Summoner Spells Back to Top

Smite is for the jungle, obviously. Flash should 90% of the time be used for making offensive plays, as you are a tank and should be able to survive most engages anyway. You shouldn't need to run often. Taunting can save allies, instead of running away and getting you all chased and killed. Also if you really need to get away, you can usually dash over walls.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

The order of importance of things to get. I like getting Bami's Cinder early on because it helps with clearing jungle, a bit of added damage in ganks and you'll have even more sustain in the jg so you can go help pick up a kill or two. I like the boots after this because by then, many of the opposing team will have boots as well. Being able to catch up and get that taunt off will make you effective. If ganks aren't available and all lanes are pushed, I'd say finish off your machete first. This will allow you to get more gold per large monster killed.

Core Items

Cinderhulk is obvious- the huge health bonus plus aoe damage is what will help you 1) get tanky and 2) do damage! Why merc treads so fast? Well this is dependant- you can start building your locket or thornmail first but i prefer merc treads just because i tend not to have big problems with ad damage early on after my cinderhulk- and the extra movement speed will help you catch up to slower adc's and get the taunt in.
These are the two items you will get after your cinderhulk. You have to be the judge to which you need more. You can also get one of these before completing your merc treads. Allow me to explain why I get thornmail usually before a randuins, because some people think that it's too soon and not needed. First off, an early thornmail will just not let any ad melee champ slow down your snow balling. Also, you are taunting people... which means that they HAVE to attack you. They're already doing reduced damage to you, and you have your shield. So when you taunt someone, essentially this is making your taunt into a high damage dealer. They will be essentially beating their head on a wall vs you with this. They'll be only hurting themselves. It's great fun. The ageis will just make your team tankier in early team fights. Be careful though, lockets don't stack. Ask you support if they will be getting this. If they do, then get spirit visage.
This is your goal for mid- late game. These items will give you stupid ammounts of tank, along with the locket's shield allowing you to make your adc tankier. You can taunt to save, ult and do whatever you want to help make your adc impossible to kill. Randuins on top to just slow down the champs will make you one heck of an annoying engage and protector.
This is my favorite late game build as of now. You're plenty of tank, and the tri force will help you get some extra little bit of everything. If I'm the only tank and the other team is still shredding me, I'll swap it out what is needed. Banshees and Spirit Visage are popular swaps for it. However I find the utility and extra damage output of the tri force making it an all around excellent choice.

Situational Items

Spirit visage is a great replacement for the locket if your support is already getting that. It's one of my favorite items on shen but you usually won't get this and the locket. It gives you CD so you get off your taunt sooner, as well. The only concern I have with CD is that you tend to let go of watching your energy when you have your shield and blade up so often. Be careful to be watching that along with your ki strike so you can taunt again when it's back up. Trinity force is a very popular last item on Shen. It gives him all he needs to be even stronger. It gives him tankiness, speed boost, attack speed and all that the sheen brings to the table. If you have another tanky champ on the team I would recommend going trinity force. The Warmogs isn't as popular on Shen after the nerfs (riot plz) but is still a good item on him. I think you get much more out of a trinity force or rylai's though. Rylais- fantastic item on shen. It gives him ap so he does a little more damage, but the real bonus is the slowing effect. Wit's end and abyssal scepter I have almost never gotten but both work on Shen. BOTRK is a descent item too if you have enough tank on the team.
Also a great choice if the other team has a lot of CC or a strong engage. I'm actually favoring this right now, as I feel that in the tank meta I usually have another team mate who has a lock down and can follow up with my taunt. The extra CD on the spirit visage isn't as useful right now. Get this and stay alive. It'll allow you to get through some of that "tank meta cc" slows that might be trying to peel for their ap mid or adc.

This is more of just a "busy work" lane. It's actually pretty easy if you poke him with your vorpal blade so he can't regen health as fast. However, any descent garen will how to play passive and avoid that. Also, your blade is a great farming tool so you might lose a bit to that. Overall more of just an annoying lane. You can beat him 1v1 early on.

VS

Gnar

Hard

Up to level 6 you can trade with him decently. After 6 try to steer clear and not engage. He will beat you. Get some early ganks to help shut him down.

VS

Hecarim

Easy

Oh gosh I love seeing a Hecaraim lock in. If you go top vs him, its a garunteed win. He can't hurt you. Start dorans shield and q. Once you hit 3 you will basically gain life off of him if you taunt and ki strike with a vorpal blade on him. It's really funny to see how this guy who usually is a big lane bully just get thrown around by shen. If you are jungle, be sure to time your taunt for when he is in his E. This will hopefully stop his escape, as a lot of top hec's take ghost or something other than flash. They won't have an immediate escape from you and theyre screwed.

VS

Irelia

Easy

This is easy- medium. Start dorans shield and get some armour early on.

VS

Jarvan IV

Medium

With the right armour you should be able to 1v1 him IF YOU'RE SMART. Just get good son!

VS

Jayce

Medium

I'd try to avoid this match up.

VS

Katarina

Easy

Oh, the counters... You will make people never want to play her again if you are patient and use your taunt when she ults!

VS

Kayle

Hard

VS

Kennen

Hard

This should be one of the hardest lanes for Shen, but if you land the taunt then you should have a descent chance. Try not to fight much and time your ganks for when kennen goes into his electric ball thing (yea don't remember what that's called!

VS

Lee Sin

Medium

Not a suggested counter to lee, in the end I think that a good lee would beat you. Pre level 6 I'd put money on Shen. After that you best just avoid fighting.

VS

Lissandra

Hard

Yea, no.

VS

Malphite

Easy

Easy lane as in nothing will ever happen. You can out damage him, but you'll never kill him!

VS

Maokai

Medium

skill match up, favored in maokai.

VS

Master Yi

Easy

Rush a good ol thornmail. He won't be having much fun.

VS

Mordekaiser

Medium

Against a morde that doesn't know how to use his shield- you'll win. Against a good morde- try to get that window of opportunity when his shield is down and you can do some damage.

VS

Nasus

Medium

I wouldn't go shen vs a nasus. Just no. You can harass him way more and try to get him to waste his mana on you, but you won't really ever kill him. It is a good idea to taunt him right before he q's on a siege minion, denying him the gold and stack. That's when I'd harass.

VS

Nidalee

Hard

You won't catch or kill her, and her harass is just annoying.

VS

Olaf

Hard

Good counter for Shen. He will destroy you.

VS

Pantheon

Hard

Pantheon's passive counters your Ki strike altogether, so your damage output will be minimal.

VS

Poppy

Medium

As for how little poppy is seen these days, I can't give an accurate rating on this. However with the %health damage she does I would say poppy could be a tough lane. She's a mana whore so watch that closely.

VS

Quinn

Hard

You can't catch her, and she out pokes you.

VS

Renekton

Medium

Renekton is a boss. Pre level 6, you cant beat him unless you really watch the cd on his timers and he's wasting it. However level 8 and up you should be able to fight him alright (not saying you'll kill him). I'd still try to avoid him unless in team fights, as you're both tanks and he will be able to out damage if you don't have the right build.

VS

Rengar

Medium

Depends on how good the rengar is :) I'd favor a good rengar, as he has more potential to make plays.

VS

Riven

Easy

VS

Tryndamere

Medium

If you time your taunt correctly, you can stop him from ulting.

VS

Udyr

Hard

You lose.

VS

Vayne

Easy

Shen can help assassinate her easily.

VS

Vi

Medium

She'll out damage you. But I don't find her much a problem honestly.

VS

Volibear

Easy

You can win this match up in top lane.

VS

Warwick

Hard

A good war wick will beat you.

VS

Xin Zhao

Medium

He can out damage you and heals faster. I'd avoid attack him, however with a bit of help you can take him down.

Jungle Path Back to Top

90% of the time you will start gromp. Gromp is a good friend of yours who wants to help shen in the jungle. His poison will help with clear speed, and will allow him to finish up at red thus giving your ganks a bit more damage. You should finish with jg path to start red with your smite almost up ready to help you out on that. If you use both pots and use your shield and q right, you should be 3/4 health and ready to gank. I usually gank bot first going through bushes in lane. My main objective is to burn a flash. If you have a leona bot, the ganks are unreal. Nami, Thresh, any one with an early game descent stun/knock up works best with him. The lock down time might not be enough to kill the enemy adc/sup, but they will be forced to flash out to survive. I then hit golems and should have 1/4 to half health left. 70% of the time I will feel confident in a second gank bot. Same thing, through the bushes. I tend to avoid mid ganks early on since you don't have a ton of health or magic resist yet. However you be the judge. After that, I go top and get gromp again then blue. I should hit level 4 and be ganking all lanes.

Intro Back to Top

Shen has been my favorite champ since end of season 1 when I started playing. I've always loved making a last second save with his ult, making a 5 enemy taunt and just tanking for days! His kit allows him to heal, shield, taunt and a global ult that can turn around a team fight completely. The unique plays that he can make have made him my favorite tank to play.

Shen has always been considered a top champ. I won't disagree, I take him top all the time. However I feel like with the current meta he truly shines (/glitters like a vampire) in the jungle. His sustain in the jungle with a good leash, proper use of your blade, shield and smite can let him gank bot at full health at level 3 after taking red. I've heard that his clear is slow, but I disagree. It's not the fastest but it's in no way as slow as an alistar (oh please never again). He can gank 2-3 times before having to go back for the first time, allowing him to help give his laners a huge early advantage. Burning an enemy flash or heal early can allow your laners to be more aggressive if they so choose. Also, with him in the jungle his ult actually works better. You don't get interupted during your ult (darius, malphite I'm looking at you... every time dang it) also you don't leave a lane unexposed. HIs chase is better with the smite as well.

Where does Shen best fit in the elo's? I was plat elo area in season 2 for a short while (ended in gold) and am currently in gold now. I've played from bronze to plat players and I feel that Shen jg fits best in silver- mid gold elo. He can work higher up, but people get smarter and don't bunch up as often in team fights (harder to land that 3 man taunt). It's harder to get that assassinating taunt on an adc or ap mid etc. Yes, he can still work! But his ability to carry goes down significantly. He can work in bronze but Shen is very much a team fight champ. If you don't have a team that knows how to work with a shen and an assassinating taunt- your dive in and dash will be for nothing and with no focus the game will be chaos. Silver they tend to get the hang of focusing and can help focus those that you taunt. You engage the fights and they follow. Gold+ they do it even better.  With the given meta of tank jg, Shen isn't what I would call the best pick due to lack of huge cc such as amu or sejuani. However, I am best with Shen so I go him anyway. In solo que it's mostly about how good you are with a champ. Watch the pros, they can make any one seem "op". I would reccomend getting a high cc support or top lane if you're going to go Shen. His engage range with his taunt isn't that great, so getting in close is sometimes quite difficult. A good pick off is what Shen shines at. A blitz or thresh pull + shen taunt is an excellent example. Lock them down for a good while. Nautilus also works great with Shen. I wouldn't say that Shen is the best vs a ton of tank and CC. I would reccomend him for medium CC, and against high damage, low health melee. They have to get close to attack, and locking them down for a team mate to kill (or to save them) is what shen is best at. Example, Riven, Fiora, Tryndamere etc. Shen does great vs them.

I'm not saying that I'm the best Shen out there. I'm only posting this because Shen is my bro! He's awesome and I have gotten some bad talk with people saying "shen jg?" those same games I get the "shen is a god" comments. SHEN CAN JUNGLE. AND IT WORKS. The build I have here is what I have found after several years worth of experience playing him works very well. Just give it a try and have some fun :)
