Summoner Spells Back to Top

Summoner Spells

Untitled-1.png

4.png Flash is the first Summoner Spell and I recommend always taking it when you're playing this champion. This is because Flash is the best Summoner Spell around. It is a really good and reliable Summoner Spell. It can be used offensively, defensively and is honestly, a really good Spell to take.

12.png Teleport is the second Summoner Spell that you should take on him. This Spell is really good because it can be used to get back to lane quicker and it can also be used to help your team. In the early game, you want to teleport back to lane after your first back. Then you should look for Teleport opportunities where you can help your team.

New Runes Back to Top

The recommended Rune page for Shen is Resolve and Sorcery. Grasp%20of%20the%20Undying.png?width=32 In the Resolve tree we will take Grasp of the Undying. This is because you’re AD and can constantly auto attack enemies. This is a good Rune on him. I also recommend taking Demolish.png?width=32 Demolish as you will not be able to kill the toplaner. This Rune will help you at getting towers too. The next Rune is Iron%20Skin.png?width=32 Iron Skin which will grant armor and will protect us from enemy auto attacks and damage. Second%20Wind.png?width=32 Second wind is good aswell because health regen is always nice.

In the second tree we will take Sorcery and The%20Ultimate%20Hat.png?width=32  the Ultimate Hat and Transcendence.png?width=32 Transcendence. This is really good on Shen because it will allow your ultimate to be up more often and allow you to protect your team easier.

Shen’s Passive is Ki Barrier
After Shen uses an ability, he shields himself for a few seconds. If the ability successfully affected one enemy champion, the cooldown is reduced. Shen’s Power manifests as a Spirit blade that he can control with his abilities (W and Q)

Screenshot_5.png

Shen’s Q is Twilight Assault
Active: Shen recalls his Spirit Blade to his location, slowing any enemies hit with it. Once it arrives Shen empowers his next 3 basic attacks. If his Q collides with an enemy, the empowerment is enhanced dealing added damage and gaining an increased bonus speed.

Tips: Your Q is rather strange, you can use it to last hit with and farm under towers. To gain the increased damage and attack speed, you want to Taunt the enemy, then press Q and auto the enemy. This will give you the bonus damage and speed. Your Q will grant a shield if your passive is up.

Screenshot_7.png

Shen’s W is Spirit’s Refuge

Shen primes his Spirit Blade for 2 seconds, causing it to project a protect zone around him for 1.75 seconds. Any auto attacks in the zone are neglected (auto attacks and minion autos).

Tips: Shen’s W is rather confusing, so I will try to clear it up. You know the blade thing? Where ever that is, that’s where the zone will be. You can move it by using your Q and if it’s still active, the zone will move. Beware, Shen’s W only stops auto’s if you’re in it and it will not move along when you kite. An example combo for Shen would be E Q W.

Screenshot_9.png

Shen’s E is Shadow Dash

Passive: Damage from Shadow Dash and Twilight assault recovers some energy.

Active: Shen dashes in a direction taunting all enemy champions or monsters hit.

Tips: Your E will be your main engage and peel tool. In the early game you can use this to trade with enemies in lane. A good example combo for Shen is E Q W. Make sure to hit your taunt as the enemy will deal a lot of damage to you if you miss and you will also look foolish- sorry mom. In team fights, use your taunt is rather versatile.

Screenshot_10.png

Shen’s Ultimate is Stand United

Shen channels for 3 seconds giving a shield to an allied champion. Upon completion the channel will teleport to the ally.

Tips: When using your ultimate make sure to stand out of any enemy crowd control because it will cancel the ultimate. You should also not stand in vision or be able to receive damage from enemies while channeling. You do not want to teleport on low health. There are a few different ways to use your ultimate: You can use it to save allies on low health or you can use it to change a 2v3 into a 3v3. Remember, when you use your ultimate, you need to get back to your lane quick as the enemy will deal damage to your tower.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

    Recommended Start
Think you can kill the enemy early?
If you're in a horrible sustain matchup.

Core Items

Your first major item is going to be Titanic Hydra.
Your second core item will be boots.
After you have your boots you want to get a sun fire cape.
Your fourth major item is going to be spirit visage. This item is good as it provides Shen with magic resist, health and more stats to help him sustain.
Your fifth item will be Adaptive Helm.
Your final item will be either Locket or Thornmail. This is a good item as it grants extra damage (passive) and gives lots of armor to Shen. Locket gives a shield for yourself and your allies.

Situational Items

If you’re in a horrible matchup where the enemy is a fighter or has a lot of auto damage. Pick up a bramble vest early. This item is good as it gives you Thornmail passive and can really help you out.
If the enemy has a lot of splitpush, you might wanna pick up a ZZ portal to help clear those waves.
    EXAMPLE FULL BUILD

Your starting item should be what you need to survive the laning phase. Do not mindlessly pick an item because it’s recommended. Put thought in what you need to survive in the laning phase. Your first major item is going to be Titanic Hydra. This item is good on Shen as it gives him damage and also defensive stats as well as sustain. Overall a good item on him because it allows him to get stronger. Your second core item will be boots. I recommend getting either the Magic resist ones (Merc Treads) or the armour ones (Ninja Tabi). Buy the boots that will be most beneficial. After you have your boots you want to get a sun fire cape. This item is really good because it gives him armor and health. The passive on the item is good too and allows you to split push more often and succeed on doing so. Your fourth major item is going to be spirit visage. This item is good as it provides Shen with magic resist, health and more stats to help him sustain. I love this item on him because of the added cooldown reduction. Your fifth item will be Adaptive Helm. Your final item will be either Locket or Thornmail. This is a good item as it grants extra damage (passive) and gives lots of armor to Shen. Locket gives a shield for yourself and your allies.

Example Full Build – Titanic Hydra, Merc Treads, Sunfire Cape, Spirit Visage, Adaptive Helm and Thornmail.

Honorable Mentions:

If you’re in a horrible matchup where the enemy is a fighter or has a lot of auto damage. Pick up a bramble vest early. This item is good as it gives you Thornmail passive and can really help you out.

If the enemy has a lot of splitpush, you might wanna pick up a ZZ portal to help clear those waves. Are you behind and the enemy has supers? Pick up a zz.

VS

Cho'Gath

Medium

This is not a hard lane, however it is frustrating to play against. He will not be able to kill you unless you get caught out. Try to dodge his abilities where possible. His passive and sustain is annoying to play against. Just farm up and try to deny him as much as possible. Beware of his knock up and silence as they can cancel your ultimate.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Easy

This is an easy matchup for Shen as he has an easy time versus most tank champions. In this lane you want to fight them early and put them behind. At level 3 you can go for a trade and try to put him behind. Avoid his Q’s as the damage is ridiculous. Try to put him behind and taunt him when he gets cocky.

VS

Gragas

Easy

This is an easy matchup for Shen as he has an easy time versus most tank champions. In this lane you want to fight them early and put them behind. At level 3 you can go for a trade and try to put him behind. Beware of his E and Ultimate as they can both cancel your ultimate. This is a farm lane, but he can kill you if you let him get ahead. Make sure to dodge his ultimate/bodyslam with your taunt.

VS

Heimerdinger

Hard

This is a hard lane because he will poke you and harass you whenever you come to farm. I recommend freezing it near your tower and playing really safe. This is because he will just out range you and deny you if you try to play offensively. Do not push this wave because he will deny you farm and you will be useless later on in the game. Also, sacrifice CS for experience to stay up with him. Once you have your 3 abilities you can go for a trade. Get early Magic resist and beware of his sustain.

VS

Kayle

Hard

This is a hard lane because he will poke you and harass you whenever you come to farm. I recommend freezing it near your tower and playing really safe. This is because he will just out range you and deny you if you try to play offensively. Do not push this wave because he will deny you farm and you will be useless later on in the game. VS

Maokai

Easy

Maokai is an easy champion to lane against because he is a tank. In general, Shen has an easy time against most tanks- Maokai being one of them. I recommend you poke him and go for trades when you have your passive and all three abilities up. Beware of his saplings damage especially in and around the topside bushes.

VS

Nasus

Easy

This is a medium matchup for Shen as he has an easy time versus most tank champions. In this lane you want to fight them early and put them behind. At level 3 you can go for a trade and try to put him behind. Beware, this is a frustrating matchup because he has sustain and his slow. His slow is frustrating to play against.

VS

Quinn

Hard

This is a hard lane because he will poke you and harass you whenever you come to farm. I recommend freezing it near your tower and playing really safe. This is because he will just out range you and deny you if you try to play offensively. Do not push this wave because he will deny you farm and you will be useless later on in the game. Also, sacrifice CS for experience to stay up with her. Once you have your 3 abilities you can go for a trade.

VS

Singed

Easy

This is an easy matchup for Shen as he has an easy time versus most tank champions. In this lane you want to fight them early and put them behind. At level 3 you can go for a trade and try to put him behind. Beware of using your ultimate as he can cancel it with his E. If he attempts to proxy farm you- let him. You won’t be able to kill him and you’ll be wasting your time. Just farm under tower.

Also, sacrifice CS for experience to stay up with him. Once you have your 3 abilities you can go for a trade. Get early Magic resist and beware of his sustain. His W can cancel your ultimate.

Also, sacrifice CS for experience to stay up with him. Once you have your 3 abilities you can go for a trade. Get early Magic resist and beware of his sustain.

VS

Yasuo

Easy

Try to fight him when there is no minions around so he cannot escape. He can be very mobile because of his sweeping blade. When his passive shield is down, that is the best time to fight him. I recommend you poke him and go for trades when you have your passive and all three abilities up.

Early Game Shen Back to Top

In the early game you need to focus on farming and gaining a farm advantage. You want to farm and keep trying to fight when possible. In the very early levels you are rather squishy and depending on who you’re against you may have an easy or hard time. You want to get level 2 first, and level 3 too. I recommend trying to poke when possible. If you’re against a champion who is melee then this will be easier- you can trade when they go to auto minions. If they are ranged, you will have to sacrifice some CS for experience. When you are level 3, you have gank potential because of your taunt. You can set up ganks by freezing the wave and taunting the enemy when your jungler comes. Beware, your taunt can be easily juked- keep this in mind when using it and do not make the gank to obvious. At level 6, you want to keep an eye on your team and prepare your ultimate for use. Make sure to stay out of range of enemies when using your ultimate as any CC can cancel your ultimate.

Mid / Late Game Shen Back to Top

In the Mid game you need to have farmed up to a good level, have your items and being tanky too. In this part of the game you have two major options. The first being split push constantly and use you’re ultimate to get to your team. This is the better option but highly situational.  Split pushing is pushing side waves while your team is in another lane fighting. Depending on your team comp, this might be the better option. Shen with items has an easy time split pushing and clearing waves. You can use your ultimate to save your team or escape. The second is to group and help your team. Shen is a tank and should be the frontline. Always stay in front of your team and taunt anyone who comes close to them or is out of position. Do not go to deep if your team can not follow up.  You can use specific flash combos on Shen if you need too.

In the ending part of the game you main job is to catch people, split push and protect your carries with your ultimate. Remember, you’re the frontline not the backline. Make sure to stand in front of your carries but be prepared to fall back and peel them if they are being jumped on. Do not waste your ultimate.

Tips and Tricks Back to Top

Shen is a rather basic champion. With that being said, there are many cool little tricks you can do with him and in this section I will provide you with some helpful tips and tricks as well as ability combinations.

Tips and Tricks:

Make sure that you keep an eye on the map and your team’s health. Your ultimate can save your team mates and turn a fight. Use it if an allied champion is being ganked and turn the matchup into an even one.

You can use your flash to taunt enemies. Did you know, Shen can E Flash or Flash E? Shen can taunt enemies if he flash E’s at the correct time. Practice makes perfect when learning this move.

Your Q slows enemies who are hit by it. Use this to your advantage by using it to slow enemies when escaping.

Make sure that no enemies can cancel your ultimate. Your ultimate will stop channeling if you’re effected by crowd control such as silences, stuns or knock ups.

Always purchase ward first before any other items. This will make your second ward up quicker which can prevent an early level 3 gank by the enemy. This will also give your team knowledge of the enemy if they show.

Like I said previously, Shen is rather Easy. However, he does have some combos that can help you in lane and team fights.

E Q: This is an example combo that will be your main combo in lane. Make sure to be behind the enemy so you can get the added speed and damage.

E Q W: This is the same combo above. But this time you will block enemy autos. This will be your main combo in team fights

E F : This is a combo that is hard to master. However, once mastered is very strong. You need to Taunt (E) and then before it ends, Flash on the enemy- this should taunt the enemy. (E > Flash > taunt enemy)
