Summoner Spells Back to Top

Ignite for the added kill pressure and with Riven, you want to be scoring kills.

Masteries Back to Top

There are 2 major mastery builds, one is the build shown above where you go for CDR and Thunderlords in the cunning tree while trying to maximize damage, the only change in this build would be taking double edged sword instead of feast if you feel confident in your laning and are willing to take the risk.

The other build is taking 18/12/0 or 18/0/12 while taking fervor in Ferocity and utilizing that for increased sustain DPS in teamfights and skirmishes however you wont be able to have 45% CDR with this build and you wont have the same early game trading or burst in general that thunderlords can provide.

You definitely want to max Q first since it's your bread and butter skill, pretty much the skill that defines the champion. Afterwards you want to max E next since it greatly increases your survivability and mobility. Finally you max W last since it scales the least out of the 3 skills.

Whenever you can point into your ultimate, point into it (obviously).

If you skip out on cleaver and need CDR
    Against massive tanks
Riven a bit of a mixed auto attacker/AD Caster so you have a bit of a unique build for her.

First you want to try your best to rush either a Ghostblade or a Black Cleaver since they both give Riven what she needs: CDR, AD, Armor Pen and a bit of mobility. Black Cleaver is definitely better against tanky opponents since they will have larger pools of armor to make use of the % Penetration Cleaver offers but Ghostblade can give you a much stronger spike against lane opponents that you can possibly kill. Ultimately what you buy on riven is based on your opponents and experience with the matchups which come with time.

After your first armor pen item you should look to buy a tiamat.

The reason behind buying a Tiamat (Ravenous Hydra) is because the active component of Hydra/tiamat can be used during Riven's combos in order to cancel some animations, thus making it more smooth and potent.

Finally with your last 3 slots you want to be building "defensive" items or situational offensive items. I personally recommend Maw and GA as default options but Mercurial Scimitar and Randuin's Omen have their place in the build as well. Additionally Steraks can help you if you plan to teamfight and want to go deep into enemy lines without being obliterated later on in the game.

VS

Fizz

Easy

Very hard for Fizz to get free damage off onto Riven without being punished severely. If he ever Q's into you, look to retaliate, he'll most likely try to E away but you can chase him down and combo him even after he does that.

VS

LeBlanc

Medium

Very skill based matchup. If Leblanc ever tries to W you, you need to react immediately and try to stun her back and then follow up by comboing her and anticipating her to return to her original W location. If Leblanc tries to Q you, you need to use your E to block the damage.

VS

Orianna

Medium

Generally speaking you shouldn't be able to kill her, but she shouldn't be able to kill you.

When you go up to auto a minion and you see her send out her Q, dodge it with your E and get the last hit or go on her. Be careful jumping on her with a ton of creeps around however, once you hit 6 you gain killing potential on her as she has to be wary of your all in.

Before 6 try and farm up safely without getting harassed unless an opportunity to harass her greatly or kill her arises. Either by a gank, or her running out of mana or being in melee range of you.

VS

Poppy

Medium

Poppy is a champion to be weary of because her W can create and area that shuts down much of the mobility in your kit.

VS

Syndra

Hard

I personally think Syndra is a pretty hard match up for Riven for a few reasons.

1. If you try to gap close to Syndra, she just E you away and nukes you.

2. She has a slow and her poke hits realllly hard.

3. She's very versatile in item builds in the fact she can build anything and it won't be too bad.

So I recommend playing safe and asking for ganks as she needs to be able to harass you under turret to win the lane or she won't be able to push her advantage. You'll probably have to be able to dodge most of her skill shots with your E and Q to survive.

In the end, with any Riven match up if you're able to snowball you'll do fine vs her and demolish her in lane. But if you fall behind, oh you'll feel the pain...

VS

Twisted Fate

Easy

Once TF uses his Gold card you can easily pressure him by walking up and threatening to jump on him with your various mobility skills. The only concern and difficulty you should ever have with this lane matchup is that TF can make stronger roams than you and could potentially get strong from these roams as well as get his teammates ahead so make sure to punish TF each time he looks to leave his lane.

VS

Urgot

Hard

He just bullies you out of lane and if you try to engage, he should have enough distance and follow up spells to make sure your all-in is unsuccessful.

VS

Zed

Medium

So this matchup is a little tricky. You should avoid all Qs he sends to you either by dodging it or using E to tank it.

However you don't want to push too hard on him as Zed can farm under a turret easily. In the case you guys break out into a fight, your abilities are easier to land than his, so try and juke his Q with your E and you should win the fight.

Just don't get poked down by his W-E or W-Q combos and you should win the lane. Once you hit 6, save your stun for after he ultis to you, and don't let his shadows juke your ultimate. I

If you stun him the moment he ultimates to you, you should win the fight. It's up to you to throw the fight against Zed, as it is easier for you to outplay him than vice versa.

VS

Ziggs

Medium

Farm lane, if you ever get the chance to engage onto him you should do so as you should be able to kill him quite easily (unless he W's or flash's away).

Riven Tips and Tricks Back to Top

The most common trick to learn is the AA/Q animation cancelling. Complete an auto, use Q to cancel the auto animation, then use move to cancel the Q animation.

Outside of the cancelling, you can use the third cast of Q to jump short distances or over short walls. The same can be said for E. You can also cancel the animation on your R by E'ing at the same time.

Your E is a quick Dash that provides you a shield, once again you can use it to extend the third Q range or your W for fast combos, you can also E R at the same time to cancel the animation of casting the ultimate or using the execute part of it.

You can basically cancel most of your slower animations with your E. So E + Q, E + R can be very good to practice.

Lastly, if you happen to have Tiamat, you can use it similarly to E to cancel animations as well.

The best Riven players perfect weaving 3 autos following each cast of your 3 q stacks in rapid succession.

It's not a terrible idea to always try to W before you cast R, as stunning them is more reliable then hoping they don't dodge when your R animation is casting.

The biggest concern you should have is to make sure you complete the damage activating portion of the animation before you cancel, otherwise you end up wasting both the ability and your cancelling move.

Similar to W + R, you can 3rd Q + R to mostly guarantee your R damage.

Lastly, Riven can be one of the best AD assassin's in the game. Her low cooldowns and high mobility are best utilized by abusing bush control and catching an enemy squishy off guard!
