Summoner Spells Back to Top

Flash is pretty self explanatory and ghost is going to be your other spell in 90% of your games on Ryze.

Only reason to take exhaust if you are against a heavy burst assassin like talon/lb/zed but even in these cases I'l usually still take ghost for the potential to outplay with the movement speed at any point in the game.

You can take teleport if you're top lane or if you want to match your lane opponents teleport.

Cleanse vs hard CC you can't outplay like Kennen, TF, Annie, Lulu or vs a jungler like Elise, Lee, Hecarim, Ivern (Junglers that can potentially lock you down for an easy gank).

Masteries Back to Top

I take this mastery page almost every game, you can go 2 in vamprisim instead of just 1 if you prefer the extra sustain.

You can take biscuits if you're vs someone like Orianna and want more sustain.

You can also go 12 in resolve for better regen/shields and that 15% reduced summoner spell cooldownsBeO0yDk.png

Realm Warp can only be ranked up twice, with ranks available at levels 6 and 11. Instead, Overload has 6 ranks. lolking won't let me change his spells correctly caused they are unique but since he has 6 ranks in Q I made this myself.

kVcAvAp.png

Note: You can rank up R at latest level 8 instead of 6

It's better to only put 3 points into Q because the bonus damage from E-Q is based on your E's rank not your Q. But because E has such high mana cost when maxed that putting 3 ranks into Q and then maxing E at 7 when you have your catalyst so that you can afford that high mana cost.

Passive: Arcane Mastery

Ryze gains (5% per 100 AP) bonus mana.

Q: Overload

PASSIVE: Ryze's other basic abilities reset Overload's cooldown and generate a Rune for 4 seconds, up to a maximum of 2.
ACTIVE: Ryze unleashes a runic blast in the target direction, dealing magic damage to the first enemy struck and consuming all of his Runes.
If Ryze consumes 2 Runes, he shields himself from up to 60 - 200 (based on level) (+ 60% AP) (+ 3% bonus mana) damage for 2 seconds and gains bonus movement speed for the duration.
FLUX: Overload deals increased damage, based on Spell Flux's rank, and spreads to all nearby enemies marked with Flux, consuming the mark on all targets.

W: Rune Prison

ACTIVE: Ryze instantly deals magic damage and roots the target enemy for 1 second.
FLUX: Rune Prison's root duration is doubled to 2 seconds.

E: Spell Flux

ACTIVE: Ryze hurls an orb of runic energy at the target enemy, dealing magic damage and marking them with Flux for 3 seconds, causing his next basic ability against them to consume the mark and gain bonus effects.
Spell Flux spreads to all nearby enemies, applying its damage and marking them with Flux. Enemies killed by any of Ryze's abilities while marked with Flux also spread Flux to nearby enemies.

R: Realm Warp

ACTIVE: Ryze channels for 2 seconds, during which he opens a portal around him, and upon successfully completing the channel, he and all allies within the portal blink to the target location.
Ryze can move around and cast spells during this channel, which can be interrupted by both silencing and immobilizing effects.

Combos:

Note: You should use Q anytime you can before you spells unless it's going to prohibit your movement for doing something else e.g. if you're going to snare someone, don't Q before just because the CD is going to be reset this will result in your character stopping for a split second and being unable to snare them.

E-E-W-Q

Can be used as poke in lane to hit the enemy with flux, get them with an empowered Q and then follow up with poke. Usually less useful unless against very mobile opponents. Also brings up your shield.

E-W-Q

Usually an escape combo. stuns with an empowered W and some free damage from your Q, as well as giving you your shield and ms to escape.

E-E-Q

Usually a poke combo used to spread flux to lane opponent and hit them with an empowered Q. Very useful because you can just Q the wave and it will hit your opponent. Can also be used to go for AOE damage in a teamfight, though this is risky and usually used less, though it can do huge damage if executed properly. Also used for straight waveclear. One of your most versatile and most used combos.

Q-E-Q-W-Q-E-Q

A standard prolonged damage combo, usually you won't get through the whole thing but this is your maximum DPS. The idea is to never throw 2 Q's in a row and always reset them. This will give you huge damage from empowered Q's.

W-E-Q

I use this for tower dives, or other low health his risk situations. You get huge damage from your empowered Q, as well as proccing your shield and ms to get you out of a tight spot.

Q-E-Q-W-E-Q

Not maximum damage, but a good amount of empowered Q's and also brings up shield. I like to use this one later when the max damage combo is overkill anyway.

W-Q-E-Q

Same as W-E-Q but more damage and no shield.

R-Hourglass

Teleport away in hourglass to save yourself from dying or getting CC.

R-Recall

If you recall before your R goes off you will stay at the initial location but any teammates inside will still be teleported. An example of this: .eJwNyEEOhCAMAMC_8AAKVBH8DUGCRm0J1Oxhs39

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

    start these everygame

Core Items

aim to recall for tear + control ward
    early core
    ROA>morell/abyssal>seraphs
pick a cdr item (can get both) , then void
    example of glass cannon
    example vs heavy ad
    example vs heavy ap
tabis vs full ad. treads vs heavy ap or cc. swifties vs fed rylais user.

Situational Items

frozen heart or hourglass if having trouble surviving vs ad
you can rush negatron after catalyst if you want MR and upgrade it after
If you back with 700gp after roa
    only vs supression

Ryze vs AP

Mana crystal start to upgrade into tear as soon as possible + refill pot. After tear get tier 1 boots and upgrade to treads after ROA. Catalyst>blasting wand and once you finish ROA you should have tier 2 boots. Abyssal if you're vs an AP mid laner or Morell if vs AD or ahead. If we're against an AP mid like Cassio we should go Abyssal then Morell and finish with a void staff. 10% CDR from runes, 20% CDR from morell, 10% CDR from abyssal = 40% CDR at level 18.

Ryze Glass Cannon

Mana crystal start to upgrade into tear as soon as possible + refill pot. After tear get CDR boots. You can get blasting wand before catalyst if you think you can kill them. Morell after ROA then seraphs. You can get Void Staff or Deathcap now most games you usually get Void Staff because at this point the enemy has built MR, but on the off chance they don't have MR Deathcap yields higher burst.

Ryze vs AD

Mana crystal start to upgrade into tear as soon as possible + refill pot. Tear + tier 1 boots and get tier 2 after ROA. After ROA you can get frozen heart instead of Morell because it gives 20% CDR + 400 mana. Void staff or hourglass after frozen heart and if you don't need Hourglass you can get Deathcap or Rylais last time (No need for Abyssal because this build is for vs AD). Tier 2 boots for AD are situational you can get either one (excluding CDR) depending on what you need to survive. Tabis and Swifties aren't built very often but if you're dying to slows or a large amount of damage from auto attacks they are needed.

VS heavy ad boots are situational.

notes: swifties aren't in the best spot right now, but if you're getting pounded by a fed Cass they are needed.

VS

Ahri

Easy

You should have enough movement speed to dodge her charm.

VS

Akali

Easy

Just root her if she engages on you and walk back.

VS

Anivia

Medium

A good Anivia might be hard cause she can zone you but if you pop her egg it's 100% kill

VS

Annie

Hard

consider taking cleanse this is a hard matchup because you cannot outplay anything

VS

Aurelion Sol

Easy

Never actually played this matchup but I'd imagine it's easy, just root him to dodge his stars.

VS

Azir

Medium

Azir can poke you out of your range but if he overextends you can probably force his summs with Ghost

VS

Brand

Medium

Brand can outrange you be you can dodge his stun if you're better than him

VS

Cassiopeia

Hard

Cass can be a problem but imo this is more of a skill matchup vs her. Because you both have a similar playstyle you just have to out DPS her.

VS

Cho'Gath

Medium

Cho is a huge cockblock but he has short range so if you don't get knocked up you can win pre-6 or maybe after Abyssal

VS

Diana

Medium

VS

Ekko

Easy

If he engages on you just 2 second snare him and walk back after proccing a rune

VS

Fizz

Medium

Fizz can win at 6 if he lands R, dodge his fish and 2second snare him/kite.

VS

Galio

Medium

Galio can definitely hold his own against you, not played often but don't underestimate.

VS

Gangplank

Easy

You have a pretty decent auto to try to stop his barrels, might be hard to lock down during a gank but you can push him in.

VS

Heimerdinger

Easy

One of the easiest matchups for Ryze. E-Q his turrets and the flux will spread around for an easy lane.

VS

Jayce

Medium

You can win early but once he gets hexdrinker he's going to be hard to fight. Get a lead before he gets maw or else he's going to solo kill you.

VS

Karma

Medium

Karma has really good disengage and waveclear, if you don't get pushed in you can beat her.

VS

Karthus

Easy

really easy lane, tear>tier2 boots and with ghost you can easily solo kill him.

VS

Kassadin

Medium

kassadin easy in lane, harder mid game. Be weary of his q stopping channels (realm warp)

VS

Katarina

Easy

Kat seems really slippery but 2second snare counters her so hard because it's just point and click. block her Q poke with your rune shield.

VS

Kennen

Easy

Snare him as soon as he ults and walk away.

VS

LeBlanc

Hard

If you're in range to damage her, shes in range to damage you and she bursts 2x harder. Get negatron cloak after tear and upgrade to Abyssal after ROA

VS

Lissandra

Medium

She can't kill you but you can't really kill her either, she has decent waveclear too (even matchup).

VS

Lulu

Hard

Lulu is like anti-carry champion. She can't kill you and she has OK waveclear but she sets up ganks really easy and completely shuts you down in a fight if she decides to polymorph.

VS

Lux

Medium

If you dodge her snare it's a really easy matchup, consider getting Abyssal/treads if you're having trouble dodging her spells.

VS

Malzahar

Medium

Can't outplay anything in his kit using movement speed, and has good waveclear. Watch for his misplays and get your jungler to gank. If he uses his minions you can just e-q them and kill the first one.

VS

Morgana

Medium

Morgana is just a cockblock vs AP carries too. She has 0 kill pressure if she misses her Q.

VS

Orianna

Medium

orianna can do reliable damage from a distance, watch for her misplays and coordinate a jungle gank. You can solo her just don't auto trade with her because her passive will win.

VS

Swain

Medium

You can definitely beat him early but he has a powerspike after ROA and you have to wait for your Morell to kill him

VS

Syndra

Medium

medium or hard, go abyssal after roa in this matchup and don't get stunned. Consider getting an early negatron cloak if you're having trouble in lane.

VS

Taliyah

Medium

depending on your level at Ryze this can be an easy or medium matchup, if you can dodge her knockup it's a free matchup

VS

Talon

Medium

Get hourglass after your Morell item if you're ahead or get frozen heart instead of Morell if you're behind

VS

Twisted Fate

Easy

Easy matchup but a good TF can survive it, consider taking cleanse if they have a strong early jungler to avoid giving free kills in laning.

VS

Urgot

Hard

VS

Varus

Hard

good waveclear/poke just farm this lane out and wait for a misplay.

VS

Veigar

Medium

Veigar has devastating burst if you get hit by his stun but if he can't lock you down you can kill him.

VS

Vel'Koz

Medium

dodge knockup and you have stormraiders to not get slowed

VS

Viktor

Medium

Viktor also has range but you be able to win vs him if you don't eat poke all of laning phase. Viktor R also interrupts your R

VS

Xerath

Hard

hard matchup, ryze has trouble with ap matchups that can easily outrange him. Out CS him and watch for his misplays

VS

Yasuo

Easy

Yasuo is a pretty easy matchup IMO, just e-w snare him and kite back.

VS

Zed

Medium

consider taking exhaust if you think you're gonna have trouble with him also remember hexdrinker when all in. Hourglass is a must in this matchup if he's not insanely behind consider taking the frozen heart build as well.

VS

Ziggs

Medium

damage from a distance but you should be able to get into his face and burst him

VS

Zilean

Hard

Zilean mid has really good waveclear and his R is a huge cockblock, don't expect to solo kill him just outfarm and push him into turret.

matchups explained Back to Top

Easy

All of the champions under easy rely on skill shots or slows in trades. These types of champs are so easily countered by Ryze with stormraiders and your q shield, any champions that are also hard to lock down like Katarina and Yasuo are a fairly easy matchup for Ryze when you take into account your movement speed, w, and q shield vs them.

Medium

Most of the matchups that are medium should be easy for an if you're the better player, the majority of these matchups require you to dodge signifcant skillshots to win.

Hard
Matchups that are under hard are matchups that either outrange you or have better waveclear than you, wait for a misplay or a jungle gank or try to outplay them. Azir/Xerath/Orianna are examples of reliable damage dealers from a distance.
