Summoner Spells Back to Top

180.png

Introduction to Summoner Spell Choices

The summoner spell choice is related to your keystone. The most used keystone for Ryze is Summoner%20Specialist.png?width=32 so you can actually adapt your summoner spell on the needs of the game you are playing.

So most of the time you will start with a summoner and then switch to another adapting to the situations presented.

Obviously if instead, you are picking Phase%20Rush.png?width=32 or Arcane%20Comet.png?width=32 or Summon%20Aerie.png?width=32, you should pick spells accordingly to the enemy comp, with a strong preference on 12.png
179.png

Starting spells

14.png Most of the time i like to run ignite. I like the fact that it gives you kill pressure and since ryze is pretty good a setting ganks with his ryzew.png your ignite could be crucial to finishing off a kill.

7.png The spell i would start with if i'm vs an early game monster and also an early game jungler.

1.png I would start cleanse if i'm versus some early game threaths like (127.png 4.png 60.png 33.png). Basically champions that can lock you down leaving you no chance to escape.

179.png

Usefull spells to switch to

12.png Getting back to the lane after a gank to not lose minions, splitting and tping, putting pressure on the map

14.png You can keep it if it's helping you getting kills and if you feel no need on some other spells

6.png If you need more mobility

3.png Probably the best spell for teamfights

New Runes Back to Top

180.png

Kleptomancy.png?width=64 Unsealed Spellbook

I feel like this is currently the best choice for ryze. It's also the most picked and the most used by the majority of players and the majority of pro-players aswell.

179.png
Minion%20Dematerializer.png?width=32 vs Biscuit%20Delivery.png?width=32

I prefer Minion%20Dematerializer.png?width=32 but Biscuit%20Delivery.png?width=32 is still valuable and usefull in hard lanes or if you are not confident enough.

179.png
Other viable keystone are Phase%20Rush.png?width=32 Arcane%20Comet.png?width=32 Summon%20Aerie.png?width=32 but i still feel they are inferior compared to Summoner%20Specialist.png?width=32.

First skill point

ryzee.png It's the best start for the lanephase

ryzew.png IF you invade and IF you can catch and kill one enemy you take this at level 1

179.png

Second skill point

ryzeqwrapper.png Is the usual pick

ryzew.png Is great and helpful if your jungler wants to gank or vs hard matchup where you don't want to push

ryzee.png If you started W

179.png

To max R or not?

The first point of ryze ryzer.png isn't really that usefull since the range of it is pretty small and it takes basically the same time to teleport you or to walk directly to your enemies. For this reasons people used not to max it until later on.

I suggest you to still TAKE your ryzer.png at level 6 for 2 reasons:

  • It can still be useful to teleport and skip walls while ganking.
  • It can be used to juke ganks and teleport to safety.

180.png

1027.png Starting item

You want to get your 3070.png ASAP. That's why this is the most used start on Ryze.

179.png

3070.png > 3010.png Core items

3070.png ASAP. After that a Catalyst that you will upgrade.

179.png

3027.png > 3003.png Core Items

3027.png You want to finish this ASAP. After that most of the time you will upgrading your 3070.png into 3003.png > 3040.png.

179.png

3158.png vs 3047.png vs 3111.png

Usually you want to 3158.png. In case you are facing certain champion (eiether heavy ap/cc champ or a lot of autoattackers) 3047.png or 3111.png are fine choices.

179.png

3089.png Usually your next buy, this will boost your damage the most.

3135.png At this point of the game enemies will have a bit of magic resist. And even if they don't this is the item that will boost your damage even more.

3157.png Probably the best defensive ap choice

3102.png You might wanna buy this item if you are having trouble vs champions like 1.png105.png45.png.

3151.png Pretty GOOD buy vs tanks/hp stacking champions such as 31.png 113.png 14.png 154.png

3165.png Morello is a huge buy vs healing comps. It's still an efficient items

VS

Ahri

Medium
  • Positioning is the key to this lane. Stay behind minions to not get it by ahriseduce.png, but also stay a bit to the side so she will not be able to farm and harrass you with ahriorbofdeception.png
  • In general just be careful after 6 to potential all-ins, even tho you it should be hard to her to 100/0 you because of your passive and eventually 3111.png

VS

Akali

Medium
  • Harrass her as much as possible pre 6
  • Try to bounce your ryzee.png-ryzeqwrapper.png to her, she has to be in melee range to lasthit creeps
  • You might want to rush an early 1057.png

VS

Anivia

Hard
  • One of the worst matchup for ryze
  • You gotta be careful since she will fish for flashfrost.png
  • Ask for your jungler to gank her early
  • After 6 try to turn the lane into a farm fest because you won't be able to trade with her
  • crystallize.png > flashfrost.png if anivia is good you have to also respect her wall range

VS

Annie

Medium
  • Pretty much a 'Try to not get bursted down matchup'
  • Try to shove her early so she has to waste stuns and autos to farm
  • Be really careful after level 6 infernalguardian.png
  • Actually an early 3111.png is a nice choice

VS

Aurelion Sol

Easy
  • Pretty easy matchup lanewise
  • Your ryzew.png totally counter his aurelionsolw.png
  • You can actually match his pushing power so you will make difficoult for him to roam around

VS

Azir

Hard
  • This matchup is hard if Azir is competent, he can just harrass you from far and you have to correctly position around his soldier to not get chunked down
  • His azirqwrapper.png has a pretty long cooldown early on so try to bait him to use it
  • Ask for ganks since your ryzew.png can literally block his azirw.png>azirewrapper.png escape

VS

Brand

Medium
  • This matchup is all about baiting his brandw.png and dodgning his brandw.png brandq.png
  • If you can shove him just do it, you will force him to use spells to farm
  • Ask for ganks pre-6 after 6 you have to be really carefull on not getting 1v2'ed by his brandr.png
  • Brand has a weak waveclear so try to push him later on

VS

Cassiopeia

Medium
  • Could be an hard matchup if you fuck up the first levels
  • Respect his level 2 powerspike and if you have to leave some cs
  • Her longtrades are way better than yours so if you want to trade with her do a quick ryzee.png ryzew.png ryzeqwrapper.png and back off.
  • She needs time to waveclear and she also need spells to waveclear so pushing her out is a great way of not getting harrassed

VS

Corki

Medium
  • He has great damage and it's hard to itemize against
  • Ask for early ganks
  • Push him out if you can
  • Remember that your ryzer.png is usefull since he has no cc, if things are looking bad you can just start casting it away

VS

Diana

Easy
  • Early game you are the bully
  • Try to build some Magic resist 3102.png and/or 3111.png

VS

Ekko

Medium
  • The matchup is pretty easy itself unless you fuck up something
  • Be really aware of his level 2 powerspikeekkoe.png ekkoq.png
  • Short trade with him with ryzew.png ryzee.png ryzeqwrapper.png
  • Be carefull when he is missing, always expect a ekkow.png from the fog of war
  • Do not get baited by his ekkor.png and do not fully commit if he has it up

VS

Fizz

Medium
  • Pre 6 you are the bully
  • Be really carefull of your fizzr.png, it's always fine to 4.png it
  • 3157.png 3102.png are both good items to counter him so consider them

VS

Galio

Easy
  • Should be an easy matchup since he is melee and his kit is quite telegraphed
  • Be really careful if he start to channel his galiow.png he likely wants to 4.png on you and it's pretty certain a gank is coming
  • Be really careful when roaming, always consider his galior.png followup

VS

Karma

Medium
  • Karma is actually strong early on, do not trade with her early unless she has cd's
  • She has a good teamfight potential
  • Your waveclear is faster than her so after some items you can keep shoving her out
  • Ganks are always welcomed

VS

Karthus

Medium
  • Sidestepping his karthuslaywastea1.png is still the main priority in lane
  • Short trading him with ryzew.pngryzee.pngryzeqwrapper.png is a good tool
  • Your passive ryzeqwrapper.png proc also gets you out of his karthuswallofpain.png slow easily

VS

Kassadin

Medium
  • His nulllance.png is rather annoying but manageable
  • He is melee and pre6 he is fairly weak so you might want to try to expoit this
  • Ganking him pre 6 is kinda easy so just ask your jungler to do so
  • netherblade.png restores way more mana if it strikes a champion so always keep your distance when trading with him
  • Remember that his nulllance.png cancels channelings so it will nullify your ryzer.png

VS

Katarina

Medium
  • Be really carefull on his dagger positions
  • Early on she's pretty easy to manage
  • A good thing to do vs kata is to keep one charge of your rune up so you can actually easy escape and shield her damage if she decides to jump on you
  • If she decide to katarinar.png you just run out of the range of it. You have no tools to interrupt it

VS

Kayle

Medium
  • This lane will mostly turn into a farm fest
  • You can short trade with her but you can't long trade with her due to her higher dps
  • After level 6 she becomes pretty hard to kill judicatorintervention.png
  • Like most of the matchup, early ganks are strongly welcomed

VS

LeBlanc

Medium
  • You gotta play this matchup smart because she actually has a lot of damage.
  • LB is pretty bad at clearing waves so forcing her under tower will relief pressure and also will force her to use spells to farm
  • I suggest you to rush 3111.png

VS

Lissandra

Medium
  • Try to not position behind your minions, if you do so she will get free harrass damage with her lissandraq.png
  • Her kit is pretty telegraphed and she actually have to get close to you
  • Her spells have a really long cd so you will win extended trades due to your dps
  • Like most of the matchup, early ganks are strongly welcomed since her lissandrae.png has a 22 seconds cd early on and also you can stop it with your ryzew.png

VS

Lux

Medium
  • Similar to brand she will try to luxlightstrikekugel.png you and the wave at the same time so do not stay near your minions or inside the wave
  • Dodge her luxlightbinding.png
  • You can bait her luxlightstrikekugel.png by pretending to walk into her and then backing up

VS

Malzahar

Medium
  • Malz shove early game is kinda weak especially if you constantly kill his malzaharw.png
  • You really have to play a good vision game by warding around, after 6 every ult could end up in your death because of the enemy jungler

VS

Morgana

Easy
  • Dodge her darkbindingmissile.png and that's pretty much about it, if you eat too many of those you lose the lane
  • Remember to proc your rune charges when she soulshackles.png you

VS

Orianna

Medium
  • Orianna is just stronger than you in lanephase
  • Your pick potential is far superior so you want to look for better backtime/shove and roams
  • In lane be really careful about her orianaizunacommand.png position, move a lot to bait her to cast it

VS

Swain

Medium
  • Swain is just so strong right now
  • Your best bet is to shove him in and roam a lot, trying to take advantages early
  • Early ganks before level 6 are really welcomed against him

VS

Syndra

Hard
  • Syndra is stronger in lane
  • Her only tool to disengage his syndrae.png so once she uses it you can trade with her
  • Set up early ganks with your jungler
  • Try to shove her in later on and roam

VS

Taliyah

Medium
  • She has better waveclear than you trought all lane phase
  • You are actually stronger 1v1 but you have to dodge his taliyahwvc.png
  • Ward around and always ping miss etc. Taliyah best tool is to roam around the map

VS

Talon

Hard
  • Either harrass him lv1 and get him low enough to the point he won't try to lv2 all-in you or don't do anything and play super safe till level 3
  • Rush early armor 3047.png or 3024.png or 3191.png
  • He will just roam, so try to shove the lane as much as possible
  • At level 6 you have to be really careful, he can 100-0 you pretty easily with his talonr.png +14.png. Your best bet it to quickly ryzew.png>ryzee.png>ryzeqwrapper.png out

VS

Twisted Fate

Easy
  • Lanewise i think this matchup should not be that hard for you
  • Things start to get annoying if you let him shove and roam with his destiny.png
  • He wins short trades thanks to his pickacard.png
  • You are way stronger 1v1 in longer trades
  • If he wastes pickacard.png on creeps you can just to face to him and unload your combos to his face
  • You also outscale him pretty hard late in the game

VS

Veigar

Medium
  • Try to bully him early on
  • Dodge his veigareventhorizon.png and veigardarkmatter.png or you will lose trades
  • 3111.png help greatly against him
  • Try to set up ganks early on vs him

VS

Vel'Koz

Medium
  • Just dodge, this lane is literally all about dodging his 3 skillshots.
  • Stay behind minions to avoid velkozq.png
  • Once you have your items just shove and roam since you are way better at roaming around. He also have no escape meaning he will be afraid of blindly following you around the map

VS

Viktor

Medium
  • He wins short trades, so either go in when his viktorgravitonfield.png is down or do not
  • Dodging his viktordeathray.png could be the key to winning this matchup
  • You both spike at the same time, he has more burst than you, but you eventually win longer trades
  • Proc your rune charges to outrun his viktorchaosstorm.png

VS

Xerath

Medium
  • Xerath is another annoying champion where you have to dodge skills
  • If you dodge his xerathmagespear.png you can win trades with him

VS

Yasuo

Medium
  • Yasuo has a better shove and better push potential
  • He's not that strong in early skirmishes since he has no ccs and needs items to spike
  • Shove the lane and roam
  • Be really carefull at his lv 2 powerspike
  • Use minions to you ryzee.pngryzeqwrapper.png bounce since he's melee

VS

Zed

Medium
  • Shoving zed in is a good way to control this lane, he has to either auto lasthit or use all his cd's to push out
  • Dodge his zedq.pngs since it's his mainly damage tool
  • zedw.png has a 22 seconds cooldown, so once he uses it you are free to do whatever you want with him

VS

Ziggs

Hard
  • Ziggs is annoying, his passive up means you can't really outtrade him
  • You only win extended trade but you have to be carefull about his burst

VS

Zilean

Medium
  • Dodge, the double bombo
  • Trades with him are kinda easy
  • Take advatages of your Q rune charge to run out of his slow
  • Do not get baited by his chronoshift.png

VS

Zoe

Medium
  • Zoe matchup is all about dodgnig her zoee.png and zoeq.png
  • She's pretty fast at killing waves
  • You win long trades with her, especially if you dodge her zoee.png

Abilities Explanations & Usage Back to Top

ryzepassive.pngPassive
Ryze P.png

  • Pretty self explanatory ryze speels scale of mana aswell (not as much as they used to do)
  • He gains 5% max mana per 100 AP

  • ryzee.png ryzew.png also charge a rune every time you cast those
  • On ryzeqwrapper.png cast the rune you charged resets. If you had 2 charges you gain a shield and movement speed for 2 secs
  • ryzeqwrapper.png Deals more damage on target marked by ryze ryzee.png

  • If your ryzee.png kills a target it will spread out to nearby enemies (also applying its damage)
  • If a target is already marked with your ryzee.png it will spread out to nearby enemies (also applying its damage)
  • Spell flux also empowers your other skills. ryzeqwrapper.png deals more damage on marked targed and ryzew.png snare will last longer.

127.jpg

Ryze's Role Back to Top

180.png

Ryze Role

Ryze is a dps mage that is also combo reliant. He has high dps compared to other mages and decent waveclear.
Your duel are decent but you don't excel at doing anything. He his pretty good in skirmishes and in catching people out of positiong with his ryzew.png

179.png

Early game

Ryze is not really that great early game but he can manage to hold his own in most matchups. Your goal are to farm well and get your core 3070.png and 3027.png asap.
As said previosly you excel at setting up ganks so working with your jungler is a huge plus for your change of winning.

179.png

Mid game

After your core items you start to spike quite hard. Depending on the enemy combo you can either split push or group. Ryze is pretty versatile. Keep shoving lanes with your ryzee.png ryzee.png ryzeqwrapper.png and look for picks.

179.png

Late game

Ryze is still strong later on. The only problem you will have is playing ryze in teamfights. You have 3 option.

  • Trying to spread your spell flux (this requires a bit of time and most of the time it won't even be possible because of messy teamfights) and q the whole enemy team
  • Trying to catch out an enemy carry out of positiong
  • Peeling for your own carry with ryzee.png ryzew.png and damaging their frontline
The later is the most reliant but it all depends on the situations. Try to think and make the best decision and well be prepared to totally fail a lot of teamfights. You will learn overtime !

127.jpg

Pros & Cons Back to Top

180.png

Pros

  • Challenging to play
  • Point and click cc
  • Easy to setup ganks for
  • Scales fairly well
  • Has good waveclear
179.png

Cons

  • Hard to learn and master (rune charge and combo reliant)
  • Can be totally useless if played uncorrectly
  • Your R can totally fuck up games
  • No dashes
  • It gets reworked every now and then
  • Designed for competitive play, requires quite a lot of teamwork
127.jpg

Combos and Tips Back to Top

180.png

Combos

Long snare: useful if a jungler ganks or if you are trying to get a pick and need the added snare time. Also used in some matchup as a short trade

ryzee.pnge > ryzew.pngw > ryzeqwrapper.pngq

This will also proc your ryzeqwrapper.png passive.

179.png
Short burst: useful for short trading and doing the most amount of damage in the least amount of time

&

Fast escape combo: useful when you get jumped on and you want to quickly get out of a problematic situation

ryzew.pngw > ryzee.pnge > ryzeqwrapper.pngq

This will also proc your ryzeqwrapper.png passive.

179.png

N.B. You can start those combos with an initial ryzeqwrapper.png. Sometimes is worth the added free damage, some other time the time spent to cast the initial ryzeqwrapper.png isn't worth the time since you want to keep the trade short and safe.

179.png
Full dps combo: self explanatory, the ryze dps combo, to use that in a straight 1v1

ryzeqwrapper.pngq > ryzee.pnge > ryzeqwrapper.pngq > ryzew.pngw > ryzeqwrapper.pngq > ryzee.pnge > ryzeqwrapper.pngq

You will not proc your ryzeqwrapper.png passive when performing this combo.

179.png
N.B. Those are the basic combos. Work on those fundamentals. Depending on the situation you can adapt your combos (example: if you need to proc your ryzeqwrapper.png passive to shield yourself in a full dps combo you will change it slightly)

180.png

Tips

  • Having a passive rune charge up can save you from sticky situations.
  • You can bait enemies with your ryzer.png (cast it behind them to pretend you are tping behind them to block an escape route)
  • You can teleport minions with your ryzer.png
  • You can check bushes with your ryzeqwrapper.png
  • In lanephase controlling waves and spreading your ryzee.png is essential. And you can often catch people off guard
