VS

Aatrox
Easy
Just build thornmail and you win. Play safer levels 1-6 and don't let him get an easy kill on you. He does have that lifesteal BS and early it really helps him until you get a thornmail.
VS

Cho'Gath
Easy
Not a hard matchup but I'd recommend getting boots a priority. At the later stages call for ganks to help keep him at minimum stacks because he gets so fat you wont be able to kill him alone.
VS

Darius
Medium
This isnt hard but you can get behind if you aren't careful. Darius damage is for real and you dont have any escapes so play a little safer than typical until you get a lead and some armor. Just stick to your bursty combo and minimize his ability to use his and you will come out on top. Don't let him stack up 5 stacks on you and still have his grab up. Make sure he's wasted his grab before you go in to duel.
VS

Dr. Mundo
Easy
If Mundo plays cleaver toss you wont kill him so just concentrate on CSing and not getting hit in the face with flying cutlery. if he makes the mistake of getting up close and personal show him whats up and shove his face in. Late game hes just a huge nuisance that you wont be able to kill.
VS

Ekko
Easy
If you play correctly and wait for him to dash onto you this is an easy match. wait for him to waste his dash and then follow it up with your entire combo. He wont survive more than a few of these. Build equal armor/MR and continue to push his face in
VS

Fiora
Hard
Fiora can ruin your day. She has high mobility, a slow, and if she lands her E by blocking your Q your in for a rough day. You can still lay some damage on her if she plays incorrectly because shes a much higher skill champ than you are but after level 6 your chances of killing her are drastically reduced unless she plays VERY poorly. Even if she does she can just disengage and leave. Build a sunfire and thornmail and just tank all her damage while CSing as best you can. At the later stages of the game you will take so long to kill that it won't even be worth her time so just get big and beefy and look for map opportunities. Your teamfight is a lot better than hers late game so long as you land your skills so just try to disrupt her diving on your squishies and play peel.
VS

Gnar
Hard
This match will test you. This is one of the few i might recommend going double dorans ring and maxing E. If you can keep his health low he wont be able to be a hop without consequences. If he does hop be sure to take advantage... but watch his red bar for transformation. If Gnar play correctly you won't win this lane, but you can still come out ahead late game by keeping up in CS and picking good engages (when he doesn't have mega gnar). Unlike you, he isn't always in boss tank mode.
VS

Graves
Hard
Top graves can really put a crimp in your style. With his dash and smokescreen he can make landing skills nearly impossible and his Q punishes you for getting up close and personal. Stay even on farm and take advantage of any of his missteps. Double doran E max poke is a good strategy to make him think twice before zoning you. Done correctly you should be able to farm and just tank up to be nearly unkillable.
VS

Hecarim
Medium
Ignite comes in useful here as his lifesteal/regeneration is immense. Try not to fight him while his dread is up and near creeps as he will just outsustain you. He moves fast and has quite a big burst potential as well as he deals AP damage with some of his abilities so dont underestimate it. I recommend letting him come to you while wasting his escape abilities. Sit back, poke, CS, and wait for him to screw up and capitalize.
VS

Illaoi
Medium
Pre level 6 push her face in as hard as possible... post level 6 never engage unless you have a clear advantage and ignite up. If she grabs your soul try and zone her using your Q/W/E. Just run if she ults... don't even mess with that. Being tentacle slapped isn't fun nor is it good for your health.
VS

Irelia
Medium
Irelia plays right into your hands. All of her skills require her to be close to you... which is great since you love bear hugging mofos. Easy matchup if you destroy her early game. If you play passive and let her farm she will shred you and for the love of god watch out for the jungler. If the jungler gets her a few kills this will become nightmarish.
VS

Jax
Easy
Jax is tricky but very squishie to your combo that doesn't rely on auto attacking so trade well and keep him at a distance while zoning him and you should be just fine. Later on when he has 3-4 items you wont be able to kill him but he really shouldn't be able to kill you either so its not that big of a deal. Just team up and cause him as much disruption as possible during teamfights.
VS

Jayce
Easy
Jayce is too weak to put up much of a fight. One combo and hes almost dead so just avoid his nasty poke and wait for him to be out of position and unleash hell on him
VS

Kayle
Easy
Kayle is no threat until late game. Go double doran ring and push her right out of lane. She wont be able to poke you from CS and you will control everything that happens up until team fight phase. Once she hits 4-5 items and does ridiculous damage she might be a problem for your team but she still wont be able to kill you.
VS

Kennen
Easy
Kennen is similar to Kayle, go double dorans and max E and push him right out of lane. If he builds sustain/AD even better for you as he wont be a threat in teamfights. Just continue to make his life miserable and he wont be able to farm AND poke so he will have to make a choice. If he picks poke just ignore his ass and farm up and continue to put damage on him
VS

Malphite
Easy
easiest of easy lanes. basically an AFK lane if you want but i always manage 3-4 kills on him. he doenst have any escapes so if you land your slow you can devastate him. if he plays safe just freeze lane and get a massive CS lead on him and then dive all day long.
VS

Maokai
Medium
An annoying champ but not hard in the early stages if you play right. wait for him to WQ you then begin charging your Q... otherwise you will just be interrupted all day long. At level 6 he has opportunities to kill you so long as he dodges some of your skills since his are easier to land and his ult makes him really beefy. Late game avoid engaging him because he will slowly whittle you down and you wont be able to escape unless you pop your ult.
VS

Nasus
Easy
Easy lane. You can play this however you want. If Nasus just decides to tower hug and play Q farm just put a couple points in E and make his life absolute hell. You can also use your Q and W for zoning purposes near his tower but just be sure to ward well. If this lane gets out of control you will have a true beast on your hands. Late game no matter what you do you wont be able to fight him so just try to CS better than he does and be there for your team by teleporting and ulting down a lane every once in awhile.
VS

Nautilus
Easy
This derpy dude is easy to deal with so long as his jungler doesnt come rescue him. He has no escapes but he is very tanky so dont concentrate on him killing him unless hes really outa position. Tower diving can be really bad and keep good ward coverage for his jungler.
VS

Nidalee
Medium
She does a ton of damage regardless of what she builds and in cat form she can dodge almost anything and escape easily. Play tanky defense and consider putting points in W and E to help you poke her while still farming. She swowballs pretty easily and you dont have a high chance of killing her so just farm and get big and dont get hit by spears.
VS

Olaf
Medium
This guy can actually out poke you and in a straight up duel he regens so much even with ignite on him that you wont be able to trade up close and personal. keep chipping away at him until hes low health and then he wont be able to hard engage if you have ignite up. Just play safely and dont underestimate his damage when hes at low health.
VS

Pantheon
Medium
He's squishie so a couple combos on him and hes dangerously low on health. Force him to use all his spells and not just his spears and he will run out of mana quickly. bait his stun then begin charging up your Q and land your combo. Build some regen and armor and you should begin to win this lane around level 6-7.
VS

Poppy
Hard
This evil brat can do everything you do only better and she has pretty good mobility so landing your skills is hard. Be really careful of walking near walls and her shield is overpowered strong. the only thing you have on her is your ultimate but hers negates anything you might try to do so just play safe, poke at range, and build tanky. You wont win this lane at any stage of the game so just keep an eye on your lanes to try and make plays elsewhere by teleporting or ulting down a lane.
VS

Quinn
Hard
I havent tried maxing E on Quinn but typical play style gets beaten pretty badly. She's very mobile and has disrupts to stop your Q. She does an absurd amount of damage and snowballs hard so be really careful of your engages. One of the few matchups that you should probably play very passive and build doran shield.
VS

Renekton
Hard
Very hard matchup. He doesnt have massive kill potential post level 6 but you wont be able to kill him either and he controls the minion wave regardless of what you do. He has so much regeneration that poking him is pointless and hard engaging is nearly impossible to win trades. His slice and dice makes him mobile enough that landing your Q is a lesson in futility and his ult will make sure he escapes and/or trades and regens enough that you wont kill him regardless of how out of position he is. You wont win this so just farm and look for opportunities around the map
VS

Riven
Medium
Some Sion's find riven a hard matchup but i've always curb stomped her. She can be tricky if she gets help from her jungler and her mobility makes landing skills hard but just wait for her to engage and waste her kit and follow up with your combo. She has ZERO health regeneration so if you beat her face in a couple times early and zone her she wont be the massive killing machine late game that shes capable of. Late game keep her in ward coverage and don't let her flash combo your squishies and you should be fine. Help peel if you can and dont duel her past the 2 item mark... it wont end well for you.
VS

Rumble
Easy
Hes an annoying poke champ with a kit similar to yours but he doesn't deal as much outright burst as you do. throw a couple points in E and keep tagging him with that while hiding behind minions and you should do just fine. His flamespitter clears the creep wave really easy so don't even try to stand in the wave in the beginning... you'll just take damage for nothing. Mid game his ult really hurts and you don't have a good way to disengage other than your ult so be careful. by then you should have itemized pretty well anyway and have a good size CS lead hopefully if you played your cards right so the damage shouldn't be overwhelming.
VS

Ryze
Easy
Ryze doesn't hurt you early game but his burst combo can be pretty devastating if you don't build MR. One of the few top lane AP champs id recommend rushing your MR item before your armor item. When he rune prisons you just start charging your Q and hes basically got two choices: continue trying to hurt you and get hurt massively or just discontinue and go back to farming. If he plays really aggressive pre 6 and doesn't respect your damage push his face in. I can usually manage a few kills before mid/late game when he gets massive damage potential and you should stop screwing with him.
VS

Shen
Medium
Shen actually has a decent shot at making your life miserable. He builds similar to you and gets a decent sized shield and dashes so hitting him with your spells can be hard. He also has a great shot at making better map plays than you so his team impact potentially large. I dont have any surefire ways of beating him other than landing your combo's and keeping him at low health so that when he does decide to ult he can be killed easily. Keep him in sight range as stopping his ult is possible... just hard. Mid game he actually can whittle you down in an extended engagement so keep engages short and bursty.
VS

Singed
Easy
Singed is a no brainer easy lane. Since you dont have to be in kissing distance to do damage you can sit back and spell him all day long. EZ PZ lemon squeezie
VS

Swain
Easy
taking ignite vs this punk is required. you should be able to demolish and demoralize this guy pre 6 and deny CS. Don't let jungle interfere and youll win this easily.
VS

Teemo
Easy
teemo is redic easy to beat since you dont auto alot and you can spam E on him. Just build double dorans and throw down damage. He will struggle to even CS under the pressure. several kills are easily accomplished.
VS

Trundle
Easy
Trundle can actually be a giant pain. Pre 6 hes not much of a killer but once he hits 6 you wont be able to duel him very well with all his regen and his ult. Concentrate on gaining an early lead with your bursty skills and then turning that into a zoning/CS lead. His pillar can stop your ult so beware of that and make sure you don't get caught out. Typically you can just run away from him even though you'll take punishment he shouldn't be able to outright kill you unless you're stupid.
VS

Tryndamere
Medium
build thornmail and profit. His early game is stronger than yours and he has some mobility so wait for him to waste his spin then go in hard and burst his face. Thornmail is a necessity, don't even try going for anything else besides a little health first. try to deny him as much CS as possible... don't roam on this guy as he can catch back up easily. Make sure his jungle doesn't work you over as you push him hard under tower. Late game just don't get caught by him as he will shred you hard and unless you pop ult you wont escape.
VS

Vladimir
Medium
Early game Vlad is nothing to be worried about. If played correctly you can bait his troll pool then unleash hell on him. He can't regenerate fast enough without his first few items so you have a good kill potential. After level 6-8 you probably wont kill him without help but you can still be a giant nuisance to his farming. Just keep his CS in check and then look for opportunities elsewhere.
VS

Volibear
Medium
Volibear can actually kick your butt if you let him get his way. He needs to be up close and personal for his autos though so take advantage of your mid range spells and punish him hard if he considers getting up close and personal. I recommend keeping him at a distance and playing safe until you pop his passive. Once that's out of the way then feel free to hard engage so long as you see an advantage. Ignite keeps him honest and scared so don't be afraid to throw down ignite if the trade looks close. If nothing else pop that passive while ignites on so he has to play a little safer than normal.
VS

Wukong
Medium
Jukong is pretty sneaky but if you just wait for him to engage on you with nimbus strike and then begin charging your Q you should be able to land a whole combo and destroy the sneaky slut. If he clones and you miss not a big deal as he will run out of mana quick if he has to clone every time he engages. Be careful in the early stages before you have armor though because he can put out a lot of damage and his kill potential is probably better than yours. I'd recommend running cloth armor to start on this one just to mitigate some of that early damage.
VS

Yasuo
Hard
Yasuo is a giant douche. He has high mobility, high damage, CC, and once he hits six he has innate armor penetration with his ult. He's an absolute nightmare to try and land your skills on if he has a creep wave to dash around to and you can't see which minions hes used the dash on and which he hasn't so predicting his movement is hard. I've never beaten a good yasuo in top lane while he has a minion wave to bounce around on. The only suggestion I have is to keep away from your own creep wave and if possible sit in HIS creep wave. That way he has to walk up to you in order to do anything... but that's also extremely risky. It puts you in dangerous ganking position and you would have to walk through yasuo to get away. I don't recommend this unless you are very confident and or have a lead. Otherwise play SUPER safe and just let him push into your tower. Concentrate on CS and just don't die as your passive wont catch him. Call for ganks. This is one of the few matchups that you just dont win.
About Me Back to Top
I am a gold player who's played for 3 seasons now. I know I'm not a pro and I don't try to play like it. I believe you must play this game within your skill/ability and its very reliant on your team's skill/ability so trying to use some of the pros builds/strategies just doesn't work at this ELO. Being a better player is more about understand that and playing around your ELO than utilizing a challengers guide. You aren't a challenger so why would their build work for you?
