Summoner Spells Back to Top

12.pngTeleport gives you more map pressure and can help you stay in lane against some losing match ups. Teleport also enables teleport ganks, split pushing strategies, and the occasional backdooring the nexus. You should always take teleport on Riven unless you are not used to it.

3.png14.png Exhaust and ignite are okay too if you don't want to take teleport. These summoners give greater dueling potential and kill pressure in lane and in duels.

Masteries Back to Top

6362.pngThunderlord's One Shot Combo Page:

6114.png Sorcery is better when building lethality as you are looking to 1 shot or combo champions.

6121.png Typically riven combos always involve at least one auto attack so Fresh Blood can add more damage to your combo.

6131.png Riven can obtain a lot of healing through Vampirism as Riven's kit allows her to make use of its effects very easily. This is due to Riven's heavy aoe damage. Vampirism, like Feast. also helps Riven sustain through lane.

6141.png Bounty Hunter can raise Riven's damage cap significantly and will allow you to snowball much easier. If you take teleport on Riven, consider running this mastery as you can gain stacks when teleport ganking. If Riven is winning lane, you can also push in the lane and look for roams or invade the enemy jungler which can all get you stacks for Bounty Hunter.

6312.png Helps you last hit and clear waves more efficiently.

6323.png Assassin is great for most top laners as you are alone most of the time especially if you plan to split push. Also if you're going for a lethality build the name's kinda fitting i guess.

6331.png Merciless is great because it's free damage and 6332.pngMeditation isn't all that great on Riven.

6342.png Bandit is good for trading and can net to a lot of gold later on.

6352.png Intelligence and 6351.png Precision are both great masteries for Riven. I personaly prefer Intelligence because having more cdr simply feels better because Riven is only limited by her cooldowns since she doesn't require energy or mana. Intelligence removes some of these limitations while Precision will offer more flat armor penetration. It can be argued that having a higher cdr technically gives more damage if you use the same abilities more than once in a fight which is why I prefer Intelligence over Precision.

6362.png Thunderlord's is easily activated through Riven's attacks and abilities. This mastery gives free damage and a higher damage 1 shot combo.

6162.png Fervor Duelist Juggernaut Page.

6111.png Fury is better when taking 6162.pngFervor with a more standard riven build with 3812.pngDeath's Dance and 3071.pngBlack Cleaver as your core. Going this route is usually better vs tanky champions (i.e. malphite, cho'gath) or other extended dueling champions (i.e. jax, irelia).

6122.png  Feast can help you sustain through lane and stay healthy. Especially useful in losing match ups in case you make some bad trades.

6131.png Riven can obtain a lot of healing through Vampirism as Riven's kit allows her to make use of its effects very easily. This is due to Riven's heavy aoe damage. Vampirism, like Feast. also helps Riven sustain through lane.

6143.png Battle Trance is a very good option for dueling and prolonged fights which this path strives to do.

6312.png Helps you last hit and clear waves more efficiently.

6323.png Assassin is great for most top laners as you are alone most of the time especially if you plan to split push.

6331.png Merciless is great because it's free damage and 6332.pngMeditation isn't all that great on Riven.

6342.png Bandit is good for trading and can net to a lot of gold later on.

TL;DR R>Q>W>E

Your riventricleave.pngQ ability is Riven's bread and butter and should be maxed first for the boost in damage.

rivenmartyr.pngW is maxed second as putting points into it will increase its damage and cooldown granting you a higher damage combo.

rivenfeint.pngE is maxed last even though putting points into it lowers its cooldown and increases its shield strength, it doesn't do anything for increased damage output.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Core Items

Situational Items

For most match ups you will want to start with 1036.pngLong Sword and 2031.pngRefillable Potion. 1054.pngDoran's Shield is great vs champions that can easily and continuously poke you (i.e. Pantheon).

There really isn't a gold threshold Riven should reach for each back to base as much of her build is built around 1036.pngLong Sword, so if you have some left over gold, just purchase some long swords.

Ideally, you will want to build these 1036.pngLong Swords into your 3134.pngSerrated Dirk and 3133.pngCaulfield's Warhammer into 3147.pngDuskblade as soon as possible. Duskblade makes up a lot of the damage of Riven's combo and should be rushed first.

3142.pngYoumuu's Ghostblade is also easily built into as it is built from 1036.pngLong Swords, and should be built second and 3814.pngEdge of Night right after. These 3 items will be Riven's core build with situational items built accordingly to how ahead you are in the game and your opposing team's champion picks.

If you are running 10% cdr at level 18 runes, purchasing an 3158.pngIonian Boots of Lucidity will cap off your cdr at 40%. If you don't run bonus cdr runes, you can purchase either 3047.pngNinja Tabi(vs heavy AD/autoattackbased), or 3111.pngMercury's Treads(vs heavy AP/lots of CC).

3036.pngLord Domnik's can be purchased for high hp tank's without healing (i.e. Malphite)

3033.pngMortal Reminder is for champions with a lot of healing (i.e. Vladimir, Swain, Zac).

The armor penetration from these two items will give you a lot of bonus damage especially in the late game when your opponents have itemized for some armor against you.

3026.pngGuardian Angel or 3053.pngSterak's Gage is a great filler item if you don't really know what else to buy.

3140.pngQuicksilver Sash can counter champions with strong CC. Riven has a lot of counterplay to skill shot based CC as her riventricleave.pngQ and rivenfeint.pngE can be used to dodge abilities or put herself out of range of these abilities. QSS can still be purchased as a back up or for those with select ability CC (i.e. Malzahar).

VS champions with knock up or knock back abilities, 3140.pngQSS can be purchased to negate these abilties as well. When knocked up or knocked away, use QSS and then follow it up with your rivenfeint.pngE to negate the effect. It is necessary to use your rivenfeint.pngE as using 3140.pngQSS alone will not free you from the knock up effect.

If you didn't take 10% cdr at lvl 18 glyphs and purchase 3158.pngIonian Boots of Lucidity, you can purchase a 3071.pngBlack Cleaver for max cdr.

Usually if I'm outrageously ahead, I'll buy 3157.png Zhonya's for a pose after I 1 shot somone.

VS

Aatrox

Medium
Suggested Build: 3047.png3147.png3142.png3814.png3033.png3026.png
Keystone: 6362.png

Can be an easy match up, but if you screw up Aatrox can potentially kill you. Don't let him get ahead or Aatrox will be unkillable.

VS

Akali

Easy
Suggested Build: 3158.png3147.png3142.png3814.png3026.png3033.png
Keystone: 6362.png

Very easy match up. Akali can't do anything vs a Riven, her ranged akalimota.pngQ harass is negated by Riven's shield. If she tries to trade with her 2nd akalimota.pngQ or akalishadowswipe.pngE, Riven can all in and deal much more damage than Akali can. If Akali sticks in herakalismokebomb.pngW, Riven's aoe abilities can still deal damage.

VS

Cho'Gath

Medium
Suggested Build: 3111.png3071.png3812.png3036.png3026.png3139.png
Keystone: 6162.png

Avoid Cho'Gath's rupture.pngQ at all costs. You will instantly lose the trade if he lands this on you as he can follow it up with his feralscream.pngW and damage from his vorpalspikes.pngE. If you can dodge his rupture.pngQ and especially Cho'Gath's feralscream.pngW, Cho will have little counterplay against you and he will likely have to 4.pngFlash away to not die to your following engage.

VS

Darius

Hard
Suggested Build: 3047.png3071.png3812.png3033.png3026.png3143.png
Keystone: 6162.png

Be very careful when laning against Darius. In a straight 1v1, Darius will usually win trades and can severely punish you if you have no abilities off cooldown.

The best way to play a trade is:

riventricleave.pngQ in, Auto Attack, rivenmartyr.pngW, rivenfeint.pngE out,  riventricleave.pngQ out.

VS

Garen

Hard
Suggested Build: 3047.png3071.png3812.png3036.png3026.png3143.png
Keystone: 6162.png

Garen is a difficult opponent to trade against as his garenq.pngQ silence prevents you from dealing damage properly. Garen's garene.pngE ability cannot be interrupted even through CC, so you have to counter it with your rivenfeint.pngE or dashing out of range.

The best way to trade against Garen is to hit a max range 3rd riventricleave.pngQ, rivenmartyr.pngW, then auto attack, rivenfeint.pngE out. If you come from a bush, you can 2nd riventricleave.pngQ, rivenmartyr.pngW, auto attack, 3rd riventricleave.pngQ, auto attack, rivenfeint.pngE out. Being able to kite Garen is key in this match up.

VS

Irelia

Medium
Suggested Build: 3047.png3071.png3812.png3033.png3026.png3143.png
Keystone: 6162.png

A very even match up. It's played much like the Jax match up. Irelia may have the initiative to win duels if she can stun you with her E.

VS

Jarvan IV

Medium
Suggested Build: 3047.png3071.png3812.png3036.png3026.png3143.png
Keystone: 6162.png

This match up mainly depends on your skill as a Riven player. Riven can easily bully Jarvan especially if you can get close to him, Riven will always outdamage Jarvan. Because you naturally win the all in, Jarvan will try to poke you with his Q in lane until he can chip you away to a killable health threshold. You can combat this by blocking his Q with your rivenfeint.pngE. There is a small window for you to be able to react to his Q as his Q is not instant. When Jarvan uses his Q to poke you, it can also be a potential moment to trade as he cannot EQ during this moment.

If Jarvan attempts to EQ you, pay attention to where the flag lands and do your best to avoid the path from Jarvan to the flag. Should you dodge this ability, Jarvan will basically have nothing left to fight you with and you will win the trade or even kill him.

VS

Jax

Medium
Suggested Build: 3047.png3071.png3812.png3036.png3026.png3143.png
Keystone: 6162.png

Very even match up. Usually the person who engages on the other will lose. Much like the Irelia match up. Watch out for Jax's E ability. If it's off cooldown you will have the advantage in trades.

VS

Jayce

Medium
Suggested Build: 3047.png3147.png3142.png3814.png3026.png3036.png
Keystone: 6362.png

Jayce can be a lane bully for Riven, but if you don't let Jayce kill you pre-6, you will surely outscale. If Jayce get's too close to you, you can go in for trades, but save some abilties to get away from him. Never blatantly all in Jayce unless you can combo him. Jayce's jaycethunderingblow.pngE can allow him to disengage and run away. Jayce is therefore vulnerable to flanks if you can position yourself that way.

VS

Kayle

Easy
Suggested Build: 3158.png3147.png3142.png3814.png3026.png3033.png
Keystone: 6362.png

Very easy match up. If you can get close without using too many abilities, you can make very efficient trades. You will always outdamage Kayle once you are on top of her. Do not make the mistake of burning all of your abilties to gap close and then only be left with a rivenmartyr.pngW once you reach her.

VS

Kled

Easy
Suggested Build: 3047.png3071.png3812.png3033.png3026.png3143.png
Keystone: 6162.png
Don't let Kled get ahead or you gonna have a bad time.
Generally Riven will win the 1v1 game if you go even in cs. If Kled messes up Riven can easily punish and easily stay on top of Kled as Kled usually has a hard time getting away.

VS

Maokai

Hard

Suggested Build: 3111.png3071.png3812.png3036.png3109.png3026.png

Keystone: 6162.png

Maokai can easily lock you down with his maokaiw.pngW and maokair.pngR snares and maokaiq.pngQ knock back. These abilities can prevent Riven from using her abilities and in teamfights shut her down very easily.

Laning against Maokai isn't as difficult 1v1 as your kit offers much more damage than Maokai's. However, be careful of ganks as it can be very hard to get away from Maokai once he's on top of you.

VS

Pantheon

Hard
Suggested Build: 3047.png3147.png3142.png3814.png3026.png3036.png
Keystone: 6362.png

This can be a very oppressive match up for Riven. Definitely start 1054.pngDoran's Shield against Pantheon. Start rivenfeint.pngE to negate Pantheon's Q. Pre-6 just do your best to farm and only trade if Pantheon severely messes up. Once you are lvl 6, you can likely all in Pantheon. If you get a kill before Pantheon does you will have won the lane.

VS

Renekton

Hard
Suggested Build: 3047.png3071.png3812.png3033.png3026.png3143.png
Keystone: 6162.png

If Renekton lands his renektonpreexecute.pngW without you shielding it. You will likely lose a significant portion of your hp as Renekton can then combo you with his following abilities. Because of this, Renektons will likely try to zone you away from minions and should you approach he'll just use his renektonpreexecute.pngW on you. In this match up, wave control is very important as Renekton can zone several waves away from you if you push in incorrectly.

VS

Singed

Medium
Suggested Build: 3047.png3071.png3812.png3033.png3026.png3143.png
Keystone: 6162.png

Very difficult to kill as Singed can escape from you very easily should you try to engage him. This is due to Singed's fling.pngE as you cannot escape its range once you go for a trade. Also, Singed's megaadhesive.pngW grounds enemies, so you won't be able to use any dashes inside of it.

VS

Teemo

Easy
Suggested Build: 3158.png3147.png3142.png3814.png3026.png3033.png
Keystone: 6362.png

Very much like the Kayle match up, try to get on top of Teemo without burning too many abilities. Try not to get kited through teemorcast.pngMushrooms.

VS

Tryndamere

Easy
Suggested Build: 3047.png3147.png3142.png3814.png3026.png3033.png
Keystone: 6362.png

Tryndamere is a very squishy target, but you have to be careful of his R. Riven should be able to 100-0 Tryndamere with a combo, but if Tryndamere uses his R, you will have to kite him. Tryndamere can potentially kill you if you have nothing to get away and he can escape with his life if you can't gap close once his ulti runs out. Tryndamere can potentially outscale you, but pre-6 Riven will have the advantage in lane.

VS

Yasuo

Easy
Suggested Build: 3047.png3147.png3142.png3814.png3026.png3033.png
Keystone: 6362.png

Do your best to bully Yasuo in lane. Save your rivenfeint.pngE to block Yasuo's Q when fighting. If you find an early kill on Yasuo you can easily snowball the lane out of control. Yasuo's main counterplay against Riven is through your minions. A good Yasuo can kite Riven through her own minion wave. Try not to waste any abilities as in try not to use your riventricleave.pngQ to gap close if you can as it's more optimal to use your riventricleave.pngQ to deal damage instead. If you waste all your abilities and haven't dealt enough damage to Yasuo to execute him, then you will lose the fight.
