Summoner Spells Back to Top

12.png: By far my most used summoner compared to ignite. Tp allows so much more versatility in the current meta. I feel that every top laner should be taking tp since is has so many options.
1. TP'ing back into lane to get a wave or two or your laner.
2. TP'ing behind enemy bot lane to help snowball your own bot lane or snag a few kills to get stronger.
3. The threat of a 4 v 4 turning into a 4 v 5. (With Riven's insane damage, she can easily clean up her fight with her execution ultimate atm, and tons of mobility and burst)

14.png:Ignite is still a valid and respected summoner in top. If played right, you won't lose any 1 v 1 in the top lane.

Masteries Back to Top

This is the set I have been using climbing back to Plat. However, testing the 12 in resolve is just as strong. The 15% on the summoner spell cooldown is fantastic with lucidity+distortion.

Most situations, maxing q first is the most optimal. Maxing q will give you so much more overall damage. The only downside with maxing q first is the cooldown isn't lowered if you max q first. With that reason in mind, there are a few more skill orders.

Maxing E then Wf: This is a very strong and allows Riven to become really difficult to kill. Maxing E first lowers the cooldown on her e to allow her to farm easier and make it so she can dodge alot of skillshots. This is an optimal skill path if against a ranged top laner. If you have to use your q's just to get to a ranged top laner, then the extra damage in her q is completely useless. For that reason, if against 150.png133.png127.png80.png17.png or any other AP mid laner that is going top to bully you. Since you are maxing e, you are able to tank there harass and still be able to farm. If you are playing with a skill set that allows you to get your passive off the most amount of times using your q as a mobility spell and relying on w damage and stun and your passive for most of damage.

Some people max w first cause of base damage and cooldown. I never liked this but it is always an option. I would always look to maxing e or q first.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Basic Start- Allows for quick build into Brutalizer or Tiamat. Fastest route into core items.
Another Start, I rarely use this start however. With the nerf to Doran's Blade, I don't find this start viable as long sword +3. It slows down rush for 40% CDR.
Final Option: Strong if scared about the lane. Possible against Garen if you don't know match up. Allows for an easier laning phase but slows down early kill pressure.

Core Items

Basic: I usually have this build 85-90% of my games. It allows for earliest 40% CDR, great wave clear, armor pen, life steal, as well as movement speed, and a ton of AD.
Black Cleaver is good when you know you are going against a very tanky top laner. You will have to pass up Brutalizer and CDR boots. You don't want to waste unneccesary CDR. Going Black Cleaver allows for Merc Treads to be built in exchange against CC heavy teams.
Must buy as a 3-4 item. Whenever they start to stack armor, immediately go for this.
    Possible FInal Build

Situational Items

Great buy against an AP top laner, if you are having a hard time top lane against an AP match up, hold off on Brutalizer and go Hex first. It is an extremely strong item and most forget about the shield when you get low. Allows to outplay opponent often when they aren't expecting a pretty substantial shield along with E early game. Do not finish this into Maw until late game.
If you are really fed and are trying to carry, GA is a must buy. If they blow all your cooldowns on you, this is indeed our guardian angel. When you are so fed, you dieing is the worst possible option. Stay alive at all cost.
Usually this is a 6th item. It allows for even more life steal and a shield. It is really strong with Riven's E. This item allows he to survive just a little bit longer in a team fight.
If high CC team, this is an excellent buy if you decided to go CDR boots and didn't go Merc Treads.

    Heavy AD teams

VS

Aatrox

Easy

Once you hit level 2, look for an early kill. If he fights you early just go for a combo with q and (w or e). Most likely he will run away or jump. Keep poking him down when ever possible. Most situations look to e into him then q-aa-w-aa-q-aa-q-aa. Try and get your stun off early so he can't fly away. Careful when he hits 6 but RIven usually wins level 6 fight.

VS

Cho'Gath

Easy

Cho is only a problem the later into the game it gets if he is building AP. Early game Riven wins hard so punish him. Look to all in him whenever you can but use your e or q to dodge his rupture. If he just throws feral scream to farm/harass, engage as soon as it ends.

VS

Darius

Easy

Darius has a rough time early game against Riven. Try to get in the inner range of his q if you are all inning. Harass when he tries to farm a minion. Zone him and make him farm/push the lane with his q.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Easy

Start E and look to farm until level 3. Try and get the level advantage and fight as soon as you get 3. Once he hits 6 its very hard to kill him and becomes a farming lane. Look to roam since he can't roam as well Riven can.

VS

Ekko

Easy

Start E, it shouldn't be too hard to dodge his q. If he ever tries to use his E as harass and he jumps to you. Stun him and auto attack then follow him with Q - auto attacks.

VS

Fiora

Medium

This is entirely a skill match up. If she can dodge your w or q, there goes a huge part of your combo. Start with E in this match up, she will be looking to proc her passive. When she dashes to you, dash with your e to soak up the damage and look to auto attack her and win the trade at level 1. Try and bait her riposte as much as possible and fight her when it is down.

VS

Gangplank

Easy

This is just too easy. If he lays down a barrel in a wave e to it and finish it off. You should never get caught in his barrels. Even when he lays down a barrel, waits for it to get to one charge, then lays down another and q's the first. Don't fall for his baits. Jump on him if he ever gets too close trying to farm with is q. If he ever goes melee form to farm, just kill him. He can only stop your w stun durations and Riven has enough damage she can still all in and get the kill through it if using her passive correctly. Start Q into W into E.

VS

Garen

Hard

While he is a counter, it isn't unwinnable. The new juggernaut Garen is very powerful. Start E and look to E into him whenever he q's you at level one. From level 2-3 Q into him auto attack and stun him auto attack and then e away blocking his q damage. You wont be able to get an all in trade will him. Fight him at 6. After he stacks armor, look to roam, its too risky to fight full armor Garen.

VS

Gnar

Easy

Max E first, use your q as a gap closer whenever he gets to close to farm and bait his jump. His jump is on a longer cooldown then your q so immediately try and fight him when your q comes back up. Max e first then w for increased spell rotations. A good gnar won't come back to farm without him jump so look to farm as well as possible and try and zone the gnar.

VS

Jax

Easy

Look to trade with your q - aa - w - aa - and e away. If he follows with his stun jump, then start fighting him with your other 2 other charges of q. Easy lane pre 6. Nearly impossible to kill him when his ult is up. Look to poke him down.

VS

Kalista

Hard

I hate Kalista top... like... no... just no...

VS

Kayle

Easy

Is this even played... never dive if have kayle has ultimate... combo when possible, use e to soak harass... easy

VS

Kennen

Hard

Wait for jungler ganks. He should be pressuring you with auto attacks and his q. Play safe and wait for level 6. Start and max e first.

VS

Lee Sin

Easy

Lee has no chance if you dodge his q. The only goal in this lane is dodge q, then fight him... easy.

VS

Lissandra

Easy

Rush hex, start e. She will just stun you if you jump on her so wait for jungler unless you think you can kill her. If she wastes stun ever all in her and try and stun her when you think Liss will try to dash out using her e.

VS

Malphite

Medium

Start e if he starts with his rolling rock. If it is an AP malph, max e first so he can't poke you out of lane. If he spams q, he will run out of mana very quickly. Most likely he will go full armor. Max q in this matchup and try and get an early kill around 3-4. After brutalizer, go last whisper.

VS

Maokai

Easy

Don't spam your ablities to just get your passive at 3 stacks. Try and farm without abilities and do combo on Maokai when he tries to CS. Don't allow him to just get free healing off passive.

VS

Master Yi

Easy

GG, he has no chance. In equal terms, Riven is favorable, just watch out for his summoners.

VS

Morgana

Hard

She will push the lane hard. Call to jungler for ganks and max e. She will be pressuring you hard under turret.

VS

Nasus

Easy

Riven is good against Nasus up to level 9 or so. Abuse it and zone him from farm early. If you can get an early gank and push him behind it will win you the lane.

VS

Olaf

Easy

Use e to dodge his axes. A good Olaf will look to max axes first and try and poke. Harass with your q and stun along with auto attacks then e away. He can't chase unless he hits his axes.

VS

Pantheon

Hard

Max e, only use your e when he throws a q. If you can tank his e with q and you do not get poked down, then this lane will not be a problem. He sets up ganks very well and call mia when he roams.

VS

Quinn

Hard

Extremely hard. Max e and only go on her if she burns her vault. Other then that try and play safe. Top quinn needs to be ganked to win that lane.

VS

Renekton

Medium

If Renekton has full rage, let him zone you. Do not get close to him. His 3 procs with his stun does so much damage and allows for a free auto attack and a q. Look to go on him with q and w whenever possible and e out when he tries to use his q.

VS

Rengar

Medium

Try and stun him when he jumps out of the bush to last hit a minion. Don't let him widdle you down by him just jumping out of the bush. Go closer to the river and try and follow where you think he might jump to last hit. Fairly easy once you get ahead. Never fight him with full stacks. Rengar will out damage Riven.

VS

Rumble

Easy

Get an early Hexdrinker. He will push the lane pretty hard with his q. When he last hits early around level 2-3 try and fight him. Riven also has a massive power spike at level 6 and can easily kill Rumble.

VS

Ryze

Easy

Just zone him. Don't let him get close to farm and use e to block his q. If he spams his abilities to try and get you away he will be oom. Fight whenever he uses Rune Prison.

VS

Shyvana

Medium

Shyv does a lot of damage, do not under estimate her. Look to poke her down as much as possible and all in her at 6. Your powerspike is a stronger then hers.

VS

Singed

Easy

Poke him when he last hits minions. Make sure you save your e to run away before he throws you behind him. Focus on last hitting and farming and all in at 4 and 6. Max Q is smart but e is to play safe.

VS

Sion

Easy

You should never get caught in his q. Save your e for his knockup or when he tries to fling a minion at you. Play aggressive early and kill him at 6.

VS

Tahm Kench

Hard

Never let Tahm get his 3 procs and eat you. Riven has enough mobility to never let that happen. Poke him as much as possible and kill him after 6. Stand behind minions unless you are going to fight him. Still think one of the strongest counters to Riven at the moment.

VS

Taric

Easy

Haha, ya, really, Taric top... At this point remember to surrender at 20. Taric op. A taric main will not ever miss a stun.

VS

Teemo

Medium

Max e, never fight when he blinds you. Just attack him whenever his q is down and your cooldowns are up. Start e and farm safely until 3.

VS

Trundle

Medium

Use you q and w in combination as much as possible. If he q's you, he takes some of your attack damage. Back off if he does, you will lose any trade following.

VS

Tryndamere

Medium

Very fun match up, Riven destroys Tryn pre-6. After 6, it all depends when Riven uses her ultimate. If she baits Tryn ult before she ults, then Riven wins. If Tryn ults and gets Riven's ultimate, there is a good chance you are going to die. Ignite would be good in this lane but I still prefer TP.

VS

Wukong

Easy

Whenever he dashes to you, immediately fight him. He will clone but follow him and try to deal as much damage as possible. Punish him for trying to poke early. a

VS

Yasuo

Easy

Do not miss your stun, it is vital in killing him. Try and bait him wind wall before throwing your ultimate. This is an easy lane. Zone him from farm pre-6 and after 6 zone him from farm. Easy enough.

VS

Yorick

Hard

Nah. Just no. Max e and try and survive lane. He out sustains you and will be able to get away whenever you engage on him. Just try and make it out of laning phase and do best to farm under turret. Push if possible.

Background Back to Top

I started played League of Legends around mid Season 4. I have not been playing that long compared to other people around my elo. However, I did love Riven the first time and played her and have been playing her nonstop to be the best player I can be. The first time I played ranked in Season 4, I was placed Bronze 3. I gave up ranked for a while and only did normals. The last month I tried ranked again with my new favorite champ Riven and went on a 15 game win streak and finished Silver 2. Season 5 I started Gold V after promos and Made it to Plat V after 56 games. I held a 61 % win rate. I would consider myself a Riven main and while I get ridiculed a lot, I do love Riven and will keep getting better and better. I'm going for diamond in Season 6 and I believe that if I had enough time I would have been able to do it this season. Let me know if I can ever help anyone. Thanks for reading my guide.

Laning Phase Back to Top

Riven has one of the strongest laning phases in the game. Depending on the matchup, try and play aggressive unless against a ranged champion or a mage. Once level 6, there are few champions in the game that can kill you in a 1 v 1. Riven excels at 2 v 1's when she is ahead while her AoE damage and AoE stun. Save ultimate unless you are almost about to die or it is your last chance to kill someone. Most likely if summoners think they are going to die they will try and flash Riven ult. Be patient and wait, they will try and do anything to try and live.

Animation Canceling Back to Top

The thing that makes Riven so powerful isn't just that she deals a lot of damage, it is her ability to Animation Cancel. Animation Canceling is what makes a good Riven Player became a great Riven player. To master Riven, you must learn to master animation canceling. Lets talk about animation canceling.

Animation canceling helps to deal all of Riven's damage in her combo in a shorter period of time. This has a few benefits to dealing damage in a shorter period of time.
1. Allow more damage while the target is CC'd either from teammate's CC, third q on Broken Wings, or Ki Burst.
2. Allows Riven to burst time a carry on the opposing team faster then they can react allowing for an increased chance on Riven being able to get away and survive.

What truly is an Animation Cancel?
If we think about Riven's auto attack, she swings her blade across her body, deals damage, then finishes swinging her sword. What Animation Canceling does, she after the damage is dealt, we activate one of our abilities so we don't have to finish the animation of her finishing swinging her sword. This allows Riven to get off her passive on each auto attack in between her using an ability.

Combos Back to Top

There are a few combos that is beneficial in Animation Canceling. Not only can you animation cancel the rest of RIven's auto attack, you can also animation cancel the animation on her abilities. If you activate Riven's ultimate for instance, there is a cast time on it. If you do some of the tips and combos below, you can make it so there is no animation for her ultimate and it looks like it just spawns out of no where.

Broken Wings (Q) Ki Burst (W) Valor (E) Blade of the Exile (R) Auto Attacking (aa)

Basic Combo using E-R-Q (This combo allows Riven to cancel the animation of her ultimate)
Using Riven's E, she can cancel the animation on any of her abilities if done right. The main combo starts off by using her e, immediately proceeding you hit your r, and immediately proceeding that you hit your q. If done correctly, this allows you to get same distance as you would hitting your Q and E but allows you to spawn your Blade of the Exile without waiting for a cast time.

E-W-Q
Riven can use her e then immediately use her w to stun her original location and travel along and stunning next to her with what looks like one animation. This tool is great for ganks when she can dash out of a bush, stun the enemy jungler and use her q to cancel her e animation while the e animation canceled her w animation.

Main Combo (This is used when all cooldowns are up and looking to deal your entire kits damage)
E-R-Q-aa-Q-aa-W-aa-Q-aa-R-aa... then follow up with aa until your e is back up or you kill them. Right now, the ultimate is an execute, meaning the lower health they are, the more damage it does.

A few others Combos that are a bit more advances and not as seen is her ability to canceling her second part of her ultimate. Remembering the E-R-Q combo you can do the same thing with the second part. Advanced Riven players will dash using e, throw ultimate, and then activate q after using 2 two times and get her to jump in the air while her ultimate is being throw dealing a ton of damages while also knocking up the target. This leads to another animation cancel at 40% cooldowns.
E-R-Q-aa-W-aa-Q-aa-E-R-Q-aa-aa-aa

Wall Jumping Back to Top

Wall Jumping is another advanced trick that can make a Riven player a master. Lets talk about Riven's Q for a second. Her first two uses of q allow her to dash for in the direction she is in if the cursor is not over an enemy champion. If on the third use of her q it is activated next to a wall or turret, and the range of her q is over half way through the middle of the structure, she will jump over it. This is an interesting mechanic that relates to Nidalee's pounce while in Cougar form. This allows Riven, when used correctly, to be able  to jump over buff walls, Baron Pit, Dragon pit, Towers, Base Walls, Walls in the jungle, and a few walls in the river by Baron. Wall Jumping allows Riven to escape where most champions could only use flash to get over.

Tip 1 to jumping over a wall.
1. Use one proc of q (first use)
2. Get near a wall and face towards it
3. Activate q again (second use) (This default will set Riven in position to jump the wall. This will dash her in position to be as close to the wall that needs to be.)
4. Activate q (third use) and jump over the wall.
IF RIVEN's Q's RANGE IS NOT MORE THAN HALF OVER THE WALL, THE WALL CANNOT BE JUMPED For instance, the wall that gromp is facing cannot be jumped if you try to jump it. Riven's range on her q is not more than half way through the wall.

Tip 2 for jumping over a wall (Uses E to put Riven in the correct direction to jump over.
1. Activate q (first use)
2. Activate q(second use)
3. Activate e and aim it towards the wall you want to jump over and hit q (third use) when you are just about to hit the side of the wall

If Riven clicks the other side of the wall before jumping, she will change directions since Riven will then find the fastest way to get to that spot by walking. I repeat, you must click as close to the wall you are gonna jump if you are gonna jump over it. Ff you click over the wall to try and set direction, Riven will change direction based on game mechanics and find the fastest route to get there. It will take some practicing. Do it in a custom game.

New Riven Changes in PBE Back to Top

At the moment, I personally feel these changes will buff Riven. I do not feel that Riven's ultimate was her problem. Adding edge could only hurt her ultimate and only buff her other abilities. With this in mind, I think Riven will be perma-banned at a higher elo. Bonus 10% will be too strong and won't be noticed since getting to 100 edge won't be a problem. Probably not coming up.
