dodge his ruptures with E or Q and then re-engage on him! That silence can be tricky to get around though.

Skill order: Q>W>E

Overall difficulty: 2/10

VS

Darius

Medium

Play carefully against 122_64.png, because he can really punish you early game. Try to force him to burn mana on you while shielding his harass. At level 6, you guys are both pretty even, so try to engage on him before he gets any Hemorrhage stacks on you.

Skill order: Q>E>W

Overall difficulty: 5/10

VS

Diana

Medium

Diana is innately tanky, and doesn't have too bad of a laning phase. Dodging her skillshots is imperative for beating her, and is infinitely more important when she hits level 6, as it allows her to reset her ultimate cooldown.

Skill order: Q>E>W

Overall difficulty: 6/10

VS

Dr. Mundo

Easy

Pretty much the same as 131_64.png in the sense that you can just dodge his poke. He will often try to play passive and farm by throwing cleavers at the minions. To prevent him from farming, you can just shield in front of your minion to deny him. When he comes up for a last hit, this is your chance to punish him!

TIP: Grabbing 14.png is very important if you want to constantly punish him, especially after level 6!

Skill order: Q>E>W (if you want to deny him more cs early)
Q>W>E (if you want to go full ham on 36_64.png)

Overall difficulty: 1/10

VS

Ekko

Medium

I hate this champion so much. He better get nerfed, because that 2+ second aoe stun is absurd. Anyways..

I commonly regard Ekko to be the AP Zed. High mobility and burst. You need to trade against him cautiously, as getting caught in that stun will probably get you killed. Dodging his Q shouldn't be an issue. You should engage onto him when his Q is on cooldown. As you approach him, he will generally try to drop down his stun, so you have to back off until it ends. Ideally, you want to have your 3rd Q and E off cooldown after he uses his stun.

Play level 6 carefully against Ekko, as he can quickly turn the tides of the battle with his ultimate. Save your wind slash for after he ults. Taking 14.png will also reduce the amount of health returned to him after ulting. I highly advise grabbing a 3155_32.png in this matchup.

Overall difficulty: 7/10

Skill order: Q>E>W

VS

Fiora

Medium

This lane is essentially a skill matchup. If 114_64.png is smart, she'll try to burst you when your cooldowns are off. You can trade with her, but keep in mind she will out-sustain you with her passive! This lane is pretty one-sided if the other gets a lead. If you feel taking 14.png is required, go for it. But personally I run 12.png against her.

TIP: If Fiora uses her ultimate on you, dash as quickly as you can towards your tower to bring her under tower aggro. If she kills you under your tower with her minions being targeted, she will NOT get tower aggro.

Skill order: Q>E>W

Overall difficulty: 5/10 (can be extremely easy or extremely brutal)

VS

Fizz

Medium

His dot actually does a surprising amount of damage, so be careful. Time your skills well to avoid getting trolled by his E. If you don't fall behind, you will be able to trade with him almost all the time. Be careful, as this is a very snowbally matchup.

Skill order: Q>E>W

Overall difficulty: 4/10

VS

Gangplank

Hard

Yarharhar! You're going to make sure that 41_64.png goes down with his ship. Abuse the brush to your advantage in order to avoid his relentless Q poke, as he will likely start flask 3 pots in this matchup. You do have to be slightly cautious of his level 1 cheese. His passive makes it so he essentially has a red buff at level 1. At level 6, you obviously gain the bigger power spike, and you should definitely all-in him.

TIP: When he eats his oranges, make sure to use the other form of cc on him. For example, if you knock him up with Q and he eats oranges, stun him with W.

Skill order: Q>W>E

Overall difficulty: 2/10

-- New GP

wtf his laning is so strong. a good gp will be able to zone you extremely hard at all points in the game. Request for ganks, and play carefully.

If you happen to hit 6 before him, you could perhaps try a flash engage?

Skill order: Q>E>W

Overall difficulty: 8/10

VS

Garen

Medium

Let me make something very clear. 99% of the community thinks 86_64.png counters 92_64.png. Sure the silence is annoying, but you win just about every trade against him. If he uses Q, you just retreat until he autos a minion. Make sure to apply constant pressure to him so his passive doesn't kick in. Chances are 86_64.png will rush armor, so you might have to rush 3035_32.png in that scenario. At level 6, you guys are both quite strong. As long as you don't get silenced, you will win every trade!

Skill order: Q>E>W

Overall difficulty: 4/10

VS

Gnar

Medium

God damn yordles. Look at his smug smile. 150_64.png It sickens me.

Anyways, this matchup is quite difficult considering how hard he can poke and kite you. To win this matchup, you're going to have to hope that he hops away every time you try to engage on him with EQ. Your cooldown on E and Q are much shorter than his E cooldown. You might have to start 1029_32.png+2003_32.pngx5 in this matchup. Avoid getting hit by his 3-ring passive.

TIP: Fight him when he's in his large form after he burns his jump or stun. His cooldowns in mega form are extremely high, so dueling him becomes so much easier.
Skill matchup: Q>E>W or even E>Q>W

Overall difficulty: 6/10

VS

Gragas

Medium

Much fatness. This champion has a bit of sustain, while you have none. I've seen a couple of 11.png12.png users on 79_64.png, and it's surprisingly annoying. This champion does quite a bit of damage despite being able to build tanky or damage-oriented. If you try to engage on him, chances are he will either flee unscathed or he'll trade evenly with you. Try to accumulate any lead on this champion, otherwise he'll out-scale you by building tanky.

Overall difficulty: 5/10

Skill order: Q>E>W

VS

Hecarim

Medium

Oh god, this pony is sooo annoying to deal with. Early game you will smash this pony in lane. However, if he gains a lead of any sort (no pun intended), he will beat you in long, drawn-out trades. If you can dodge his ult during a skirmish, you might have a chance of beating him at 6.

Skill order: Q>W>E (early aggression)
Q>E>W (if you've been poked hard from minions + hec?)

Overall difficulty: 5/10

VS

Heimerdinger

Easy

Early game, his turrets are destroyed in 2 auto attacks, so do that whenever he places them down. Take advantage of him when he does not have his turrets, as they as probably his biggest dps source.

Overall difficulty: 3/10

Skill order: Q>W>E

VS

Irelia

Medium

This is one of few "pure skill matchups". If either one of you gets a lead in this lane, it should begin to snowball out of control. Irelia has it slightly easier if she loses because she can build tanky and still fulfill the role of being a tank in teamfights. Make sure to watch your hp when facing Irelia, as her E will stun if you have more HP than her.

Ideally, you should use your E when she uses her E to negate the damage taken during the CC duration. Use your W after she's activated her W, so she can't utilize her true damage on you. (Thanks Milranduil (NA) for the tip!)

Skill order: Q>E>W

Overall difficulty: 5/10

VS

Jarvan IV

Hard

This champion will make you cry all the way back to fountain. His passive will shred your health every few seconds with just a single auto attack. If he hits level two before you, run out of his EQ range because he can chunk you extremely hard. Try to dodge his EQ and then maybe you'll have a chance at trading with him.

The reason why I evaluated this matchup as being hard is because of his monstrously powerful early game. If you can transition into mid-game without dying, you'll have a chance at beating him.

Skill order: Q>E>W

Overall difficulty: 7/10

VS

Jax

Medium

Imagine if he had a real weapon. In late game, he definitely has a real weapon. Therefore, you need to smash Jax in laning phase and make sure he never hits his power spike. At level 3 he gains a small power spike, so make sure to shield his damage and then retaliate.

TIP: If you auto attack Jax while he's spinning, he'll hit you harder, so cease auto attacking until he's done spinning. Funnily enough, this is the only instance where fast combo will not benefit you.

TIP 2: If you time it correctly, you can EW (animation cancel) to stun Jax and dash just in time to dodge his stun.

Skill order: Q>W>E (if Jax didn't start E)
Q>E>W (if Jax started E)

Overall difficulty: 3/10
Overall diffculty as the game goes on.. : 9/10

VS

Jayce

Medium
126_64.png will poke and harass you for days. You might want to start 1029_32.png+2003_32.pngx5 if you're inexperienced at this matchup. When you get all 3 skills, try to engage on him and dish out a bit of damage before he switches to hammer form to swat you back.

Skill order: Q>E>W
If you're able to complete a full q combo at level 1 to him, you can consider going Q>W>E.

Overall difficulty: 5/10

VS

Karthus

Easy

Gap closers are 30_64.png's worst enemy. Therefore, Riven is his worst enemy. :^)

The only difficult thing about laning against Karthus is how safely he can play. All he has to do is drop a Q to last hit, then idle far from you. Be ready to dodge or shield some single-target Qs, too, as they can hurt.

TIP: Your E should be timed carefully so you can survive his ultimate in a pinch.

TIP2: In the mid-game, he has plenty of tools to kite you, so be careful. If he chooses to use his wall in lane, he'll run out of mana very quickly, allowing you to all-in him.

Skill order: Q>W>E

Overall difficulty: 2/10

VS

Kassadin

Easy

Take advantage of his weak early game. You can definitively win every trade with him, unless he somehow manages to get a lead on you. His Q doesn't silence anymore, and its shield only protects him against magic damage. Ward up and play aggressive!

His best bet is to out-roam you at level 6, since even then he shouldn't be able to duel you.

Overall difficulty: 2/10

Skill order: Q>W>E or Q>E>W if he starts2041_32.png

VS

Kayle

Medium

Early game she will harass you relentlessly. Make sure to shield her Q, as it has a missile speed, and is not instant. She can kite you quite well, so engage when her cooldowns are on.

TIP: Don't use your R active when her ultimate is activated! (duh)

Skill order: Q>E>W

Overall difficulty: 4/10

VS

Kennen

Hard

Once again, with the yordles... 85_64.png will make you cry enough tears to solve drought problems worldwide. His constant poke, pressure, and harass with leave you chugging health potions to no avail. Ask for ganks asap for this lane! It's impossible to get anywhere near this guy.

Skill order: Q>E>W

Overall difficulty: 10/10 (Why would you even play this matchup..?)

VS

LeBlanc

Medium

She does a lot of damage, and can harass you with auto attacks. Try to shove lanes into her tower to force her to miss last hits. She also has high mobility, so make sure to alert your teammates when she's roaming or follow her. She has fairly big burst at 6, so don't underestimate her damage.

When her passive is triggered, try to predict where LeBlanc will go. You'll look like a badass. :^)

Skill order: Q>E>W

Overall difficulty: 6/10

VS

Lee Sin

Medium

This is pretty much a pure skill matchup. You both excel at duels, have shields, and some form of cc. Don't let him get a Q on you at level 1 or else you're gonna be zoned for a few levels. Engage on 64_64.png when he misses (lol he's blind) a skillshot or is out of position.

TIP: You outscale him, so if you don't die to him or if you beat him early, he's done for.

Skill order: Q>W>E (if you haven't been harassed out of lane, and if you hit level 2 first)
otherwise.. Q>E>W

Overall difficulty: 5/10

VS

Lissandra

Ice witch? More like ice bitch. Harass after harass. You can try to all in at level 2 if you get it first, but it's very hard to get close to her without getting poked down. Be very careful at level 6 because you can't do anything if you're ulted by her.

If you don't win this lane early, you're boned late-game. He benefits from stacking armor, and will definitely be an unstoppable force if you don't manage to get a few kills off him in the early-mid game. If you can, avoid this matchup. (It is fun, though)

Skill matchup: Q>E>W

VS

Maokai

Medium

This champion is really annoying to deal with, and has a lot of natural sustain. Trade carefully against him, making sure to avoid minion aggro whenever possible. His limiting factor during the early game is his mana pool. Try to abuse him when he's out of mana! Also, be aware of his power spike at level 6.

TIP: Time your 3rd Q properly, or else his W will either dodge or "stop" your Q.
TIP 2: Grab 14.png if you'd like.
Skill order: Q>E>W

Overall difficulty: 5/10

VS

Mordekaiser

Medium

He has a lot of poke potential. Once he gets a few items, he'll poke for harder and will out-sustain you. He doesn't focus on killing you, and only tries to poke you and shove waves in. Buy a couple of health pots and you should be fine. At level 6 you should be able to burst him, as his ult only does damage in small increments. hue

after morde patch

wtf this champ is broken and does stupid damage and shields for a ton

TIP: Don't let him use his Q empowered auto attack on you three times. You should be able to kite him so he definitely does not get the third powerful auto on you.
Skill order: Q>E>W

Overall difficulty: 6/10

if anything, he's more annoying than difficult

hue

VS

Morgana

Hard

There's not really much to say about this lane. She has too many mechanisms to escape from you while farming safely. She will essentially push lanes into you forever. Rush 3077.png for some additional waveclear. If she ever misses her bind, engage on her. At 6, she becomes a threat as she can halt your attempt at an all-in.

Skill order: Q>E>W

Overall difficulty: 5/10

note: This isn't a difficult matchup, it's just that you don't get many opportunities to fight Morgana unless you play extremely recklessly.

VS

Nasus

Medium
"The cycle of life and death continues. We will live, they will die."

This quote from 75_64.png could not be more true. Early game, you will have to punish this little puppy back to the pound. Building a 3035_32.png is imperative for winning this matchup (later in the game). Stock up on health potions because he will out-sustain you eventually.

TIP: A lot of junglers tend to camp for a Nasus, so stay warded and play safe when a jungler is around.

Skill order: Q>W>E

Overall difficulty (early): 1/10

Overall difficulty (mid): 4/10

Overall difficulty (late): 8/10

VS

Nidalee

Medium

Pure skill matchup. Dodge her spears and her traps and you should be able to trade with her. If either one of you gets a lead, the enemy is going to suffer. Nidalee does mixed damage, so you might want a few 1055_32.png or a 3044_32.png to survive the burst.

Skill order: Q>W>E or Q>E>W (your preference)
If you're better at dodging, go Q>W>E. If not, go Q>E>W.

Overall difficulty: 5/10

VS

Nocturne

Easy

Fighting Nocturne is pretty simple, as long as you don't get feared by his spell. There are other factors, such as making sure he fails to absorb one of your spells, and not fighting him on his Q, but the fear is the catalyst to his burst. Try to bait out his fear with your first Q, and then simply retreat with E + Q +Q to break the tether.

VS

Olaf

Hard
Olaf is a pretty scary laner, because he can build full tank and still dish out tons of damage. In this matchup, you have to be able to shield his true damage and trade with him when your minions are hitting him. Be careful when his hp runs low, as his attack speed and lifesteal with skyrocket with his W and innate passive.

SKILLS: Q>E>W

Overall difficulty: 8/10

VS

Pantheon

Medium

so many spears plz avoid matchup

Skill order: E>E>E>E>E

Overall difficulty: 11/10

--

but yea pantheon is annoying, so abuse the brush.

Skill order> Q>E>W

Overall difficulty: 6/10

ask for ganks m8

VS

Poppy

Easy

Shield her Q damage (which is suprisingly high), and trade with her whenever you want. Position yourself so you are never able to be stunned from her E. Also, never dive her. Passive op.

TIP: Take 14.png; it shits on her passive. True damage :^)

TIP 2: She scales hard into late game, so end games quick.

Skill order: Q>W>E or Q>E>W (personal preference)

Overall difficulty: 2/10

==this will be updated when new Poppy comes around==

VS

Quinn

Hard

So much poke and her Vault is perfect for escaping your grasp. Your best bet is to wait for her to run out of mana or when her Vault is off cooldown.

Skill order: Q>E>W

Overall difficulty: 9/10

VS

Renekton

Medium

Pure skill matchup. You might have to practice this matchup a few times to get accustomed to it. Use your shield when he begins his combo, and try to out-trade him.

You can also use your 3rd Q to stop him in his dash, causing him to not reach the full intended distance!
TIP: Take 14.png if you need it. :^)

Skill order: Q>E>W

Overall difficulty: 5/10

VS

Rengar

Medium

He's going to try to abuse the bushes as much as possible, as he wants to avoid brawling with you. He has a lot of poke over you, even though you're both mana-less champions. He has a considerable amount of burst at level 1 with double Q + ignite, so be careful for that. At level 6, he will start roaming, so just push up your waves or just fight him when he's in lane.

A good Rengar shouldn't be taking hits from you at all, because he can just cs safely with his ebola strike or his auto attacks (from brushes).

Skill order: Q>E>W

Overall difficulty: 5/10

VS

Riven

Easy

after u read this guide you'll be a riven god duh

VS

Rumble

Medium

Trade with him when he's overheating, or when his resource bar is still empty. Otherwise, you'll lose just about every trade.

TIP: Rush 3155.png to win this lane.
Skill order: Q>E>W

Overall difficulty: 6/10

VS

Ryze

Hard

The reason why I put the difficulty of 13_64.png as Medium is because the lane can go either way. How you win this lane is level 2 cheese. What do I mean by that? Grab 14.png, start 1036_32.png + 2003_32.pngx3, hit level two first, skill Q>W, and all in this fool.

If you don't play this matchup right, you're going to be poked for the entire laning phase, and you will be underfarmed as a result.

Skill order: Q>W>E

Overall difficulty: 4/10

-- Updated for post-change Ryze

I haven't fought against a post-change Ryze yet, but it appears that his harass is a lot less prevalent due to his Q being a skillshot. Basically, this makes it so surviving laning phase against a Ryze who is ahead of you is a lot easier. You can still use the ignite cheese method, but I think taking teleport is now a smart and safe option.

-- Updated for post-post-change Ryze

He has a lot of poke, and a lot of burst once he gets all of his skills (Q,W,E) and items. Play safe and ask for ganks. Hexdrinker + cdr and you will be fine.

Skill order: Q>E>W

Overall difficulty: 8/10

VS

Shaco

Easy
Top AP Shaco is a joke if you play intelligently. Always note the locations of his jackinthebox.png. Use rivenfeint.png to absorb the poke from Shaco's twoshivpoison.png. When he's out of mana without boxes nearby, that's your chance to all-in him.

Skill order: Q>W>E

Overall difficulty: 1/10

VS

Shen

Medium

Shen can choose to use his Q to cs somewhat safely, or he can choose to use it to harass you. Rush 3035_32.png against him if he builds armor (which he likely will). He'll only get stronger as the game progresses, so make sure you destroy him early. Ask for ganks!

Overall difficulty: 7/10
Skill order: Q>E>W

post change update:

i think he got easier to deal with now, simply because you can avoid fighting him in his W, rendering him somewhat useless. the new duskblade item is really good against shen, because it does %missing health and just demolishes tanks in general. don't fight shen when he has his Q autos active, and then the rest should be the same!

also he can't cs very safely with his Q anymore. make sure to harass him after he procs his shield.

4/10
Q>W>E

VS

Shyvana

Easy

Be careful of her W damage. Shield her W damage and trade with her with Q and W. Avoid her E also!

No one really plays Shyvana top anymore, so I'm just going off of what I remember back in 4.15 or so.

Skill order: Q>E>W or Q>W>E

Overall difficulty: 2/10

VS

Singed

Easy

You shit on this champion. He can't trade with you at all. His best bet is to proxy, so just get a jungler to deal with him for easy kills. If he does proxy later in the game when he's 0/10 or so, just buy sustain and farm the minions with ease.

Skill order: Q>W>E

Overall difficulty: 3/10

VS

Sion

Medium

This champion does a lot of damage, especially if his E shoots a minion at you. Trade carefully with him. If he starts charging up his Q, do not cancel his animation with 3rd Q or W, as it will just go on a 2 second cooldown. Instead, make him waste the full 10/9/8/7/6 second cooldown.

TIP: He scales hard into lategame thanks to the passive on his W, so try to end the game quickly!

Skill order: Q>E>W

Overall difficulty: 6/10

VS

Soraka

Hard

ok not really a matchup (rip soraka top 2014-2014), but her silence is annoying. Really messes with your flow during teamfights.

VS

Swain

Hard

This is very similar to the Ryze matchup, so make sure to read up notes on it. Level 2 cheese. After he gets a few items, he becomes very scary in a 1v1 scenario. Ask for ganks!

Skill order: Q>E>W

Overall difficulty: 10/10

VS

Syndra

Medium

Q away when she uses her Q, and E to sidestep her stun. If you get stunned, she can almost certainly burst you down to zero. The same applies for you; stun her and burst her.

Skill order: Q>E>W

Overall difficulty: 3/10

VS

Teemo

Medium

Read Ryze notes. Most low elo Teemo players shouldn't pose a threat, but if you're against high elo players such as The Rain Man, glhf. :^)

Skill order: Q>W>E (cheese) or Q>E>W.

Overall difficulty: 5/10

VS

Tryndamere

Medium

Skill matchup. (Because Tryndamere requires skill, right?) Don't let him start building up fury or else he can cheese you at level 1 or 2. After 6, you have to be very careful when fighting him, due to his broken ultimate. I would advise you to stick in lane with him, as he will slowly become a 75_64.png, in terms of scaling.

Skill order: Q>W>E or Q>E>W (depending on who pushes level 2 first)

Overall difficulty: 4/10

VS

Twisted Fate

Easy

Try to bait out his W with either one of your Q procs or an E. Once he locks in a card/the card expires, engage on him. In this lane, 4_64.png can only wave-clear or roam. You can either pursue him as he roams, or take towers. Expect ganks from the enemy jungler as the 4_64.png will likely ask for them.

Skill order: Q>W>E

Overall difficulty: 2/10

VS

Udyr

Medium

beware the trick2g fanboys. This champion is one of few (if not the only??) who can trade with you at level 1 and come out on top. His double tiger + ignite at level 1 is insane, so be careful. You can start trading with him at level 2 or 3. Don't expect to hit level 2 first in this matchup.

This champion is mana-based, so when he's out of mana, that's your chance to go in on him.

note: Later in the game, Udyr will have a larger mana pool, and can be extremely hard to catch up to, considering his E's movement speed.

Skill order: E>Q>W

Overall difficulty: 5/10 (just don't get cheesed at level 1)

VS

Veigar

Easy

He has to use his mana to harass you early on, therefore giving himself limited mana to cc you. Your gap closers + Veigar = rekt

Just be wary of ganks. :^) He's also definitely a bigger force late game.

Skill order: Q>E>W

Overall difficulty: 3/10

VS

Vladimir

Medium
Read Ryze matchup notes. Take 14.png and all-in at level 2.

SKILLS: Q>W>E

Overall difficulty: 5/10

NOTE: If you grab 12.png, the lane isn't much harder. Just go Q>E>W to withstand some of his harass.

VS

Volibear

Medium

This champion has a pretty solid early-game cheese with his W execute damage, so be careful. Take 14.png to deal with his passive. Although his passive will be up more often than your ignite is, only fight him when you have ignite or only fight him when his passive is down.

Volibear can build tanky while dishing out tons of damage, so beware!
Skill order: Q>W>E

Overall difficulty: 4/10

VS

Wukong

Easy

You can out-trade him at just about any time. Don't fight him when you have the armor reduction from his Q. Remember he is mana-based, and you can out-trade him whenever he's out of mana. At level 6, he gains a pretty big power spike along with you.

Skill order: Q>E>W

Overall difficulty: 3/10

VS

Xerath

Medium

As with just about any AP mid laner, shove your creeps into their tower to make them struggle for a single minion kill. It is quite hard to get to Xerath, given his CC options. Shield his Q poke and try to hold on in this lane.

TIP: If you see Xerath charge his Q within proximity of your combo, dash onto him as it will force him to cancel his own spell just to reposition.

TIP2: Be wary when letting him auto attack you, as you become mana sustain for him.

Skill order: Q>E>W

Overall difficulty: 4/10

i have yet to play against a good xerath, so bring it on!

VS

Yasuo

Easy

Yasuo's early game is trash, so take advantage of this. When you hit 6, bait out his W first before using your ultimate. Aside from that, happy killing!

Skill order: Q>W>E

Overall difficulty: 1/10

VS

Yorick

Hard

Yorick outsustains you, and can build tanky while dishing out tons of damage. You can't really fight him unless he's out of mana. Try to roam into other lanes if you misplay the lane.

Rush sustain, and make sure to constantly restock on health potions.

Essential items: 3074.png2003.png3033.png

Skill order: Q>E>W

Overall difficulty: 7/10

VS

Zed

Medium

Skill matchup. He can poke you while you can chunk him. At level 6, try not to miss your ult because Zed is very slippery.

Skill order: E>Q>W

Overall difficulty: 5/10

VS

Ziggs

Medium

Play cleverly against Ziggs, because this lane can go in 2 ways: Ziggs will poke you to death/out of lane, or you will be able to gap-close and smash him. When he uses his satchel charge, get ready to engage onto him after your cooldowns are refreshed. You should be able to fight him at any given time in the laning phase.

Skill order: Q>E>W

Overall difficulty: 5/10

VS

Zilean

Easy

During the laning phase, Zilean will have to expend his mana to harass you with his Q. To negate some of the damage, put 2 ranks into your E to negate some of the damage. If you are able to cheese him, you could kill him with your basic Q combo and 14.png. Time your ultimate properly to render his ultimate useless.

Skill order: Q>E>W>E

Overall difficulty: 3/10

Season 6 Riven Back to Top

I'm going to give a little breakdown of what I think of season 6 as a whole, and what it means for champions like Riven.

* Games are a lot shorter, so feast-or-famine champions like Riven can benefit a great deal.

* With the removal of Brutalizer, two new items have replaced it: 3133.png and 3134.png.  This means bruisers such as Riven will be reaching their power spikes a lot later, as now we have to invest into two items.

* Tiamat has been changed so that it does not give you the aoe on your basic attacks, which means you can now build this item to gain a stat advantage, without pushing the lane. This means you can deny your enemies while building Tiamat now!

* As Riven, you can do either 18/12 or 12/18. I personally value the higher cdr cap, but you could play with both and see which one you prefer!

* Late-game Riven is even stronger than before, with the addition of the 3142.png buff and the introduction of the 3812.png.

About the Author Back to Top

Hey there! My name's Jason, and this is my Riven guide. I've been maining Riven since season 3, and I think I have a plethora of information about Riven to share with you guys!

A little bit about myself..
I started playing League of Legends since Season 1 (October 2010), and have played ever since. I didn't start playing ranked until season 3, because I simply do not like the mode. Ranked is stressful, and I can see why some don't like to play it. In season 4, I achieved Gold V for the Victorious skin and Victorious ward skins. (I ended with Plat IV mmr, but that isn't saying much.) Anyways, I've been playing Riven for a while, and this guide is essentially a compilation of all of my experiences with the champion.

I was heavily inspired to start maining Riven and to make this guide from watching Boxbox. Most of you know him as the best Riven player, and I agree. His stream is twitch.tv/flosd, if you're interested. I, too, have a twitch account (twitch.tv/thejaysunn), but don't expect to find me streaming very often, if at all. My username in-game is TheJaysunn (now Regi) (NA).

So, without further hesitation, enjoy my Riven guide!

Fast Q Combo vs Regular Q Combo Back to Top

Why fast combo? Well, it greatly increases your dps in short bursts. In the following videos, you can see both the regular and fast combos. It doesn't really have any effect while jungling (aside from looking cool), but is an essential tool for trading blows in lane.

Regular Q Combo

To execute the regular Riven combo, simply hover over your desired target and press Q. Do this 3 times, with a single auto attack after every Q.

Riven Fast Q Combo

Fast Q combo on Riven can be a bit tricky for newer Riven players. To execute this, you begin by hovering your cursor over your target, and press Q. Before the animation is finished, click elsewhere to move (thus cancelling your Q animation) and then auto attack your target. Repeat this 3 times and then you'll have mastered it. Take some time to practice it in a custom game!

So as you can see, I'm able to complete my full combo in a shorter amount of time, thus increasing my dps! Works great if you're trying to trade in short bursts (which you definitely should)!

Update: 1/17 Riot is planning to implement a change to the Q fast combo, which I'm very furious about. This will make it a lot harder for you to look like a good Riven player, both aesthetically and gameplay-wise.

EDIT: Riot has confirmed that this was an unintended change, so hooray! Continue to learn fast comboing to dominate the fields of justice!

Harassing/Poking as Riven Back to Top

Since Riven is a resource-less champion, she relies purely on cooldown reduction. With this build, you can achieve 45% cdr at 18 with two 3133.png items and a 3158_32.png. Having said that, you should (within reason) try to trade with your enemy as often as possible, trying to whittle down their health so you can kill them in a final all-in.

Early Game Scenarios Back to Top

At level 1, you can trade with just about anyone and come up on top. Because you will be starting Q 99% of the time, your Q > AA > Q > AA > Q > AA combo should be able to chunk someone to at least half hp.

If given the opportunity, you should always push up for an early level 2 and all-in your opponent.

Bam. More often than not, you can force your enemy laner to blow their flash or escape summoner spell.

tl;dr play aggro af (90% of the time)

Mid-Game Scenarios Back to Top

At this point of the game, I'm hoping you have a few kills, and are farming decently. You should almost never lose lane/be behind, unless you're against someone like 80_64.png. If you have 12.png, you should constantly be looking to split-push, and teleport to your allies when the time is right. If you grabbed 14.png, you'll likely have to stay with your team or split-pushing then grouping. If your enemy laner has 12.png, it's your job to stop/follow him. You can cancel their teleport with either your 3rd Q or W, so this is a great way to prevent them from joining a team-fight that you can't join.

You should also have a 3341_32.png, so you can clear wards and defend objectives such as towers or dragon. Be careful when 1v1'ing others when enemies are mia, because teams tend to group during mid-late game. In lower elo, this doesn't really apply, but it's better to be safe than to be sorry. :^)

Late-Game Scenarios Back to Top

If I told you late-game was different from mid-game, I'd be lying to you. Except, throws are a lot more impactful at this stage of the game, be it through longer death timers and free barons/dragons. It is imperative that you watch the mini-map to make sure your allies aren't being picked off by a 5-man group. You should be able to 1v1 anyone as late-game Riven (there are always exceptions of course).

If you have 12.png, split-push bot if Baron is up, because this forces the enemy team to send 1 person bottom. If this person doesn't have 12.png, you have to option to teleport to your team if they begin a fight, effectively making the fight a 5v4 in your team's favor. If this person does have 12.png, use your W and 3rd Q to cancel his teleport, then find a safe spot to teleport yourself into the fight.

If you like to grab 14.png instead, you're better off splitting mid or top, so you can be closer to your team should a teamfight break out.

TL;DR split but don't get caught, tp to team if they need it, etc.

Engaging Team Fights Back to Top

There are multiple scenarios as to how you can engage a team fight. With this build, you aren't building tanky at all, because that would cost you damage, so you're going to have to engage carefully.

1) Flash Engage
This is my personal favorite. You can really surprise your enemies by a E+R+4.png+3074_32.png+W. This will let you pull out your ultimate while doing massive aoe and stunning the enemy team. This will definitely catch your enemies off guard, and will likely net you a kill, or an ace for your team.

2)

-will work on this on a later date. School's starting back up, so I'm busy busy busy :C

Skill Combos Back to Top

Now that you've mastered fast Q on Riven, maybe you should take a look into some other combos as Riven. Alright, straight into the deep end!

video(s) coming soon! uploading videos takes a long time :^(

#1) Tiamat/Ravenous Hydra + Q
You want to begin by activating your 3077_32.png/3074_32.png, and then immediately press Q (any of the three will do). (I will upload a video of me activating the Tiamat/Hydra at 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Q if someone requests for it!)

#2) E + Tiamat/Ravenous Hydra + Q
Essentially the same combo as above, but you begin with your E.

pros: gap close + damage
cons: tiamat can't do its full damage potential unless you're right next to them/on them

#3) Tiamat/Ravenous Hydra + W
Simply do the above with your W. When executing this combo, make sure you're within range so your stun will land! It's a common mistake to just damage them with your Tiamat/Ravenous Hydra without landing/dealing damage with the stun.

#4) E + Tiamat/Ravenous Hydra + W
Same as above, but lead with E.

#5) W + Q animation cancel
Skips the animation of the Q for that smooth damage output.

#6) wow where'd that ult come from lmao (E + R)

You can really surprise your opponents at level 6 with this skill combo. Normally casting your ultimate takes like 0.25 seconds or something, so your opponents will have a decent amount of time to react. This, however, makes it near instant, and your opponents will never expect it!

Wall Jumps/Hops Back to Top

To my knowledge, I'm pretty sure you can do every wall hop/jump on both sides of the map. (To be honest, I was just too lazy to wait to upload 60 individual wall hop videos, so here you go!)

Honorable Mentions (More Techniques) Back to Top

I've put these techniques into a separate category, as they aren't really classified as "skill combos." Enjoy!

1) No-cooldown Q

If you are able to space out the intervals in which you press Q, your Q will seemingly have no cooldown, assuming you have 40% cdr. In the following video clip, I have somewhere around 37% cdr, so my Q is only close to being off cooldown. This is useful if you prepare to cheese someone in a brush, as you are able to have more than 1 rotation of Q available at your disposal.

2) Repositioning in Mid-Air (patched?)

The usage for this technique is pretty situational. It allows you to re-orient Riven's position whilst midair, which has a few possible usages. For starters, it will allow you to knock up players who are behind you with less difficulty. To illustrate this idea, you'll have to know that Riven's 3rd Q knocks up people in a circle, but this circle mainly affects the area slightly in front of Riven.

3) Auto-cancelling with E
You can start your auto attack animation, and then cancel it with E. If done correctly, your passive will proc on that auto attack (from the E) and you will effectively get an empowered auto attack!

*Mid lane matchups

Jungle Riven Guide Back to Top

(4/20/2014) - Hey guys, I've recently been testing out Riven in the jungle, and it works quite well! I'll be writing another guide for that separately, and I'll transfer over some matchups while adding new jungle matchups! Stay tuned friends!

--

Hey guys, I'm currently working on a jungle guide for Riven. I'll post updates on it here in the meantime. ^_^

Teleport Strategy (may be useless in S6) Back to Top

12.png is a very versatile summoner spell. Here are some appropriate usages for it:

1. You can clear a jungle camp (wolves, for example) and then proceed to head into lane via teleport. By doing wolves, you can start in lane with 1055_32.png + 2003_32.pngx5 + 2044_32.png OR 1036_32.png + 2003_32.pngx5 + 2043_32.png

If you start with the Doran's route, you should not need to use your health potion at all.

If you started the long sword route, you should need to use one health potion. This start is generally used if there's a stealth jungler on the enemy team, or if you really need to rush armor penetration against your laner.

2. Teleport ganking is useful to sneak up behind your enemies by use of minions/wards/teleportable objects. This can also be used to prepare for objectives such as Baron Nashor or Dragon.

2a. By the same token, you can gank by walking into other lanes, and then teleporting back to your lane's tower in order to prevent losing your tower/creep exp.

There are other impractical uses for teleport, but I won't state them here. :^) (example: teleporting to a minion to prevent it from taking tower damage)

== AS OF SEASON 6 OR SOMEWHERE ALONG THOSE LINES ==
You can now take 1 small creep from your enemy's buff spawn to attempt a level 2 cheese! Doing a camp is no longer recommended as you do not hit 2 after a camp (without smite), and due to the high cost of health potions. :^)
