Summoner Spells Back to Top

180.png

4.png12.png 'The most used'

12.png Is the optimal choice for riven. It enables so many option like roaming bot, tping back to lane if you have troubles and also enables you to splitpush in later stage of the game.

179.png

4.png14.png 'I am getting fed'

14.png Is still fine IF you know what you are doing. You have to WIN lane, you have to BE CAREFUL to ganks and you also HAVE to get fed.

127.jpg

New Runes Back to Top

 180.png

Riven got pretty screwed by the rune changes. Losing fervor without a good replacement made her pretty weak vs tanks. Also tank toplaners have really good keystone nowadays. Anyway without further talks

Summon%20Aerie.png?width=64 Aery

While still viable, after the next patch Aery is no more the indiscussed best option for riven.

The%20Ultimate%20Hat.png?width=32 Pretty usefull since you rely a lot on your ult

Transcendence.png?width=32 Pretty usefull because it has a good rateo convert CDR>AD. Let you overcap the cdr that is also a good thing since sometimes you really want that maw+cleaver+deathdance etc.

Magical%20Footwear.png?width=32 Basically 350 gold for free, also riven dosn't really rely on boots

Cosmic%20Insight.png?width=32 Pretty good all around

179.png

Electrocute.png?width=64 Electrocute

This is the best option if you are looking to oneshot enemies single target. Since riven is being played more and more with lethality glass cannon build this keystone.

This tree also gives you another burst of lethality with Sudden%20Impact.png?width=32 aswell as giving you lane control with Zombie%20Ward.png?width=32.

Precision as second tree gives you the even more damage with Coup%20De%20Grace.png?width=32 and more survivability with Triumph.png?width=32

179.png

Summoner%20Specialist.png?width=64Unsealed Spellbook

So this is most an experimental try. Adrianaries (one trick riven main) is trying it out recently with some success. I can't really give you much details but i want to suggest you to try this out. Start with ignite and eventually swap for tp.

riventricleave.png Q Or rivenfeint.png E lv 1?

riventricleave.png Is better for invades and is also better if you need to leash for your jungler
rivenfeint.png Is better in some matchups when you will be harrassed since lv 1 (e.g. 80.png 41.png 126.png)
riventricleave.png Is the stronger option to trade so take it if you are looking either to push or to trade lv1

Pick your first skill point accordingly to the matchup and to your level of confidence

179.png

rivenfeint.png More points into E?

If you are looking to survive a tough lane when you are being bullied, you can decide to put from 3 to 5 points into E early on. This will reduce the cooldown and also increase the numember of the shield. Be really carefull because you will be a lot weaker damagewise.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Core Items

    Solid itembuild

Situational Items

lethality oneshot build (last 2 items are optional, you can also skip the edge of the night)
    Some good items
180.png

Starting items

1054.png Doran's Shield

Pretty usefull vs matchup when you expect to get harrassed a lot. (80.png 85.png 150.png ecc..)

1055.png Doran's Blade

If you feel confident with starting only with one 2003.png1055.png gives you the best stat for straight up 1v1

1036.png Long Sword

This is probably the best option if you wanna trade a lot. 3x2003.png give you the option to take some bad trades and still not be completely forced out of lane

179.png

Core items

3071.png & 3812.png

Those 2 items will be your core items 90% of the time. Which one to build first and even the component you wanna build first depends on your playstyle and your matchup.

3071.png Has a really awful build path since you get almost no ad from 3044.png and 3067.png. You might still wanna rush it if you really need its passive.

3812.png Has better components but gives you not hp which you will need in some matchups.
3133.png > 3044.png > 3812.png > 3067.png > 3071.png

Or

3133.png > 3044.png > 3067.png > 3071.png > 3812.png

Are examples of mixed buildpath that are decent for riven.

179.png

 Good Items

3035.png Solid buy on riven, might be a bit useless if you are vs an all squishy team
3074.png Pretty solid 3/4th item, gives you higher damage in ranked and also gives you more burst into your combos
3142.png Good item if you are looking to roam or to oneshot/instaengage on someone
3139.png Solid buy, Riven suffers ccs a lot
3156.png Solild buy, i would suggest to rush atleast 3155.png in somematchups
3123.png You can rush this item vs heavy healing based champion like 36.png50.png
3748.png Again pretty solid 3/4th item, gives you more damage in teamfight but also some tankyness
3814.png Good item if you are going for the lethality oneshot build
3147.png Read above
3026.png Great item on riven, almost a must buy in every fullbuild
3053.png Decent item if you really need some more tankyness
3072.png Usually the other lifesteal item are valued higher on riven but if you really want it, it's not a bad buy

VS

Aatrox

Medium

Aatrox is an ad fighter. Most of his damage comes from autos. This is a decent matchup for riven, it gets really bad IF you fall behind

  • Level 1 he is stronger than you so avoid fights
  • Level 3 is where you start to shine
  • Short trade with him only, he has sustain while you do not
  • Dodge his aatroxe.png
  • His aatroxq.png has a long cd. If he wastes it you can go on and trade him
  • You can easilyu interrupt his aatroxq.png with your 3rd riventricleave.png or rivenmartyr.png
  • Try to use your cc to interrupt his autos

VS

Akali

Medium

So akali is a weird matchup, you have the upper end pre 6 and after 6 this matchup gets more difficoult and tricky

  • You can either play hyper aggro on her or really safe (waiting for your items)
  • If you play hyper aggro you need to do it constantly or she will regen hp on minions with her passive
  • Level 6 is where this matchup gets tricky simple as that you either kill her or she kills you.
  • Try ask for early ganks, if you snowball early there's no way for her to comeback
Early important items : 3155.png

VS

Camille

Medium

This is mostly a skillmatchup where i think camille has the upper end. If camille is good there's really little you can do other than farm and scale.

  • You can dodge his camillee.png with your rivenfeint.png riventricleave.png
  • If at level 6 she's 70% hp or less you could go for an all in.
  • Be carefull because she gets untargettable for a brief moment upon casting camiller.png so she can potentially dodge your rivenfengshuiengine.png

VS

Cho'Gath

Medium
Cho is a weird matchup, you can kinda abuse him early on but after he gets some items he will be kinda unkillable.

You might wanna ask your jungler to gank early on, if you set him behind enough he will be a frekill for the whole lanephase.

VS

Darius

Medium

Darius is a skill matchup, riven has the tools to make the lane a living hell for him BUT you need to make no mistake.

  • Avoid the external part of his dariuscleave.png (most of the time it's pretty usefull to rivenfeint.png towards him when he dariuscleave.png since you will take only 35% of the damage and he won't gain a passive stack on you)
  • riventricleave.png > Auto > rivenfeint.pngrivenmartyr.png (CAST THE TOGHETER) out is a nice trade way to short trade him, you won't get pulled back dariusaxegrabcone.png because he will be stunned and you will be already far after the dash
  • Be carefull when using your 3rdriventricleave.png he can interrupt it with his dariusaxegrabcone.png negating you a fair chunk of damage

VS

Dr. Mundo

Easy

Mundo is an easy lane for riven, he has no mobility and you can actually trade him pretty easily early on.

  • At some point he will farm from far with his infectedcleavermissilecast.png. You can deny him by rivenfeint.png in front of the minion he's trying to last him
Suggested early item : 3123.png

VS

Fiora

Medium

This matchup is fun, rewarding and it's a skill matchup.

fioraw.png

This is the single skill that will make this matchup. You NEED to not be predicable with your ccs. So everytime you want to trade do different rotations. If she fioraw.png either your riventricleave.png or rivenmartyr.png you will lose the trade.

  • She is stronger than you level 1 because of her vitals, do not trade
  • You can reset her vitals by going out of sight so step into a bush or run away.
  • At level 6 you are pretty equal, if she gets all the vitals of her ult off tho you will have almost no chance of getting the upper hand

VS

Gangplank

Medium

Pretty easy matchup.

  • Lv 1 take rivenfeint.png and shield his gangplankqwrapper.png harrass
  • You can start trading consistently with him at lv 3
  • Be really carefull about hisgangplanke.png
  • You can 100/0 him at lv 6

VS

Garen

Easy

This should be an easy matchup because garen kit is so binary.

  • Do not trade lv1
  • Do not waste your cds when he uses his garenw.png
  • Keep your passive on cd by poking him
And that's about it, be carefull about his garenr.png it deals a more damage the lower hp you are

VS

Gnar

Medium

Gnar is a pain in the ass, and in order to win this matchup you really need to take care of his rage bar and his gnare.png cd.

  • Give up cs if you have to, you really don't want to play this lane on low hp
  • His gnare.png has a 22 seconds cd at rank 1. You can bait it out by engaging on him and it will still be down by the time your cds are back up, use that to your advantage
  • Do not trade with him when he's in mega.
  • At level 6 he is squishy and you can actually bait his gnare.png once and then all in on him

VS

Illaoi

Medium

This matchup is about your dodging skills.

  • Dodge her illaoiq.png
  • Dodge her illaoie.png (and if she does hit you immediatly go out of range)
  • If she illaoie.pngillaoir.png you don't even bother trading and back up
  • Clear her tentacles every time you have the chance to.
  • You can free trade with her if she wastes her illaoie.png
  • Q dancing (explained in the section below) is pretty usefull in this matchup so master it !

VS

Irelia

Medium

Irelia is a scary matchup for riven. Be really carefull about not taking long trade and about her cds.

  • Short trade her with riventricleave.png rivenmartyr.png auto rivenfeint.png riventricleave.png away
  • Be carefull because if she rushes a 3057.png she will have a lot of damage at level 6
  • Be carefull about her ireliaequilibriumstrike.png if she wastes it you are safe to trade.

VS

Jarvan IV

Medium

Jarvan is an annoying lane but as long as you don't take too much harrass it should be okay.

  • Dodge or try to shield his jarvanivdragonstrike.png harrass
  • His jarvanivdemacianstandard.png has 13 seconds cd, and it's the only way he can actually escape.
  • You can jump out of his jarvanivcataclysm.png with your rivenfeint.png
  • If you manage to dodge jarvanivdragonstrike.png and shield the damage of his empowered auto (passive) you should be winning the lane

VS

Jax

Medium

Jax is another matchup that relies on his ability to auto you.

  • Do not trade level 1, his jaxcounterstrike.png is actually pretty annoying and if you missplay and get stunned by it you will autolose the trade. Rather wait level 3 to start to trade
  • jaxcounterstrike.png his on 16 secs cooldown. Every time he has it down you can trade with him.
  • 3rd jaxrelentlessassault.png + jaxempowertwo.png + jaxleapstrike.png + 3057.png it's a lot of damage, so be carefull after level 6.
  • Try to cancel his auto by stunning him rivenmartyr.png at the right timing.

VS

Jayce

Hard

This is an HARD matchup and it is even HARDER if jayce is good.

  • Level one start rivenfeint.png shield damage and try to take exp for the wave
  • At level 3 you can start to trade with him but it will be hard, if you are able to farm and take exp don't even bother
  • At level 6 you can actually kill him if he carelessly change his stance form. jaycestancehtg.png has a 6 secs cooldown and if he's in ranged for he can't jaycethunderingblow.png to desengage you

VS

Kennen

Hard

Probably the HARDEST matchup for riven.

If he is pretty bad just spam engages on him, if it's not pray to god your jungler get some attention on your lane.

Lv 1 start rivenfeint.png and try to farm/take exp

VS

Kled

Medium

This matchup is actually fun to play.

  • Dodge his kledq.png
  • Let him use his kledw.png on creeps and trade only if it's on cd
  • Ping ss at level 6 if he's not in lane. His kledr.png can get him some pretty useful ganks on other lanes
  • Be carefull about his ragebar when he's unmounted

VS

Malphite

Easy

This is a pretty easy matchup, he has no mobility and has no ccs till level 6.

  • Start riventricleave.png level 1. If he starts landslide.png dodge it.
  • You can freely trade with him whenever his landslide.png is down.
  • Just keep trading him so his passive won't be a factor in the lane

VS

Maokai

Medium

Maokai is annoying do to his passive that let's him regenerate hp on his next auto after he uses abilities or is struck by some.

  • Generally play safe and short trade
  • Be really carefull because mao is a cc machine so the enemy jungler might camp you hard.
  • At level 6 he has no more damage reduction from his ult, so you can actually beat him in a 1v1.

VS

Mordekaiser

Medium

Mordekaiser is mostly unseen, the new runes aren't really that good on him.

  • mordekaisercreepingdeathcast.png carefull about his W healing, it can cost you trades. If he wastes it to push or farm, you are free to go
  • 3rdmordekaisermaceofspades.png deals a lot of damage be really carefull.
  • If he mordekaiserchildrenofthegrave.png you just run away, he has no way of sticking to you

VS

Nasus

Easy

I classify this matchup as easy, but it is easy only the first levels. After a while no matter what you do YOU WILL LOSE TO NASUS due to his nature of building full tank and stacking nasusq.png.

  • You need to abuse him EARLY on. Everytime he goes for a stack fast riventricleave.png him
  • Repeat every level keep pressure on him and try to not let him farm
  • Ask your jungler for help. Nasus has no escape tools so if you get ahead enough you can actually steamroll him

VS

Olaf

Medium

VS

Pantheon

Medium

This matchup is considered hard by a lot of player while it's not. At best pantheon can be REALLY ANNOYING. But it's manageable.

  • Start 1054.png
  • Start rivenfeint.png
  • Constantly shield his pantheonq.png
  • If you are having trouble keep maxing rivenfeint.png
  • Farm as much as you can and always keep distance.
  • rivenmartyr.png every time he uses his pantheone.png
  • His ultimate is useless 1v1 so you actually have the upper hand at level 6 rivenfengshuiengine.png

VS

Poppy

Medium

Fair matchup. A lot of ppl actually think that poppy hardcounter riven but it's not the case.

  • Start q level 1, let she waste her passive on minions and then trade her (while also dodging the second part for her poppyq.png)
  • Do not stand near walls
  • If you are inside her poppyw.png when she casts it simple don't do anything but autos and wait for it to expire

VS

Renekton

Hard

Renekton counters riven pretty hard.

  • Do not trade with him unless he wastes his cd/fury on creeps.
  • Build cleaver and tabi first.
  • Ask for you jungler to help you.
  • If he try to engage you just disengage

VS

Rumble

Medium

Fair match up but you can get in trouble if you don't trade/evaluate damage properly.

  • Take rivenfeint.png level one and avoid stupid trade
  • At level 3 you can actually start to trade more often
  • Take a look at his fury bar, be really carefull because his rumbleflamethrower.png can hurt you bad.
  • At level 6 do not waste all your dashes at one, you need to be able to get off his rumblecarpetbomb.png
  • If you played the matchup correctly you should be safe to all in him at 6 rivenfengshuiengine.png
Item to rush: 3155.png

VS

Singed

Medium

Should be an easy matchup unless you go behind.

  • Level 1 start riventricleave.png and trade himd
  • Level 2 get rivenfeint.png and keep trading him, possibly shield his fling.png damage with it.
  • At level 6 you can actually kill him but do not chase too much if you can't reach it

VS

Teemo

Medium

Teemo is annoying and painfull to play against but it's beatable.

  • Play safe early on and wait till level 3 to start to trade.
  • At level 6 you can actually kill him, let him waste his blindingdart.png and engage on him when it's on cd.
Item to rush: 3155.png

VS

Trundle

Medium

Trundle is actually hard to deal with because of his kit that gives him the perfect tools to fight him.

  • You can short trade him, but as soon as he hits youy with his trundletrollsmash.png just disengage.
  • Save your 3rd riventricleave.png to jump his trundlecircle.png
  • If he uses trundlepain.png just disengage unless he is already THAT low so you are able to instaburst him.

VS

Tryndamere

Medium

This matchup used to be easy with the 6361.png. Now i guess you will be taking Phase%20Rush.png?width=32

  • Do not trade until level 3
  • Only short trade him, his crit will hurt you in longer trade

VS

Wukong

Medium

Wukong is a fighter like you but you are stronger than him. Basically always trade with him and be really carefull on not watching skills/auto on his monkeykingdecoy.png.

Try to be careful level 6 because his monkeykingspintowin.png deals a lot of damage.

VS

Yasuo

Medium

Skill matchup that favors riven the most.

  • Do not trade level 1/2 he's just stronger.
  • Start to short trade him level 3. His yasuowmovingwall.png is useless against you
  • After level 6 it all relies on your ability to dodge his yasuoqw.png tornado, if you do you are bound to win.
  • Be really carefull and try to throw your ult when he is stunned by your rivenmartyr.png so he wont be able to block it with yasuowmovingwall.png

VS

Yorick

Medium

Yorick got super buffed by the new rune system, i still need to try out this matchup.

  • yoricke.png dodge hit or sidestep it, it's the most important part of this matchup
  • You can jump out his yorickw.png with your 3rd riventricleave.png

Riven's pros & Cons Back to Top

180.png

Pros

  • Fun to play
  • Challenging to play (one of the highest skill ceiling in the game if not the highest)
  • Snowbally champion
  • Decent 1v1 and also decent AoE damage
  • Decent in every stage of the game
  • High mobility
179.png

Cons

  • Really hard to master
  • Pretty useless if behind
  • No in built sustain/low hp regen
  • 3.png3.png3.png Makes your job really hard, so you have to play around it most of the time
127.jpg

Riven's abilities and explanations Back to Top

180.png

rivenpassive.png Passive

RIVEN PASSIVE.png

That's the whole reason riven combo are so 'complicated'. You need to wave autos in between spells.

  • Do not underestimate Riven's passive, it is a HUGE portion of Riven's damage
  • Always to to make use of it by autoing after every spell used
179.png

riventricleave.png Q

RIVEN Q.png

  • Basically 3 gapcloser with the last one that also knocks your enemy
  • You will need to learn to 'Fast-Q-Combo'
  • You can use the 3rd Q to jump walls/escape
179.png

rivenmartyr.png W

RIVEN W.png

  • Plain and simple an AoE stun
179.png

rivenfeint.png E

RIVEN E.png

  • A dash that is also a shield that scales with your AD bonus
  • After using it you can use the 'Doublecast'
  • Pretty usefull in conjuction with your 3rdriventricleave.png to position yourself in order to be sure to not miss a walljump
179.png

rivenfengshuiengine.png R

RIVEN R.png

  • Gives you AD bonus upon activation
  • An execute damage on 2nd cast (like garen ult)
  • Can be inputbuffered in combos with riventricleave.png or rivenmartyr.png
  • Gives you also extra range on your autos and abilities
127.jpg

Riven's Role Back to Top

180.png

Riven - Role

  • I would consider riven as a fighter that is really close at the concept of an AD Caster. Riven can also be versatile in her role, you can play her as an offtank if needed or as an assassin.
179.png

Riven - Early game

  • Depending on the matchup you could be supposed to stomp your lane or just to hold on and farm as much as possibile trying to show up in skirmishes/fights.
179.png

Riven - Mid game

  • This is where it gets tricky. You could either splitpush (if you are actually able to hold your own 1v1 vs anyone) or you could group. It all depends on how the game is going and on your teamcomp/enemy teamcomp
179.png

Riven - Late game / Teamfights

  • You are supposed to be grouped by now.

Teamfights are a bit tricky to play as riven since you need to consider :

  • 3.png - If you know the enemies have it up you can't really full commit with an all-in combo so try to bait and do not blow all your cds at once
  • Backline open - If you are confident you can reach their backline by 4.png on them and execute your combo go for it. Mind that if somehow you fuck up you will most likely die for nothing
  • Your ADC is fed - Just stay back and peel for him, you have one stun and a knockup. 3071.png Most of the time you will build it so you will be shredding enemies armor aswell.
127.jpg

Tips and tricks Back to Top

180.png

Tips and Tricks

  • You can use your 3rd riventricleave.png to jump walls and some terrain like jarvanivcataclysm.png - crystallize.png - taliyahr.png
  • rivenfeint.png will help you position better to use your 3rdriventricleave.png making your walljumping way more consistent
  • When going back to lane remember to use riventricleave.png rivenfeint.png on cd, also remember to use your 3rdriventricleave.png to jump tower
  • rivenfeint.pngrivenmartyr.png cast at the same time will result in you dashing foward but stunning at your initial position, this is pretty usefull when escaping or in matchup like 122.png to prevent him to pulling you in once again
127.jpg

Riven Mechanics - Input buffering Back to Top

180.png

Input Buffering

So Input Buffering means queueing up an ability that will be used before you actually use it

What you can actually input buffer on riven:

  • 3077.png rivenmartyr.png
  • 3077.png riventricleave.png
  • rivenfeint.png 3077.png
  • 3077.png rivenfengshuiengine.png
  • rivenfengshuiengine.png riventricleave.png
  • rivenfengshuiengine.png rivenmartyr.png
  • rivenfeint.png rivenfengshuiengine.png
                 rivenpassive.png
  • Another usefull thing is to input buffer your Autoattacks right before you flash, so your auto will go off instantly after the flash.

N.B. Do not issue any other movement command other than that, or the auto attack command will be cancelled.

This is a pretty simple way of explaining it but you will notice about it more in the next combo section

Riven Mechanics - Wall jumping Back to Top

180.png

Riven walljumping

Walljumping is pretty simple right? You position yourself correctly and you jump that damn wall with your 3rd riventricleave.png. Like previosly said you can also position yourself with your rivenfeint.png to make sure you don't miss any jump.

There are harder jump to hit and once again a Dekar173 video will help you with those.

Riven combo - Fast Q and Q dancing Back to Top

180.png

Fast Q

'Fast q' consist in basically doing riventricleave.png - Auto - riventricleave.png - Auto - riventricleave.png Auto. You need to cancel your Auto animation with your riventricleave.png and your riventricleave.png animation by inputing a move command followed by an autoattack

This is a video of Dekar173 (high elo Riven/Rengar onetrick explaining to you how to perform it)

Q Dancing

Basically the same criteria as the fast you but this time you want to dash trought your target in order to dodge some of his spell/making you harder to hit.

This video is pretty well done, explaining you how to perform it and when to do it

Riven combo - Double cast Back to Top

180.png

'Double cast'

The double cast is, with the fast q, probably the most important riven mechanics. After you cast rivenfeint.png you will have rougly 0.75 seconds to DOUBLE CAST (it means that 2 spells will be going off at the same time) 2 spell at once. In order to doublecast your riventricleave.png must always be the last spell.
So you can either double cast rivenmartyr.png riventricleave.png or rivenfengshuiengine.png riventricleave.png. Most of the time you will use double cast in burst combos like for example rivenfeint.png - auto - rivenmartyr.pngriventricleave.png.

This is a video of Adrianaries a challenger NA onetrick riven that explains you how to perform it.

Author's note & My guides. Back to Top

I started to play lol early in the days (half of the season 1), finished bronze (s1) gold (s2) diamond (every other season) i didn't really try to get higher since i think it would require me too much time.

I like to create guides and contents so expect some other guides coming soon, i don't have any stream or social media.
