Summoner Spells Back to Top

These are summoners based around aggressive playing. More on this later, the point is you are trying to be a major threat throughout the game by creating splitpush and kill pressure through 14.png. The other more useful option is splitpush and objective pressure through 12.png as you directly benefit from being able to secure dragons.  Unless you really have to, try not to use teleport to return to lane. More on this later. 14.png and 3.png are optional based on match ups. For example 68_64.png39_64.png92_64.png list goes on really. If you are feeling confident, its for matchups where the enemy champion has to exhaust the majority of their kit to commit for a kill, in which case you can 3.png and 14.png to severely punish them. Not as useful against things like 24_64.png58_64.png and 122_64.png.

New Runes Back to Top

Notables : Press the Attack, Second Wind, Bone plating

Custom: Legends. You can pick which one you prefer. Attack speed for dps, lifesteal for the sustain and tenacity for mid game.

Masteries Back to Top

Its come to my attention that thunder lords decree is ok, fervor got an update so i have made adjustments to accommodate this revelation.

  • Splitpushing
  • Dueling
  • Gank / Jungle Terrorism
  • Burst trades
  • Peeling
While Thunderlords is great in lane, fervor builds quite quickly with a basic combo. if you have the opportunity you may even delay the casting of Q and W to increase the scaling damage, otherwise its a general damage increase in short to extended trades.

The basic of Shyvana's kit can be observed at levels 2 and 3.
  1. Land a Flame Breath.pngFlame Breath(E)
  2. Auto, Twin Bite.pngTwin bite(Q) , Auto. Speed is the key.
  3. Back off, or dont. Hit a couple times more if you think you can get away with it.
Having W at level one could potentially out trade melees at level one. However the ability is on a 12 second cooldown and is AOE. It will push the minions to their side, you run the risk of drawing a lot of early attention to yourself. So having E and Q for equal single target trading is better option while you manage the minion wave and come to understand what the enemy jungler is up to. This is all in preparation for the moment you hit level 3.

Next is having Burnout.pngburnout(W) which adds a little more depth to how you approach the 3 step combo.

Based on various circumstances there are three skill builds that I utilize. R>W>Q>E  ,R>W>E>Q, and R>E>W>Q.

RWQE Versus RWEQ

42105875229dcb04c8a999377244a3aa.png
Firstly there are difference in terms of the damage you do overall because of this , that and the other thing.
Thats a lot of league math i frankly don't feel like doing because of all the variables we have to account for. So for simplicity sake both skill builds accomplish the same thing. Woo get hyped. It boils down to personal preferences and adaptability. I personally ask myself a set of questions as guidelines so by level 7 i can make a dedicated choice in optimization.
  • What is my opponent building?
  • What are his/her runes and masteries?
  • What is the general build path of the enemy team?
  • What is my team building?
With this information maybe i want to do more magic damage to exploit the lack of hp and mr. Perhaps i would like to do more physical damage because the lack of armor and sustain. There are risks involved with both. For reference ill leave this here, a bit from lolwiki page. Shyvana Wiki
Note the cooldowns this is important.

  1. Maxed E :Reduced cooldowns so you can use it more, with penetration in your masteries there no worries about having the majority of the damage mitigated. It becomes a farming and harassing tool; however like this the cooldown on Q is quite high so you run the risk of losing trades if opponent decides to engage when you miss your E.
  2. Maxed Q: I mostly choose to max Q second. Reduced cooldown, more burst, and because of how her passive works coupled with the fact that I would usually rush a 3153_32.png. It works.  The problem is there is always a long period between the times you engage a full fight. You still do damage, and you still have alot of sustain; but landing E and fighting with its active mark is the bread and butter of Shyvana's dueling potential.
Whatever you feel conformable with both paths get the job done.

REWQ

b630152e70963d1a0aa56cfeffc3d653.png

There is nothing wrong with taking a safer route to ensure victory in the laning phase. This skill path is for countering range harassment, or if you are feeling nervous about a match up. If you like this set you can use it as you please. If you feel confidant about your ability to outplay those ranged champions, you wont have to use it.

Ultimate.

You can use Ultimate to fight, run, chase, or engage. Very liberal with its options, aside from the obvious don't use it on minions. You will have to get a feel for that starting and ending point of the cast animation, as it is quite awkward to control at close ranges. Its very easy to undershoot so, as a general tip till you get it down. Aim past the target. The cooldown range from 150/75/50 seconds normally without attacking, 60/40/30 in lane to as low as 17/16/14. Note the ult is unstoppable, you can no longer be knocked out of the animation.

Situational Items

Emphasis on burst VS heavy AP/Caster Team

Have a form of sustain through 1053_32.png is important. The only big thing Shyvana lacks as a champion is meaningful early sustain so with 1400 gold3144_32.png you are essentially set and you could build all defensive items. GG. However that is not what we are here to do.

The second major buy being a defensive item is only to insure that all trades and duels go into your favor. You also have the HP and armor to successfully, skirmish, zone or tower dive in the mid game if necessary.

Its pretty elementary, but  believe its worth noting. On the fly decision making and dynamism is as important as mechanics so i designed this build with emphasis on cooldown reduction and shredding with breaks in between buys to pick up useful components just in case the situation changes suddenly.  3044.png,1031.png,3067.png,3211.png are a very good ones. For instance enemy 245.png picks up a double kill bot lane with a teleport, even if you were winning instead of finishing 3153.png you may need to stop at 3144.png to pick up 3211.png,3111.png to deal with the sudden increase in his damage.

VS

Aatrox

Easy

Trade and farm normally. Use Burnout to evade aatrox's Q to avoid getting knocked up. Afterwards all in rotation. The slow from E will stop you in your tracks so avoid getting hit by it. As the match up stretches forward he will begin to out sustain and dps you completely. From that point you have to rely on out playing his abilities and passive to win.

VS

Akali

Easy

Easy. Avoid taking free damage and get an early 1011_32.png after3144_32.png to survive akali's first round of burst. Even without it you should be able to just lay into her if she goes in.

VS

Alistar

Medium

I cant believe i have to add alistar to the list of top match ups. Well two things will happen. Truthfully three.

  1. You will have to output as much damage as fast as possible before getting knocked up and knocked back.
  2. Outplay Pulverize with the movespeed bonus of burnout and position yourself in a way that you are headbutted into a wall, or parallel/slightly behind cowman.
  3. You get camped because alistar gank assists, and tower diving potential is op.
Your base stats and runes should be enough to negate the magic damage alistar dishes out and because of his high manacosts and cooldown you can sustain pretty well between trades. The main reason Alistar is rated medium here is because he will have a stronger game impact than you with unbreakable will and tons of cc.

VS

Camille

Medium

Camille is strong and she has alot more tools than you. She is likely to win short trades however she will not be able to withstand drawn out exchanges against shyvanaimmolationaura.pngandshyvanafireball.png active. So it may be worth if you are familiar with stun rules. The idea is to activate shyvanaimmolationaura.png and cast shyvanafireball.png in quick succession before getting hit withcamillee.pngorcamiller.png so that you deal damage while stunned and shyvanadoubleattack.png combo afterwards. Depending on what Camille does after she lands camillee.png  you may set yourself in position to dodge her disengage/sustain tool camillew.png by using the boost in movement speed to get inside the inner cone. After that point she has nothing left to use. She may also cast camillew.png after using camillee.png in which case just fall back the slow is too strong to chase the damage is not as high as camilleq.png  in lane phase so its sustainable.

VS

Cho'Gath

Easy

Use burnout till after you getting ruptured, or use burnout to run through/around/or stop before the circle. Just avoid getting knocked up and you'll be able to fight hard. Also its helpful to cast Q before getting close to avoid getting silenced.

VS

Darius

Medium

Darius can trade with you but not for long. Avoid getting caught in the hit zone of Q. Either dodge completely or get inside. ONLY position inside if you are for an all in. Remember in the early lane phase things can go wrong really fast.

VS

Diana

Easy

Just all in rotation whenever you can or basic trading combo. Dont get poked down too hard.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Easy

dodge cleavers, buy sustain, win lane. Easy.

VS

Ekko

Medium
Only reason I'm really listing Ekko as a medium is because he has alot of tools, hes very new, and I've never played against Ekko as Shyvana. So as a general rule from what I've seen so far is : Dont Take any Free Damage. Whatever Ekko gives, you can return in full or more. Here are some things I've thought of.
Even as AD Ekko a large amount of his damage is magic, so an early 3211_32.png will help you power through some of the forced trades. It's better save burnout to the last second so you can chase him down after he procs his passive on you. It may be hard to read but use W just before he is going to auto attack for the 3rd hit, this way whether or not he does proc it you will be able to unload your rotation on him. This is all from a defensive position. If he misses Q or misuses his sphere/dash, dont be afraid to unload everything. Hes fairly squishy so a full rotation will force him pop potions or even back.

VS

Elise

Medium

Any good elise will bully you. Wait it out till you have enough gold for sustain and some mr. Afterwards proceed to all in rotation to chase her off or burn escapes, after that you can ult for kills.

VS

Fiora

Medium

Bait Riposte. WAIT for it to end before using Q, you may have to just deal with the attack speed slow by procing it with your burnout which is where thunderlords burst comes into play. Use your burnout to keep your vitals out of position.

Remember this general fiora counter. Vitals disappear if you walk off her screen, not hiding in a brush but generally off the screen view. her vitals are either in the front or in the back and they alternate. So whenever you are free and have a vital in the front simply move off screen to switch them to the back.

VS

Gangplank

Medium

Just fight. Dont miss skills and you'll be alright. Try your best not to get caught in a barrel blast.

VS

Garen

Medium

Garen is easy to read. If he comes to harass with Q simply back up for minions, E , W ,Q in a single stroke so you can have everything up if the silence lands. This becomes easier when you have some sustain. Early armor is now mandatory as his damage only increases with level a 3742.png after some sustain will be enough to survive the blackcleaver spin fights.

VS

Gnar

Medium

Theres no sure fire way to dealing with Gnar. My honest advise is to stay focused, keep the mistakes to a minimum and play by your gut. Gnars weaknesses are your strengths and his strengths are your weaknesses. This creates a fun equilibrium, may the best top laner win. With that said.

Defense is most certainly the best offense. Gnars innate close range kiting kit leaves him little to fear from your movespeed dependent gapcloser.  Moving this match up closer in favor of Gnar. Note while mini gnar will go down very quickly if you land a combo on him do not force yourself too far from minions. Any kind of extended chasing on gnar is a bad time waiting to happen. Ideally you want to fight mega gnar the lumbering cast times and movement makes mega gnar easy pickings. Dodge Q and W and you can get alot of damage done which will show up big when hes back to mini.

A gank while hes in mega form will most likely result in death or force him to back. So let your team know whats up, this will quickly turn the match up towards you.

VS

Gragas

Medium

Playing against Gragas requires a little patience. Hes hard to catch, and he has alot of utility. Your best bet in this match up is to harass him when he comes to auto attack minions.  Otherwise farm, try not to eat barrels, small burst trades when possible, and watch out for ganks thats alot of CC.

VS

Graves

Medium

Short ranged but he can still be a problem to deal with, watch his shell count and try your best to not to eat too many gravesclustershot.png in general or near walls.

VS

Illaoi

Medium

Illaoi is quite the push over with a little sustain. Use shyvanaimmolationaura.png to kite around falling testicles and illaoiQ.png. Its very easy to punish illaoiE.png to prevent getting cursed. Its important to note as always learn her cooldown and uniquely for illaoi - You are more likely to die while receiving assistance from a team mate due toillaoiR.png. So try to stick to one on ones.

VS

Irelia

Easy

Great irelias would be rated medium to hard, but not everyone is a great irelia. burnout after the slow, or burn out before the stun. Do not be afraid to fight. If you feel uncomfortable you can build 3143_32.png after getting some sustain.

VS

Jarvan IV

Medium

Jarvan is a special case. Dont let the princess fool you, through a combination of buffs, debuffs, similar items, and natural burst; J4 can fight you. If he gets a small advantage he will start to walk all over you because his AD ratios are very high. You have to do a little more work than usual to beat dominate this lane. First off never getting poked too much, you'll have to actively bait and dodge while trying to maintain the minion wave, and you'll have to punish mistakes accordingly. His cooldowns are pretty short so you dont have alot of time to react.

VS

Jax

Medium

If counterstrike is being used, burnout and stay out of his attack range. If you can kite outside the stun zone perfect, now turn and kill after its over. If he hops on something, punish with basic combo. Easy to Hard matchup depending on which item he completes first do note this.

VS

Jayce

Medium

RANGED. farm and get sustain. Dorans shield will help. heres something to look out for.

  • This guy cant fight you 1v1, so if he attemps to try an all in with hammer. just go.
  • if he switches into hammer stance at any point try to get some damage in.
  • you can max E if you like to counter the harass. otherwise you have to wait for an opportunity or gank.

VS

Kayle

Medium

RANGED - Due to cooldown nerfs on R Kayle lane is a little more manageable, but will still require you to all in frequently. Kalye is hybrid like yourself so the 2 major counter items including some early sustain are. If you can out sustain the harass it will be easier to all in her with dragon's decent since she will be low on mana.

  • 1011_32.png If AD focused
  • 3211_32.png If AP focused

VS

Kennen

Medium

RANGED. - You can max E if you want. Otherwise wait for the moment kennen has no energy or gets too close. Dodge Qs and try not to take too much harass for cs.

VS

Lee Sin

Easy

You will win most trades anyway with or without sustain, but just in case. Use burnout to get out of lee sin's E tempest range so he cant use cripple on you.

VS

Lulu

Medium

RANGED - same rule with all ranged match ups. Max E if you want, or you can wait for an opening to strike. Lulu's mana costs are pretty high and it's easy to dodge her Q. If you have burnout up it will still be active if you get polymorphed so that's a thing to remember.

VS

Maokai

Medium

I do not know much about this match up I havent played against a maokai top before as shvyana. So here are some things to note.

  • Maokai's built in sustain
  • Magic damage knock up CC with a base 6 second cooldown.
  • Magic damage as max hp.
  • Saplings slow you.
  • Ultimate will reduce some damage and punish you for fighting inside of it.
  • If he roams he will cause problems for the team.

VS

Nasus

Medium

Don't let him farm and just sit in lane all game. if we wanna get really smart, grab the earliest 3074_32.png for short bursts harassment so wither doesnt become a problem for your dps.

VS

Nidalee

Medium

Ranged. Magic burst while building AD. You will have to wait for a mistake like if nidalee misses any ability in cougar form, or gets caught in minions in human form. (dont bet on this one)

VS

Olaf

Medium

Old olaf would have eaten you alive. Although he operates on a similar concept it is not the same. Simply do not let him sustain with his W for free or openly harass you with E, and you'll be ok. - had to increase this difficulty because of the sustain from grasp of the undying.

VS

Ornn

Medium
ornnw.png Very dangerous spell to play around when you dont have sustain, shyvanaimmolationaura.png use this to move out of the spray and follow up with a quick shyvanafireball.pngshyvanadoubleattack.png combo.

VS

Pantheon

Medium

Works like a ranged champion but with high manacosts and a stun that puts himself in burnout range; the match up becomes manageable. You are at a disadvantage till you have some HP, little armor and sustain.

VS

Poppy

Easy

There are two kinds of poppy players. Ones that will outplay you completely and carry the game, and the others we dont talk about. Play it smart and you will win with ease. use burnout to move around poppydevastatingblow.png second hit.

You can miss shyvanatransformcast.png completely is you cast it while poppyw.png is up.

VS

Quinn

Hard

Quinn is a huge pain.  You may have to start dorans shield and wait for jungle/mid support. Once you acquire a lead on quiin however it is easy to snowball it. Use your wave clear to continuously pressure the turrets. You will not be able to kill her because annoying things but you are free to kill enemy jungler.

VS

Renekton

Easy

Dont get bullied and chunked too early in the lane. You can trade better starting at level 3 because you will always out damage him from that point on. If you know you will get caught with the stun just turn on burnout to give some damage back.

VS

Rengar

Easy

Avoid the brush juggle and you it will be an easier fight.

VS

Riven

Easy

The normal fill of riven players will make mistakes and you can punish them. A smarter better riven picks their fights better.  So just stay on your toes. Flash the riven ultimate if you see it coming during a fight.

VS

Rumble

Easy

You can get kited and punished if you attempt to combo. So for most of the match up you will be farming, poking with E, and waiting for a mistake.  - Lowered due to rumble being very weak now.

VS

Ryze

Medium

Ranged. Same rules. Its important to note however ryze is really short ranged, with basic sustain and 3269_32.png you will have no problem with going all in. Ryze also cannot push lanes, so if you find yourself with a huge advantage you can push turret easily. Use your minions and his ground indicator well. The whole game revolves around you knowing what he can do. Watch his combos, the only reason you will lose a trade or die is because you were not paying attention to his spell count.

VS

Shen

Easy
shenfeint.png makes things a little difficult. It best that you learn the cooldowns of his abilities and act accordingly.  Just watch out for ganks.

VS

Shyvana

Hard

Hard mode! Heres a match up you can test your skills. Mirror lane rules apply, small advantages shift the game dramatically.

VS

Singed

Easy

Don't chase singed. Small burst whenever he gets too close, and stay out of the fart gas. Early sustain is vital. Once that is achieved you can easily zone him away, or freeze the lane. The only real threat is a high damage jungler.

VS

Sion

Easy

Use burnout to run circles around a charging sion. Charging in all senses. If hes running to you with W up take the damage and fight back. Unless he is super ahead, you will always deal more damage than sion can in trades. He is likely aware of this and will play a farm and waveclear game. Use this to your advantage to either zone him, or freeze the lane.

VS

Swain

Medium

Ranged. Recommend maxing E first since this guy will most likely kite you anyway. If you feel confidant all ins after dodging his W will most likely result in a kill.3144_32.png

VS

Talon

Easy

Cant out damage you. So, fight all the time. Just dont get poked too much rake will hurt more the later in lane.

VS

Teemo

Hard

:(  Theres no real counter building for teemo, he will shred through you regardless. This is assuming you go even. What you want to do is all in when you have the chance and get some early ganks. Another thing to note is he can harass you all he wants, but he cannot out trade you. So if you see any openings, cooldowns, or mistakes its in your best interests to abuse that window and retreat just as fast.

Other than that; Maxing E, farming and roaming later is a great idea

VS

Trundle

Medium

Trundle is a tricky match up. Pre-6 you have the advantage. Post 6 he can turn a fight quite easily and will continue to do so throughout the game. So its best to not bump heads for too long. Ware him down and try to get out the bulk of your damage before your attack damage gets reduced.

VS

Tryndamere

Medium

Fighting against tryndamere is tricky. Your window of opportunity is generally small since fury and his crit chance will build quickly. Use the time he has little to no fury to do some damage. Harass when he tries to get CS, use burnout to kite around his attack range.

  • Its an even match pre-6. Dont eat crits.
  • Post-6 you'll have to play a lot smarter to get around endless rage.
  • You have a large window before tryndamere gets the items he needs to dominate duels. With some jungle help you can shut him down.
14.png3.png this is a great combo for dealing with tryndamere. especially 3.png

VS

Udyr

Easy

Don't get caught in the Udyr level 2 tiger cheese and you will be just fine through out the game. If hes building phoenix it may be useful to get a little mr after sustain.

VS

Urgot

Medium

Ranged and can reduce your damage. With a jungler this is an easy kill. one on one, you can get kited because of his shield. When that is down all he has is the damage reduction and is generally slow. Dodge the E to avoid getting heavily poked, urgot players will generally telegraph when they are going to try to use it.

VS

Vladimir

Easy

Ranged. Vladimir is slow and if you burnout to close the gap you will most likely reach him everytime to do damage. I would still wait for him to extend into the minions before attempting that to minimize how much damage you will take in return, and maximize how much damage you will do. Once trollpool is down all ins are super effective.

VS

Wukong

Easy

Cannot out damage you, also uses alot of mana to fight. Generally easy lane.

VS

Xin Zhao

Easy

Fairly easy lane. xin is a bursty one trick pony. Use burnout to escape the QE combo into knock up. Once the buff fades turn and fight there's nothing he can do.

VS

Yasuo

Easy
3047_32.png That is all. Jokes.
Dont take free damage in lane. Dodge and punish, or give more back. Also 3047_32.png maybe 3143.png if you mess up.

VS

Yorick

Medium

New yorick new problems, with similar solutions.

You can sustain off ghouls as always, they are far more susceptible getting destroyed by aoe abilities. That being said you cant ignore them, you have to respect the ghouls' damage so dodge yoricke.png at all costs.yorickr.png also this thing does an infuriating amount of damage if you let it, so when its used disengage till its gone or kill it when its separated from yorick.

VS

Zac

Easy

Dodge the slow from Q and fight. This champion relies on his max hp and magic dps to win. Little mr wont hurt. Even without it, dont take free damage and you should win easily.

VS

Zoe

Hard

Rangeed match up. Dodge zoeq.pngzoew.pngzoee.png and punish if possible. Top zoe may struggle to land zoee.png so it will be obvious shes preparing to use it when she leaves lane or enters the fog. More dangerous than her is the jungler paired with zoee.png

Introduction Back to Top

Hello! Shyvana is a mobile, hybrid damage bruiser. Although popularly placed in the jungle because she excels in clearing camps and creating pressure through her mobility and mixed aoe damage.  Its for those same reasons she can have the same effect in the top lane. With a very aggressive play style and set up in mind and some limitations that will be discussed; Shyvana is a great choice for dueling, split pushing, jungle invasion, multi-lane pressure, and creating gank demand. What this means is that through excessive pushing and bullying you can force enemy jungler and mid lane to rotate. Providing your team ample opportunity to take objectives or dive bot lane. I believe the true joy of being a top laner is found in strength and skill, something very akin to fighting games contact sports, or martial arts.  Stepping on that rock, pound your chest or let out a war cry! Lets have some fun!

Make your voice loud and clear, I am here. Get some

(Just don't get caught. :D)
Full Flexing aside;
being a hybrid damage bruiser already gives Shyvana a heavy advantage. Other champions cannot effectively build against her without sacrificing gold for their core items, making it very easy for Shyvana to out trade and bully enemies out of lane She can also fight and win in 2v1 or 2v2 situations throughout most of the early and mid game. She can also splitpush and counter jungle without much effort.  Shyvana excels in mid game skirmishes and is the point of the game where you are at your strongest and you want to try to close out a game. Transitioning into late game likewise with many other fighters and bruisers; we begin to discover the limitations of the role. Shyvana's cons coupled with team fighting situations you will have to step back and re-evaluate how to play your role and adapt a more supportive one. This build and style I'm suggesting is ideal for killing opposing jungler and top laner, of course dispatching any carry with ease. However you will not last very long getting focused of kited severely.

One of Shyvanas many strength in particular is that Flame Breath(E) upon landing the opponent they will be marked, basic attacks against marked targets will deal bonus magic damage equal to 2.5% of their max health.
This is our money maker.

Pros
  • Very Durable
  • Mixed Single Target Damage
  • Mixed AoE Damage
  • Resource-less
  • Mobile
Cons
  • No Disables. Shyvana does have the ability to "knockback" enemies for a variable distance.
  • Lack of sustain. (Weak to pokes)
  • Kitable

Early Game Back to Top

Early Levels

In comparison other popular champion picks such as 58_64.png92_64.png,48_64.png,39_64.png and 24_64.png. Shyvanas levels one and two are pretty weak. It is ok to take a step back if you feel the aggression might be overwhelming and it would put yourself into a bad position. Being the first to level 2 is not that important. Dying and losing a ton of exp is a far bigger challenge than anything for the level 1 and 2. To clarify why I take either E20px-Flame_Breath.png or Q20px-Twin_Bite.png first rather than W20px-Burnout.png which does more total damge. Is simply because this portion of the phase is not important enough to try anything fancy, rather its a personal preference. W20px-Burnout.png does more total damage than E20px-Flame_Breath.png and Q20px-Twin_Bite.png however that is total damage and i feel alot of the time level 1 fights dont last long enough for total damage to be relevant and that  Q20px-Twin_Bite.png and E20px-Flame_Breath.png are better defensive options while I get to know my opponent. If more time is needed step back from the wave a little bit and stay in exp range. With that said if at any point you do take damage from an aggressive early play, do not take that damage for free. Give something back, remember minions hurt and they are on your side now. Whether you picked E20px-Flame_Breath.png or Q20px-Twin_Bite.png first, basic attacks coupled with minion argo does damage.

Do keep track of how many minions die. The 7th minion grants level 2. If you do suspect they will get level two before you and you suspect an aggressive play do stepback and wait for your level 2 minion wave. Upon reaching level 2 you have more freedom to do small trades.
  • As they come for CS on -your side zone- you can Q20px-Twin_Bite.png and back off.
  • As they come for CS on -your side zone-, and there is CS you must get as well, position yourself to E20px-Flame_Breath.png for the minion and champion, and Q20px-Twin_Bite.png to follow up if they are close enough. Note that because we are on -your side zone- there is most likely more enemy minions. Do be careful not to get CC'd in the minion wave.
  • Try your best from letting level 3 minion wave from reaching the turret. Even if just a little bit dont let caster minions get in turret range at least.

Jungle Changes

With different combinations of builds, paths, styles and champions there are some details that we must be address and respect. There's a lot to go over but there's a secret solve it all.

BUY WARDS! UPGRADE TRINKET! WARDS OP!

Feel like I've heard this song before. Joking aside lets look at the details. Smites and enchantments. Im going to streamline this section by importance. Warrior enchantment and stalkers(chilling) smite are scary.

  • The important piece you must understand about warrior enchantments of any kind is that its cheap and gives is user 50 AD and 10% cooldown reduction. It's aggressively effective for its price seeing as jungler are capable of finishing the item before you are able to complete a defensive item in combination with a core offensive item. You simply may not have armor and hp to duel junglers or survive the 1v2  very long. Critically important against these ones 48_64.png254_64.png107_64.png64_64.png
  • 3707_32.pngStalker's Chilling smite. Small flat true damage and a 2 second movement speed steal (20%). Unless you are fighting you want to avoid using burnout till after the smite is cast.
  • 3714_32.png Challanger's smite. Damage debuff that lasts 6 seconds. In a 1v2 you want to run regardless. In a 2v2 unless you can burst down the caster efficiently it's highly recommenced that you focus the lane target instead. In 1v1 I would suggest not wasting any resources on the kill until the debuff is over.
  • Runic Echo Enchant serves its purpose as standard AP jungler item.
  • 1416.pngBloodrazor. A special enchantment that has a larger impact mid to late game than it does during the lane phases. Physical damage on hit and attack speed will serve its purpose heavily in duels, dont get baited into those. 19_64.png11_64.png
  • Hey Chris, what about cinder hulk? Its almost laughable how much of a nothing cinder hulk has become over the last couple patches. Im not saying its bad, I'm saying you're Shyvana with maybe a BORK. If you're strong enough you could 2v1 by focusing down the top laner in dragon form. Otherwise normal 2v1 rules and just back off.

How to Handle Being Behind

Unfortunately it happens either you or someone else messed up. There are many cause, the point is you are behind by level and gold.  Your primary objective is now to catch up and prevent falling further behind. Here is what you have to do.
  1. Stay calm and collected. If you rage and cannot somehow transform your anger into winning the game, chances are high that you will continue to make mistakes, or start making them.
  2. Farm, ward, and repeat. You are at the mercy of this game. You are simply waiting for an opportunity to pull ahead. Dont make unnecessary risk trying to create an opportunity for yourself, simply wait for your opponent to make a mistake. If its not him, its somebody else be on the look out.
  3. Most people in solo queue are brutal. With blood in the water you have to expect to be ganked and dived on a regular. Be vigilant and trust your gut, and if you must die try to take one with you. Every bit of gold is worth it.
Dont lets the salt control you. Let it fuel you. Ever played a hard video game where you get killed alot? (Souls, megaman, trails, league) You want to get good to the point you gracefully clear stages with ease. Thats the feeling you have to utilize to drive yourself to pseudo-perfection. True perfection is number one in the world, what we have is consistency, and the possibility of infamy. We can only get better from there. Am I right?

Feel the Fire

Coming up is level 3 soon after granting you full access to your kit, and jungler. At this point you can repeat the above but this time always lead with E20px-Flame_Breath.png before you Q20px-Twin_Bite.png use W to close the small gap, and then quickly fall back into your minion wave. If at anypoint you do get CC in the minion wave, it is fine because they are taking damage from burnout, this also helps push the lane a little bit in perpetration for a gank. Assuming you were able to stop the minion wave a little bit on -your side zone-, with a sudden switch of aggression you are able to set minion wave into -your side neutral zone-.Perfect for a gank.

From level 3 onwards, it is especially important that you keep track of enemy jungler movements. At the same time you should be farming and reacting.  CS while poking. Once you have confirmed where the jungler is and you are safe from ganks for awhile use that time to shove the minion wave to enemy turret. Do this by forcing small trades continously.
  • Open up at the minion wave with E20px-Flame_Breath.png as they come up for CS, W20px-Burnout.png > auto Q20px-Twin_Bite.png auto and then back off into your side once again.
  • If they back off, give chase with W20px-Burnout.png and Q20px-Twin_Bite.png. Use the remaining burnout time to escape to your side or middle brush.
Before the wave reaches -their side zone- You are welcomed to all in with ignite if you can catch them making a mistake like using an ability on a minion or coming too close. But before that use your trinket to ward the river. Around this time if the enemy jungler is not camping or farming, he should be in top side jungle, or if hes blue side getting ready to gank you. You should back and buy the choice 'first buy' items, ward and some potions.

What will happen is that you either reset the lane after you had sent back(/killed) the enemy or he/she froze the lane. Its fine because you now have enough sustain to be a constant nuisance with enough wards to prevent being ganked. And with that we can transition into mid game, because you can repeat this process for very long time. The goal itself for the early game is to be a nuisance to enemy top laner first, once you have successfully put your opponent in his/her place you can proceed to making your presence known for the rest of the enemy team.

Lets talk Map Presence

Unique to Shyvana is her passive interaction with dragons. 10% Bonus damage to dragons and a stacking 5 armor and magic resistance per dragon. You dont have to be present to take dragon but it is definitely beneficial to be prepared to fight around dragon when ever it is up.
Unique to the toplane-o-sphere is the rift herald. Straight to the point you want it if you can. It will be to your benefit to work with your jungler to secure this buff. You can get it after a gank, slaying enemy jungler or during a post dragon rotation. More than before its important that you keep tabs of what objectives are open and where the enemy top laner is. Simply being within the vicinity makes a huge difference for your team. If your opponent uses teleport and you dont have it, just make a strong push for tower objective, place a deep ward and back to buy.

Mid Game and Post lane phase. Back to Top

14.pngThis Fire is Out of Control!14.png

With the constant back and forth assuming you have not fed and missed alot of CS. You should have enough gold for 3153_32.png3742.png3068_32.png and boots of choice.
  • You should be looking to either continue splitting top and taking turrets and enemy jungle camps.
  • Push the top lane and rotate down to pressure mid. this means you push the lane until you have 2 waves of caster minions stacked.
  • If there is a drake or a drake about to spawn move down to take it. AFTER you have also shoved the mid lane to the turret or past the turret if its down already. After which stay with the team and move to taking whatever outter turrets that still remain.
  • If no outter objective remain make your way back to top to fight enemy top laner if he didnt follow. Proceed to push until he/she respawns(yes i assumed you killed the enemy, if you didnt that's ok continue to push anyway) go back to buy. Whatever items and more 3363.png2055.png wards. Now Terrorize the Lane until the next drake.
  • IF enemy top laner follows, these will be short 5v5 skirmishes your objective in these fights are to go ham and kill carries. Never chase without the team.
  • If you feel as though enemy carries have ample peel, do not force it and focus on killing the front line.  Again never chase without the team.  If you manage to kill 1 or 2 enemy champions; with the team move on to an inner objective.
  • If The jungler or midlaner backs off and doesnt listen to the ping to inner objectives just shove bot lane all the way up and go back to buy. 2055.pnggonna needs these as you continue to Terrorize the Lane until the next Drake.
  • If you are unable to duel the enemy top laner or terrorize the lane. Just shove the wave and use your mobility for group with somebody. Following the jungler to make catches is fine, following the botlane to take inner turret is fine. Staying group is generally a good idea but this will transition you directly into late game play style shift.

What I mean by Terrorize the Lane

Its a simple concept.
  1. Ward Deep; entrances,  behind you, and key brushes. If you find someone, chase them off if you are certain nobody is rotating. If nobody is coming take whatever jungle camp is there and check the buffs. After which ward behind you and cut through the jungle to intercept the minions.
  2. Duel Everyone. You will most likely win every 1v1 at this point. If more than one person show up ping other lanes to tell them X is top.
  3. Keep you minions near the next turret keep hammering at it.
  4. You dont have to kill enemy champion, its about sending a message.
  5. The golden rule: dont die. But that aint about to be a problem doe. Cuz you know,

Late Game Back to Top

The Struggle

At this point you've enjoyed all the freedom, being able to do whatever you want, but now you've gotta slow down a little bit. Take a second and look at whats going on.
  • How many objectives are left?
  • Who has what items? What items do I need?
  • Which one of the carries are the most important?
  • In-case of a fight who are the biggest threats to me? Who are the biggest threats to my carries?
  • Define Cooldowns.
  • Whats does the enemy bot lane composition look like?
  • Always have a contingency plan.
Now that we have re-accessed the game you can go back to game full speed.
You may not have space for wards so it will be hard to splitpush from this point without risking getting caught. Getting caught at this point of the game is giving up a turret or a baron. Perhaps even more. So unless there enough vision its highly recommended that you either stay grouped or shove lanes only. Most importantly, getting focused  or CC chained is certain death. You should be able to 1v1 just about anyone. Fighting a melee carry, or  a strong duelist would require a smarter approach but most of your duels should be winnable. For the other fights if you suspect that you can get kited or are being baited, back off immediately. Forcing someone to use a summoner spell is victory in itself.

Team Fighting

When the team fighting does start, or just that general dance here are some things to look for.
  • Is there someone I can catch?
  • Take quick look enemy bruiser positioning. Someone getting ready to catch somebody, somebody is looking to make the first move. Be ready to respond and put out a lot of damage.
  • Your job is to peel for your carries, in this process helping them kill anyone they are attacking.
  • If your carries are not attacking something (what are they even doing?) just attack the nearest overextended target until an enemy carry is isolated, or follow the target.
  • Use your mobility as a way to move around the fight. That's the advantage of being a fighter, you have times to practice observation while remaining productive. Rather than tunneling on zoning a carry only to be kited and killed, its not even guaranteed you can get in anyways since your ultimate Dragons decent is interruptible mid-flight. Randuins omen isn't as strong as it used to be and many of the popular AD carries right now are extremely mobile. Why chase someone around when Shyvana is better suit for fighting a group of enemies or a standing target? BUUUUT
  • If you can catch a group of people with your ultimate dragons decent, AND your team is close enough to follow up. Go hard. A lot of the times with long range engagements you will find yourself alone for an extended period. Couple things can happen at that point, either you kill/heavily damage things, you get killed, or enemies run since you pushed their whole team farther away; these happen as tank shyvana or fighter shyvana it doesn't matter.  Additionally again you run the risk of getting stopped midair.

Tricks and Tips/ Ending Notes Back to Top

Last notes on Shyvana

Every player has their own style to playing top and that's what i really enjoy about the role. It makes every match up unique the only thing that ever remains the same is that one will win, and the other will lose. No two players of any champion play the same. Each player has a funny way of maneuvering the character thats completely unique, that player will continue to operate other champions with that same signature.  Sometimes I'll win a match up really hard and i would say something like "oh boy, this guy had no idea what he was doing". Thats not true, that player simply had his or her own way of playing that particular champion. I simply played better, was more prepared, and possibly had more experience. So here are something you can try that i always do.
  • When you have burnout(W) active, move forward(with the target) with each auto attack to keep them inside the active AoE. When you attack theres a slight movement pause for animation only to be chasing little bit outside of the AoE of burnout missing a tick of damage. Moving forward meaning you position yourself next to or slightly ahead of the target for each attack. Like this the only effective way of running from you is by cutting into the river or brushes making the escape route to their turret longer. This way you are now in position to deal additional damage after the burn out active is gone before backing off to farm again.(versus being at the equal movement speed zone, and having to back off right after burn out ends.)
  • If you can get a hang of opponents movement habits its better to open up with burnout get into (point 1) position where you are next to them. Cast Flame breath(E) followed immediately by an auto twin bite(Q) auto combo. (because Q resets your auto attack timer) then like point 1 says, move forward before you attack again. This way you can get more auto attacks in before burnout fades, and one to two more hits in before flame breath mark fades.
  • As a general tip. Get accustomed to punishing people for little mistakes. Like when a champion auto attacks early on a minion and doesnt kill it setting the timer off than having to make another one so it dies use that opportunity to land E + auto Q auto combo. Here are more exmaples, as you practice or you may already know, things can be applied for most match ups with any champion you play.
  1.  Another exmaple is using a high cooldown ability to sustain on minions. 58_64.png like this guy would.
  2. When champions use movement abilities in attempt to farm and the abilities go on cooldown.39_64.png
  3. If you can see a champion trying to close a gap to you by expending abilities that would normally do damage or be helpful. First use burnout to clear a little space so you don't get slowed or knocked up92_64.png64_64.png and then use the remaining burnout to at least get a E + auto Q auto combo off. Back off before they turn and trade more.
  • This comes with experience but its helpful know. Understanding how much stronger you are based on items, and EXP at all stages of the game in comparison to everything you can fight. Then use that knowledge to plan your next move, or how you should go about outplaying that person in a fight.
  • Always be doing something. If you want go to a spot and do something, go through with it do not stop halfway and return to lane. Take, give something like a ward, buff, jungle camp, lane pressure, or objective. Just finding somebody halfway is good enough before going back. If you find enemy jungler derping around near wraiths you can ping him out allowing your team to either dive bot, take dragon or do nothing because GGSOLO Q_Q. Its the little things.

About me.

Im Chris, or Chrisvonchaos. I started playing league of legends in the beginning of season 2, i played mostly causal normal games with my friends because I was extremely afraid of Solo Queue. Then Season end rewards were announced and I really wanted them. By that time to my surprise I had practice enough in normal games to have easily acquired 1550 ELO for gold. Playing majority solo top, I acquired platinum Season 3, and Diamond season 4. I never climbed higher after being contempt with my rank.  Thats been the theme forever because i have school and stuff to do, get the rank i want and be done. Perhaps next season since i will have time i will try to reach the top of diamond.  Through the normal games I've played i was able to acquire the practice required to meet the minimum, in addition I've learned some very important lessons I wish to share.

  • Always be level headed. You will always be able to analyze a situation better with a clear thoughts. Anger, sadness, depression,  and self loathing. You don't need it, and it shouldn't be in this environment. Complaining in all chat that bot lane is feeding, or the jungler called you something mean; they don't care. I get ranked is a stressful environment and normal games can become stressful, if something makes you upset take all that negative energy and apply it to learning your opponents. That way that same event will never make you upset again.
  • In Solo queue, everyone is playing their own game essentially. Yes its a team game and you have to rely on them to play as team, but that's not what's really happening. Everyone is following their own agenda, often our tasks are the same and we are able to get along, do it together. Its truly a sad story but this is the reality of the game i believe exists.
  • In solo queue, even in real life. If you are not in the position of authority; don't order people around. They really don't like it, and they really don't care. You can however make suggestions. If its a good idea everyone can agree on. They will be like "good call Jimmy, highfive!". After that you can have your inner victory dialogue.
 download.jpg
  • Play every game with the seriousness it deserves. Fun is more interesting when you are winning, that's just my opinion though.
  • Do treat everyone with respect, try not to rage at anyone. Coming back to having a leveled head, you will be able to offer smart suggestions that will improve the quality of their playing. If they truly care about themselves and the game they will consider your advice.
  • Have a good day, thanks for reading and please comment.
