Summoner Spells Back to Top

There is not really any alternative.

12.png Teleport is extremely important as it allows for far more map control. For example it can be used to quickly port back into lane after Ulting bot, so that the enemy toplaner does not instantly destroy your tower.

4.png Must have as flash-taunt is just too much utility to ignore. Obviously a good pick for other reasons as well, e.g. escapes. Only downside the rather long cooldown.

6.png Could be an alternative, but to be honest it happens quite rarely that enemies escape because I couldn't chase them down. Has a nice cooldown tho, just not as much utility as flash for bot ganks, as you normally dont have that much time to set them up, and taking too long is dangerous (for example chasing), as the top tower may fall, or midlaners/jungles may move as well.

3.png14.png I don't consider these to be alternatives to teleport, as Shen is all about controlling the map. That is obviously far easier if you can win your lane, but most match ups are not that one sided.

Masteries Back to Top

This is pretty much the mastery page I go with 99% of the time.

The Mastery page is made for sustaining in lane. Which is one of the biggest concerns for shen, to not be pushed out of lane and thus to lose control.

Alternatives:

Exchange Insight with Perseverance.
With Dorans Shield this boosts our hp reg from 4 to 5 per second. Actually quite decent. I take it more often than not actually. I might change up the preference in the future.
Note: Shen is recieving hp-reg nerfs on the PBE, so this might get worse.

Exchange Swiftness with Legendary Guardian
Obviously no point in taking tenacity when the enemy has no CC of any sort.

This is generally the speccing order.

Alternatives:

q -> w -> e -> q (still max e second)

This can be done against ultra aggressive laners that try to zone early on, or/and try to chunk you big time.

q -> e -> q -> w (still max e second)

This can be done if the enemy pushes hard under the turret early on and you're not really interested in taking a trade early on.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Against heavy ap toplaner. For example, Lissandra, Rumble, etc. So you may get a fast Spirit Visage.
Standard start against most toplaners that might harass you, e.g. Irelia, Trundle, etc.
Might be useful against a harassing GP, so you can delay your first back as long as possible.

Core Items

This is pretty much the core, note that you obviously don't buy both boots but rather choose depending on which champs the enemy plays.
Pretty much the first item against most ad toplaners. Not just because it helps with waveclear, dps to champs, but because it keeps you in fight and thus keeps Grasp of the Undying up.
First item against most ap toplaners. Rumble, Lissandra and comparable ones. It gives quite a lot of lifereg, which helps extremely to sustain in lane.
Against teams that use heavy autoattackers, this item in combination with other armor items can be quite helpful against most adcs.
Against heavy cc, note that knock up durations won't get reduced by tenacity.
Absolute endgame build could look like this. Offers alot of tankiness, and even a bit of damage.

Situational Items

Adds a nice bunch of stats, even after over a 100 games im not entirely sure when to play this. I mostly go for it when games seem to be balanced, or when the game aint going so great. So that i may add more map pressure and keep lanes controlled. ---------------------------------- Note: That its very hard to place this offensively against strong solo laners that can destroy you in a straight up 1on1.
Very rarely go for it. You may add it as last item or when you feel like you really want to shove that lane fast and are confident about winning the 1on1.
Must have if you want to zone out ADCs, even helpful against true damage carries such as vayne.
Perfect for heavy autohitter combinations (adcs *cough cough*). If your armor build is complete you're easily able to battle most adcs, except maybe vayne and kogmaw.
Could be added against full ad teams, as you dont really need Spirit Visage at that point.
You could play this if you badly want to buy some more time for your backline and carries.
Can't say i play it all. Might be useful as last slot however.
Can be bought if nobody in your team can or wants to buy it, and the enemy team is heavy ap.
Can be added against almost full ap teams if you badly want some more MR.
I don't have too much experience with it, but it's considered to be one, if not the best dueling tool for Shen. Some Shens, swear that this is a hundred times better than Titanic. Try it out yourself against AP teams.

VS

Darius

Hard

Try to bait his q into minions if he tries to freeze. Don't waste your shenshadowdash.pnge before he used his dariusaxegrabcone.pnge or you're probably dead. Quite the annoying lane, play it safe, you will not win the 1on1. At least in 90% of the cases.

VS

Fiora

Medium

Careful of her level 2, she can deal loads of damage. If you don't underestimate her early and don't let her snowball you can hold the lane. However, dueling her is kinda out of the question, as her true damage ruins you.

Careful to feel false security, she can stun you if she fiorariposte.png w's your shenshadowdash.pnge and chunk you hard in the meantime. Even if she's low.

PS: As the game drags on you cant stop her push in a 1n1 as her true damage will rip through you and itemization is not really possible against her in later situations without decent lead.

VS

Fizz

Medium

If he goes full ap hes rather easy to manage with a Spirit Visage. A trinity force/ bruiser with teleport/ignite can be a bit more nasty. Generally you want to block his fizzseastonepassive.pngw damage with your shenfeint.pngw as far as I know even his fizzpiercingstrike.pngq damage is getting partially blocked by this. That way you'll chunk him with your 3 autos and rinse and repeat. You should be able to trade properly after 1-2 backs. But don't underestimate the fishmonger.

VS

Gangplank

Hard

This lane is extremely annoying if you don't have godlike reactions. But even then he will harass you till you drop. You can diminish some of his damage by blocking his parley.pngq with your shenfeint.pngw and smart shield usage. However, he won't go oom if he plays it smart and can really get on your nerves. In the end it comes down to farming under the turret and to hope for your jungle. You might be able to punish him early on, but generally he will kill you / force you to back often if played well.

Note: After playing this match up more often than I liked, I came to the conclusion that there is a small window at the beginning of the match up where you can actually trade and kill him. That is before his first buy, e.g. sheen. Just wait for him to waste q, barrel maybe and then chunk him with an e and 2-3 autos. If lucky and the GP underestimates you, you may get a kill of it [if you repeat that 2-3 times].

VS

Gnar

Medium

Can be extremely annoying if not kept in check by the jungler. Comes down to farming under the turret, try to keep the harass to a minimum. Engaging on him is not really an option, as he will use his gnarE.pnge to jump away and will chunk you hard with his gnarQ.pngq and gnarW.pngprocs as punishment.

VS

Illaoi

Hard

Don't even try to fight her. This match up can be extremely hard if unknown. Pretty much comes down to farming under the turret, maybe baiting out her q into the creeps if she tries to freeze and to dodge her q.

In the beginning her illaoiQ.pngq's are the dangerous part, however, after quite some time the illaoiE.pnge's will become the real killer. You will need to get out of the range as quick as possible, even if you lose cs in the process. This lane is not really winnable, only if you have a jungle that sits you hard and is not a squishy melee as well. (otherwise prepare to get her a double)

VS

Irelia

Medium

A farm lane, she can't really all in you, she, however, can actually kill you, if you missplay, while she is quite safe from you. Pretty much comes down to farming.

VS

Jax

Medium

Generally I would say that shen has the upper hand. At least early on. However, if Jax gets too far ahead, he will literally shit on you. Diving is no expection. Don't even dream of killing him when he has his trinity and is more snowballed than you.

VS

Kennen

Medium

Same story. Comparable to gnar. Can all in you if you underestimate him. Don't get harrassed to much while farming cs. You will probably not be able to kill him without help.

VS

Lissandra

Easy

Farm farm farm. Will probably push into your tower all day. Can't really kill you though. You can't kill her either, as you lack the damage for it, she will most likely always escape with her lissandraE.pnge.

VS

Malphite

Easy

Comparable to Maokai but a bit less annoying and less kill potential on you. Can obviously cancel your ult with his ufslash.png. Pretty much farm, itemize against him but don't expect to snowball off him.

VS

Maokai

Medium

Actually same lane as malphite. And most others. A farm lane, you can trade him, but he will probably punish you hard for it. Just far more annoying early on, when you dont have your core yet. Be aware of jungle dives.

VS

Nautilus

Easy

Has surprisingly high burst early on, but after Spirit Visage, the Match Up should be in your favor.

VS

Olaf

Medium

He falls off quite hard after a bit. However, the beginning harass can be ultra annoying and zone you out for a bit of cs. Be careful not to drop too low and watch out for his axes. Let him push into your tower, so he can't chase you for too long.

VS

Pantheon

Hard

Extremely high kill potential on you. Alas not many people play Pantheon, but should you have the displeasure of meeting a OTP Pantheon that goes full ad you're in for a big time. However, can be kept in check by a decent jungle.

VS

Renekton

Medium

You won't really beat him in lane unless he missplays, but he won't really kill you unless you fight him. Overall he has an advantage early on, but will fall off, while you scale decently.

Note that you can block his renektonpreexecute.pngw with your shenfeint.pngw. That negates quite a chunk of his burst.

VS

Riven

Medium

Rivens tend to push into your tower as they can't really stop doing aoe damage. Can go either way. If you play it safe and smart she won't really be able to hurt you as long as you're near your tower. Sometimes you can even get a kill on her, if she gets cocky and you shenshadowdash.pnge her under the tower. However, fights can go either way.

VS

Rumble

Medium

Will chunk and harrass you overtime if you are forced to farm under the tower, which will happen 99,9% as he will always push with his rumbleflamethrower.pngq. You can trade him after your 3065.png though, if he didn't get too far ahead.

VS

Singed

Easy

Doesn't really have any kill potential on you as long you itemize against him, he's more like an annoying fly that will push creeps into your tower constantly and may even proxy against you. Can't really punish you hard for shenstandunited.pngr away, as he pushes towers quite slowly.

VS

Swain

Hard

Same stuff as Vladimir really. Save your shenshadowdash.pnge for his swainshadowgrasp.pngw so he may not chunk you too much.

VS

Teemo

Medium

Can harass you, but not really deny you if he goes ap, as he will get minion aggro quite alot which will chunk him hard. As teemos range is quite low you can shenshadowdash.pnge him under the tower and get a couple of hits off, can often lead to a kill as teemos tend to play a suicidal playstyle. Spirit Visage negates alot of his damage.

Note: I havent played against an ad top teemo so far, so that match up might change for the better/worse.

VS

Trundle

Medium

You can't really kill him if he itemized well, but he can kill you. Especially dangerous in fights if he trundleR.pngults you and pretty much makes you far more squishy.

Note that his pillar can cancel your ult & tp.

VS

Vladimir

Hard

Well. This match up can be horror or rather normal, depending on the playstyle of the vladimir. He is one of the worst harrassers, and has the option to actually dive and kill you if you get harassed below a certain threshold. Depending on your jungle you might be able to snowball a bit off him, as he will most likely push the lane. But you will not ever really win the 1on1 against him.

VS

Xin Zhao

Easy

A piece of cake with a decent jungle. Its quite easy to itemize against xin, as sunfire and tabis should be enough to keep him in check and may even be enough to kill him in the process.

Note: His knock-up goes through your shenfeint.pngw. But deals no damage. Keep that in mind. If you time your w correctly, however, he loses most of his damage.

VS

Yasuo

Medium

Can go either way. He will outtrade you early on, but you might be able to punish the mistakes if you keep your eyes open for them. Will most likely push the lane, as he will keep dashing through minions. You can punish him with an shenshadowdash.pnge if he dashes into your minions. That way you will not be the only one getting chuncked down. Is most probably dead with jungle help.

Summary Back to Top

Shen is not meant to shit on his enemy toplaner. He is meant to snowball his Mid or Botlane. Preferably with help of his jungle. Most of the times its better to act than to react with his ults, so that you may have the overall advantage. However, this takes a bit of gamereading and might not be entirely possible in every Elo, as lower Elo might be unsure how to play around Shen.

Im not going to indepth about rotations here, as that would probably go beyond the scope of this guide. However, if you play Shen your macro play should be top notch, as you need to know when to be where. Mechanically he's not as punishing as a Yasuo for example, while still being able to make very insteresting plays.

I recommend reading a bit about the theory of split pushing and nashor/dragon control if you want to understand Shen and his depth, as he has the ability to control the flow of the game. If this sounds good to you, this champ is probably made for you, however, if you want to destroy your enemies with your feed, and be walking death machine, he is probably not meant for you, I'd rather go with Jax or other comparable champs at that point.

I hope this rather raw-boned guide helped at least a bit. I might go into a bit more depth, if people should be interested.

Cheers
