Summoner Spells Back to Top

You want to run 4.png6.png most of the time on Ryze if you're playing against a standard mage like 61.png or 112.png. Against burst matchups such as 91.png or 238.png you want to run 3.png instead of Ghost. 1.png is only ran when you're playing against a gank setup mid+jungle combo like a 25.png and 60.png where you need the cleanse to survive ganks and Ghost is not enough after you're CCd. Personally I would never run 12.png due to how strong 6.png is, but if you have a personal preference of using it it's not the end of the world. Only run it in matchups where you only farm however, and where you have strong dive presence in the botlane (e.g if your bot is 143.png22.png and they are constantly pushing vs. 81.png40.png). Another option is to run 7.png if you feel like you don't need the constant movementspeed from Ghost, the need for Exhaust or the CC for going Cleanse. This can be used against something like a mage in midlane+ non CC jungler (such as 76.png).

New Runes Back to Top

Standard Ryze page right now. Start with TP if your insecure or just heal if you want to swap for TP on first reset with Unsealed Spellbook.

Masteries Back to Top

This is the only 13.png mastery page you need. Stormraiders is exceptional on Ryze due to how easily he procs it with a combo, and mobility helps him get more combos in. Going Meditation will help you throughout the game by never going oom; which is the only thing that limits the crazy damage that Ryze possesses. The rest of the points are usually spent in the Ferocity tree; picking up some lifesteal/spellvamp from Vampirism is also sweet for Ryze to get some free sustain throughout the game.

You want to take your ryzee.png level one to make sure you have the ability to push the lane and poke your enemy laner at the same time, after that you want to get your ryzeq.png level 2 and then ryzew.png level 3. After that you want to pick up only 2 more points in your ryzeqwrapper.png before you start maxing ryzee.png(E). This seems very strange at first, but it makes complete sense. In earlygame your E (when maxed) uses a lot of mana whilst your Q stays at the same mana throughout ranks. If you had unlimited mana; E max is a lot better due to the extra damage it gives your Q, however since Ryze has great mana problems before he gets his 3070.png3010.png combo, you want to take the early points in your Q (a low mana cost spell). After you get these items (which is around level 7 when you start maxing your E), its a LOT more efficient to max in this order (R>E>Q>W) due to the flat out increased damage which is supported by your great mana pool.

Your 3 core items will always be the same 3158.png3003.png3027.png, where you rush 3070.png-> 3158.png->3027.png->3003.png. This gives you the highest mana pool possible in the shortest amount of time, while giving you a cheap 10% CDR from the Boots.

After you've completed these items you want to have a look at the enemy teamcomp. Is their damage spread through physical and magical? Go for a 3165.png->3135.png. Do they have a bunch of magic damage? Go for a 3102.png->3135.png. After you've completed these two items build a 3089.png to close out your build and boost your insanely high AP.

If the enemies have insanely high AD damage, you can swap your boots for 3047.png and instead of going Morello/Banshee's you can build a 3157.png for extra defensive capabilities.

VS

Ahri

Medium

This matchup can be very tricky if you play against a good Ahri who always uses ahriseduce.png once you start your ryzew.png animation on her, but if you play around that and you use your ryzew.png to start comboing her around minions then it's an alright matchup for you. Since she has less mana-regen on you after first base, you want to look to push her in constantly and look for roams. If you have a tricky time you can buy a 1057.png after your 3070.png to make sure you always have pressure in the lane. Be careful in mid/lategame to overextend for kills when she is around, as her charm is an easy way to lock you down mid-rotation of spells. You win this matchup by farming evenly with her and trading around minionwaves where you can spread your ryzee.pngryzeq.png combo on her+pushing the wave and outroaming. If the enemies have a CC jungler (such as 60.png) then you should grab 1.png instead of Ghost in this matchup.

VS

Cassiopeia

Hard

This is one of the most difficult matchups for Ryze. Much like the 103.png matchup, it's tricky because Ryze has such long animation times, making it an easy time for 69.pngto land her cassiopeiaq.png and start chasing you down with her cassiopeiae.png. If she lands her cassiopeiaq.png she will always out trade you with her cassiopeiae.png spam, so you want to trade in a way where it's either very hard for her to land her Q on you, or you are faster than her after she tries to chase you down. Due to this, look for mostly poke on long range with your ryzee.png spreading through the minions and on her, and then ryzeq.png for good damage. You should definitely get an early 1057.png after your 3070.png in this matchup, and try to avoid trading aggressively as much as possible and just try to push the lane and outroam her. You can also try to bait her cassiopeiar.png during all stages of the game by only doing the first part of your Combo, ryzew.png+ryzee.png and turning away from her not using your ryzeq.png will make her cassiopeiar.png you in many situations. Try to play clever and never take long trades vs. 69.png

VS

Corki

Medium

Your movement is extremely important in this matchup. It swings in your favour depending on how many phosphorusbomb.png you dodge throughout the early laningphase, and later on how many missilebarrage.png you can dodge whilst comboing him. This matchup can also be tricky due to the fact that 42.png does a lot of magic damage, but also has strong autoattacks. Grabbing a 1057.png if you fall behind is not a bad choice. Try to get your ryzew.pngryzee.pngryzeq.png combo in and then leave the trade, he wants to phosphorusbomb.png+Auto+ggun.png+Auto on you, and if you can dodge his phosphorusbomb.png that's a big part of his damage missing in the trade, leaving you come out victorious. This lane can also be tricky for you if he gets an early 3155.png, if he does try to just push your lane and start roaming. Be aware of his Package at all times though, and don't look for aggressive roams when it's up.

VS

Ekko

Medium

This is not a very difficult matchup, but it can be medium difficulty if he gets pressure from his jungler. Ekko shines in lane if you let him poke you with ekkoq.png and push the minions simultaneously, so avoid it by standing a bit left or right of the minionwave at all times (depending on where you have vision of the enemy jungler and where you know your jungler is). Ekko wants to take short trades in this matchup, proc his passive and then fall back. You want to do the opposite; take a short trade on him with your ryzew.pngryzee.pngryzeq.png combo as he ekkoe.png's on you, but after that chase him down with another few autoattacks+ ryzee.pngryzeq.png whilst avoiding letting him proc his passive on you. Be careful of roams against Ekko, as his most effective way to set up ekkow.png on you is seeing you run from/to the lane in vision. 2055.png in the river bush is important to remain control over river and allow you to roam more safely.

VS

Fizz

Easy

This is, to me, one of the more fun and easiest matchups to play as 13.png. You have full control over almost every trade with Fizz throughout the game due to his short range. Poke him in lane with autos+ryzee.pngryzeq.png and always try to save your ryzew.png until after he has used his fizze.png to make sure you get the highest damage output+safety. If you use your ryzew.png in trade combos before he has used his fizze.png, it can lead to you losing a lot more damage+mana than him. If he (somehow) gets fed early, buy a 1057.png to reduce his pressure on you and farm up until you have your 3070.png3027.png to start playing aggressively again.

VS

Jayce

Hard

This is a mid pick that has seen more resurgence again after the buffs to Lethality, and is one of the hardest matchups for 13.png. He can always buy a 3155.png early to have full pressure in lane, and choose when to trade with you due to his longer range. One of the most annoying things with this matchup is how his jaycetotheskies.png animation in melee form can take place during your ryzew.png making your W pretty useless. Try to combo him with your ryzee.pngryzeq.png behind your minionwaves to avoid getting Shockblast combo'd by him. You can also trade with him using your ryzew.png if he is in ranged form, with a quick ryzew.pngryzee.pngryzeq.png combo and then using the movementspeed from Stormraiders' Surge+your passive to dodge his Q-E combo. Try to stay alive in lane and don't all-in him before you get items, and just look to outroam with your superior pushingpower.

VS

Kassadin

Medium

This can be a very easy matchup for you if your jungler ganks the Kassadin pre-6 and gets you ahead. You want to always push this lane to make 38.png lose farm under tower and set up for roam opportunities. If you are even with the Kassadin at level 6, and he has something like a 1057.png1082.png2033.png, he can easily win all-ins with you if you are both full hp due to his passive. Always be aware of his riftwalk.png CD and stacks so you don't overextend too hard when he has it up with enough mana and stacks to do insane damage to you. You win this lane by making him lose farm early by permapushing with vision and outroaming him because he has to catch waves that you push in mid.

VS

Katarina

Easy

This is a very easy matchup for you if the Katarina doesn't get kills early to outdamage you. If you are both even throughout the game, you win and outdamage her at every point in the game. This is a very good matchup for you due to how easily you can avoid her dagger damage and lock her down with your ryzew.png making her katarinaewrapper.png useless. Always look out to not get damaged by her daggers, and continuously poke her in lane with autos+ryzee.pngryzeq.png in lane pushing her in to the tower. It's a lot like the Kassadin matchup apart from the fact that Katarina has less kill pressure on you. In midgame a simple ryzeq.pngryzew.pngryzee.pngryzeq.png combo takes 50%~ of her HP and leaves you with stormraiders+passive to escape her re-engage. Play around your cooldowns smartly and you win this matchup easy peasy.

VS

LeBlanc

Medium

This is, to many, a pretty simple matchup for Ryze but I don't necessarily agree. The better the 7.png, the exponentially harder this matchup gets. Your main focus against 7.png is like against Ekko, to not let her leblancw.png the minion wave and you at the same time. This makes her control the lane and harass you at the same time. Play on the side of the lane where you have vision and your jungler for backup, and try to harass her with a simple ryzew.pngryzee.pngryzeq.png combo continuously whilst dodging her leblance.png to make sure you win trades. She want to trade with you only with her leblance.pngleblancq.png, and she does that by outranging you for any countertrade. Make sure you don't get hit by multiple chains or you are pretty doomed. Try to push the lane after 6 and look for more roams than solokills on her to assure you win the game.

VS

Orianna

Easy

This can be a medium difficulty matchup if the Orianna is good and has good movement to dodge most of your spells and autospacing, but most of the time this matchup is pretty straight forward and easy for the 13.png. You win most trades with a simple ryzew.pngryzee.pngryzeq.png combo with autoattacks weaved inbetween, and you have an easier time pushing the lane than she does earlygame. Look to push before she gets her 3802.png, and after that you can look for more harass and trades with your 3070.png3010.png. Also try to get your jungler to gank her, as you have an easy time getting in range with your ryzee.pngryzew.png for followup for your jungler.

VS

Syndra

Medium

This is a full-on skill matchup for both champions. Whoever has the better movement, dodges more spells and overall has more accuracy will win this matchup. As Ryze your focus is to harass her with your ryzee.pngryzeq.png as much as possible whilst trying to shove the minionwave back to her. Syndra has an extremely easy time of pushing minionwaves, so try your best to make sure it doesn't end up under your tower that can end up in her harassing you quite hard. Try to keep the lane frozen in front of your tower (the tower not attacking the minions) and try to get attention from your jungler. In this matchup you can also run 3.png instead of Ghost, as it negates her all-in potential on you after 6 quite heavily.

VS

Taliyah

Easy

This matchup is fairly simple for you as Ryze due to the fact that you have insanely high movementspeed that makes it easy to dodge her taliyahq.png and taliyahwvc.pngs. Much like in the Ahri matchup, you want to avoid locking yourself up standing still in your cast animations, and move between every spell cast to avoid getting hit by Taliyahs' taliyahwvc.png. You want to avoid letting her pushing you in, especially after level 6 when she has her taliyahr.png, as she has faster roams than you and more effective with her ult capturing enemies in for quick kills. Always try to hold the lane in the middle or towards her a bit, making sure that if she does leave the lane she loses at least 2 waves of farm.

VS

Talon

Easy

The only useful thing Talon can do in this matchup apart from getting completely destroyed by you is permanently roaming. His damage output compared to you, and the ranged advantage you have makes this an extremely easy matchup for you. Look to push him in throughout the game with proper vision control to deny him any chance of roaming, and continuously poke him down denying him the chance of an all in. Much like most melee matchups, a ryzee.png on a dying minion that allows it to spread giving your ryzeq.png boosted damage is the way to harass him in lane. Only thing you need to be aware of is if you're trying to roam and he cuts you off with his talone.png from fog of war and full-combos you with his Auto+talonq.pngtalonw.png+auto+talonr.png+auto for like 80% of your hp. Otherwise you have full control in this lane and decide what you want to do (poke him/all-in/roam/take tower etc.)

VS

Viktor

Easy

This matchup is a lot like the Orianna matchup, a strong Viktor makes this lane medium difficulty but the average Viktor player makes this matchup pretty easy for you to win. The biggest point for you to outrade him on is dodging his 2nd part of upgraded viktordeathray.png and not letting him stun you once with his viktorgravitonfield.png. Due to your insanely high movement speed this is an easy task, and allows you to win most trades by kiting him withryzeq.png ryzew.pngryzee.pngryzeq.pngryzee.pngryzeq.png combos throughout the game. Whenever you have a good opportunity to roam, don't be scared to hardpush the lane quickly and move faster than him to another lane. Before he has his 3196.png first upgrade on viktordeathray.png, his ability to push the lane is extremely limited, making it an easier time for you to look for roams.

VS

Xerath

Medium

This is a medium/hard matchup for Ryze due to the range difference of the two champions. Xerath can always choose to poke from outside Ryze's range if he wants. You want to make it difficult for him to push the lane and poke you at the same time, so like the Ahri or LeBlanc matchup you want to stand slightly outside of your own minionwave to make him choose of poking/pushing. Do your best of not getting autoattacked by him once his passive is up due to the insane amount of mana he gets back from it. You win this matchup by having more roam pressure than him, as solo-killing a Xerath is extremely hard if he only focuses on pushing the lane and outfarming. Use your ryzee.pngryzeq.png on the minions to spread to him, or just spread your ryzee.png on the minions and ryzeq.png them to push quickly and look for roams to bot/top.

VS

Yasuo

Medium

This is a tricky matchup for Ryze, but mostly in the earlygame and extreme lategame. In the earlygame Yasuo simply outtrades you due to his yasuowmovingwall.png blocking all of your damage apart from your ryzew.png which is minimal damage. Try to harass him with your ryzee.png on low hp minions and spreading it to him and then using your ryzeq.png, like against most melees. Avoid using your entire combo on him if you know he has yasuowmovingwall.png up, as it will just waste your mana and reward you with nothing. After you have your 3027.png3070.png3158.png combo you should win most trades quite convicingly due to your lower cooldowns, and his yasuowmovingwall.png still being on very long CD. Careful of roaming as Yasuo takes towers very quickly, focus most on pressuring him and keeping him down in farm and levels and getting yourself stronger. When both you and him have full items it can be tricky for you to 1v1 him around minionwaves due to his lifesteal, but you excel much more than him in teamfights.

VS

Ziggs

Medium

This matchup is a lot like the Xerath one, a long-range mage that mostly focuses on pushing the lane and outfarming+outpressuring you. Avoid walking too close and using your ryzew.pngryzee.pngryzeq.png combo as he can easily ziggse.pngziggsq.png+auto you for more damage and followup with another ziggsq.png and ziggsw.png+auto. Your main focus in this matchup is not to trade overly aggressive with him, but moreso keep the lane pushed as best as possible and look for roam opportunities or skirmishes with the enemy jungle. Keep a pinkward in the bottom lane brush to make sure you can pressure bot with vision control, potentially catching him out if he's trying to follow your roams with a ryzeq.pngryzew.pngryzeq.pngryzee.pngryzeq.png combo to burst him and potentially all-in with a followup ryzer.png.

Ryze combos Back to Top

Preface:

It's very important when you play Ryze to utilize your autoattack damage. This extra damage combined with the fact that you can click where you want to move whilst doing your combo (moving between each spell whilst only clicking on the ground where you want to move once) makes your Ryze play much more effective and smoother. The combos I will list don't include the autoattacks, but you want to do them after every 2 spells usually (e.g Auto+E+Q+Auto). It's also important to note that there's not a set combo for Ryze to utilize, but you have to be proactive and clever with your spell usage. As an example, if there are 3 enemies stacked chasing you, it's much better to use your E 2x times and then blasting them with your Q for movementspeed+insane AoE damage instead of using E>W>Q combo on one person. Be understanding of your passive movementspeed+shield and when you actually need it, if it's not needed in a situation then using an extra Q for damage is usually the correct choice.

Poke combo: ryzeq.pngryzee.pngryzeq.png (Q>E>Q)
This is the bread and butter combo for when there's no minions around and you want to poke the enemy laner quickly and don't need the W to lock them down.

Secured poke combo: ryzew.pngryzee.pngryzeq.png(W>E>Q)

This combo is used when you want to quickly get the movementspeed+shield from your passive and disengage+do good damage to the enemy. One of the combos you use most on Ryze. You can add an extra Q before the W if you are certain that you will be in range of your W after the Q is cast.

Setup combo: ryzee.pngryzew.pngryzeq.png(E>W>Q)

This is the combo you want to use when you are confident in the followup of your teammates damage and want the extended W duration over the extra Q damage. Use this combo if your jungler is ganking your lane 9/10 times.

Full damage combo: ryzeq.pngryzee.pngryzeq.pngryzew.pngryzeq.pngryzee.pngryzeq.png(Q>E>Q>W>Q>E>Q)

This is the full damage combo of Ryze that does the most damage in the shortest period of time. You only use this combo if someone runs in to you, as not using your W after your first Q is pretty greedy. Only use it if you know that you can get a Q>E>Q combo before you can W.

How to use your ult Back to Top

What seperates a really good Ryze from a great one is his use of ryzer.png. In this section I will try to explain different uses and in what ways you optimally want to use it, but most of it comes down to personal experience with the champion. There are so many crazy and interesting ways to use Ryze's ultimate that you have to play him a lot yourself to see and understand them.

The most standard way to use Ryze's ryzer.png is to cut off escapes or put your team/yourself in a better position to get a kill/objective. Before you use your ult as Ryze you have to consider several factors;

1) Do I know where all the enemies are?
2) Is there an instant threat to me/my allies when we take the ult that is greater than the pressure we can apply to them?
3) If we get the kill(s), are we in a position to get an objective after?
4) Is the reward worth the risk?

If you can answer these questions in your mind before you use your ult, and you consider the risk worth the potential reward, you should use your ult to reposition and go ham. In the first video you see Tockers on Ryze seeing an opportunity to catch out the enemy ADC that is split from his team, and he instantly moves his entire team and himself with the ryzer.png to get a free kill to pressure Baron.

Something similar is seen in this clip by Ryu when he played in H2K. He immediately realized that the threat of the enemy 3 stack was much less than what his team could offer, due to the enemy Sivir being the only source of damage. Even though they didn't get the enemy jungler as well due to a great tunnel-system by Mountain, it secured them the Baron and put them in a better situation to win the game.

Another use of the Ryze ryzer.png is a less used phenomenon currently, as teams and players haven't figured out how to consistently use it for good results. This use is the ability to move friendly minions to other lanes to increase siege potential. Let's say you have the Baron buff and you are sieging top inhibitor tower, but the enemy has a 51.png that has put up 5 traps infront of the tower making the siege extremely difficult, the correct way to re-direct your siege would be for you as 13.png to use your ryzer.png to move your Baron buffed minions+teammates to the midlane and start chipping down on that tower. Keep thinking about risk/reward and potential ways to move your allies+minions throughout the game, and you are bound to improve the way you use your ryzer.png. Other than that it's just practice and testing that will make you a better Ryze player in regards to your ult, don't be afraid to make mistakes. By making mistakes you can easily re-assess a similar situation in the future.

A cool trick you can do with Ryze is the ryzer.png3157.png combination, where you are in the stasis from Zhonyas and move with your ult. Here is a 200IQ clip from Pobelter (credit from his stream twitch.tv/pobelter) that shows how to do it.

Here is a great breakdown by Riot Jatt (credit goes to Riot and Jatt) on how pro's use Realm Warp.
