Summoner Spells Back to Top

Flash is always a must, with it you can do those flash taunt plays. Exhaust is recommended, i take it everytime since shen has only one CC, he really needs something else to protect his carry from assassins.

If you are up against an unbearable sustain lane, you can take ignite. It greatly increases your kill potential.

New Runes Back to Top

Resolve tree is literally made for Shen, this tree is full of great options for him. Guardian grants Shen another way to shield his ADC from harass and since it also grants him and his carry a speedboost, it's also decent at disengage.
So far, aftershock is actually meta keystone for shen support. It grants him noticeable boost to his tankyness when he lands his taunt and it also increases his damage output. Taunted opponents are almost quaranteed to get hit by aftershock's explosion damage.

Font of life is the most supportive rune choise in strength, it's basicly old Stoneborn pact keystone. Conditioning is generally the best option, it grants a strong buff to your armor and MR after 10 mins. Revitalize increases your passive shield and makes your ultimate and guardian shields stronger!

Celestial body grants you more health but decreases your damage dealt a bit during early game. Magical footwear grants Shen more movement speed which he needs to make flash taunts more often. Also, boot upgrades are cheaper with this rune.

Alternatively, you can take aftershock keystone. It's really good on Shen as well. It boosts your resistances when taunting foes and one second after your taunt expires, you will deal extra magic damage to them.

Masteries Back to Top

Shen Support uses generic tank masteries. Since he doesnt use mana, taking merciless makes him stronger at early fights.

New stoneborn pact is a fantastic mastery on Shen, it grants him more health and your taunts and Q slow marks opponents. Autos made against that target heals them, so basicly this mastery is old shen Q. Rest in peace, i miss that ability.

//Alternative masteries

You can take unyielding if your up against an all in lane, resolve is recommended since shen is vulnerable against harassing. Veterans scars is a decent choise too, i still use runic armor because it makes your passive shield stronger.
Finally, taking strenght of the ages is possible since your passive and taunt have health ratios, having some extra health is a good choise.

CoC is a great choise for Shen too, it grants a huge shield when you land your taunt on the enemy. This shield stacks really nicely with your passive shield.

Max E first to get shorter Cooldown as well as increasing its damage, max Q next to get better trading power. Maxing W is kind of pointless since all it does is shorten its CD.

Ability Explanations and Tips

shenpassive.png
Ki Strike

After using an ability, Shen shields himself from 52 - 120 (based on level) (+ 14% bonus health) damage for 2.5 seconds. If the triggering ability successfully affected at least one champion, Ki Barrier's cooldown is reduced by 4 - 7.5 (based on level) seconds.

Shen's power manifests as a Spirit Blade that he can control with his abilities.

231.png

Ki Barrier is your passive, whenever you use your spells you get a free shield which lasts for 2.5 seconds. Since it scales with 14% of your bonus health, this ability makes you really bulky on mid-late game when you get some health items. Whenever Shen's ability affects atleast one champion, this ability's cooldown decreases making it possible to do some clutch shields.

Tips

  • Use your Ki Barrier to block enemy skillshots which were directed at your Carry.
  • Whenever your Ki barrier is ready, its good idea to iniate on enemy botlaners, Ki barrier can block majority of their damage.
  • This ability is basicly a free CoC. If you wanna get beefier, pair it with courage of the colossus to tank lots of damage.

shenvorpalstar.png

Twilight Assault

Active: Shen recalls his Spirit Blade to his location and empowers his next 3 basic attacks within 8 seconds to deal bonus magic damage. Enemies the blade collides with are Slow icon slowed by 35% for the next 2 seconds when moving away from Shen.

If the Spirit Blade collides with an enemy champion, the empowerment is enhanced, dealing 2% (+ 0.5% per 100 AP) of target's maximum health bonus damage and gain 50% bonus attack speed.

231.png

Twilight Assault is your Q. It draws your spirit sword at you, enhancing your next 3 autos to deal magic damage based on enemy's max health. If this sword goes through an enemy champion, it slows them briefly and grants you more damage and auto attack speed boost. This ability deals a good bit of damage, which makes your trades relatively powerful.

Tips

  • This ability has a low Cooldown, use it to activate your passive.
  • If the enemy lane is pushing towards your tower, you can place your sword on a spot where the enemy carry and support are going to move when the next minion wave arrives. When your Q is able to make your sword go through them, they are slowed briefly making taunting easier and your auto attack damage is drastically improved.
  • Your Q is the only ability which can move your spirit sword outside your ultimate.
  • When you Q, your passive shield activates only when it collides with you. This makes it a bit hard to predict when your gonna get your shield. On laning phase, you should keep your sword close to you so you can activate passive as fast as possible.

shenfeint.png

Spirit's Refuge

Active: Shen primes his Spirit Blade for 2 seconds, causing it to project a protective zone around it for 1.75 seconds if he or an allied champion move nearby, causing allies in the zone to dodge attacks.

When no champions are standing on the zone, this zone goes to stasis for 1.75 seconds. The blockzone activates as soon as an ally champion steps in it's range or when the stasis expires.

231.png

This is your cockblockzone, when you or your carry are inside your sword and you activate this ability, it blocks enemy auto attacks for 1.75 seconds. You can block enemy adc and support's AA harass with it.

Tips

  • Inform your ADC to stay close to your sword at skirmishes, thus making it easier for you to utilise this ability properly.
  • This ability follows your Q.
  • If you are about to get engaged on, activate your W and then Q afterwards. This ability goes to stasis when nobody is standing inside it's range. It activates as soon as you get close to it's range.
  • This ability blocks auto attack resets and enhanced autos, including siphoningstrikenew.pngnamiE.pngmissfortunericochetshot.pngmordekaisermaceofspades.pnglulupassive.png.
  • Since this ability has a long cooldown, its recommended to use it to block enemy ADC autos with it since AP support autos are pretty weak.
  • Keep your spirit sword close to your carry at laning phase. When you leave to ward, order your ADC to stick close to your sword. It can still block autos if opponents try to engage on him/her and you happen to see it on the minimap.
  • This ability blocks Baron Nashor's attacks, but not Dragon's fire breath.

shenshadowdash.png

Shadow Dash

Shen dashes in a direction, taunting enemies in his path.

Passive: Dealing damage with Shadow Dash or Twilight Assault recovers (30/35/40 based on level) Energy.
Active: Shen dashes in a direction, dealing 50/75/100/125/150 [+12 of your bonus health] physical damage to enemy champions and neutral monsters in his path and taunting them for 1.5 seconds.

231.png

One of Shen's signature moves, this is your only hard crowd control ability but really efficient one. Passively, your Q autos and taunts grant you back some energy. This item has a nice health ratio attached.

Tips

  • Knowing how to do flash taunt is a big part about utilizing this ability to its full potential.
  • This ability has a bit odd hitbox, it takes a bit of practising to get used to it.
  • It also works on Monsters, you can grant a good early leash with it. (Taunting monsters is bugged right now, it doesn't always aggro them. Atleast it always aggroes scuttlecrabs)

United We Stand

shenstandunited.png

Active: Shen channels for 3 seconds, shielding the target allied champion for up to 5 seconds.

Upon completing the channel, Shen and his Spirit Blade blink to the target ally's location.

231.png

One of the most well known ultimates, you can ult at any teammate with it and grant them a huge shield as well. Use it to save teammates from dives or assist them if you think you can grant them a kill or two at small fights.

Tips

  • Latest patch increased this shield's power depending on how low health your ally has. This shield is at max capacity when your ally has 40% of their health left.
  • Has a 3 second channel time before you TP at your target, this shield is a bit weak on early which means that you need to know when you have to ult or else your ally might die.
  • Inform your ADC that your going to teleport away if you  see an ally in need of help.
  • Since you are support, you get ranks on this ability very slowly. You really need to know the right times to ult.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Always start with this. It grants health, reliable source of income as well as some sustain. Other starting items are bad on Shen.
Fillable potion if you won't be poked too often, health pots against harass lane.

Core Items

Your boot options. If your really good at doing flash taunts, take ionian boots to make more flash taunt plays. Otherwise, get swiftness boots or mobis. Mercs are good if enemy team has lots of CC, and ninjas if opponent team is auto attack reliant.
Choose the Rest of your items from situationals.
Rush this. Relatively cheap and grants really good stats. Synergizes well with your ultimate. When you tp to someone, use this item to them to reduce all damage they take. On teamfights, use it on the most fed carry.
Buy this item on your first back. You need to upgrade it to targons to be able to finish the sightstone quest. Upgrade targon's later on in the game.
I currently like to rush Knight's vow first, upgrade sightstone afterwards and then purchase Locket. Upgraded sightstone boosts locket shield by fair amount.

Situational Items

Really good last item pick. Grants more beef, more health and a helpful slow.
I usually pick this if the enemy team has 3 auto attack reliant champs, grants nice stats and your taunts force them to hit themselves. It now applies grievous wounds when opponents are attacking you, it's obviously made when dealing with ADC's since it reduces their lifesteal. Going thornmail against draintanks is a pretty bad idea since they deal magical damage.
Great tank item overall with really helpful speedboost attached.
If you really need that health to stay alive on fights. Great item against poke comps since this item's healthreg is huge.
Still a decent item. Just dont buy mobis with this since this item's damage aura removes your out of combat speed whenever it touches enemy minion or monster.
Now an AP item. It's generally a better option to take abyssal scepter now, but this item is still fine if you need some AP to increase your ultimate shield while getting more magic resist. If your team has a tank with abyssal while opponent team has 2 or more magic damage dealers or champs with hard CC, buy this.
This item is now a tank item. It grants magic resist, health and hp regen while also having old scepter's passive. It causes your opponents to take 10% more magic damage while you are close to them. I recommend to get it if you have magic damage reliant team and some magic damage on opponent team as well.
This item's mana is worthless on you, but that auto attack slow is really helpful. I build this really rarely but it can get the job done.
Here's a pretty crazy item, but definitely possible. If your team deals mostly magic damage, this item can be picked. Your Qs deal more and more damage due to this item's MR shred, on top of that this item is really cheap.
You ARE a support. Thankfully this item's 15% bigger shield scaling makes your ultimate, Ki strike and possible FoTM and locket shields stronger.
Less viable option now, they gutted it's healing alot. Grants 10% stronger ultimate and Ki strike shield. You can pair it with your ultimate really well, first use this item's active on teammate and then ult at them while this item's active channels.
Shen can splitpush and place this to lane before he teleports onto his teammate. If you are gonna do this splitpush tactic, pair this item with sunfire cape.
Synergizes really well with your ultimate. Shen's ult + Locket = huge shield. This item now scales with it's user's bonus health.
After some testing, new font of life (replacer of stoneborn) still procs Ardent censer! This item's AP Ratio + forbidden idol passive greatly increases your ultimate shield as well as potential Guardian- and locket shields.
This item is pretty common right now. You can engage on skirmishes and potentially teamfights with this.

General playstyle:

This build's tactic behind it is to make Shen as supportive semitank as possible. With this build you got plenty of shields and utility to protect your ADC from assassins while also turning the tides of skirmishes with your ultimate.

127.jpg

Early game:

Early game relies heavily on what kind of bot lane you are up against. Shen's level one engage potential is really high, his taunt deals a good bit of damage and his passive negates good bit of their early game damage. If up against a poke lane, taking Q instead is a decent choise. With it you can activate your shield passive and use it to eat opponent projectiles. It also makes it easier push the lane to get level two sooner. Shen's level two trading is even better than level one since at this point, he has his Q and E. With one well-aimed taunt he can activate enhanced Q and get all 3 strong auto attacks on caught opponent.

Mid game:

Mid game starts when you have your FOTM and sightstone ready and you are building towards Knight's vow next. Whenever you got your ultimate, try to keep one eye on the minimap constantly. If you don't have your ultimate, you should stick with your ADC most of the time. Shen's roaming potential is really good, if your ADC left the lane and opponent midlaner has pushed the lane, you can go and gank mid.

Late game:

When late game arrives, you should be sticking with your allies all the time. Shen support can't accomplish much himself. When you have your ultimate up and if you bought ZZrot and preferrably sunfire cape, you can go to split top lane or bot lane and ult to your allies if opponents attempt to engage.

179.png

To sum it up:

Shen is a pretty unique character. The first time i played reworked Shen, i called him a tankier version of Orianna since his kit heavily relies in controlling his spirit sword. Since Shen is basicly a fighter/offtank, you should try to fight on early-midgame if you can successfully land your taunt on them.

VS

Alistar

Easy

Kind of easy matchup, abuse his weak level 1 with your taunts. Avoid bad positioning when he has hispulverize.png and headbutt.png. If he still QW's you to a bad spot, you still got your taunt which passes through him. Be very careful pre-6 when pushing to his tower since he can 4.pngpulverize.pngheadbutt.pngyou onto his tower. Play around his Q cooldown.

  • Avoid getting caught when your taunt is on cooldown.
  • Alistar is really hard to kill when he gets his ultimate, try to avoid diving him when his ult is up.
  • Your taunt can go through him if he WQ's you to a bad spot.
  • You can use your W to block his E stun auto attack.

VS

Anivia

Medium

VS

Annie

Medium

She has extremely strong early all in at 6, she is really squishy though so you can force trades with her with your taunts. Once she hits 6 dont stay too close to your carry, or you might get stunned by her tibbers. She is good at setting up ganks, keep dragon den's gap and tribush warded.

VS

Ashe

Easy

You can't block her volley with your W, but you can still block his ranger's focus autos. She is very unmobile, you can force trades with your taunt. Try to force trades early, but watch out when she hits 6, she can pin any botlaner down when her jungler tries to gank.

She is also somewhat support dependant, if she has a high cc support with her you might just want to play passive.

  • Ashe's most of her damage potential is on her W and Q ability. Engage on her when her Wvolley.png is on cooldown and use your Spirit's refuge to block her enhanced auto attacks.
  • If you see her ultimate coming towards you and your carry and you are absolutely sure that your carry can't dodge it, eat her ultimate. Then, cast your W first and then Q. Your Q drags Spirit's refuge at you and it also activates your passive shield. When her stun expires, taunt away.
  • Ashe's crowd control abilities are really annoying, if her team has other CC-heavy champs, buy mercury treads.3111.png
  • If your carry is unmobile, you should be mindful when you ult onto other lanes. Ashe might be able to engage on your carry while you are away if she has her ultimate. She will most likely use her ultimate on you to stop you from ulting away though.

VS

Bard

Easy

Your shenw.png blocks his auto attack damage but not his meep magic damage. Still, his still deals bardQ.png a good bit of damage. He is squishy and unmobile. When he hits his ult, try not to push since he can setup ganks with his ultimate really well. Also if your pushing and he disappears, he might try to bardE.png behind you with his jungler.

  • Taunt him when his Q is on cooldown, it's literally his only damaging ability.
  • You can block his meep-empowered auto attacks.
  • A skilled Bard with ignite is great at securing first bloods. Avoid standing close to walls and your minions since he can use them to stun you. Avoid prolonged fights with ignite bard.
  • If you are about to get his by his ultimate, cast your Q on you. It will continue traveling towards you while you are on stasis. When it wears off, activate your W or taunt away.
  • Bard is great at setting up ganks with his tunnel, it's recommended to keep these spots warded.wardd.jpg

VS

Blitzcrank

Medium

You should be good to go as long as you can eat his hooks. You can just taunt away when he grabs you. Know that his power fist can knock you up if he starts the animation when you taunt away, so try to wait till you get knocked up.

  • You can use his hook as an engage tool, when he hooks you press W and Q as soon as you can. This drags your spirit blade at you and activates your W as soon as it enters your area, potentially blocking his knockup.
  • if he hooks you, you can just taunt away since you pass through opponents with it.
  • Be mindful when you teleport to other lanes, blitz can easily engage on your carry if your carry is not cautious when you are gone. If you position yourself poorly while you ult, you can also get hooked by him. Of course, this can be used as a cheesy engage as well.

VS

Brand

Hard

Extremely obnoxious matchup, he has both bursty and sustained magic damage on him. He however lacks cc, his only crowd control is on his Q and on his ulty. You can try to play around his Q cooldowns.

  • You should try to fight him when his Q is on cooldown, it's his only CC tool.
  • Avoid getting hit by 3 of his abilities, this activates his passive which deals % of your health in magic damage.
  • If the lane gets too opressive, get mobis and roam elsewhere. He is poor at roaming and he can't follow if you teleport elsewhere.

VS

Braum

Medium

Braum is annoying to play, no matter what your playing. Thankfully your shenfeint.png can block your carry from proccing his passive. I mostly recommend playing passive, taunting at him results in getting stunned by his passive. If you can taunt at his carry you and you got a good follow up carry, its still manageable.

  • If you engage on him or his carry, you are probably going to get stunned by his passive unless you have your W. This can put you to bad spot.
  • Your taunt goes through his shield.
  • You can use your W to block his passive autos.

VS

Caitlyn

Medium

One of the funniest matchups as a Shen, you can eat her cupcake traps and then activate your shenfeint.png to block her  caitlynyordletrap.pngcrits. She has a huge range, taunting her may not be too easy task though, and she can certainly harass well with her caitlynpiltoverpeacemaker.png. Support dependant matchup.

VS

Corki

Easy

Low range, corki players can disengage with W really well, Play around his carpetbomb.png cooldown.

  • Corki is a combination of mage and marksman. He relies on both auto attacking and abilities to deal damage, which is why Sheen is his core item.
  • Corki's E shreds both armor and magic resist, avoid prolonged fights with him. Especially if he has a high killpotential support.
  • He has a dash which costs lots of mana, use your taunt on him to force him to disengage constantly. This will eventually make him run all out of mana.

VS

Draven

Medium

He is really predictable, and you can block huge chunks of his burst with your W. His auto attack damage is however very high, if he has an all in support you might wanna save your Q and W to position your sword at your carry if he goes all in. Support dependant matchup.

  • It's pretty easy to taunt draven when he has his Q active.
  • Your W is great at negating his strong auto attacks.
  • Matchup gets tougher if he has a hook support thanks to his strong damage.
  • If he starts to get too painful to deal with, rush knight's vow3109.png first, start by buying chainmail1031.png first.

VS

Ezreal

Easy

You can block his ezrealmysticshot.png with your W. He can be tricky to deal with since he is so mobile with his arcane shift. Play around his E cooldown.

VS

Fiddlesticks

Easy

To be added when i get to play against one.

VS

Galio

Medium

To be added when i get to play against one.

VS

Graves

Easy

Very low range, you can force trades with him. He has some really high damage however, i recommend engaging on small fights with him only since he outdamages on longer fights.

VS

Janna

Hard

Extremely annoying to lane against. She forces you to play passive, she tends to try harass with her autos which is when you can try to taunt at her. You can get mobis and roam to mid instead since bot lane is not going to see much action.

  • Forces the lane to be played passively.
  • Buy mobis and fuck off to other lane when possible. Janna can't follow you when you use your ultimate.

VS

Jhin

Easy

You can block his 4th autos with your W. Go ham whenever he is reloading. He has some really good crowd control on him, potentially a support dependant matchup.

  • You can block his 4th auto attack, thus negating huge chunk of his damage output.
  • He is really vulnerable when he is reloading, fight if possible when he reloads.
  • He is decent at setting up fights with his CC-abilities, but since you are Shen, you can taunt away when his root expires. Avoid getting caught when your taunt is on cooldown.
  • If Jhin's team has other high-cc characters, buy mercs.3111.png
  • It's also a good idea to buy mikael's3222.png on similar ocassion if your carries are unmobile.

VS

Jinx

Easy

Very unmobile, generally an easy matchup for you.

VS

Kalista

Medium

Thankfully not seen on Adc role often anymore, her passive makes it really hard to land taunts.

  • This matchup takes a bit of prediction and good reflexes. You need to know when to taunt or else she is going to use her passive and jump away.
  • You can stop her from putting spears to your allies with your W, but you can't stop her Rendkalistaexpungewrapper.png.
  • Kalista's ultimate is excellent in engaging, if you have an unmobile carry, be mindful when you ult elsewhere. Kalista and her support can easily 2v1 your ADC.

VS

Karma

Hard

Really annoying laner to play against, her mantra E shields are gigantic and she has huge poke. Use your passive to block her Q harass, shield your carry from her harass.

  • This matchup basicly forces you to use yourself as a meatshield for your carry. You need to block her Q poke with your passive.
  • Best moment to engage on her is when her mantra is on cooldown.

VS

Kayle

Easy

Your shenfeint.png blocks her rightious fury autos. Watch out for prolonged fights with her, since her spells and autos shred your armor.

VS

Kennen

Medium

Your W blocks his kennenbringthelight.png's passive magic damage autos. He has relatively low range, you can try to force trades with him. Try to force trades before he hits his ulty, he has a really strong all in once he hits that.

VS

Kog'Maw

Easy

Extremely unmobile, engage on him whenever his kogmawbioarcanebarrage.png is on cooldown.

  • Kog'maw mostly auto attacks, you can shut him down for 1.75 seconds when your W is active.

VS

Leona

Medium

Generally a pain in the arse to deal with. Depending on her carry, you can try to counter iniate if she lands her E at your carry. Save your Q and W to place your sword at your carry in case if fight gets longer than expected.

  • You can block her Qleonashieldofdaybreak.png with your Wshenw.png.
  • Adc-dependant matchup.

VS

Lucian

Medium

Pretty generic carry. Only thing you need to look out for his his dash.

VS

Lulu

Hard

She tends to have a good poke, on fights you can thankfully block her passive magic damage with your shenfeint.png. She is very squishy, you can try to taunt her if she tries to harass.

  • Your W blocks her enhanced auto attacks.
  • Her Wluluw.png makes you unable to cast spells, i hate this spell so much.
  • It's generally recommended to engage when her Polymorph is on cooldown.
  • She has an upper hand on post-6 fights since her ultimate is more reliable than yours. You can't auto attack when you are casting your ult.

VS

Lux

Easy

She has really bursty harass on her, watch out for prolonged fights with her. Iniate on her when her root is on cooldown. Support Lux players are generally forced to play supp role, thus they rarely buy a sightstone. Inform your jungler that he can take dragons with ease if she doesnt build one.

  • Your W blocks her from activating her passive, unless she uses her ultimate to activate it.
  • Engage when her Q is on cooldown, it's her only hard CC ability.

VS

Malphite

Easy

VS

Maokai

Medium

To be added.

VS

Miss Fortune

Medium

You can block her missfortunericochetshot.png harass. She is very squishy but she does have some really good damage on her. Support dependant matchup.

  • You can use your W to block her Q harass.
  • She is unmobile, but her W passive makes it a bit tricky to land your taunt on her.
  • Her poke and damage output is really annoying.
  • Avoid overstaying on lane, she can use her ultimate to kill you if you are not being cautious.

VS

Mordekaiser

Medium

Since he is melee you can force trades with him, and yes you can block his Q autos but not the rest of his abilities. Force trades with him early, make it harder for him to come back onto the game.

VS

Morgana

Hard

One of the worst counters for you, she has the means to force you to sit down. Her black shield blocks your Q auto damage and taunts, and her roots force you to time out. Play passive, if your feeling brave play around her E cooldown. Get early mobis and roam to mid if your midlaner has good CC or if enemy midlaner is unmobile.

  • Pretty much the best champion against shen, only because of her black shield.
  • Pre-6 engage on her if possible whenever her Q is on cooldown and hope that she doesn't have good E reflexes.
  • Avoid fighting after she has her ultimate, she can turn the fight really easily with it if you fail to taunt.

VS

Nami

Medium

She has poke, good CC and sustain. Generally her bubble has a lengthy cooldown, taunt her whenever its on cooldown and she tries to harass. Try to force early trades, she gets more challenging when she gets her tsunami.

  • Your W blocks her enhanced E-autos.
  • Her Qnamiq.png is her only hard CC pre-6, engage on her when this ability is on cooldown.
  • When she gets her ult, making a failed engage attempt with taunt can turn badly really fast.
  • Taking ignite14.png is a great choise since she can just heal all the damage you can deal with your engages.

VS

Nautilus

Hard

VS

Nidalee

Easy

Just dodge her spears. Nidalee supports are most often seen on very low elo and are forced to play support, thus they usually just go full damage and neglect getting sightstone, ask your jungler for a gank. She has no CC so you can iniate on both her and her carry.

VS

Nunu

Easy

VS

Orianna

Medium

There are two types of Oriannas. Most often are the ones who are forced to play support, they try to harass often and find themselves running oom fast.

Then there's Utility oriannas. Really rare type, they max their E and W first to provide strong shields, armor mr bonuses and speedboosts to their team. Orianna's ball makes their carry tanky, giving you harder time going ham at them. Since she tends to stay behind her carry going ham at her is not going to happen often.

She is especially dangerous if her team has stealth champions or yasuo, since she can just give her ball to rango and then send him moving really fast and then ult when he is at the middle of enemy team. Also, yasuo can use his ult with ori ulty.

VS

Poppy

Easy

VS

Quinn

Medium

VS

Rakan

Hard

Rakan is basicly an assassin with support's kit. His mobility is incredible and he offers really good utility to his kit.

  • Thanks to Rakan's mobility, it's really hard to taunt him.
  • He can negate most of your engage damage with his shield, which can be casted twice.
  • His W and ultimate combo is a force to be reckoned with. It's really hard to predict when he uses this combination.
  • He is one of the best supp Shen counters alongside Morgana.

VS

Shaco

Medium

VS

Shen

Hard

VS

Sion

Medium

Sion supports. AOE stuns, good poke, armor shred and ultimate with huge range. I recommend playing passive. If you are hit my his E, he can follow up with his Q, just taunt him when he starts the Q animation if its about to hit your carry or taunt away if he uses it on you. You can try to force trades when his Q is on cooldown. After he hits 6 dont stay too close to your adc since his ult can stun both of you. When he ults dont try to taunt him during his ultimate animation, wait for him to crash to his target and then use your E when he starts Q channel.

  • Your W blocks his passive undead auto attacks.
  • Engage on him when his Q is on cooldown.
  • If you see him ulting towards you, eat his ultimate. Then, cast your W first and then Q. Your Q drags Spirit's refuge at you and it also activates your passive shield. When his stun expires, taunt away.

VS

Sivir

Easy

Her spellshield makes her a decent counter for Shen. Thankfully she has a low range and her spellshield has long CD, play whenever its on cooldown.

  • She has an extremely short auto attack range (500) which makes it easy for you to engage on her.
  • Play around her spellshield cooldown. When she can't use it, she can't do anything if you force a trade with her.

VS

Sona

Medium

Thankfully, you can block her passive autos. Her harassing power is really strong, but she is very squishy. Try to taunt her when she attempts to poke you.

  • Sona is a really squishy champion and she lacks CC on early game. Engage on her when you got your passive shield up.
  • Avoid ulting on too obvious places, she can interrupt your ultimate teleport with her ult.
  • Her poke can be really annoying. Her passive empowered auto attacks can be blocked with your W. When possible you can also eat her harass with your passive shield, it's better if you take her poke instead of your ADC.

VS

Soraka

Hard

She negates all your damage. I recommend playing passive and letting her to push your lane. When the lane is pushed ask your jungler to gank and proceed to flash taunt her if you are skilled enough. Ignite is recommended.

  • Same Janna method is recommended, show your presence in other lanes. She can't follow you when you ult. She can however use her silence to stop you if you poorly position yourself while channeling.
  • If you can convince your jungler to camp your lane, you can engage on her with flash taunt if you are skilled enough.

VS

Tahm Kench

Hard

He has some good dueling potential due to his health damage passive, i recommend not to fight him. Passive lane, wait for your jungler to gank since he can just eat his carry if you taunt opponent adc.

  • Your W stops him from proccing his passive. When he is taunted, he automatically gets to proc his passive on you so you really need your W before you engage on him.
  • If lane doesn't get anywhere, get mobis and roam elsewhere. He is poor at starting fights so your ADC should be fine unless he is paired with either Varus or Ashe.
  • Don't let him eat you. His Devour deals max % health damage which really hurts tanks.

VS

Taric

Easy

You can dodge his stuns well, and you can block his bravado passive. Play around his E cooldown.

  • Taric is decent at negating your damage with his heal, his bastion shield and his bastion's bonus armor which is given to linked allies.
  • Taric has a really good AOE-stun but it takes a while to channel which makes it easy for you to dodge it. Also when this ability is on cooldown, engage on him.

VS

Thresh

Medium

Medium-hard matchup depending on the skill of enemy Thresh.

  • Shen is a decent counter for Thresh. You can use your taunt to flee when he hooks you.
  • A skilled Thresh can use his flay to stop you from taunting. He can also save his flay to negate your dash if he is good enough.
  • Thresh is great at securing first bloods, you should be really careful when you see ignite Thresh players.
  • Getting caught when your taunt is on cooldown is not an option.
  • He is obviously pretty vulnerable when his hook is on cooldown.
  • His lantern is great at saving his carries from your engages, if possible it's better to focus him unless his lantern is on cooldown.

VS

Tristana

Easy

  • You can use your spirit's refuge to block her from stacking up detonatingshot.png.
  • Her rocket jump grants her a powerful escape tool. it has a pretty long cooldown though.
  • Engaging on her can be tricky, your taunt has a long cooldown on early game so if you taunt, she can just rocket jump away and she has RJ ready again when your taunt is up again.
  • You should focus on forcing short trades with her.

VS

Trundle

Easy

He cant catch you off guard with his ice pillar since you can just taunt through it. You can block his Q as well. Abuse his weak early game, he gets a powerspike once he hits his ultimate.

VS

Twitch

Easy

Low ranged and unmobile and weak early game. Dont stay alone on lane for too long since he can sneak behind you with his Q.

  • Most of his early damage relies on him stacking his passive on you, this can be stopped with your W.
  • He is unmobile, you can engage on him pretty much whenever you want.

VS

Urgot

Easy

Reworked. He is now a toplaner, so you probably won't be seeing him on ADC.

VS

Varus

Hard

Very obnoxious poke, but thankfully he is really unmobile. Your only chance to abuse him is by iniating on him before he hits his ulty, since he can pin you down for a very long period of time with his ultimate. This is a support dependant matchup.

  • Varus is much more challenging version of Corki, as in a mage Marksman hybrid.
  • He relies alot in his W-stacking mechanic. Block as many autos as you can with your W.
  • His poke can't be stopped at all, you can use your passive to tank his poke but it will go through you, potentially harming your ADC. It's generally just the best idea to avoid getting hit by his abilities.

VS

Vayne

Easy

Low range, force trades early. She has some good damage when she gets her ult, i recommend saving your Q and W to position your sword at your carry at skirmishes.

  • Engage on her when her tumble is on cooldown.
  • If you position your Q so that both you and your ADC gets shielded by your W during post-6 2v2 fights, you can make her auto attacks worthless for a good 1.75 seconds. Unless she realizes to condemn your adc out of that zone.

VS

Veigar

Medium

He is very squishy, but his stun makes him somewhat challenging to deal with. Thankfully his stun has a lengthy cooldown, play around that. If you get caged at his stun, dont bother trying to taunt through the event horizon walls.

VS

Vel'Koz

Hard

He has really hidious poke damage and his abilities have very long range, just block his poke with your passive. He only has one hard CC with decently long CD, try to force trades on his carry when its on CD. Once he hits 6 try not to get 3 stacks of his passive since it makes his ultimate to deal true damage on you.

VS

Zilean

Hard

He can be dealt with on early levels but once he starts getting points on his E it starts to get really hard. Basicly if you taunt at him and fail, your forced to eat a 55-85% slow and maybe even a stun. Pray that he maxes his Q first, it makes his harass more unbearable but you can make him push the lane for you by standing close to low minions when his bomb is on you. Dont bother fighting him after 6, instead i recommend doing plays on other lanes.

VS

Zyra

Hard

Everyone just hates to play against Zyra. Her poke is insane and she peels super well. Try to catch her off guard. Her plants passively push the lane, beg your midlaner or jungler to gank.

  • Pre-6 her E is her only peeling tool. Go ham when it's on cooldown.
  • She is really unmobile and squishy.
  • You can't block her plant attacks.
  • Her ultimate deals lots of damage, avoid fighting when her ultimate is up.

No longer has only one CC ability, his twilight strike has a slow on it
Can dash through walls
Uses energy, both upside and downside. On the upside you wont be running out of it, but if you just mash your buttons on fights your gonna run out of it and be useless.

cassiopeiamiasma.pngConscassiopeiamiasma.png
If he falls behind, he is not going to get much tank items and thus stays kind of squishy
Vulnerable against poke
Lacks reliable CC if he fails his taunt
His spirit's refuge and taunt have kind of high cooldowns early
His ult tends to be weak on rank one, he needs experience to get it stronger.
He is more of a semitank, he can't iniate teamfights, thus requiring a good iniator
Somewhat hard to play because you need to learn to manage your spirit sword

ADC synergy list Back to Top

Listing the ADC synergies on Shen is kind of tough since Shen support's thing is to teleport to other lanes often to assist his other teammates.

Safe laners (preferred)
81.png51.png15.png18.png236.png115.png
Lane type: Poke lane, short trades, freedom to teleport away whenever you want.
These guys are recommended ADC's for shen support. They are able to solofarm when you teleport away, and they are able to remain relatively safe thanks to their natural dashes and blinks.

Lane bullies
202.png110.png222.png119.png21.png429.png
Lane type: Constant and strong trades, good CC-chain, teleporting away is a bit risky.
These guys are basicly B-tier of ADC's for Shen to pair with, you scale decently with them and you can pressure bot lane with your iniations. On top of that these ADC's tend to have some form of CC, so you can CC-chain with some of them to quarantee kills. Since these laners are unmobile, it is recommended to make them aware when you are gonna leave the lane with your ultimate.

Hyperscaling ADC's (Risky without proper communication)
29.png96.png67.png
Lane type: Farm lane, passive depending on opponents' bot lane type, very vulnerable against poke, teleporting can be lethal when lane is not pushed to your tower, high risk high reward.
Hyperscalers are not preferred ADC-options for Shen. Shen is pretty vulnerable against poke, having Kog'maw multiplies your poke vulnerability even more. If you do manage to make it to late game in one piece, these partners outclass other ADC's.

Special Cheese tactic
4.png29.png133.png
If you time your ultimate right, you can use the mobility of these guys to surprise teleport opponents and clean them up. It's hilariously cheesy but if you do manage it right, it's a pretty memorable moment.

Art of roaming Back to Top

Roaming means leaving the lane to make plays elsewhere. It can be a risky tactic but when executed right, you can win jungler or mid lane skirmishes. Before you roam, you should think about how your ADC is going to do without you peeling for him/her, and are the opponent laners able to engage on him/her when you are not around.

Shen's roams are really powerful. He can really turn the tide of skirmishes with his long taunt, high damage output and his auto attack blockzone.

Things to consider before roaming
  • Is your ADC going to be fine for a while without him/her dying or losing to much CS to opponent bot lane?
  • Are you absolutely certain to be able to get your teammates some kills when roaming?
  • How much experience are you going to lose if roaming when opponent bot laners are still on the lane?

When to roam
  • Generally the best ocassion to roam is when opponent bot laners have recalled or if they died recently, or even if your own carry died and you still got health to try to make plays elsewhere.
  • If the lane has frozen underneath their tower.
  • If your carry has a long range or dash, for example Caitlyn or Tristana.
  • If your midlaner or jungler are fighting nearby and you can get there sooner than the opponent bot lane.
  •  Opponent midlaner has pushed the wave to your midlane tower.
  • You got vision on the opponent jungler who is taking a nearby jungle camp, you can go there with your jungler to kill them.
  • If your bot lane got stomped, you can try to roam to make plays elsewhere to ensure that your other teammates can carry you.
Risks of Roaming
  • If your roams won't succeed or if you roam way too much, you can fall behind in experience.
  • There's always the risk of something bad happening which might result in you dying, this makes you fall really behind in experience.
  • Your ADC might die against bot laners if you aren't cautious.

Advanced Shen Tips Back to Top

Flash Taunt

A classic and flashy Shen tip, taking the hang of this trick is a bit difficult but once you got it, you can make some clutch saves with it on fights. Basicly, during your taunt animation you flash at your opponent, you need to direct your flash so that you flash inside your target, if they are clutched together you can potentially taunt multiple enemy champions with it.

Q slow Trap

If the enemy lane is pushing towards your tower, you can place your sword on a spot where the enemy carry and support are going to move when the next minion wave arrives. When your Q is able to make your sword go through them, they are slowed briefly making taunting easier and your auto attack damage is drastically improved.

Chase taunt

If you are getting chased by a melee champion, you can move back at them and then taunt towards the exit. If you do this right, opponent is going to follow you like they did before but they are unable to use their abilities.

Bodyguard taunt

This taunt works against melee champions. If your carry is getting dived and you happen to be right next to that carry, you dash away from your carry but make sure that opponent diver gets taunted. He will then follow you, and your carry can potentially run away to safety.

Hello, i am Dumbledore Bot, Plat D5 on flex pick on EUNE server. I started playing league on early S4, and after i started to understand this game i realized that support is just my kind of role. I used to play old Shen as a support quite often especially when teambuilder was around. Been practising this new Shen as well, he is most certainly a viable support but a bit challenging to play.

Shen support is starting to rise in popularity. Donghuap made a really detailed small guide about this pick.
