Summoner Spells Back to Top

TP + Flash is the best option

You need 4.png, because Ryze hasn't got any way of scape and it's a common target to gank. TP is perfect for presence in lane and ganks.

Masteries Back to Top

With the season 6 changes, I think this is the best mastery page for Ryze.

The mastery "Thunderlord's Decree" give us poke, give us burst, give us potential to kill. It's the best choice.
Though you can swap thunderlord's for stormraider's if you want, it's a good choice too.

I picked cookies because they give a good sustain in lane.

Feast is quite good because I usually focus on cs as Ryze.

Finally, the mastery "Oppressor" gives us that extra damage that we need and is quite good on Ryze, because we will snaring people everytime. By the way, "Bounty Hunter" is good, but you can't kill the enemy on every game at early game so thats why I picked the other mastery.

Edit: If you don't feel confident about last-hitting, you can pick Savagery instead of Wanderer.

Always upgrade R first, don't have to explain.
Upgrade your Q always, since it's your basic damage skill and it gives you a longer passive duration.
Then upgrade W or Q, depending if you're agaisn't a ranged matchup or a melee matchup.

W-You want to secure the kill agaisn't a champ with scape abilities.
E-You want to burst down champs without scape and you can stay in melee agaisn't them.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Best item for ryze at start, it gives you sustain and good stats.
Advanced start. For those easy match ups where you can look for an early kill.

Core Items

These 2 items are your core items. They give you all what you need on Ryze and then they will be upgraded into your final core items.
    Core damage items.
If you are agaisn't hard CC: pick mercury's. Otherwise, pick sorcerers. Since riot deleted homeguard boots on patch 5.23, you must buy Distortion now. Edit: Swiftness has become a nice choice on Ryze nowadays ^^
Pick 1 everytime you recall. As Ryze you will get camped alot.
    Standard final build.
    Final build vs AD
    Final build vs AP

Situational Items

In most of the cases, you will choose rabadon because of the tons of damage. But if you are agaisn't a double AP matchup, feel free to pick abyssal scepter. If you are facing AD, pick FH. If you are really fed, pick GA.
You should pick this item agaisn't a double AP composition. (Top and mid) It's a great item, though.
I really recommend this item if you are sure that you will not need defense at the moment.
Quite good agaisn't an AD matchup or an Auto Attack composition team. Anyways the stats of this item are perfect for Ryze.
If it isn't enough with mercury's, you can always buy this for completely evade the CC and do something.

Doran's ring is a must on Ryze early game, because we will play passive until getting those 750g for the tear and this is the perfect item.

You will farm ASAP the tear and the catalyst, these two items are the best on ryze and we will upgrade into Rod of Ages and Archangel Staff after.

You have to know that Ryze priorize mana too, his abilities scale with mana too, but we only need these two items for having a decent mana pool, then you decide if going defensive or agressive, since Frozen Heart gives mana too and Abyssal Scepter gives you AP and MR.

The thing is, Ryze's core build is always the same and cannot change, otherwise the champ will not work.
The other items are classified as situational.

VS

Aatrox

Easy

You should be able to kill him at level 3 with the 3 stack combo. Just make sure to play passive agaisn't him until that moment.

VS

Ahri

Hard

Only for mid match-ups.

She can hardly spoil your passive with a charm, so be aware.
Upgrade Q first and then W, try to kill her before it gets too impossible ^^'

VS

Cassiopeia

Hard

She's really hard because she can deny you at level 6 with her cassiopeiapetrifyinggaze.png ultimate. Be aware of flashing in the right moment.

VS

Cho'Gath

Hard

His feralscream.png makes this lane very difficult. If you avoid it meaby you can kill him.

VS

Darius

Easy

People says that Darius is OP, but Ryze can stop him and bully him.

Play very passive until level 4, and on that level try to kill him with one of your combos.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Easy

Since I never see so many Mundo's around the game, I can just say that this lane is easy.

Just dodge his Q.

VS

Fiora

Medium

Her fiorariposte.png (W) makes it difficult to kill her at early levels, but if you bait it and reserve your stacks, you can kill her at level 3. After level 6, you just destroy her in every trade.

VS

Gangplank

Medium

This will be a very passive lane, because you can't kill him due to his removescurvy.png (W) on early game. Focus on farming and try to kill him at level 6.

VS

Garen

Hard

This matchup may be difficult due to his garenslash3.png(Q), but if you calculate when he's gonna attack and you reserve your stacks, meaby you could kill him. But focus on safe play.

VS

Gnar

Easy

Easy lane, just focus on farming and trade everytime he's far from mega gnar.

VS

Hecarim

Easy

Most Hecarim's will attack you at low levels due to 14.png ignite, but you can kill him very easily at level 3, since he will have no scape if you do the combo correctly.

VS

Irelia

Medium

The only thing you have to do is calculate when she is gonna stun you, after that, you should be able to kill her with your combo. Focus on playing passive until level 6.

VS

Jax

Easy

He just can't win you at early game, or mid game, or late game. You count him so hard.

Make sure to play safe until level 4 and then try to do the combo on him, because most of the Jax's will jump on you and it will end in your kill.

VS

Lulu

Hard

She denies you with her luluw.png (W) and her poke is so annoying. Stick to farm and wait for your jungler's gank.

VS

Malphite

Easy

He can't kill you, neither you can't kill him, but you farm better. Focus on farm until level 6 and then try to kill him.

VS

Maokai

Easy

Farm until 6, then destroy him.

VS

Nasus

Easy

Bully him early.

VS

Nautilus

Easy

He's too tanky but you can poke him with E so easily and get the kill at level 6. He hasn't enough damage for bursting you.

VS

Olaf

Hard

He might be a hard lane once he gets level 6 due to his olafragnarok.png (R), which makes your snares useless. The thing is that you will need to poke him down and then kill him at level 4 with your combo, if this doesn't works, ask your jungler to come.

VS

Pantheon

Medium

He's a cheesy champion, he can destroy you if you don't play carefully but he's so squishy, play safe until 3 and then try to kill him.

VS

Renekton

Easy

VS

Rengar

Medium

He could be a problem at first 3 levels because he can jump on you from the bush alot of times. You should farm with Q from a distance and then search the kill at level 4.

VS

Riven

Easy

One of the easiest matchups for Ryze. Most of the Riven players will play agressive agaisn't you, because they have to do it, otherwise they will die at level 6. The trick is to picking runeprison.png at level 1 for avoid her Q and getting safe, then picking overload.png at level 2 and finally spellflux.png

At this point, you should be able to kill her very easily.

VS

Ryze

Medium

Mirror lanes in rankeds?

VS

Shen

Hard

Never trade him, ask your jungler for kill him.

VS

Singed

Easy

He's rubbish. He can't trade you, simply as that. Abuse him at levels 3-4.

VS

Tahm Kench

Hard

This champ should be permabanned. You can't trade him because as soon as he stacks 3 marks on you, he will eat you and deny your combo, dealing high amounts of damage.

By the way, he's the only champ on the entire game that is able to resist a full Ryze rotation, believe it or not.

VS

Teemo

Medium

He can annoy you on first levels, but you destroy him clearly in a trade with your combo.

I put this matchup at "medium" because most Teemo's will pick 14.png and will try to kill you.

VS

Vladimir

Medium

Once he uses his vladimirsanguinepool.png(W) go for the kill.

VS

Volibear

Easy

He's very easy to avoid. Just focus on farm and it will be all right.

VS

Yasuo

Easy

Very easy lane, focus on farming until level 4, then AA him for cancelling his shield and make sure to do the combo.

If he tries to yasuoW.png you, just walk across it and keep with the work.

About me Back to Top

Hello everyone, my name is Powersofarcane and I'm a one trick pony Ryze. I've been maining him since I've seen Huni playing him on LCS Spring and I loved this champ. Im at Diamond 2 now, and I think that I can give you some tips about this champ.

I'll upload videos in the future at this guide showing the combos.

Ryze combos Back to Top

Okay, first of all: You have to know how your passive works.

Everytime you cast a spell, you "stack" 1 time for each spell, and when you get 5 stacks, your passive starts and you become a machine gun.

You can start your passive and start the combo from 2 stacks mininum, this is how you have to do it.

Without ultimate:

2 stacks: QEW or EQW and then do the rotation of QEQWQEQWQEQW, it's so important to follow this rotations always, or otherwise your abilities will get in cooldown, and we don't want that.
3 stacks: W and then QEQWQEQWQEQW
4 stacks: QEQWQEQWQEQWQEQW and etc.

At level 6

Once you get your ultimate, you can start your combo even from 1 stack, and the combos are the same. The difference is that you have to activate your R at the beginning, just like this:

1 stack: REQW or RQEW and then QEQWQEQWQEQW
2 stacks: RWQ and QEQWQEQWQEQWQEQW
3 or 4 stacks: RQEQWQEQWQEQWQEQW

If you learn and practice this combos, you will learn how to make things with this champ.

This is a 1v1 agaisn't a diamond Riven player.

My own Ryze montage ^^

Ryze after 6.3 Back to Top

As you know, Ryze got a nerf at this patch on his passive and now you can only cast 5 spells at once.

The combo would look like this:

1 Stack: WQER QEQWQ
2 Stacks: WR QEQWQ
3 Stacks: W QEQWQ
4 Stacks: QEQWQ

Tips Back to Top

This is a personal section, and I will recommend everything I do when I play Ryze:

  • Be aware of the danger and always be stacking, always.
  • Play very safe until level 6
  • Buy a new keyboard every weekend
  • Don't make YOLO's if you don't know yet exactly how much damage you can deal
  • Always follow the rotation that I explained before, because it's the only one that works.
  • Ryze is a late game champ, if you played bad at early game, just focus on farming and wait until the items come :)
  • Ban Tahm Kench
  • Enjoy this guide ;)

Early game Back to Top

As Ryze, you have a nice kill potential once you get level 3 agaisn't most of the matchups, but the tanky ones.

(Ex: 54.png2.png223.png)

Your focus would be playing passive and saving enough mana to kill your oponent at that level. Of course, you can poke him/her with your E when he/she gets near minions. It deals high amount of damage.

Just pay attention to not get ganked, Ryze is probably the perfect target to have in early game, so be much careful. The enemy jungler will probably camp you because you become a beast if you snowball.

Once you hit level 6, you can 1v1 anyone. You can't kill a champion in a single combo, but two will do.

Mid game Back to Top

The mid game comes once you've built your Rod of Ages and your Archangel's Staff. At this point, you are a damage machine but you are squishy, so do not throw. Focus on team fights and try to burst the enemies down.

You must, as Ryze, look for quick kills to those champions that stay out of position, because once you snare them and start the combo, it will end on a secure kill. A 5v4 results in a easy win on a possible team fight, take advantage of that.

If you feel that your damage isn't enough, go for Void Staff, it grants you all necessary damage to destroy the adc.
If you feel like getting rekt, go for some tanky items like randuin's or banshee's. (Do not build CDR items, remember your runes and your R passive)

Late game Back to Top

At this point, you should be able to kill anyone and to make big plays. You will get focused on every team fights due to your high damage and survivability, so try to kill their mid or adc as fast as possible.

Look for objectives, for towers and skirmishes.
