Summoner Spells Back to Top

Depending on how aggressive you want to be in lane you should take either flash4.png or ignite14.png. Shen has really good burst early game and I like to capitalize on it by taking the ignite and harassing early to get the First Blood. Shen still has his taunt to get out of danger if you do take this route. If you do want the extra escape then take flash. There are pros and cons to both. If you know your opponent in lane will be building lifesteal items or has lifesteal as part of their kit, then I suggest taking ignite. Also if your mid laner does not have ignite then it is good that you take it do you can place it on the ADC when a team fight breaks out. If your mid laner has ignite it is a coin flip and if 2 people on your team have it then I would go with flash over ignite.

Always take teleport12.png. There is a great degree of freedom that you have with it. Normally Shen has to keep the lane pushed to have the time to ult down, back to base, and then return to top lane. If the lane is pushed then you can use the ult and then have the teleport as a back up. If you need to save someone and then teleport immediately back to save your lane you can do that as well. Just having teleport in general allows you the freedom to ult to save someone and not lose pressure on your lane at the same time.

Masteries Back to Top

This again is just my usual. Fit this to whatever you prefer. I play Shen to trade a lot more early game and then be a massive annoying damage dealer as well as a tank in the end game.

I take Vampirism over Natural Talent because Shen does not do as much AP damage anymore. It is more based on his Q AAs. Which those can do a nice bit of damage on their own. So I get a little health regen from them.
Courage of the Colossus is also viable. Just have to make sure that you hit your stun. Cause that's the only cc you have. It works nicely cause you can save your W for after your colossus shield wears off. Or you can put W up right away and then save the shield from it once the taunt is over.

Actually now, with the rework, I would level up E before W. This just depends on your lane matchup and preference though. If you are against a Darius or someone very poke heavy and tanky, then I would take the extra stacks in W cause it lowers the CD and you can bring it up more often for trades. If I was to max W then I would take Grasp of the Undying.

If I was to max E then I would take Colossus. Cause it would give me the shield for more trading potential.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Easy lane start. Doran's for extra Ki damage
Good for early lane bullies who you know you will be trading with a lot

Core Items

Situational Items

Take these boots if there is not a lot of CC on the enemy team

So the items I generally get them in order from left to right finishing the Liandry's Torment 3151_32.png from Haunting Guise 3136_32.png when I go back to base with a whole ton of gold. Sometimes I play around in the order, but generally the main thing from that list of 6 taking Ninja Tabi 3047_32.png over Mercury Treads 3111_32.png. Only on the occasion that the enemy is extremely ahead of me do I take armor or magic resist first. The only problem with doing that is taking the magic pen items later, that I have found, is that it hurts the boost from your items. They do not have as much effect, but they still do well.
Yes this build is not standard! I do not think it will hit meta any time soon, but it definitely  works if by having some tank and damage dealing. So you play like Rumble as an annoyance damage tank.

If you would like a more legit build look below!!!! This build is really iffy now since Shen does not scale as much on AP. Before the Vorpal Blade would do so much damage. Not so much any more.

VS

Darius

Medium

This matchup is very weird. Darius definitely makes it hard to keep up your health with his bleed so definitely max Feint second so the bleeding doesn't hurt as bad. Other than that watch out to make sure he doesn't AA you too much or get you low enough to ult and kill you straight up.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Easy

I find this to be a very easy match up. Especially early game. A lot of Mundo's moves take his HP from him and taking ignite completely shuts down his ult sadism.png. Get some boots/stay behind the minions to dodge those cleavers infectedcleavermissilecast.png, then harass with Twilight Assaultshenvorpalstar.png and you got it.

VS

Fiora

Medium

Fiora is just going to come down to a skill showdown. Hit your taunts under the turret and use your Ki Strike/AA/Vorpal Blade to consume her Parry so the turret shots can hit her full force. Once she hits 6 watch out for the burst from her ult and be sure to have Ignite to place on her as she gets low so the amount of HP she regains is a lot less. (Side note. I have popped ignite on Fiora before she started her ult and the ignite killed her mid ult so it can be helpful).
Don't try to duel her too much, but be smart and poke with the Vorpal Blade until she gets low and then hit her with the taunt for the kill.

VS

Garen

Medium

Garen varies. He either goes bruiser tank with Armor Pen or he goes full on tank with little damage. Either way you have to poke him the while time so his passive doesn't start. Use your Vorpal Blade to help restore your attack while poking him as you farm. The only thing that is hard is his silence and then watch out for his ult. Since Shen's passive runs off of HP and Garen's ult does more damage the more HP you have gone.... There can be some damage there.

But other then that it is a fairly easy match up. Just farm hard and know there will not be many kills to be had in the top lane unless someone gets a little greedy and tower dives. Just keep the lane even in CS and in team fights you both have large effects there so it comes down to a skill play.

VS

Nasus

Medium

NOT Recommended!
You can poke Nasus early but there is no way to hold him back once he starts farming his Q. As soon as that happens it is game over. Rely on lots of early ganks from your jungler to help kill him and keep him from farming. Be sure to save your ignite for when he pops his ult.
Shen's best chance at hurting Nasus is to Taunt him and combo with Ki Strike and Vorpal Blade. This does some damage early game, but as soon as he goes back to by magic resist there is not a whole lot that you can do to stop him. Don't be afraid to ask the jungler to camp if you are not able to control the Q stacking. JUST HOLD HIM BACK WITH WHATEVER POKE YOU CAN!!!!

VS

Tryndamere

Medium

I always find this matchup really hard. Tryndamere wants to AA you so taunting him will just increase his rage bar and cause him to crit you more. With him criting you all the time any armor that you build will be useless and you might as well just get health to try and survive. I would not suggest doing this at all unless you are confident that the Tryndamere has no idea what they are doing cause one taunt from you and two or 3 crits later and there is a dead Shen.
Rush a Thornmail. The moment you get it then his crits hurt him too. If he gets early kills on you then it's really tough.
I would take shenfeint.png early in a game with a tryndamere.

YOUR INPUT WELCOME! Back to Top

I would love some input on this. Just let me know what you have for me and I will take it and see if it works with the idea of Magic Pen Shen. I am always looking to learn so let me know what you have for me. And more matchups will be coming so feel welcome to put in input for them as well

GL HF all. Happy gaming.

More Legit Build Back to Top

If you are looking to actually play Shen and not troll with him, which I often like to do, then you might want to build something more tanky. Your first item would be Sunfire Cape3068.png and that will greatly increase your damage when dashing and tauntingshenshadowdash.png in to perform your Ki Strikeshenpassive.png.

After that I would build boots, most often always a Merc Treads3111.png. The only reason I would take Ninja Tabi3047.png is if they have no (or very little) hard CC on their team, barely any AP, and neither of them in my lane.

From there I would build into a Spectre's Cowl3211.png, especially if the jungler is AP. Depending on how the team fighting is going on and how fed the AP on their team is I would then either finish the Spectre's Cowl3211.png to a Spirit Visage3065.png and then build a Thornmail3075.png or take the Thornmail3075.png first and then finish the Spirit Visage3065.png second.

Once I have the first 4 items (3068.png,3111.png,3065.png,3075.png) I then take the situation into account.
If there is a lot of AP then I build into a Banshee's Veil3102.png or if I just need more health to stay in the fights longer I get a Warmog's Armor3083.png.

And then my last item, if I don't have it already I have a Warmog's Armor3083.png, I get it. If I do then I either get the Banshee's Veil3102.png or a Randuin's Omen3143.png based on who is fed.

Example Final Build: 3068.png, 3111.png OR 3047.png, 3065.png and 3075.png (taken in either order), 3083.png or  3102.png or 3143.png (can be taken in any preferential order)
