Summoner Spells Back to Top

Teleport and flash are what i commonly use, because early farm pressure is very good.

With new teleport changes, i can see ignite being good on him now. I prefer teleport because ignite falls off later on.

How to use teleport right as Sion

when you back, don't just go ham back top and tp up again. you have an ability that lets you clear the fucking map in 8 seconds. look for if bot or mid are in a situation where you can gank, and go in from lane. Middle and bot will think you're ulting back to lane, giving you the element of suprise. after you've done the gank of a lifetime, taken a turret and maybe dragon, THEN teleport top.

Masteries Back to Top

Why 0-12-18 instead of 12-0-18?

The only real reason to get the Ferocity masteries is if you're going raw damage; even then the utility in cunning is so much more useful.

Why Strength of the Ages over Grasp of the Undying?

When sion last hits, he gains 2 max hp permanently, unless it's a large monster or cannon, which he gains 10. if you have strength of the ages, instead of 10 permanent max health, it's 30 permanent max health. this builds up very quickly over time, and gives a massive boost to your innate tank.

W at level 1?

RIP IN PEACE CAMP FOR LEVEL 2

It takes 7 minions to get level 2 in a solo lane, which is about 14 HP. Not a lot, but its a fairly defensive starting spell, and if you take the first wave quickly it shouldn't make a big difference anyways.

W first?

Sion's W is incredible when it comes to clearing waves and doing damage. it will always do the flat percentage of damage no matter who you're against. the range on the detonate is about 500, and if you can constantly use it to poke people down, and the shield gets even stronger.

If you're Jungling Sion, get W again at level 3 instead of getting E for better clear.

Item Explanations

Sapphire Crystal start?

Sion's biggest problem in a lot of lanes is mana. his consistent trade abilities don't cost much, but he has to spam them constantly to keep up. Some people solve this with a Doran's ring, but i personally don't like it as it doesn't build into anything for Sion. A Sapphire Crystal provides double his early mana pool, opens up an extra pot, and builds into Glacial Shroud, an item I absolutely love on Sion.

Why does the CDR build rush distortion Lucidities and a Glacial Shroud/Kindlegem?

Once you get those items, you'll have flat 20% cdr, movespeed, tank, and mana for 2k. second, since you have the Insight mastery, your Teleport and Flash are already on a 255 second cooldown instead of a 300 second cooldown. Ionian Boots of Lucidity have 10% summoner spell CDR, and Distortion gives Flash, Ghost, and Teleport 15% CDR. this adds up to 40% cdr, taking teleport and flash to a 180 second cooldown, or 3 minutes instead of 5 minutes.

Why do you avoid Sunfire so much?

Because early and mid game, Sion doesn't give a fuck. you can wail on him while hes chopping at your tower and he'll just ignore it. the issue is, that if you have Sunfire, the second someone walks up to you, you take turret aggro. if Sunfire had a better toggle, I would buy it in a heartbeat, otherwise, I just don't like it.

VS

Cho'Gath

Easy

Poke with e, focus on farm, play safe. for positioning, i reccomend standing in such a way that if cho were to auto attack, you would be to the left or right of his E spikes. if cho burns his w to farm, you win. thats his main way of counteracting your q, because his q's hitbox is very funky. cho has massive mana costs and if he's out of mana early game, you can abuse him for that hard.

VS

Darius

Hard

Matchup is hard now because his healing on Q is incredibly strong.

Darius is a lane bully, and so are you. Deciding who wins lane depends on who bullies harder, and if you can counteract his trading pattern. the best way to win a trade is to abuse the other person starting one. darius will like to trade 2 ways, one for pre 6, and one that can easily be used to go full dunk if needed.

PRE 6 DARIUS TRADING PATTERN
Darius will hook you in, auto, auto reset with w, then q when you're running away at the edge. the best way to counteract this is to recognize when he is coming in to do this. you can either play it risky, and try and get a q on the very outer range of the ability to counteract his hook, or let him hook you, and be unable to escape q without burning a summoner or escape because he just used his only interrupt.

POST 6 DARIUS TRADING PATTERN
Darius will hit you with the edge of q, then pull.. he's gonna auto and reset with w, and q again since it will be up. at this point he will have bloodrage, so his damage will be tremendously higher. what you want to do is start using q right after he pulls. he cant interrupt it then, and you can just walk away after that.

tl;dr -- Get heavy e poke off, if you're going to q, make sure hes on the very outer edge of it or on top of him. you do not want to be pulled.

VS

Fiora

Medium

I dont have a super in depth answer for how to do this matchup, but in very simple terms

  • after a certain distance away from fio, her passive will immediately come off. if you dont like the direction its in, back up to where it disappears and then come back.
  • Prioritize armor early against her. health wont help you much due to her passive, but if you can lower her general auto damage thats great.

VS

Garen

Medium

REWORK GAREN MATCHUP PENDING

Garen can win lane against you, VERY easily.

Dont let him know that. dont act tenative around garen, because he will realize that you're afraid and go so ham your beef wont mean anything compared to the sweet, succulent taste of bacon. harass the fuck out of him. you will burn a LOT of mana, so if you take a camp early and have 5 mana pots, spam harass until you are out of mana and pots, then back, rinse, and repeat. if garen realized that he can win trades with you, you are pretty much fucked. there is a way you can win lane against pork garen, but it is difficult to do. First, you have to know his trading pattern. the way a garen will like to trade is by walking up to you, activating q point blank as an auto reset, then running away with the bonus ms. the way you can solve this is simple in concept, but difficult to pull off. when garen starts walking towards you, charge your q. if he backs off, you win the trade. if he turns on his q, cancel yours, throw e, pop shield. i dont care if its not fully charged to knockup. you've won the trade if you can back off in time to avoid the q. his q removes slows, and he cant remove it if its applied after his q. even if q misses knockup, it still slows.

tl;dr -- if garen is playing very passive, abuse him. put on the newest chris brown single and get to work. keep his passive off, and you will regen more health than him in lane anyways.

VS

Gragas

Medium

Gragas doesnt have a trading pattern that you can really interrupt but, you can just anihilate him if you manage to keep getting qs off on him, only use Q and E against him, use shield if you need to get out.

VS

Heimerdinger

Medium

scream those turrets right out of there. the only thing he can really do is block the turrets from getting yelled at. if you dont scream em away he can destroy you, and your jungler cant really safely gank him.

VS

Irelia

Medium
Trading with irelia requires understanding her two powerspikes. the way to win is to know both, and to DELAY them.
Powerspike 1. when her health is lower percentage wise than yours.
you may be asking, why is this a powerspike? whats so great about that?
Lets say irelia is at 75% health. that means if you are above, 75% health, you can get stunned. if you are below, you cannot get stunned, and you get slowed. obviously, a stun is much stronger than a slow, but it's more than that. that means, if you are below 75% health, and she engages on you, you can do more to her. lets say she wants to q in, stun you, walk out. you'll win the trade, because she can't do shit to you to stun you until youre at a higher percentage health. dont poke her down, in fact, let her try to poke you down, and get her cocky enough to enter turret to dive. point blank ult, shield and q, then e so shes stuck under turret longer, and she likely just died.
Powerspike 2. Triforce
Irelia's triforce is pretty much the definitive powerspike. if you wanted to define what a powerspike does, irelia's triforce is a fantastic example. it gives her a massive movement speed bonus on autos, and killed targets (Making it easier to q through minions to get to you), makes her W stronger due to the attack speed increase, and gives her 200 bonus damage after every spellcast. so she can q to a minion, get a massive movement speed increase and q reset because it is dead, then q to you for tons of damage. how do you deal with that? well, heres her trade pattern - q to a minion, q to you, e, auto, ult, auto ult, atuto, and q away. once again, if you're at a lower percent health, there is JACK SHIT she can do to cc you besides a wimpy ass slow. if she qs to a minion near you and it dies from that, start charging q, because she is about to q to you next. hit her mid q, throw an e, and walk away. dont poke her down.
The best you can do against her is to make her have to STOP building triforce. make her think armor or health will work better. once you do, you've won, because she just stopped one of the biggest powerspikes in the game. do everything you can to make her get that tri as late as possible.

Patience is key. dont engage on her, let her engage on you. if she gets one kill on you, the snowball will come very quickly.

VS

Jax

Hard

Jax matches depend on you being very strong early game, and if he gets ahead being very careful.

You can't trade aganst jax, becase his trading pattern can outdo yours entirely, and if he gets phage early you just cannot get him under a q. just poke a shitton with E, and get ganks.

VS

Lee Sin

Medium

He'll win if you don't hide behind minions. your early pressure is stronger than his, just back off around lee's 6-8

[Expansion coming]

VS

Malphite

Medium

E poke is very good idea, get a sprit visage, boy.

[Expansion Coming]

VS

Maokai

Medium
Maokai wins lane by whittling you down with saplings,, then engaging. however, you have 5 hp regen a sec, and his cooldown and mana cost on sapling toss is really bad, ESPECIALLY if he is maxing it.. sustain until he is out of mana, then you can go ham on his ass.

tl;dr -- let him burn mana tossing saplings then engage

VS

Nasus

Medium

After 6 you should never be in lane. Shove to tower, TP gank bot, ult gank bot, tp gank mid, ult gank mid. if you cant do any of those help jungler get herald or dragon. nothing can stop nasus, you can only delay him, and sion can't delay nasus for shit.

VS

Pantheon

Easy

Pantheon will either start with flask and pots, or long sword and pots. his main trading pattern consists of poke with spear throw, then occasionally engaging with shield bash and a few autos. his mana costs are very high, so the best thing you can do is poke with E and wait for him to run out of mana as you outsustain him and his mana. after he is out of mana, you can engage hard and push him out of lane.

VS

Poppy

Medium

Before you start thinking about harassing or trading, draw a straight line between you and poppy. if that line puts you in front of a wall and in front of her, dont trade. otherwise, E poke, and Q when she charges you. if she ults you or you see an ult going to a teammate, ult towards it and block the CC with your ult.

VS

Renekton

Medium

Renek is a lane bully, but you counter that overall, especially since you rush heavy armor. try and counter his engage by charging q when he starts walking towards you to trade (Renek trades with Dash, Auto, Stun, Spin, then Dash out) and if he panics to land the stun and dashes twice, hes burnt his escape. he'll stun, it wont be as long because of fury burnt from using E. If he doesnt, you have your stun, and you can charge shield, stun, throw e, and then hit him with the edge of Shield range to finalize trade.

VS

Riven

Medium
Okay, riven is kinda a pain in the ass for sion. mainly because it is so goddamn hard to lock this bitch down. i mean 100% ad shield, extreme mobility, a knockup, no resources, and a stun?? WTF RITO FIX SHE HAS NO WEAKNESSES.
Yes she does. level one, riven has 3.3 health regen.
not 3.3 a second.
3.3 EVERY 5 SECONDS.
you with those sexy rejuv beads, are regenerating about 4.4 every second level one. Poking riven hurts her EXTREMELY bad. fucking spasm that e kid. make her regret the nerfs. if she cant get enough health gathered to go full ham on you, you can go ham on her and win lane.

tl;dr -- Try to stay safe and farm with your E, get some poke off too. if you manage to poke her down a lot, she cant go in and get scary. she has the lowest hp per 5, so direct hits on her are much more devastating than they are on you.

VS

Rumble

Medium

I've moved rumble down to medium, but be warned that if he gets ahead at all you're going to lose hard.

rumbles entire kit is about going ham. think about it, his shield that gives MS, his ult that keeps people where he wants them, and his main damage source requires him to be facing the person hes fighting. if you can get rumble pushed away and unable to face you, you can win a trade. otherwise it's a lost cause.

VS

Shen

Medium

(I havent played this matchup with new shen yet)

VS

Singed

Easy

he cant lane against you well, and you can hold your own if he proxies.

[Expansion coming (IT WONT FUCKING UPDATE I'VE TRIED 4 TIMES NOW BUT STILL IT IS COMING)]

VS

Teemo

Medium
you're gonna really need to spam spells to win this lane, so the 5 mana pots will be gone fast. dont be afraid to get into range of his autos, you will outdamage him if you can land your q. use E to poke him down and get him much more afraid to go in. an early spirit visage will win you the lane overall.

VS

Trundle

Medium

this is a even lane that depends entirely on jungler and skill at the champion. if you can burn his pillar on your q after 6, you've set yourself up to either ult to escape, or to ult to go in.

VS

Urgot

Medium

Urgot is a very binary champion to play against. his main pattern of play consists of shooting out e, if he hits turning on shield, then spamming q until the e lock has worn off. if you can dodge his e, you can pretty much win lane. if you think hes going to start ulting, you should ult as well. it will cancel the supress, and i belive it will make him go on top of you when its over. his ultimate gives him a shitton of armor and mr though, so he will be tanky for a bit.

tl;dr -- lane is easy if you can dodge his e, if not, welcome to hell

VS

Vladimir

Hard

Sion's power in lane comes from the fact that his kit makes up for his immobility with heavy, versatile cc, and that it can punish simple trading patterns with the amount of flexibility it offers. Vladimir punishes immobility. His trade consists of hitting you with one point and click ability, and another one that increases his healing, then walking away. if you cant catch the kid, you're fucked. play very safe, if you're gonna ult, burn his pool before you do. See advice for running teleport for how to salvage game if you are losing lane.

VS

Wukong

Medium
Wukong is very mana heavy, and often starts flask. his main poke pattern will be to e in, auto, q, then decoy. when he starts walking up to you, start charging q. right when he starts flying in, hit him mid dash, pop shield, and e him. even though i am not a fan of it personally, a sunfire can mess him up pretty damn bad in lane. once again, his mana costs are very high, so if he pokes you hard, hes burning a lot of mana. DO NOT ULT IF YOU DONT KNOW IF HIS CLONE IS UP.

TL;DR -- WU will likely start flask, but you can manage mana better than he can, and he'll drain it faster than you will.

VS

Xin Zhao

Easy

given you can e at the right time and he doesn't somehow have red this matchup is a cakewalk. Xin's main trading pattern will be to Jump in, use his 3 strike knockup, and activate his attack speed boost to get it faster.  E as he is jumping in, then activate shield and back off, he should only get 2 hits on you before you get out of auto range, at which point he will become greedy and keep chasing. right when he gives up and turns around, turn on where he is, he's going to be desperate to try and get that last knockup off, and you can catch him in the stun right before he can hit you, having it wear off. then shield pop to finalize the trade. most xins will either rush a brut or just go straight into bork, so early armor is very good, rush a frozen heart and he cant touch you.

Pros and Cons of Sion Back to Top

Sion may seem like a strong pick often, but there are a lot of situations where you need better picks. Here are some Pros and cons about him to help you better understand when to pick and when not to pick sion.

Pros

  • Extremely tanky
  • High base damage
  • Gank pressure on other lanes is very high
  • Lane bully
  • easy cs animation

Cons

  • Very Low mobility
  • No escapes besides from ult.
  • Q has a VERY long charge up time comparatively end game.
  • High mana costs early

Ult Tips and Tricks Back to Top

So, few quick tips about ulti.

  1. Sion's ultimate takes 2 seconds to ramp up to full speed.
  2. the area of effect is about 300 ish, so if you graze them, stop and the slow will still be applied.
  3. DO NOT ULT ON TOP OF AN ALLY MINON OR NEAR ALLY MINIONS. Currently, there is a glitch where it may change his direction drastically.
  4. ulti damages towers.

BASICS OF DRIFTING 101

First, I recommend watching this DBlackjack21 video, it shows the basics of drifting, and how to do it.

Wall Drifting

There is actually a gosu video which shows how wall drifting works VERY well. watch the video here:
Alright, so what exactly caused that to happen? watch the video again, at watch at about 8 seconds.
drif drif.png

See how he's not coming at it straight on? thats one of the main things. another thing is the cursor location:
drif drif 2.png
Gosu's cursor is to the front and to the left of sion, instead of straight to the side or straight ahead. this is the basics of drifting as sion, and honestly one of the easiest ways to do it. the most important thing is that if you're coming into the wall at a sharper than 45 degree angle, it will not snap. until you hit about a 30 degree angle it will honestly be kinda finicky.

[Still WIP, continued additions later]

General tips about Sion Back to Top

Just a few quick pointers about playing sion.

  • If someone is on top of you and you q, if they run straight away from you, unless they have 475+ movement speed you WILL land the stun.
  • Stun Hitbox actually reaches a bit behind you.
  • the Slow AOE from ulti is actually a bit smaller than shield
I'll add more as I think of em :P

Justifications for why to trust this guide Back to Top

Yes, this guide is written by a silver player. I also almost exclusively play sion, renekton, and nasus, but sion is probably who i have the most games on, with nearly 200 games of sion in ranked alone. In all honestly, I have the mechanical capability with sion and game knowledge with him to climb, but i still have a lot of stuff to learn when it comes to teamfighting, and i'm lacking when it comes to other lanes. In all honesty, if I spent about an hour a day just practicing fundamental skills in a bot game, I could easily make it to mid to upper plat, but I have neither the time nor the dedication right now to do so.

tl;dr sion is the only thing i actually know about with league but i know a LOT about him
