Summoner Spells Back to Top

4.png Flash is a must on Riven. It is usefull engaging, escaping and increases your outplay potencial.

12.png The most common and safe option in the top lane. It will allow you to go back to base more often without loosing too many creeps. You should also use this summoner if you want to splitpush more. Please, if you run teleport make sure you use it, either to create opportunities or simply to go back to lane.

14.png Since you have a lot of kill pressure it is nice to run ignite. It assures you secure the kills that will let you snowball the game. Actually really good now top lane since it makes you that litle bit more scary and can make the difference between getting or not fed.

3.png Exaust can be good when you are facing someone that can deal you a lot of damage and you have troube fighting (106.png23.png238.png)

1.png Cleanse is usefull if the enemy team has a lot of cc.

Masteries Back to Top

This is the way to go. Since Fervor as been buffed you can fully stack it with only your Q combo (it takes you 4 AA). If you are a newer Riven player you might not realize this but most of your damage comes from you AA and not your abilities so it's only natural that you take Fervor of Battle.

Thunderlord's Decree is good if you are against a very squishy champion or team that you want to burst down. So I would say it's not as appropriate for instance to a tank meta since it's damage is meaningless against most match ups you face top lane. It also enables 45% CDR Riven which you might be a fan of and I understand why.

If you need to be more tanky Courage of the colossus is amazing. You can proc it with your W or your third Q and gives and instant shield along with your E. Makes you much more harder to kill with the set of masteries you can take in the resolve tree (unyelding, fearless, legendary guardian) and allows you to be a good initiator for your team.

NOTE:

At the moment TDC is very strong since the lethality buid is so popular. Provides greater burst which is what lethality Riven seeks.

Since the nerf colossus is much weaker. I never use it.

There are two diferent path's on how to  scale riven's abilities. Q-E-W or E-W-Q.

Q-E-W is the standard, most commonly used path. It gives you more burst damage and more reliable damage. Normally in a winning game you go for this because it is good for snowballing your lane. I recommend this path.

E-W-Q is an alternative way to scale Riven. It gives you much more mobility and many more stuns. Good scaling against match ups you need your E very often like80.png. It is however harder to play because basically all your damage comes from AA, so If you want to use this Fervor is definitly the way to go.

Remember that scaling Q only increases its damage while scaling W and E decrease their cooldowns.

Items Explanation!

1036.png2003.png This is your go to in most of the games. 3 Potions and a long sword that can build into 3133.png.

1055.png2003.png More aggressive start. You are better at 1vs1. If it goes wrong it helps to have 12.pngso you can quick heal. 14.png is also good if you want gain lane dominance.
1054.png2003.png This is a slow start. Use it if you expect an hard lane. If you buy this it means you are not expecting to stomp the lane so it doesnt make much sense to use 14.png, you should take 12.png.

Core Items Build Order: (See above for Sustain Build)

1036.png2003.png - 3133.png - 1001.png - 3134.png - 3071.png - 3047.png/3111.png

3071.pngNo Question every game you want to rush Black Cleaver. It provides everything Riven wants. Damage, HP, CDR and the up to 30% bonus armor pen. This is where it all starts.

3047.png/3111.png After having acquired your Black Cleaver you need boots. This two are the ones I use. If I need armor I go tabi if I need MR I go Mercs. It's that simple.

3814.png  Very good item. Gives some MR which helps. The letality is all this build is about. Just adds to what you already have and the active is very good in certain games. Mostly if you are engaging for your team or facing someone that can just stop your all ins (18.png/4.png)

3053.png Really Really like this. Actually makes you really beefy along with guardian angel. Normally build it as my last item unless the enemy team has someone that really scares me. DON'T USE WITH 3156.png.

3026.png Amazing item on Riven. Gives good stats and a great passive for someone who wants to go in but is not that tanky.

I find this 5 items to be the ones that actually work every game. I don't go this build every time but It's always a good path.

One thing that you migh have noticed is that I use no lifesteal items. That is because I think the penetration build is better. You don't get to sustain but you get to duel everyone in the game and be a threat to everyone. If you go sustain Riven you won't be dealing as much damage to squishies and there is no way you will be killing tanks.

With that said if you prefer sustain Riven go for it, it's still very much viable and I will talk about what items you can buy.

3142.png Amazing item, most of my games i get it. Stacks with all the lethality you have and give the extra 10% CDR that you need.

3036.png/3033.png You need this if the enemy team has a lot of armor, too much for your lethality to handle. There will be no tanks, no one that can stand your damage. Even the 300 armor poppy will be hurt.

3156.png I build this if the enemy team is stacked with magic damage (3 or 4 magic damage dealers). Along with merc treds and Nigth's Veil you will be resisting a lot of the damage you are being dealt. It's like the 3053.png for an ap composition.

3742.pngThis is the armor item I normally use if I need more armor than tabi guardian angelor if I don't want guardian angel at all.

3102.pngVery situational but very good if the enemy team has a lot of magic damage. Goes well with 3156.png 3814.png 3111.png .

3812.png Very good item. Makes you even more tany, gives the extra CDR and some sustain.

3748.png If you want to be really tanky. Good if the enemyteamhas a lot of beefy targets. Not so good versus squishier teams.

If you want to go Lifesteal Riven You will need either Hydra or Blood. Let's Discuss:

3074.png  vs 3072.png

Big debate on Riven is what should you use, Hydra or Blood.

Hydra gives more burst, more wave clear and it helps in canceling your animations which is really importante on Riven. It also is easier to build since 3077.png is cheaper than 1038.png.

Bloodthirster gives you more AD, which increases your skill numbers, gives you more sustain and an amazing shield that synergizes really well with Riven. Instead of burst damage, bloodthirster gives you more damage over time.

So which one is the best?

I prefer hydra. Take skirmishes instead of full all-ins. You can easily go in, stun your target Q-basic-hydra  resulting in a favorable trade. The AoE from hydra is really useful, it helps with your wave clear so you can split push easier and it increases your fight's potencial since you can damage more targets. With the burst from Hydra's active you can easily one-shot the squisher targets in the enemy team and provides potencial for 1vs2 situations. You can also chain it in your combo really easily. Plus it looks neat!

If you prefer Bloodthirster go for it. It really is a matter of preference and playstyle!

3812.png If you are looking for sustain on Riven this is one of the best Items. I take it alongside Hydra. It gives a lot of a damage, CDR and heal with your abilities, which is just perfect.

Item Build Set for Susatain Riven (example):

3111.png/3047.png - 3071.png - 3074.png - 3812.png

Once you have Black Cleaver(1st item) and death's dance/3rd item) you have 40%CDR and a lot of sustain so you are good to go. After that you can get some tanky items, sustain or 3036.png. It's up to you. See Item list and choose.

In order to win you must block her E. The easier way is to stun her when you see her E animation starting. You can also stun her once she reaches the wall. Don't go for full all ins fights, she will out damage you.

Cho'Gath

Is silence fucks you up is ult hurts a lot.

VS

Darius

Tricky match-up!

In order to win you have to know how to lane against Darius in general! Riven does have good tools to deal with him.

Make sure you dont get hit by his Q in the tip as it hurts more and you start bleeding.

Be carefull how is heal works. Don't let him heal of you as you will loose the trade badly.

Once you start having too many bleed counters run away from him. Be carefull for his pull.

Ganking him helps but you must be careful as well. The heal he gets is really massive and can turn everything around.

Skill matchup in her favor!

Fiora's kit has a bit of everything so it's really hard to play against her.

In order to win you must bait out her W. If do it you prob win the trade, if not you get stomped. Dont just let her Q you the whole lanning phase without a payback but be very carefull the way you try to figth her. Remember, if she counter stuns you you're probably dead.

After 6, if you have your ulti on and avoid her W you win the trade and can kill her. If you have no ulti you loose bad.

Tip: Hug a wall, don't let her proc the 4 vitals as the healing is huge and the damage insane aswell.

Abuse him. Your kite allows you to do it so abuse this guy. Dont let him farm. Either push the lane to his turret so he cant stack the Q or just freeze and fight him once he comes for cs. The penetration helps once he starts getting tankier.

Olaf

Pantheon

Poppy

Hard
Poppy is your biggest counter because she can negate a lot of your mobility with her W. Tanky from level 1 to 18. A lot of base damage so fighting her early is not the best idea.

If she stuns you during lanning phase you gonna have a problem. Avoid the second Q damage.

VS

Renekton

Hard
Hard matchup. Not as hard as poppy. He doesn't counter you as she does but this guy is a lane bully and if you are against a good renekton you can feel it.

DONT FIGHT him when he has is fury stacked up.

If he has 0 fury you can try to fight him. Once you have Black Cleaver and tabis you win.

Really hard to face. Realy tanky, a lot of sustain and damage. His pilar can stop your third Q. Dont fight when he uses his ulti.

I don't think there is a point the game when you eventually outscale him and can beat him in a 1vs1, unless you are fed.

VS

Tryndamere

Hard
Very easy up to level 6. If you trade correctly you can easily kill him. At 6 thou is ult is really annoying and playing around it sometimes is not that easy. Just remember when fighting him that during 4 second he wont die.

He also has an annoying playstyle constantly splitting and taking your top lane.

VS

Vladimir

Easy

VS

Volibear

Hard
Don't even try fighting him. He goes for HP so the letality is not as effective aginst him. His passive is super annoying, when you think you can kill him it just starts regening and there is nothing you can do. His bite deal a lot. Just try to stay safe.
