Summoner Spells Back to Top

4.png3.png Flash Exhaust is a standard go to, with good reason. If the enemy jungle plans on ganking bot early, flash is pivotal. If I feel like taking ghost it's usually because I'm planning on going tanky AD and sticking to my target, and I also want a lower cooldown summoner. Ignite seems viable if you want more kill potential, but I find as the initiator I'm already close to the AD carry to exhaust them. Exhaust is also more fitting at peeling for your AD in lane and such, so to say the least it's a heavy staple.

I've been testing ignite more than I ever have before, and it seems to me it's just 100% better, nevermind what I just said. I'll just repeat what some other reputable people have said as well, if there's an Assassin on the enemy team, like yasuo, zed, syndra etc then exhaust is probably better late game.

Did you know that Sion can use active items and exhaust/ignite while in his passive? That means he can Face of the Mountain and Aegis his team, AND exhaust the carry, and focus them while dead. This is very entertaining indeed...
Ok, maybe i'm wrong about summoner spells..

New Runes Back to Top

Masteries Back to Top

I take 9 Defence 21 Utility on my Austrian Homie 14_64.png Not taking some of the supportive masteries in utility seems risky, but it's well worth the risk if you're running ignite on Sion and want your masteries/runes to be about dominating the early game.

9 Offence for the AP poke setup is strong and fun. Sometimes you can even get the double edged sword mastery, if you want to go full out poke city. It's really up to your discretion what to do on a per game basis. I wouldn't go for an AP rune and mastery poke setup unless I knew I wouldn't get blown up by their team.

I tend to take the 3 omitted support masteries of Scavenger, Inspiration and Bandit if I plan on going exhaust and being more of a tank peeler/initiator and less of a shielding support kill laner. Usually I build 2 shields on Sion, which allows me to save my carries from burst later game vs assasins n stuff.

I usually take Q first to stun and do damage for my jungler, it does a lot of damage and is more useful level W/E in lane level 1. I stun 1 or 2 people, try to charge it up as much as possible for max damage level 1, and after stunning I might go in and auto them once just to show them what the **** is up.

Get lots of levels in E, if laning phase is over get points in Q or E. The best sion supports leave W at level 1, there's a reason for this, charged up Q damage is OP and max level E is awesome.
In low elo putting all your points in E and only 1 point in W gives you diminishing returns, so I think alternating points is better in some situations. I try to max my abilities based upon my runes/masteries playstyle, so if I'm going AP poke style ill max E heavily. If I'm going a more tanky CDR support style I get a few levels in W for tanky-ness and damage. A standard OP build would be to max E, then Q, then W. I feel that even with the upcoming mana nerfs, leveling E early on is really good for harassing in lane.  The more % of slow you can get on somebody from long range, the better your chances of catching them off guard with your ultimate to follow up.

If I'm double jungling, as a support jungle I'll take W than Q perhaps, because W does extra damage to creeps.

Situational Items

Getting relic shield/Locket for the double shield is really good, and is a preferable build vs an AoE mid laner mage like lissandra. Usually if theres at least 1 AP on their team, like a swain top but a AD mid like zed I still rush locket for the group shield. After relic shield and locket you can get normal tank items, like Sunfire and Randuins, Frozen Heart and Sprit Visage/Warmogs or you can choose to not build locket, and rush Warmogs before your relic shield, keeping it at Targons. Then I get Face of the mountain, and after that an Iceborn gauntlet, starting with sheen. This is a risky build and isn't very supportive, but it allows you to basically be a support that steps up and carries as a tank, does respectable damage/disruption and is hard to kill. After Iceborn you get normal tank items like I mentioned before, supportive items be damned.

I've tried Righteous glory a few times, but I find that it's build path is sort of awkward, you don't normally want to be building Catalyst on Sion, the mana isnt that useful. If you can build it as a quick combined item later in the game then sure, but I don't recommend rushing it. In theory Rightous glory's speed up when chasing and Ohmwrecker's speed up near turrets would make your R really really fast, I'm not sure if it works that way but yeah.

VS

Akali

Medium

You just have to pink ward her spears.

VS

Alistar

Medium

Alistar is annoying.

VS

Amumu

Medium

If your bronze 4 teammates all stand together you're gonna have a bad time.

VS

Annie

Hard
1_64.pngIf you picked sion support and your enemy picked annie support prepare to get raped. Annie is a pretty bad matchup, even before 6.

VS

Ashe

Easy

 Who plays ashe? Nobody.

VS

Bard

Easy

Bard has a strong slow, his stasis can interupt Sion's Q. Otherwise he's super squishy, I find. He's an easy target to poke out with your leveled up E on Sion.

VS

Blitzcrank

Medium

Sion is fine against blitz, he's so tanky that getting pulled is less punishing. Ignore blitz and tunnel vision the enemy AD, if your adc can't self peel he's gonna die.

VS

Caitlyn

Medium

She has long range, poke, a dash. If she's plat league and above you're gonna be in for something.

VS

Corki

Medium

He's strong versus sion, his W mana cost got nerfed so he's just ok.

VS

Diana

Medium

Diana can be pretty good, she can interrupt your Q.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Medium

Mundo goes where he pleases.

VS

Draven

Medium

No dash, free poke for sion. He's got good damage, who cares.

VS

Ezreal

Easy

Ezreal is a useless champion. Free kill. If you let him poke you and get a manamune? Not so free kill.

VS

Fiddlesticks

Hard

Fiddlesticks is super annoying. Kill it with fire.

VS

Gangplank

Easy

Gangplank support is a real thing, it's not anywhere near as good as Sion support. I'd consider GP support to be a free win for Sion, even if their jungler ganks.

VS

Garen

Medium

Who plays garen? His ultimate is pretty good against a high amount of HP target, garen is good versus sion!

VS

Gragas

Medium

If your enemy is korean and picks gragas support you're screwed.

VS

Graves

Medium

Graves is pretty good vs sion, any ADC with a dash is good versus sion's Q.

VS

Heimerdinger

Easy

I'm pretty sure sion can throw Heimerdingers' turrets at him. So when Heimerdinger support becomes the meta, you know what to pick.

VS

Janna

Medium

Sion can catch Janna off guard with his damage and CC, if you get poked out by their lane you're gonna be in for a hard time.

VS

Jayce

Easy

Sion is okay versus Jayce, later on Sion becomes so tanky and Jayce's damage falls off.

VS

Jinx

Medium

No dash, if you initiate on her late game she's easy.

VS

Kalista

Medium

Annoying and strong, but winnable.

VS

Karma

Medium

Her poke as support is under rated. Watch out!

VS

Kha'Zix

Medium

Protect your teamates, don't feed him, profit.

VS

LeBlanc

Hard

Leblanc is really strong versus Sion because of her mobility, damage or CC. If she wins lane, which she will almost always, it's a hard game if you get roamed on by her.

VS

Lee Sin

Hard

Slippery, He's got like 10 dashes. Nerf him into the ground.

VS

Leona

Medium

Sion is just okay versus Leona, if you can manage to poke our the enemy AD early and win trades you can win.

VS

Lissandra

Medium

Stun her. That's all the advice I've got.

VS

Lucian

Medium

Lucian is high damage, so he's strong versus Sion because he can take Sion's shield out quickly, and poke out your AD carry. He also has his dash, and can dash out of Sion's Q and Ultimate. Lucian is a medium to hard match-up.

VS

Lulu

Medium

Lulu is like Janna, I feel if you poke her AD out early and don't get poked it's just an O.K lane.

VS

Maokai

Medium

I wonder how sion support vs maokai support is. The world may never know.

VS

Morgana

Hard

Morgana is a bad matchup in lane, but later in the game I think she's less of a problem and you're more of a threat.

VS

Nami

Easy

I think of killing Nami like shooting fish in a barrel, or maybe slicing them with an axe, or something.

VS

Zyra

Hard

Old sion used to be pretty good versus zyra. She has every advantage she could want, range, cc, damage. So it's a hard lane.

Sion's strength's and weaknesses. Back to Top

14_64.png Sion's rework turned out to be what he needed to fit in the meta. He got his role redefined as an initiator tank that can be hit or miss, literally. He has surprising damage for a tank and his passive is another place where he really shines, where before the rework Sion's passive had no great utility, with his present one he gets another free way to show his skill. Yes, I'm saying pressing one button and right clicking takes skill.

He's really not good at protecting his AD in lane. His offence is his defence, and he gets little power spikes at level 2-3-4-5, and gets stronger still level 6 and beyond. He's basically a leona, or any tank support but worse at locking people down and better at poking out the enemy laners. He trades their reliability for his unpredictability, he's a surprise pick that shakes up the enemies resolve later in the game where he comes into his own and shines, sometimes out shining the enemy support by leagues in teamfight initiations.

Your AD carry will hate you, your team will hate you, every one will be in a bad mood and be toxic.
That doesn't change what Sion support can do, and exploring new things on the rift is what keeps this game alive, and not like Sion, dead serious.
