Summoner Spells Back to Top

4.png11.png There is really no alternative to these summoners. You need smite for the jungle, obviously, and flash for your taunt-flash combo.

New Runes Back to Top

Masteries Back to Top

Keystone: Courage of the Colossus

This is the new keystone that replaced Strengh of the Ages and it's way better for Shen as well as for any other Tank with hard CC. The shield is just massive and you can play far more aggressively then befor

Ferocity:

I put 12 points in the Ferocity tree. Fury and Expose weakness is very helpfull for Shen, because he needs Attackspeed and the additional damage is helpfull, when you hit multiple targets with your taunt or later with the AOE-effect of the Hydra. Natural Talent is good for more lategame damage and Battle Trance is ideal for tanks that remain in long fights.

Resolve:

Besides Courage of the Colossus you can choose the other masteries in the Resolve-tree mostly at your personal preference.

Unyielding is not bad for tanks, but with the nerf on Shens HP-regeneration in 6.15, Recovery is maybe a better option.

Explorer is not bad for ganks, but I prefer tough skin, because I mostly gank trough my Ultimate, so I have more use of staying a bit healthier in the jungle.

Even if Shen scales very well on bonus-HP I would recommend Runic Armor over Veteran's Scars. The pure HP is more helpfull in the early game, but Runic Armor shines in the lategame because you get a more massive shield trough your Passive and Courage of the Colossus, more regeneration and more healing from items or teammates.

I would defenetly recommend Perserverance over Insight or Fearless, because even if you're relaint on your flash, it's not that much to ignore this massive amount of HP-regeneration for it, especially with the nerf in 6.15.  Fearless is very good either, especially in ganks an early scirmishes but more usefull for quick in and out-champs.

To take Swiftness or Legendary Guardian, depends heavily on the enemy teamcomb. If you're facing heavy CC-combs, the Tenacity is totally necessary, if not, bonus resistances are very helpfull alongside an HP-heavy build.

shenpassive.png Ki-Barrier (Passive)

STATIC COOLDOWN: 10

After using an ability, Shen shields himself from 50 - 101 (based on level) (+14% bonus health) damage for 2.5 seconds. If the triggering ability successfully affected at least one champion, Ki Barrier's cooldown is reduced by 4 - 7.5 (based on level) seconds.

Befor his rework Shen had a comparable shield as his W. Now it's his passive and its scaling has changed to bonus-HP which made it much more helpfull than the old one, espacially in the lategame, when you have tons of bonus-HP and be able to get it almost every 3 seconds

Most of the time you will not notice the shield at all. To optimise your early jungleclear make sure that you don't use your W when the shield is active because you would just waste it when your W allready blocks every attack from the junglemonsters.

If you have to run away but still get some damage in you back, use your spells to get the shield, even when you don't use them for anything else, it saved me many times. (but on long chases you will run out of energy very fast!)

shenvorpalstar.png Twilight Assault

This ability has many aspects to deal with. At first its just a buff to your autoattacks. The additional %maxHP-damage is very helpfull espacially for your jungleclear and it gives you a strong burst when ganking if you catch some opponent with your taunt.
The second aspect of this ability is the buff you get when the sword collides with an enemy. At first let me say: this additional buff is not neccessary at all costs, its very strong and you should try to get it if possible, but the basic buff is allready strong. Don't bring yourself into a risky situation just for the opportunity to get this buff. In general you will get it automatically just by the way you gank or fight in generall.
At last lets talk about the slow you get together with the additional buff. Try to activate your Q not immediately after your taunt but be sure you are in the best position to hit multiple targets with it if possible.

shenfeint.png Spirit's Refuge

If I should describe this ability i would call it an AOE-Jax-E jaxcounterstrike.png. But unlike that its not bound to the champion itself, but to the sword that you can move with your Q. You can imagine it like a more immobile version of the Orianna-ball. Its very hard to use it properly but most of the time I like to use it this way:

land your taunt --> Q --> AA untill the taunt is over --> if the opponent attacks you, activate W

This is of course most effevtive when the enemy is an AA-based champion. If you gank a mage-midlaner for example its better to save this ability if the enemy-jungler counterganks. In teamfights this ability is most effective if everyone is close together, which is the case at Dragon/Baron-pit most of the time. Try protect your squishy teamates with it, zone your opponents and force them to change positions to your advantage. Sometimes you can leave your sword on escape paths and cover your allies when they flee, even when you are far away.

shenshadowdash.png Shadow Dash

This is the abillity that defines Shen besides his Ultimate. Taunting is one of the strongest types of hard-CC and Shen is not only one of the few champs with a taunt in his kit, but the one with IMO the strongest taunt in the entire game.
It's your main tool when ganking, engaging in teamfights, peeling for your carrys, escaping and doing something usefull in general. That means that you are highly dependent to hit this taunt.

shenstandunited.png Stand United

RANGE: Global
COOLDOWN: 180 / 150 / 120

This is imo one of the strongest utility-spells in the entire game and very defining for Shen as a champion. His whole playstyle is heaviely based on this ability that gives you global influence in the game. Playing against or with a Shen changes the way all other 9 players behave because of this Ultimate.

Most of the time you will use Shens Ultimate to get your teammates out of trouble. That means once you hit level 6 your attention should rest on the minimap and the healthbars of your allies most of the time. To be able to Ult at any moment you should only use your Q for clearing (once you reached level 6 you will not need your W any more). If an opponent overextends or when your laners get ganked you can punish that very hard in combination with your other abilitys.
Besides this you can simply use your Ultimate as a free teleport to get back to a teamfight very quickly. Because you can cancel the teleport you can also use only the shield when you are very near to your ally but maybe on low-HP or when you just want to give an ally a safe escape but not change your own position.
Once I used it also as an escape when I was caught while counterjungleing. I was surrounded by 3 opponents and my dash was on cooldown. But they lacked any hard-CC so they couldn't interrupt my Ultimate.

No matter for which reason you use it, allways reminder that it has a very high cooldown so choose wisely. This needs very high knowledge of the game in general. I've made a short list of which pionts you should think when deciding about when and who you Ult:

  • which lane/champions do you consider to have the highest influnce in the game
  • which opponents do you consider to be the biggest threat to your team
  • which are the most vulnerable chamions in your own and the enemy team
  • which infuence will your lanes get when you ult them followed by a succesfull gank: will they snowball hard, do they need to get motivated, do they need to catch up from falling behind
  • will I have any influnce in general by Ult/ganking (for example dont ult when your ally is escaped allready, stand against 4 full-HP opponents, or can get nuked down no matter if you shield them)
  • are you near enough to just walk to an ally under threat and help him without using your Ultimate

At last, it's your decition who or when you Ult. It should be carefully considered but it's on YOU. Some people may think they can overextend and expect you to Ult them all the time. Tell such people to play safer so you can pay attention on all of your lanes equally. If they flame you, just mute them. Thats a general tip i can give, if you have flaming teammates.

Skillorder

shenvorpalstar.png Twilight Assault is your main source of damage. Take a point in it at level one and max it first.

shenfeint.png Spirit's Refugee is the one-point-wonder of your kit. Take a point on level 2 but allways max it last. Taking points in it only reduces the colldown, but the duration of the dodge-zone remains the same.

shenshadowdash.png Shadow Dash is your tool for strong level-3-ganks. Take a point at level 3 and max it out second. Even if you don't gank I would recommend to skill it at level 3, because you also restore energy from every hit of shenvorpalstar.png Twilight Assault and you will get otherwise out of energy very soon while clearing.

shenstandunited.png Stand United you obviously want to skill at 6, 11, 16.

If your team wants to invade, take shenshadowdash.png Shadow Dash, but only if you see a real chance to catch someone. With you taunting an opponent, it will gonna be allmost a save First Blood for your team, but you will have trouble to clear fast and healthy after. Ask your lanes for a big leash in that case and take shenvorpalstar.png Twilight Assault at level 2 and shenfeint.png Spirit's Refugee at level 3. Then go on maxing your skills like above.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

get this first, since the changes to Cinderhulk you don't need an early Tiamat for clearing

Core Items

Still the best offensive item on Shen but not as much of a must-buy than befor the midseason. It's probably best to get it as third or fourth item
    Boot options
    Best core items
    Best last items

Situational Items

    Armor options
    MR options

3748.png Why Titanic Hydra?

I really like to play Tanks and if you do too then you maybe have noticed this item. It gives you damage, HP and HP-regeneration but what's really great is the passive and active that lets you deal a percentage of your max. HP as damage, gives you AOE-damage and an AA-reset. It's a great offensive choice on any Tank who builds a lot of HP and is Autoattack-reliant. Shen benefites from all aspects of this item very much.

This is what I do most of the time if I my team gets an early lead: I finish Cinderhulk and buy Tiamat but then i build one or even two Tank-Items befor finishing my Hydra. This makes you tanky enough for some early plays.

So an example build-path could be 1401.png > 3077.png > 3009.png > 3742.png > 3065.png > 3748.png > ...

3742.png Dead Man's Plate

My personal preference for a semi-offensive tankitem. The movementspeed is great for rotations and jungle clearing. The best alternative is Randuin's Omen against high-crit-opponents

3065.png Spirit Visage

Visage got changed over and over but is still the best MR item on Shen. Even if he has no heal in his kit, Shen is one of the champs with the highest base-HP-regeneration which benefits very much. The best alternative would be the new Adaptive Helmet against spellslinger like Ryze, Cassio, Teemo, Ezreal, ...

The Problem with CDR

To get CDR on Shen is a big problem, on one hand you want as much CDR as you can to get your Ultimate more often, but on the other hand there're very few Items with CDR that fit well with Shen. The three Items I would build on him because of the CDR would be 3065.png Spirit Visage, 3083.png Warmogs Armor and the 3158.png Ionian Boots of Lucidity, all with 10% CDR. To get the full 40% CDR the 3071.png Black Cleaver could be a viable item, but I build it very rarely on Shen. I sometimes thought about to build a 3110.png Frozen Heart, but I hate useless stats. Most of the time I just play with 20% or 30 % CDR, you just have to choose wisely when to ult a bit more.

VS

Amumu

Hard

Not only Amumu is a very strong pick in general and one of THE best junglers imo (check my Amumu guide to get used to the mummy), I consider him also a strong pick against Shen.
Shen is great against high single-target damage and Autoattack-reliant champions. As you might noticed, Amumu is neither. He can just ignore being tauntet, because he can get his damage off anyways. His CC can lock you down, preventing you from using your taunt or Spirit Refugee at the right moment. Shen is great at counterganking, but against Amumu he can't do much.

Shens earlygame is not the best and a good Shaco-player will know this. Since you can't do very much against his counterjungle, it's hard not to fall behind against him.

Why Jungle-Shen? (Pros and Cons) Back to Top

Befor his rework, Shen was known mostly as a very solid Toplaner with much utility and map-presence. The last two points have not been changed, so you might ask why I see him now to be better in the jungle, rather than on Toplane.
In the last months he got also nerfed over and over again, because of his strong presence in competitive scene.
On Toplane he is now in a bad spot in most matchups and you will mostly fall behind in farm with him.

Pros

+ gobal presence (that should be the main reason why you want to play Shen)

+ one of the best CC-abilities in the game (except ultimates)

+ save jungle-clear because of his passive and W

+ strong at any stage of the game but especially in the late midgame

+ strong ganks from early on, but even better counterganks with your ultimate

+ extremly good pick against meele assassins like Kah'Zix, Rengar, Xin Zhao, Vi, ... because you can deny most of   their damage

+ can help to snowball your team-carrys, or protect them from falling behind

+ your teammates will love you ;)

+ he's a damn Ninja, what do you want more?

Cons

- not a very fast clearer unless he gets Cinderhulk and Tiamat

- no sustain in his kit, beside his high base HP-regen.

- very team reliant, can't carry on his own

- very reliant on hitting his taunt

- vulnerable to strong counterjunglers and heavy-scaling Tank-junglers

- weak against AP-nuke-champs like Annie, that can burst easily trough your Ult-shield

- weak against longrange-mages that can keep him on distance (Lux, Anivia)

About me Back to Top

Hi Im theRastaDan,

im still a LoL-newbie and this is my third guide. My guides are mainly made for beginners like myself. Thats why I focus on champs I consider quit easy to play. NowShen is a Champion I would consider as medium-difficult. Most of the time I play Jungle or Toplane, sometimes Support. On all positions I prefer Tank- and/or Utility-based Champions.

With my third guide I'm facing my overall favourite Champion in League of Legends: Shen. I like everything on him, his kit, his playstyle, his lore and his design. I know that Jungle-Shen is a very unconventional pick, but I think he really does his job, if you like to play a very team-oriented Tank-Jungler. Give him a chance!

If you play in EUW, feel free to add me, maybe we can have some good games.

As you might noticed, English is not my native language, so please don't be mad if I've made a few mistakes. Write a comment and I will correct it.
