Summoner Spells Back to Top

Smite- You're a jungler so this is a no-brainer.  It's required.  You need it for faster clearing times, buff, dragon, and baron securing.  Get it.

Ignite- I prefer this.  This is very good for adding some extra damage to an enemy during a fight.  If you don't think you can get many attacks on them before they escape, then this is a pretty good option.  It helps to secure kills early but isn't as effective late game.  I still prefer ghost because it helps add more damage and it has more utility, but this is still a very good and common spell on Shaco so it really comes down to personal preference.

Ghost- This is a decent option.  It helps with sticking when you don't have much slow on your E passive especially if the enemy has mobility abilities such as graves or leblanc.  It helps you travel farther while in stealth so you can get through wards well and make it to the gank.  It can also function as a somewhat reliable escape.  You already have a built in flash (Q) so this ability helps in other ways.

Exaust- This spell is fairly situational.  If the other team has a fair number of assassins or bursty champions, then this can help reduce their damage quite a bit for a couple seconds and help you escape.  It also has a slow that can be used when ganking to prevent escape, but that's what your E passive is for so it won't be as effective when stacked with E.  It's really good for dueling or putting on the carry during a team fight to basically trap them for a few seconds.

Flash-  This could be used if you have trouble disengaging enemies or are just more comfortable with having a great escape in general, but you should really size up your opponent before a fight anyways.  Shaco already has a built in flash so I'd pick something with some more kill potential.

Masteries Back to Top

I prefer Thunderlord's Decree.  Within ferocity, the keystones just don't give enough burst necessary for a gank.  Fervor of battle needs many auto attacks to stack up and if Shaco's in combat for that long then he's probably about to die.

This leaves me with the Cunning tree.  Shaco can't reliably take out 30% of someone's health in 2 seconds to get Stormraider's Surge.  However landing 3 auto attacks in a row for a burst is much easier.  It scales off of bonus AD and Shaco builds a lot of that.

Precision within the Cunning tree is quite nice because as previously stated Shaco does a lot of hybrid damage to champs.

Start placing boxes at 0:40 (4 boxes max) preferably at red buff.  At lvl 2 take Q if you're expecting counter jungling or going for a lvl 2 gank.  If not then get E for the ease of clearing.  don't cast E while in jungle often to keep the passive up.

Your W (boxes) are useful as wards and tanking monsters in camp.  In combat try placing one a couple hundred units behind an enemy while you're still invisible during a gank to cut off escape options.  It works about 40% of the time, but it never costs you any time due to enemy's delayed reaction time.

Q gives off an orange puff of smoke even in the fog of war so sometimes the enemy will see it.

When in combat don't cast E until you think you can't get anymore auto attacks off on the champ to keep the passive on them.

Easy to forget but don't neglect the backstab passive especially on that guaranteed Q crit.

R is somewhat straightforward but hard to get the hang of.  Hold ALT and right click to command it.  On top of killing champs it's useful for taking objectives such as towers and dragon.  It gives you 0.5 seconds of invulnerability so use it to dodge channeled spells like Karthus and Caitlyn ults.

VS

Kha'Zix

Hard

He can burst you down just as easily as Lee so watch out.  He'll also jump over walls to chase you after decieve so escape can be difficult.  Try to juke him during invisibility.

VS

Lee Sin

Hard

He's the only real problem I have when jungling.  He is a bruiser, bursty, can stick to you, escape from you, and reveal you during invisibility two different ways.  Everything about him counters you.  Now you know why he's such a pain in the ass.  Avoid fighting him on your own whenever possible.  Every other match up is pretty manageable compared to him.  Unfortunately he's a popular champion so beware.

VS

Udyr

Hard

He can counter jungle very well and likely out duel you at early levels.  He has a lot of movement speed so you have to be smart about using your deceive.

VS

Vi

Hard

She's a great duelist and can chase you over walls

Closing Notes Back to Top

All in all Shaco is easily one of the hardest champs to master so be patient.  I'm still working on it lol.  Something important to mention is that Shaco fights when he chooses.  Very few champs can force him into a fight (Lee Sin).  So choose your fights carefully and get good at sizing up your enemies before going in. A lot of them can easily kill you so there's no point in fighting if you know you're going to die.  He's also one of the few champs that can set things up the way he wants so take advantage of it.  Often times split pushing and pressuring enemy towers is just as good if not better than a kill, so you don't always have to beeline it for the nearest enemy champion.

When ganking you don't always have to kill the enemy, although that's the best outcome.  Sometimes you just have to make yourself known and the enemy will stop pushing your ally's lane so hard.  Shaco has a very psychological effect on the enemy because of his scary and superb ganks coming from out of nowhere.  The enemy will play more conservatively by just knowing a Shaco's on the other team and thus lose a little bit of farm and spend more money on wards so they won't be caught out of position.

Shaco is primarily an assassin champion so helping out lanes is your most important role early game.  You can build some jungle items but not too many as this will hurt your ganking.  Late game he needs to focus on crushing carries in fights, split pushing lanes, and securing baron, dragon, and buffs.
